Transcript
- 0:02A listener production.
- 0:04Welcome to the Motorsport Brief.
- 0:06It's Monday the 30th of October 2023.
- 0:09It's race week for the TCR World Tour.
- 0:11Under lights at Sydney Motorsport Park before heading to the mountain.
- 0:15And the Gold Coast round of supercars on the weekend just gone was epic.
- 0:20With Ford back in the winner's circle.
- 0:22The title race will go to the final event in Adelaide in a few weeks time.
- 0:28Hi, everybody.
- 0:28Greg Rust with you for this edition of the Rusty's Garage Motorsport Brief.
- 0:32Tomorrow morning, a new feature F drops with the Barguanas.
- 0:36Jason and Ben joining us for a roundtable.
- 0:39The three of us chatting ahead of a huge fortnight for TCR with the best in the world heading our way.
- 0:46There's great reflections on Jason's career.
- 0:49What Ben's plans are, having raced in Portugal and Spa this year in addition to his Aussie campaign.
- 0:56What they do away from the track with the family business.
- 0:58And will Jason be tempted to pull the helmet back on again at some stage?
- 1:03Don't forget the voice of MotoGP.
- 1:05Nick Harris is a recent feature addition on Rusty's Garage 2.
- 1:10He worked with Barry Sheen for many years, spent time in Formula One and has vivid memories of being there when Ayrton Senna tragically passed away.
- 1:18He's been there for a while.
- 1:19Plus what Eddie Lawson, Wayne Gardner, Jeremy Burgess and more were like to work with behind the scenes.
- 1:26Now, today I'm joined by someone we really should have had on the podcast for a feature episode.
- 1:32And I promise we will do that at some stage, maybe ahead of his move to Team 18 next season.
- 1:37He picked up...
- 1:38some of those prized Gold Coast trophies with two visits to the podium at the Boost Mobile GC500, including the winner's surfboard yesterday.
- 1:48Hello, David Reynolds.
- 1:49Congratulations.
- 1:50Hello, Rusty.
- 1:51Thanks, buddy.
- 1:52Yeah, awesome.
- 1:53Thanks so much for having me.
- 1:54A thrilling finish.
- 1:55How confident were you that you could manage that final period, the kind of seesaw of emotions, the safety car, the pressure from Brodie and so on?
- 2:05Honestly, not at all.
- 2:07I didn't believe at all.
- 2:08My car was really bad in the last stint.
- 2:10It was going wayward.
- 2:11My first two stints were brilliant.
- 2:13I was so happy with my car.
- 2:14If I knew if I had that car in the last stint, I could have won.
- 2:17But when I drove out of pit lane, did a couple of laps, I'm like, oh, this thing feels like shit.
- 2:22This is weird.
- 2:23The brakes started to go wayward.
- 2:26Yeah, it was all starting to fall apart for me.
- 2:29But luckily I hang on and I fought to the death and, yeah, we won.
- 2:36It's ridiculous.
- 2:38You could tell you were fighting to the death.
- 2:39And I've seen the post that you did for the team on socials overnight.
- 2:42So I sense that it means a lot.
- 2:45Bathurst 2017 arguably the pinnacle, right?
- 2:48But where does that one rank given that you had to fight for it, been a bit of a drought and so on?
- 2:53Yeah, it's probably in my top few, I think.
- 2:56That was definitely probably the hardest-fought race I've had to fight, I reckon, because Brody's car was much better than mine.
- 3:03Their engines are a little bit stronger than ours, so down the front straight he was coming at me really hard, and that was setting up his opportunity at Turn 4, and that was just making my life really difficult, the way he was trying to rub on my rear bar and unstable my car a bit.
- 3:19Yeah, it was a really, really hard-fought race, man.
- 3:21I'm so just relieved.
- 3:23It was like I haven't won in five years, right?
- 3:25So it's been a long time and honestly, it feels like my first win again.
- 3:29It's a bizarre feeling.
- 3:30Excellent.
- 3:31Young family.
- 3:33For your eldest son, right, did the win kind of sink in?
- 3:36Is he at an age now where he understands what dad's doing and what that means to him?
- 3:41What was his reaction?
