- 0:05Speaker 1: This is Kevin's Sports Ferrite Daily, bringing you the Folkston
- 0:08Speaker 1: a high sports show right here on one oh five
- 0:10Speaker 1: point nine Radio Folkston. Now, I've been on my travels
- 0:25Speaker 1: which took me to Hastings with Missus Ferret, Sue Elkins
- 0:27Speaker 1: and her three grandchildren, and then we went off to Clacton,
- 0:31Speaker 1: just me and Missus Ferret. Actually we left the grandkids
- 0:33Speaker 1: in Folkston after a lovely time, I might add, but
- 0:37Speaker 1: I went down there for the weekend where I compared
- 0:40Speaker 1: the Carnival Half Marathon and ten K. So I've been
- 0:43Speaker 1: away a bit from a local sport of a few
- 0:45Speaker 1: bits to tell you about.
- 0:46Speaker 2: On today's show.
- 0:56Speaker 1: We've got some cricket news, running stories, Hockey up Day
- 1:00Speaker 1: and a bit of football and a few celebrity birthdays
- 1:03Speaker 1: I've picked up on. So so let's start the show
- 1:06Speaker 1: with a suitable weather related song. Now it looks like
- 1:10Speaker 1: the very hot weather has gone, doesn't it, And it
- 1:14Speaker 1: looks like well we are due for some rain, let's
- 1:17Speaker 1: face it, and if everybody needs it, the garden, the farmers,
- 1:21Speaker 1: absolutely everybody. So sit back and enjoy this track from
- 1:24Speaker 1: Annie Lennox and the Eurythmics. Here comes the rain. Again
- 1:59Speaker 1: and let and yourhythmix. There here comes the rain again.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Well we have been lucky, haven't we. There's two ways
- 2:05Speaker 1: of looking at it, really. I mean, we do need the.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Rain, this for sure.
- 2:08Speaker 1: But looking back on a personal note, and we came
- 2:11Speaker 1: back from Cyprus to the end of May, we left
- 2:14Speaker 1: the hot weather and normally we come back to grizzly,
- 2:17Speaker 1: old English weather. But it's been lovely ever since, and
- 2:21Speaker 1: it's just been brilliant. I can't remember the last time, well,
- 2:24Speaker 1: let me think seventy six was it the hot summer.
- 2:28Speaker 1: But I was kind of hoping that the hot weather
- 2:30Speaker 1: would stay like it until the end of the school
- 2:33Speaker 1: holidays at least, and so that the families that have
- 2:36Speaker 1: been looking forward to a break all year round can
- 2:38Speaker 1: get away and enjoy themselves. But it might just break
- 2:41Speaker 1: a little bit. Next week looked a bit stormy. I
- 2:43Speaker 1: think we're all right for the weekend. But the English
- 2:46Speaker 1: people love nothing more than talking about the weather, didn't they.
- 2:51Speaker 1: You know, if you bump into someone that you haven't
- 2:53Speaker 1: seen for a while, Oh it's a really nice day in.
- 2:55Speaker 2: It, or it's cold. You know, typical US English, isn't
- 2:58Speaker 2: it so?
- 3:00Speaker 1: But one sport that has benefited from the weather though
- 3:02Speaker 1: it's probably been really really hot out there on a
- 3:05Speaker 1: Saturday is cricket, so we're going to do some cricket
- 3:08Speaker 1: news now. Folkston first eleven. We'll start with them now.
- 3:13Speaker 1: They lost away at Canterbury by one hundred and forty
- 3:15Speaker 1: eight runs. Canterbury won the toss and decided to bat
- 3:19Speaker 1: two batsmen, Billy Amouche and Isaac Dilkes, causing all the damage,
- 3:24Speaker 1: scoring one hundred and seven runs each, yes each. Their
- 3:28Speaker 1: final score was three hundred and twenty for eight. Folks
- 3:31Speaker 1: are managing just one hundred and seventy two, so not
- 3:34Speaker 1: a good day for Folkston. This week gets a home
- 3:37Speaker 1: game against the Bickley Park who come from Bromley. Hawkins
- 3:41Speaker 1: were put into bat by Sherwood Cricket Club and scored
- 3:44Speaker 1: two hundred and one for six. They then dismissed Sherwood
- 3:48Speaker 1: for one hundred and sixty two, so Hawkins won a
- 3:50Speaker 1: game by thirty nine runs. And Saturday sees and away
- 3:54Speaker 1: trip to at Westgate on Sea. I've traveled to Faversham.
