- 0:00Speaker 1: And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it
- 0:03Speaker 1: with a graving tool, after he had made it a
- 0:06Speaker 1: molten calf. And they said, These be thy gods, O Israel,
- 0:12Speaker 1: which brought thee out of the land of Egypt. Exodus
- 0:15Speaker 1: 32.4 Dear God, as you begin to bless me and
- 0:20Speaker 1: enlarge my territory, I will not forget that you are
- 0:24Speaker 1: my God, unlike the children of Israel in Exodus 32.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I will not serve the idols of this world, but
- 0:32Speaker 1: instead will hold fast to your instructions and commands. I
- 0:37Speaker 1: will not go backwards and live in a way that
- 0:40Speaker 1: represents the limiting and ungodly mindsets of slavery. I declare
- 0:46Speaker 1: that I will remember the promises of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
- 0:51Speaker 1: and live in a way as to secure them for myself.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Drunkenness will not cloud my judgment. then devotion to man-made
- 1:01Speaker 1: idols will not sever my devotion to you, God. I
- 1:05Speaker 1: decree that I am on the Lord's side. I confess
- 1:09Speaker 1: that I will stand for what's right when standing for
- 1:12Speaker 1: what's wrong seems enticing. I acknowledge that my life isn't
- 1:17Speaker 1: my own, but it's yours to bring glory to your name.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Thank you that despite my downfall like the Israelites in
- 1:27Speaker 1: today's story, You will not leave me or forsake me,
- 1:31Speaker 1: even when I wrestle with my sin and shortcomings. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Listening to these daily prayers strengthens your relationship with God.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Continue hearing from the Lord by listening to today's Bible
- 1:49Speaker 1: in a Year.
- 2:07Speaker 2: A God we can see? In our last story, we
- 2:11Speaker 2: learned about God's promises to bless his people and be
- 2:14Speaker 2: with them. He descended in fire, lightning, and smoke on
- 2:19Speaker 2: Mount Sinai to give Moses a word for the people.
- 2:23Speaker 2: He gave them the Ten Commandments. Then he asked them
- 2:26Speaker 2: to build a tabernacle so he could dwell with his people.
- 2:30Speaker 2: In this story, we learn about the Israelites already breaking
- 2:34Speaker 2: the first commandment. Their impatience leads them astray, and they
- 2:38Speaker 2: betray the God that had just delivered them out of slavery,
- 2:43Speaker 2: as inspired by the book of Exodus.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of The Bible
- 2:51Speaker 3: in a Year. In our previous episode, we learned that
- 2:54Speaker 3: God brought the Israelites to the foot of Mount Sinai
- 2:57Speaker 3: and spoke to them there. promising blessing if they obeyed
- 3:01Speaker 3: His commands. God gave us the Ten Commandments, instructions all
- 3:07Speaker 3: related to Him and how to know Him and how
- 3:09Speaker 3: to live with one another. Today we'll hear how quickly
- 3:13Speaker 3: they failed to keep the first of those commandments. Listen
- 3:17Speaker 3: to their words to Aaron as Moses delays upon top
- 3:20Speaker 3: of the mountain. Where have they placed their trust? Today's
- 3:23Speaker 3: reading provides a stark contrast between the leadership of Moses
- 3:27Speaker 3: and that of Aaron. highlighting why God called Moses instead
- 3:31Speaker 3: of his brother. Finally, we'll discover there's a price for
- 3:35Speaker 3: sin against God. Yet even in the midst of judgment
- 3:39Speaker 3: and punishment, God's grace and mercy will come through. Let's
- 3:44Speaker 3: listen now to today's story.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Moses had ascended back up to Mount Sinai to hear
- 3:50Speaker 2: from God on behalf of the people. The thunder still
- 3:53Speaker 2: rolled down the mountain like waves crashing on a shore.
- 3:57Speaker 2: The people took note of Moses' delay to come down
- 4:00Speaker 2: from the mountain, so they turned to Aaron for guidance.