- 3:42He's more interested in the Hot Wheels wagon that goes around in the halftime show.
- 3:47So, yeah, he's a funny character.
- 3:50No, he's come up to me and he said, Daddy win, Daddy win.
- 3:53And I think he half knows but not really, no.
- 3:57He's more interested in the Hot Wheels stuff and the fireworks that was going on last night and stuff.
- 4:02So, yeah, he's...
- 4:04He's just been a two-and-a-half-year-old being crazy.
- 4:06Love it.
- 4:07Bit of chat around about straight-lining the chicane on lap 71.
- 4:10You survived that.
- 4:11You know, given that kind of moment, now that the adrenaline has worn off, tell us how you feel about that tension.
- 4:17And then separately, David, another epic celebration by you on the podium.
- 4:22Yeah.
- 4:24Yeah, I'll talk about that in a sec.
- 4:27But yeah, the shortcut and the chicane.
- 4:29So obviously, you know, that race tends to lend itself to that sort of environment.
- 4:34Like you get a certain amount of allocated shortcuts or jumps, you're allowed to call them.
- 4:39And if you haven't got a bad sponsorship flag up until the last, you know, 10 laps, it's a free-for-all.
- 4:45So you've got to play it strategically.
- 4:48And for once, I did in my life, and I'm proud of that.
- 4:54But, yeah, the celebration was mad.
- 4:56I was like – because I thought, you know, what am I going to do?
- 4:59What am I going to do this time?
- 5:01And I feel like everything's been done.
- 5:03I didn't really have anything planned.
- 5:05And I was talking to Jess and I was talking to Jess after getting out of my car and I saw that fire extinguisher there and I'm like,
- 5:12That'll do.
- 5:13So I took it up there on the podium and Brian Ingersen is telling me, don't spray it, don't take it out there.
- 5:19And I'm just like, nah, I'm not listening to you.
- 5:22So I took it out there.
- 5:23But I honestly thought it was going to go completely different in my brain.
- 5:25I had this image of like it was going to be a CO2 canister and it was going to like spray this white like haze everywhere and I was going to come out like Harry Houdini and it was going to be all-time funny.
- 5:35And I went out there and pressed it and it just went, and I was like, oh, my God, that's disappointing.
- 5:40Yeah.
- 5:40But I tried to make a show of it.
- 5:43It was, yeah, it didn't go exactly how I thought it was going to go, but, you know, it was still funny nonetheless.
- 5:48Sprayed everyone out there and it was awesome.
- 5:51Never changed, my friend.
- 5:52I love the spontaneity.
- 5:53You've talked in other publications about the work by the Penrite Racing Team, the Grove crew this year, and that's kind of all year long, not just leading into GC with some of the changes for the car.
- 6:05It's really going in the right way, the right direction for them, isn't it?
- 6:10100% man, they're an awesome bunch of guys, awesome bunch of team, the engineering team's unreal, they're the hardest bunch of blokes I've ever worked with in my life, they work so, so long hours and
- 6:26This year has been a very odd year for everyone on the Ford side, on the Ford camp.
- 6:30We haven't had a car that's actually looked like it could win a race at any time.
- 6:34And as a driver and a team, you feel that way.
- 6:37Every race you turn up to, you've got high hopes.
- 6:39You're like, this could be our chance.
- 6:40And then you roll out, you make a really good car, and it's still miles off the pace.
- 6:46So this is the first time all year that we've felt like we've had a chance and we capitalised on it.
- 6:52And, yeah, it was a perfect...
- 6:54The weekend when you look at it, there's two super close finishes and either manufacturer could have won.
- 7:00So that's what we want in our sport.
- 7:02We want very hard-fought racing from both sides of the fence.
- 7:06You don't want to see one side dominate like it's been this year.
- 7:09It's been a very, very dismal year on the forward side.
- 7:12But it's all looking positive for us.
- 7:17Yeah, so regardless of, you know, if you think you got, you know, we really didn't have a chance this year of winning up until this weekend, but it doesn't matter.
- 7:24That doesn't change your mentality.
- 7:25You still put in the same amount of effort to win the race as you do to come 10th or 20th.
- 7:30It's ridiculous.
