Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Suspense, and the producer of radio is outstanding, theater of thrills,
- 0:11Speaker 1: the master of mystery and adventure William M. Robeson.
- 0:15Speaker 2: There's no business like show business, so it's no wonder
- 0:19Speaker 2: show business is full of superstitions. Never whistle in the
- 0:22Speaker 2: dressing room, never give the curtain line of a play
- 0:25Speaker 2: until dress rehearsal, don't send your laundry out of Monday night.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Business is bad, And of course, the sentimental daddy of
- 0:32Speaker 2: them all, the show must go on. History has yet
- 0:36Speaker 2: to record a trooper trepidacious enough to ask why. But
- 0:41Speaker 2: our story concerns itself with a show that did not
- 0:44Speaker 2: go on, and the theatrical superstition which states, never follow
- 0:48Speaker 2: a banjo act with a banjo act.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Listen.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Listen. Then, as one of the greatest show people of
- 0:53Speaker 2: them all, Miss Margaret Whiting, stars in never follow a
- 0:58Speaker 2: banjo act, which begins an exact.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Memo on medals. Interesting information about our military awards and decorations.
- 1:07Speaker 4: In the past, a person receiving a medal for valor
- 1:09Speaker 4: was also awarded additional pay. Not so today. Winners of
- 1:13Speaker 4: the Medal of Honor, however, are entitled to receive a
- 1:17Speaker 4: special pension of one hundred dollars a month when they
- 1:19Speaker 4: reach the age of fifty, and all enlisted personnel who
- 1:23Speaker 4: have won the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross,
- 1:27Speaker 4: or the Navy Cross are authorized by law to have
- 1:30Speaker 4: their retirement pay increase ten percent. Although the custom of
- 1:35Speaker 4: awarding medals is as old as recorded time, the United
- 1:39Speaker 4: States has issued comparatively few, and these rather late in
- 1:42Speaker 4: our history. Our present system dates back to the Civil War,
- 1:46Speaker 4: almost one hundred years after we had emerged as a nation.
- 1:51Speaker 4: The Bronze Star, one of our newest medals, was authorized
- 1:54Speaker 4: in nineteen forty four for anyone in the United States
- 1:58Speaker 4: Armed Services who distinguish his own himself by heroic or
- 2:01Speaker 4: meritorious achievement not involving an aerial flight in military operations
- 2:06Speaker 4: against an armed enemy. America's citizen soldiers have brought glory
- 2:11Speaker 4: to themselves and their country down through the years, defending
- 2:15Speaker 4: our free way of life.
- 2:18Speaker 5: And now.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Never follow a banjo act starring Miss Margaret Whiting, A
- 2:28Speaker 1: tale well calculated to keep you in suspense.

- 4:26Speaker 9: they go. But this Terry Dane is a million dollar
- 4:28Speaker 9: a year gross with tousled hair. It's a face you

- 4:33Speaker 9: and a voice the answer to a maiden spread.
- 4:37Speaker 10: Uh.
- 4:37Speaker 6: Personally, I go for men.

- 4:55Speaker 6: I read it in Varietay. Big deal.
- 4:57Speaker 9: Now we need somebody to work with them, Rosie. Somebody
- 5:01Speaker 9: who's got the experience, the talent and a voice you
- 5:05Speaker 9: could lay bricks on.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Somebody who can really go along with him. It is
- 5:10Speaker 3: a rid May my.
- 5:11Speaker 9: Mother be struck dead? I should say one word that
- 5:13Speaker 9: isn't the truth? Sincere and from the heart gone. All right,

- 5:56Speaker 3: What Constance Green? The boy got over it?

- 6:46Speaker 3: Dear about Terry. Keep away from him, Okay, I mean away, dear.
- 6:53Speaker 3: He's uh, he's a moody kid. He's terribly shy.
- 6:57Speaker 6: Remember what I said before about liking men.
- 7:02Speaker 3: That's what I call being mature. And he's just a boy.
- 7:06Speaker 9: You've got no interest, you'll develop none. Right, you'll keep clear,
- 7:09Speaker 9: clean and away right right.
- 7:11Speaker 6: Oh, I'll make it look good on stage, ray, but

- 7:52Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, they love me.
- 7:54Speaker 11: It's true, every last one of them out there. It's
- 7:59Speaker 11: just a thing that happens to women when I sing Holy.
- 8:04Speaker 11: Somehow it just doesn't seem to happen to you, Rosie.

- 9:20Speaker 12: There are much better investments.
- 9:22Speaker 3: It was only fifty cents.
- 9:23Speaker 12: For sixty three cents a day. You can buy a

- 13:08Speaker 5: Yes?
- 13:09Speaker 6: And it uh, it makes a lump in my throat,

- 13:30Speaker 6: Huh? But you remember that knife. It's making me nervous.
- 13:34Speaker 8: You don't like me, or you do it?
- 13:35Speaker 10: You said?

- 14:15Speaker 6: Now, all right, honey, if you insist.
- 14:19Speaker 8: When I saw you lying there and all that blood,
- 14:24Speaker 8: I knew you finally loved me, and it was right.

- 14:30Speaker 8: Yes, I'll see you tonight, Darling. I know it's mean
- 14:37Speaker 8: making you wait.
- 14:39Speaker 6: That's all right, Terry. I'll wait.

