- 2:08Speaker 7: Halloween What's up?
- 2:14Speaker 5: Welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian.
- 2:16Speaker 8: I'm Fred.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I'm Matt.
- 2:18Speaker 9: I'm Marlena.
- 2:20Speaker 8: I'm Michael.
- 2:21Speaker 7: And I'm Carl.
- 2:22Speaker 5: And we're coming to you live via digital recording from
- 2:24Speaker 5: Fred's backyard. Fred, you volunteered for this. We kind of
- 2:29Speaker 5: teased it last episode, technically, on both fronts. The project
- 2:33Speaker 5: we were going to do and the movie we were
- 2:35Speaker 5: going to watch. So they all dominoed their way into
- 2:38Speaker 5: this week. So are you now regretting that we're all
- 2:42Speaker 5: centered in your table and whatnot? loitering in your backyard.
- 2:46Speaker 8: Actually, this is really fun for me. I like coming
- 2:49Speaker 8: out and building a fire in the backyard. I think
- 2:51Speaker 8: I'm not supposed to.
- 2:53Speaker 7: The neighbors are cool with it.
- 2:56Speaker 8: But a friend of mine, every time he does it,
- 2:59Speaker 8: somebody calls the fire department.
- 3:01Speaker 5: But not you, because they like you.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:05Speaker 7: Well, that wouldn't be a terrible way to end a podcast.
- 3:09Speaker 5: As long as we get sirens in the background, I'll
- 3:11Speaker 5: be like, well, gotta go. Just start packing things up.
- 3:14Speaker 7: We could be like, oh, we were waiting for you guys.
- 3:15Speaker 7: It took you a while.
- 3:17Speaker 5: But you have this fancy fire pit. They can't get
- 3:19Speaker 5: mad at you. You have bricks around it. It's fine.
- 3:22Speaker 7: It used to just be like on the ground.
- 3:26Speaker 5: I think you just built it last time we did this.
- 3:28Speaker 9: I feel like all of nature is conspiring against us
- 3:30Speaker 9: to make the sound quality of this episode horrible.
- 3:33Speaker 5: The world conspires against us every episode. I hate to
- 3:36Speaker 5: tell you. I'm not really.
- 3:38Speaker 8: Oh, it does get worse.
- 3:42Speaker 5: Just wait till puppy gets out of control.
- 3:45Speaker 8: We haven't heard from Pup yet.
- 3:46Speaker 5: Special guest of many previous holiday episodes, Puppy. And Angel.
- 3:51Speaker 8: Angel used to be the big barker, but she has
- 3:55Speaker 8: a dog to do that for her now.
- 3:57Speaker 5: She's brought in a special guest barker. She can take
- 4:01Speaker 5: a break. So, we are back rounding out our spooky
- 4:06Speaker 5: Halloween episodes. Does anyone want to fill in with spooky
- 4:14Speaker 5: Halloween related stories and or have you watched any scary
- 4:18Speaker 5: movies since well last time for a couple of you but.
- 4:20Speaker 9: I saw Babadook at the outdoor theater thing that the
- 4:25Speaker 9: flea off market people are putting on it was really fun.
- 4:27Speaker 5: Had you not seen it before no I've seen it
- 4:29Speaker 5: before okay I assumed you had my.
- 4:31Speaker 9: Friend that I went with she'd never.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Seen it before was she scarred for life.
- 4:35Speaker 9: She was and we were in the front row so
- 4:37Speaker 9: she was really embarrassed she like jumped and screamed and
- 4:40Speaker 9: like hid under my armpit.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Sorry, I pointed and laughed and Nelsoned her. She was
- 4:46Speaker 5: kind of asking for it. Were you there?
- 4:49Speaker 9: I didn't see you.
- 4:49Speaker 6: Okay.
- 4:49Speaker 9: I was going to say, there were like 10 people there.
- 4:52Speaker 5: So if you were there, that's really weird.
- 4:55Speaker 9: What a loser. It was really hard to see, and
- 4:58Speaker 9: it was super loud, but it was fun, and it
- 5:01Speaker 9: wasn't too cold.
- 5:02Speaker 8: It was hard to see?
- 5:03Speaker 9: Yeah, because there's a lot of lights in that parking lot,
- 5:06Speaker 9: and they can't dim the street lights at all, so
- 5:09Speaker 9: it kind of shines on the screen.
- 5:10Speaker 8: They need a BB gun or something.
- 5:13Speaker 5: We have so many events that, I don't know, sometimes
- 5:16Speaker 5: I don't think I'm through. As we found out.
- 5:19Speaker 10: I just wanted to use that lot.
- 5:20Speaker 7: No, put it in the flea off lot.
- 5:21Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 5:22Speaker 5: So, I mean, we found that out. I had to
- 5:24Speaker 5: block out entire windows on our previous one. So then
- 5:27Speaker 5: we just moved to, you know, Gallery K, where there's
- 5:29Speaker 5: a big board in front of the window. So that
- 5:32Speaker 5: makes it handy.
- 5:33Speaker 7: We can darken it up in there.
- 5:34Speaker 5: That makes it better.
- 5:35Speaker 8: They have some big glaring light up on a post
- 5:38Speaker 8: over here in our backyard that just keeps it light.
- 5:40Speaker 5: I kind of remember that. It's like at a football
- 5:42Speaker 5: stadium or something.
- 5:42Speaker 8: It wasn't always there, but now it's like a prison
- 5:45Speaker 8: yard at night. It's like, you know.
- 5:47Speaker 5: Well, you are always making a break for it.
- 5:49Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 5:49Speaker 5: They put the big circle on you.
- 5:51Speaker 8: And then the smartest thing I ever did was install
- 5:53Speaker 8: an automatic light on the back of my neighbor's garage.
- 5:57Speaker 5: Did you tell them?
- 5:58Speaker 8: Or maybe he did that.
- 5:59Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 6:00Speaker 8: But it helps me out a lot. And over here
- 6:05Speaker 8: at like this facility, it's like an extended care facility
- 6:09Speaker 8: where they have the prison light. Because I guess maybe.
- 6:12Speaker 5: The patients are trying to make a break for it.
- 6:14Speaker 8: They're making a break for it. They had for years
- 6:18Speaker 8: on this gate over here a metal sign that said,
- 6:20Speaker 8: Protected by Pinkertons. And I would walk by that all
- 6:24Speaker 8: the time and think, I really have my doubts that
- 6:27Speaker 8: that place is protected by Pinkertons. And I just made
- 6:31Speaker 8: it up in my mind that, oh, I've got to
- 6:33Speaker 8: steal that thing. I've got to have it. And it disappeared.
- 6:39Speaker 8: Just like that.
- 6:39Speaker 5: That's your story and you're sticking to it.
- 6:42Speaker 8: It disappeared. But up along the fence here, Like, behind
- 6:48Speaker 8: some vines and stuff, they had another one. Like, they
- 6:52Speaker 8: had the nerve to claim twice that that place was...
- 6:55Speaker 8: I don't think the Pinkertons... Do they even exist anymore?
- 6:58Speaker 5: Is it the same Pinkertons? They're just... They're immortals, and
- 7:01Speaker 5: they're still around.
- 7:02Speaker 8: They're who chased Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
- 7:05Speaker 5: And he's the undead, obviously.
- 7:07Speaker 8: And I think the guy who wrote.
- 7:10Speaker 8: Maltese Falcon, he was a Pinkerton guy for a while.
- 7:13Speaker 9: So is it like when people put signs on their
- 7:16Speaker 9: garage that say protected by Smith and Wesson?
- 7:18Speaker 5: I think that means something else.
- 7:21Speaker 8: Well, no, the Pinkertons were actually like hired, you know, detectives.
- 7:24Speaker 8: Security detail, yeah.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Okay.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:28Speaker 4: I had a friend that worked at a Pinkerton security
- 7:31Speaker 4: place in the security booth for.
- 7:34Speaker 10: People that, you know, go in and out.
- 7:36Speaker 5: The drive up booth? Yeah.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Well, the check in booth. You drive your car up
- 7:39Speaker 4: and show them your badge or whatever. And he got
- 7:41Speaker 4: fired for smoking pot in the booth. That was the
- 7:46Speaker 4: end of that job.
- 7:46Speaker 8: You can't get a good security job anymore.
- 7:48Speaker 5: I'm done.
- 7:51Speaker 8: But anyway, I stole the one up there.
- 7:53Speaker 1: So.
- 7:54Speaker 5: That's your story and you're sticking to it.
- 7:56Speaker 4: I have another story.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:59Speaker 4: Um, do you remember, um, your friends of the podcast
- 8:03Speaker 4: do that do not live in Louisville will probably have
- 8:05Speaker 4: no idea what I'm talking about. So I apologize to them, but, um,
- 8:08Speaker 4: on Preston, before it turned into Preston highway, there used
- 8:11Speaker 4: to be a Smith's furniture that had the giant, a
- 8:14Speaker 4: giant owl on top of the building. And I had
- 8:17Speaker 4: a friend that commercials went.
- 8:19Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 8:19Speaker 4: And I had a friend that was obsessed with that
- 8:22Speaker 4: owl after it closed because the building stayed closed for
- 8:25Speaker 4: a while before they turn it into something else or whatever.
- 8:27Speaker 4: But the owl stayed up there on top. And so
- 8:30Speaker 4: he had this elaborate plan of how we were going
- 8:32Speaker 4: to get up on top of this building and steal
- 8:34Speaker 4: this owl from the top of the building. But it
- 8:36Speaker 4: was gone when it was finally time to do that.
- 8:39Speaker 8: It's like they hear you.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:40Speaker 8: You start thinking about it. Yeah.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Who?
- 8:44Speaker 5: Who hears us?
- 8:45Speaker 10: The owls.
- 8:46Speaker 8: Like when I was in college, every Sunday all the
- 8:49Speaker 8: art students would go to this place called the Hungry Bear.
- 8:52Speaker 8: And they actually had a stuffed bear there. But it's
- 8:55Speaker 8: paw was messed up and so it looked like it
- 8:58Speaker 8: was holding a finger out going like, excuse me, pardon me.
- 9:02Speaker 8: And a friend of mine had a plan for how
- 9:05Speaker 8: to steal the bear. Because there was a plate glass
- 9:07Speaker 8: window and the bear was standing there and he thought
- 9:09Speaker 8: you could just back a truck into the window and
- 9:13Speaker 8: the bear would fall into the back and you're gone.
- 9:16Speaker 5: This is not the worst plan I've seen.
- 9:19Speaker 8: And I hadn't been back there in a long time
- 9:22Speaker 8: but then My daughter was, like, in a summer program.
- 9:25Speaker 8: We went down there, and it completely disoriented me because
- 9:29Speaker 8: the Hungry Bear restaurant was still there, but it was
- 9:32Speaker 8: on the other side of the street. Like, the same street,
- 9:38Speaker 8: but on the other side and maybe, like, a couple
- 9:40Speaker 8: of doors down. And I'm like, this is just, like,
- 9:43Speaker 8: y'all are just screwing with me.
- 9:44Speaker 5: Yeah, they're just messing with you.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:47Speaker 5: It was all the Bears' idea.
- 9:48Speaker 8: I feel like now we're on sort of a roll.
- 9:50Speaker 8: We should think of something to steal.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Oh, I have ideas.
- 9:54Speaker 5: So when there are sirens at the end of the episode,
- 9:57Speaker 5: it won't be fire.
- 9:58Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 10:01Speaker 5: Well, I saw Crimson Peak.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 10:03Speaker 9: We saw that, too.
- 10:04Speaker 7: I forgot.
- 10:05Speaker 3: All right.
- 10:05Speaker 5: That's very Halloween-y. So what was your take on it?
- 10:09Speaker 5: Without spoiling anything.
- 10:10Speaker 9: I really like Tom Hiddleston, so.
- 10:13Speaker 5: That's pretty uniform at this point.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Across the board, everybody likes him.
- 10:17Speaker 4: I mean.
- 10:19Speaker 5: I liked it a lot.
- 10:20Speaker 9: I mean, it wasn't like a surprising plot line or
- 10:24Speaker 9: anything like that.
- 10:25Speaker 5: But I thought the effects were good. Yeah, it didn't
- 10:28Speaker 5: really take any weird turns, which is kind of good.
- 10:30Speaker 5: There's a little too many, like, what a twist. We're
- 10:33Speaker 5: kind of nice sometimes. It's nice to escape that and
- 10:36Speaker 5: just follow through with a normal plot line. But yeah,
- 10:39Speaker 5: I think Tom did what I kind of expected him
- 10:41Speaker 5: to do. Mia did what I expected her to do.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Jessica Chastain was badass. She's always impressive, but this time
- 10:50Speaker 5: it's like, oh, there's a whole new level there. I
- 10:52Speaker 5: haven't seen that before. That's impressive.
- 10:53Speaker 9: She's in two major movies right now.
- 10:55Speaker 5: She's in every movie. And I don't blame them, because
- 10:57Speaker 5: she's that damn good.
- 10:58Speaker 9: She was great, definitely. And Charlie.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Which one? The doctor. Yeah, I was going to say
- 11:09Speaker 5: the other guy. There's only four people in the movie.
- 11:11Speaker 5: The one that I had no idea was in Sons
- 11:13Speaker 5: of Anarchy. I was told that today. I was like, oh,
- 11:17Speaker 5: I've yet to see an episode.
- 11:18Speaker 9: I've never watched it.
- 11:20Speaker 8: I'll watch it.
- 11:21Speaker 5: I like the Beast and Pig Bundy. So I'll watch
- 11:24Speaker 5: them ride motorcycles.
- 11:25Speaker 8: You know, when I listen to the podcast, I'll listen
- 11:27Speaker 8: to something like this and then go, wait a minute,
- 11:30Speaker 8: what was the name of the movie they were talking about?
- 11:33Speaker 8: So what was this again?
- 11:34Speaker 5: Crimson Peak.
- 11:35Speaker 8: See, that was just for me, because I.
- 11:37Speaker 10: Is it all of this?
- 11:39Speaker 5: It's still Toro. Yeah, it's still Toro. And that was
- 11:43Speaker 5: my thing, is it's also kind of a return to
- 11:45Speaker 5: form for him. Because I was pretty let down by
- 11:47Speaker 5: Giant Fighting Robots. Don't get me wrong, the Fighting Robots
- 11:49Speaker 5: part was awesome, but, like, I've said it before on
- 11:52Speaker 5: the show.
- 11:52Speaker 7: They're going to sequelize that, right?
- 11:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, it made tons of money. Like, I
- 11:56Speaker 5: don't blame them, but.
- 11:57Speaker 8: When I watch Giant Fighting Robots, I just think, who
- 12:00Speaker 8: was it that said... Was it Chris on Family Guy
- 12:04Speaker 8: who said, you don't have a soul?
- 12:06Speaker 5: Wasn't that just about Brian?
- 12:09Speaker 8: That's what I was going to say to you. It
- 12:11Speaker 8: was about Brian. But that's what I think about the
- 12:14Speaker 8: fighting robots. It's like, it doesn't matter if you die.
- 12:16Speaker 8: You don't have a soul.
- 12:18Speaker 5: It is. It was pretty rock-em-sock-em robot. And that was
- 12:20Speaker 5: my problem because, and it's so weird for him because
- 12:22Speaker 5: I feel like he's a filmmaker who's always done so
- 12:25Speaker 5: much character development and specifically has had really strong female
- 12:29Speaker 5: characters and like, our female character had no real time
- 12:33Speaker 5: to expand.
- 12:34Speaker 7: They were kind of Cinemax.
- 12:35Speaker 5: The side characters were all caricatures at best, you know,
- 12:38Speaker 5: from whatever country they were from.
- 12:39Speaker 9: Hey, Charlie Kelly was great.
- 12:42Speaker 5: It's a fun movie. It's just, it was, if it
- 12:44Speaker 5: would have been directed by some no-name person, I wouldn't
- 12:47Speaker 5: have cared.
- 12:47Speaker 9: I didn't know it was Guillermo del Toro.
- 12:48Speaker 5: It was Guillermo del Toro, and it's just not what he's,
- 12:51Speaker 5: normally doing. He's usually way more impressive with the screenplay.
- 12:55Speaker 7: Maybe it was more like, it was like something he's
- 12:57Speaker 7: always wanted to do.
- 12:58Speaker 5: It was. Like, I think that's, and I think that's
- 13:00Speaker 5: why the fighting is so good.
- 13:01Speaker 7: Everyone's just got to put up with this because of.
- 13:03Speaker 5: Some Guillermo del Toro. Because, yeah, he was a kid
- 13:05Speaker 5: who wanted to do that. So, I mean, I get
- 13:07Speaker 5: that part, but I feel like it's just so weird
- 13:09Speaker 5: that the performances and the writing for the characters wasn't there.
- 13:14Speaker 5: Where this, I think it comes back to, we spent
- 13:16Speaker 5: a lot of time developing those three main characters, basically.
- 13:19Speaker 5: And I feel like That and just the visuals are amazing.
- 13:23Speaker 5: It's so gorgeous to look at.
- 13:25Speaker 9: In the commercial, I thought the effects would be kind
- 13:28Speaker 9: of cheesy, and they're clearly CGI.
- 13:31Speaker 5: They're impressive CGI.
- 13:33Speaker 9: Yeah, it's really good CGI. I think that when you
- 13:38Speaker 9: watch a movie in a theater, it's way scarier than
- 13:40Speaker 9: when you watch it at home. I don't know why,
- 13:41Speaker 9: but there were a few parts where I was like,
- 13:45Speaker 9: genuinely kind of like scared yeah unnerving a few of
- 13:48Speaker 9: those shots and the the creepy cgi was you know
- 13:52Speaker 9: our bestest friend doug.
- 13:53Speaker 7: But those fight scenes were fantastic on the big screen
- 13:55Speaker 7: if you didn't i mean i went to see it
- 13:57Speaker 7: in the theater.
- 13:58Speaker 5: Are you on pacific rim oh yeah yeah okay because
- 14:01Speaker 5: we move back to.
- 14:01Speaker 7: Crimson well so what's the i was lost i yeah
- 14:05Speaker 7: i don't what's the um the plot or what's the,
- 14:08Speaker 7: what kind of a scary movie is it? Ghost.
- 14:10Speaker 5: It's a haunted house story, which again is like one
- 14:12Speaker 5: of those, I said this to Doug, I was like,
- 14:14Speaker 5: how has he not made this movie before? Like this
- 14:16Speaker 5: seems like it would be right in his wheelhouse of
- 14:19Speaker 5: creepy ghost movies, scary visuals. You know, he, he seems
- 14:23Speaker 5: like he would totally be into that, which then you
- 14:24Speaker 5: find out he is and was even trying to do
- 14:27Speaker 5: a haunted mansion movie and get clearance from Disney. And
- 14:30Speaker 5: then that fell through. And I think he was just like, well,
- 14:32Speaker 5: screw it. I'll just make my own movie. And now
- 14:34Speaker 5: I've heard he's going to do that too. So they
- 14:36Speaker 5: brought him back into it. And let's drag this out
- 14:38Speaker 5: a little longer because Marlena is going to explode if
- 14:40Speaker 5: she doesn't talk.
- 14:41Speaker 9: I forgot to tell, I also watched The Ghost and Mr.
- 14:44Speaker 8: Chicken.
- 14:45Speaker 5: Another Halloween classic.
- 14:47Speaker 9: Speaking of haunted houses, I love that movie so much.
- 14:50Speaker 9: Like that's the one thing my mom and I see
- 14:52Speaker 9: eye to eye on. Like how great The Ghost and Mr.
