- 5:42and when the wharf and east. I came back to my job on
- 5:44the forest and Max went back to his old job. It didn't fit him
- 5:46anymore. He stopped working and started drinking. His wife didn't help much.
- 5:51Max started with small trouble, but it grew fast. On the afternoon of
- 5:55February the eighth Tuesday, Ben and I surprised two men holding up a main
- 5:59street jewelry jo. Shots were exchanged and Ben received the flesh wound in the
- 6:02shoulder. One of the hold up men escaped, the other one was apprehended.
- 6:05His name was Max Tyler. Hi, Larry, Hi. Joe,
- 6:15Glad you got here. Twas says you won't talk to anybody but you.
- 6:18Okay, boy, thanks for standing by. Sure, I'll be outside you
- 6:21anything. Max, Joe, you're in deep this time. You shot a
- 6:32cop. I didn't. This guy was with me. I didn't fire one.
- 6:35You were in on the job. Yeah. Men don't expect presents.
- 6:40I don't expect anything. Joe, Glad you came back. I don't want
- 6:44to talk to those other cops. I work in the same department. They
- 6:46do same job. It's easier to talk to you. What's your story?
- 6:49I was crazy to try it. No alibised, Joe, but I didn't
- 6:54know what I was doing. Believe me, I just didn't. Really,
- 6:56I won't buy it. Max. You told me the same thing fourteen months
- 6:58ago when they picked up with those checks you were passing. Sure, I
- 7:01hung some paper, but I'm no who with Joe. You all that I
- 7:05was drinking. I need a dough for Darthy and the kids. You gotta
- 7:08believe me. I need a break. I said that before too. I
- 7:10went to bat for you, got off with six months and three years probation.
- 7:13Now you turn up with another caper. I'm not you know, I'm
- 7:17sorry. You're sorry. Once accident works, but one free rides enough for
- 7:20anybody. That's it. Did I say I wanted that kind of a break.
- 7:24I'll serve my time, Joe. I'll serve every day I owe.
- 7:28And then what can you tell me you couldn't have told the other cops.
- 7:30I want to ask your favor. Yeah, I know you're gonna hook me
- 7:34on this. So while I'm doing my time, Darthy and the kids are

- 7:57Yeah, sure, I'll take care of it. You do something for me,
- 8:00anything you want. Guy, let's have the straight story. Who was
- 8:01the guy with you on that hold up this afternoon? George crest you know,
- 8:05and not a fulsome short guy black hair. Yeah, he's got a
- 8:09room above the Red Owl Bar down East Third near Broadway. That's where he's
- 8:11at. Where can we find Creston? Now? Oh maybe there, I
- 8:15don't know. I'll give you a list of the places he goes, some
- 8:18of those friends I've met. Sure rope me said there was going to be
- 8:22an arrested. You were carrying an S and W thirty eighth. Sure.
- 8:24Sure. When they got outside the jewelry shot, Creston jammed the gun in
- 8:28my hand. I had to put it away, get it out of sight,
- 8:31believe me. Joey wrote me into this, said it sounds like an
- 8:33alibi. No, this is your second time around, Max, it sounds
- 8:37like one. Okay, I got nothing coming. Don't forget about Dorothy and
- 8:43the kids. And I promised you. Now you want to give me a
- 8:45full statement on the hold up now, and then you say, Joe,
- 8:48I'll call for a stenographer. Joe, yeah, I'm sorry. I am
- 8:56I believe you. You got the feeling too late, that's all. Max
- 9:01Tyler was arraigned in municipal court two days later. Bail was set at ten
- 9:05thousand dollars. Three days after that came his preliminary hearing a municipal court.
- 9:11At his arraignment in Superior Court, five weeks after he'd been apprehended, Tyler
- 9:16entered a plea of nutt yilly. A date was set for his trial in
- 9:18Superior Court. Meantime, the hunt for George Crest, of Max's accomplice,
- 9:22went on. There wasn't a sign of him. Our informants had no lead
- 9:24on him, and the All Points bulletin containing all the information we had on
- 9:28Crest had brought in nothing. On Monday, March twenty second, the trial
- 9:31of Max Tyler was held in Superior Court. Ben and I were subpoena to
- 9:35appear the victim of the hold up. The jewelry store manager was the first
- 9:39to testify. He was questioned by both the prosecutor and the council for the
- 9:41defense. He left the stand at eleven twenty five am. Did invade your
- 9:46honor before the next witness testified? I'd like permission to approach the bench.
