- 0:03Speaker 1: It's the Happy Families podcast. It's the podcast for the.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Time poor parent who just wants answers.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Now. Hello, it's doctor Justin Coulson with Kylie, my wife
- 0:13Speaker 1: and mom to our six daughters. I'm the co host
- 0:15Speaker 1: an parenting expert on Channel Lane's Parental Guidance. Season two
- 0:18Speaker 1: is coming soon and today we are going to do
- 0:22Speaker 1: a lightning round called Beach Days. Why well, we've lived
- 0:26Speaker 1: near the beach. We love the beach. We can't get
- 0:28Speaker 1: enough of the beach. We've got a lot of experience
- 0:29Speaker 1: taking our kids to the beach. It's the middle of
- 0:31Speaker 1: summer here in Australia and summer holidays means everyone's got
- 0:35Speaker 1: to go to the beach at least once. But we
- 0:37Speaker 1: want you to do it safely, we want you to
- 0:38Speaker 1: do it well, we want you to have a great
- 0:39Speaker 1: time doing it. Just recently we had the wonderful doctor
- 0:42Speaker 1: Anthy Rhoades from the Royal Children's Health Poll talking about
- 0:46Speaker 1: water safety and the devastation that occurs when children slip
- 0:51Speaker 1: into the water silently and disappear from adult view. We
- 0:56Speaker 1: want to make sure that people are safe. So Kylie,
- 0:57Speaker 1: here's how it's going to go. We've got about four
- 1:00Speaker 1: and a half minutes to run through as many tips
- 1:03Speaker 1: for parents when they're taking the kids to the beach
- 1:05Speaker 1: as possible to make it as wonderfully, fabulously super as possible,
- 1:09Speaker 1: but also as safe as possible. I've got a huge
- 1:13Speaker 1: list of things because I love taking the kids to
- 1:15Speaker 1: the beach. I think that I'm the pro and the
- 1:17Speaker 1: family with this, but I reckon you're gonna have a
- 1:19Speaker 1: few things to add. You're looking at me like you
- 1:20Speaker 1: don't believe me.
- 1:22Speaker 2: I can't wait to hear your list.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Okay, Number one, leave early, so you can leave early.
- 1:26Speaker 1: What I mean by that is if you don't live
- 1:28Speaker 1: near the beach, which has been our experience for a
- 1:31Speaker 1: long long time. When you go to the beach and
- 1:34Speaker 1: you leave at like nine o'clock in the morning, like
- 1:36Speaker 1: everybody else, you sit in traffic forever as you're trying
- 1:39Speaker 1: to get to the coast, and then you get there
- 1:40Speaker 1: and there's nowhere to park, and then you get out
- 1:42Speaker 1: of the beach and it's hot, and the sands sticky
- 1:45Speaker 1: and horrible, and it's absolutely packed, and it's just not
- 1:47Speaker 1: a very pleasant day, which is why people don't like
- 1:49Speaker 1: going to the beach. Plus the wind is up. The
- 1:51Speaker 1: wind is horrible at the beach. My number one tip
- 1:54Speaker 1: is leave early, like, get to the beach around I
- 1:57Speaker 1: don't know as early as you possibly can. I'm gonna
- 1:59Speaker 1: say seven. But some people might think that that's just rude.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Well, in Queensland, I don't think it is at all.
- 2:05Speaker 1: No, no, no, But the whole idea is get there early.
- 2:08Speaker 1: When you get there early, you get a park, but
- 2:10Speaker 1: you also miss the heat of the sun.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Yeah, but you also pretty much have the beach to
- 2:14Speaker 2: yourself pretty much. So when you're dealing with young children,
- 2:17Speaker 2: it's so much easier to superfice them when you're not
- 2:19Speaker 2: having to share the beach with a bajillion other.
- 2:20Speaker 1: People one hundred percent. And then you can also leave early,
- 2:23Speaker 1: which means you can jump back in the car at
- 2:25Speaker 1: about nine o'clock or ten o'clock or eleven o'clock, whatever
- 2:28Speaker 1: it is. When everyone else is arriving after they've just
- 2:30Speaker 1: sat in traffic for two hours to get there, and
- 2:31Speaker 1: you're like, we've had a full day. The kids are
- 2:34Speaker 1: absolutely zonked, whether they're two or twelve or even in
- 2:37Speaker 1: their late teens, they're like that was great, and you
- 2:41Speaker 1: can kind of Breathe easy, you've already had a great day,
- 2:44Speaker 1: get home in time for lunch. You're not spending a
- 2:46Speaker 1: fortune on food at the beach. It just works early.
