- 0:00Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 0:23Speaker 2: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 0:26Speaker 2: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. Welcome back
- 0:39Speaker 2: to the Sean O'Connell Show. Welcome in the voice of
- 0:41Speaker 2: the Utes, Bill Riley. A conversation brought to you every
- 0:44Speaker 2: single week here on the Sean O'Connell.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Show by Handy and Handy.
- 0:48Speaker 2: HandylawUtah.com for any personal injury concerns. or legal questions that
- 0:53Speaker 2: you have. Bill Riley, welcome to the show.
- 0:55Speaker 1: How are you, sir?
- 0:56Speaker 3: I am good, Sean O'Connell. Good Friday to you, sir.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Happy Friday to you.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I think you are leaving the beautiful Salt Lake Valley
- 1:05Speaker 2: to go to the rainy Midwest.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Is that correct?
- 1:11Speaker 3: I will be in Ames, Iowa, or picking up for Ames, Iowa,
- 1:16Speaker 3: in a little less than an hour. Okay.
- 1:20Speaker 2: This is the first road game for Utah this season
- 1:25Speaker 2: under Morgan Scali.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Obviously, they played the bowl game with him as the.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Acting head coach last year, but this is his program's
- 1:31Speaker 2: first road game, and it comes potentially with a little
- 1:35Speaker 2: bit of rain. I think that's not as big of
- 1:38Speaker 2: an issue as it being the first road game. What
- 1:41Speaker 2: are the adjustments in your mind for this team when
- 1:43Speaker 2: they're on the road for the first time?
- 1:46Speaker 3: Oh, I asked Morgan about that. It's more procedure than
- 1:50Speaker 3: anything else, just kind of traveling, what clothes to wear,
- 1:54Speaker 3: being to the airport on time, all that kind of stuff,
- 1:57Speaker 3: staying in the hotel, meetings, things like that. I think
- 2:00Speaker 3: it helps that it's a relatively early game. Mid-afternoon in Iowa,
- 2:05Speaker 3: you're not sitting around the hotel all day long. You'll
- 2:07Speaker 3: be there in the morning and then head over to
- 2:09Speaker 3: the stadium midday just a little bit. But I actually,
- 2:13Speaker 3: in my opinion, I think the rain's a bigger deal
- 2:15Speaker 3: than the first road trip just because you don't know
- 2:18Speaker 3: what the weather's going to be. It's probably going to
- 2:20Speaker 3: be raining, probably maybe at times heavy rain. The field's
- 2:24Speaker 3: in terrible condition, I've been told, by people in Ames.
- 2:27Speaker 3: So I actually think the weather and the rain and
- 2:32Speaker 3: the field might be bigger issues than the actual travel.
- 2:36Speaker 2: What's going on with their Kentucky bluegrass, which of course
- 2:40Speaker 2: has grown over a sand base that was at one
- 2:42Speaker 2: time called the best turf in college football?
- 2:47Speaker 3: I don't know, but they've had like 16 inches of
- 2:49Speaker 3: rain this month alone. We don't get 16 inches of
- 2:52Speaker 3: rain in like three years in Utah. They've got it
- 2:55Speaker 3: this month. Then they played a game last weekend, and
- 2:58Speaker 3: apparently the field's pretty torn up. So I'll be there
- 3:02Speaker 3: early tomorrow to put my eyes on it. But, yeah,
- 3:05Speaker 3: it's apparently not in great shape right now.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Okay, so we have Coordinator's Corner today with Kevin McGiven,
- 3:11Speaker 2: and that's part of a conversation when you're talking, especially
- 3:14Speaker 2: about your offensive play calls, because you still have to
- 3:18Speaker 2: put these guys in a good position. You still have
- 3:21Speaker 2: to put these guys in a spot where they can
- 3:23Speaker 2: find some success and How much do you think it
- 3:25Speaker 2: changes the play calling if the field is in bad
- 3:28Speaker 2: shape and wet?