- 4:04Speaker 2: We do not know what has become of Moses. He
- 4:07Speaker 2: is the one who brought us out of Egypt. Quick,
- 4:11Speaker 2: make God for us, to protect and nurture us. Aaron,
- 4:16Speaker 2: just as confused and desperate as the people, agreed. He
- 4:20Speaker 2: said to them, Take off all your rings, earrings, and
- 4:24Speaker 2: necklaces of gold and bring them to me. So all
- 4:27Speaker 2: the people began to lay down their possessions at the
- 4:30Speaker 2: feet of Arryn. They willingly gave up what was precious
- 4:33Speaker 2: to them, yet all for a fabrication, a false sense
- 4:37Speaker 2: of security. Arryn, using fashioning tools, constructed a golden calf
- 4:43Speaker 2: with his own bare hands. He brought the calf before
- 4:46Speaker 2: the people, erected high into the air so everyone could see.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Applause roared throughout the camp. Dancing and revelry began to spread.
- 4:57Speaker 2: These are your gods, people of Israel. These are the
- 5:01Speaker 2: gods that brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
- 5:05Speaker 2: The people cried out, paying no mind to God's first
- 5:08Speaker 2: encouragement to them, when he said, I am the Lord
- 5:12Speaker 2: your God, who brought you out of the land of
- 5:15Speaker 2: Egypt and out of slavery. In the distance God was
- 5:19Speaker 2: meeting with Moses, yet this was not hidden from his sight.
- 5:23Speaker 2: When Aaron saw how happy the calf made the people,
- 5:27Speaker 2: He built an altar for it. He hosted a large
- 5:30Speaker 2: feast to celebrate their new god. They rose up early
- 5:34Speaker 2: the next day to give peace offerings. As the day
- 5:37Speaker 2: dragged on, they feasted like gluttons, filling their bellies with
- 5:42Speaker 2: meat and wine. A strange daze of drunkenness slithered around camp.
- 5:47Speaker 2: As people rose up in dancing and orgies, their laughter
- 5:51Speaker 2: was not joyful praise, rather inebriated and lustful cackles. They
- 5:57Speaker 2: paid homage to their created God by creating their own warship,
- 6:01Speaker 2: satisfying every selfish desire they could.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Come up with.
- 6:06Speaker 2: The newly freed slaves of Israel began to look a
- 6:08Speaker 2: whole lot like their old masters, the Egyptians. The stench
- 6:13Speaker 2: of their idolatry carried through the canyons up to the mountain,
- 6:17Speaker 2: where God met with Moses. In the quietness of his
- 6:21Speaker 2: prayers to God, Moses heard his voice change. The Lord
- 6:25Speaker 2: said to Moses, Go down to see your people, for
- 6:29Speaker 2: they have corrupted themselves. How quickly they have turned from
- 6:32Speaker 2: my commandments. High and lifted up among them is a
- 6:36Speaker 2: golden calf for whom they have sacrificed and worshipped. Moses'
- 6:42Speaker 2: eyes widened. Though the people may have lost their fear
- 6:45Speaker 2: of God, Moses surely did not. He had remembered all
- 6:49Speaker 2: the Lord was capable of and how kind he had
- 6:52Speaker 2: been to all the children of Israel. God continued and said,
- 6:57Speaker 2: I have looked upon my people, and behold, they are
- 7:00Speaker 2: a stubborn people. Leave this place, for my wrath will
- 7:04Speaker 2: descend upon them like wildfire. From you alone I will
- 7:09Speaker 2: build my nation. These words disturbed Moses. He fell before
- 7:15Speaker 2: God and said, Lord, why does your wrath burn hot
- 7:19Speaker 2: against your people? You have brought them out of slavery
- 7:22Speaker 2: with your might. The Egyptians will say you lured them
- 7:26Speaker 2: out of slavery just to kill them. Please turn from
- 7:29Speaker 2: your anger and have mercy on them. Tears began to
- 7:32Speaker 2: flow from Moses as he begged God to spare them.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Remember your promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Moses implored.
