- 0:25Well, hello, everyone, and welcome to Inspirations of
- 0:29Your Life.
- 0:29It's so great to be with you here
- 0:31on, yeah, on Tuesday, May 26.
- 0:37Again, it is so very great to be
- 0:39here with you.
- 0:40And this is a milestone for me tonight.
- 0:44Tonight was the very first time that I
- 0:48got to share my story about my book,
- 0:50which you guys know about, Drained to Driven.
- 0:53It was my first author talk and signing.
- 0:56So I am very, very grateful to all
- 0:59the people that showed up.
- 1:00And yeah, it is so great to have
- 1:04told my story the first time, and it's
- 1:06going to be the first that I told
- 1:07it.
- 1:08And I'm going to tell it many other
- 1:09times.
- 1:09But it was really great giving the talk
- 1:12and having the first author signing and getting
- 1:15to talk with different people that were hearing
- 1:18my story was an amazing thing.
- 1:20Ladies and gentlemen, if this is the very
- 1:22first time you're joining me, I want to
- 1:24say thank you, and I want to say
- 1:25welcome.
- 1:26If you've been here one time, five times,
- 1:2810 times, 100 times or more, I want
- 1:30to say thank you, but I also want
- 1:32to say the words welcome back, because I
- 1:34really do appreciate people that enjoy the content
- 1:38that I produce here on the Inspirations of
- 1:41Your Life show.
- 1:42If you, ladies and gentlemen, have been here
- 1:44before or not, don't forget to check out
- 1:46BelieveMeAchieved.com, of course, for more of my
- 1:48amazing, inspiring creations, short-form content, long-form
- 1:52content, reels, and so much more.
- 1:56So yeah, I hope that you guys will
- 1:59definitely choose to make this a part of
- 2:05your life every day, because I think, ladies
- 2:07and gentlemen, we know when we do this,
- 2:09life changes.
- 2:11And tonight, when I had this opportunity to
- 2:14share this with people, it was really an
- 2:19experience, guys.
- 2:20I mean a real experience.
- 2:21To be able to get up there and
- 2:24to share it was just such a privilege,
- 2:28a real, real privilege.
- 2:31And I have to tell you that you
- 2:35can think about becoming an author, you can
- 2:37talk about doing author work, but until you've
- 2:41actually done it, until you've actually gone on
- 2:44stage and actually told your story, and I've
- 2:47been on stage many times before, to be
- 2:49honest, but this is the first time I've
- 2:50gotten on stage with something personal like this.
- 2:53This was personal.
- 2:55And I think that's an important thing to
- 2:59realize, that it was personal.
- 3:02And I got to tell my story, and
- 3:04I got to tell you, the time flew,
- 3:06but it was so amazing to be able
- 3:08to connect with the audience and to just
- 3:10be genuine with them.
- 3:11I mean, it was a real special time.
- 3:14And I think a lot of people really
- 3:16appreciated it, a lot of people did buy
- 3:18my book.
- 3:19So again, I'm very grateful for that.
- 3:21And I have to tell you that it
- 3:23was amazing, absolutely, absolutely amazing.
- 3:28And so, yeah, oh, if you guys are
- 3:33thirsty, if you're hungry, feel free to go
- 3:35get yourself something.
- 3:35I have delicious RO water here, and I
- 3:37also have a cup of hot decaf tea.
- 3:42Really good.
- 3:43All right, guys.
- 3:44So without any further ado, let's kick this
- 3:46show off.
- 3:47Are you ready?
- 3:47I know I am.
- 3:48All right.
- 3:50So yeah, we are in our series five,
- 3:55can you believe that?
- 3:56Series five, understanding about risk, understanding what risk
- 3:59is.
- 4:00And this is show 22, and this is
- 4:02episode number four.
- 4:04Yeah.
- 4:06All right, guys.
- 4:07So there's a moment in every life where
- 4:12comfort stops feeling safe and it starts feeling
- 4:15heavy, almost like you can't handle it, where
- 4:19you realize the thing you're afraid of isn't
- 4:22failure, it's staying the same.
- 4:25Hey, guys, I'm John C.
- 4:26Morley.
- 4:27I'm a serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video
- 4:30producer, podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student,
- 4:34and a passionate lifelong learner.
- 4:37And now I'm so grateful to be a
- 4:38published author who has just given his first
- 4:41author talk and science talk, okay?
- 4:45You can't have deep relationships, real trust, or
- 4:47meaningful change without stepping into uncertainty.