- 7:31It's a funny, funny sport.
- 7:33What difference did the parity adjustment make from the feel of it from, you know, the driver's perspective?
- 7:38Can you quantify that?
- 7:40Yeah, it just sort of shifted our aero balance a little bit.
- 7:43more rearward by a few percent, and that's the only thing that really sort of did I believe so far.
- 7:50You know, obviously it's only been one round and we'll probably have a few more data points the next round, but it's just moved that –
- 7:59that the balance shift of aerodynamics more rearward.
- 8:04So, you know, our cars have always been traditionally turning entry instability, which like it's really good for one lap, but it's terrible over 10, 20, 30 laps.
- 8:14So it's sort of just calm that feeling down of that entry instabilitiness we get and that's made our longevity of our tyre a lot better.
- 8:24So, you know, we can...
- 8:26We can attack the corner completely differently.
- 8:28We can race completely differently.
- 8:31And it's the first time all year that we've had a chance to win.
- 8:34David's chatting to us from the Gold Coast this morning.
- 8:36You might have heard some sirens there in the background just to allay any fears.
- 8:39That is not the fire brigade turning up.
- 8:41I was going to say, turning up to.
- 8:42They've come to finally take me away.
- 8:45Give you lessons on how to use a fire extinguisher.
- 8:49We've got a couple of questions a little later on from listeners to the pod for you, which I hope you don't mind, we'll throw at you.
- 8:56In that, Craig Harrop talks about the parity scenario.
- 8:59Do you feel like it is, based on your answer there before, it does feel like it's better, perhaps closer.
- 9:05He's asking, do you feel like you need engine enhancements or improvements still?
- 9:12Yeah, definitely.
- 9:12That was one of the highlight points, I suppose, from you could see really bad at Bathurst.
- 9:16The Camaro was very, very fast down the straight.
- 9:19And if you saw the race yesterday, Brody's car was a lot faster down the straight than mine.
- 9:24So, yeah, there's something definitely going on between the engine performances of the two cars.
- 9:34that's a whole other conversation.
- 9:35At least they got one part of the aspect right, which I think is the aero balance is similar between the two cars.
- 9:41We just need to work on the engine performance to make it completely, you know, everyone completely happy.
- 9:46Because they're the only two differences between, you know, every team in down pit lane.
- 9:51The only differences would be the engine and the aero package.
- 9:54And I think the aero package is pretty close now, and they just need to do a bit more work on the engine side.
- 10:00So Gold Coast and then the final event in Adelaide, and there are some similarities, you know, street circuits and so on.
- 10:06On paper, does it bode well for Adelaide based on the weekend you've just had?
- 10:10Yeah, it does a little bit.
- 10:12You know, there are sections that are similar.
- 10:14There are sections that are quite different though.
- 10:17Once we get there, we'll have to figure out... Well, we kind of half know what the differences will be, but we'll have the same concept, I suppose, going to that race as far as setup goes, and we'll see what tuning we need to do.
- 10:31It was really hard this weekend because we rolled out in practice one.
- 10:34I missed practice one entirely due to a steering fault, and practice two...
- 10:40We put something in the car that we couldn't undo for that session and it wasn't the best car to drive.
- 10:46So we kind of didn't really know what we had underneath our car until qualifying.
- 10:49So for the team to put on a performance like that, like Matt Payne was pretty much almost on pole.
- 10:55He was on the front row and for his first time there, huge performance from him.
- 10:59And then I finished third yesterday, sorry, on Saturday and won the race yesterday.
- 11:04So as a team performance, we were probably one of the strongest performing teams over the weekend.
- 11:08I'm glad you brought up Matt Payne's performance there a moment ago.
- 11:11He's a really good mate of Liam Lawson's, right, who joined us on the pod in Singapore.
- 11:16Liam rates Matt's talent really highly.
- 11:20So Bathurst, Gold Coast, as you've just talked about, it's given us a window into that talent.
- 11:25What have you kind of observed of him internally there at the team and his growth and so on?
- 11:31Yeah, he's a different character.
- 11:34He's a funny, funny kid, very funny kid.
- 11:39He is a very, very talented guy, very, very talented in the car.