- 7:42Speaker 2: His prayer was not long, but it was strong. Moses
- 7:46Speaker 2: reflected the merciful heart of God in his prayers, and
- 7:49Speaker 2: they pleased God. Moses was truly a leader, able to
- 7:53Speaker 2: reflect God's heart and desire. Moses could have easily done nothing,
- 7:58Speaker 2: but instead he interceded for his people. God looked upon Moses.
- 8:04Speaker 2: He was pleased and relented. Moses hustled down the mountain,
- 8:09Speaker 2: eyes piercing with an internal fury. Moses had two tablets
- 8:14Speaker 2: of the testimony of God in his hands. The writings
- 8:17Speaker 2: of God for the people were engraved in stone. Joshua
- 8:21Speaker 2: was waiting at the base of the mountain for Moses.
- 8:24Speaker 2: When Joshua heard the celebration from camp, he ran to
- 8:27Speaker 2: go meet Moses and said, There are sounds of war
- 8:30Speaker 2: in the camp. Moses and Joshua came near to the
- 8:34Speaker 2: camp and saw the calf risen high among the people.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Moses peered across the sea of drunk faces. They danced
- 8:42Speaker 2: to the music. They caressed those that were not their
- 8:45Speaker 2: wives or husbands. They drank their wisdom away. Moses watched this.
- 8:51Speaker 2: He was right in front of them, yet unseen because
- 8:54Speaker 2: of their drunkenness. In that moment, a deep anger came
- 8:58Speaker 2: upon Moses, an anger that had not been awakened since
- 9:01Speaker 2: he was a young man, strangling the Egyptian taskmaster. In
- 9:06Speaker 2: an outburst of rage, Moses threw the stone tablets at
- 9:09Speaker 2: the foot of the mountain. The sound echoed across the
- 9:12Speaker 2: canyon and the dancing and music ceased. The people turned
- 9:16Speaker 2: their heads and stared up at Moses. Silence fell upon
- 9:20Speaker 2: them all. Moses walked into the crowd of people and
- 9:24Speaker 2: took the calf from the altar. Without saying anything, Moses
- 9:28Speaker 2: dragged the calf past the people towards the bonfire in
- 9:32Speaker 2: the middle of the camp. He threw it into the
- 9:34Speaker 2: fire and watched it melt with his back turned towards
- 9:37Speaker 2: the people. He scooped up its ashes and scattered them
- 9:41Speaker 2: in the water nearby. He took a cup and filled
- 9:45Speaker 2: it with the water and gave it to the people
- 9:47Speaker 2: to drink. The bitter taste of the gold-dusted water was
- 9:51Speaker 2: a reminder of where they had come from. They had
- 9:54Speaker 2: just escaped the bitter gripes of slavery, and they ought
- 9:57Speaker 2: not to make themselves slaves again. Moses looked to Aaron,
- 10:02Speaker 2: who had remained silent. What did they do to you, Aaron?
- 10:06Speaker 2: Moses said with his eyes filling up with tears. Why
- 10:10Speaker 2: have you brought sin upon all of them? Aaron was frantic,
- 10:14Speaker 2: seeking to justify his actions. He was a brilliant communicator,
- 10:19Speaker 2: And just as his ancestor Jacob, Aaron could talk himself
- 10:23Speaker 2: out of almost any situation. Don't burn with anger, Moses.
- 10:28Speaker 2: You know the people are set on evil. They wanted
- 10:31Speaker 2: the false gods. I tossed their god in the fire
- 10:35Speaker 2: and the calf just appeared, Aaron lied. And just as
- 10:38Speaker 2: Adam did eons ago, he deferred the responsibility. Moses looked
- 10:44Speaker 2: at the people and saw that Aaron had allowed them
- 10:46Speaker 2: to divide and become loose with one another. Aaron had
- 10:50Speaker 2: once been his mouthpiece, but now Moses had to speak.
