- Jaba: Hello everybody and welcome back to the Scout and the Speculator Podcast. This is Will Jarvis, also known as Jabba Cards, joined as always by my co-host Jeremy Brown of Perfect Game Baseball, more importantly, known as JGB, underscore cards underscore. And today we have a bunch of AFL content coming at you, and we're gonna kick the day off here with our traditional daily box score recap, look around, whatever you want to call it. Jeremy, what was going on in the AFL last night? Jheremy: Our box score breakdown, we're gonna call him. We like alliteration here. Zion Rose, Jaba: We should have. Jheremy: like he doesn't have Bowman. He won't have Bowman until draft, and then he's gonna be one of the chases. He went three for five again. He's now hitting three fifty seven, has a ten sixty two. stole two bases, up to five on the year. Like, he's kind of assimilating to Pro Ball a lot, lot, lot faster and smoother than you may have thought. He did miss time as a junior at Louisville. Always been a supreme athlete, like entered college as a catcher, ended up as a center fielder, I believe, played left field last night. Like, all the tools are there. He was kind of like a let's save some money at the top of the draft, which the Royals are known to do. But obviously he's very talented. We've had him in our stuff since he was 13U. And before we get into anything else, I told you that there was a question that I had. And With his performance and Rock Cholowski's lack of performance, is Cholowski still going to outsell Rose solely because he was a first overall pick? Jaba: Yes, hund hundred per cent. I think Jheremy: That's dumb. Jaba: whether or not well, are you asking me if I think he should or if he will? Jheremy: Not you. No, just what the market is gonna dictate. Jaba: I think, you know, like we've said, I I'm just not sure how many people are paying attention to the Arizona Fall League. I I've been surprised at how reactive prices have been. They've actually probably moved more thus far than I thought they would. Kind of across the board pretty much. But at the same time Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Jaba: I think your casual baseball fan who's maybe not a diehard Bowman head. I know a lot of people who every year they'll open a box or two of Bowman draft. I think for most of those people, it's like, okay, Rock Cholowski was the first pick. Everybody Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: was talking about how good he was for a couple of years. I'm just not sure Jheremy: On the cover. Jaba: how much those people know that he struggled. And even beyond that, it's kind of one of those where once you get it in your head, I think people are gonna be like, it was a small sample, you know, long college season, whatever. I think it's easy for people to hand wave it. again, very different answer than how I think it should go, but I I I I really don't see it being close, honestly. let me pull up the crack on here. Jheremy: I mean it it basically you're weighing you're weighing a really good AFL to a really bad high A debut, so Jaba: And I I mean, I guess my concern, like you said, Zion Rose was definitely picked higher than consensus. I mean, I'm seeing on MLB pipeline they had him as the 30th best guy in the draft. That feels a little low. But at the same time, we're between us and the people listening, this is like the most hardcore of the hardcore. Like we're the people that kind of know that context. But I feel like people before Bowman Draft, and I mean even myself until like a year or two ago when Bowman Draft would come out, I would kinda just look through the draft order, look at how pipeline Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: had him ranked, look at college stats, and then you're like Yeah. Jheremy: Just like international, right? Like just who's who are the big signs? Yeah. I don't know, I th I yeah. Jaba: You know, I I I I I think if anything, I you know, I think Von Lackey's gonna be a bigger name than Rose, even though he's a catcher. I think just the power speed combo there. I think a lot of people know how just unbelievable that guy was in college. I went out and saw him play against BC. That was ugly. Jheremy: Hm. Jaba: yeah, just just a great player. And I I think that there's so many we've talked about it before, right? With Bowman draft two years ago, obviously a special release. Last year was kind of the opposite where there were no big college hitters. And this year it's chock full of big college hitters. I mean, even like Derek Curiel, Lackey, Drew Burris, I mean, those are all names, even A. J. Gracia, those are all names that people really know and you're Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: hearing about you're hearing about if you were listening to like pre draft content. I just feel like Zion Rose falls into that glob of names with like Burris, Gracia, even like I don't know. But Jheremy: Yeah. I I just wanted to throw Jaba: That's kinda it. But Jheremy: it out there 'cause like he's plastered all over pipeline right now, his name's everywhere, people are talking about how special he's gonna