- 3:30Speaker 3: I think probably a little bit. I mean, if it's raining,
- 3:33Speaker 3: you might want to limit the number of touches. You
- 3:36Speaker 3: may not see fly, sweep, reverse, option plays with your
- 3:40Speaker 3: two quarterbacks on the field together. I think you probably
- 3:43Speaker 3: want to limit some of that. I don't think it
- 3:45Speaker 3: necessarily limits how you want to call the game from
- 3:47Speaker 3: a pass or a run standpoint, but depending on how
- 3:51Speaker 3: the surface is and depending on if it's raining and
- 3:54Speaker 3: how hard it's raining, that might impact some of the
- 3:57Speaker 3: stuff that Utah likes to do. They might have to
- 3:59Speaker 3: be maybe a little bit more straightforward in their play calling,
- 4:02Speaker 3: maybe not as much side-to-side stuff as they've done in
- 4:05Speaker 3: the first three weeks. But I think they've probably planned
- 4:08Speaker 3: for this because the rain's been in the forecast again
- 4:11Speaker 3: long or all week long. So I would guess maybe
- 4:15Speaker 3: it limits you a little bit, but not completely for sure.
- 4:18Speaker 2: The side to side stuff was, was pretty successful against
- 4:22Speaker 2: Utah state. The more direct inside run stuff is where
- 4:26Speaker 2: maybe there were a couple of problems and we would have,
- 4:29Speaker 2: I'd probably be having a little different conversation if way
- 4:31Speaker 2: Sean's huge 90 plus yarder doesn't come back.
- 4:35Speaker 3: But.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Still, when you look at kind of the true average
- 4:39Speaker 2: on runs in that game against Utah State, and credit
- 4:41Speaker 2: to the Aggies, this is the thing that they're good at, runs,
- 4:45Speaker 2: especially runs between the tackles, kind of averaged three, three
- 4:47Speaker 2: and a half yards for the Utes last week. And
- 4:50Speaker 2: if you have to simplify your playbook a little bit
- 4:52Speaker 2: and you have to lean on that type of play
- 4:54Speaker 2: calling a little bit more in Ames, do we feel
- 4:57Speaker 2: any nervousness based on the results against Utah State?
- 5:01Speaker 3: No, I don't think so, because I think you can
- 5:03Speaker 3: still throw the football pretty well. And if you're starting
- 5:05Speaker 3: to throw it, maybe maybe you come out and you
- 5:07Speaker 3: throw the football a little bit early to loosen them up.
- 5:09Speaker 3: We do know Iowa State's pretty physical up front and
- 5:12Speaker 3: their coach is a defensive guy. And so maybe maybe
- 5:16Speaker 3: you come out and you loosen them up by throwing
- 5:18Speaker 3: that football. I think the thing that Utah's got an
- 5:20Speaker 3: advantage on this year, Sean, is I don't. think that
- 5:23Speaker 3: they have to lean into one style or the other
- 5:26Speaker 3: I think they can go whatever the defense gives them
- 5:29Speaker 3: they can kind of go the opposite way with it
- 5:31Speaker 3: so uh it will be interesting to see though if
- 5:34Speaker 3: they try to get way shot a little bit more
- 5:36Speaker 3: on track or impactful maybe trying to run that football
- 5:41Speaker 3: being on the road especially maybe they get a lead
- 5:43Speaker 3: maybe they're up you know, 10 in the second half,
- 5:45Speaker 3: maybe you'll lean a little bit more because they really,
- 5:47Speaker 3: you know, way Sean had the one big run last weekend,
- 5:50Speaker 3: but they haven't really fed it for, for a guy
- 5:52Speaker 3: that's running back one. They haven't really fed him the
- 5:54Speaker 3: football yet this year.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:56Speaker 2: We talked about that kind of a lot this week,
- 5:59Speaker 2: the appropriate number of touches for somebody like way, Sean,
- 6:03Speaker 2: who Devin Dampier made the great point with us in
- 6:06Speaker 2: addition with dev that He's doing the right thing even
- 6:09Speaker 2: when the ball is not in his hand. He's a
- 6:11Speaker 2: contributor and a captain and a leader even when he's
- 6:14Speaker 2: not getting those touches.
- 6:15Speaker 1: But that just.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Means you reward him even more with more touches. In
- 6:19Speaker 2: an ideal world, what do we see the average touches
- 6:22Speaker 2: for way Sean Parker as the season progresses?