- 11:43And he's dedicated – he's very, very dedicated to his job and he puts a lot of time and effort in behind the scenes.
- 11:50And, yeah, he's just very, very good.
- 11:54So after the performance on the shootout, I was like, shit, he hosed me.
- 11:59So I just –
- 12:01I had to stump up the next day and do a better job.
- 12:03So luckily I did.
- 12:05I had to, yeah.
- 12:08But, yeah, he's a very funny character.
- 12:09Like when you talk to him, you think, you know, there's not a lot going on upstairs, but he's always thinking of something funny.
- 12:14And, yeah, he's an awesome funny – he's a funny, funny dude.
- 12:17He said some of the funniest stuff all year.
- 12:19I'd love to say some of his one-liners, but I don't think I should.
- 12:23Probably not appropriate here.
- 12:25No, no, it's sort of appropriate, but I don't want to say anything.
- 12:27He's actually a really cool character.
- 12:30I've had one of the best years of my life hanging out with him, being my teammate with Gerald really well.
- 12:37Hopefully, he's taken a little bit of wisdom off me.
- 12:40I don't want to take any credit for his performance.
- 12:45He's done it all by himself.
- 12:46Can we get you to hang on there for us for just a moment?
- 12:49A quick break here on the Motorsport Brief.
- 12:51More with David Reynolds right after this.
- 12:57You're listening to the Rusty's Garage Shortcast.
- 13:00David Reynolds is with us after his epic podium celebrations at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.
- 13:06Let's get back to the conversation now.
- 13:10Hey, no wrong decisions in life, right?
- 13:11You always make the best call at the time with what you've got.
- 13:15Is a part of you wondering about leaving the Groves as you get set for new adventures next year at all?
- 13:20Mate, absolutely, yeah.
- 13:23They're an unbelievable bunch of guys and it's going to be sad to see myself leave, but that's the decision you make and you've got to stick by.
- 13:34We'll roll on next year and try and beat them.
- 13:38That's just the nature of the beast, nature of the game.
- 13:43But, yeah, there's many reasons to go into your decision of why you leave or why you stay.
- 13:48So, yeah, we'll see what happens next year.
- 13:52Will you surround yourself with some familiar faces there?
- 13:54I don't know where you can or can't talk about that.
- 13:56And what was kind of the clincher for you to go to Team 18?
- 13:59What attracted you to move?
- 14:02Like, you know, I'm getting a bit older, Rusty, and I'm trying to look for...
- 14:07I still think of you as young, David.
- 14:09Yeah, so do I, mate.
- 14:10I still, honestly, if you didn't know how old you were, how old would you feel, Greg?
- 14:17Well, I feel 21.
- 14:17How old would you feel?
- 14:18Mate, 100%.
- 14:19I feel 21, but my greys say otherwise, David.
- 14:23Yeah, honestly, I'm 38 years old, but I still feel like 21, maybe even younger.
- 14:29Like I don't see age as a barrier in this sport, but some people see it as a barrier for some unknown reason.
- 14:36You know, obviously the older you get, you're –
- 14:38You might have family or you might have other interests outside of motor racing.
- 14:42So it kind of detracts you from your core business or your core thinking, which is getting up every day and thinking about how I'm going to win this next race, where am I going to break in turn one, what are we doing there?
- 14:53There's all those constant thoughts going in your head.
- 14:54Once that starts to disappear from your brain, I think that's when you should hang up the boots.
- 15:01But for me, that hasn't left me.
- 15:02So I'm always thinking about motor racing and how I can –
- 15:06drive faster or where I can make up a 10th here or half a 10th there.
- 15:09So, you know, that never leaves me.
- 15:12Excellent.
- 15:13Yeah.
- 15:14But, like, why I left is, you know, I'm getting a bit older.
- 15:17I was after, like, a slightly longer-term deal and Charlie gave it to me.
- 15:23And, you know, yeah, that's the crux of it, really.
- 15:27Good on you.
- 15:27Some questions here from listeners of the pod have come in.
- 15:31We'll power through those to the finish.
- 15:33Firstly, one from Brett Burt-Pitfield.
- 15:36What does he predict his Queensland pot plant bill will be?