- 3:59Speaker 1: They batted first, made one hundred and fifty three all out.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Faversham scored one hundred and fifty seven for just seven
- 4:04Speaker 1: wickets and won the game by three wickets. On Saturday
- 4:08Speaker 1: High they're away once more as they visit Saint Margaret's Cosmopolitan.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Hide Green won the toss and put Warmer Green.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Into bat, who scored a respectable two hundred and fifty
- 4:19Speaker 1: one for eight. However, hide Green had a good day
- 4:22Speaker 1: with the bats, scoring two hundred and fifty four for six,
- 4:25Speaker 1: winning the game by four wickets.
- 4:27Speaker 2: This week they're at.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Home to tend and Second eleven, who last week beat
- 4:31Speaker 1: Saltword by two wickets. Saltward batted first, scoring one hundred
- 4:35Speaker 1: and seventy one all out, but Tended and made one
- 4:37Speaker 1: hundred and seventy two for eight, so winning the game.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Saltwhid's next fixture is away at north Down. Sipton Park
- 4:46Speaker 1: batted for first away at Walmer, making two hundred and
- 4:49Speaker 1: twenty five for nine. Walmer then stepped up scoring two
- 4:52Speaker 1: hundred and twenty six for three and won the game
- 4:55Speaker 1: by seven wickets. Saturday, they're on the road again, this
- 4:58Speaker 1: time visiting Elyn Cricket Club, which is near Maystone.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Now.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Last week our six teams well it was two wins
- 5:06Speaker 1: and four defeats, so let's hope for a bit better
- 5:08Speaker 1: on Saturday. The weather for the weekend is looking sunny
- 5:12Speaker 1: with a gentle breeze, but there's a big a few
- 5:15Speaker 1: clouds looming for next week, so we might get that rain.
- 5:19Speaker 2: It's got to come at some point, isn't it.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Now Keep an eye on social media and things that's
- 5:25Speaker 1: going on in the music world.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I've come across a lady that is actually six. She
- 5:30Speaker 2: was sixty eight.
- 5:31Speaker 1: This week, and that was Madonna. Now Madonna, she's the
- 5:35Speaker 1: best selling female music artist of all time. And you
- 5:39Speaker 1: know Madonna is I always thought it was a stage name,
- 5:42Speaker 1: but her actual name is Madonna Luis Chicono, so they go,
- 5:46Speaker 1: so you don't have to change your name.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Now I'm going to play a song for her.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Birthday, and this goes back to nineteen eighty six. She
- 5:54Speaker 1: really sort of hit the headlines around about the nineteen eighties,
- 5:56Speaker 1: didn't she. And some of her early stuff was really good.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I really loved it. And this is one of my favorites.
- 6:02Speaker 1: This is a Papa don't Preach Madonna from nineteen eighty six,
- 6:34Speaker 1: Papa don't preach. So happy birthday to you, Madonna. She
- 6:39Speaker 1: was sixty eight last week right, so well locally, I
- 6:43Speaker 1: mean i haven't been around much just lately. I've spent
- 6:45Speaker 1: a week in Hastings with Sue and her grandkids. But
- 6:48Speaker 1: I've had the busy weekends, you see, I've had two
- 6:51Speaker 1: busy Sundays. On the ninth of August, I was on
- 6:54Speaker 1: the MIC at the Mount Ephram ten k where three
- 6:58Speaker 1: hundred runners took part. Now Mount Ephram, it was a
- 7:01Speaker 1: hot It was a hot day and the course was hilly,
- 7:04Speaker 1: you know, two things that make it really tough for runners,
- 7:06Speaker 1: but everybody seemed to enjoy it. Oliver Reagan from Thanic
- 7:10Speaker 1: Road Runners was first across the line in the time
- 7:13Speaker 1: of thirty seven minutes forty eight seconds, and first female
- 7:17Speaker 1: was Ruby Jones, also from the Thane Club, in forty
- 7:20Speaker 1: minutes and five seconds. Local runners James Barney ran forty
- 7:25Speaker 1: two two, Katrina Peak ran one hour and ten minutes
- 7:29Speaker 1: and Dean Patterson one hour seventeen minutes. They were all
- 7:32Speaker 1: from the Folkston Club, John Clayson from South Kent Harriers
- 7:36Speaker 1: he ran fifty three fifty eight and Rona Fry from
- 7:39Speaker 1: the Folkston Optimist Hockey Club. She run one hour and
- 7:43Speaker 1: six minutes and it was really nice to see. Rona
- 7:46Speaker 1: and Katrina haven't seen him for a while and they're
- 7:50Speaker 1: getting ready for the Great North Run. And now they've
- 7:54Speaker 1: done it before so they know what it's like. And
- 7:58Speaker 1: all I've never been up there indicates they've never watched
- 8:02Speaker 1: it at all. But I do remember my partner Sue
- 8:05Speaker 1: ran it one year and it poured down for the
- 8:08Speaker 1: whole race and the people were offering her water and
- 8:13Speaker 1: her friend Pam, and all they wanted was a nice
- 8:15Speaker 1: cup of hot chocolate or soup to.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Warm them up.