- 9:54Mission granted Acrosssecuture Mill What that saw about something? So I know, Judge
- 10:01he's shaking his hand and public defenders going back to the council state there,

- 12:31I love it, Joe. What am I gonna do without him? Children?
- 12:37I'll give it you straight, Dorothy. You didn't do much to keep
- 12:39Max out of this. You drink right along with him. You don't deserve
- 12:41those kids. That's my approbace, know it. Don't make it any hard.
- 12:45I'll do anything I can for the kids, Dorothy, that's all.
- 12:48Who am I gonna do without him? I can't be all alone without Max.
- 12:54It's not right. It's not right. Neither's armed robbery. Goodbye,
- 12:58Dorothy. Before the end of March, Max Tyler was delivered to San Quentin
- 13:05State Penitentiary, where he started serving his term. His wife, Dorothy Tyler,
- 13:09got a job as a telephone operator. She and her children continued living
- 13:11with her relatives down in Inglewood. I helped them out whenever I could.
- 13:16Six months went by. Every two weeks faithfully. Tyler wrote me a letter
- 13:18from prison. I answered most of them. While Ben and I worked on
- 13:22other jobs. The search for George Preston went on. We failed to uncover
- 13:26a single lead. Ten months past. Tuesday, January sixteenth, nineteen forty
- 13:30nine, four pm, I checked in for work as usual. A Hi,
- 13:35Joe, hold u huh? Yeah? Did you pick up the mails?
- 13:37Letter in your box from San Quentin Tyler? How's he doing anyway?
- 13:41Good clean record, got himself a pretty fair job in the prison library.
- 13:46Yeah. I talked to the warden up there, says Tyler ought to be
- 13:48eligible for parole about a year if he keeps his nose clean. You going
- 13:52to Bedford Tyler again? I don't know see what happens? Can you see
- 13:56anything in that guy? He's giving you nothing but trouble. A lot of
- 13:58people give him the same. Maybe that explains it. Not for me,
- 14:01it doesn't. I wouldn't trust him with dirty lunder. I get it.
- 14:05Robbery Friday. Joe's Dorothy Tyler. I gotta talk to you, Yeah,
- 14:11Dorothy, what's a manner? I found? Christ? I saw him.
- 14:13What George Christa, I know where he is. I saw him downtown.
- 14:16I followed him to his place. Be sure it was him. I'm positive
- 14:20he's staying at one three four Jesse Street. It's a room in house just
- 14:24all Alameda, one three four Jesse got it, Thanks, Dorothy, Come
- 14:30on Ben. Eight minutes later, Ben and I were interviewing the landlord at
- 14:37one thirty four Jesse Street, cheap rooming house down on the south end of
- 14:39the city. The landlord's name was Peterson. We showed him Crest's mugshot and
- 14:43he told us he was in room eleven. We went up a dark,
- 14:46narrow stairway to the second floor. Here we are, remember eleven. I'd
- 14:56stand clear. I'll try the door. It's open. Yeah, yoh,
- 15:03I have a look. Yes, Lee has passed out. Come and slipped
- 15:05the cuffs on. That was easy, all right. I got his gun.
- 15:16He's been drinking, all right. You have a big hangover. You'll
- 15:20have a long time to get over it. George Crester was booked at Couty
- 15:26Jail in suspicion of robbery. Two months and three weeks later, in Superior
- 15:30Court, he was tried and convicted of assault with a deadly weapon and first
- 15:33degree robbery and sentenced to the state penitentiary. The day after crest was sentenced,
- 15:37I was called of the Office of Chief Detectives Thad Brown Friday. This
- 15:41Max Tyler is coming up for parole in a couple of months. He's a
- 15:43friend of yours, isn't he. That's right in a way. He's been
- 15:46writing letters to the warden. We talked to the parole board about him.
