- 0:32Hi, everyone. This is Liz Caslow with the
- 0:34Becker's Pear Issues podcast. I'm thrilled today to
- 0:36be joined by Surya Sacosio,
- 0:39chief medical officer of Essence Healthcare.
- 0:41Saria, thank you so much for chatting with
- 0:43us today. It's great to be here. Wow.
- 0:45There's so much excitement at this Becker's meeting.
- 0:48Yes. We're filming this right at our April
- 0:502026 roundtable. So I would love for you
- 0:52to introduce yourself and share a little bit
- 0:54more about your role and what you do
- 0:56at Essence Healthcare.
- 0:57It'd be my pleasure, Liz. So I am
- 0:59the chief medical officer
- 1:01at Essence Healthcare.
- 1:03We are a Medicare Advantage regional health plan,
- 1:06and we live by a mission. And our
- 1:09mission is to improve the well-being of our
- 1:12members and their communities.
- 1:14And we do that by providing the highest
- 1:16level quality of care that's affordable, but most
- 1:18importantly, personalized for each and every member that
- 1:21we serve. So from your point of view,
- 1:23what is the most pressing operational challenge that
- 1:26payers are facing right now, and what are
- 1:27you doing to address it?
- 1:29Let's keep it simple.
- 1:31Clinicians
- 1:32are overwhelmed.
- 1:33They're overwhelmed with the amount of information that's
- 1:35available.
- 1:36They're overwhelmed with the numerous priorities, and everything
- 1:40is number one. And, of course,
- 1:42the patient, the member comes first.
- 1:45So the way we approach this is by
- 1:47a true collaboration
- 1:48with our partners. We start with,
- 1:51how do you do things?
- 1:53How does your system or your medical group
- 1:56work? What's your process? What are your workflows?
- 1:58And we do our best to align with
- 2:00what they're already doing. Let's just amplify what's
- 2:03already in place. They know how to be
- 2:05good doctors,
- 2:06and that partnership with the PCP
- 2:08is critical so that our members receive, again,
- 2:11the highest quality care. And when we do
- 2:13that, we know it's
- 2:15appropriate
- 2:16utilization as well, and that patient has the
- 2:18opportunity
- 2:19to have the best experience that's navigated through
- 2:22health care.
- 2:23So there's a constant tension with keeping costs
- 2:26down and delivering a good member experience,
- 2:29especially when it comes to care coordination. So,
- 2:32how is your organization balancing that cost containment
- 2:34element with improving member experience and quality outcomes,
- 2:38and where are you seeing the greatest opportunity
- 2:40for that right now?
- 2:42We'll stick with the concept simple
- 2:44because we know that's something we can do
- 2:45every day. Simple math.
- 2:48Right place, right care, right time.
- 2:51That
- 2:52equals always the right cost,
- 2:55the right experience with the right outcomes you
- 2:58expect.
- 2:59So when we connect PCPs
- 3:01and patients together, the magic happens.
- 3:04The quality of care is delivered and the
- 3:06cost is contained,
- 3:08and what we care most about is the
- 3:10navigation or the path that that member is
- 3:13on. So when they have a PCP holding
- 3:16their hand through the process,
- 3:17be it a healthy individual who's looking for
- 3:20just healthy lifestyle modifications or someone with chronic
- 3:23disease who's juggling between medications
- 3:26and doctor's offices and finding their way to
- 3:28where they need to be. So simple math,
- 3:32just connect the people who matter.
- 3:34So building off of that, digital engagement and
- 3:37also transformation continues to accelerate across health care.
- 3:40So what technologies and AI are you deploying
- 3:43and prioritizing
- 3:44right now, and where are you seeing the
- 3:45most meaningful ROI as well as the strongest
- 3:47engagement with members?
- 3:49Well, where we're probably like everyone else, Liz,
- 3:52is that AI is engaging in so many
- 3:55different ways. I think we have a tremendous
- 3:57opportunity
- 3:58to look for all areas, be it operations
- 4:02or connection with members themselves or the health
- 4:04care.