- 2:48Speaker 1: So my number one tip leave early so you can
- 2:50Speaker 1: leave early, not that you want to leave, but if
- 2:53Speaker 1: you're going to go, get there early so you can
- 2:54Speaker 1: enjoy it at as best and then you can come
- 2:56Speaker 1: home early before it's not as nice. That's that's really
- 2:58Speaker 1: what it is. Number two, kids were young.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Yeah, my number one love for the beach with swimming caps.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Bright colored swimming caps for the kids. I could see
- 3:09Speaker 2: them from a mile away and I knew exactly where
- 3:11Speaker 2: they were at all times.
- 3:13Speaker 1: The same with the bright rashies. Right, so brilliant idea.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Well, dogs don't They actually don't stand out as much
- 3:20Speaker 2: as you think they will.
- 3:21Speaker 1: But the rashes, like if you get a really glaringly
- 3:25Speaker 1: lairy one, they can. But the swimming cap.
- 3:27Speaker 2: And it only really works obviously for young children, because
- 3:30Speaker 2: as soon as kids work out that no one else
- 3:31Speaker 2: is wearing them, it's harder to convince them to wear them.
- 3:34Speaker 1: But they may That's when you need to supervise them
- 3:35Speaker 1: the most difference. Okay, my next tip, cool cabanas. You
- 3:39Speaker 1: can't take mine, not sponsored, but seriously, instead of those
- 3:42Speaker 1: beach umbrellas that blow away, and instead of the cabanas
- 3:45Speaker 1: that are really all the.
- 3:46Speaker 2: This is literally the best beach investment we've made.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Yep. The smaller ones are like one hundred and fift
- 3:52Speaker 1: two hundred bucks. The big ones a obvious a little
- 3:53Speaker 1: bit dearer, but these things are that's They're the world's
- 3:56Speaker 1: easiest things to put up. They give you fabulous shade.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I love them, and I reckon that if you're going
- 4:02Speaker 1: to go to the beach, you want one, and I.
- 4:05Speaker 2: It's literally a two minutes setup. It is so fast
- 4:07Speaker 2: to set up. The kids could set it up on
- 4:09Speaker 2: their own pretty much. It's so easy to do. And
- 4:12Speaker 2: the coverage is what I actually love the most. There
- 4:15Speaker 2: is always a full square no matter where you are.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Depending on the sun.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Well, no, you might not be sitting under it, you
- 4:21Speaker 2: might be away from it, but you've always got that
- 4:24Speaker 2: solid square of shade.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Which brings me my next one, which is rash shirts. Sunscreen,
- 4:32Speaker 1: like the Australian sun is horrendously bad. A couple of
- 4:36Speaker 1: times this summer I've been burnt because I've only been
- 4:38Speaker 1: outside for fifteen twenty maybe thirty minutes, and haven't covered
- 4:41Speaker 1: up properly.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Well, you can tell that we're actually out of practice
- 4:44Speaker 2: because we haven't lived near the beach for so long.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Because you don't usually get burnt, but you've come home
- 4:49Speaker 2: a number of times and I'm.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Like, what is going on? Yeah, my bottom lip fell
- 4:51Speaker 1: off because it got sunburned. I didn't get kissed for
- 4:54Speaker 1: a week and a half. It was horrible. My next one, flags,
- 4:57Speaker 1: excuse me, hello, flags and supervision. Flags and supervision, like,
- 5:02Speaker 1: just don't turn your back on your kids, don't leave
- 5:05Speaker 1: it to the lifeguards. Please watch your kids and make
- 5:08Speaker 1: sure they're swimming inside in between those flags. Absolutely critical
- 5:11Speaker 1: from a safety point of view. Just has to be done. Okay, sorry,
- 5:17Speaker 1: I went, but it's your turn.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Now you're going to let me talk.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Still got a few more? Can I do my next one? No, Okay,
- 5:24Speaker 1: when you're ready.
- 5:24Speaker 2: We've got one dry towels, a good one, not necessarily
- 5:29Speaker 2: any brand in particular, but just when I have six
- 5:33Speaker 2: children that I'm dragging along to the beach and they
- 5:35Speaker 2: all have their big fluffy towels, that's a huge amount
- 5:38Speaker 2: of stuff I've got to carry.