- 8:19Speaker 1: So I hope the weather's nice for you, Rona and
- 8:21Speaker 1: Katrina when you do your Great North Run. And I'm
- 8:23Speaker 1: sure we'd be talking about that a bit more before
- 8:25Speaker 1: you go. Now back to Mount Ephram. The start and
- 8:28Speaker 1: finish were in the lovely grounds of the Mount Ephram
- 8:31Speaker 1: and at the end of the race the run, because
- 8:33Speaker 1: it was so hot, the runners were just looking for
- 8:35Speaker 1: shade underneath the trees. The nice race team put on
- 8:39Speaker 1: a great show. We've run director Meil Powell at the Helm.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Then the following Sunday I was at the Clacton Half
- 8:45Speaker 1: Marathon ten k race, which was just last weekend, and
- 8:49Speaker 1: this was organized by the Clacton Carnival Committee in partnership
- 8:52Speaker 1: with the Nice Work Event team. Now, the start finished
- 8:56Speaker 1: to this one was it's kind of very similar to
- 8:58Speaker 1: Folks for the Folks Half Marathon.
- 9:01Speaker 2: If you like.
- 9:01Speaker 1: It was sat on a cliff top promenade and very
- 9:05Speaker 1: similar to the Lees as it dropped down onto a
- 9:08Speaker 1: lower promenade than it hugged the coastline. With near total
- 9:12Speaker 1: of nearly eight hundred runners and there was a fun
- 9:16Speaker 1: run which was at about fifty or so and that
- 9:19Speaker 1: the atmosphere is absolutely brilliant, you know, Rachel, she got
- 9:24Speaker 1: everybody motivated, got the kids wound up and the parents
- 9:27Speaker 1: wound up as well. And Amaisu was the tail walker runner,
- 9:33Speaker 1: but she was I can't remember his name, but she
- 9:35Speaker 1: was running with a little lad he was only about
- 9:37Speaker 1: five and his dad, and she was telling me he
- 9:40Speaker 1: was a real character. He was cheering everybody on and
- 9:44Speaker 1: he saved a little sprint for the last few yards
- 9:46Speaker 1: across the line and he got a massive cheer. All
- 9:51Speaker 1: in all, it was a really busy day well as
- 9:53Speaker 1: you can imagine. It attracted mainly runners from Essex clubs,
- 9:57Speaker 1: some coming down from It's Witch Harrich Felix Dowe and
- 10:01Speaker 1: whilst not expecting any runners from our area, I saw
- 10:05Speaker 1: a couple of very distinctive red, white and blue vests
- 10:08Speaker 1: from the folks running an athletics club. Now I didn't
- 10:12Speaker 1: get a chance to talk to them as I was
- 10:13Speaker 1: so busy, but my partner Sue, grabbed a few words
- 10:16Speaker 1: with Matthew and Helen Webb, who both run the ten k,
- 10:20Speaker 1: Matthew finishing in forty nine minutes exactly and Helen forty
- 10:24Speaker 1: six fifty four. Apparently they were touring round in their
- 10:27Speaker 1: campervan and decided to aim for Clacton and the ten k. Now,
- 10:32Speaker 1: this is a busy, buzzy race and the Essex crowd.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Really are great fun.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I mean it was a little bit scary because we
- 10:39Speaker 1: had an air ambulance helicopter land just a few hundred
- 10:43Speaker 1: yards from the start, but I'm pleased to say it
- 10:45Speaker 1: wasn't for any of the runners. It was to attend
- 10:48Speaker 1: a casualty close by. Now the event must have attracted
- 10:52Speaker 1: along with spectators.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Oh, I don't know, two thousand people.
