- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back. We're live in studio here in Hartford. Dan Hurley,
- 0:05Speaker 1: the Yukon men's basketball coach with US two time champ
- 0:07Speaker 1: back to back, the heck of a run, twelve straight wins,
- 0:11Speaker 1: double figures and every one of them. But I want
- 0:13Speaker 1: to talk to you about the Big East Tournament because
- 0:15Speaker 1: I know that was important to you two thousand and
- 0:18Speaker 1: six or the last time Yukon won the regular season title.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Been a while since winning that tournament, and you took
- 0:24Speaker 1: care of business there and I know in the season
- 0:27Speaker 1: began you had those pictures up of the trophies we
- 0:29Speaker 1: want to win and the places we're going to go,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and it was meaningful to the players. But I thought
- 0:35Speaker 1: when you got to New York that was kind of
- 0:37Speaker 1: a peak in a sense of what you wanted to
- 0:39Speaker 1: do with this regular season.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Yeah, just I think your conference record. It's so hard
- 0:44Speaker 2: to win conference games, so I mean, especially Big East games.
- 0:48Speaker 2: The games are so physical playing in those games. I
- 0:51Speaker 2: think the coaches are awesome coaches in the Big East.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I think we got the best roster coaches of any
- 0:57Speaker 2: league in the country. So the games are so physical,
- 1:01Speaker 2: the environments are intense, you know, the so it means something.
- 1:06Speaker 2: If you could win the regular season or if you
- 1:07Speaker 2: win a high percentage of conference games, I think that
- 1:10Speaker 2: that says that you got very high quality. And I
- 1:14Speaker 2: mean the biggest tournament is just the best. I mean
- 1:17Speaker 2: it messes you up a little bit in the first
- 1:20Speaker 2: round game or the NCAA tournament, because the Biggest tournament
- 1:24Speaker 2: is like the next closest thing to probably like an
- 1:27Speaker 2: elite eight game, maybe a final four game Big East Tournament,
- 1:31Speaker 2: semi finals on Friday or the finals on Saturday. Biggest tournament.
- 1:36Speaker 2: There's like a it's down, you know, it's like the
- 1:40Speaker 2: environment's not as good.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yeah, so it's the world's most famous arena. Twenty eleven
- 1:45Speaker 1: was the last time Huskies won the Big East Tournament.
- 1:48Speaker 1: So another a great accomplishment. Number one seed. First time
- 1:52Speaker 1: the Huskies were a number one seed of all the
- 1:54Speaker 1: six national championships, which you know is a little bit surprising.
- 1:58Speaker 1: So then again, you got that mantle. It could be
- 2:02Speaker 1: a weight on your shoulders. A lot of number ones
- 2:03Speaker 1: have been knocked off lately after winning the title. You know, Kansas,
- 2:07Speaker 1: I can name them all, really, but that didn't seem
- 2:09Speaker 1: to bother this team.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean playing for seating is it's it's important,
- 2:16Speaker 2: and we talk about it. I mean we talk about
- 2:18Speaker 2: it with the team going into games. You know, we
- 2:21Speaker 2: set the game for them. They understand what it means,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and we talk about you know, the n Civil Tournament's
- 2:26Speaker 2: seating a lot conference standings. I mean, we don't like
- 2:29Speaker 2: we're very processed driven, but we're also we're very goal oriented.
- 2:33Speaker 2: I think, uh, you know, we talk about why why
- 2:36Speaker 2: these games are important. And for last year, we knew
- 2:39Speaker 2: it was worth pushing for to get that number one
- 2:42Speaker 2: overall seed, that going Brooklyn to Boston the Phoenix was
- 2:45Speaker 2: just set up perfectly for us. So we pushed so
- 2:49Speaker 2: hard for it every game. And it's not easy. I mean,
- 2:55Speaker 2: go eighteen and two in the league. But we lost
- 2:59Speaker 2: in the first around the tournament as a seventh seed,
- 3:03Speaker 2: and then we lost in the first round of the
- 3:04Speaker 2: tournament as a five seed, and then we won it
- 3:06Speaker 2: as a four seed and a one. So higher seeds
- 3:09Speaker 2: are better. Yeah, no, Corse, it's easier to win a tournament.
- 3:14Speaker 2: You know, you play worse teams the first game, and.