- 5:39Speaker 1: When we were stuck in Queensland because of COVID restrictions.
- 5:42Speaker 1: A couple of years ago, we booked a holiday when
- 5:44Speaker 1: we could finally travel again and went to the Wit
- 5:46Speaker 1: Sundays for four or five days, and we forgot our towels.
- 5:51Speaker 1: The only place we could find towers was in one
- 5:53Speaker 1: of those chemists at Early Beach and they had those
- 5:55Speaker 1: quick dry towels. Since then, you've kept them in the
- 5:58Speaker 1: car that they get used all the time. There's such
- 6:00Speaker 1: a brilliant purchase.
- 6:01Speaker 2: They take up less space. So the seven tails I
- 6:03Speaker 2: have take up less space than one fluffy towel H
- 6:06Speaker 2: takes up. And like you said, I just keep them
- 6:09Speaker 2: in the car and they're perfect, brilliant.
- 6:11Speaker 1: I'm going to keep you warm, Okay, I'm going to
- 6:13Speaker 1: go with I'm going to go with my next one.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Take water and maybe even a few treats, especially if
- 6:18Speaker 1: you've got to travel. Costs a fortune when you have
- 6:20Speaker 1: to stop and no one wants to stop it. You
- 6:22Speaker 1: don't have to stop at a supermarket on the way
- 6:24Speaker 1: of the beach. Make sure you've got some stuff in
- 6:25Speaker 1: the car, some fruits, some water, some nuts, maybe even
- 6:28Speaker 1: a less healthy snack as well, depending on how your
- 6:31Speaker 1: family rolls, and it just makes the trip more enjoyable.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Choose a great playlist that everyone can agree on, and
- 6:37Speaker 1: just get to the beach with that water because you
- 6:39Speaker 1: will want it once you're there.
- 6:40Speaker 2: And my last one is go with friends.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Oh I had that?
- 6:42Speaker 2: Always fun more fun if you've got someone to go with.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Take a frisbee, take a cricket ball.
- 6:49Speaker 1: And bad if you want, or yeah, excess orriz.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's always more fun and it requires less brain
- 6:56Speaker 2: power from you as a parent if there's other people there.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Volleyball and a soccer ball for the same purpose down
- 7:02Speaker 1: at the beach. The kids love to kick and throw
- 7:03Speaker 1: and hit those balls around and it's just great. I've
- 7:05Speaker 1: got three more really quickly. We're out of time, so
- 7:07Speaker 1: I'm going to do it very fast.
- 7:08Speaker 2: You look at me like I told your five minute
- 7:10Speaker 2: podcast is.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Now we're at about seven and a half minutes. But
- 7:13Speaker 1: don't give me a hard time about it. It's worth it.
- 7:14Speaker 1: What are you last? Three boogie boards or surfboards, just
- 7:18Speaker 1: even with the little kids. Take them. But as a
- 7:21Speaker 1: follow up to that, part B of that is, don't
- 7:23Speaker 1: push your kids into situations where they're going to be
- 7:25Speaker 1: scared in the waves. You can push boundaries later when
- 7:28Speaker 1: they're older and they understand how the ocean works a
- 7:30Speaker 1: bit more. But having those boards, having the float, he's
- 7:33Speaker 1: having something to catch waves on is such a thrill
- 7:36Speaker 1: for kids. It's so much fun. And my last one
- 7:40Speaker 1: is if you can pay for surfing lessons, go to
- 7:43Speaker 1: a beach where there's a little surf school. Pay the
- 7:46Speaker 1: small amount of money, little cost for those surfing lessons.
- 7:49Speaker 1: The kids will become more familiar with the ocean. They'll
- 7:52Speaker 1: get a real thrill out of writing those great big surfboards.
- 7:54Speaker 1: You'll have somebody experienced to guide you. And I just
- 7:57Speaker 1: think there are I think they're a great way for
- 8:00Speaker 1: kids to enjoy the beach and take the pressure off
- 8:03Speaker 1: you a little bit as.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Well, and learn to read the ocean.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Yeah maybe not on surf lesson number one, but over time, Yeah,
- 8:09Speaker 1: a lot of fun. We hope that those beach tips
- 8:11Speaker 1: are fun for your beach days as we make our
- 8:14Speaker 1: way through summer. Thanks so much for listening to the
- 8:16Speaker 1: Happy Families podcast. Back tomorrow with some road trip tips
- 8:19Speaker 1: on the Happy Families Podcast Summer series