- 14:54Speaker 9: Chicken is.
- 14:56Speaker 5: The one thing.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 14:58Speaker 5: That's okay. So good. If there's one thing between you two,
- 15:02Speaker 5: that's a good one to have.
- 15:03Speaker 9: The only thing Yeah, and it was so good. It
- 15:06Speaker 9: didn't disappoint. Holds up, you know. 50 years.
- 15:09Speaker 8: Classic.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:12Speaker 5: I just like Don Knotts.
- 15:13Speaker 9: Exactly. As I'm watching it, I just... Anytime I see
- 15:16Speaker 9: Don Knotts.
- 15:16Speaker 5: You're quoting her at all times.
- 15:17Speaker 9: I just like Don Knotts.
- 15:18Speaker 5: I just like Don Knotts. Best line for a movie ever.
- 15:22Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 15:24Speaker 8: So, anyway.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:26Speaker 5: Crimson Peak's pretty impressive.
- 15:28Speaker 8: Well, I saw another movie that came up on the
- 15:30Speaker 8: last podcast, which isn't intended to be... scary movie but
- 15:35Speaker 8: it turned out to be oddly horrifying.
- 15:39Speaker 5: In normal horror ways or for you personally i.
- 15:43Speaker 8: Would think any sentient being would um so i'm fine
- 15:50Speaker 8: well i've been meaning to see this forever but i
- 15:53Speaker 8: heard that there was a film treatment of faulkner's the
- 15:56Speaker 8: sound and the fury you did i've heard about it
- 15:59Speaker 8: forever and i keep bringing it up and And somebody
- 16:02Speaker 8: told me, well, it's like they make Jason Compson the hero. Yeah,
- 16:06Speaker 8: but he's kind of the only sane person who isn't dead,
- 16:10Speaker 8: so maybe they had to. But we started watching it,
- 16:14Speaker 8: and I was really confused and baffled at first because
- 16:17Speaker 8: I think the girl in it is catty, but it's not.
- 16:20Speaker 8: It's her daughter, like, they're way at the end of
- 16:24Speaker 8: the book. But anyway, the thing is, like, parts of it,
- 16:29Speaker 8: for one, Yul Brynner has hair. And he's playing like
- 16:33Speaker 8: this southern... It's a little weird already. Ruined southern aristocrat.
- 16:39Speaker 8: And who's just sort of a tight-lipped asshole. You won't
- 16:45Speaker 8: predict a badass. And like parts of it, like some
- 16:48Speaker 8: of his dialogue is really good. And so at first
- 16:51Speaker 8: I was almost ready to bail because I don't even
- 16:54Speaker 8: see what this has to do. Also, it says he's
- 16:56Speaker 8: not related to... To the other siblings. And in the book,
- 17:00Speaker 8: I mean, they're all siblings. And they keep making this
- 17:04Speaker 8: big point of how he's no blood relative. And that's
- 17:08Speaker 8: because they're preparing for a.
- 17:11Speaker 5: A big change in the story? Okay.
- 17:15Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 17:16Speaker 5: That happens in these movies.
- 17:18Speaker 8: Okay, so... In the book, his sister, Caddy... I don't
- 17:24Speaker 8: even know how to explain this.
- 17:27Speaker 2: But.
- 17:28Speaker 8: Okay, so Quentin is their one brother who's, I think
- 17:30Speaker 8: he's a freshman at Harvard when he kills himself. He
- 17:34Speaker 8: commits suicide. There was this thing like he and his
- 17:37Speaker 8: sister had had this incestuous relationship. But it turns out
- 17:41Speaker 8: they didn't really. He just said that because he wanted
- 17:45Speaker 8: them to be like cast out of society together. They
- 17:49Speaker 8: were very close. But he kills himself. Caddy runs off
- 17:54Speaker 8: with somebody. she has this baby and leaves the baby
- 17:57Speaker 8: behind and the baby is Quentin named after the brother. Anyway,
- 18:03Speaker 8: and Jason Compson is just kind of an asshole, just
- 18:07Speaker 8: like a complete asshole in the book. They make him
- 18:10Speaker 8: more sympathetic. Like he's trying to hold things together and
- 18:15Speaker 8: he's trying to be a good influence on Quentin. Who's
- 18:18Speaker 8: sort of getting into trouble and seeing some weirdo guy
- 18:22Speaker 8: who looks like Mannix a little bit.
- 18:24Speaker 10: Um, And it's all.
- 18:26Speaker 8: Very weird and creepy. But then you start to get
- 18:29Speaker 8: the drift of where it's going. And it's almost like
- 18:35Speaker 8: Jason Compson, the aristocratic asshole, and his sister, who in
- 18:42Speaker 8: this version is not his sister. They make a big point.
- 18:47Speaker 8: They're not blood related because they end it with this
- 18:51Speaker 8: kind of Henry Higgins, Eliza Doolittle Like they're becoming, like
- 18:57Speaker 8: he created her. And now they're kind of a couple.
- 19:02Speaker 8: And you're just watching it going, oh, fucking God. No,
- 19:05Speaker 8: they're not doing this. Oh, yes, they're doing this.
- 19:09Speaker 5: Does she walk and talk like a regular lady? Exactly.
- 19:11Speaker 8: Except instead of teaching her how to have high society manners, well,
- 19:16Speaker 8: he kind of is doing that a little bit in
- 19:19Speaker 8: the old pseudo-aristocratic Southern. But also, he's just, teaching her
- 19:26Speaker 8: not to be a whore basically.
- 19:28Speaker 5: These are good lessons though yeah he's just.
- 19:31Speaker 8: Oh and they turn uh the mother it's like very
- 19:34Speaker 8: tennessee williams very like it's blanche dubois which you don't
- 19:39Speaker 8: get that in the book at all is the i
- 19:41Speaker 8: don't know man it was just such a roller coaster.
- 19:45Speaker 4: I'm having a really hard time believing you're not describing
- 19:48Speaker 4: a valley of the dolls movie Because that's exactly what
- 19:51Speaker 4: this sounds like. It's kind of like they took a
- 19:55Speaker 4: thread from movies.
- 19:57Speaker 8: At the time, and they're like, what are we going
- 20:00Speaker 8: to do with this book?
- 20:02Speaker 5: That's what I was going to ask. What year was
- 20:04Speaker 5: this made?
- 20:05Speaker 8: Fifty-nine.
- 20:07Speaker 5: That's coming out of when they were super controlling. That's
- 20:09Speaker 5: why I was thinking maybe they couldn't have some of
- 20:11Speaker 5: the weird stuff in the book in the movies.
- 20:13Speaker 8: But see, I thought that early on. But then what
- 20:16Speaker 8: they did do was even weirder.
- 20:18Speaker 5: Yeah, that doesn't help.
- 20:19Speaker 8: Than the stuff I thought they were trying to avoid. And,
- 20:23Speaker 8: you know, the book, it's like plainly he's imitating James
- 20:27Speaker 8: Joyce interior. So it's very interior. And it's hard to
- 20:31Speaker 8: get a clear picture sometimes of what's going on in
- 20:34Speaker 8: the world. outside people's skulls you just get refractions of
- 20:40Speaker 8: it but I don't know man it was so weird
- 20:43Speaker 8: and I don't remember it that vividly in places but
- 20:48Speaker 8: you know to be fair neither did Faulkner you know
- 20:51Speaker 8: when they'd ask him about it he'd turn a tree
- 20:53Speaker 8: into a drain pipe he didn't have a copy of
- 20:56Speaker 8: the book anymore he didn't know but yeah that was
- 21:00Speaker 8: so weird and I almost can't believe we made it
- 21:05Speaker 8: through it but now I'm on the other side.
- 21:10Speaker 5: Creepy. There's your creepy ghost story, people.
- 21:17Speaker 7: Last night I started watching The Host. It was like
- 21:20Speaker 7: 2000 and something Korean creature feature. Yeah, I'm not quite
- 21:25Speaker 7: done with it, but it's pretty fun. It's got some
- 21:28Speaker 7: really wacky slapsticky moments. I think everybody likes it. It
- 21:32Speaker 7: must be a Korean thing. I don't know. It's pretty sweet, though.
- 21:35Speaker 5: We all have our different senses of humor, specifically from
- 21:38Speaker 5: country to country.
- 21:40Speaker 4: I recently saw a trailer. Well, it wasn't a trailer.
- 21:42Speaker 4: It was a review for a video game called Press
- 21:45Speaker 4: X to Not Die. And it was very Halloween-y. It
- 21:49Speaker 4: was made by what appeared to be Canadian college students
- 21:55Speaker 4: for a final project in some sort of generic entertainment class.
- 22:02Speaker 4: And so there are all these just... nobodies that can't
- 22:06Speaker 4: act worth a damn. And it's a full motion video,
- 22:08Speaker 4: video game, right? So they film these scenes where these
- 22:11Speaker 4: people are acting very poorly and they're acting out these
- 22:15Speaker 4: horror scenes. And every once in a while, the scene
- 22:18Speaker 4: will stop and you'll get, uh, you'll be prompted to
- 22:20Speaker 4: press a button, like, uh, kick the clown in the
- 22:23Speaker 4: nuts or karate chop the clown right in the face.
- 22:26Speaker 4: And you push the button and it shows.
- 22:29Speaker 10: The, uh, the actor.
- 22:30Speaker 4: It's like POV, like a guy's wearing a GoPro and
- 22:34Speaker 4: you're that guy. And it shows him, like, badly karate
- 22:37Speaker 4: chopped this clown in this parking garage was a part
- 22:40Speaker 4: that I saw. and it looked amazing in that way
- 22:44Speaker 4: that the most terrible amazing things always look amazing. And
- 22:48Speaker 4: it's apparently a $ 4 video game, and I've never played it,
- 22:51Speaker 4: and I have no idea who's responsible for it, but
- 22:54Speaker 4: it looked very much like The Room, you know, the
- 22:57Speaker 4: movie The Room of video games. And I have to
- 23:00Speaker 4: play it immediately because I think it sounds amazing.
- 23:02Speaker 8: Now there has to be a video game version of
- 23:04Speaker 8: The Room.
- 23:05Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 23:05Speaker 5: Oh, there is one.
- 23:06Speaker 4: There is.
- 23:06Speaker 5: There is one, yeah.
- 23:07Speaker 9: People are talking about when they talk about it.
- 23:09Speaker 10: It's made up.
- 23:10Speaker 8: It's one of those things.
- 23:11Speaker 2: No.
- 23:12Speaker 8: It's an urban myth, and everybody plays along.
- 23:15Speaker 5: It's very 8-bit-ish, and it looks really bad on purpose,
- 23:19Speaker 5: I'm assuming. It does spoil the movie for you, though.
- 23:22Speaker 5: If you play the game, you find out what happens
- 23:24Speaker 5: at the end of the movie. Well, to round out
- 23:27Speaker 5: our Halloween intro here, this is usually part of the
- 23:31Speaker 5: festivity somewhere before we're done. But I couldn't bring anything
- 23:34Speaker 5: big because then Marlena yells at me because we eat
- 23:36Speaker 5: too much, and I bring too much candy. I brought
- 23:38Speaker 5: a lot of candy. These are classic. Peanut butter kisses
- 23:44Speaker 5: are classic holiday fare, and I'll hear no bad talk
- 23:49Speaker 5: about them.
- 23:50Speaker 4: I'm going to feel like a punished 12-year-old when I
- 23:53Speaker 4: eat them.
- 23:54Speaker 8: It'll be very nostalgic.
- 23:55Speaker 5: That's why I got them. I don't think I've gotten
- 23:56Speaker 5: them in several years, and I was like, I know
- 23:59Speaker 5: they're not real food. And that's kind of why I
- 24:01Speaker 5: want to re-experience it.
- 24:03Speaker 7: Like the last thing in the bucket that you eat?
- 24:04Speaker 5: Yeah, to remind myself. Because I still kind of liked
- 24:06Speaker 5: them as a kid.
- 24:07Speaker 7: Sometimes they're in a bowl all the way into May.
- 24:09Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 24:10Speaker 9: Last time I was with some friends eating these, my
- 24:13Speaker 9: friend was defending the honor of Mary Jane peanut butter
- 24:17Speaker 9: kisses to her husband and pulled a tooth out eating one.
- 24:22Speaker 5: That's what they're good for.
- 24:23Speaker 8: You're going to lose a tooth.
- 24:26Speaker 5: I used to do that as a kid. Bit of
- 24:27Speaker 5: Honey was the magic one for me, though. I think
- 24:29Speaker 5: I took out at least two with Bit of Honey.
- 24:31Speaker 7: Jolly Ranchers.
- 24:33Speaker 9: It's like the same company, I think, that makes Bit
- 24:34Speaker 9: of Honey and these Mary Jane, Peter Berkus's things.
- 24:37Speaker 5: These are the getovers.
- 24:40Speaker 8: They had the right wrappers.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Yep.
- 24:43Speaker 5: I think that's the other reason I like them. I
- 24:45Speaker 5: just like the cheesy, nostalgic orange and black wrappers.
- 24:47Speaker 12: I think they have a good flavor.
- 24:49Speaker 8: I was the one who was doing the wrapper up
- 24:51Speaker 8: by the mic. I wanted people to get that. Immersive
- 24:54Speaker 8: sensory experience. The full experience of Halloween.
- 24:59Speaker 5: Well, now that we're all having candy, we should probably
- 25:02Speaker 5: take a break. Yeah. And we're going to go fire
- 25:05Speaker 5: up some more of this fire. It's not dying yet.
- 25:08Speaker 5: They've kept it going.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:10Speaker 5: And then have hot dogs and marshmallows, maybe at the
- 25:13Speaker 5: same time. And vegan dogs.
- 25:16Speaker 10: Mellow dog.
- 25:17Speaker 7: That's a classic.
- 25:18Speaker 5: We've got the vegan dog option, right? Okay. Just to
- 25:20Speaker 5: keep it fair for all parties involved. All right, let's
- 25:24Speaker 5: go take a break and have some hot dogs and marshmallows.
- 25:27Speaker 8: Halloween favorites.
- 25:39Speaker 13: A dinner was served for three at Dracula's house by
- 25:43Speaker 13: the sea. The orders were fine, but I choked on
- 25:48Speaker 13: my wine when I learned that the main course was me.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Hi.
- 26:09Speaker 9: You hungry?
- 26:10Speaker 3: Looking for a tempting treat? Hold on till I absorb
- 26:14Speaker 3: some heat. Some added tang might please you, too.
- 26:19Speaker 7: I'll slide into an oven-fresh bun, and I'm ready.
- 26:23Speaker 3: For your eating fun. Why don't you try a juicy
- 26:27Speaker 3: good hot dog?
- 26:29Speaker 1: Mmm, delicious.
- 26:32Speaker 14: This episode is brought to you by Crosley Turntables. Starting

- 27:05Speaker 14: out which turntable you need.
- 27:07Speaker 1: It's spooky.
- 27:09Speaker 10: It's eerie.
- 27:12Speaker 3: It's The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, starring three-time Emmy Award
- 27:16Speaker 3: winner Don Knotts as the world's bravest coward. I have
- 27:19Speaker 3: been called brave.
- 27:20Speaker 8: Now let me clarify this.
- 27:22Speaker 6: As you see, I'm a lion with girls, a tiger
- 27:26Speaker 6: with men, and I'm just naturally at home in a
- 27:30Speaker 6: haunted house.
- 27:32Speaker 1: So what's brave? How should I know?
- 27:35Speaker 8: A chicken. Mr.
- 27:36Speaker 3: Chicken to you. In this motion picture, he starts as
- 27:39Speaker 3: a roving reporter. Now he's a raving reporter trying to
- 27:42Speaker 3: solve a murder mystery in a house of terror. And
- 27:45Speaker 3: he'll scare you silly. Don Knotts in The Ghost and Mr.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Chicken in Technicolor.
- 27:51Speaker 1: And you're a chicken if you miss this movie.
- 27:54Speaker 15: Want some music for your ears? Doo-Wop Shop makes it
- 27:57Speaker 15: easy to rent for any event, business meeting, or special occasion.
- 28:00Speaker 15: From PA systems to karaoke machines to just about anything
- 28:03Speaker 15: that makes noise, you can rent it from the Doo-Wop Shop.
- 28:06Speaker 15: In Louisville, find them either at their Highland store at
- 28:08Speaker 15: 1587 Bardstown Road or in the East End at 2915

- 28:17Speaker 15: Doo-Wop Shop. We're serious about music.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Hi, this is Lance Edgerton, and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Listen if you dare.
- 28:49Speaker 5: It's part of.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Your problem, you know. You haven't seen enough movies.
- 28:52Speaker 3: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
- 28:56Speaker 1: And now, on with the show.
- 29:26Speaker 10: The crypt doors creak and the tombstones quake.
- 29:29Speaker 7: Spooks come out for a swinging wake.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Happy haunts materialize.
- 29:34Speaker 6: And begin to vocalize.
- 29:36Speaker 10: Grim gritty ghosts come out to socialize.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Now don't close your eyes and don't try to hide.
- 29:43Speaker 6: Or a silly spook may sit by your side.
- 29:47Speaker 3: Shrouded in a darkish hide.
- 29:51Speaker 7: They pretend to terrorize.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Grimly ghosts come out to socialize.
- 30:00Speaker 9: I think I have dog scratch.
- 30:05Speaker 7: Fever.
- 30:05Speaker 8: No, seriously.
- 30:06Speaker 5: You should see a dog.
- 30:06Speaker 8: You might.
- 30:07Speaker 9: No, seriously, like my dog jumped on my hand and
- 30:09Speaker 9: scratched me yesterday, and it took like a long time
- 30:12Speaker 9: to bleed, but now it's all like red and kind
- 30:13Speaker 9: of swollen.
- 30:14Speaker 5: And now you're like a bitching guitar player.
- 30:16Speaker 4: Yeah, dudes will not stand.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:20Speaker 12: When that full moon comes out, you start acting a
- 30:21Speaker 12: little squirrely.
- 30:23Speaker 5: Wait, how would we know the difference?
- 30:25Speaker 9: When the full moon comes out, I'm going to be like,
- 30:26Speaker 9: bring me my gun and my beef jerky.
- 30:31Speaker 5: All right, so we're back. Are you guys full from
- 30:34Speaker 5: all your marshmallow-covered hot dogs or?
- 30:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:38Speaker 5: Were there any fun alternate versions we came up with
- 30:42Speaker 5: that you wanted to share with people?
- 30:45Speaker 1: No.
- 30:46Speaker 9: The cheese ball and graham cracker thing was a good idea,
- 30:49Speaker 9: and it's quite tasty. It does taste like a cheesecake.
- 30:52Speaker 5: We sort of stole it from Michael, but we embellished
- 30:54Speaker 5: upon it.
- 30:55Speaker 8: And the cider and... Is that Chimbeam Fire? I hit
- 31:00Speaker 8: it right out of the park. That's pretty good.
- 31:01Speaker 5: I have coffee now.
- 31:04Speaker 10: And the vegan dog was pretty... It was... It was
- 31:07Speaker 10: somewhat like a hot dog.
- 31:08Speaker 8: Yeah, it's hard to find ones that are and that
- 31:11Speaker 8: you can do over a fire. Like most of them,
- 31:13Speaker 8: they just split apart. Right. But I started getting the
- 31:18Speaker 8: vegetarian Italian sausage, and that's really good for vegetarian BLTs.
- 31:25Speaker 8: You slice it up and pan fry it. It's super good. But, yeah.