- 6:25Speaker 3: I think 20 is a really good number. Maybe you're
- 6:28Speaker 3: getting him somewhere between 14 and 17 rushes. and maybe
- 6:33Speaker 3: three and four looks targets in the pass game. To me,
- 6:38Speaker 3: because you've got so many weapons and he's one of
- 6:41Speaker 3: your lead weapons, I think 20 touches feels right for
- 6:45Speaker 3: a guy. I mean, a guy like Wayshon probably said,
- 6:47Speaker 3: give me 30 touches. Let me run it 23 times
- 6:50Speaker 3: and catch it seven times. But I think when you've
- 6:52Speaker 3: got Daniel Bray and you've got Chavez Soto and you've
- 6:55Speaker 3: got Brayton Pagan and you've got Ricky Johnson and you've
- 6:57Speaker 3: got Bird Ficklin and Devin Dampierre, Getting 30 touches is just,
- 7:03Speaker 3: I just don't see that being in the cards for
- 7:05Speaker 3: anybody in the Utah offense. But I think 20 would
- 7:08Speaker 3: be a really good spot if you could average in
- 7:10Speaker 3: that number of 20. And with his 5.5, 6 yards
- 7:13Speaker 3: a carry, which is what he kind of averages at times,
- 7:16Speaker 3: did last year, I think that gets you that 100 yards,
- 7:18Speaker 3: and that makes you a pretty good contributor.
- 7:21Speaker 2: On the coach's show the other night, shout out to
- 7:23Speaker 2: you and Morgan Scali and Sly and everyone involved in that,
- 7:26Speaker 2: On the coach's show the other night, Morgan, I think,
- 7:28Speaker 2: closed things out saying, you know, we've got to get
- 7:30Speaker 2: some plays on special teams in a game like this one.
- 7:33Speaker 1: And you and I have talked about this over the years.
- 7:36Speaker 2: In the best years of Utah football, special teams have
- 7:39Speaker 2: been a major, major boon to their success. This year
- 7:42Speaker 2: we've already had a couple of miscues, especially in punt return.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Mana Carvalho appears on the injury report this week. It
- 7:50Speaker 2: looks like he had some issues handling the receptions, the postings,
- 7:54Speaker 2: taking punts again last week against Utah State.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Is there a change coming there?
- 7:59Speaker 3: I don't think so. I think they really like him.
- 8:01Speaker 3: I think we saw glimpses of what he could be
- 8:02Speaker 3: last year. Took a pretty good shot on that two-point
- 8:05Speaker 3: conversion swing and gate play. I think that may be
- 8:08Speaker 3: where he got dinged up a little bit last week.
- 8:10Speaker 3: I think they like mana in that game. The days
- 8:14Speaker 3: of kick returns are about done. What's funny is the
- 8:16Speaker 3: last time Utah played at Iowa state was 16 years ago.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Shakey Smithson had a huge punt return and Reggie Dunn
- 8:23Speaker 3: took one to the house on a kickoff. So maybe
- 8:25Speaker 3: there's something about Jack Christ stadium that will rejump that again.
- 8:28Speaker 3: I think it would be great if Monica get a
- 8:32Speaker 3: 15 or 20 yard punt return, maybe flip the field
- 8:34Speaker 3: just a little bit. This offense has been awfully good.
- 8:37Speaker 3: I just think if you stay mistake-free on the road,
- 8:40Speaker 3: it would be great to get a couple of explosives
- 8:42Speaker 3: in the special teams game, Sean. But if Dylan Curtis
- 8:45Speaker 3: makes his kicks... and if Orion Phillips has to punt
- 8:50Speaker 3: and he's good punting, I think it's more on the
- 8:52Speaker 3: other side. Iowa State has an all-league punt returner. They're
- 8:55Speaker 3: running back Aiden Flora. He took a punt return back
- 8:58Speaker 3: last week. He's returned a couple in his career, and
- 9:01Speaker 3: he got a kick return for a touchdown last week
- 9:03Speaker 3: against Bowling Green. To me, be mistake-free on your side
- 9:07Speaker 3: and cover kicks, and on the road, I think that's good.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Bill Riley, our guest here, the voice of the Utes,
- 9:12Speaker 2: getting ready to go to Ames, Iowa, to call Iowa
- 9:14Speaker 2: State versus Utah, which you can, of course, listen to
- 9:16Speaker 2: right here on your home of the Utes, ESPN 700
- 9:19Speaker 2: and 92.1 FM. It's fair to ask three games into
- 9:23Speaker 2: a season how good any team is, right, based on
- 9:26Speaker 2: results and competition and things like that. Iowa State is
- 9:29Speaker 2: more tested than Utah is. They played a ranked Iowa
- 9:32Speaker 2: team very closely in the Cy Hawk battle. They lost
- 9:36Speaker 2: that one, ultimately. They beat up on SEMO. They beat
- 9:39Speaker 2: up on Bowling Green, like you just mentioned. How good
- 9:41Speaker 2: is Iowa State, in your opinion?