- 10:55Speaker 1: It was the final day of the Clacton Carnival week,
- 10:58Speaker 1: so once again the nice A team presented an excellent
- 11:01Speaker 1: race with the boss, Rachel Wood in charge. So well
- 11:04Speaker 1: done to everybody that went along to that. Spectators, runners
- 11:08Speaker 1: and who cools the team, you know, the team of
- 11:11Speaker 1: nice work. They consist of very important, dedicated people. There's registration,
- 11:17Speaker 1: there's t shirts to hand out, there's the timing team
- 11:20Speaker 1: of Cavan and photographer Andrew and they've got to put
- 11:24Speaker 1: the course out the day before, which is really hard work.
- 11:27Speaker 1: And then Catherine, she went round and picked up she
- 11:32Speaker 1: looked like a newspaper boy with a big sack there
- 11:35Speaker 1: and picking up the signs afterwards. So it really was
- 11:38Speaker 1: a great team weekend. Okay, so time for another song.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Now we've got another celebrity birthday. And now this is
- 11:45Speaker 1: for a gentleman who was seventy seven last week. Now
- 11:48Speaker 1: you might have heard of him, is mister Martin Knoffler.
- 11:52Speaker 1: And it is the first single they ever brought out
- 11:55Speaker 1: was Sultan's of Swing and it was a new concept
- 11:58Speaker 1: at the time. It was a really diferent sound. But
- 12:01Speaker 1: I've chosen for this one, which is most people know
- 12:03Speaker 1: this one. This is Money for Nothing distrates Money for
- 12:40Speaker 1: Nothing nineteen eighty five and no One always reminds me
- 12:44Speaker 1: of like when MTV came out, you know, and they
- 12:46Speaker 1: had the song for this one was about cartoon characters,
- 12:50Speaker 1: and I used to think, what are they doing singing
- 12:54Speaker 1: about microwave ovens in a pop songmer I couldn't quite
- 12:57Speaker 1: work it out, but it obviously paid often, right, So
- 13:01Speaker 1: we've got time for a bit of hockey news now, yes,
- 13:06Speaker 1: now the folks and Optimist Hockey Club. Well, I don't know,
- 13:09Speaker 1: there's just something about it down there. Never seems to sleep,
- 13:11Speaker 1: is it. It's not long until the season starts. It's
- 13:14Speaker 1: the nineteenth September for the men's first eleven, whose first
- 13:18Speaker 1: game is a way to Eastbourne, and the Ladies First
- 13:20Speaker 1: eleven on the same day they travel away to play
- 13:23Speaker 1: Malden Russets. Now they are both in their respective Premier
- 13:27Speaker 1: Divisions the five Memories correct without looking it up. The
- 13:31Speaker 1: Ladies came up last year and the men held on
- 13:34Speaker 1: by the skin of their teeth right to the last
- 13:37Speaker 1: game of the season to stay in that Premiere. So
- 13:40Speaker 1: I'm sure they've learned a lot of the men and
- 13:42Speaker 1: looking forward to another competitive season now. At this stage
- 13:47Speaker 1: I haven't checked the other fixtures, as last season the
- 13:51Speaker 1: Opts managed to field thirteen teams so I'll wait till
- 13:55Speaker 1: radio Guru Amy has puts out a full list. I
- 14:00Speaker 1: mean she might find another couple of teams tucked away
- 14:03Speaker 1: somewhere that is so popular that sport.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Now during the close.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Season, there's been a Friday evening mixed hockey league, which
- 14:10Speaker 1: is really popular. And when I say mixed hockey, it's
- 14:13Speaker 1: one of the sports where men and women are in
- 14:15Speaker 1: the same team and they play against men and women
- 14:18Speaker 1: and it's.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Really really popular.