- 31:30Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 31:31Speaker 5: All right, that's been the Halloween Food Minute. Now on
- 31:36Speaker 5: to the movie.
- 31:40Speaker 15: It's time for Sofa Theater.
- 31:45Speaker 9: We need to arrive at 4 p.m.
- 31:47Speaker 7: At Hollows Grove Orphanage.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Guys, this place was awful.
- 31:50Speaker 8: It became the place that time forgot. According to the
- 31:53Speaker 8: American Haunted House Association.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Number four. No. Number four.
- 31:56Speaker 5: Two.
- 31:57Speaker 9: Ooh.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Where are we going?
- 32:03Speaker 5: First to visit Bill.
- 32:04Speaker 8: Who's Bill?
- 32:05Speaker 1: Wow.
- 32:06Speaker 3: Jeez, what the hell?
- 32:09Speaker 9: Bill!
- 32:10Speaker 1: I got you.
- 32:11Speaker 5: Bill sets up gags for the show, you know, to
- 32:12Speaker 5: scare us.
- 32:13Speaker 3: Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 32:14Speaker 11: He rigged stuff?
- 32:15Speaker 7: Don't tell me you thought what.
- 32:16Speaker 10: We did was real.
- 32:18Speaker 5: Now, what a dump.
- 32:20Speaker 10: Are they arguing?
- 32:21Speaker 5: There's been incidents here. People have been hurt.
- 32:23Speaker 1: It's not safe.
- 32:24Speaker 7: But right now, that's up to us.
- 32:25Speaker 11: Comprende?
- 32:26Speaker 5: I said everything I have to say. I can't believe
- 32:29Speaker 5: that people just abandoned their kids here. Here we are
- 32:33Speaker 5: in the Hallow's Grove kitchen.
- 32:35Speaker 10: Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on. My freighter's going nuts.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Hello.
- 32:39Speaker 8: What is that?
- 32:44Speaker 1: You good?
- 32:44Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 32:45Speaker 5: Oh, Billy, God bless you, buddy. You guys, you got
- 32:49Speaker 5: to come feel this.
- 32:50Speaker 4: Oh, my God, it's freezing.
- 32:51Speaker 5: That's a real cold spot. Frame us up, okay?
- 32:53Speaker 10: Bill, set that up. Maybe that's not such a good idea.
- 32:57Speaker 2: You know, Harold's right.
- 32:58Speaker 7: Just check.
- 33:01Speaker 5: Who tied you up, Bill?
- 33:02Speaker 4: Wait, what happened?
- 33:04Speaker 1: Bill?
- 33:05Speaker 16: Shut the door!
- 33:06Speaker 1: Shut the door, Tim! What is that?
- 33:10Speaker 8: What is this?
- 33:12Speaker 9: That's Julie!
- 33:12Speaker 2: Julie, you don't want to go up there!
- 33:13Speaker 1: Julie!
- 33:14Speaker 9: Julie?
- 33:14Speaker 1: Julie!
- 33:17Speaker 5: Go!
- 33:22Speaker 7: Go with me, Tim!
- 33:25Speaker 1: Go! Go!
- 33:33Speaker 2: You always wanted proof.
- 33:36Speaker 5: This week's spooky silver theater feature, which you probably heard
- 33:40Speaker 5: something about if you were listening to last week's episode
- 33:41Speaker 5: because Marlena brought it up then. So we decided to
- 33:44Speaker 5: just go ahead and follow through and make it this
- 33:46Speaker 5: week's movie. So this week's feature is Hollow's Grove. The
- 33:51Speaker 5: year is 2014.
- 33:53Speaker 8: Seems like it was only just a year ago.
- 33:55Speaker 5: Doesn't it though?
- 33:57Speaker 10: Just yesterday.
- 33:58Speaker 5: The director is Craig Efros. And the plot, according to IMDb,
- 34:02Speaker 5: is a young filmmaker documents his ghost-hunting reality show friends
- 34:07Speaker 5: as their routine investigation of an abandoned orphanage turns into
- 34:10Speaker 5: a nightmare from which they can't escape. Spoiler alert!
- 34:14Speaker 7: Right, how do they not see that coming?
- 34:18Speaker 5: Do what?
- 34:18Speaker 7: I said, how do they not see that coming?
- 34:20Speaker 5: Yeah, if they would have read the plot, they would
- 34:22Speaker 5: have known it's a nightmare they can't escape.
- 34:23Speaker 8: Or if they, you know, read the book by fault. Lame.
- 34:27Speaker 5: Nobody reads books.
- 34:28Speaker 7: Read the book first.
- 34:30Speaker 5: So I think, um, right from the get go, we
- 34:34Speaker 5: know that nobody's really taking this very seriously because their
- 34:39Speaker 5: organization name is spit.
- 34:41Speaker 7: Spit.
- 34:42Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 34:43Speaker 5: So I'm like already, I'm like, okay, the people making
- 34:46Speaker 5: this movie aren't taking it seriously. Wasn't it like spiritual
- 34:49Speaker 5: and paranormal investigative team or something? Yeah. Just like, um,
- 34:56Speaker 5: all right.
- 34:57Speaker 8: The most serious trouble in it was like, uh, the
- 35:01Speaker 8: warehouse with all those props.
- 35:03Speaker 5: Yeah, that was awesome.
- 35:04Speaker 10: Where the fuck was that?
- 35:05Speaker 5: They probably just.
- 35:06Speaker 8: I was watching it and thinking, man, they went crazy
- 35:09Speaker 8: with this.
- 35:10Speaker 9: Wonderfulville, USA.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 35:13Speaker 7: It was definitely... They didn't pay for that.
- 35:14Speaker 10: They found that location.
- 35:16Speaker 5: It's probably just where they usually go get their props
- 35:18Speaker 5: and they're like, hey, can we use this? We'll buy
- 35:20Speaker 5: some more stuff from you in the future.
- 35:22Speaker 8: Right.
- 35:23Speaker 9: I like that the people in the movie didn't take
- 35:26Speaker 9: it seriously and that was the joke of the movie.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Like.
- 35:30Speaker 9: I mean, it wasn't a deep and meaningful joke, but
- 35:35Speaker 9: you know that paranormal investigators are the worst, most obnoxious
- 35:38Speaker 9: people on the planet, and they got that, and they
- 35:40Speaker 9: made fun of that.
- 35:41Speaker 5: Well, here's my question. Because I still feel like within
- 35:46Speaker 5: the plot itself, the characters are taking it seriously. It's
- 35:50Speaker 5: not like they're winking at the camera like, ha ha,
- 35:52Speaker 5: this is all bullshit. The plot still goes along as
- 35:56Speaker 5: though it's a real movie, and this is really, in
- 35:58Speaker 5: quotes here, taking place... Here's what I don't understand from
- 36:02Speaker 5: that perspective. Why would they want this to be made?
- 36:05Speaker 5: They're successful in their field at bullshitting people, and they're
- 36:10Speaker 5: very open within their friends that they're like, no, this
- 36:13Speaker 5: is all bullshit. This is showbiz, so... So why would
- 36:16Speaker 5: you want this idiot friend of yours filming it that's
- 36:19Speaker 5: going to totally cut the legs out of your career?
- 36:22Speaker 9: I don't think they thought that he was going to
- 36:24Speaker 9: really make it into a documentary. They were just kind
- 36:26Speaker 9: of humoring him.
- 36:27Speaker 5: Kind of, but still, would you want that shit out there? Like,
- 36:30Speaker 5: in the world of YouTube, you know, if it even
- 36:33Speaker 5: got out there, it's like, you're skating by on the bullshit,
- 36:36Speaker 5: you know, credibility that you have in a job like
- 36:38Speaker 5: that anyway.
- 36:39Speaker 7: You know, like, they didn't have a lot of heart
- 36:41Speaker 7: into it anyway. Their attitudes about it were like, Yeah,
- 36:45Speaker 7: this is what we're doing right now. So maybe if
- 36:47Speaker 7: they were sort of like, whatever, we'll figure out some
- 36:51Speaker 7: other bullshit job. That's really sad.
- 36:54Speaker 8: It just didn't seem like anybody was trying too hard
- 36:57Speaker 8: to work it all out.
- 36:58Speaker 5: Like from what? The people on the screen or people
- 37:01Speaker 5: behind the scenes?
- 37:02Speaker 8: Just anybody in the.
- 37:03Speaker 7: Entire universe of the movie.
- 37:07Speaker 8: Like if there was, I don't know, if I worked
- 37:11Speaker 8: at an orphanage where a lot of kids were sick
- 37:14Speaker 8: and so many dying, they couldn't keep track of them.
- 37:17Speaker 8: And one of them started getting stabby. You know, that
- 37:23Speaker 8: would be one that wouldn't make it.
- 37:27Speaker 5: You might find another job? Or you might just take
- 37:29Speaker 5: that kid out.
- 37:30Speaker 8: How does that just keep going on, this ongoing murderous seven-year-old?
- 37:35Speaker 5: They've got a lot of orphans. They need to get
- 37:37Speaker 5: rid of them. Dying regular causes is taking too damn long.
- 37:42Speaker 5: Get one of my knife. Put in a death shoot.
- 37:47Speaker 8: But I mean, you know, it makes for a good image.
- 37:50Speaker 8: Like a stabby seven-year-old is always disturbing.
- 37:52Speaker 5: Yeah, it's cheap.
- 37:53Speaker 7: It's an easy, pretty scary situation.
- 37:58Speaker 5: I mean, that's the thing. To not totally trash it.
- 38:01Speaker 5: I have many problems with it. But on the end,
- 38:05Speaker 5: I kind of like it because I think it does
- 38:07Speaker 5: what it set out to do. So it's really hard
- 38:10Speaker 5: to watch this movie in the same weekend that I
- 38:12Speaker 5: also watched Crimson Peak because I'm like, these are two
- 38:16Speaker 5: people coming from opposite ends. They're trying to tell the
- 38:18Speaker 5: same story. It's still a haunted house story, but it's
- 38:21Speaker 5: like one has millions and millions of dollars and top
- 38:23Speaker 5: quality acting. And the other one had like six guys
- 38:26Speaker 5: that they knew, like literally there's like a cast of
- 38:28Speaker 5: six and a building that they suckered somebody into letting
- 38:31Speaker 5: them use. So it's kind of hard to compare, but
- 38:34Speaker 5: it is like you, you, you see the comparison. Here's
- 38:37Speaker 5: how much work, you know, del Toro put into this
- 38:39Speaker 5: thing years and years of planning and prep and all
- 38:41Speaker 5: of this behind the scenes stuff and great actors. And
- 38:44Speaker 5: these guys show up and they're like, look, we just
- 38:45Speaker 5: want to make a cheap cinema verite found footage kind
- 38:50Speaker 5: of thing. We got a couple of friends, we got
- 38:53Speaker 5: an empty building and we want to do some creepy
- 38:55Speaker 5: effects and some jump scares. And that shit works. Like
- 38:57Speaker 5: by the end, I was like, every one of those
- 38:59Speaker 5: jump scares is effective. Like it happens every time. And
- 39:02Speaker 5: I'm like, damn that's still working it's kind of.
- 39:05Speaker 8: True at the same time it's it's it's true that
- 39:08Speaker 8: nobody was trying that hard but also you can see
- 39:10Speaker 8: they were trying really hard on the stuff they cared
- 39:13Speaker 8: about yeah to make a movie you know but they
- 39:16Speaker 8: just didn't have what you know like big filmmakers have
- 39:20Speaker 8: behind them in the way of resources and time to plan.
- 39:23Speaker 7: And again i thought they were pretty clever with that yeah.
- 39:26Speaker 5: Yeah i think there is a level of of up-and-coming
- 39:30Speaker 5: and indie filmmakers and some of them want to be
- 39:32Speaker 5: superstars and some of them just want to make especially
- 39:34Speaker 5: in horror there's a subsection of this is what i'm
- 39:37Speaker 5: making and like i think some of them are fine
- 39:40Speaker 5: making that they're like i don't want to write pages
- 39:42Speaker 5: and pages of character development i want a really good
- 39:45Speaker 5: jump scare I want to make this creepy effect that
- 39:48Speaker 5: really holds up and looks creepy. And that's what I
- 39:50Speaker 5: set out to do. And like, from that end, I
- 39:52Speaker 5: feel like they're successful.
- 39:53Speaker 7: I feel like horror too. Like the genre itself is
- 39:56Speaker 7: kind of for filmmaking. What like punk music is for music.
- 39:59Speaker 7: You know what I mean? It's like super accessible. It
- 40:01Speaker 7: like has such a broad stylistic idea that there's probably
- 40:05Speaker 7: a following for whatever style you want to make.
- 40:07Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 40:07Speaker 10: You know what I mean? And it's, it's fairly cheap
- 40:10Speaker 10: and easy.
- 40:11Speaker 7: So if you are just going to be a filmmaker, like,
- 40:13Speaker 7: a good start might be horror just because it's, like,
- 40:16Speaker 7: it doesn't really matter if you don't have a lot
- 40:17Speaker 7: of money.
- 40:17Speaker 5: It's easy to get into. And, yeah, you can do
- 40:19Speaker 5: it for pretty minimal, obviously.
- 40:21Speaker 9: I think the reason I like this movie so much
- 40:24Speaker 9: is because, like, it was so low budget. But, like,
- 40:27Speaker 9: the effects and, like, the jump scares were really good
- 40:31Speaker 9: for what it was. Like, I was legitimately startled and, like,
- 40:35Speaker 9: fearful at certain parts of the movie. Like, I was
- 40:37Speaker 9: surprised at certain scenes, you know, like. The first thing
- 40:41Speaker 9: that happens, not to give anything away, but the cat
- 40:44Speaker 9: hits the wall.
- 40:45Speaker 5: Yeah, that's pretty hardcore. What just happened?
- 40:48Speaker 7: That was pretty psychological, too, though. It was pretty smart
- 40:52Speaker 7: for that part.
- 40:53Speaker 5: That's the other thing I was going to give them.
- 40:55Speaker 5: I think it also goes to what type of audience
- 40:58Speaker 5: you're making your film for. I think this falls into
- 41:01Speaker 5: that category. Again, you're looking at a very high-end, crimson
- 41:05Speaker 5: peak kind of movie, and you're like, these are people
- 41:07Speaker 5: who want and who want actual character development, where these
- 41:11Speaker 5: guys don't care about that, and neither do their fan base.
- 41:14Speaker 5: I think this was like, because you're watching essentially a
- 41:18Speaker 5: bad ghost hunting show, it's just a fake ghost hunting,
- 41:21Speaker 5: but still you're watching the same douchebags that are in
- 41:23Speaker 5: your normal ghost hunting. So it's like it's a movie
- 41:27Speaker 5: made for people who are okay with watching bad ghost
- 41:29Speaker 5: hunting shows. You're pulling in that same fan base. So
- 41:33Speaker 5: from that angle, I was also going to give them like,
- 41:36Speaker 5: They also, because they're not shooting for that artsy high-end
- 41:38Speaker 5: version of it, they don't pull the bullshit version of
- 41:41Speaker 5: dragging it out and giving, like, we're going to be
- 41:44Speaker 5: super artsy and not show you anything. They, like, from
- 41:48Speaker 5: half hour in, ghosts. And you get shit happening. And
- 41:52Speaker 5: it's not like one of those, like, oh, we're going
- 41:53Speaker 5: to drag it out, we're going to drag it out.
- 41:54Speaker 5: In the last ten minutes, you'll see a little bit,
- 41:56Speaker 5: and that's it. And we want to be super artsy
- 41:58Speaker 5: about it. They're like, fuck that. We want stuff happening
- 42:00Speaker 5: the whole time.
- 42:01Speaker 12: It still had a pretty decent build, too.
- 42:03Speaker 5: It starts off, I mean, you get that first half
- 42:04Speaker 5: hour that is just them doing their annoying douchebag talking
- 42:08Speaker 5: back and forth and setting it up. They're pretty good
- 42:10Speaker 5: at the annoying douchebag. Yeah, it's one of those, you
- 42:12Speaker 5: have to hang in.
- 42:13Speaker 12: Like what kind of actors they were.
- 42:16Speaker 5: They might just be douchebags.
- 42:17Speaker 8: But it felt like Observed, like they knew douchebags.
- 42:20Speaker 9: Yeah, I was like, I can't wait for all these
- 42:22Speaker 9: guys to die.
- 42:23Speaker 5: It's kind of what you want. Again, that's a certain...
- 42:25Speaker 5: What pushed the.
- 42:26Speaker 8: Movie along more than, like if you watch a different
- 42:29Speaker 8: kind of horror movie, it's like, There's this thing that's
- 42:32Speaker 8: really kind of horrifying, and they build on that. Like,
- 42:35Speaker 8: for me, Babadook is just like, you know, when you're
- 42:38Speaker 8: around kids that drive you fucking insane. It's scary. It's
- 42:43Speaker 8: just scary how much you can.
- 42:45Speaker 7: It's a repulsive idea.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 42:46Speaker 5: See, but you throw out these other ones, and it
- 42:49Speaker 5: does kind of put it in perspective, because that's one that...
- 42:51Speaker 5: They didn't have a huge budget. They didn't even throw
- 42:54Speaker 5: a lot of effects in your face, but goddamn, that
- 42:56Speaker 5: movie's good and tense and scary and makes sense, and
- 42:59Speaker 5: the characters are well-developed.
- 43:00Speaker 9: So, I mean.
- 43:01Speaker 5: You see the other end and you're like, all right,
- 43:03Speaker 5: these guys weren't killing themselves trying to do that. But
- 43:06Speaker 5: that's the thing.
- 43:06Speaker 8: They weren't really developing the characters because they were developed enough.
- 43:11Speaker 7: That you just wanted to see what happened.
- 43:16Speaker 8: You want to see them get into a real situation
- 43:18Speaker 8: because they're so flippant about what they're doing.
- 43:21Speaker 5: Well, and again, I think it is still built on
- 43:23Speaker 5: that fan base of people who like to watch these
- 43:25Speaker 5: ghost hunting shows. And in those ghost hunting shows.
- 43:27Speaker 7: It's bullshit.
- 43:27Speaker 5: Nothing happens. And maybe it's, wait, did you hear that?
- 43:30Speaker 5: I heard something. And that's the most action you get
- 43:32Speaker 5: in an entire half hour, hour long show.
- 43:34Speaker 7: Being a really shitty actor is probably a pretty easy
- 43:36Speaker 7: acting job.
- 43:37Speaker 5: Yeah, well, in this sense, I don't know. Does that
- 43:41Speaker 5: make it worse?
- 43:42Speaker 8: Because there are some great scenes of really good actors
- 43:47Speaker 8: being terrible actors, like in Raging Bull, where he's doing
- 43:51Speaker 8: that thing into the mirror, and he's just so terrible.
- 43:53Speaker 8: It's like, God, he's so good at being so terrible.
- 43:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 43:58Speaker 9: I have a friend who's a really bad dancer, and
- 43:59Speaker 9: I can't even imitate how bad she is at dancing.
- 44:02Speaker 5: I think I've seen this in action. Oh, this is fascinating.
- 44:05Speaker 9: We've all tried to dance as bad as she dances,
- 44:07Speaker 9: and we can't even duplicate how bad it is.
- 44:10Speaker 5: I saw it years ago, and I'm still scarred.
- 44:12Speaker 7: I don't know how Steve Martin in The Jerk does
- 44:14Speaker 7: such a completely amazingly off rhythm. Yeah, but he's amazing.