- 9:44Speaker 3: I think they're good. I've talked to some people around
- 9:47Speaker 3: Iowa State. I think they're better than people expected them
- 9:49Speaker 3: to be. They're, right now at least, better than I
- 9:51Speaker 3: expected them to be, because I just didn't know. New coach,
- 9:54Speaker 3: 83 new players, no starters returning from a year ago.
- 9:57Speaker 3: I thought it could have been really a catastrophic backstab.
- 10:00Speaker 3: rebuild year for them. Jimmy Rogers has done a really,
- 10:03Speaker 3: really nice job, and I think they play really hard,
- 10:05Speaker 3: and Rogers is a tested player. good head football coach
- 10:09Speaker 3: who's won championships at the one double a level and
- 10:11Speaker 3: did a nice job at wazoo last year so i
- 10:14Speaker 3: think they're good i don't think they've played anybody as
- 10:17Speaker 3: good as utah i don't think they've played an offense
- 10:19Speaker 3: nearly as good as utah we all know that iowa
- 10:22Speaker 3: and iowa state is about field goals it is every
- 10:25Speaker 3: year anytime you play iowa it's about field position and
- 10:27Speaker 3: field goals they haven't played a team like utah so
- 10:30Speaker 3: i think this is a really good test for utah
- 10:32Speaker 3: going on the road but i think by far it's
- 10:34Speaker 3: the best test of the year for iowa or iowa
- 10:36Speaker 3: state too Right.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Now, Utah is giving up 2.68 yards per carry to
- 10:42Speaker 2: the opposing run game. Also, Iowa State has a guy
- 10:46Speaker 2: you just mentioned. Their running back, Aiden Flora, is right
- 10:49Speaker 2: now the top rusher in the conference.
- 10:51Speaker 1: He is averaging.
- 10:52Speaker 2: 8.6 yards per carry. I went and I broke it
- 10:55Speaker 2: down game by game. And even against Iowa, he was
- 10:58Speaker 2: averaging five yards a carry. Is that the biggest test
- 11:02Speaker 2: for Utah's defense this week? You've got to stop that
- 11:05Speaker 2: guy and that Iowa State run game in order to
- 11:08Speaker 2: get this game in hand.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Absolutely, positively. They throw it okay. Jalen Rayner's not a
- 11:14Speaker 3: bad quarterback. I'm not sure what the weapons are that
- 11:17Speaker 3: they have. in that past game because they really haven't
- 11:20Speaker 3: been established, and it's not nearly like the group that
- 11:22Speaker 3: they had a couple of years ago when they came
- 11:23Speaker 3: into Salt Lake City with the two, you know, Higgins
- 11:26Speaker 3: and Knoll, who were NFL draft choices and are playing
- 11:29Speaker 3: right now. I think it's stopping the run game. And
- 11:32Speaker 3: to be very fair, when Utah had some struggles defensively
- 11:37Speaker 3: toward the end of last year, namely in that Kansas
- 11:39Speaker 3: State game, it was against a team that wanted to
- 11:42Speaker 3: line up and run the football. And that's what I
- 11:44Speaker 3: think Iowa State wants to do, especially in the conditions tomorrow.
- 11:47Speaker 3: They've got a mobile quarterback, and they've got Flora who
- 11:50Speaker 3: can run it. They've got some decent complementary backs. but
- 11:54Speaker 3: they're going to want to line up and run that football.
- 11:56Speaker 3: And this is going to be, for me at least,
- 11:58Speaker 3: the first really big test of the year for that Utah. Again,
- 12:02Speaker 3: we saw a struggle at the end of last year,
- 12:04Speaker 3: and we'll see if they've kind of fixed some of
- 12:05Speaker 3: those things.
- 12:09Speaker 2: You saw Kalfusi also appearing on the injury report as questionable.
- 12:12Speaker 1: What do you know about his availability?
- 12:17Speaker 3: Know any specifics on it uh i think my expectation
- 12:20Speaker 3: until somebody tells me otherwise is that we see him
- 12:24Speaker 3: probably play this week along with carvalho but i haven't
- 12:27Speaker 3: been told one way or another i usually get the
- 12:29Speaker 3: update on it either tonight or first thing tomorrow morning.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Another minute or two here with bill riley voice of
- 12:35Speaker 2: the youth as he gets ready to call iowa state
- 12:38Speaker 2: versus utah uh Number one scoring offense, number one scoring
- 12:43Speaker 2: defense in the conference right now. This Utah football team
- 12:48Speaker 2: is just three games in. They're looking, I think, better
- 12:52Speaker 2: than a lot of people thought. The increased competition or
- 12:56Speaker 2: the tougher tests of Big 12 play, how big do
- 13:00Speaker 2: you think the jump is based on what Utah's already
- 13:03Speaker 2: played against versus what's coming in these next few weeks?