- 14:20Speaker 1: But one thing I do want to do is I
- 14:22Speaker 1: want to read out a role of honor to players
- 14:24Speaker 1: who took part and listen to this. In the twenty
- 14:27Speaker 1: twenty six World Masters Hockey World Cup in Holland. Now
- 14:34Speaker 1: you can play Masters hockey when you're over thirty five
- 14:37Speaker 1: and it rises in five year increments right up to
- 14:40Speaker 1: over eighty and we have got our own. Brian Murrawll
- 14:43Speaker 1: plays in the over eighties. Is a very shy private man.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Can't get him in for the life of me, but
- 14:49Speaker 1: I always find out if he's playing for England, and
- 14:52Speaker 1: somehow Amy always tells me. So I'll just keep going, Brian.
- 14:58Speaker 1: So congratulations go to the following. Becka Smith represented England
- 15:02Speaker 1: in the over thirty five category and she won a
- 15:05Speaker 1: gold medal. Oh wow, what an achievement that is. Former
- 15:09Speaker 1: guest of the show Amy Bumstead represented Wales in the
- 15:12Speaker 1: over forties. She made her debuting goal there she came
- 15:15Speaker 1: in sixth place. Claire Carter represented the Alliance over thirty
- 15:20Speaker 1: fives and won a bronze medal. Now the Alliance, by
- 15:23Speaker 1: the way, is like a multinational club which was created
- 15:26Speaker 1: to unite hockey players from various countries who might not
- 15:29Speaker 1: otherwise have a full national side to join. Nick Hopkin
- 15:34Speaker 1: he was playing for the England over fifties and guess
- 15:37Speaker 1: what he got a gold medal as well, So two
- 15:39Speaker 1: gold medals. Steph Mill and she represented Scotland and over
- 15:43Speaker 1: thirty fives and she got an eighth place. So you
- 15:47Speaker 1: can see, I don't know, you can just see what
- 15:48Speaker 1: the strength and depth of the eliza within the club,
- 15:51Speaker 1: you know, and what credit these players are to the
- 15:54Speaker 1: club themselves, the game and of course the area. You know,
- 15:57Speaker 1: it makes everybody in folks them, you know, just a
- 16:00Speaker 1: little spring in their step when they go down to
- 16:03Speaker 1: the hockey club. So there'd be more hockey news as
- 16:05Speaker 1: and when it excuse me, as and when it comes
- 16:08Speaker 1: and as we head off to the start of the
- 16:10Speaker 1: season next month, and that means I will be trying
- 16:13Speaker 1: to get Amy or a representative from the hockey club
- 16:16Speaker 1: in here for a chat. Now we've got one more
- 16:20Speaker 1: birthday to celebrate, which is next week.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Actually.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Now it's a lady called Shania Twain now will be
- 16:28Speaker 1: sixty next week. She's Canadian and she's the best selling
- 16:32Speaker 1: female artist in country music history, selling more than one
- 16:36Speaker 1: hundred million records. Now she is very popular, not so
- 16:41Speaker 1: popular over here. I think this song will represent her
- 16:44Speaker 1: biggest hit over here, but she's obviously got a massive,
- 16:47Speaker 1: massive following out there in Canada. So sit back and
- 16:50Speaker 1: enjoy this one, Shania Twain. That don't imprison me in much?
- 17:13Speaker 1: All right, all right, Tony Twain, And happy birthday to you,
- 17:23Speaker 1: shanaia a sixty next week. And come along?
- 17:26Speaker 2: Was you singing along to that one? I bet you was.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I mean, I'm in the studio all by myself and
- 17:32Speaker 1: I was singing along. It's just one of those sing
- 17:33Speaker 1: along songs, isn't it. It don't impress on me.
- 17:36Speaker 2: We all know it, don't. We have great stuff? Okay?
- 17:39Speaker 1: Well that was nineteen ninety eight. And we're going to
- 17:41Speaker 1: move straight on to two thousand and six with Keen
- 17:43Speaker 1: Is it anyone that patay a little song there from Clean?
- 18:06Speaker 2: Is it any one? Though?