- 44:18Speaker 5: He is amazing. This is fun amazing. Remember Elaine on Seinfeld?
- 44:24Speaker 9: My friend Diane doesn't even come Really?
- 44:27Speaker 1: No.
- 44:27Speaker 9: Wow. It is the worst thing I've ever seen.
- 44:30Speaker 5: Because Elaine's is controlled. Hers is out of control.
- 44:34Speaker 9: No, no, no. She's self-aware.
- 44:37Speaker 5: Or we've just made fun of her for years.
- 44:40Speaker 9: There's a video of it somewhere.
- 44:41Speaker 8: There's somebody in a local band whose significant other goes
- 44:45Speaker 8: to their shows and just does this horrifying dance thing.
- 44:50Speaker 7: That's awesome.
- 44:52Speaker 8: I know, it's beautiful. I was telling everybody about it,
- 44:56Speaker 8: like we're going to go to the show, and the
- 44:58Speaker 8: significant other didn't show up. And I'm like, well, the
- 45:00Speaker 8: band's still pretty good.
- 45:02Speaker 5: I guess we'll stay.
- 45:03Speaker 8: But we don't get to see this thing.
- 45:07Speaker 5: But no, that's my thing. It's like you watch those shows,
- 45:10Speaker 5: and you like that style of thing, and you're always hoping, oh,
- 45:13Speaker 5: this is the one, something's going to happen. It never does.
- 45:16Speaker 5: Where they were just like, okay, what if we just
- 45:17Speaker 5: go and make the movie? We're in control of the
- 45:19Speaker 5: special effects and this plot. We can make shit happen
- 45:22Speaker 5: the whole time.
- 45:22Speaker 10: And they might be just like, let's just get it done.
- 45:25Speaker 5: But they do. I was watching again. I went back
- 45:27Speaker 5: to watch and go, how early does it kick in?
- 45:29Speaker 5: It's at the half hour point. And from the half
- 45:32Speaker 5: hour point to the rest of the movie, it is
- 45:34Speaker 5: just continuing to build and get more and more ridiculous
- 45:37Speaker 5: and more... constant in your face look there's a thing
- 45:40Speaker 5: like at first it's just weird creepy stuff happening that
- 45:42Speaker 5: they don't see and then by like 40 45 minutes
- 45:46Speaker 5: in it's like okay now you're seeing it happen and
- 45:49Speaker 5: it's in your face it's not pretending it's not super
- 45:52Speaker 5: artsy it's just like this is the shit you want
- 45:54Speaker 5: to see when you're sitting at home watching that ghost
- 45:56Speaker 5: hunting show and they never deliver these guys made it
- 45:59Speaker 5: they deliver they come through for.
- 46:01Speaker 7: You I think like with the cat thing too like
- 46:03Speaker 7: you're watching it as an objective like viewer on different
- 46:06Speaker 7: levels and you're like well no matter what the effects
- 46:09Speaker 7: or the believability of it is, it's like, I can't understand,
- 46:11Speaker 7: you know, like, well, with the whole cat thing, you know,
- 46:13Speaker 7: they're like, usually they had their effects taken care of.
- 46:16Speaker 12: By Bishop, which was, I thought was a cool cameo,
- 46:19Speaker 12: by the way.
- 46:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:21Speaker 5: He owed somebody a favor. Well, I can only assume.
- 46:24Speaker 5: I mean, Lance Hendrickson is in tons. I mean, that's
- 46:28Speaker 5: the thing. Look at his IMDB. He's in everything.
- 46:31Speaker 7: Is he the kind of guy who just likes to
- 46:33Speaker 7: take whatever?
- 46:33Speaker 9: Is he the Samuel L.
- 46:35Speaker 7: Jackson?
- 46:36Speaker 5: He likes to work.
- 46:37Speaker 8: What was it, In the Blood?
- 46:40Speaker 5: Yeah, it's In the Blood. It's In the Blood. We've
- 46:42Speaker 5: had Lance on. He's a very nice guy. Do you
- 46:45Speaker 5: remember what show number?
- 46:48Speaker 1: 4,832.
- 46:48Speaker 5: Oh, it just feels like that at this point. You know,
- 46:51Speaker 5: it's really pretty.
- 46:52Speaker 8: Easy to look up the episodes of this show. Like,
- 46:55Speaker 8: if there's one you remember something about, you can just
- 46:58Speaker 8: Google it and it comes out.
- 46:59Speaker 5: Because some idiot sits there and puts every stupid thing
- 47:01Speaker 5: we talk about in the description. That's kind of become
- 47:04Speaker 5: one of my favorite things. The ridiculous things we say,
- 47:07Speaker 5: I keep cataloging.
- 47:09Speaker 8: If you just remember something odd, oh, I want to
- 47:11Speaker 8: check that out, or there was a movie... that I,
- 47:14Speaker 8: you know, thought was good and I forgot about it,
- 47:17Speaker 8: it's pretty easy to look them up on the show.
- 47:19Speaker 5: You heard that, guys.
- 47:19Speaker 7: Sometimes half the fun is just reading those things.
- 47:22Speaker 5: That's what, it just kind of started from the beginning.
- 47:25Speaker 5: I just started kind of listing on. We talked about
- 47:27Speaker 5: this movie. We talked about this actor. And then it
- 47:29Speaker 5: got like, we get more and more ridiculous as we
- 47:31Speaker 5: go on, obviously. And so I was just like, sometimes
- 47:34Speaker 5: I just started writing down, wait, did we really just
- 47:36Speaker 5: say this sentence?
- 47:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:37Speaker 5: And so there's one that becomes the quote anyway. And
- 47:39Speaker 5: then on top of that, it's just like 40 or
- 47:41Speaker 5: 50 other things. And I'm just like, how did we
- 47:43Speaker 5: connect this thing with this thing? Do you guys.
- 47:46Speaker 7: Remember playing that game when you were a kid? Being like,
- 47:48Speaker 7: how did I get to this thought?
- 47:50Speaker 8: It's like that James Joyce stream of consciousness technique. So
- 47:54Speaker 8: one day, filmmakers are going to take all those summarized
- 47:59Speaker 8: episodes and make some sort of creeptastic movie where some
- 48:03Speaker 8: old creepy guy It's me. I'm that creepy guy. And
- 48:06Speaker 8: I'll still.
- 48:15Speaker 9: Remember the forecastle guy who used to piggyback off of
- 48:17Speaker 9: your art shows?
- 48:19Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 48:20Speaker 5: What's up with that, by the way? Remember how that went?
- 48:23Speaker 5: Now he owns half the city and gets to do
- 48:26Speaker 5: whatever the hell he wants. Anyway.
- 48:29Speaker 7: Can I jump in on this? The last movie I
- 48:32Speaker 7: showed at the gallery was Willow Creek, which was also reality.
- 48:36Speaker 12: sort of based or count footage based.
- 48:38Speaker 5: We need to get back to those. Again, I don't
- 48:40Speaker 5: think you've been on board because we have a whole series.
- 48:44Speaker 5: That is kind of creepy. You might have a werewolf friend.
- 48:54Speaker 5: But yeah, we have a whole series of cryptid themed
- 48:58Speaker 5: movies and episodes that go along with them.
- 49:00Speaker 7: All of a sudden the listener just hears this horrifying
- 49:03Speaker 7: monster and all of us are screaming and That'd be great.
- 49:06Speaker 7: Pretty soon there's an FBI agent going, the following podcast
- 49:09Speaker 7: you're about.
- 49:09Speaker 10: To listen to.
- 49:10Speaker 9: Yes. Oh, the worst part was the end. The end
- 49:13Speaker 9: part with the FBI agent, that was terrible.
- 49:16Speaker 5: The post credits? Did you watch the post credits?
- 49:18Speaker 8: That was terrible, but also.
- 49:20Speaker 5: In the hospital? No, there's after the credits. Oh, you
- 49:25Speaker 5: missed out.
- 49:28Speaker 8: I mean, we can ruin it for you.
- 49:33Speaker 5: I mean, we already threw out the spoiler alert, so
- 49:35Speaker 5: if you want us to bust it out right now.
- 49:38Speaker 5: So basically, they all die except, what is her name?
- 49:43Speaker 8: The chick.
- 49:43Speaker 5: The one I feel bad for. The lady.
- 49:44Speaker 8: The chick.
- 49:45Speaker 5: I wrote them down.
- 49:46Speaker 8: Hold on. I forgot all their names.
- 49:49Speaker 5: I wrote it down because I didn't remember any of them.
- 49:51Speaker 8: I did remember their names for a while during the movie.
- 49:54Speaker 1: Julie.
- 49:55Speaker 5: Julie, who I decided very quickly is the babysitter of
- 49:58Speaker 5: the bunch. She's the only one I feel bad for because.
- 50:02Speaker 7: She seems like a decent person.
- 50:03Speaker 5: Everybody else are kind of douchebags.
- 50:05Speaker 8: I thought the lead douchebag was probably an okay guy.
- 50:08Speaker 7: He's the least douchey, yeah.
- 50:10Speaker 5: He's the least douchey, I guess, of the bunch.
- 50:13Speaker 8: He's douchey, but it just seemed like he didn't start
- 50:16Speaker 8: the douchey thing.
- 50:17Speaker 7: Are you talking about the.
- 50:18Speaker 8: But he did ignite it when he tried to find
- 50:20Speaker 8: the glasses.
- 50:21Speaker 5: No, he's a jackass. No, not the glasses either.
- 50:24Speaker 8: The blonde guy.
- 50:25Speaker 5: The Serbian one. He was the most normal one.
- 50:29Speaker 8: He didn't sound Serbian.
- 50:30Speaker 5: No, not really. He just seemed like he was from California.
- 50:35Speaker 5: That's just me.
- 50:37Speaker 8: What was the name of the guy? Was it Chad
- 50:40Speaker 8: making the... What was the name of the guy making
- 50:42Speaker 8: the documentary?
- 50:45Speaker 5: Hold on. I had to make... Should I bust out
- 50:47Speaker 5: my comments? Because my comment's about him. Hold on.
- 50:50Speaker 9: Oh, the other day, someone handed me their credit card
- 50:53Speaker 9: to run at work, and his name was Chad Broski.
- 50:58Speaker 8: What a douchebag. Oh, that's great. And he was a.
- 51:00Speaker 9: Super handsome gay man. He didn't look like a Chad
- 51:03Speaker 9: Broski at all.
- 51:04Speaker 5: Oh, that's a shame. I was like, that's the worst
- 51:05Speaker 5: name ever. So the cameraman is Harold. And that was
- 51:09Speaker 5: one of the few, because other than that, like, I
- 51:12Speaker 5: was like, yes, they're all being very douchey on screen,
- 51:15Speaker 5: but I'm like, the performances are all right. Like, I
- 51:17Speaker 5: don't hate any of them as actors. They're just doing that.
- 51:21Speaker 5: But that's the thing. By the end of the movie,
- 51:23Speaker 5: I was like, oh, thank God he was off screen
- 51:26Speaker 5: most of the time. Because that few minutes where he
- 51:29Speaker 5: drops the camera and gets in front of, he is terrible.
- 51:32Speaker 8: He's amazingly terrible. But part of it was the writing.
- 51:35Speaker 8: If they did write it or just made him improvise it,
- 51:38Speaker 8: I don't know. Like the part where they get to
- 51:40Speaker 8: the end and everybody is apparently dead. Maybe they're not
- 51:44Speaker 8: all dead, but it seems like they're all dead. And
- 51:49Speaker 8: what was the line he said?
- 51:50Speaker 5: He's like, it's like he's reading.
- 51:51Speaker 8: And now somebody's calling my name.
- 51:53Speaker 5: That was the one. I was like, I need to
- 51:55Speaker 5: write this down because I'm like, are you reading the
- 51:57Speaker 5: stage direction? Now you hear someone call your name. Wait,
- 52:01Speaker 5: someone is calling my name.
- 52:02Speaker 8: And everybody's dying.
- 52:04Speaker 5: And now somebody's calling my name. Wait, what is my
- 52:07Speaker 5: character's name again?
- 52:09Speaker 11: Oh, no, he's making fun of Odd Future.
- 52:16Speaker 17: And he's talking about their song where the chorus is like,
- 52:20Speaker 17: kill people, burn.
- 52:22Speaker 11: Shit, fuck school. And he's like, well, killing people, that's
- 52:27Speaker 11: just wrong.
- 52:28Speaker 7: I think it's buy shit.
- 52:29Speaker 10: Kill people, buy shit, fuck school.
- 52:31Speaker 8: Is it?
- 52:31Speaker 7: Yeah, buy shit.
- 52:33Speaker 8: But it is kill people.
- 52:35Speaker 11: Anyway, his joke is burn shit is what he says.
- 52:39Speaker 10: I know that for sure.
- 52:42Speaker 11: And he's like, burn shit, well, it depends on what
- 52:44Speaker 11: you're burning. If it's a controlled fire, whatever.
- 52:47Speaker 8: Like we have here.
- 52:48Speaker 11: And then fuck school. I mean, that's just truancy.
- 52:55Speaker 7: I mean, because the guy was like 19 years old
- 52:58Speaker 7: when he made the rap song.
- 53:01Speaker 11: I mean, like, I'm not trying to defend Hannibal Hurst.
- 53:03Speaker 11: He's a funny fucking guy. And, you know, I can't
- 53:06Speaker 11: hate on him for that.
- 53:08Speaker 9: The point is, it gets lesser in severity. It's just like,
- 53:12Speaker 9: kill people, fuck school. You know, it's just like... Kill people,
- 53:15Speaker 9: but it builds.
- 53:18Speaker 8: It builds towards the lesser offense.
- 53:21Speaker 5: Yeah. It seems like it should go the other way.
- 53:23Speaker 9: It's like, cut school today.
- 53:25Speaker 5: Don't return my library books. Then kill people.
- 53:27Speaker 7: Because it's written by a teenager, so he's like, the
- 53:29Speaker 7: worst fucking ever is school. I mean, kill people, yeah, whatever, buy.
- 53:33Speaker 8: Shit, but fuck school.
- 53:34Speaker 9: That makes sense from that perspective, but just like, you've
- 53:39Speaker 9: seen people levitate, and all of your friends are dead.
- 53:43Speaker 9: And now you're like super confused.
- 53:45Speaker 5: Somebody's calling my name. Somebody's calling my name.
- 53:48Speaker 9: Are there going to be orbs?
- 53:52Speaker 5: Look at these round orbs. It's just the fact that
- 53:55Speaker 5: he was describing the thing that was going on. Not
- 53:57Speaker 5: so much reacting to it, but narrating for us because
- 54:00Speaker 5: he still thinks he's holding the camera. I don't know.
- 54:03Speaker 5: You didn't know you're in front of it. You can
- 54:05Speaker 5: just do acting now. Yeah, that was delicious. I mean,
- 54:08Speaker 5: that was the one time I was like, oh, thank
- 54:10Speaker 5: God we didn't have to watch him do this the
- 54:11Speaker 5: entire movie. Because painful it was.
- 54:15Speaker 8: One of the first things we ever saw at Actors Theater,
- 54:17Speaker 8: when we moved here, we thought, oh, Actors Theater is
- 54:20Speaker 8: world famous. We'll go see it. And we saw this
- 54:24Speaker 8: thing of Treasure Island. And it's that thing where they
- 54:27Speaker 8: get really excited about building sets. But the play describes
- 54:33Speaker 8: every fucking thing. In the world.
- 54:35Speaker 5: I mean, that kind of is his writing style, too. Yeah,
- 54:38Speaker 5: it is. What little I did read, I remember he
- 54:40Speaker 5: spent three pages about just, like, the crew member's jacket.
- 54:44Speaker 8: Yeah, and it was all in the dialogue of the script. Yeah.
- 54:47Speaker 8: And yet, then they built it all. All the costumes,
- 54:51Speaker 8: all the sets, and they didn't look like the things
- 54:54Speaker 8: that the actors were saying. And it's like, wow, this
- 54:57Speaker 8: is like, this is like when you get pulled over
- 55:01Speaker 8: by a cop and you make up two different lies
- 55:04Speaker 8: simultaneously so he can pick the one he likes better.
- 55:09Speaker 5: My house is on fire and my wife's pregnant. So
- 55:12Speaker 5: I've got to go two places right now. If you
- 55:14Speaker 5: could let me go. I've got stuff to do.
- 55:17Speaker 8: As you can see.
- 55:18Speaker 5: And now somebody's calling my name.
- 55:20Speaker 10: And now she's calling my name.
- 55:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:28Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 55:29Speaker 8: I watched this movie, and I started thinking about, well,
- 55:31Speaker 8: what if I knew the people that made this movie?
- 55:34Speaker 8: What would I say? Like, if I was, oh, yeah,
- 55:37Speaker 8: I saw your movie. You know, that kind of awkwardness.
- 55:40Speaker 5: We get ourselves into that situation now.
- 55:43Speaker 8: I do.
- 55:43Speaker 9: You would just press your breasts up against them.
- 55:46Speaker 10: Like I do.
- 55:47Speaker 9: Phoebe. Phoebe Buffay style.
- 55:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:50Speaker 5: I can't say a word. If it was Phoebe Buffay,
- 55:53Speaker 5: that's a different story.
- 55:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:54Speaker 8: But then I thought, after I thought of that, I thought, oh, well,
- 55:57Speaker 8: what if I made this movie and my friends had to, like,
- 55:59Speaker 8: talk to me about it? Because that's really a lot
- 56:02Speaker 8: more like my life.
- 56:06Speaker 5: But I don't know.
- 56:07Speaker 8: Why is that so awkward? It's like, it is pretty good.
- 56:11Speaker 8: I mean, they made some effort. It's effective.
- 56:12Speaker 5: It really is. Like, everything they set out to do,
- 56:14Speaker 5: they do pretty well.
- 56:15Speaker 10: And yet at the same time.
- 56:16Speaker 8: There's stuff in it you just have to laugh at.
- 56:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 56:19Speaker 9: I don't know.
- 56:20Speaker 5: And there's some weird uneven stuff, like the guy with
- 56:23Speaker 5: the glasses that lives most of the way through, but
- 56:28Speaker 5: people start literally dying. We see Julie go out a window,
- 56:33Speaker 5: and he seems oddly calm with that. He's just like, well, yeah,
- 56:37Speaker 5: now we gotta go downstairs. And the other guy's freaking out.
- 56:40Speaker 5: He just watched his friend jump out of a window,
- 56:41Speaker 5: and he's like, oh, well, we gotta go. And he
- 56:43Speaker 5: just seems not disturbed at all by watching that.
- 56:45Speaker 7: That guy doesn't really lose his shit because he thinks
- 56:47Speaker 7: it's Bishop the whole time or whatever the guy's name is.
- 56:50Speaker 8: I thought they could have played with that and had
- 56:52Speaker 8: Bishop actually do a few things.
- 56:54Speaker 5: But he'd only signed up for that two hour span
- 56:57Speaker 5: of time.
- 56:57Speaker 8: That's what I call.
- 56:58Speaker 5: He's not going to.
- 57:00Speaker 8: This is all I'm doing. This is what you get.
- 57:02Speaker 5: He's like, I'm going to show up at your warehouse
- 57:04Speaker 5: that you suckered in and let you shoot at. And
- 57:06Speaker 5: then I'll come for about a half hour and do
- 57:08Speaker 5: that effect with the next thing that you want to do.
- 57:10Speaker 5: And that's what I got things to do, man.