- 13:08Speaker 3: I don't know, Sean, if the next few weeks are
- 13:10Speaker 3: a big jump. I think they'll be a little bit
- 13:13Speaker 3: better than what they saw in the non-conference season. But
- 13:17Speaker 3: Iowa State, Kansas, and Colorado are... right now in the
- 13:22Speaker 3: big 12. So I think it will be a up,
- 13:25Speaker 3: but not a big step up. I really think this
- 13:28Speaker 3: schedule lays out nicely to kind of gradually ease you
- 13:31Speaker 3: into late October and November where the competition gets a
- 13:35Speaker 3: lot better for this team. But I think Iowa state
- 13:37Speaker 3: is going to be the best team they've played this year,
- 13:40Speaker 3: just from a toughness and organizational, it's a road game,
- 13:44Speaker 3: all of that stuff. So I think that will be
- 13:46Speaker 3: the case, but I don't think it's a huge step
- 13:49Speaker 3: up from what they saw in the non-conference.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Devin Dampier has been awesome so far. We have seen
- 13:56Speaker 2: him take some big hits, and it's only been three weeks.
- 13:59Speaker 2: As far as we know, we just had him in
- 14:01Speaker 2: studio not too long ago, and he looks healthy.
- 14:04Speaker 1: He's not limping around. He doesn't seem like he's hiding anything.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Aside from a little head cold, it looks like he's
- 14:10Speaker 2: as healthy and good as we're going to expect him
- 14:13Speaker 2: to be. But there's always more that you can find
- 14:16Speaker 2: in the gas tank for someone like that, especially with
- 14:18Speaker 2: his mastery of the offense and athleticism and now experience.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Are we going to get a better version of Devin
- 14:25Speaker 2: moving forward, or is this enough? Is this an adequate
- 14:29Speaker 2: level of production from the Utah quarterback for them to
- 14:31Speaker 2: pursue everything they want to pursue?
- 14:34Speaker 3: Well, I think you'd like to see him... I don't
- 14:36Speaker 3: think we've really seen Devin run the football much this year.
- 14:40Speaker 3: I think we haven't seen that creativity that he's got.
- 14:43Speaker 3: I think the offensive lines protected him very well, and
- 14:47Speaker 3: they've gotten the ball out to the playmakers.
- 14:49Speaker 1: I think.
- 14:50Speaker 3: I'm not saying we have to see it, but I
- 14:52Speaker 3: think that there's still– we haven't seen much of that
- 14:54Speaker 3: this year. We've seen a lot of that dual quarterback.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Bird Ficklin's probably run it a little bit more than
- 14:58Speaker 3: Devin has this year. So do I think there's more? Yeah,
- 15:02Speaker 3: I think there's more. But I think if they execute
- 15:05Speaker 3: the way they have and Devin protects the ball– he's
- 15:08Speaker 3: done a pretty good job protecting it. I know he
- 15:10Speaker 3: had to fumble last week, but– The one interception he
- 15:14Speaker 3: took a hit as he threw it. I'll say really
- 15:16Speaker 3: one turnover this year for him. His decision-making is really good.
- 15:20Speaker 3: The weapons are there. I think with what they're doing
- 15:24Speaker 3: now and what he's giving them now, I think it's
- 15:26Speaker 3: good enough to compete in this conference. To win it,
- 15:29Speaker 3: maybe to be a playoff team, maybe you need another
- 15:32Speaker 3: level up. But I think he's been pretty good so far.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Handicapping the Big 12 Conference in general, we learned a
- 15:39Speaker 2: little bit more about Houston and Texas Tech with the
- 15:41Speaker 2: game last Friday.
- 15:43Speaker 1: BYU still looking good. Utah still looking really good.
- 15:46Speaker 2: West Virginia might have one of maybe the most dynamic
- 15:49Speaker 2: quarterback in the whole conference. I wasn't expecting that. And
- 15:53Speaker 2: they get Nakari Rogers. We just learned that this week.
- 15:56Speaker 2: So as you look at kind of the power structure
- 15:59Speaker 2: of the Big 12 as it's shuffling out in these
- 16:01Speaker 2: first three weeks heading into week four, how do you
- 16:04Speaker 2: see it?