- 15:45Yeah, I don't know.
- 15:47I'm not really sure.
- 15:48Hopefully they might forget that I do any weird stuff on the podium, just say it's part of the show because I think it puts on a nice show for everyone.
- 15:57Everyone just gets up there, gets their trophy, thank you, and it all looks kind of bland and the same.
- 16:02So I always like to do something different, but it's only reserved for the winner.
- 16:07You've got to do something crazy if you're the winner.
- 16:09If you're the podium getter, you've got to respect the wishes of the winner.
- 16:14Yeah.
- 16:15Yeah, it was awesome.
- 16:17Awesome to get a – I need to actually start planning some better ones.
- 16:22Fast forward to 2024 and you're doing community service, doing plant work for Gold Coast Council.
- 16:27Yeah, true.
- 16:28Here's one from Gordon Anderson.
- 16:29On a scale of one to SVG, what ranking would you give your burnout at the end?
- 16:34One.
- 16:34It was terrible.
- 16:36Really?
- 16:36Yeah, I did one.
- 16:38I did two of them and I was kind of just –
- 16:42I don't know.
- 16:42It's been a long time since I've done a burnout.
- 16:44I haven't done one since the last one, which is – no, I didn't even do one five years ago.
- 16:49The last time I did a burnout was probably 10 years ago, so I need a bit of practice.
- 16:54It was pretty bad though.
- 16:55I did a good one down the back straight.
- 16:57I did a terrible one at turn four, so I kind of got facing the fence the wrong way and I couldn't get reverse and it was looking like Austin Powers out there.
- 17:07So, yeah, it was pretty silly.
- 17:10So one from Gordon, again, who asks, what does fire extinguisher foam taste like?
- 17:15Kids, please don't try that at home naturally.
- 17:18No, I didn't taste it.
- 17:19Honestly, I didn't taste it at all.
- 17:21I think water's got some in his ear and he was pretty pissed off at me about that.
- 17:24I said, sorry, but...
- 17:26He was a good sport about it.
- 17:28Okay.
- 17:29Anne Mitchell, love you.
- 17:30Never change.
- 17:31That's great.
- 17:32Jim Hart.
- 17:33Thank you.
- 17:34Are you a volunteer firefighter on weekdays?
- 17:38Am I?
- 17:38No, I'm not.
- 17:39Tani's dad, he's a proper Ritchie Didge fireman.
- 17:44So, yeah, I've been to the fire station in Darwin a few times and shown Rye the big fire truck and everything like that.
- 17:52So, yeah, but it was honestly just spur of the moment.
- 17:54I just...
- 17:55It was the only thing I could get my hands on that was mobile enough for me to steal and take up to the podium.
- 18:01And I love how your brain works zeroing in on something and like, that's it.
- 18:05That's me.
- 18:05That's what I'm going to take to the end.
- 18:07Yeah, I'm done.
- 18:09I wish it was a CO2 one.
- 18:11It would have looked like heaps better.
- 18:12Yeah.
- 18:14Oh, well.
- 18:15I'll save it for the next one.
- 18:16Gareth George.
- 18:17I love his podcast.
- 18:19Surely now that he's won a race, it will make a comeback.
- 18:22I actually, and now I actually, on this subject, I asked Michael Caruso recently about this in his pod too.
- 18:28Yeah, I'll listen to that.
- 18:29There's a bit of a passion project for the peer review.
- 18:31He used to take your little audio kit on the road with you.
- 18:35The journalist Andrew Van Leeuwen's doing other things now with Speed Cafe.
- 18:38Will you and Michael reignite that at some stage?
- 18:41That's Gareth's question, I guess.
- 18:44There's always a chance of a possibility.
- 18:46I love doing it.
- 18:47That was heaps of fun.
- 18:48Got me in trouble a lot, and that's what I like to be.
- 18:52I like to have a bit of trouble in my life.
- 18:54But, yeah, it's really up to Michael.
- 18:56Got to talk to him about it.
- 18:58Okay, okay.
- 19:00There's a lot of work that goes into podcasts, isn't there?
- 19:01There is.
- 19:02There is.
- 19:02A lot of behind the scenes of work.
- 19:03Scenes.