- 57:11Speaker 7: That was the big problem I had with that particular
- 57:13Speaker 7: performance was he was like, none of this is scaring
- 57:16Speaker 7: me because I know it's homeboy. And then when it's not,
- 57:19Speaker 7: he just totally loses his shit.
- 57:22Speaker 5: Because then the next... The caretaker guy's hanging there, and
- 57:26Speaker 5: he doesn't care. He seems totally okay with.
- 57:28Speaker 8: That, too.
- 57:29Speaker 5: But when his friend dies, like the next guy dies,
- 57:31Speaker 5: he loses it. He's on the floor weeping at that point.
- 57:34Speaker 5: I'm like, what about the rest of the dead people
- 57:36Speaker 5: you just saw?
- 57:37Speaker 8: I was okay with the caretaker. I mean, what kind
- 57:39Speaker 8: of fucking job is that? You're a caretaker of a
- 57:41Speaker 8: place you don't even go in.
- 57:44Speaker 5: You might as well hang yourself, man.
- 57:46Speaker 8: What the fuck are you doing with your life?
- 57:48Speaker 10: Quit that job. Yeah, I know.
- 57:51Speaker 5: Well, 22 years in, I guess, you know, why bother?
- 57:54Speaker 8: Caretaker for 22 years.
- 57:57Speaker 7: I don't know much of much else.
- 58:00Speaker 5: Just shoot people when they go in. I mean, that
- 58:02Speaker 5: used to be the deal with the.
- 58:04Speaker 7: Try to tell the ghost hunters not to go in
- 58:05Speaker 7: there and... That used to be the Waverly thing. I
- 58:08Speaker 7: thought they could have.
- 58:08Speaker 8: Got a little bit more clever, didn't the two guys
- 58:12Speaker 8: just bleed to death on the floor? I mean, you
- 58:14Speaker 8: could do a little more than that.
- 58:16Speaker 12: But maybe they were like, oh, they couldn't afford the effects.
- 58:19Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 58:20Speaker 5: The one that was pretty, I think it was not,
- 58:23Speaker 5: I don't know that it was impressive. Like, if I
- 58:24Speaker 5: go back and watch it, technically, I don't know how
- 58:26Speaker 5: impressive it is. I think it's just because you didn't
- 58:28Speaker 5: see it coming when Julie floats in the freaking air.
- 58:30Speaker 5: I was just like, wait, is that, what is.
- 58:33Speaker 8: what i thought that was pretty cool yeah and she
- 58:36Speaker 8: was like scary it you couldn't quite see it but
- 58:39Speaker 8: it looked like her face transformed and the way she
- 58:42Speaker 8: moved was different.
- 58:43Speaker 5: Totally messed up animally and yeah that i gave him
- 58:47Speaker 5: credit for because he did not see that coming like
- 58:49Speaker 5: the rest of the stuff she's gonna and then the
- 58:51Speaker 5: guy you know whatever but like that one was cool and.
- 58:54Speaker 8: You didn't see it happening take that much necessarily to
- 58:58Speaker 8: be really scary it was just she moved in a
- 59:00Speaker 8: different way that reminded me a little bit of like
- 59:04Speaker 8: how Napoleon Dynamite would like go up the stairs in
- 59:08Speaker 8: school and sort of lead with his head. It was
- 59:11Speaker 8: just something weird and I don't know if it's like
- 59:16Speaker 8: a badger or some sort of creature.
- 59:19Speaker 12: Yeah, she charged up the stairs.
- 59:21Speaker 10: She was pretty scary.
- 59:24Speaker 5: That was kind of one of the best parts. Actually,
- 59:26Speaker 5: I think that the easter egg doesn't because we got
- 59:29Speaker 5: sidetracked on the easter egg it doesn't really because then
- 59:32Speaker 5: it comes back to that still kind of i don't
- 59:35Speaker 5: understand the throwing her out the window thing if she's
- 59:37Speaker 5: going to be the one that survives quotation marks there
- 59:40Speaker 5: but so yeah for you who didn't just stay through
- 59:43Speaker 5: the end of the credits they i guess it's her
- 59:45Speaker 5: husband boyfriend whatever comes into the hospital room and is
- 59:49Speaker 5: recording and she's all laid up which by the way
- 59:52Speaker 5: isn't that kind of tacky like if you're Wife or
- 59:55Speaker 5: girlfriend's almost dead and you're going, hey, shooting some video.
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: How's it going, honey? She's unconscious and he's, hey, what's up?
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: I'm just like, that's kind of tacky, but whatever.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess.
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: Maybe he's thinking ahead.
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: He's like, she's going to die someday. I got to
- 1:00:12Speaker 7: have some kind of footage.
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: I think it was the other way. He's like, she's
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: going to wake up. She's going to think this is hilarious.
- 1:00:17Speaker 8: Or like in the beginning where they're driving along. It's like, oh,
- 1:00:20Speaker 8: the camera's on.
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I was like, this is your cameraman?
- 1:00:24Speaker 8: I've been taking an accidental selfie all this time.
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: That's what I was like. Again, that's kind of why
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: I hate found footage stuff, because they come up with
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: the most bullshit reasons to have the camera on at
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: times when I guess you have to have the camera
- 1:00:34Speaker 5: on for the plot to move along. But that was
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: one of those. I was just like, this is your
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: cameraman that you've chosen to be shooting your documentary, and
- 1:00:42Speaker 5: he doesn't know how to work a camera.
- 1:00:44Speaker 8: It's like when they did The Office, the USA version,
- 1:00:47Speaker 8: and it's like, how long does this documentary crew live
- 1:00:52Speaker 8: in this fucking building? What are they making? And everybody
- 1:00:57Speaker 8: just forgot. Eventually, everybody just forgot that it was supposed
- 1:01:02Speaker 8: to be a documentary. And they would just look at
- 1:01:04Speaker 8: the camera like, yeah, we work in an office where
- 1:01:07Speaker 8: people film shit.
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: They kind of tied all those loose ends up, or
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: they tried to in the final season.
- 1:01:15Speaker 8: Yeah, it got pretty strained, though.
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: Well, they tried to sort of explain why the documentary
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: crew was there for 12 years or whatever.
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: Because we were getting ratings. We had commercials coming in.
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: That's why.
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: They didn't do a great job of it, but they
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: did try to explain all that stuff entirely.
- 1:01:36Speaker 10: Well, should we spoil it?
- 1:01:37Speaker 5: I threw the spoiler alert out. So anyway, we got sidetracked.
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: The boyfriend comes in. He's like, hey, how's it going?
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: She's unconscious. The FBI guy said she's the only one
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: that survived, but she's in a coma. She may never
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: wake up. So he's in there shooting footage of her,
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: and then we all know what's coming. She's sitting there
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: not responding to anything, and then suddenly she snaps up,
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: and she has monster face, and she roars at the camera,
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: and That's pretty much your... Cut to black. Yeah, that's
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: your cutaway in.
- 1:02:06Speaker 7: This is my favorite part. The credits come in and
- 1:02:10Speaker 7: it's like this new metal butt rock. I'm like, is
- 1:02:13Speaker 7: this a requirement for our movies now?
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: No, it's the kind of songs that those guys would
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: listen to. They're douchebags, so they would listen to that soundtrack.
- 1:02:21Speaker 7: It just kind of made me shake my head in dismay.
- 1:02:25Speaker 9: I met the worst group of new metal douchebags the
- 1:02:28Speaker 9: other day.
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: Were they shooting a pretend horror movie?
- 1:02:31Speaker 9: You would think. You would think they were ghost hunters
- 1:02:33Speaker 9: or something. So they came to work and sat at
- 1:02:36Speaker 9: the bar and Matt took a picture of them.
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: We're getting out the camera.
- 1:02:43Speaker 8: Hold on.
- 1:02:43Speaker 9: You can barely tell how douchey they were, but they
- 1:02:47Speaker 9: were like.
- 1:02:48Speaker 8: You can barely tell how douchey they were.
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: You can feel the douchiness coming through the screen.
- 1:02:53Speaker 9: He had a bald mohawk. And like eyebrow rings and
- 1:02:58Speaker 9: skull rings on every finger. There's a guy out.
- 1:03:01Speaker 7: There listening right now with all that stuff and he's.
- 1:03:02Speaker 10: Like, you guys are lame.
- 1:03:05Speaker 9: One of the guys was like, I gave him utensils
- 1:03:08Speaker 9: and he chose to use his fucking pocket knife and
- 1:03:11Speaker 9: I'm like, who are you?
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: What is wrong with you? You're so cool.
- 1:03:15Speaker 9: They were horrible. You gotta make them bigger.
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: I mean, that's as big as it gets.
- 1:03:21Speaker 8: Projected on the wall.
- 1:03:22Speaker 9: Oh, I can see them.
- 1:03:25Speaker 8: Oh, yeah. One of them looks like a Lego. Is
- 1:03:28Speaker 8: that guy a Lego?
- 1:03:29Speaker 10: He might be.
- 1:03:30Speaker 8: It looks like a Lego head.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: It does.
- 1:03:32Speaker 8: That's amazing.
- 1:03:34Speaker 9: They were the worst people I've ever encountered. It was
- 1:03:38Speaker 9: hard to not laugh directly in their face. It was
- 1:03:41Speaker 9: so hard for me. Oh.
- 1:03:44Speaker 8: It is a Lego.
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: Nice.
- 1:03:46Speaker 7: I was right. It looks like they're not going halfway
- 1:03:48Speaker 7: with it. You know, I got to at least.
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: Give you credit for that. They had the douchebag checklist
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: before they left the house. They went, yep, yep, yep,
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: we are good.
- 1:03:56Speaker 9: Like wallet chain, eyebrow rings, like bald person mohawk.
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: Oh.
- 1:04:03Speaker 9: Affliction shirt with like flaming crosses and skulls and like.
- 1:04:08Speaker 12: Black acid wash jeans like whatever was left of acid.
- 1:04:11Speaker 10: Wash or whatever.
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: You know back in my day there used to be
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: a guy that walked around New Albany with the King
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: Diamond makeup on.
- 1:04:19Speaker 8: Lovely.
- 1:04:20Speaker 7: Was his name Jason?
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: Maybe.
- 1:04:22Speaker 8: It's very possible.
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: Are you going to tell us you dated him?
- 1:04:25Speaker 9: Are we going to talk about Metal Man? Is it
- 1:04:29Speaker 9: Metal Man? Slayer guy?
- 1:04:31Speaker 15: Yes.
- 1:04:31Speaker 9: There used to be this guy. He went to school
- 1:04:33Speaker 9: with philip actually oh god like stalked bill for years
- 1:04:37Speaker 9: but he worked at meyer and like he used to
- 1:04:39Speaker 9: just hang around the mall and he'd be like hey
- 1:04:41Speaker 9: want to come to my truck and see my slayer
- 1:04:43Speaker 9: shirts and he's like literally asked everybody this not just me.
- 1:04:46Speaker 7: How many people took him up on it that's the
- 1:04:48Speaker 7: question no probably not a lot.
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: Did he have like did he have like a display
- 1:04:54Speaker 5: like did he pop the trunk and it like popped
- 1:04:56Speaker 5: out and had lights and shit yeah like if it rotated.
- 1:04:59Speaker 9: Like in his Early 30s, and he lived with his mom,
- 1:05:02Speaker 9: and she didn't approve of his devil music, so he
- 1:05:03Speaker 9: had to keep all his cool shirts on.
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: But if he had a cool Pimp My Ride thing
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: that popped out and displayed them all, I'd go check
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: them out. That'd be cool.
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: I totally would have looked at that dude's Slayer shirt collection.
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: As a person who has for most of my life
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: longed for an extensive Slayer shirt collection... That sounds heavenly.
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: Do you think he was dealing him? Could you have
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: made him an offer, or was he so attached?
- 1:05:28Speaker 11: He was terrifying but majestic at the same time.
- 1:05:32Speaker 10: I have so many stories.
- 1:05:33Speaker 7: It just goes on.
- 1:05:34Speaker 11: He is a local legend.
- 1:05:43Speaker 10: In his own right.
- 1:05:44Speaker 12: He's like, if there's a collector card series, he's like
- 1:05:46Speaker 12: the most.
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: He's the ultra rare chrome.
- 1:05:50Speaker 7: He's the hologram card.
- 1:05:51Speaker 10: Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:51Speaker 8: He is the Charizard of New Albany.
- 1:05:53Speaker 7: I'm that old. I think that's what it is.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:05:58Speaker 9: I mean.
- 1:06:00Speaker 9: Once in high school, he asked Philip, he's like, hey, Philip,
- 1:06:03Speaker 9: ever had sex with a dead body? And Philip was like, no,
- 1:06:05Speaker 9: that's gross. He goes, what's wrong with you? Like, how
- 1:06:11Speaker 9: dare you not enjoy having sex with dead bodies? Like,
- 1:06:15Speaker 9: he's never done that. He's never done anything even remotely
- 1:06:17Speaker 9: that cool in his life.
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: Depending on when you get them, it's all right.
- 1:06:21Speaker 10: Code blue.
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: You got to know which direction.
- 1:06:26Speaker 8: Never mind.
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: Anyway, so.
- 1:06:30Speaker 12: We got a little off track there.
- 1:06:33Speaker 7: What were you directing me away from Willow Creek about?
- 1:06:37Speaker 12: Was there another episode you talked about?
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: Oh, no.
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: I mean, we have a whole running cryptid thing, so
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: we can come back and do tons of Bigfoot episodes
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: somewhere down the line if you're up for it.
- 1:06:48Speaker 7: Tons of Bigfoot episodes.
- 1:06:50Speaker 9: All right.
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: Let's take this job and shove it down.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: I'm talking monster trucks here, not cryptids.
- 1:06:59Speaker 8: Monster trucks. I was going to say, I was trying
- 1:07:01Speaker 8: to remember.
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: I was trying to think if I was standing next
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: to that, but I did have my picture next to Gravedigger.
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: But that one has a cooler thing going, you know.
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: Bigfoot's just old school.
- 1:07:11Speaker 9: I forgot. Why aren't monster trucks a thing anymore?
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: Because the 80s are over. They're not?
- 1:07:19Speaker 10: They still are.
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: I mean, they still have them. Like, once a year,
- 1:07:22Speaker 5: they still do one of those here. What's going on?
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: I'm surprised you're not.
- 1:07:26Speaker 10: Have you been?
- 1:07:26Speaker 7: This is Kentucky.
- 1:07:28Speaker 12: They've got to be close. Texas had them pretty regularly.
- 1:07:31Speaker 8: State fairs, that's what's up.
- 1:07:33Speaker 10: Look for the state fair.
- 1:07:35Speaker 9: I've been to a tractor pool.
- 1:07:37Speaker 7: Demolition Derby is the fun one.
- 1:07:38Speaker 8: I would like to do a tractor taffy pool. You
- 1:07:41Speaker 8: just hook up taffy between tractors and pull it. I'm
- 1:07:47Speaker 8: just always trying to save a step. Just put two
- 1:07:49Speaker 8: things together that would solve a problem. Are there other
- 1:07:55Speaker 8: kinds of pulls? Those are the two I know. Tractor
- 1:07:58Speaker 8: pulls and taffy pulls.
- 1:08:00Speaker 10: Tooth pulls.
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: Yeah, one of those kids trying to, you know, it
- 1:08:03Speaker 5: used to be the old doorknob thing, but we could
- 1:08:05Speaker 5: take it up a notch, tie it to the back
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: of Bigfoot. I think that's the way to go.
- 1:08:09Speaker 7: Has anyone watched any other horror movies lately?
- 1:08:13Speaker 8: I saw The Babadook. I thought it was a pretty
- 1:08:17Speaker 8: good movie. But it was weird how, like, when she
- 1:08:21Speaker 8: went crazy, he got, like, He was all okay then.
- 1:08:25Speaker 5: Well, and that's why I have to give him credit.
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: It is one of the few movies, because I can't
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: imagine writing this or shooting this because it's impossible. It's
- 1:08:33Speaker 5: a movie that switches your perspective. You start off as
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: the mother and you're seeing how much this child drives
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: her crazy. And then as she gets crazy, you switch
- 1:08:44Speaker 5: to the kid's perspective and you start seeing how... overbearing
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: and crazy she's becoming and then how he has to
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: try to save her it's weird like I cannot imagine
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: writing that.
- 1:08:53Speaker 8: I can oddly enough I can imagine writing that I've
- 1:08:57Speaker 8: thought it's because you're losing your mind no it's because
- 1:09:00Speaker 8: it makes a kind of sense you know it does
- 1:09:02Speaker 8: it's brilliant this scary connection it is I didn't have
- 1:09:07Speaker 8: kids for a long time because it is scary it
- 1:09:09Speaker 8: is it's just fucking terrifying they're frightening I don't trust
- 1:09:12Speaker 8: them and then you know when you do they just
- 1:09:14Speaker 8: give you this baby and send you home with it
- 1:09:16Speaker 8: and it's like I'm not fucking qualified for this what
- 1:09:18Speaker 8: are you doing But then, you know, that terror, the
- 1:09:24Speaker 8: thing you start to realize is it just doesn't go away.
- 1:09:28Speaker 8: And you just settle in, buckle in for a life
- 1:09:31Speaker 8: of sheer terror. And it's like, oh, well, that's what
- 1:09:34Speaker 8: I've chosen. This is the life we've chosen. Yeah, it's horrifying.
- 1:09:41Speaker 8: And I think it's a powerful horror movie because it
- 1:09:44Speaker 8: ties into something that really is scary in real life.
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: A couple of things.
- 1:09:50Speaker 8: And I mean, you just so want to smack that
- 1:09:53Speaker 8: kid that it makes you scared of yourself.
- 1:09:57Speaker 5: I think that's why it's so effective. I think if
- 1:09:59Speaker 5: he was just kind of like, oh, but he's troubled
- 1:10:02Speaker 5: and you didn't feel like you have to be in
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: her mind and be like, oh my God, I would
- 1:10:05Speaker 5: kill that kid.
- 1:10:06Speaker 8: Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: You know, I'm a person that doesn't watch movies, and
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: even I've.
- 1:10:10Speaker 8: Seen this movie.
- 1:10:11Speaker 5: Because it's that damn good.
- 1:10:13Speaker 8: It's pretty good.
- 1:10:13Speaker 4: But I definitely thought the movie did not need any
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: sort of special effects of any kind. And when it
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: actually showed the Babadook, every time it completely took me
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: out of the experience. And I thought they should have
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: handled that, used more descriptive dialogue to kind of dance
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: around the fact that there were no special effects. I
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: think that would have been a lot more effective. Because
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: the movie was terrifying without actually... seeing the big black
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: massive monster. Every time I saw it, I was like, eh.
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: But the mother and child relationship was so much more
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: interesting than the actual Babadook. I don't actually care about
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: the monster.
- 1:10:51Speaker 8: That's my taste. I've grown toward real terror. But, I
- 1:10:58Speaker 8: don't know, I guess I still have a soft spot
- 1:11:00Speaker 8: for the old big theatrical horror movie, but it did
- 1:11:04Speaker 8: feel like sort of awkwardly welded together.
- 1:11:07Speaker 5: It was kind of straddling the line. It was like,
- 1:11:10Speaker 5: we want to do a psychological horror movie, but people
- 1:11:13Speaker 5: kind of want a monster. And I feel like, but
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: really by the time you get to the end, I
- 1:11:18Speaker 5: feel like it works because it actually is playing both sides.
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: It's like, okay, we're showing you the monster that you
- 1:11:25Speaker 5: want to see, but if you pay attention to what's
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: going on in the plot, you're still watching the same
- 1:11:30Speaker 5: psychological horror movie.