- 18:07Speaker 1: Two thousand and six that's finished right time for some
- 18:14Speaker 1: sport now some football in fact, now the main Premier
- 18:17Speaker 1: League kicks off tomorrow night with just one game Arsenal
- 18:21Speaker 1: versus Coventry, then a full program on Saturday. Now this
- 18:25Speaker 1: first game looks I was going to be a baptism
- 18:27Speaker 1: of fire for Coventry as champions of last season. Arsenal
- 18:31Speaker 1: play at home to last year's championship champions Coventry under
- 18:35Speaker 1: the guidance of Frank Lampard, so no doubt we will
- 18:39Speaker 1: chat more about that on Saturday Sports show with myself
- 18:42Speaker 1: and ad Meanwhile, closer to home, folks and in Victor
- 18:45Speaker 1: have got off two words solid start. I can't grumble
- 18:48Speaker 1: really their first game they beat Walton and Hersham five
- 18:51Speaker 1: to one, and on Tuesday evening they drew one all
- 18:54Speaker 1: with Maidstone United in what sounded like a really exciting
- 18:58Speaker 1: local Kent derby. I was listening to it on the
- 19:01Speaker 1: Seasiders Radio with Adrian and co precenter Charlie, who Charlie
- 19:05Speaker 1: has been on the show here as well, and if
- 19:07Speaker 1: it sounded end to end stuff, it really did. This
- 19:11Speaker 1: Saturday is a home fixture against Chelmsford in the National League.
- 19:15Speaker 1: South high Town will look to bounce back into the
- 19:17Speaker 1: Southern Counties East Football Premier Division, winning their first game
- 19:21Speaker 1: in Division one, beating the Hall's AFC by one goal
- 19:25Speaker 1: to nil. Now remember their pitch is undergoing a transformation
- 19:28Speaker 1: to an artificial surface. Their next seven games are away,
- 19:32Speaker 1: starting this Saturday against Bride and Ropes, who play their
- 19:35Speaker 1: football very near to the Chilton Athletic ground. And a
- 19:39Speaker 1: date for your diary is Monday thirty first of August.
- 19:43Speaker 1: It's got to be the bank quality, isn't it, because Hi,
- 19:45Speaker 1: the visit near neighbors a lid town in a very
- 19:48Speaker 1: local derby. Now I can't remember if they have ever
- 19:51Speaker 1: ever officially played together in the league, No doubt they've
- 19:54Speaker 1: played in friendlies. But do you know what a they're
- 19:59Speaker 1: going to get a big crowd down there, I reckon,
- 20:00Speaker 1: So hopefully that's going to be a really good game.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Now the Kent County League has started and our two clubs,
- 20:07Speaker 1: New Romney and Hawkins, well they're not doing so well. Actually,
- 20:10Speaker 1: New Romney lost three ones to Equinocchial FC and four
- 20:14Speaker 1: ones a AMG Ballers, whilst Hawkins drew two all with
- 20:18Speaker 1: Stansfield and lost three to to falken Wood. Saturday they
- 20:23Speaker 1: both go again. New Romney are at home to Kent
- 20:25Speaker 1: United and Hawkins are also at home. They welcome a
- 20:29Speaker 1: long lay into the to the ground there up in crickets's.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Close now talking about football this song which just kind
- 20:37Speaker 2: of reminds me of our.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Disability team folksing in Victor and I've got a real
- 20:43Speaker 1: lovely bond with them.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I love going to see their games and.
- 20:47Speaker 1: And report on their on their progress, and it's just funny.
- 20:51Speaker 1: This is on the playlist actually, So this is for
- 20:53Speaker 1: Garret Wilson. He always picks out this song when he
- 20:55Speaker 1: comes on. This is the Kaiser Chiefs and I predict
- 20:58Speaker 1: a riot. That's the Kaiser Chiefs and that's for Garrett
- 21:12Speaker 1: Wilson and all the guys down at the Folks and
- 21:15Speaker 1: the disability team, and they've been training and their season
- 21:18Speaker 1: must be starting very soon, so I'm gonna have to
- 21:21Speaker 1: find out their fixtures and I'm sure in time we
- 21:24Speaker 1: get Garon back in and have a chat and see
- 21:26Speaker 1: how they're getting on.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Right.
- 21:28Speaker 1: So I've got one more running report to bring you.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Now you might have picked up on I've been reporting
- 21:35Speaker 1: about this for a few weeks now. I was approached
- 21:38Speaker 1: by Rob Small and he told me about this event
- 21:41Speaker 1: which was pretty unique and.
- 21:43Speaker 2: There is a podcast. I met up with him.
- 21:46Speaker 1: I couldn't get him into the studio, but I did
- 21:48Speaker 1: meet up with him and we had a chat and
- 21:50Speaker 1: then recorded an interview. But last Sunday it all happened.