be, how he's gonna be some chase for people, and like at a certain point you have to like take the blinders off right and be like, Alright, who is the better player? Obviously it's such a small sample size you can't do that right now. It's unfair one way or the other. I just wanted to kinda throw it out throw that out there to see if anybody listening kinda thought like, yeah, you know what? I think it's gonna be closer than what others think. So Jaba: Yeah. And I I mean for me, like We we've said the pipeline rankings, you know, you can disagree with them. I think there are plenty of valid Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: criticisms to be made, but you know, go try making your own list and see how it looks. what I'm read I'm I'm reading the blurb in front of me and I'm seeing stuff that he w has more ground balls than you'd like, he chases, he doesn't really walk. Like those are two things to me that just kinda always scare me, especially with older bats. Like if it's a high school bat, I'm not saying this is right or wrong. I'm just saying this is like my snap reaction to reading this stuff, like those are the things that kind of scare me. especially Jheremy: yeah. Jaba: with a college hitter going top ten where it's like, okay, it's not like he has three extra years to iron that out, or you know, Jheremy: Right. Jaba: the chasing is him just trying to make things happen like at a showcase where you know his eyeballs are on him. I'm not saying he's bad. I'm just saying like I don't know. E even with the AFL performance, I I like but like I I still can't sit here and tell ya Jheremy: Let's let's see if it's for real for a full year. Yeah. Jaba: you know, e even if he keeps this up, I'm not gonna be going crazy to buy his stuff. Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: I I have to look at stuff more. I wanna just basically have you tell me what to do, because you're basically the expert here. But as it stands right now He's good, but it's just not like and like I'm I'm not gonna buy rock at the at the price as Hill yet either. Jheremy: Right. Jaba: I mean I I think with Bowman draft, obviously you can do well buying the big names, but I enjoyed I think it's more fun and I think you can do better kinda with those second, third round college players or even the high school players, you're gonna have to wait little longer. But yeah, so that's my that's my ten minute answer to your question. Jheremy: Yeah. A simple no would have sufficed. The the Billy Madison answer. I liked it. Jaba: Yeah, peop people playing that way, shut up. Jheremy: Will Wellbin Francisco for five. Rare day there had three K's for him, still hitting four seventy one with twelve eighty three, but that is coming down. I don't think he's a flash in the pan, but that was like i i those four hit days are definitely further and far between. Walcott O for four, two punches. Paul Mathis had a hit. Good for him. A couple RBIs, a walk, Jaba: Still. Jheremy: a stolen bag. We'll take that. The the hit was a double. Jaba: It was double time. Jheremy: So we liked that. Aiden Miller had a hit. Ada Miller stole a bag. Aiden Miller got thrown out trying to steal a second bag. Paxson Kling still hit in 419 this year. what do you have? No hit day, but two walks. Dante Nori walked four times. Lou Brock, the catcher, had one hit. I believe that's actually No, Jaba: His name is Lil Brock. Jheremy: it's Julian Brock. I looked it up. I wanted to throw that in there though. And Brunagbayani had a double, your boy. Jaba: Yep. Jheremy: probably gonna be in Roman draft, I'd imagine, right? So Jaba: No, 'cause he no, he wasn't this year's draft. No. Jheremy: he wasn't? I thought he was a twenty six. No, he's a twenty he's nineteen. there it is. Okay. Jaba: No, the the Mets got him at the deadline. He was twenty five draft. He was late though. Jheremy: So yeah, so like Paxson Kling's another guy, like he stole the seventh bag, just kind of interesting. On the mound, we finally have something to talk about, and that is Justin Lampkin. Four and a third, perfect innings. He got roughed up his first time, only punched out four, but like gonna he he's not the overpowering type. He's the type to pitch to contact regardless. Rely on your stuff, movement, control more than you are just pure like pure stuff, pure velocity, pure just a A hellacious breaking ball. to see him kind of bounce back, still twenty two, six foot ten, two ten, or six foot four, two ten. Like, there's a lot there to like with Lampkin. He had his glow up this year, he had his Bowman already. definitely could have capitalized right after he I think he dismantled I want to say Biloxi. 