- 4:52And that's exactly what I'm breaking down here
- 4:54today.
- 4:57Number one, connection requires risk.
- 5:03Surprise, surprise, surprise, surprise.
- 5:07Yes, it requires risk.
- 5:13And because it requires risk, some people might
- 5:15say, you know what?
- 5:16I don't want to bother.
- 5:17I don't want to get involved.
- 5:21That's the wrong attitude, guys, the wrong attitude.
- 5:28I think it's important to know what we're
- 5:31talking about.
- 5:32I think it's important to understand that you're
- 5:34going to be uncomfortable sometimes.
- 5:37That's going to happen.
- 5:40So we have to practice getting comfortable being
- 5:42uncomfortable.
- 5:44Yeah, we have to practice getting comfortable being
- 5:47uncomfortable.
- 5:49And I'll tell you, guys, this is a
- 5:54pretty amazing thing.
- 5:56Because when you do this, you start to
- 5:59understand where life is going, all right?
- 6:03Number two, honest people take social risk.
- 6:08They do.
- 6:10If you live your whole life and you
- 6:12have never taken a risk, well, you haven't
- 6:13lived.
- 6:15I'm not saying to be foolish, but I'm
- 6:16saying you have to take some calculated risks.
- 6:19That's the bottom line, all right?
- 6:21That is the bottom line.
- 6:24Number three, being seen is a risk worth
- 6:28taking.
- 6:29So just to be seen, to be heard,
- 6:33it's a risk.
- 6:35But if you don't take the risk, guys,
- 6:37how are you ever going to know?
- 6:39How are you ever going to possibly reach
- 6:42that opportunity?
- 6:46You're not.
- 6:48Being seen is a risk.
- 6:50Being heard is a risk.
- 6:51Get used to it.
- 6:53Get comfortable being uncomfortable.
- 6:56Number four, real close to starts with vulnerability.
- 6:59I don't care whether we're talking about building
- 7:03a personal friendship, a romantic relationship, or even
- 7:10a business relationship starting, it's important to understand
- 7:13what's going on, okay?
- 7:16It's important to understand that because when you
- 7:18understand that, your life will change every single
- 7:21day.
- 7:24Real close to starts with vulnerability.
- 7:26But most people don't want to be vulnerable.
- 7:28They're so afraid of being vulnerable, you know?
- 7:33They feel like the world's going to end
- 7:35if they're vulnerable.
- 7:36But it's not, ladies and gentlemen.
- 7:37It's actually going to get better.
- 7:39But sometimes it gets scary, all right?
- 7:44Sometimes it gets scary, and that's something we
- 7:45have to understand.
- 7:47So you have to practice being comfortable being
- 7:48uncomfortable.
- 7:50Number five, risk is the price of belonging.
- 7:56I'm doing that right now.
- 7:57I'm building a group.
- 7:58When I reach out to these people, I'm
- 8:01taking the risk.
- 8:04I'm talking about, are they going to accept
- 8:09what I'm talking about?
- 8:10Or take the way you have to do
- 8:18it.
- 8:19I'm going to say take the way.
- 8:22In a way, it's not going to harm
- 8:23or hurt people.
- 8:24In a way, it's not going to make
- 8:26them feel good.
- 8:29In a way, it's going to be casual,
- 8:31low pressure, okay?
- 8:38Low pressure.
- 8:40There's no low pressure in the case of
- 8:47success.
- 8:51People grow when they step forward.
- 8:54People grow when they step forward.
- 8:57But a lot of people are afraid of
- 9:00taking a step.
- 9:01They think a step is going to make
- 9:02them fall off the earth.
- 9:03It's not, guys.
- 9:05I got news for you.
- 9:06It is not going to make you fall
- 9:08off the earth.
- 9:11Nope, it's not going to do that at
- 9:13all.
- 9:14It's not going to make you fall off
- 9:16the earth.
- 9:18But I can tell you this, guys.
- 9:21It's going to make a difference for you.
- 9:24It's going to make a difference.
- 9:25And that difference, I feel, is going to
- 9:29help you be the person you want to
- 9:31be.
- 9:32And that might sound a little bit crazy.
- 9:37But it's important to understand what that really
- 9:41means.
- 9:42And what that means is you have more
- 9:45potential than you even think is possible.
- 9:51You have more potential than you even think
- 9:53is possible.
- 9:57That's pretty wild.
- 10:00So it comes from belief, guys.
- 10:03All right?
- 10:04Number seven, no risk, no depth.