- 1:11:31Speaker 7: Was it CGI or was it practical?
- 1:11:33Speaker 5: I think a lot of what they were doing was practical.
- 1:11:35Speaker 8: Yeah, it wasn't that big.
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: It did feel weird.
- 1:11:38Speaker 7: You didn't need to be there.
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: That was the big problem.
- 1:11:41Speaker 17: I really could have done without the dog murder. I
- 1:11:44Speaker 17: have a dog that resembles that.
- 1:11:47Speaker 11: Dog a lot.
- 1:11:49Speaker 17: And I actually need to look away from that scene.
- 1:11:51Speaker 17: I felt like it was kind of a throwaway scene.
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: Well, I knew when we got to the book and
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: we got to that point, I was like, oh, shit.
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: I mean, you know it's coming then. It kind of
- 1:12:01Speaker 5: makes you.
- 1:12:01Speaker 7: do you think maybe they just really wanted to fuck
- 1:12:03Speaker 7: up the people that like care you know more about
- 1:12:06Speaker 7: dogs who own them all they're just like oh fuck
- 1:12:09Speaker 7: you guys it's not scary you own this kind of
- 1:12:12Speaker 7: dog I mean that is a taboo like you can
- 1:12:14Speaker 7: kill humans all you want but you don't mess with
- 1:12:17Speaker 7: the dog and the handful of movies that do like
- 1:12:19Speaker 7: we remember them.
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: So it did it did do that job it was
- 1:12:22Speaker 5: like it makes you uncomfortable.
- 1:12:24Speaker 11: I mean by that standard then Old Yeller would be
- 1:12:26Speaker 11: a horror movie.
- 1:12:27Speaker 7: As well it kind of is it kind of is
- 1:12:29Speaker 7: it's pretty scary it's pretty terrifying Yeah.
- 1:12:32Speaker 8: I'm obsessed with making a horror movie because it is
- 1:12:35Speaker 8: the most compelling thing that you think I could make.
- 1:12:39Speaker 8: A horror movie.
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: It is.
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: I said that recently on one of these when we
- 1:12:42Speaker 5: were sitting there. I think it was The Screaming Skull.
- 1:12:44Speaker 5: It was like, we can watch this kind of stuff
- 1:12:47Speaker 5: and be like, I can do that. You know, you
- 1:12:49Speaker 5: can watch a sci-fi epic and you're like, yeah, I
- 1:12:52Speaker 5: can't do that. Like, there's no humanly possible way.
- 1:12:54Speaker 8: Here's the thing. I think I can do everything.
- 1:12:56Speaker 7: Well, you're crazy. We've established that.
- 1:12:59Speaker 10: It's true.
- 1:12:59Speaker 7: As the kind of person who tends to start writing
- 1:13:02Speaker 7: a screenplay and then never, ever complete one and have
- 1:13:04Speaker 7: done it a lot of times in my life, I
- 1:13:07Speaker 7: think the majority of them have been horror movies.
- 1:13:10Speaker 5: It's an accessible goal. Or at least a possible goal.
- 1:13:13Speaker 12: It's the punk rock of intro movie genres.
- 1:13:17Speaker 5: It's something that you can do if you want to
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: follow through on it.
- 1:13:21Speaker 7: The real trick would be figuring out one that involves
- 1:13:24Speaker 7: no actors.
- 1:13:28Speaker 8: I'm almost there. It almost involves no filming. No, it does.
- 1:13:34Speaker 8: Almost no filming is involved in this movie.
- 1:13:40Speaker 9: Let's just set a camera on a table and yeah
- 1:13:42Speaker 9: see what happens but it but i still have to
- 1:13:45Speaker 9: have actors do it as a radio play and so
- 1:13:48Speaker 9: you watch just filming like a still shot of a place.
- 1:13:53Speaker 8: And then you hear yeah uh but i'm trying to
- 1:13:57Speaker 8: get it down to where that'll just be like i
- 1:14:00Speaker 8: don't know robots or something or i'll just like um
- 1:14:05Speaker 8: clip words from random people so no actors are actually involved.
- 1:14:09Speaker 8: It'll be like a ransom note.
- 1:14:12Speaker 5: But you're kind of getting artsy with it, too. By
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: the end of that, you're just like, it's almost a
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: little more highbrow.
- 1:14:18Speaker 12: It's kind of as artsy as you can get.
- 1:14:20Speaker 8: Well, I had a very elaborate idea how to do it,
- 1:14:23Speaker 8: and I tried to get a few people involved, and
- 1:14:25Speaker 8: it's like, oh, fuck this. Oh, fuck this. This is
- 1:14:29Speaker 8: never going to happen if I have to do it.
- 1:14:32Speaker 10: And it involves people.
- 1:14:35Speaker 9: Use different voices. Just you and different voices.
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: I've gotten to that point.
- 1:14:41Speaker 8: We'll see.
- 1:14:42Speaker 7: I like your idea of tricking people into saying the
- 1:14:45Speaker 7: dialogue that.
- 1:14:46Speaker 8: You want to capture.
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: That's all this show is. You know that, right? I
- 1:14:50Speaker 5: haven't posted these for years.
- 1:14:51Speaker 8: It's funny you say that because I have four or
- 1:14:55Speaker 8: five recordings of people in this little town and there's
- 1:14:58Speaker 8: this spooky building and you just hear me going, So
- 1:15:02Speaker 8: what's the story with that building across the street there?
- 1:15:06Speaker 8: Or what's the story with that building down there? And
- 1:15:09Speaker 8: they were like, oh, what I heard was that he
- 1:15:13Speaker 8: ran out of money. And it was only zoned to
- 1:15:16Speaker 8: be like a two-story building. But it's, you know, it's
- 1:15:19Speaker 8: three stories.
- 1:15:20Speaker 10: It's three stories.
- 1:15:22Speaker 8: So they shut him down. And now he's got, that
- 1:15:24Speaker 8: building's been there since, I don't know, since I was
- 1:15:26Speaker 8: six years old. He talks about closing it, but he'll
- 1:15:28Speaker 8: never hear that.
- 1:15:29Speaker 7: He's been talking about that for 40 years.
- 1:15:30Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:15:31Speaker 8: Exactly. Oh, and one day I was doing that, and
- 1:15:35Speaker 8: there was a drowned girl found about a block from
- 1:15:40Speaker 8: that building.
- 1:15:40Speaker 7: He talks about drowning that girl.
- 1:15:41Speaker 8: Yeah. And so they started going on to that, and
- 1:15:44Speaker 8: I'm like, how am I going to work this fucking
- 1:15:46Speaker 8: bullshit in?
- 1:15:48Speaker 10: Now I have to.
- 1:15:49Speaker 5: Now I have to drown the girl.
- 1:15:50Speaker 10: Damn it.
- 1:15:51Speaker 5: It's going to be a lot of trouble.
- 1:15:53Speaker 8: I didn't have a character for that.
- 1:15:55Speaker 12: Well, it wasn't going to be about a drowning girl,
- 1:15:56Speaker 12: but now it's totally about a drowning girl.
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: Now I have to drown a girl.
- 1:15:59Speaker 8: Actually, a lot of it is set in like a Walgreens,
- 1:16:01Speaker 8: CVS-type drugstore, and I got fascinated with that.
- 1:16:06Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 1:16:06Speaker 8: Everybody's been in that space, and it's such a weird space.
- 1:16:10Speaker 8: And also, it's just so full of aggressive, pretty faces.
- 1:16:15Speaker 8: If you look around, one of them, CVS, has a
- 1:16:17Speaker 8: thing on the wall that says, like, It's like a
- 1:16:20Speaker 8: hundred percent beauty guarantee, money back beauty guarantee.
- 1:16:25Speaker 7: And I'm like, what the fuck are you talking about?
- 1:16:28Speaker 8: What does anybody do? I don't know.
- 1:16:31Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:16:31Speaker 8: But the space is so strange. It's almost like a
- 1:16:34Speaker 8: Star Trek thing. Like I want to have like Spock
- 1:16:39Speaker 8: and Kirk come out and they're managing the drugstore. just
- 1:16:44Speaker 8: floating through space and a CBS.
- 1:16:46Speaker 10: I worked at a Walgreens for a while. Oh, did you?
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:16:50Speaker 7: I was just a, I, I trained as a photographer,
- 1:16:53Speaker 7: a photograph guy. Cause when I, whenever I'd visit, I'd
- 1:16:55Speaker 7: be like, all right, I'm going to drop an application.
- 1:16:57Speaker 7: But the only people that seemed like they could like
- 1:16:59Speaker 7: do whatever they wanted with their job were the photo people.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:17:02Speaker 7: Like they were like, they.
- 1:17:03Speaker 12: Had to do, they were doing stuff they didn't want
- 1:17:05Speaker 12: to do.
- 1:17:06Speaker 7: So I tried to do that, but they really just
- 1:17:08Speaker 7: needed a clerk when they were hiring for photo. So they,
- 1:17:11Speaker 7: I ended up being a clerk and I, here's the thing. I,
- 1:17:14Speaker 7: my shift would always end right when the overnight shift
- 1:17:17Speaker 7: would start. And the overnight shift was 10 hours. And
- 1:17:20Speaker 7: the people who worked overnight would do 10 days on
- 1:17:23Speaker 7: and then, or seven days on, they would do 70
- 1:17:25Speaker 7: hours in one week and then they'd have a whole
- 1:17:27Speaker 7: week off.
- 1:17:27Speaker 12: So they were like seven days a week, 10 hours
- 1:17:30Speaker 12: a day.
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: Weird.
- 1:17:31Speaker 7: Like, I mean, I, I befriended one of them and
- 1:17:37Speaker 7: she was like, whenever I want to go on vacation,
- 1:17:38Speaker 7: I can every other week. It's pretty amazing. But beyond that,
- 1:17:42Speaker 7: like the kind of people that stay in a Walgreens
- 1:17:44Speaker 7: for 10 hours overnight, like the sun's out there and
- 1:17:47Speaker 7: it's there when they leave.
- 1:17:48Speaker 8: It's like backward.
- 1:17:49Speaker 10: They're strange folks.
- 1:17:51Speaker 8: Yeah, you would be.
- 1:17:54Speaker 5: So this movie.
- 1:17:56Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: How would you, let's round it out. What are your
- 1:18:00Speaker 5: final thoughts on this?
- 1:18:02Speaker 17: Do you want to even make reference to any of
- 1:18:03Speaker 17: the possible Waverly references that they made?
- 1:18:07Speaker 5: There were several. I mean, mostly the death shoot.
- 1:18:10Speaker 7: I don't, does every, that's here in town?
- 1:18:12Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:18:12Speaker 5: Yeah. Does, I mean, does, does that part of the
- 1:18:17Speaker 5: story exist in other? Cause we've said before, every city
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: has every, yeah. Every town has a, has a weird hospital,
- 1:18:25Speaker 5: has a weird, you know, sanatorium somewhere that like this
- 1:18:28Speaker 5: goes on. So it's like, Do they all also tell
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: the Death Chute story? Because that's always been a Waverly thing.
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: I'm sure they do.
- 1:18:36Speaker 17: The one that stuck out the most to me was
- 1:18:38Speaker 17: when they were talking about the room where the nurses
- 1:18:40Speaker 17: threw themselves out the window. It's room 205, and if
- 1:18:44Speaker 17: you reverse that, it's 502, and that was supposedly the
- 1:18:47Speaker 17: mythology behind Waverly. where they had the nurses who hung
- 1:18:51Speaker 17: themselves and stuff. And that was what really stuck out
- 1:18:54Speaker 17: to me when I was watching it.
- 1:18:56Speaker 11: I was like, oh, well, they're just trying to steal.
- 1:18:58Speaker 5: Were there two? Was that the story Waverly told? There
- 1:19:01Speaker 5: were two?
- 1:19:03Speaker 8: In memory of the dead nurses.
- 1:19:07Speaker 10: 502 area code? Isn't that the area code? Yeah, it is.
- 1:19:10Speaker 5: That's why.
- 1:19:12Speaker 9: Well, I think.
- 1:19:13Speaker 11: It was definitely proved to be falsified.
- 1:19:15Speaker 17: That was a lie that somebody told.
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: People make up a lot of weird stories.
- 1:19:21Speaker 12: The room in Colorado was 719.
- 1:19:22Speaker 7: I don't know about that.
- 1:19:23Speaker 8: All the stories they have about the name Kentucky... It's
- 1:19:28Speaker 8: like dark and bloody ground. No, it really wasn't. And
- 1:19:32Speaker 8: then they say it's like land of... There are so
- 1:19:35Speaker 8: many stories about it that I'm sure it's a cover-up.
- 1:19:38Speaker 8: It's like land of tomorrow or land where we will
- 1:19:41Speaker 8: live tomorrow. I believe the Department of Commerce is covering up.
- 1:19:45Speaker 8: It really meant bad allergy zone.
- 1:19:49Speaker 5: Don't move here.
- 1:19:51Speaker 8: Or land where we will live tomorrow after somebody invents, like, Sudafed. Maybe.
- 1:19:59Speaker 8: And it's just this big cover-up because there's too many
- 1:20:02Speaker 8: stories of different things that it supposedly means and there's
- 1:20:06Speaker 8: no evidence of any of it.
- 1:20:07Speaker 9: Well, before Kentucky was settled, I mean, like, Native Americans
- 1:20:11Speaker 9: were just like, that place is a shithole.
- 1:20:13Speaker 5: We don't go there yeah because the valley it's really
- 1:20:16Speaker 5: humid let's move on and.
- 1:20:18Speaker 9: You know yeah before it was like cleared and settled
- 1:20:21Speaker 9: you know like people knew it was here yeah they
- 1:20:24Speaker 9: were just like the.
- 1:20:25Speaker 7: Flag says 1778 that's like pretty pretty far back there
- 1:20:29Speaker 7: right and somebody decided it was a good place to
- 1:20:30Speaker 7: be a long time ago yeah white man white people.
- 1:20:33Speaker 5: Stupid white people yeah Stupid white people.
- 1:20:37Speaker 10: It's raining.
- 1:20:37Speaker 7: He's like, isn't this great? I don't know.
- 1:20:41Speaker 10: It seems like.
- 1:20:42Speaker 9: I mean, if you come from England, it's like a paradise,
- 1:20:44Speaker 9: I guess.
- 1:20:45Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 1:20:46Speaker 7: Come on, guys. We used to be Brits.
- 1:20:48Speaker 8: The bugs.
- 1:20:51Speaker 9: Speaking of the movie.
- 1:20:53Speaker 11: There was a movie?
- 1:20:55Speaker 8: What was the name of that movie?
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: Hollow.
- 1:20:58Speaker 8: Hollow's Grove. Hollow's Grove. Or was it Hello's Grove?
- 1:21:02Speaker 5: No, Hollow's Grove. Because, yeah, I was trying to type
- 1:21:04Speaker 5: it in that way, too.
- 1:21:05Speaker 10: Oh, yeah.
- 1:21:07Speaker 8: The Australian release was Hallow's Grove.
- 1:21:09Speaker 7: Hallow's Grove.
- 1:21:11Speaker 8: And what was that guy's accent in it? He had
- 1:21:13Speaker 8: that Boston accent.
- 1:21:15Speaker 5: Which one?
- 1:21:16Speaker 8: The guy with the glasses.
- 1:21:18Speaker 5: I don't know what they were doing.
- 1:21:19Speaker 8: He kept saying weird things. Yeah.
- 1:21:21Speaker 7: I didn't catch that.
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 1:21:23Speaker 8: He kept saying some weird sounds.
- 1:21:27Speaker 5: So was that the only creepy similarities to the... the
- 1:21:31Speaker 5: big hospital, or do we have that hospital exist in
- 1:21:34Speaker 5: every town, or do we think it was specifically.
- 1:21:37Speaker 12: There was one of those in Pueblo.
- 1:21:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:21:38Speaker 7: There's a haunted mental.
- 1:21:40Speaker 12: Hospital in Pueblo.
- 1:21:41Speaker 9: I kind of want to explore that further, because Waverly
- 1:21:44Speaker 9: is one of the most famous, and I'm pretty sure
- 1:21:46Speaker 9: it probably has inspired legends.
- 1:21:49Speaker 5: In other places. And a couple of cheap movies.
- 1:21:51Speaker 9: But I wonder, you know, like Chicken or the Egg,
- 1:21:53Speaker 9: I wonder which one came first, if it started it
- 1:21:56Speaker 9: and inspired others, or.
- 1:21:58Speaker 7: Someone just made it up. There's not really a ghost
- 1:22:00Speaker 7: in any of these places.
- 1:22:02Speaker 8: I don't know, but Blair Witch really resonated with the
- 1:22:06Speaker 8: Bell Witch, which I remember as a kid. That was
- 1:22:10Speaker 8: a big thing when people started talking. And they said
- 1:22:13Speaker 8: that thing like you go at midnight in front of
- 1:22:16Speaker 8: a mirror and you say, I do not believe in
- 1:22:18Speaker 8: the Bell Witch. It just scratches your face. Uh-huh, you
- 1:22:22Speaker 8: wake up and your face is all scratched up. I
- 1:22:24Speaker 8: did it.
- 1:22:25Speaker 5: That explains your face.
- 1:22:28Speaker 8: Yeah, she never did that. Yeah, we had Bloody Mary, too.
- 1:22:32Speaker 5: It all just spirals off.
- 1:22:33Speaker 8: You could not get anybody to show up in Bowling Green.
- 1:22:36Speaker 8: I was like, maybe in the big cities this works.
- 1:22:40Speaker 8: But nobody's coming.
- 1:22:40Speaker 5: To Bowling Green. The Bell Witch does not want to
- 1:22:42Speaker 5: come to your ratty little town.
- 1:22:46Speaker 7: Like santa claus like yeah i can't make it down
- 1:22:48Speaker 7: there tonight guys.
- 1:22:49Speaker 5: I'll send one of my helpers i'll send my bell
- 1:22:53Speaker 5: witch helper it was kind of like.
- 1:22:55Speaker 8: I'd hear about these great horror movies and magazines and
- 1:22:58Speaker 8: they'd never come to my town and it's like well
- 1:23:01Speaker 8: it's probably the same with the bell witch you know.
- 1:23:05Speaker 5: She's in new york and la but we can't get her.
- 1:23:07Speaker 8: Out here if we go on vacation to florida or
- 1:23:09Speaker 8: something i can do it in a mirror in the
- 1:23:11Speaker 8: hotel room and.
- 1:23:12Speaker 7: But Maybe I'll get a little tiny bit.
- 1:23:14Speaker 8: Of a scratch.
- 1:23:15Speaker 5: Just a little cat scratch.
- 1:23:16Speaker 7: Nothing big.
- 1:23:17Speaker 8: You can't get scratched in this town.
- 1:23:21Speaker 7: You can't get a good scratch in Bowling Green or
- 1:23:23Speaker 7: anything anymore.
- 1:23:25Speaker 8: Yeah, this is actually like what my thought process was
- 1:23:29Speaker 8: when I was a kid.
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: That's frightening. Yeah. So, I don't know.
- 1:23:37Speaker 10: I don't know.
- 1:23:38Speaker 5: Overall, what is our takeaway with this movie? Because I
- 1:23:41Speaker 5: feel like there's still.
- 1:23:42Speaker 8: I feel like it was a good attempt for people
- 1:23:44Speaker 8: who had really not had enough experience to make a
- 1:23:48Speaker 8: better movie yet.