- 19:04Yep, yep.
- 19:05He did most of it, so I can't take any credit for that.
- 19:08I just turned up and opened my mouth and some words came out.
- 19:12Can't we just hit record and that's it?
- 19:13Yes.
- 19:14Yeah, that's all it was.
- 19:16It was a very, very simple format, but Michael was always about the plan and these things, and we had a run sheet, but I didn't need to read it, not at all.
- 19:25It was just off the cuff.
- 19:27Look at you two, yin and yang.
- 19:30Darren Roustan, an update on the RX7 Series 1 resto, please.
- 19:35That's a good question from Darren because now you've got a little bit of extra cash in the sky rocket from the weekend.
- 19:40How's that project going, David?
- 19:42Yeah, it's going along well.
- 19:43I'm waiting for a diff centre to turn up and once my wheels and tyres are done, I think she'll be on the road very, very shortly.
- 19:49I can't wait for it.
- 19:50It's been 16, 17 years since I drove it last.
- 19:54It's almost as long as my last win.
- 19:56Well, it wasn't because you changed that yesterday.
- 19:59We look forward to perhaps a bit more of that before you wrap up your chapter with Penrite Racing.
- 20:05Thank you for coming on today, mate, and for sharing a bit of that moment, that weekend for you, and for taking some listener questions as well.
- 20:13And we wish you all the very best in Adelaide in a few weeks' time.
- 20:17Thanks, Greg.
- 20:18Love you, mate.
- 20:18Love you, brother.
- 20:19You're the best.
- 20:20Just a reminder to the finale for supercars on the streets of Adelaide, November 23 to 26.
- 20:26A couple of other pieces of news before we go today.
- 20:29Was that the final straw for Sergio Perez at Red Bull after he crashed out of his home race at the first corner in this morning's F1 round in Mexico?
- 20:38Under pressure after a form slump this season, he made a lightning start and was challenging for the lead with pole sitter Charles Leclerc and Sergio's teammate Max Verstappen
- 20:50to turn one, Max on the inside, Sergio on the outside, wasn't quite far enough in front of Leclerc and the contact launched the Red Bull, leaving it with plenty of damage, particularly to the floor.
- 21:02Now, Sergio made it back to the lane, but that's as far as it went.
- 21:06Max Verstappen won, it's his 16th win of the season, staggering.
- 21:11Lewis Hamilton second, Leclerc third, Daniel Ricciardo seventh and Oscar Piastri home in eighth.
- 21:18Congratulations to Aaron Borg, who wrapped up the 2023 Super Utes title at Surface Paradise.
- 21:24We had his Cedars Racing stablemate, Dave Casey, on the pod recently.
- 21:28Fun chat, that one, with Mudflap 2, as they call him.
- 21:31You can find that in our Rusty's Garage library.
- 21:34Gold Coast local Bailey Hall has made it seven different winners from seven rounds so far in the Porsche Carrera Cup.
- 21:41He broke through for his first race win there too.
- 21:44So the Kiwi Callum Hedge, who has been...
- 21:47leading that championship, but juggling a single-seater series in the United States as well with this Porsche program.
- 21:54Trails Jackson Walls by 21 going into the final round there in South Australia.
- 22:00Jorge Martin did everything he could for his MotoGP title fight at the Buriram circuit in Thailand, winning the sprint and the GP, which was just as exciting, if not more so, than that Saturday race we enjoyed in Australia.
- 22:15The South African Brad Binder
- 22:17who brought his KTM home second, was penalised post-race for exceeding track limits, which promoted Ducati's reigning world champion, Peko Bagnaia, to second.
- 22:27So Peko leads Martine by just 13 points on the ladder now.
- 22:32The fight looks like going right to the wire at the final event in Spain.
- 22:37The next stop on the tour is Sepang in Malaysia, November 10-12.
- 22:43That is it for this edition of The Brief.
- 22:44Keep an eye out for notifications on the brand new feature episode with the Barguanas, which drops tomorrow morning with Jason and Ben there ahead of Race Sydney, the first of two stops on the Aussie leg of the TCR World Tour this weekend.
- 22:59We'll catch you next time, everybody.
- 23:00Bye for now.