- 21:53Speaker 1: The organized race was called a Beat the Bell. Now,
- 21:58Speaker 1: listen to this carefully because it's a new well. I
- 22:01Speaker 1: never heard of this concept, but it's really intriguing. Basically,
- 22:06Speaker 1: you can choose your own distance between one and ten
- 22:09Speaker 1: miles and there's no marshals out on the course. What
- 22:12Speaker 1: you do is you download the video of the distances
- 22:15Speaker 1: onto your phone and you follow the phone. Actually you can.
- 22:21Speaker 1: You know they've got these selected distances from start to finish,
- 22:24Speaker 1: which robers Painstake at Lead produced When we spoke before,
- 22:29Speaker 1: he puts so much effort into this. He went out
- 22:33Speaker 1: and recorded every single distance between one, two, three, right
- 22:37Speaker 1: up to ten miles, and then when he went back
- 22:40Speaker 1: and checked a couple of them.
- 22:41Speaker 2: There was a few changes.
- 22:42Speaker 1: I think one of them I think he said they
- 22:44Speaker 1: were starting to build do some building on one of
- 22:46Speaker 1: the I think is the first one of the first
- 22:48Speaker 1: mile course, and he had to change that, but he
- 22:52Speaker 1: puts so much work into it.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Now you can also change the distance. For example, you
- 22:57Speaker 2: might want to do the one mile and then five
- 23:00Speaker 2: mile and then do a two mile. You know you've
- 23:03Speaker 2: got all day to do it. Now.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Rob sent me Aeat a repeat a report of the day,
- 23:08Speaker 1: which for him started at six am, putting out a
- 23:11Speaker 1: few signs the run starting at eleven and finishing at nine.
- 23:15Speaker 2: So there you go.
- 23:16Speaker 1: You had that window between eleven and nine to get
- 23:18Speaker 1: the run in. You could change the distance, or you
- 23:20Speaker 1: could just go round around in one particular big loop,
- 23:24Speaker 1: say the ten miler.
- 23:25Speaker 2: You know.
- 23:26Speaker 1: The idea was that the bell was rang at nine
- 23:29Speaker 1: o'clock at the anchor in Wingham, which was the race headquarters.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Now Rob hoped he thought of everything, but there was
- 23:36Speaker 1: one thing a missing, the actual bell itself, which was
- 23:41Speaker 1: why the race was called beat the Bell. So Rob's partner, Emma,
- 23:44Speaker 1: she swiftly ran a pbe back to Homer, back with
- 23:47Speaker 1: the bell in place so the race could begin. Now,
- 23:50Speaker 1: over the course of the day, runners came and went,
- 23:52Speaker 1: sometimes on their own, they went out in pairs, large groups,
- 23:56Speaker 1: and Rob says it was chilled atmosphere of people knowing
- 23:59Speaker 1: they could do as many miles or as little miles
- 24:01Speaker 1: as they wanted. Runners came in from as far away
- 24:05Speaker 1: as London, Medway, Chatham, Maystone, Paddletwood and closer to Wingham.
- 24:10Speaker 1: There was loads of interest from Canterbury, Dover and Folkston.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Now the feedback that Rob receives was very complimentary, with
- 24:18Speaker 1: sixty seven runners running on the day, and the icing
- 24:21Speaker 1: on the cake was the fact that the race raised
- 24:24Speaker 1: three hundred pound for the Saint John's Ambulance Brigade and
- 24:28Speaker 1: three hundred pounds for Young Lives Foundation, with the money
- 24:31Speaker 1: still coming in. So after a successful day, it looks
- 24:35Speaker 1: like Rob will be having an even busier day next
- 24:37Speaker 1: year as he plans to repeat the race, and I'm
- 24:40Speaker 1: sure once the word has passed around those numbers will
- 24:43Speaker 1: go up. Now Rob wants to thank everybody at the
- 24:46Speaker 1: anchor for all the support throughout the whole procedure setting
- 24:50Speaker 1: up from the moment he went into the pub and asked,
- 24:52Speaker 1: you know, put the idea to them. He wants to
- 24:55Speaker 1: thank Wingham stores, he wants to thank women Winging.