- 15:48Understand, you're helping on his kids a few presents. They haven't had much
- 15:52of a break. It's just youngsters working hard to get Tanna's parole. You
- 15:56think he's worth it. Well, I was off both him and his wife,
- 15:58and then she gave us that tip about Creston. Tyler's got such a
- 16:02good record up a que and figured they'd earned another chance. You're sticking the
- 16:06chin on Joe, helping a can to get a pearle. I think you'll
- 16:07realize that. Oh, I believe he's a good risk now. She he's
- 16:11pretty weak in some things. He needs direction, that's all. His wife's
- 16:14getting better. She might help more than she did. Hope both of them
- 16:17are worth her. If anything happens, I know I'm going to get it
- 16:18from all sides. You really think some men deserve another chance, don't you.
- 16:22Yes, sure I do. I wouldn't want your working for me if
- 16:26you didn't. Two more weeks went by. Tuesday, April nineteenth, Ben
- 16:33came down with a bad cold and had to lay off work. At the
- 16:36same time, a new gang started a hold up campaign among the liquor stores
- 16:38out in the Wilshire district. A new rash of armed robberies broke out in
- 16:42the central area. There was an attempted bank robbery. It was a bad
- 16:45week. Ben got back to work on Saturday. Rough time, mon Joe
- 16:49busy. Yeah, you beat that cold, all right, Shoe. I
- 16:52feel much better. Doctor gave me some new medicine works doing. That's fine.
- 16:56Maybe I'll knock off earlier than that if nothing's doing. Yeah, it
- 17:00shouldn't leave too much tonight. Oh thanks, Larry. Sure smile of Joe.
- 17:07Max Tyler broke out of prison this morning. You are listening to dragnet
- 17:22authentic stories of your police force in action. In the course of his career,
- 17:30the police officer has afforded two diverse views of the criminal. At first,
- 17:34the rookie cop is taught to distrust the criminal at every turn, without
- 17:37exception. He's schooled in the thousand and one ways in which the criminal operates,
- 17:42his psychology, his mode of operation. Then, when he's thoroughly acquainted
- 17:47with the methods of the criminal and how best to detect them, the police
- 17:49officer starts to learn the most difficult lesson of all, how to distinguish between
- 17:53the confirmed criminal and the lawbreaker in whom there is hope of rehabilitation. For
- 18:00nine and a half years of police work, my first experiment in this field
- 18:03was with Max Tyler. I'd given him two chances to prove himself, and
- 18:06he'd lost on both of them, so did I. Two months before his
- 18:10parole hearing, which might have given him his freedom, Max Tyler had suddenly
- 18:14decided to escape. How he figured it, I didn't know, but it
- 18:15was my job to find him. At five o'clock that afternoon, Ben and
- 18:19I met in the Chief of Detective's offices. Two officers, Holland and Grayson
- 18:22from the State Adult Authority Escape Detail were there. How did Tyler manage his
- 18:26escape? Grayson, same old story. They figured they could trust him up
- 18:30there. He had a good job on the prison final and they trusted him
- 18:33when they find out he was gone on the early morning count. Have you
- 18:34checked his relatives out in Englewood yet, Yeah, we have. We've got
- 18:37the home staked out, recovering all the places we figured he might go.
- 18:41How about missus Tyler, You get in touch with her, Freddy. Her
- 18:42relatives told us that she's on a weekend vacation with the two kids, staying
- 18:47with friends down in Laguna Beach. We got a call in to them.
- 18:48Should be hearing from soon. I understand Tyler's a friend of yours. Friday
- 18:52he was ready for parole. Yeah. I was trying to help him along.
- 18:56I thought the guy deserved a break. He didn't need you. Joey
- 18:59made his own. He was feeling bad. You weren't the only one fool
- 19:02Friday, ye had. The prison official was Buffalo too. Yeah, I
- 19:06know. I helped convince them. You got any leeds on Tyler at all?
- 19:08Grayson, I mean from the time he broke prison. Pretty strange.