- 1:23:49Speaker 5: This is technically the director's first feature. And he wrote it, too.
- 1:23:53Speaker 5: He did one short film and this one. And I
- 1:23:56Speaker 5: feel like there's a lot of talent there. The thing
- 1:23:59Speaker 5: I was going to give him credit for is there's...
- 1:24:02Speaker 5: little stuff. And if you go back, like if, if
- 1:24:05Speaker 5: you didn't notice it, go back and watch it because
- 1:24:07Speaker 5: there's all the, again, once we hit that like 30,
- 1:24:10Speaker 5: 35 minute point, you start seeing stuff and you'll see
- 1:24:14Speaker 5: stuff in the background that the characters don't even see
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: when you, those weird backlit, like, uh, they're kind of
- 1:24:20Speaker 5: translucent windows, but there's at least two different places where
- 1:24:24Speaker 5: you see like very obvious stuff for us.
- 1:24:27Speaker 8: But some of them, I thought the cameraman should have
- 1:24:30Speaker 8: seen that shadow behind that door. It's like, how is
- 1:24:34Speaker 8: he not seeing that?
- 1:24:34Speaker 12: Is he just holding the camera and looking around?
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: There is a lot of stuff that you miss. If
- 1:24:39Speaker 5: you actually have a viewfinder, there is a ton of
- 1:24:41Speaker 5: stuff you kind of miss until you go back. Because
- 1:24:43Speaker 5: I've found watching stuff after we're going, oh, this looks
- 1:24:46Speaker 5: terrible now, where I thought it looked fine before.
- 1:24:48Speaker 8: Like we'll be recording at Nancy's and you'll see some
- 1:24:51Speaker 8: demon lurking in the window.
- 1:24:53Speaker 5: Well, I see those. I just don't tell you guys.
- 1:24:55Speaker 5: I'm just like, shh, it might eat us.
- 1:24:57Speaker 9: Well, the first part of the movie that genuinely scared
- 1:25:00Speaker 9: me is the part where he's looking through the camera
- 1:25:02Speaker 9: and there's the kid in the hallway and no one
- 1:25:04Speaker 9: sees it.
- 1:25:04Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:25:05Speaker 5: That effect wasn't bad. But again, I feel like in
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: a different, more artsy movie, they wouldn't show you that.
- 1:25:12Speaker 5: I like the fact that they were just like, No,
- 1:25:15Speaker 5: you guys came here to see this stuff. We're just
- 1:25:17Speaker 5: going to put it on the screen. This isn't the
- 1:25:18Speaker 5: big finale. That would be the big finale in an
- 1:25:21Speaker 5: artsy movie. They were just like, nope, we got 20
- 1:25:23Speaker 5: more minutes, and here they are.
- 1:25:25Speaker 7: It wasn't like a demon with lights on it with
- 1:25:27Speaker 7: fangs and shit.
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: It was just creepy little kids.
- 1:25:30Speaker 7: Leave it to me as much as you can. Then
- 1:25:32Speaker 7: it's scarier. It's creepy little kids. Or Kubrick was smart
- 1:25:34Speaker 7: in having a really, really very clear and very short
- 1:25:39Speaker 7: quick flash.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:25:40Speaker 10: He was pretty good at that, too.
- 1:25:41Speaker 8: It does seem like as you get more skilled in filmmaking,
- 1:25:46Speaker 8: you kind of do less. Yeah. Like, when you're starting out,
- 1:25:51Speaker 8: you just sort of throw more at the camera. And
- 1:25:55Speaker 8: it works, but, you know.
- 1:25:58Speaker 7: Well, in Reservoir Dogs, where he cuts the guy's ear off, like,
- 1:26:00Speaker 7: the camera runs away, like, right when it should.
- 1:26:02Speaker 5: See, I know. I'm thinking kind of the other way.
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:26:05Speaker 5: I'm feeling like when you start off as an indie director,
- 1:26:08Speaker 5: you don't have any resources and you kind of have
- 1:26:10Speaker 5: to show less and do less. But you have to
- 1:26:13Speaker 5: be more creative. And then 20 years later when they're
- 1:26:16Speaker 5: throwing millions of dollars at you, you go, oh, we
- 1:26:18Speaker 5: can show all this crap now. And put no work
- 1:26:21Speaker 5: in it. I think if you can find the balance
- 1:26:24Speaker 5: between those, that's the key.
- 1:26:26Speaker 8: I think it's finding the heart of the story, like
- 1:26:28Speaker 8: what's guiding the vision. Because lots of things would be
- 1:26:31Speaker 8: cool to do but only certain ones really suit the occasion.
- 1:26:37Speaker 5: Well, and I think finding the characters, too, because I
- 1:26:40Speaker 5: think that's the thing. We all said we kind of
- 1:26:41Speaker 5: hate these characters. We want to see them die. Where
- 1:26:44Speaker 5: I think the difference, and I try not to immediately
- 1:26:47Speaker 5: jump to this comparison, but like any of these movies,
- 1:26:50Speaker 5: you have to kind of go Blair Witch, and I'm like,
- 1:26:52Speaker 5: that's the difference. Blair Witch, you care about those characters.
- 1:26:55Speaker 5: You don't want to see them die.
- 1:26:57Speaker 8: That poor map guy.
- 1:26:58Speaker 5: Oh, my God.
- 1:26:59Speaker 10: He was so dumb. He kicked it in the creek.
- 1:27:04Speaker 8: It was so heartbreaking. He was childlike, and that was
- 1:27:07Speaker 8: a good lead-in to him standing in the corner.
- 1:27:10Speaker 5: Yeah, and the only other one that you felt like
- 1:27:13Speaker 5: had a handle on it disappears. But even movies that
- 1:27:15Speaker 5: are not horror.
- 1:27:16Speaker 8: Movies, like, oh, what was the big movie about the
- 1:27:20Speaker 8: drug trade?
- 1:27:21Speaker 9: Traffic?
- 1:27:23Speaker 5: Traffic, yeah.
- 1:27:24Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:27:25Speaker 8: Pretty much everybody in that movie could get shot in
- 1:27:27Speaker 8: the face. All I cared about was the Mexican cop
- 1:27:30Speaker 8: who was kind of corrupt, but doing the best he could.
- 1:27:33Speaker 8: He was a good Nietzschean.
- 1:27:34Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:27:34Speaker 8: He was just like, yeah, that's, you know, you just
- 1:27:37Speaker 8: do the best you can with the situation you have.
- 1:27:40Speaker 8: But everybody else just seemed corrupt and idiotic.
- 1:27:44Speaker 5: A little too realistic.
- 1:27:46Speaker 9: I think what I liked about this movie, like, was
- 1:27:48Speaker 9: it a good movie? Like a good, smart, well thought out,
- 1:27:52Speaker 9: well written, amazing movie. cinematic masterpiece? No. Was it a
- 1:27:56Speaker 9: scary movie?
- 1:27:57Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:27:58Speaker 9: I was legitimately scared at parts of this movie. That
- 1:28:00Speaker 9: doesn't happen because I watch scary movies all the time.
- 1:28:04Speaker 5: I will give you that because I watched it last
- 1:28:06Speaker 5: night when it was dark. It was funny because then
- 1:28:09Speaker 5: I'm sitting there and the whole ceiling starts making these
- 1:28:11Speaker 5: weird noises in my room. I'm just like, I really
- 1:28:13Speaker 5: don't know what that is.
- 1:28:14Speaker 8: That part of me is broken.
- 1:28:15Speaker 5: I just kind of ignored it. But, you know, I
- 1:28:17Speaker 5: usually do. I don't have that anymore.
- 1:28:18Speaker 8: You're like, I've seen it all.
- 1:28:19Speaker 7: Not when you're watching the movie.
- 1:28:20Speaker 8: It's not.
- 1:28:21Speaker 5: Well, that's the thing. I did start thinking about it more.
- 1:28:24Speaker 8: It's not that I've seen it all. It's just at
- 1:28:25Speaker 8: some point, I didn't care.
- 1:28:28Speaker 5: Well, no, that's where I've gotten, though. Because everybody else
- 1:28:31Speaker 5: gets freaked out about that stuff. And I'm just like, whatever.
- 1:28:33Speaker 8: If I have to get up.
- 1:28:34Speaker 5: And kill this ghost, it's going to be annoying. I'm
- 1:28:38Speaker 5: just going to lay here.
- 1:28:39Speaker 8: One comedian who was on the Redneck Comedy Tour, Ron White.
- 1:28:44Speaker 8: There's something about him I respect. Because he told some
- 1:28:46Speaker 8: story about being on an airplane. And everybody's freaking out
- 1:28:50Speaker 8: because there's turbulence. And he was drinking. He's like, well,
- 1:28:53Speaker 8: I guess we'll find out. And I'm like, yeah, I
- 1:28:56Speaker 8: believe he knows being there.
- 1:28:59Speaker 5: That's kind of my thing, especially with the ghost stories.
- 1:29:01Speaker 5: I'm like, well, either they're just ghosts and they can't
- 1:29:04Speaker 5: affect us in this real world and you're fine. Or
- 1:29:07Speaker 5: they can and they're just going to kill you. So
- 1:29:09Speaker 5: there's not a whole lot. You're just going to be
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: scared for the sake of being scared. But you can't
- 1:29:12Speaker 5: really do anything about ghosts. I, you know, like, the.
- 1:29:16Speaker 9: First time something really weird happened at my house, I just, like,
- 1:29:19Speaker 9: leaned against the wall and was like, well, this could
- 1:29:21Speaker 9: be really annoying.
- 1:29:24Speaker 5: Damn you, Casper!
- 1:29:25Speaker 9: And then something changed, and I was like, no, I'm scared,
- 1:29:28Speaker 9: I can't stay here.
- 1:29:29Speaker 8: You know, it's funny, because, like, really small little things
- 1:29:33Speaker 8: that wouldn't scare anybody can scare me.
- 1:29:36Speaker 10: Just, like, little awkward things, like.
- 1:29:39Speaker 5: Having children. You know, I don't know, it's weird, because.
- 1:29:44Speaker 8: my kids are the easiest kids. I would have had
- 1:29:48Speaker 8: kids before if I'd known I was going for a ride,
- 1:29:51Speaker 8: you know, it's been so easy. I thought they were
- 1:29:54Speaker 8: going to be like.
- 1:29:55Speaker 10: Me, you know.
- 1:29:57Speaker 8: That would have been horrific because I was a demon spawn.
- 1:30:02Speaker 10: But, um, Maybe they went vicariously. Maybe they hear your stories.
- 1:30:05Speaker 5: Yeah, they saw the outcome of you and they were like, oh,
- 1:30:08Speaker 5: let's not do that.
- 1:30:08Speaker 10: That is.
- 1:30:10Speaker 8: And, you know, if I could give anybody in the
- 1:30:12Speaker 8: world some advice free on iTunes, it would be just
- 1:30:17Speaker 8: tell your kids they can do whatever they want.
- 1:30:19Speaker 10: And then they'll.
- 1:30:20Speaker 8: Figure, like, this guy's useless.
- 1:30:23Speaker 5: We're going to have to work this out. I'm going
- 1:30:26Speaker 5: to have to parent myself.
- 1:30:26Speaker 8: Exactly. They're like, you know, they'll be watching. I tried
- 1:30:29Speaker 8: to get my daughter to watch Deadwood with me. She's like, Dad,
- 1:30:32Speaker 8: this is inappropriate.
- 1:30:34Speaker 5: Somebody's got to parent.
- 1:30:36Speaker 10: Damn it.
- 1:30:37Speaker 8: I'm like, I forgot about this part.
- 1:30:39Speaker 7: I'm sorry, but it's really good.
- 1:30:42Speaker 9: I remember once as a teenager, I woke up and
- 1:30:44Speaker 9: there was, like, a strange man sleeping on the couch. And, like,
- 1:30:48Speaker 9: I was, like, asleep in my bedroom. And, you know,
- 1:30:51Speaker 9: I was just sleeping in, like, a t-shirt. And once
- 1:30:54Speaker 9: my mom walked up, I had to lecture her about, like,
- 1:30:57Speaker 9: you cannot have strange men sleep on the couch. Like,
- 1:31:00Speaker 9: I am in my room sleeping in my underwear. That's wrong.
- 1:31:03Speaker 8: Yeah. There's really a lot of that going around. Like,
- 1:31:08Speaker 8: my kids and their friends, like, they're of that generation where,
- 1:31:14Speaker 8: you know, the internet was around. Anything they want to
- 1:31:17Speaker 8: find out about, they're like.
- 1:31:19Speaker 10: You know, we've got time for that.
- 1:31:23Speaker 8: We don't, yeah. Y'all need to try to hold this together.
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: Right. Yeah.
- 1:31:28Speaker 5: Well, I think that's why parents now just schedule their
- 1:31:32Speaker 5: children to death so they don't have time to get
- 1:31:34Speaker 5: in trouble. I didn't do that.
- 1:31:36Speaker 7: I pretty much just let them, you know, fake the
- 1:31:39Speaker 7: schedule and then go find the, yeah, that's what I did. But, Like, no, yeah,
- 1:31:43Speaker 7: I'm going to the movies, Mom.
- 1:31:44Speaker 5: Like, parents now just have so much stuff to do
- 1:31:47Speaker 5: all day long with the kid and take the kid
- 1:31:48Speaker 5: here and run them there. And, yeah, and I'm just like,
- 1:31:51Speaker 5: we didn't do any of this. And maybe it's just
- 1:31:53Speaker 5: because I was a deadbeat kid and I didn't do anything.
- 1:31:55Speaker 5: But I feel like even if I would have, like,
- 1:31:57Speaker 5: what little I remember doing, I just went and did
- 1:31:59Speaker 5: it myself. You know, like, I went, oh, I got
- 1:32:01Speaker 5: to go be up at school for this dumb thing
- 1:32:03Speaker 5: I said I was going to do.
- 1:32:04Speaker 9: It's like a paradigm shift in parenting.
- 1:32:05Speaker 7: Yeah, it's very different now.
- 1:32:07Speaker 5: There's, like, a.
- 1:32:07Speaker 9: Sociological term for both types of parenting. I can't remember
- 1:32:10Speaker 9: what they are now, but. It's like, it's a thing
- 1:32:12Speaker 9: that they study.
- 1:32:13Speaker 8: Well, the new one is like, well, they call it
- 1:32:15Speaker 8: helicopter parenting. Yeah.
- 1:32:17Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:32:18Speaker 8: But I mean, I did that, but the thing is,
- 1:32:21Speaker 8: you know, they say you can't be like friends with
- 1:32:24Speaker 8: your kids and it's like, well, yeah, I wouldn't be
- 1:32:27Speaker 8: if they were assholes, but my kids are pretty cool
- 1:32:30Speaker 8: and I can hang out with them like a fair
- 1:32:32Speaker 8: amount of the time and it doesn't bother me. Um,
- 1:32:37Speaker 8: And it just worked out that way. I mean, I
- 1:32:38Speaker 8: didn't plan on that.
- 1:32:39Speaker 5: I think it's a case-by-case basis.
- 1:32:41Speaker 8: Yeah, that's what I think.
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: It is.
- 1:32:43Speaker 8: Really, the bigger fact than the fact that you happen
- 1:32:47Speaker 8: to be biologically the parent of somebody is that you're
- 1:32:51Speaker 8: just two people who happen.
- 1:32:52Speaker 5: To be on the planet at the same time. Yeah,
- 1:32:53Speaker 5: it's still a relationship, and every relationship is different. Yeah,
- 1:32:57Speaker 5: and if you get along well, well, then go with that.
- 1:33:01Speaker 5: Then hang out.
- 1:33:01Speaker 8: How many people do I get along with?
- 1:33:03Speaker 5: Not very many.
- 1:33:04Speaker 10: Not many.
- 1:33:05Speaker 9: I came to a realization... this week as this like
- 1:33:07Speaker 9: terrible child from like I don't know where he was
- 1:33:10Speaker 9: from but he was like yelling at me for no
- 1:33:12Speaker 9: reason and he was like maybe four he was terrible
- 1:33:15Speaker 9: and he had this like sweet mother you know who
- 1:33:18Speaker 9: like tried to guide him and do the right thing
- 1:33:20Speaker 9: you know she was like say you're sorry and he
- 1:33:23Speaker 9: was like no.
- 1:33:24Speaker 5: I hate her and like I mean.
- 1:33:25Speaker 9: Like kids don't usually dislike me like kids are usually like.
- 1:33:29Speaker 5: So once again, the message of this movie, and we
- 1:33:32Speaker 5: came to it last week as well. So it's the
- 1:33:34Speaker 5: truth of the universe. Kids are assholes.
- 1:33:36Speaker 7: Do you guys think out there somewhere there's a guy
- 1:33:38Speaker 7: with a bunch of skull rings on his fingers who
- 1:33:41Speaker 7: watched this movie because he's into ghost hunting TV shows?
- 1:33:44Speaker 5: His feelings have gone from completely.
- 1:33:47Speaker 12: Hurt to now he's like, I fucking can't believe.
- 1:33:50Speaker 10: They're saying his name.
- 1:33:51Speaker 8: And he's sitting in this fuzzy, brown, lazy boy.
- 1:33:56Speaker 7: But we're talking about parenting shit that's making him go,
- 1:33:59Speaker 7: they know me.
- 1:34:00Speaker 5: I mean, if only I wouldn't have ditched all my kids.
- 1:34:03Speaker 9: I used to think that there were no bad kids,
- 1:34:06Speaker 9: there were just bad parents. And then I realized, no,
- 1:34:09Speaker 9: some kids are just like, Some kids are just born dicks.
- 1:34:11Speaker 5: Demons born. I'm telling you.
- 1:34:14Speaker 10: Have you ever met the parents that know that?
- 1:34:15Speaker 7: That's why they're not trying to do anything.
- 1:34:17Speaker 5: They just don't care. They're just like, well, I screwed
- 1:34:20Speaker 5: something up. Genetics is not right here.
- 1:34:23Speaker 10: I didn't do anything.
- 1:34:25Speaker 8: There really are parents who raise their kids to be dicks.
- 1:34:29Speaker 8: Because they believe in it as a way of life.
- 1:34:31Speaker 5: It's how they were brought up and they want to
- 1:34:34Speaker 5: pass that along.
- 1:34:35Speaker 8: It's true.
- 1:34:35Speaker 7: It's weird though when the kids are bigger dicks than
- 1:34:37Speaker 7: the parents. The parents seem like they're pretty mellow.
- 1:34:39Speaker 5: They're excelling. Surpassing. You always want better for your children.
- 1:34:44Speaker 8: The thing that skips a generation, because my parents were
- 1:34:47Speaker 8: really good kids, and then they had us, and we
- 1:34:51Speaker 8: were horrific. And then they always used to say, well,
- 1:34:55Speaker 8: when you grow up, you're going to have kids that
- 1:34:57Speaker 8: are going to be just like you. I was like, no.
- 1:34:59Speaker 10: No, I'm pretty sure.
- 1:35:00Speaker 8: No, my kids are like you. My kids are going
- 1:35:03Speaker 8: to have horrible tits. And it's so unfair. I'm sorry,
- 1:35:08Speaker 8: life just isn't fair. It doesn't work that way.
- 1:35:11Speaker 7: He's like, all these fucking rings on my fingers. I
- 1:35:14Speaker 7: wanted to hear about this movie. Now they're talking about parenting.
- 1:35:17Speaker 5: That's the through line. The kids in this orphanage are dicks.
- 1:35:21Speaker 5: The kid in Babadook is a dick. Eventually he turns
- 1:35:24Speaker 5: it around a little bit. But, you know, still, like kids...