'Cause like everyb Jaba: Yeah, it was someone in like May or June. Jheremy: everybody was there. It was all of the brewers guys. I want to say it was Biloxi, like Made A was there paying you. Fisher and he just like kind of carved through them like it was nothing. Jaba: Yeah, that's Jheremy: I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my boy Hero Wyatt out of twenty-three draft. Connecticut boy got the hold last night. We like that. Picked up a K, three hits allowed, two and a third innings, Calvin Ziegler, two thirds of an inning. had a walk, fifteen ERA, not a whole lot there. Jaba: Pretty good for almost. Jheremy: let's see. Jump over to the Mesa Solar Sox, who actually we didn't report on the score, lost nine to two. They had three total hits. Their hits came courtesy of Antonio Anderson and Cade Snell and whoever Ushe is, but Miguel Ushe, 25-year-old catcher. He also got stolen on, I think, six times last night. One, two, three, four, five. Six seven Jaba: Sorry. Jheremy: times. Seven seven seven bags off of So it looks like when Jaba: He heard us pumping up flu eling. He was like, I wanna b I wanna be like fluelling. Jheremy: That's right. When they're w when they're on, they're on. So just keep them going. Brayson Guevarez, 0 for 3, one punchy. Nazan Zanatello, two strikeouts and three at bats. My guy Mason White, two strikeouts and three at bats. A whole lot of nothing there, honestly. Antonio Anderson just picking up another hit. Good to see that out of him. hitting 333 with an eleven seventeen. Jump on down to pitching, and it's a whole lot of no. So Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: that kind of wraps it up. Jaba: Yeah, w one thing before we move on, I think it was yesterday I was saying a lot of the big hitters just aren't really doing a whole lot. And Sebastian Walcott's kind of falling into that category now. It doesn't impact my long term outlook. I'm not gonna sell anything of his. But he's now hitting two twenty six with a seven three OPS. He's a guy after he went I think he had an OPS over eleven hundred at double A. I know that there was a one at the beginning of it. I just expected more. I thought he was gonna be one of those guys Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: that just dominates. And like I've been saying, there's still plenty of time, not even halfway into the season, but he's kinda got my watch list where it's like I wanna see more, I expect more, and I don't think it's unfair, you know, to be a little disappointed by what he's doing. It's not saying he sucks or I don't like him anymore. It's just I I'd like to see him do a bit more. over to the Rafters and And the Scorpions, another big pitcher in this one, Jarlon Susana for the Rafters had a very Jarl and Susana line. Three innings, one hit, one earned, three walks, six Ks. I think that's just kind of who he is. You know, he's still wild, but with that VLO, Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Jaba: it doesn't really matter. All it takes is one tweak. I mean, we were talking yesterday about Miz and how even going into spring training in twenty twenty five, there was serious reliever risk and people were still very scared. I mean It's not like he came up and was like a sure thing by any means. So with Susana, it's just continuing to show the stuff, dominate guys, blow guys away, and you hope that the command kind of comes into picture here because he's not totally a spring chicken anymore. a lot of hits for the rafters at the top of the order. Demetrio Cresantes, he hadn't been playing well at all lately. He singled, walked twice, so nice to see him getting on base again. Jared Thomas. Very nice day for once. Two for three, three RBIs. He doubled. Chris Antes doubled as well. Just good to see him pull that OPS up to 663. Yasser Mercedes, two for three. He's still hitting 324-945 OPS. Really nice numbers there. Ofer for Andy Perez. And that was really the extent of the Bowman guys in the lineup. Yasser Soler, Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: 0 for 3. just continues to do a whole lot of nothing. On the other side, the Scorpions, Jet Williams, 0 for 2, but it did have a pair of walks, flew welling with another hit, another single. RBI walk in a K. Neymar Achoa hitting in the cleanup spot one for four with an RBI and a hat trick of strikeouts. Caden Kent, who I feel like hasn't we haven't really been saying his name much. I don't know if he hasn't been playing Jheremy: No, it's been a lot of empty box scores with him. Just like today's like couple at bats, couple of walks, maybe a hit, maybe a strikeout. Jaba: Yeah. O for two para walks. it says you're not recording right now. Let's just power let's just power through. we'll we'll see what there it goes. I'm just gonna keep motoring along here. Let me pull That back up. Nick Monasteri following up his two home run day with another one for three effort. OPSing 955. A little bit older, not sure we really care, but it's good to see him playing well at least. And then who who's this no, that guy's not a Bowman guy. yeah, no no other pitchers. Jeremy's thing is not letting him record, so I'm gonna let him figure that out. I'm just gonna motor into the next game here. Desert Dogs and Javelinas. I was all excited the other night because the Desert Dogs had a 10-run outburst. They got shut out last night. It was rain shortened, only a six and in game. Tako Roby for the Javelinas, Javelinas. Four shutout again. Four hits, no walks, four K's. He's been Unbelievable in the AFL. I think the whole issue with him wasn't how well he would pitch, but you know, if