- 10:09You don't take a risk, you're not going
- 10:12to grow.
- 10:15You may not lose anything, but you also
- 10:17may not gain anything either.
- 10:18And I think that's a very big challenge
- 10:20for a lot of people to have to
- 10:24undertake.
- 10:25No risk, no depth, no change.
- 10:28You stay exactly where you are.
- 10:30Not higher, not lower, exactly where you are.
- 10:33Number eight, courage opens doors.
- 10:36It really does.
- 10:38When we know that courage opens doors, we
- 10:41do it more.
- 10:44We do it more.
- 10:45I think that's a very important thing to
- 10:50understand that it opens doors.
- 10:54It really does.
- 10:56Number nine, speaking first is a risk.
- 11:01People don't do it because they're afraid of
- 11:04something that might happen to them.
- 11:09Yeah.
- 11:10So they figure, I'll just be quiet.
- 11:12I just won't say anything.
- 11:13And when I don't say anything, then I'll
- 11:18be okay.
- 11:23I'll be okay.
- 11:27But I can tell you a lot of
- 11:30people get scared.
- 11:35And they get scared because of what's happened
- 11:38in the past.
- 11:43And that doesn't mean you shouldn't go for
- 11:44it, but it really scares people.
- 11:50It petrifies them.
- 11:52I'm not talking about just scares them.
- 11:54It literally stops them dead in their tracks
- 11:58that they wouldn't think about doing anything else.
- 12:05That's important, guys.
- 12:09Showing up is a risk, number 10.
- 12:14Every day you show up, there's a potential
- 12:16you're going to go somewhere.
- 12:18But if you don't show up, you may
- 12:21go nowhere.
- 12:24Number 11, letting people in is a risk.
- 12:28We talked about entry a few days ago.
- 12:32Letting people in your life and how much
- 12:35you let them in, how close, what boundaries
- 12:39do you keep, that's a risk.
- 12:43It's a risk.
- 12:46Number 12, risk makes relationships real.
- 12:57Before I remember, I was texting myself, okay,
- 13:03should I delete this?
- 13:05And by accident, I actually typed, should I
- 13:08delete this, I guess there, and hit Enter,
- 13:11and he probably saw that I tried to
- 13:14delete it.
- 13:15But he got back to me very respectfully
- 13:18and said, just an answer to my question,
- 13:21but didn't chastise me or anything over the
- 13:24text.
- 13:24See, a lot of people, they get petty.
- 13:28And I think sometimes we worry about the
- 13:31stuff that's never going to happen.
- 13:33When you have somebody that's grounded and mature,
- 13:38it games like a kindergartner or a high
- 13:40school kid, okay?
- 13:44Risks make relationships real.
- 13:49And I think when something's real, we treasure
- 13:53it more.
- 13:55Number 13, the safe path is often the
- 13:59shallow one.
- 14:02That's the one that most people don't take,
- 14:06it's the path least taken.
- 14:14Important, guys, yeah, it's
- 14:24very important, very important.
- 14:35And I can tell you guys that if
- 14:39you understand this, then maybe you'll be like,
- 14:43wait a minute, now I get it.
- 14:55And when you start to have a little
- 14:57bit of understanding, you realize why the safe
- 15:08path is often the shallow one, but the
- 15:10safest isn't the one that's going to bring
- 15:12you success, guys.
- 15:14It's going to give you the most comfort,
- 15:21but it's not going to give you the
- 15:23potential to grow.
- 15:27Number 14, courage changes the room.
- 15:33When you have courage, everyone around you knows.
- 15:40It's not a loud speaker or a megaphone
- 15:45where it's like, hey, I got courage.
- 15:46No, having courage comes off loud, but it's
- 15:52soft.
- 15:53In other words, it's not screened at someone,
- 15:57but it's felt.
- 15:58People can tell when you have courage.
- 16:00Courage is in a leader.
- 16:03Certain qualities will get people to realize, hey,
- 16:06wait a minute.
- 16:07I see him or her differently now.
- 16:09I didn't know that he spoke.
- 16:10I didn't know that he could do that.
- 16:14Courage changes the room.
- 16:15Courage.
- 20:12Number 18 is small risks build bigger confidence.
- 20:22When we're trusted to do something small and
- 20:25we do it right, we will get more
- 20:29responsibility next time because we've demonstrated that we
- 20:35can be trusted.
- 20:38A lot of you only know want to
- 20:39start way at the tippy top, but they
- 20:41haven't even started at the bottom.
