Latest / The Gathering Line / Brent-WTI Spread Widens as Rockies Barrels Get Squeezed
Transcript
- 0:00Saturday, October third.
- 0:02Here's what moved since Friday morning, and what it means for Rockies and Bakken
- 0:06barrels.
- 0:07Global first.
- 0:09Brent settled Friday at one hundred two dollars and twenty five cents,
- 0:12down six cents on the day and up about a tenth of a percent on the week.
- 0:17The catalyst was the G7 and the European Union agreeing to coordinate a release of
- 0:21one hundred million barrels through the I E A over four months.
- 0:25That's fifty million barrels of European diesel and fifty million of crude,
- 0:29with French President Macron describing the four month timeline.
- 0:33The pressure fell on W T I, not Brent, and that's what matters for us.
- 0:38W T I settled at ninety one eleven, down a dollar seventy six,
- 0:42after touching an intraday low of eighty eight oh six.
- 0:45It's down about one point six percent on the week.
- 0:48The Brent premium over W T I blew out to eleven dollars and fourteen cents.
- 0:53That's a strong pull on Gulf Coast waterborne exports, and it tells you where
- 0:56marginal barrels want to go.
- 0:59Geopolitics stayed noisy.
- 1:01Persian Gulf exports are back near prewar levels but erratic.
- 1:05UKMTO reported a crude tanker struck by an unidentified projectile off Oman,
- 1:10and the U.S.
- 1:11is sending a third carrier strike group.
- 1:13Desk reports also say Chinese refiners suspended refined fuel exports for October,
- 1:18Ukraine hit Russian refining in Samara and Volgograd, OPEC plus delayed a capacity
- 1:24review, and Barclays lifted its fourth quarter Brent forecast by twenty dollars to
- 1:28one fifteen.
- 1:30Those last items come from desk notes, and I haven't tied them to primary text,
- 1:33so weigh them accordingly.
- 1:35North America.
- 1:37Western Canadian Select at Hardisty widened to sixteen sixty five under W T I,
- 1:41according to CalRock brokerage data.
- 1:43That's about a dollar fifty wider on the week.
- 1:46The explanation is Midwest refinery turnarounds taking fewer heavy barrels,
- 1:50plus a strong front month W T I.
- 1:53Canadian rigs jumped eight to two hundred sixteen, per Baker Hughes.
- 1:57Enbridge Express is reported running full into Casper.
- 2:00Trans Mountain is running around sixty percent, but the four hundred twenty five
- 2:04thousand barrel per day figure in my notes doesn't reconcile with that,
- 2:08so treat it as soft.
- 2:10Pemex keeps trimming Maya exports to feed Dos Bocas.
- 2:13Nothing else material.
- 2:15United States.
- 2:16The latest scheduled E I A release is Wednesday's, for the week ending September
- 2:20twenty fifth.
- 2:22Commercial crude rose nine hundred twenty two thousand barrels to four hundred
- 2:25twenty seven point three two million.
- 2:28I don't have a consensus number, so I can't give you the surprise.
- 2:31The regional split is the useful part.
- 2:34The Midwest built one point zero four million to one hundred five point one one
- 2:38million, and the Gulf Coast built three point four two million to two hundred forty
- 2:42seven point five million.
- 2:44The Rockies drew eight hundred twenty three thousand barrels to twenty two point
- 2:47five million, which is about three hundred twenty three thousand below a year ago.
- 2:52Cushing is where my notes disagree with themselves.
- 2:55They cite tank bottoms near fourteen point six million barrels and also a range of
- 2:59twenty to twenty two million.
- 3:01I can't confirm the latest weekly Cushing figure, so I'll say only that it remains
- 3:05thin and keeps prompt barrels at a premium.
- 3:08Baker Hughes had the U.S.
- 3:09rig count down one to five hundred ninety eight, which is forty nine above a year
- 3:13ago.
- 3:14Enbridge's two point five five billion dollar Tallgrass crude deal,
- 3:17including seventy five percent of Pony Express, was reported by R B N on September
- 3:21fifteenth.
