- 0:00Amber: Hello TPR Nation. This is Amber Kuhn. Thank you for
- 0:02joining me on today's Follow up Friday where I'll be recapping
- 0:06this week's episode highlights and action items. On Monday,
- 0:09Matt and Micah were ready to dive into client communication
- 0:13and answering client questions. Now everything they do is to
- 0:16help the client reach their goals. And to do this they have
- 0:20a process of success. Now where are they searching issues with
- 0:23client communication is when advisors are going outside of
- 0:27that process of success. Micah shared a script that he uses
- 0:30with his clients to help them understand why they do things a
- 0:34certain way. Now a side note that they pointed out was that
- 0:37Micah uses the number of years that he's been in practice as a
- 0:41point of credibility. But for listeners who are newer Micah
- 0:44recommends that you can use your firm's power and length of time.
- 0:48And if you're solo and you don't have that amount of time, then
- 0:51reference your clients and remove that time. If you're
- 0:54younger, you can also use it as a positive point, such as
- 0:58talking about the advisors who have mentored you or that you're
- 1:01going to be there for your clients throughout their entire
- 1:05retirement. Play to your strengths and be ready for
- 1:08questions that you're afraid of being asked, and makes sure that
- 1:11you practice and roleplay that. They also said that there will
- 1:15always be times where a client or prospective client asks you a
- 1:19question that you either don't know the answer to or you don't
- 1:22know how to articulate that answer. You can phrase your
- 1:25response in a way that best benefits the client, and it's
- 1:29okay to not know everything and see that you want to get them
- 1:32the best answer. Your job is to give clients confidence in their
- 1:36future. So anything that you might be doing that's pulling
- 1:39back from that confidence is a failure. Because you know a lot
- 1:43of things but you don't need to know everything. Matt and Micah
- 1:46said to consider how this plays out related to your processes
- 1:50and getting questions. So for example, if a client calls with
- 1:53a question if your team is trained to schedule an
- 1:56appointment and get additional information, that then gives you
- 2:00the opportunity to review the question and information and be
- 2:03prepared to give them a helpful response. They then talked about
- 2:07handling those unknowns because you don't know what the future
- 2:11will bring. So how do you talk to your clients about cash flow?
- 2:14Micah said if a client is overspending that isn't your
- 2:17responsibility, but it is your responsibility to tell them
- 2:21under a set of circumstances, how much money they can safely
- 2:24take out and not outlive their money. So you need to know and
- 2:28share the parameters and have a plan for keeping things on
- 2:31track, as well as being ready with a plan when things go off
- 2:35track. So again, when you're meeting with clients, the guys
- 2:38said that it's critical you're instilling confidence with your
- 2:42clients in the path that you're choosing. They delve a little
- 2:45deeper into when a client asks a question and you don't know the
- 2:49answer to it. If you simply say, I don't know, that doesn't help
- 2:52the client. Instead, you could say that it's a good question
- 2:56and that you want to do more research or reach out to
- 2:59additional resources to get a good answer for them. That
- 3:02inspires more confidence from the client in you because you're
- 3:06validating their question and letting them know that you're
- 3:09going to get an answer for them. You need a system in order to
- 3:13answer questions like that. Another thing to do is when a
- 3:16client asks question, respond by asking them to give you more
- 3:20information. That can help you understand a client's
- 3:23perspective on their question and learn more about what
- 3:26they're really asking. And of course, you need to set
- 3:29expectations for when a client will get an answer. Let's get an
- 3:33action items. Make sure you are practicing. Even if you don't
- 3:36want to you need to do more of it. You want to know your
- 3:39response as easily as you can say your name and the practice
- 3:43with other successful advisors get answers from those who have
- 3:46the practice that you want. On Thursday, Jamie was talking
- 3:50about lessons learned during this spring Surge but she kicked
- 3:53off by talking about hers and Micah's first jobs at Shilanski
- 3:57and Associates and doing things from the ground up, which for
- 4:00them was being the janitorial staff. And one of the reinforce
- 4:04lessons they learned early on, was that how you do something is
- 4:07how you do everything. Jamie stressed the importance of
- 4:11advisors doing things from the ground up so that you can speak
- 4:14from experience and also going through the client experience as
- 4:18if you are client. Because if you start thinking of yourself
- 4:21as an advisor and you think of yourself as a client, you'll
- 4:25start to have very similar questions to those of your
- 4:28clients. Jamie shared a couple of experiences about how having
- 4:31knowledge by going through something yourself. You can then
- 4:35share with a client in a way where you understand what
- 4:38they're thinking and their concerns and frustrations. It's
- 4:41one thing to talk at clients about a situation they're going
- 4:45through, but it's an entirely different thing to go through
- 4:48the same or similar situation yourself. You're not going to be
- 4:52able to have every one of your clients experiences but you can
- 4:55use reference and networking with others to help with your
- 4:59advice. Let's get to the action items. Jamie challenged you to
- 5:02pick a process in your office and go through it like client
- 5:06does step by step. This will give you the opportunity to
- 5:09understand the client's user experience and learn what worked
- 5:12and what didn't. And through this it also gives you
- 5:15credibility and trust with your clients. Whether it's your
- 5:19experience or you're sharing other clients experiences where
- 5:22you can help them understand that someone else has gone
- 5:25through a situation similar to theirs. This also allows you to
- 5:29refine the experience and make it better for the client. Jamie
- 5:32said use the filter of does this stuff add value and does this
- 5:36enhance the user experience? Everything you do either
- 5:39enhances or takes away from an experience. And lastly, with all
- 5:43of this, you want to make sure that you're training our team
- 5:46and others as well. Before we go TPR Nation if you're looking for