- 19:12It traced him as far as Stockton and they lost the trail completely. The
- 19:15Stockton police in on the search. Yeah, sure, funny. The guy
- 19:18has no money, no car, We know of, no change of clothes.
- 19:22You figure he's getting helped from somebody, could be excuse me, not
- 19:26Ron speaking. Oh just a moment you Friday, Well, thank you Friday.
- 19:32Yeah? When where just a minute? We hold on please, So
- 19:37Tyler's friends down to Laguna Beach, mis this Tyner there? No. She
- 19:41called him last night about seven o'clock, told him she changed her plan.
- 19:42She wasn't coming. She told them where she was going. She wanted to
- 19:45know which highway would take her to Stockton. We told the Tyler's friends in
- 19:51the Laguna Beach to contact us immediately if they heard from either mister or Missus
- 19:55Tyler. We got out on APB on Dorothy Tyler, and then we drove
- 19:57out the interviewer relatives and they told us that Missus Tyler had the two children
- 20:03with her. She had left their house at six pm the night before by
- 20:06taxi. As far as they knew, she didn't own a car. We
- 20:08talked with some of her friends in the neighborhood. The only thing they could
- 20:11tell us was that she had not borrowed a car for many of them.
- 20:15We drove down to the telephone exchange where she was employed as an operator,
- 20:18and we spoke with a manager of mister Ralph Cartwright. I'm sorry, gentlemen,
- 20:22this is missus Tyler's night off. Is there something I can help you
- 20:26with? When there's Missus Tyler do back work, mister Cartwright. She's working
- 20:30the ten to seven starting tomorrow doing at ten am. We understand that she's
- 20:36on a weekend vacation. Yeah, you see, today was payday. So
- 20:38she asked me if she could have her check ahead of time. Said she
- 20:41had to have the money for the weekend. Would you give her the check?
- 20:45Oh mind, No, I couldn't give her the check ahead of time,
- 20:48but I did do her a favor just to help her over the weekend.
- 20:51What was that I loaned my car? We got a complete description of
- 20:56the car together with a license number and call the office. The information was
- 21:00broadcast to all units throughout the city and teletype to all points in the state.
- 21:04Chief of Detectives that Brown ordered an immediate steak out on the telephone exchange
- 21:07where Missus Tyler was employed. The steak out at the home of Inglewood continued.
- 21:12Another day passed. We checked with the bank where Missus Tyler maintained her
- 21:15account was ten twenty five am when we got back to robbery detail. Gentlemen,
- 21:22what'd you find out as Tyler closed your account three days ago with Drew
- 21:25Oller saved four to six dollars and fifty five cents. And you're not going
- 21:27to go far on that. Any word about that car she borrowed teletype came
- 21:32in about an hour ago. They found it just outside Santa Barbara abandoned.
- 21:34Anyone see the Tylers. No reports. I wonder how those poor kids making
- 21:38that. We must be crazy. And his wife too. She was going
- 21:41to help him pull an the skatewidle. She have to drag the kids along.
- 21:44It's away. Some parents figure Friday, they owe their children nothing.
- 21:47The children owe them every change Golfway Friday, dat unto Oh thanks Larry Friday.
- 21:56Is it Hopkins Friday on? Steak up the phone exchange? Yeahbert Tyler.
- 22:00Woman came through a trick. We got it. Dorothy Tyler was brought
- 22:08into the city Hall. Whether it was one of her children, he was
- 22:11delivered to the juvenile authorities for the time being. Missus Tyler was brought the
- 22:15interrogation room. She refused to admit anything to the officers from the adult authority.
- 22:19She said she wanted to talk to me. I went in. She
- 22:22threw her arms around me and started trying. You won't let him get next
- 22:26with you. You won't let them. I'm after him as much as they
- 22:30are, maybe more. Where is he? I can't tell you. Why'd
- 22:36you do it? Dorothy? Why you know why I had to see him.
- 22:41I had to be with Max. It's a bum deal. You traded
- 22:44days for years. If I don't tell him where he is, I won't
- 22:48find HIM'LL find him. He's got to eat, so do you and the
- 22:51kids. He has to go to work, and working with a gun as
- 22:52all he knows, he'll leave the trail. We'll find him. What have
- 22:57they done to the children? Chris, Jimmy and taking care of him?