- 24:59Speaker 2: I just get it. Lots of wabble use, isn't there.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Wingham a well spring, water and Gibson's Farm shop for
- 25:06Speaker 1: sponsoring us through the medals, the water and the hamper,
- 25:09Speaker 1: so you know, lots of local input there. And I've
- 25:14Speaker 1: got a set of results in front of me. And
- 25:17Speaker 1: it wasn't about the time. It was basically yeah, there
- 25:21Speaker 1: was an issue to see if you who could run
- 25:23Speaker 1: the furthest on the day, and a couple of them did.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Hang on, I've got there's one person did thirty three
- 25:30Speaker 1: miles sam Ashby, and there was six people did thirty
- 25:35Speaker 1: one miles. Two people did thirty miles, so it was
- 25:39Speaker 1: great ultra training. But also you know, going right down
- 25:42Speaker 1: the list, there was loads of people did ten, five,
- 25:45Speaker 1: six miles, eight miles, and there was even two people
- 25:49Speaker 1: that went out and did just a one mile, but
- 25:52Speaker 1: they did it. They got a medal and they were
- 25:54Speaker 1: part of it. So I mean it was a great idea,
- 25:57Speaker 1: rob and you followed it through off air. You told
- 26:00Speaker 1: me a lot about the trials and tribulations, that went
- 26:03Speaker 1: on behind a race, but you've pulled through and you
- 26:07Speaker 1: can have a sleepful night now after all those nights
- 26:12Speaker 1: of tossing and turning, you can get your hit down
- 26:14Speaker 1: and start preparing for next year. Right, We're going to
- 26:18Speaker 1: go back to nineteen eighty five, and I do remember
- 26:21Speaker 1: this one and as soon as I start playing it,
- 26:24Speaker 1: if you have seen the video, you'll know exactly what
- 26:26Speaker 1: I mean. Two iconic singers, one no longer with us,
- 26:30Speaker 1: David Bowie, but we've got David Bowie and Mick Jagger
- 26:33Speaker 1: and they're ever rendition of dancing in the streets. Okay,
- 26:42Speaker 1: stop to.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Out America, ron.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Around the world.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Nick Jago and David Bowie there in nineteen eighty five,
- 27:12Speaker 2: and just a picture of them in that. I'll tell
- 27:14Speaker 2: you what.
- 27:14Speaker 1: I'm going to go home and put that video on track,
- 27:17Speaker 1: it down on YouTube and play it again. Well, I
- 27:20Speaker 1: can picture a little snippets of it, you know. But
- 27:22Speaker 1: I mean, it was starting to be the era where
- 27:25Speaker 1: there was like some classic singers or groups and then
- 27:28Speaker 1: they got together, you know, things like the Traveling Wilbury's.
- 27:31Speaker 1: You know, four awesome artists all got together on one
- 27:34Speaker 1: one song that is just great.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Idea.
- 27:37Speaker 1: All right, Okay, so moving on me or running out
- 27:39Speaker 1: of time, but I want to get this one in
- 27:41Speaker 1: because I went to Clacton on Sunday and I had
- 27:44Speaker 1: a fantastic day. So this is haircut one hundred. He
- 28:18Speaker 1: got one hundred day, fantastic day. And I'll fust admit
- 28:21Speaker 1: I've just been looking at Mick Jagger and David Bowie
- 28:24Speaker 1: on my phone there on that video. Oh, I've just
- 28:26Speaker 1: got to get home and watch it all again. Okay,
- 28:28Speaker 1: Well we haven't got long, so we're going to play
- 28:30Speaker 1: out with this one. I wish it was a punk
- 28:32Speaker 1: rocker with flowers in my head, punk rocker with flowers
- 28:36Speaker 1: in my hair in seventy seven and sixty nine in
- 28:42Speaker 1: Revolutions In there, I was born too Ly World.
- 28:49Speaker 2: That's about it from me.
- 28:51Speaker 1: This week, I'll be back on SATs from ten to eleven.
- 28:54Speaker 1: We will be joined by Lee Fichi from the Folkston
- 28:56Speaker 1: Rugby Club, who will be bringing in two or three
- 28:59Speaker 1: of his under nine so there's something to look forward to.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Enjoy the rest of your day
- 29:03Speaker 1: On one oh five point nine FM, online at Radio
- 29:07Speaker 1: Folkston dot com and on your smart speaker.