- 20:43How can we even start them in the
- 20:45middle?
- 20:45They haven't even done the first step yet.
- 20:47Number 19, being open is a choice.
- 20:53Lying is a choice too.
- 20:54Being honest is a choice.
- 20:57Being accountable is a choice.
- 20:59Being reliable is a choice.
- 21:02Being somebody who goes to bed at night
- 21:06and knows he or she did the right
- 21:07thing is a choice.
- 21:10The choice they've made not then.
- 21:13The choice they made when they did something.
- 21:15When they go to bed, they're regretting.
- 21:19That's not the choice.
- 21:20The choice is them making the action before.
- 21:25Number 20, guys, risk is how new bonds
- 21:28form.
- 21:32Risk is how new bonds form.
- 21:37New bonds form.
- 21:41And when that happens, life gets challenging.
- 21:48Some people want to just jump ship because
- 21:51they can't handle a little bit more, shall
- 21:56we say, responsibility.
- 21:58Or the fact that now you've got to
- 22:01be truthful.
- 22:03Truth shouldn't be something you have to do.
- 22:05It should be something you want to do.
- 22:07Number 21, guys, the fear is usually louder
- 22:10than reality.
- 22:14People worry so much about things.
- 22:18More than half of them don't even ever
- 22:20happen.
- 22:22But when you put energy on something and
- 22:24you focus on it, you direct toward it
- 22:27and it will happen.
- 22:30Number 22, guys, risk can be respectful and
- 22:35grounded.
- 22:37I agree to disagree with you.
- 22:44Number 23, growth lives past hesitation.
- 22:48Somebody who's hesitating about what step to take,
- 22:50when you have growth, you just move through.
- 22:53You know that you know that you know,
- 22:55and you just do it.
- 22:57That's a key insight, guys.
- 22:59Number 24, people respect truthful courage.
- 23:05Not everyone has truthful courage.
- 23:09Not everyone has it.
- 23:11But those that do walk softly and they
- 23:18carry a very big stick.
- 23:27Important, guys.
- 23:35If you could make a change right now
- 23:38in your life and figure out how to
- 23:43muster courage to do something, the next time
- 23:47you do something, it'll be easier.
- 23:49But now you'll have the courage to do
- 23:51something even harder.
- 23:53Number 25, guys, one brave move changes the
- 23:57dynamic.
- 23:59One brave move changes the dynamic.
- 24:07So bravery and courage go together.
- 24:12But your desire to take a step with
- 24:22intention is a choice.
- 24:25That's a choice.
- 24:27Number 26, taking a chance can unlock community.
- 24:36It can unlock commodity.
- 24:40Number 27, the moment before the risk is
- 24:43the one that matters.
- 24:46That split second before you take the risk,
- 24:50that's when it all culminates.
- 24:53That's when your brain's like, ah, I get
- 24:55it now.
- 24:56Number 28, risk is part of being real.
- 25:02If you tell me you don't take risks,
- 25:04you're not real.
- 25:05You're living a superficial life.
- 25:07Everyone tells me you don't risk, you're not
- 25:16being real.
- 25:16You're not being honest.
- 25:19And risk is part of being real.
- 25:23Number 29, guys, connection rewards courage.
- 25:26When you connect with somebody, your courage is
- 25:32rewarded and you wanna do more of that.
- 25:35Number 30, guys, belonging asks for bravery.
- 25:42You can't hide it.
- 25:45It's never gonna show up unless you truly
- 25:48are brave.
- 25:52And I want you to reflect on something.
- 25:57If you ever wanted deeper friendships, stronger trust,
- 26:03or a life that feels real.
- 26:11If you tell me you don't, you're lying
- 26:13to yourself.
- 26:16You're lying to yourself.
- 26:17I mean, that's just the truth.
- 26:19This, ladies and gentlemen, is your reminder.
- 26:23The fear is usually louder than the actual
- 26:27reality.
- 26:31And the right risk can change everything like
- 26:39that.
- 26:40Everything.
- 26:41Ladies and gentlemen, this is John C.
- 26:45Morley.
- 26:45And this has been Inspirations for Your Life.
- 26:49Thank you so much for stepping forward with
- 26:52me.
- 26:53Because life is about choices.
- 26:59And the choices we make allow us to
- 27:02celebrate later or regret the things we've done.
- 27:09Taking a risk can sometimes be a hard
- 27:13thing, but it also can be very rewarding.
- 27:17Have a great one, everyone, and be well.