- 16:06Speaker 3: The top hasn't changed much for me, Sean. I thought
- 16:09Speaker 3: Tech would take a little bit of a step back,
- 16:11Speaker 3: and I think they have. They're still very good, but
- 16:13Speaker 3: I don't think they're quite as good as they were
- 16:14Speaker 3: last year, especially defensively. BYU kind of is what they are.
- 16:20Speaker 3: They are just a good, well-rounded, solid football team. I
- 16:23Speaker 3: think this is what I expected from Utah. I said
- 16:26Speaker 3: before the season the gap between Tech, BYU, and Utah
- 16:29Speaker 3: was very, very close. They may all be almost on
- 16:33Speaker 3: that same plane. It was that next level. I think
- 16:35Speaker 3: Houston's the best of that next group. I think I
- 16:38Speaker 3: was more impressed with their loss than Tech's win last
- 16:42Speaker 3: weekend at Lubbock. I think they're going to be a
- 16:44Speaker 3: tough out for Utah when they come here in about
- 16:47Speaker 3: a month or so. I still think Arizona's good. Here's
- 16:50Speaker 3: the team to keep an eye on, Sean, for me.
- 16:52Speaker 3: I think West Virginia's been a nice surprise with Rich Rod.
- 16:55Speaker 3: They've got a great running back in Cam Cook and
- 16:57Speaker 3: Michael Hawkins, their running back, or their quarterback. But keep
- 17:00Speaker 3: an eye on K-State. K-State does not have to play Utah.
- 17:04Speaker 3: They do not have to play BYU. And they do
- 17:06Speaker 3: not have to play Texas Tech in the regular season.
- 17:10Speaker 3: That's a pretty favorable schedule for Colin Klein. K-State's always good.
- 17:15Speaker 3: They're physical. They're tough. But not to have to play
- 17:18Speaker 3: any of those three teams in the regular season is
- 17:21Speaker 3: a pretty big deal. I'm still not sold on Avery Johnson,
- 17:25Speaker 3: their quarterback, even though he's been around forever. But I
- 17:28Speaker 3: think K-State could be a sneaky team that maybe if
- 17:32Speaker 3: a Utah or a BYU or a Tech stumbles a
- 17:34Speaker 3: little bit somewhere along the line, might be a team
- 17:37Speaker 3: that could sneak into Dallas.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we're going to have to keep a
- 17:42Speaker 2: closer eye on some of those what I had thought
- 17:44Speaker 2: in the preseason were fringe teams and now They've got
- 17:48Speaker 2: the players to potentially make that conversation go a little
- 17:51Speaker 2: bit differently. I put a poll question out based on
- 17:54Speaker 2: the century-plus drought of conference championships for Iowa State. And
- 18:00Speaker 2: you and I have both rooted for teams that have
- 18:02Speaker 2: gone through extensive droughts. But when you put on, not
- 18:06Speaker 2: your voice of anything hat, you put on a fan
- 18:08Speaker 2: hat like you do for your Royals and your Chiefs,
- 18:13Speaker 2: How many years does the drought of no championships have
- 18:16Speaker 2: to extend before emotionally you give up on the hope
- 18:19Speaker 2: of a championship? Now, you're always going to remain a
- 18:22Speaker 2: fan of your lifelong teams, but where you're not watching
- 18:25Speaker 2: it because you think they can win it anymore. How
- 18:28Speaker 2: long does that drought have to extend for Bill Riley?
- 18:32Speaker 3: Well, I mean, with the Royals, it extended a really,
- 18:34Speaker 3: really long time. And they won a championship about 10
- 18:38Speaker 3: years ago. To be fair with the Chiefs, I didn't
- 18:42Speaker 3: think they would ever win a championship. I really didn't
- 18:44Speaker 3: in my lifetime because their quarterback, their ability to find
- 18:47Speaker 3: a quarterback or washed up 49er quarterbacks was their plan
- 18:51Speaker 3: for so many years. And then the football gods blessed
- 18:54Speaker 3: us with Mahomes. I think it's different in college because
- 18:58Speaker 3: there's different levels. Like the Iowa State fans, they're always
- 19:01Speaker 3: going to love Iowa State. I don't think that they're
- 19:04Speaker 3: going in expecting to win conference championships, but if it happens,
- 19:07Speaker 3: it's great. With pro teams, I think if half your
- 19:12Speaker 3: lifetime goes by and you never see a championship, then
- 19:16Speaker 3: I think that's when the depression and the reality probably
- 19:19Speaker 3: begins to set in.