- 23:00That's more than you did. Where's your other boy? Vans Mac mac cousin.
- 23:07That's fine? And Max ought to be a real pride of yourselves.
- 23:11I had to see him, you know that. I had to see you.
- 23:15Mag Has he got a gun as he as he used it? No,
- 23:22he just thought he might need it. He hasn't hurt anyone. I
- 23:25swear it. You helped him escape, is that right? You helped him
- 23:29he needed help. I met him at San Ravelle. We drove all night.
- 23:34He didn't hurt anyone, show he hadn't heard anyway. Where is he
- 23:37now? Where is he? All right, Dorothy, we'll find him,
- 23:45Joe if I tell you, If I tell you, would you go alone?
- 23:55I can show you the way. Would you go alone? Yeah?
- 24:00All right, I'll take you to him. Joe. I trust you.
- 24:06Yeah. I trusted him once too. Five pm, Monday, April twenty
- 24:12fifth, Dorothy Tyler, Ben and I got in the car and headed north
- 24:15for the coast town of Santa Maria, acting under orders of Chief of Detectives
- 24:19Thad Brown. Larry Thompson from robbery Detail followed in another car. Holland and
- 24:25Grayson from the State Adult Authority were with him. It was ten minutes past
- 24:27eight when we drove through the town of Santa Maria. Just outside the city,
- 24:30Dorothy Tyler directed us to turn off onto a dirt road. We drove
- 24:34about two months. She told us to pull up. Proceeds for you.
- 24:42Shack by those trees. No man out here. I'll go with you,
- 24:47Joe, maybe Max. You won't understand you stay here, Joe. Hood
- 24:51car car stopped you. It's Cox Dorthy. It had to be. They
- 24:55won't shoot unless Max days we said to go alone. I'll go alone.
- 25:04Riding Hello, Grayson, where is he? Should tell you? That shack
- 25:07over there across the field. But that clump of trees, he's got one
- 25:11of the kids within that right. Yeah, he won't be any trouble.
- 25:12He's armed. The cons up at Quinton and say he won't be taking a
- 25:15lie. They say he'll shoot it out. They talk a lot better.
- 25:18Let us take him. You're not getting paid for this one. I'll take
- 25:22him alone. I made a promise the guy in the shacks, and they
- 25:23have a breaking promise. I keep in mind. Keep an eye on this.
- 25:26Todd will he been? Thompson's watching around coming with you? I told
- 25:30her I'd go alone. There's two doors front and back. Which one you're
- 25:33going in front? I'll be around back. Yeah, yeah, I'll be
- 25:41right back Rayson. I started to cross the field. Shack was about one
- 25:48hundred yards from the road. The field was uncutivated and I wasn't sure of
- 25:53my footing. I stumbled over a tree stump. Halfway cross the field.
- 26:00The lights in the shack went out. Where's that? Where is it?
- 26:07Me? Max? Yo? Pridy? Max? Come on, open up
- 26:26all right? Max, Why the gun, Joe? I never thought you'd
- 26:36take me with a gun. I never thought I'd have to kick down a
- 26:37door to get you. You've changed a lot, Max, how'd you find
- 26:41me? Dorothy? Tell you? Where is she outside? Your boy over
- 26:48there, Vans, you're sleeping, He's okay, butt out your hands.
- 26:52Put out your hands, sorry, Joe, Yeah, given good to his
- 27:03home and try to explain neither. Will I am axed? Come on,
- 27:12the story you have just heard was true, only the names were changed to
- 27:18protect the innocent. On June's second trial was held in Superior Court, City
- 27:23and County of marin State of California. In a moment the results of that
- 27:27trial, Max Tyler pleaded guilty to the charge of escape and was sentenced to
- 27:40the term as prescribed by law. He was returned to San Quentin and then
- 27:44transferred to Fulsome Penitentiary, where he is now serving his sentence. You have
- 27:52just heard Dragnet, a new series of authentic cases from official files. Technical
- 27:57advice for Dragnet comes from the office of Acting Chief of Police W. A.