- 1:35:27Speaker 5: You can't trust them.
- 1:35:28Speaker 8: Well, those are the traditional scary things. They're scary kids.
- 1:35:30Speaker 5: Evil kids.
- 1:35:31Speaker 8: They're scary young girls who are just becoming women, like
- 1:35:35Speaker 8: the Carrie thing.
- 1:35:36Speaker 5: That is frightening anyway.
- 1:35:38Speaker 7: Actually, if you in your head picture this place full
- 1:35:41Speaker 7: of Macaulay Calkins from The Good Son, that's fucking terrifying.
- 1:35:46Speaker 5: How about Macaulay Calkins.
- 1:35:47Speaker 8: From Richie Rich?
- 1:35:47Speaker 10: If you were overrun by 12 of those things, you're dead.
- 1:35:50Speaker 8: And also, you know, all the troubles that America is facing,
- 1:35:54Speaker 8: you'd think it was... built on a bunch of old
- 1:35:56Speaker 8: Indian burial grounds.
- 1:35:59Speaker 5: Good thing we didn't screw people over and take over.
- 1:36:01Speaker 10: Oh, shit.
- 1:36:02Speaker 7: I think we ordered them into small little sections all
- 1:36:04Speaker 7: at once and let them die in little spots instead of.
- 1:36:07Speaker 5: I used to say that about the same mall.
- 1:36:09Speaker 8: It's like it was built over some cursed land.
- 1:36:12Speaker 9: Well, wasn't it an orphanage at once?
- 1:36:14Speaker 5: Yeah, it was. Or did they just say that? No,
- 1:36:17Speaker 5: it was.
- 1:36:17Speaker 8: There are episodes about the ghosts.
- 1:36:19Speaker 9: I've had a legitimately terrifying experience there. Like, I've never felt...
- 1:36:23Speaker 9: I went to see Anchorman 2.
- 1:36:25Speaker 5: That was your terrifying experience.
- 1:36:27Speaker 9: I was on a date.
- 1:36:28Speaker 8: Oh, my God.
- 1:36:29Speaker 5: I'm not sure I'm up for that.
- 1:36:31Speaker 9: And I was in the bathroom after the movie was out,
- 1:36:33Speaker 9: and it was, like, a late showing, so it was probably, like, 11, 30, midnight.
- 1:36:38Speaker 9: And I was in the bathroom, and, you know, like,
- 1:36:40Speaker 9: you know when there's someone near you, right? And there
- 1:36:42Speaker 9: was just, like, I didn't question it. There was someone
- 1:36:45Speaker 9: in the bathroom with me. I get out of the stall,
- 1:36:48Speaker 9: and no one had come in, no one had left,
- 1:36:49Speaker 9: and I was in the bathroom by myself. and there
- 1:36:52Speaker 9: was someone there at one point, and then there wasn't.
- 1:36:55Speaker 9: And I was just like, I guess Bo and Dave
- 1:36:58Speaker 9: were not fucking with me.
- 1:37:01Speaker 5: Or they were. I wouldn't put it past them.
- 1:37:03Speaker 7: You hit a cold spot, and you realize every bathroom
- 1:37:05Speaker 7: in every movie theater is the fucking coldest place on
- 1:37:07Speaker 7: the planet.
- 1:37:08Speaker 5: That might be it.
- 1:37:09Speaker 9: That's true. No, it was really weird.
- 1:37:14Speaker 8: A lot of people have stories about that place.
- 1:37:16Speaker 9: Strange things have happened to me in my life, but
- 1:37:18Speaker 9: I've never felt like, convinced there was another person near
- 1:37:23Speaker 9: me when there wasn't that.
- 1:37:24Speaker 5: Was Bo's story in that same building I.
- 1:37:27Speaker 9: Have a really good almost like a knack for knowing
- 1:37:30Speaker 9: when there's people around even if I can't see them
- 1:37:33Speaker 9: you know like the only time I don't is like
- 1:37:35Speaker 9: if I'm at work and like if you're in a
- 1:37:37Speaker 9: place where you know there's people around you and you
- 1:37:39Speaker 9: let your guard down just because you accept there's people
- 1:37:41Speaker 9: there but if I'm like outside walking at night by
- 1:37:44Speaker 9: myself like I can sense when there's people around me
- 1:37:48Speaker 9: so you.
- 1:37:48Speaker 8: Work in a restaurant Because everybody that works in a
- 1:37:51Speaker 8: restaurant develops like a sense of managing themselves.
- 1:37:55Speaker 5: I'm not going to run into you because I'm holding
- 1:37:56Speaker 5: all this stuff.
- 1:37:57Speaker 8: I feel that like teenagers should have to do at
- 1:38:00Speaker 8: least two years service in the restaurant industry. So they
- 1:38:04Speaker 8: don't grow up to be those people who are just
- 1:38:06Speaker 8: always standing in everybody's fucking way. And they have no idea. Like,
- 1:38:10Speaker 8: you know, they're just blocking the doorway and. Because you
- 1:38:13Speaker 8: work in a restaurant, you learn to manage yourself.
- 1:38:15Speaker 5: Get the hell out of the way. Somebody's coming through.
- 1:38:18Speaker 7: We used to call it homeschool.
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: Homeschool.
- 1:38:20Speaker 7: What are you doing?
- 1:38:20Speaker 5: Get out of the way. Get out of the way.
- 1:38:23Speaker 7: Go stand in the corner.
- 1:38:24Speaker 5: Yeah all right so we've we've certainly uh the fire's
- 1:38:30Speaker 5: gone out maybe in this episode but certainly in your
- 1:38:32Speaker 5: in your yard over there so is there anything you
- 1:38:35Speaker 5: want to pass along with your halloween wishes for everyone
- 1:38:39Speaker 5: check your candy even though that never really happened but
- 1:38:42Speaker 5: um no do you have your costume picked out.
- 1:38:46Speaker 8: No well i told you my one idea i found
- 1:38:49Speaker 8: a grenade pen on the ground. I was just going
- 1:38:52Speaker 8: to go around with that and say this is from Matilda.
- 1:38:56Speaker 5: You really should, actually.
- 1:38:58Speaker 8: But I really need a bag of them.
- 1:39:01Speaker 5: Well, they'll blow up.
- 1:39:02Speaker 7: And then, you know. Maybe a satchel full.
- 1:39:04Speaker 8: Have a bag full.
- 1:39:05Speaker 5: A satchel full of explosives. I don't know.
- 1:39:07Speaker 8: I haven't really been thinking about it this year. Have you?
- 1:39:10Speaker 5: I never bother because I don't have anywhere to go.
- 1:39:12Speaker 7: I'm always trying to watch enough horror movies to make
- 1:39:16Speaker 7: it to 31. It's Halloween and I got three. five
- 1:39:18Speaker 7: or six horror movies to watch if I'm going to
- 1:39:21Speaker 7: really be serious about it. People are like, what are
- 1:39:23Speaker 7: you doing? I don't have to worry about it. I'm
- 1:39:25Speaker 7: not going to dress up.
- 1:39:26Speaker 8: I actually did a real costume last year. I went
- 1:39:30Speaker 8: as Evil Dead Bob Ross. It was Bob Ross, but
- 1:39:34Speaker 8: I had cut off my hand and taped a paint
- 1:39:39Speaker 8: roller to it. So I was just going around with
- 1:39:42Speaker 8: a palette full of red blood paint and a paint roller.
- 1:39:46Speaker 8: And I made like a little film of it, but
- 1:39:50Speaker 8: I haven't edited it because unlike everything else I ever did,
- 1:39:53Speaker 8: I didn't write it. It was all improv. And there's
- 1:39:56Speaker 8: like 20 hours of this bullshit that I would have
- 1:40:00Speaker 8: to piece.
- 1:40:01Speaker 5: A narrative together from. And then some jerks on a
- 1:40:05Speaker 5: podcast will tear it apart.
- 1:40:07Speaker 10: Oh, yeah.
- 1:40:07Speaker 5: Who's this dick thinks he is?
- 1:40:09Speaker 8: But actually, I think it could be pretty good if
- 1:40:12Speaker 8: it was like a minute and a half. Out of
- 1:40:14Speaker 8: all that stuff.
- 1:40:15Speaker 5: You've just got your work cut out for you.
- 1:40:16Speaker 8: But yeah, that's a horrible way to work if you
- 1:40:19Speaker 8: don't have slaves.
- 1:40:20Speaker 7: Do you guys remember the last... Does everyone dress up
- 1:40:22Speaker 7: pretty often? I don't really dress up.
- 1:40:24Speaker 5: Not in a long time.
- 1:40:25Speaker 9: I feel like.
- 1:40:27Speaker 5: You used to pretty regularly for Halloween.
- 1:40:28Speaker 8: I would. I have a lot of stuff to dress
- 1:40:30Speaker 8: up with.
- 1:40:30Speaker 9: Did I dress up last year? Where was I last
- 1:40:32Speaker 9: year for Halloween? What did I do?
- 1:40:34Speaker 5: The Black Dahlia was pretty good.
- 1:40:35Speaker 8: I went to Time and Space. They did like a
- 1:40:37Speaker 8: Twin Peaks themed music show.
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: And.
- 1:40:42Speaker 8: Twin Limb was there, and Lacey was dressed as an owl.
- 1:40:47Speaker 8: And it was great.
- 1:40:48Speaker 5: That sounds about right.
- 1:40:49Speaker 8: She was not what she seemed.
- 1:40:51Speaker 7: The last good Halloween costume I had was Time Room
- 1:40:53Speaker 7: Biggums from the Dave Chappelle show, and.
- 1:40:56Speaker 8: That was years ago.
- 1:40:58Speaker 7: That's honestly the last one I can remember, really appreciating
- 1:41:02Speaker 7: how well I did it.
- 1:41:02Speaker 5: I don't think I have done it in years for Halloween.
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 1:41:07Speaker 5: I did it for our shows.
- 1:41:08Speaker 9: I was a lumberjack recently.
- 1:41:10Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 1:41:11Speaker 5: Yeah, but what about for Halloween?
- 1:41:12Speaker 8: Did you do anything for Halloween?
- 1:41:14Speaker 9: No, it was like, we were going to a costume contest,
- 1:41:18Speaker 9: and I was just like, everything I own is like
- 1:41:20Speaker 9: a costume, so this should be easy. I'm a queer dancer.
- 1:41:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:41:25Speaker 9: I had to narrow it down between like being a
- 1:41:27Speaker 9: weird space princess, and then, you know, I was like,
- 1:41:30Speaker 9: I'll just be a lumberjack.
- 1:41:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:41:32Speaker 9: And I own like a box full of suspenders but
- 1:41:35Speaker 9: couldn't find them so i just.
- 1:41:37Speaker 7: Like where you base the whole yeah gotta have my.
- 1:41:41Speaker 9: Suspenders exactly yeah and i didn't have an axe but
- 1:41:45Speaker 9: i feel like i conveyed the message well.
- 1:41:47Speaker 8: Enough yeah you didn't need the axe the axe was implicit.
- 1:41:51Speaker 9: Yeah exactly yeah the axe was with my logs and stuff.
- 1:41:55Speaker 7: Yeah roll paper towels.
- 1:41:58Speaker 8: I that think about that oh yeah.
- 1:42:00Speaker 9: That been a good idea but um i don't know
- 1:42:03Speaker 9: like i have a great memory unless you ask me
- 1:42:06Speaker 9: about something and i'm just like.
- 1:42:08Speaker 8: Oh i have that too i have a great memory
- 1:42:10Speaker 8: but if you ask me and it catches me off
- 1:42:12Speaker 8: guard i can't retrieve it it's like thanks you was
- 1:42:15Speaker 8: pretty good yeah the black dial that.
- 1:42:17Speaker 9: Was a long time ago though that was like five
- 1:42:19Speaker 9: years ago that's.
- 1:42:19Speaker 5: What i'm saying it's been that long it's been way
- 1:42:21Speaker 5: longer than that for me because i just I don't
- 1:42:24Speaker 5: usually go do, like, I'd rather go experience the trick-or-treating part. Like,
- 1:42:29Speaker 5: even if I'm not doing it anymore, like, I like
- 1:42:31Speaker 5: to go. We've got, again, the giant Hillcrest thing where
- 1:42:33Speaker 5: they do, it's just a huge ordeal. And it's like,
- 1:42:36Speaker 5: I kind of like to go there and just look
- 1:42:38Speaker 5: at the cool stuff they've done to the yard and
- 1:42:40Speaker 5: watch kids, you know, wander around. And it's kind of awesome.
- 1:42:43Speaker 9: Remember the kid who, like, just had a hooded sweatshirt
- 1:42:46Speaker 9: on and, like, a bloody stuffed animal on a stick?
- 1:42:48Speaker 9: and a name tag that said, Hi, my name is
- 1:42:50Speaker 9: Morbid Curiosity. And it was like a seven-year-old kid. It
- 1:42:54Speaker 9: was like a seven-year-old kid.
- 1:42:56Speaker 8: Oh, I know somebody's parents. I don't know.
- 1:43:01Speaker 5: I kind of like that.
- 1:43:02Speaker 8: I have a bunch of weird wigs because I go
- 1:43:04Speaker 8: see my daughter in Indianapolis and there's this great place
- 1:43:08Speaker 8: called Value World, which is a weird junk clothes store.
- 1:43:14Speaker 8: And there are a few of them, but They put
- 1:43:17Speaker 8: all their clothes in color, coated, so it's like a
- 1:43:21Speaker 8: little rainbow of old.
- 1:43:23Speaker 9: Goodwill does that.
- 1:43:24Speaker 8: Oh, it's lovely. But every time I go, I find
- 1:43:28Speaker 8: a horrible wig that I buy that just, like, kills
- 1:43:32Speaker 8: something in her soul. And I have one that, like,
- 1:43:35Speaker 8: I put it on my head, and I just look insane.
- 1:43:39Speaker 8: I make the guy from No Country for Old Men
- 1:43:42Speaker 8: look like a pussy. It makes me look scary insane.
- 1:43:48Speaker 8: But I've got like four or five of them now
- 1:43:50Speaker 8: because every time I go, it's like, oh, here, I
- 1:43:52Speaker 8: should get this. She's like, Dad, please don't.
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: Don't.
- 1:43:55Speaker 7: I don't have any wigs.
- 1:43:59Speaker 8: I think she's going as Scully. And she told me
- 1:44:02Speaker 8: to keep an eye out for a Mulder wig for
- 1:44:05Speaker 8: her boyfriend.
- 1:44:06Speaker 7: I know a couple that are going as Scullion.
- 1:44:08Speaker 5: Yeah, it's coming back now, so I guess it'll be
- 1:44:10Speaker 5: relevant again.
- 1:44:11Speaker 9: I'm going to be a 1920s bather.
- 1:44:14Speaker 7: 1920s what?
- 1:44:16Speaker 9: Bather.
- 1:44:18Speaker 5: Just because you have that suit.
- 1:44:19Speaker 9: Just because I have a dress that looks like that
- 1:44:21Speaker 9: and also a boater hat.
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:44:23Speaker 5: I think you're onto something.
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:44:25Speaker 9: A costume.
- 1:44:27Speaker 5: Alright, let's go put these costumes on right now. Otherwise,
- 1:44:31Speaker 5: let's wrap it up here. Thank you for joining us
- 1:44:34Speaker 5: for these last several episodes in our Halloween festivities this year.
- 1:44:38Speaker 5: And thank you to Fred for letting us hang out
- 1:44:40Speaker 5: in your backyard. Yeah.
- 1:44:42Speaker 8: And everybody out there in podcast world, like if you
- 1:44:45Speaker 8: want to stop by and roast hot dogs sometime, just
- 1:44:47Speaker 8: give me a heads up.
- 1:44:48Speaker 5: Drop us a line.
- 1:44:48Speaker 8: Stop by the backyard.
- 1:44:49Speaker 5: We can probably hook you up.
- 1:44:51Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:44:53Speaker 5: Otherwise, that about does it. We will return next time.
- 1:44:55Speaker 5: Same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: The other night, about 12 o'clock, I thought I'd go
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: downstairs just to check the lock. When I heard something
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: in the house, I don't mean a mouse. I swear
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: there was spooks, spooks, spooks. I know there was.
- 1:45:28Speaker 10: Spooks, spooks, spooks, spooks.
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: I couldn't move, just stood and stared. I never was
- 1:45:36Speaker 2: so scared. A voice spook spoke and I.
- 1:45:39Speaker 5: Heard him speak.
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: He said, what's there gonna make the back door squeak?
- 1:45:44Speaker 16: We'll tease the cat and hound the pup and raise
- 1:45:48Speaker 16: our spirits up. Oh, Lord, them spooks, spooks, spooks. Those
- 1:45:53Speaker 16: scary old spooks, spooks, spooks, spooks.
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: You don't have to take my word, but I heard
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: what I heard.
- 1:46:03Speaker 9: The next spook spoke, he said, suppose we make the
- 1:46:06Speaker 9: faucet start.
- 1:46:07Speaker 5: To drip and make the shutter shake.
- 1:46:10Speaker 6: You let me know just what you want. This is
- 1:46:13Speaker 6: my favorite haunt.
- 1:46:15Speaker 7: Beware of them spooks, spooks, spooks, they're mischievous.
- 1:46:19Speaker 8: Spooks, spooks, spooks, spooks.
- 1:46:23Speaker 17: I hate spoofing.
- 1:46:24Speaker 5: Man, I mean that I've seen what I've seen.
- 1:46:29Speaker 2: A big spook spoke, he said, Spike, my son, he said,
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: I'll show you how to scare up some fun. But
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: next time when you wail, see here, you make it
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: louder and clearer. Watch out for them spooks, spooks, spooks,
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: or those nasty old spooks, spooks, spooks, spooks. Maybe you
- 1:46:49Speaker 2: don't think it's so, but I know what I know.
- 1:46:55Speaker 5: The last spook turned to his spouse and frowned.
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: Said, I thought I told you to wait in the ground.
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: But you look awful cute tonight.
- 1:47:04Speaker 7: In fact, you look afraid.
- 1:47:06Speaker 9: He's talking about.
- 1:47:08Speaker 10: Spooks, spooks, spooks.
- 1:47:10Speaker 7: Real genuine spooks.
- 1:47:12Speaker 10: Spooks, spooks, spooks.
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: No, you stop putting up your dukes.
- 1:47:17Speaker 7: You just can't fight with them spooks.
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: I'm cutting out of here, man.
- 1:47:25Speaker 8: I don't dig this. Wait for us, wait for us,
- 1:47:29Speaker 8: wait for us.
- 1:47:30Speaker 10: Wait for us.
- 1:47:33Speaker 9: That's horrible.
- 1:47:37Speaker 8: Cannibal Holocaust?
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:47:39Speaker 7: The Green Inferno?
- 1:47:42Speaker 9: Not washing your hands before you use the restroom when
- 1:47:45Speaker 9: you have marshmallow like every square inch of your fingers.
- 1:47:51Speaker 5: Basically, but what you just described is the new porn
- 1:47:57Speaker 5: that's taken off now.
- 1:47:59Speaker 18: Some of the marshmallow sticks too have like an encrusted
- 1:48:05Speaker 18: marshmallow memory from previous marshmallow roasts.
- 1:48:10Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:48:11Speaker 5: There is a lot of penetration there. Yeah.
- 1:48:20Speaker 10: Marshmallows.
- 1:48:21Speaker 5: Oh, the holidays.