- 3:22It's not new, but it changes who you'll negotiate with.
- 3:26Uinta Basin.
- 3:27Nothing genuinely new in the last day, but the structure is worth restating.
- 3:31Yellow wax is commanding about a three dollar twenty premium at Gulf Coast
- 3:35refineries.
- 3:36Salt Lake refiners cap out around eighty thousand barrels per day of waxy crude,
- 3:40so every incremental barrel goes by rail or heated truck.
- 3:43Freight to the Gulf runs sixteen to eighteen dollars, which eats most of that
- 3:46premium.
- 3:48The Uinta Basin Railway cleared the Supreme Court on its environmental review,
- 3:51but my notes say it's still in Surface Transportation Board remand and Forest
- 3:55Service right of way review.
- 3:57Financing hasn't closed and construction hasn't started.
- 4:00For your Uinta terminal, rail loading is still the only commercial outlet.
- 4:05On operators, SM Energy is integrating its XCL Resources stake,
- 4:10and everyone else is holding a steady pace.
- 4:13Bakken.
- 4:13Production is steady around one point one nine to one point two million barrels per
- 4:18day.
- 4:19Nothing from the Director's Cut this cycle.
- 4:21My notes say gas capture is well above ninety five percent against a ninety five
- 4:25point eight requirement.
- 4:26Those can't both be true, so I'm not leaning on that line.
- 4:30Dakota Access is reported running near full, which leaves little pipeline room.
- 4:35Clearbrook is trading a dollar fifty to two ten under Guernsey.
- 4:38The rail question is whether that gap covers rail freight.
- 4:41My notes put the freight penalty at ten to twelve dollars in one place and thirteen
- 4:45to fifteen in another, so run your own numbers before Monday.
- 4:49Operators reported nothing new.
- 4:52Powder River.
- 4:53Steady Niobrara and Turner drilling from Anschutz, Continental,
- 4:57Devon, EOG and Peak.
- 4:59On takeaway, my notes say Plains is buying Silver Creek's six hundred mile gathering
- 5:03system for five hundred eighty five million dollars.
- 5:06I couldn't trace that to a primary source, so hold it loosely.
- 5:09They also say Kinder Morgan's Double H is converting to N G L service,
- 5:13with the original target the first quarter of this year.
- 5:16I can't confirm where that stands, and it matters, because it would pull a Dore to
- 5:20Guernsey crude artery out of service.
- 5:22Now Guernsey, GERN-zee, the section that matters most.
- 5:27Light sweet is holding at eighty five cents over Cushing, unchanged,
- 5:30which matches where we were in the last episode.
- 5:33Against Clearbrook the premium is about two ten, and it widened over the week as
- 5:37Midwest turnarounds left barrels stuck in the Midwest while egress south of Guernsey
- 5:41stayed tight.
- 5:43Storage there is full of Bakken, Canadian and Powder River crude,
- 5:46and the outlet is the constraint.
- 5:49Desk notes say Pony Express is heavily apportioned, with scheduled barrels trading
- 5:53at a premium to tank crude.
- 5:55I can't tie that to a tariff filing.
- 5:57Capacity is also muddled, since R B N cited roughly four hundred thirty thousand
- 6:01barrels per day in 2025 and my notes carry two hundred thirty.
- 6:05The Tallgrass and Bridger joint tariff open season dates to February 2025,
- 6:10so nothing new there.
- 6:12Bridger's proposed five hundred fifty thousand barrel per day line from the border
- 6:16to Guernsey is a plan, not capacity.
- 6:19So the netback picture is this.
- 6:21A shipper can take proration on Pony Express and Platte, dump barrels at a discount
- 6:26into Clearbrook, or pay the rail penalty.
- 6:29With a wider Brent premium pulling Gulf barrels out and Midwest refiners down,
- 6:34the Rockies are getting squeezed.
- 6:36Watch Monday's apportionment notices first.
- 6:39That's the brief.