- 14:53Speaker 10: We have together ample capacity and freedom to defend freedom.
- 15:00Speaker 10: This is NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Ever heard
- 15:05Speaker 10: of the Central Europe Operating Agency. It's an important part
- 15:08Speaker 10: of NATO. Headquartered near Versailles, France. The Central Europe Operating
- 15:12Speaker 10: Agency is responsible for the operation of pipelines to ensure
- 15:16Speaker 10: a supply of fuel for NATO's land and air forces
- 15:19Speaker 10: in that area. The United States of America is a

- 16:08Speaker 8: We'll sit ray.
- 16:09Speaker 6: That boy is a nut. He was in my bungalow
- 16:11Speaker 6: just now with a knife this long, suggesting that I
- 16:14Speaker 6: should maybe flip every time he opens his mouth.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Gotta be kidding, kidding, he down here cut my throat.
- 16:20Speaker 6: Oh, because he thinks I don't like him enough.
- 16:22Speaker 3: You don't like him?
- 16:23Speaker 6: Yeah, and you know what you said about the old
- 16:25Speaker 6: show business motto never follow a banjo act with a banjo. Well, listen,
- 16:30Speaker 6: Ray Cram, you've done it. He's got me all mixed
- 16:32Speaker 6: up in his mixed up mind with that kid singer
- 16:35Speaker 6: and something about lying in a pool of blood, and well,
- 16:38Speaker 6: of that boy, I'm another banjo act.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Right, all right, all right, Rosie, what do you think
- 16:42Speaker 3: we should do?
- 16:43Speaker 6: Call the police?
- 16:43Speaker 3: We can't very well do that, though, can we?
- 16:46Speaker 5: Well? Why not?
- 16:47Speaker 6: The kid's sick, he's insane, he could do anything.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Aren't you exaggerating just a little?
- 16:52Speaker 4: I think?
- 16:53Speaker 3: Don't you think it might have been just a little joke?
- 16:55Speaker 12: Huh?
- 16:56Speaker 6: Ray nobody makes jokes like that?
- 16:58Speaker 3: Oh they do? Now, why don't we forget about this?
- 17:01Speaker 8: Huh Rosie?
- 17:02Speaker 6: Forget about it?
- 17:03Speaker 3: Yeah, forget about it. You know, I know what that
- 17:08Speaker 3: the kid is maybe a little bit loopy.
- 17:10Speaker 6: You know, you know about him and that little knife
- 17:13Speaker 6: of him.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Or raise your voice?
- 17:14Speaker 6: And maybe you know how that other girl singer die.
- 17:17Speaker 3: He fell through a shower door.
- 17:18Speaker 6: I read about it. She was cut up pretty bad.
- 17:20Speaker 5: Wasn't she.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Listensie, listen to me, good. You've been around a long
- 17:25Speaker 3: time there.
- 17:27Speaker 9: You know what can happen sometimes to a Weisenheimer goes
- 17:29Speaker 9: popping off.
- 17:30Speaker 3: What it's not called for, but.
- 17:31Speaker 6: This is called for. That that kid belongs in an
- 17:34Speaker 6: asylum or something.
- 17:35Speaker 9: Kid represents a million dollar gross, of which you get
- 17:39Speaker 9: ten percent, of which I get a whole lot less
- 17:41Speaker 9: than that. He's divided up half a dozen ways, Rosie.
- 17:43Speaker 9: Some of the holders are very influential parties. One of
- 17:47Speaker 9: the parties in particular, wouldn't like it if anything happened
- 17:51Speaker 9: to make the money stop coming in. Now, this party's
- 17:54Speaker 9: name is a secret, but you'm gonna tell it to
- 17:57Speaker 9: because you've been around, Rosie, you can appreciate this.
- 18:02Speaker 6: Who's the party? The syndicate, So explain they're human beings,
- 18:08Speaker 6: sort of tell them the truth. Tell them they bought
- 18:11Speaker 6: in on something bad, just like you.
- 18:13Speaker 9: No, no, you don't understand I sold them Terry Dane, me,
- 18:18Speaker 9: Ray Cram.
- 18:19Speaker 6: You're in trouble.
- 18:20Speaker 3: But unless you talk. If you do, you're in trouble too.
- 18:24Speaker 9: How do you mean I'm in trouble to the syndicate,
- 18:28Speaker 9: I'd be forced to tell them who blew the whistle
- 18:31Speaker 9: on their golden goose? And then hm, you know, oh,
- 18:39Speaker 9: so take the realistic view a baby, We'll protect you
- 18:43Speaker 9: we'll keep Terry away from you.
- 18:46Speaker 6: You've got nothing to worry about, nothing to worry about.
- 18:50Speaker 6: That's nice to know. I look, Ray, couldn't I just
- 18:54Speaker 6: slip out of town?
- 18:57Speaker 3: I saw the boys after the show.
- 18:58Speaker 5: They liked you.
- 18:59Speaker 3: You, that's the word from the boys.
- 19:02Speaker 6: I wish I were dead.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Do like I say, you won't be. And there's one
- 19:07Speaker 3: more thing there, Yes, dear. Now you're singing good on
- 19:11Speaker 3: your solo. Don't sing too good on your duet. Don't
- 19:16Speaker 3: take it away.
- 19:16Speaker 9: From the boy.