- 10:54Speaker 2: He stood at the base of the camp and shouted,
- 10:57Speaker 2: Who is on the Lord's side? If anyone is on
- 11:00Speaker 2: God's side, come stand by me. Out of the vast crowd,
- 11:05Speaker 2: the sons of Levi came forward from the group. Moses
- 11:08Speaker 2: then commanded them to kill those who had caused the
- 11:11Speaker 2: most dissension. With swords in their hands, the sons of
- 11:15Speaker 2: Levi killed about three thousand men that day. The silence
- 11:19Speaker 2: was cut, and screams oozed out of the camp like blood.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Moses spoke to the sons of Levi and said, Today
- 11:27Speaker 2: you have been ordained into the service of God. Each
- 11:30Speaker 2: one of you will have a blessing this day. The
- 11:34Speaker 2: sun rose the next day, and a gentle breeze came
- 11:38Speaker 2: in through the canyon. The people were silent, and Moses
- 11:41Speaker 2: paced the camp, gathering them to the base of the mountain.
- 11:45Speaker 2: He looked to them and said, Your sin was an
- 11:48Speaker 2: intense sin. I am going back up to the Lord,
- 11:52Speaker 2: and perhaps there is atonement for what you have done.
- 11:56Speaker 2: So Moses left, and the people watched him ascend back
- 11:59Speaker 2: up the mountain. Moses spoke before God and said, They
- 12:03Speaker 2: have sinned greatly against you, gods of gold. Moses cut
- 12:09Speaker 2: himself off and clenched his fist. His eyes closed and
- 12:12Speaker 2: his face held back tears. Please forgive them. Moses whispered,
- 12:18Speaker 2: But if you do not, kill me instead of them.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Moses trembled as he said these words. If a simple
- 12:26Speaker 2: sacrifice would not suffice, Moses wanted to stand between God
- 12:30Speaker 2: and them as atonement. There was a gentle silence between them.
- 12:34Speaker 2: The Lord said to Moses, Whoever has sinned against me,
- 12:37Speaker 2: I will require something from them. And then he sent
- 12:42Speaker 2: Moses back down the mountain. God would not blot out
- 12:45Speaker 2: his people. He promised Jacob that his seed would spring
- 12:49Speaker 2: forth a mighty nation and all nations would be redeemed.
- 12:53Speaker 2: He would not waver from that promise. Hundreds of years prior,
- 12:56Speaker 2: Jacob wrestled with God in the dead of night. Jacob
- 13:00Speaker 2: was flawed and filled with sin, but he clung to
- 13:02Speaker 2: God for blessing. So he renamed him Israel, which means
- 13:07Speaker 2: wrestles with God. Now the people of Israel would continue
- 13:11Speaker 2: to sin, be flawed, but cling to God for blessings.
- 13:15Speaker 2: They would continue to wrestle with God and he would
- 13:18Speaker 2: still bless them. A great plague fell upon Israel that day.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Yet in the midst of their punishment, there was hope
- 13:26Speaker 2: and mercy. God would not depart from them.
- 13:33Speaker 3: We open today's reading with Moses on the mountain alone.
- 13:36Speaker 3: He spent 40 days and nights hearing from God on
- 13:40Speaker 3: that mountain. And in that period of time, the people
- 13:43Speaker 3: began to worry. The Israelites could still see God's consuming
- 13:47Speaker 3: fire on the mountaintop. He had not gone missing in action.
- 13:51Speaker 3: But they began to doubt if Moses would ever return.
- 13:56Speaker 3: As we've already seen in their short time out of Egypt,
- 13:58Speaker 3: God's people were quick to complain. And a grumbling, complaining
- 14:03Speaker 3: heart can quickly become a wandering and even sinful heart.
