- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:14It's a Tuesday. It's the 20th of May.
- 0:16And I hope you're going well because today, today we are
- 0:20going to, as promised last week, we're going to unpack a little
- 0:23bit about this priest, this king, this man by the name of
- 0:28Melchizedek, who we touched on last week.
- 0:31But as we will discover a lot more next week, the author of
- 0:35Hebrews is so good at explaining really complicated things in a
- 0:41simple, comprehensive and easy to understand way.
- 0:44And so today he's going to do that as he compares Jesus to
- 0:47this high priest mentioned all those chapters ago back in
- 0:52Genesis with Abraham. So friends, get yourselves
- 0:55comfy. Let us listen.
- 0:57Let us go back and hear what it is that God has to share with us
- 1:02about who Jesus is in our life as we read together Hebrews
- 1:07Chapter 7. This Melchizedek was king of the
- 1:20city of Salem and also a priest of God Most High.
- 1:25When Abraham was returning home after winning a great battle
- 1:28against the kings, Melchizedek met him and blessed him.
- 1:33Then Abraham took a tenth of all he had captured in battle and
- 1:36gave it to Melchizedek. The name Melchizedek means King
- 1:41of justice, and King of Salem means King of peace.
- 1:46There is no record of his father or mother or any of his
- 1:49ancestors, no beginning or end to his life.
- 1:53He remains a priest forever resembling the Son of God.
- 1:58Consider, then, how great this Melchizedek was.
- 2:02Even Abraham, the great patriarch of Israel, recognised
- 2:07this by giving him a 10th of what he had taken in battle.
- 2:11Now the Law of Moses required that the priests who are
- 2:14descendants of Levi must collect a tithe from the rest of the
- 2:17people of Israel, who are also descendants of Abraham.
- 2:22But Melchizedek, who was not a descendant of Levi, collected
- 2:261/10 from Abraham, and Melchizedek placed a blessing
- 2:31upon Abraham, the one who had already received the promise of
- 2:35God. And without question, the person
- 2:38who has the power to give a blessing is greater than the one
- 2:42who is blessed. The priests who collect tithes
- 2:47are men who die. So Melchizedek is greater than
- 2:50they are because we are told that he lives on.
- 2:54In addition, we might even say that these Levites, the ones who
- 2:59collect the tithe, paid a tithe to Melchizedek when their
- 3:03ancestor Abraham paid a tithe to him.
- 3:07For although Levi wasn't born yet, the seed from which he came
- 3:12was in Abraham's body when Melchizedek collected the tithe
- 3:15from him. So if the priesthood of Levi, on
- 3:19which the law was based, could have achieved the perfection God
- 3:23intended, why did God need to establish a different priesthood
- 3:27with a priest in the order of Melchizedek instead of the order
- 3:31of Levi and Aaron? And if the priesthood is
- 3:34changed, the law must also be changed to permit it, For the
- 3:39priest we are talking about belongs to a different tribe
- 3:42whose members have never served at the altar as priests.
- 3:46What I mean is, our Lord came from the tribe of Judah, and
- 3:51Moses never mentioned priests coming from that tribe.
- 3:55This change has been made very clear since a different priest
- 3:59who is like Melchizedek has appeared.
- 4:03Jesus became a priest not by meeting the physical
- 4:06requirements of belonging to the tribe of Levi, but by the power
- 4:10of a life that cannot be destroyed.
- 4:13And the psalmist pointed this out when he prophesied.
- 4:17You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.
- 4:22Yes. The old requirement about the
- 4:24priesthood was set aside because it was weak and useless, for the
- 4:29law never made anything perfect. But now we have confidence in a
- 4:33better hope through which we draw near to God.
- 4:38This new system was established with a solemn oath.
- 4:41Aaron's descendants became priests without such an oath.
- 4:45But there was an oath regarding Jesus.
- 4:48For God said to him, The Lord has taken an oath and will not
- 4:53break his vow. You are a priest forever because
- 4:58of this oath. Jesus is the one who guarantees
- 5:02this better covenant with God. There were many priests under
- 5:07the old system, for death prevented them from remaining in
- 5:11office. But because Jesus lives forever,
- 5:14his priesthood lasts forever. Therefore, he is able once and
- 5:19forever to save those who come to God through him.
- 5:24He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.
- 5:28He is the kind of High priest we need because he is holy and
- 5:32blameless. Unstained by sin, He has been
- 5:36set apart from sinners and has been given the highest place of
- 5:40honour in heaven. Unlike those other high priests,
- 5:44He does not need to offer sacrifices every day.
- 5:47They did this for their own sins 1st and then for the sins of the
- 5:51people. But Jesus did this once for all
- 5:56when He offered himself as the sacrifice for the people's sins.
- 6:00The Law appointed high priests who were limited by human
- 6:03weakness. But after the Law was given, God
- 6:07appointed his Son with an oath, and his Son has been made the
- 6:12perfect High Priest forever. Jesus, you bring a new way of
- 6:27being. You bring a new way of
- 6:29understanding all the things that we thought we understood.
- 6:33They get toppled over and put on their heads and there you are,
- 6:39making all things new, bringing us blameless before the Father.
- 6:47And the status quo continues, continues somehow to draw us
- 6:52back, thinking that we need to follow a set of rules, reach a
- 6:56certain criteria of behaviour in order to be acceptable to you.
- 7:02When Jesus, you make a different way forward.
- 7:06It's through your sacrifice that you have taken care of all of
- 7:10that. And yes, you call us to live a
- 7:13different way, but ultimately, Lord, you have saved us through
- 7:17your actions and your grace. Help us continually rest in that
- 7:23truth, wrap our head around that truth, and not be drawn into a
- 7:28calmer style understanding of the world where we need to earn
- 7:33your favour through what we do. Oh, we love you and we're so
- 7:37grateful for your grace for us. And we pray all of this through
- 7:40your name, Jesus, Amen.