- 3:16Speaker 1: You know there's a reason they have those numbers.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Yeah, what you fight for every game, you know it helps.
- 3:24Speaker 1: This team last well, getting back to the last six
- 3:28Speaker 1: national champions, they all got bounced in the first and
- 3:31Speaker 1: second round. That's another indication of how much momentum you
- 3:35Speaker 1: had over these last two seasons, because it ain't easy
- 3:38Speaker 1: to go back and do what you just did the
- 3:40Speaker 1: year before and six different champs went down in the
- 3:43Speaker 1: first and second round. Be prior to your team.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Sex seven NBA players, you know, and then Joey and
- 3:50Speaker 2: Nahim and some very valuable bench players. You know, Like
- 3:53Speaker 2: we lost nine like awesome guys from two from two
- 3:57Speaker 2: different teams. But like bringing can men, it probably helped
- 4:01Speaker 2: us a little bit that we did lose some people
- 4:04Speaker 2: because then we did have some people that didn't have
- 4:07Speaker 2: a championship, like Cam. Cam had never even played in
- 4:11Speaker 2: the n LA tournament. So you know, it was and
- 4:14Speaker 2: we and you know, we all love Cam so much
- 4:17Speaker 2: that you know, you're you're like thinking a lot about
- 4:19Speaker 2: like we got to get one for Yeah, you know,
- 4:22Speaker 2: we knew Staph was going to be just a one
- 4:23Speaker 2: year player, and those guys were so awesome. It's like
- 4:26Speaker 2: we got to make sure we win one with these guys.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Getting back to the roster, we started talking about, well, obviously,
- 4:32Speaker 1: caravans so important. You talk about Samson Hassandi are he's
- 4:37Speaker 1: a grad guy now and and he finished strong for
- 4:39Speaker 1: you last year, and he's a defensive presence. I call
- 4:43Speaker 1: him the junkyard dog. Maybe you call him that. It's
- 4:45Speaker 1: something about that guy that you just want him on
- 4:48Speaker 1: your team. You want to be a teammate of him.
- 4:50Speaker 2: The hard playing guy. And you know, just the work
- 4:54Speaker 2: he put in between year one and year two. You know,
- 4:56Speaker 2: by the end of year one he was you know,
- 4:59Speaker 2: kind of still in the notation but not having as
- 5:01Speaker 2: big a role as we thought. You know, he could
- 5:03Speaker 2: have went portal or he could have just not worked
- 5:06Speaker 2: on his game. But then that summer he really worked
- 5:08Speaker 2: on his game. His past year, I mean, he saved
- 5:11Speaker 2: our he saved our butt a lot games at the
- 5:15Speaker 2: Garden Games, in the Encela Tournament. You know, Hossp played
- 5:18Speaker 2: great for us, but he's got to you know, he's
- 5:20Speaker 2: got to take a big jump. And some of it's
- 5:22Speaker 2: going to be a little bit by numbers, but it's
- 5:24Speaker 2: got to be more by example and you know, just
- 5:28Speaker 2: more as a leader and just you know, like playing
- 5:32Speaker 2: the way that we need him to play. You know,
- 5:34Speaker 2: he's gonna have a lot of talent around him.
- 5:38Speaker 1: And he's he's a been there, done that guy. Now
- 5:40Speaker 1: him and Caravan Amson got two rings. I just think
- 5:44Speaker 1: that experience has got to be invaluable. Now they have
- 5:46Speaker 1: to communicate to maybe the the young guys. Liam McNeely,
- 5:50Speaker 1: that's just coming to say, Abraham mod No weel.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Yeah, they need that. I mean I'd be if I
- 5:56Speaker 2: was one of them, I'd be walking around the locker
- 5:58Speaker 2: room like, you know, here we go guys. You know,
- 6:01Speaker 2: but it's not the most easy thing. You know, when
- 6:03Speaker 2: you have to step into that to that role, that's
- 6:06Speaker 2: like it's a big it's a big adjustment. You know.
- 6:09Speaker 2: We need that from them, you know, because there are
- 6:11Speaker 2: guys that want to be led. The sophomores. I think
- 6:15Speaker 2: they want to be led and we need it to
- 6:18Speaker 2: be has Alex and Sammy.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I hold that thought on the sophomores. We got
- 6:21Speaker 1: to talk about them because they're developing right now. Dan