- 4:05Where we're different
- 4:07are unique as how we're connecting with members.
- 4:10We have a partnership with Oura.
- 4:13You see my ring I'm wearing?
- 4:15It's a wearable device
- 4:17that is highly accurate when it comes to
- 4:19sleep along with heart rate variability
- 4:22and with physical activity.
- 4:24And this we know, the evidence shows
- 4:26that when people sleep well,
- 4:29they live well.
- 4:31So through this partnership, we have recognized that
- 4:35sleep disturbance
- 4:36impacts these individuals in so many different ways.
- 4:39So we're particularly
- 4:41focused on obstructive sleep apnea.
- 4:43And by connecting
- 4:45with the member
- 4:47to their PCP with this information,
- 4:50I do believe we've hit a magic formula
- 4:52here. And we have partnered with our physicians
- 4:55to inform the process, make sure we're giving
- 4:58them the information in a way that they
- 5:00receive it best that's clinically relevant and meaningful,
- 5:04and then the outreach occurs.
- 5:06So we have identified individuals at risk for
- 5:09obstructive sleep apnea.
- 5:11We get them screened
- 5:12and get them into testing when appropriate.
- 5:14So serving as a help to physicians in
- 5:17this process rather than making their life more
- 5:19difficult with the noise,
- 5:21Because most of us walk into a doctor's
- 5:23office and into the exam room with a
- 5:25wearable advice.
- 5:27So what are we doing with the wearable
- 5:29device, and how is this different,
- 5:31or is the way that works for us?
- 5:33So when it comes to implementing
- 5:35AI solutions and having stronger member engagement, building
- 5:39trust is a core part of that. So
- 5:41how do you see AI supporting member facing
- 5:43interactions
- 5:44while ensuring trust and quality?
- 5:47Well, stick with the theme of the obstructive
- 5:49sleep apnea example.
- 5:51The connection to cardiometabolic.
- 5:52It affects their entire lives,
- 5:55first of all.
- 5:56How we're using AI
- 5:58is when we recognize these disturbances.
- 6:01We have Tom through Lumeris, our parent company,
- 6:06an AI agent that is connecting back to
- 6:08the member to say, hey. I see maybe
- 6:11you're having some difficulty sleeping. Do you mind
- 6:13if I ask you some questions?
- 6:15The stop bang survey
- 6:17is the standardized screening tool to identify those
- 6:20individuals who are at risk for OSA, obstructive
- 6:23sleep apnea.
- 6:24And so AI
- 6:25allows us to free up the care team
- 6:28so they can focus on care in the
- 6:30exam room with the patient,
- 6:32identify those who are at high risk. That
- 6:34information that
- 6:35AI, Tom,
- 6:37our agent, connects with the members and discovers,
- 6:40then is immediately routed over to the PCPs
- 6:42for further follow-up.
- 6:44So we're using it as traffic directing
- 6:48and connecting in an empathetic way right out
- 6:50of the gate, but with objective information.
- 6:53So we keep the PCP at the middle
- 6:55of the conversation.
- 6:57Well, thank you so much for joining us,
- 6:59Surya. And so can you tell us anything
- 7:01else that might be on your mind with
- 7:03health payers,
- 7:04and anything with AI that they should be
- 7:06keeping in mind going forward?
- 7:07Well, a a story that resonates with me,
- 7:09I've heard from our physician leaders and health
- 7:11systems that we work with,
- 7:13is nothing should happen with the patient without
- 7:16the physician and the care team when it
- 7:18comes to AI.
- 7:19And I am
- 7:22so impressed
- 7:23and grateful to work with such phenomenal physician
- 7:25leaders
- 7:26who are putting ethics forward
- 7:29and ensuring as we partner that the right
- 7:32engagement is occurring with the right members at
- 7:35the right time to provide the best experience
- 7:37and best quality of care. Well, thank you
- 7:39so much for joining us again. Thanks, Liz.
- 7:41It's great to be here. Looking forward to
- 7:43the next couple of days and learning best
- 7:45practices from others.