- 28:02Wharton, Los Angeles Police Department. Dragnet honors the State of California and
- 28:07the men of the California Highway Patrol, another of America's outstanding law enforcement agencies.
- 28:14One of these men, Highway Patrol Commissioner Clifford E. Peterson, outstanding
- 28:18administrator and educator in the field of law enforcement, dedicates his life to making
- 28:25yours more secure. Be sure to hear mister and Missus Ronald Coleman in the
- 28:30Halls of Ivy starting tomorrow on NBC Welcome Back Well the first ever nineteen fifties
- 28:45Dragnet episode, and it's definitely very different. One thing that people hold in
- 28:52general is a view about Dragnet is that it was very black and white.
- 29:02But this episode definitely takes us into a gray area, an area where judgment
- 29:10and hard choices, and it was an interesting episode. As I said,
- 29:15this is the type of story that, in many ways, you wouldn't get
- 29:18in the nineteen sixties, when Friday just became such an iconic character. Here
- 29:25there's a definite backstory in place, with Friday going off to the war and
- 29:33trying to help an old friend. Friday definitely can seem a bit blunt in
- 29:37dealing with the wife after sentencing, but it was pretty clear that through the
- 29:45story that bluntness was what was called for. I thought the whole family dynamic
- 29:49they portrayed here was very realistic and very tragic. Well, I've never known
- 29:56people in this exact situation. I don't think that there are many people for
- 30:00whom the max Tylers of this world are entirely foreign. Well, now we
- 30:06turn to listener comments and feedback, and we have a comment from Aaron White
- 30:12who just notes that this is a classic episode. Well, thanks so much,
- 30:15Aaron. And then I have an email from Dan who says, I'm
- 30:21not sure if you are aware that your mike really sounds terrible while relating your
- 30:26comments after each episode, it produces an echoed slash tunnel sound. And then
- 30:30I also had a tweet from Mike who says, Adam, have you switched
- 30:37your mike recently? Your voice has changed a lot. Sounds soft in money.
- 30:41I listen every day. I love show. Well, Mike, I
- 30:47have actually changed Mike, not you, but the thing I talk into three
- 30:53times in the past three months. I started out I replaced my old Mike
- 31:03with another snowball and received complaints on that. So I switched to a Logitech
- 31:12headset and receive some complaints on that. And then I thought that the sound
- 31:18quality I was getting off of my a Kindle was actually not all that bad,
- 31:25and so through yesterday i'd been using that for a while, and so
- 31:27as of today's episode, I'm back to the Logitech Mike. Now. I
- 31:33do have a request if any of our listeners notice any sound issues, and
- 31:37that is just to let us know specifically what episode you're calling about or have
- 31:45the issue with, perhaps what episode you started to notice the issue with the
- 31:52sound, because without some information as to when you started the issue, what
- 31:57show you heard it on, I really can't isolate it and find out what's
- 32:01going on. And if I can make an improvement that will make the sound
- 32:06quality of the commentary better, I definitely want to do it. I would
- 32:09also say that there's a little bit of limitation within this, just because I
- 32:15don't have what you would call a studio environment to record it. We've got
- 32:21about a three foot by four foot little corner in my townhouse here that I'm
- 32:25recording in. But within that framework, I want to have the best recording
- 32:30I possibly can. So again, if you do have a concern about sound
- 32:36quality, please email in with as much as many specifics as you can.
- 32:42If you merely mentioned do you know that there's a problem with your MIC.
- 32:47I wouldn't know, for example, what show you were listening to, what
- 32:51stage we were at in switching out various microphones. And if a problem starts
- 32:58and you notice it continue, it can be helpful for me if I know
- 33:01when it started, so then I can go back and see if I change
- 33:06something or if there's some sort of problem on my system. So as much
- 33:09specifics as possible, that's really appreciated to pinpoint these sort of issues. All
- 33:15right, well, that will do it for today. We will be back
- 33:20on Monday with the Saint and join us back here next Saturday for dragging it
- 33:25in the meantime. Sendor commons to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net,