- 14:08Speaker 3: The people tell Aaron to make them gods, little g,
- 14:11Speaker 3: to protect them and to provide for them. Barely a
- 14:14Speaker 3: month has passed now since God told them not to
- 14:16Speaker 3: have any God before them, any other kind of God,
- 14:20Speaker 3: lest they break his commandments. But somehow, in their sinfulness,
- 14:25Speaker 3: they wanted a God, again, little g, that they could
- 14:29Speaker 3: see and touch, even if this God was a fantasy.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Aaron doesn't resist. He gathers all the gold he can
- 14:36Speaker 3: find from them and fashions a golden calf. They build
- 14:40Speaker 3: an altar and begin to worship this counterfeit, phony God.
- 14:46Speaker 3: One sin births another, and soon the people engage in
- 14:49Speaker 3: all manner of revelry seeking to gratify their flesh. They've
- 14:54Speaker 3: all but forgotten the greatness and the glory and the
- 14:57Speaker 3: holiness of God. But God has not forgotten them. He
- 15:02Speaker 3: isn't blind to their sins. He tells Moses what these
- 15:05Speaker 3: people have done and that he wants to burn them
- 15:08Speaker 3: with anger against them, and even destroy them. Moses doesn't
- 15:13Speaker 3: excuse the actions of his people, but he does intercede.
- 15:16Speaker 3: He advocates for them. In an impassioned plea, he speaks
- 15:20Speaker 3: to God of the promises that he had made to Abraham, Isaac,
- 15:24Speaker 3: and Jacob. God hears Moses and turns from his anger.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Moses descends the mountain and destroys the calf and the altar.
- 15:33Speaker 3: He throws the stone tablets God had given him on
- 15:36Speaker 3: the ground and breaks them. Yes, he's angry, very angry.
- 15:41Speaker 3: When he confronts Aaron, rather than his own mistake, Aaron
- 15:45Speaker 3: tries to justify it. Here we see two very different leaders.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Moses was a strong leader who turned to God in
- 15:53Speaker 3: times of distress, but Aaron listened to the people, bent
- 15:57Speaker 3: to their will, and turned against God. It is a costly,
- 16:02Speaker 3: terrible sin. Moses enlists the Levite priest to go through
- 16:06Speaker 3: the camp and shed blood in God's name. 3,000 of
- 16:10Speaker 3: God's people died that day, judged for their unfaithfulness. Moses
- 16:15Speaker 3: went up to speak to God again and asked for
- 16:17Speaker 3: forgiveness for his people. God reminded Moses that he cannot
- 16:22Speaker 3: allow sin to go unpunished. There is always a price
- 16:26Speaker 3: for sin, and the price is death. For the scripture
- 16:30Speaker 3: says in the book of Romans, the wages of sin
- 16:34Speaker 3: is death. Because of sin, our names are blotted out
- 16:38Speaker 3: of the book of God, but because of his grace
- 16:42Speaker 3: and because of what Christ has done for us in
- 16:44Speaker 3: shedding his blood on the cross, we can have our
- 16:47Speaker 3: names now written in the Lamb's book of life. The
- 16:52Speaker 3: question is, is your name there? In God's words to Moses,
- 16:57Speaker 3: we find hope and an enduring faithfulness as well as holiness.
- 17:03Speaker 3: The people have sinned. There is a price to pay,
- 17:06Speaker 3: a terrible price, but God will not forsake them. He
- 17:09Speaker 3: will not abandon them. His presence will continue to be
- 17:12Speaker 3: with his people. God, we know that you are a
- 17:16Speaker 3: holy God. And this passage of scripture is a reminder
- 17:20Speaker 3: that we are to be devoted to you and you only.
- 17:26Speaker 3: May we trust in you always and obey you in
- 17:29Speaker 3: the power of your spirit. We do confess our sins
- 17:33Speaker 3: and ask that you forgive us of every sin through
- 17:35Speaker 3: your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen. Thank you for listening to
