For 35 years, a beloved sundial on the University of Maryland campus has been telling time wrong—until now. Installed in 1966 and moved during a 1991 renovation without proper recalibration, its markings were based on a different sundial entirely, causing month markers to be off by months. Discovered by astronomy chair Andrew Harris and nicknamed “Scan-Dial” by students, the error went unnoticed for decades—until a campus refurbishment offered the perfect chance to fix it.