he can be healthy, so great to see him doing that. Brandon Butterworth, for two with a walk. Really just not a lot going on. Yerling confidant, is it? Yeah, Yerling Confidon. Jheremy Brown: Yep. Jaba: three for three with a Homer. And also doubled. But yeah, just not a whole lot going on in the javelinas side of things. Ty Harvey O for one again with a walk. He did steal his eighth bag, but he's hitting 138. So when he's getting on, he's making things happen, but that's obviously just not an acceptable batting average. In the desert dog side, just a lot more of nothing. Bonimer 0 for three pair of Ks. Carter Johnson 0 for 3 with a K. Chuck Davalon 1 for three with a single and a K. Johnny Severino one for two with a walk. No K is there. That's nice. Dylan Lewis O for three Max Williams O for two with a K. some guy was in our Instagram comments basically saying we're idiots for not talking about Max Williams. he's playing like shit. So Jheremy Brown: Okay. Jaba: do your research before you comment. That was a stupid comment. Isaiah Drake 1 for 2 with a K. Jeremy's one of Jeremy's picks with a 499 OPS. Nicely done there. he Jheremy Brown: Thank you. Jaba: he's in here. I'm not sure people can hear. even hear But I'm enjoying taking shots Jheremy Brown: I should be back. Yeah. Jaba: when can't it says you're not recording. but yeah, no that wraps up the AFL. Jheremy Brown: Hmm. Jaba: We got three more games going on today and then there's a league wide off day Friday. So yeah, we're gonna wrap up there. Let Jeremy figure out his technology. I just have to Okay. Well you got anything else about yesterday? Jheremy Brown: I think I think I'm good. Everything on my end says good. I don't have the problem. The yearling coffin on I'm like, is that the same kid from like twenty twenty one? And it is the same time Ellie had his first. This kid had his first. So I just kind of thought that was interesting. Just like the road less traveled. You're. Jaba: Shows you how young Ellie still is too. Jheremy Brown: Right. Yeah, because confidence only twenty three. the jarlens who son of the outcomes there kind of like book we're gonna come to expect with mcgill simon as well where they're big hard-throwing right-handed pitchers who even with the walks even maybe running up their pitch count a little bit because of those walks they have the physicality to withstand that and continue to power through an outing and as i guess you'd come cma almost to a suzana or vice versa despite the age discrepancy since CMA had a full year already under his belt, both of them great futures. Jaba: If you could only have one of them right now, you're starting an organization, you're a GM, you're taking CMA or Susanna. Yeah. Yep. I was shocked he made Jheremy Brown: I CMA just because of the age. I just- Jaba: it to high A. I thought he was g gonna be like a complex guy this year, just given the profile. I don't know if you think that's stupid. But Jheremy Brown: i mean he had things to work on but maybe it's like challenge on to like prove like a Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy Brown: like ninety nine's awesome but like you got actually pitch and Jaba: And I mean he he was awesome obviously. I'm just saying, like Jheremy Brown: Yeah. Jaba: reading the profile after draft before the season, I was like, yeah, this guy's a project and then they stuck him in single, he was lights out. Obviously Jheremy Brown: Yeah. Jaba: the walks were high, but even in high A he was good. And Jheremy Brown: Mm-hmm. Jaba: correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he young for his class too? Jheremy Brown: He was when he was drafted. Yeah. Super young. Like he could have read class Jaba: Yeah, he's a horse. Jheremy Brown: and been drafted a year later. He could have been drafted this past year. Cambridge boy. So. Yeah. Jaba: Yeah, he's not turning twenty until May. Six four two thirty-five. Yeah. I mean across A and high A, seventy-two innings, hundred thirty strikeouts. And yeah, the walks were almost one per inning at sixty-four. But I mean, the the those strikeout numbers are just stupid. Jheremy Brown: Yeah. Jaba: Yeah, people weren't hitting the ball against him. I mean people were hitting one fifty three against them. only lot three home hurts. Yeah. Jheremy Brown: Yeah, like his whip is up, but the whips up because of obviously the walks. So I think because of the hits. Jaba: Yeah. Obviously gotta fix the walks, but it's like that's really like the the o like it wasn't even hurting him that bad. Like obviously Jheremy Brown: Great. Jaba: the walk numbers are really bad, but he's still at a two ninety nine ERA and Jheremy Brown: You're still sub a walk in inning, so... We'll get there. Induce. Jaba: Yeah. I mean plenty like I know I know Jonathan in his first year or two, he was at six or seven walks. And I mean I I don't think there's any reason to, you know, Jheremy Brown: No need to fret yet. Jaba: freak out. Yeah. But yep. He's Jheremy Brown: That's all I got. Jaba: awful. Alright. Thanks everybody. We'll be back with some more content forthcoming. Thanks everyone for listening and let's go, Matt.
