Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Northern Territory Police Commissioner. This is an Australia has
- 0:03Speaker 1: declared another curfew in Elie Springs. Our Australia correspondent is
- 0:06Speaker 1: Donna Demanishes with US Live this morning. Donna, what's the
- 0:09Speaker 1: latest here?
- 0:11Speaker 2: Yes, well, Michael Murphy did declare this snap curfew from
- 0:14Speaker 2: ten pm to six am. This is for three days.
- 0:18Speaker 2: This is because there's been a string of violent incidents.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Now the curfew applies to adults and children this time around.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Do we know that in March there was a youth
- 0:27Speaker 2: curfew that lasted a couple of weeks. I do believe
- 0:30Speaker 2: if I remember correctly. Now the Northern Territory Police Minister
- 0:33Speaker 2: Brent Potter says it's been a horror seventy two hours
- 0:37Speaker 2: in the Red Center in the Northern Territory. For instance,
- 0:39Speaker 2: an alleged assault of four off duty police by about
- 0:42Speaker 2: twenty people. A police officer was run over allegedly over
- 0:47Speaker 2: outside sorry, outside a bottle shop. And we also heard
- 0:51Speaker 2: that a forty two year old woman was allegedly stabbed
- 0:54Speaker 2: a Sunday lunchtime. So we know now that these three days,
- 0:59Speaker 2: this three day curfew has been imposed. We've heard from
- 1:01Speaker 2: the Chief Minister also Eva Fowler, and she says she's
- 1:06Speaker 2: saying that organizations need to step up, do more, and
- 1:10Speaker 2: she's calling for more resources. So this doesn't keep happening
- 1:13Speaker 2: quite distressing?
- 1:14Speaker 1: Yeah it is, and as you say, the incidents keep happening,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and so do the curfews. Let's go to Sydney. We're
- 1:21Speaker 1: a council. Well, what's going on with this artwork? Fecturing?
- 1:25Speaker 1: Am I right in saying Jesus and Looney Tunes?
- 1:28Speaker 2: Oh, this is quite bizarre. But there's been quite an
- 1:31Speaker 2: amount of outrage over this work of art. So the
- 1:34Speaker 2: Sydney Local Council has said that what's taken off the
- 1:39Speaker 2: art gallery wall? But there was this very vitriolic and
- 1:44Speaker 2: highly critical online protest about this artwork. So what does
- 1:47Speaker 2: it depict? Well, they're saying that it mocks the Christian
- 1:51Speaker 2: religion and even the Liverpool Mayor said that he wanted
- 1:55Speaker 2: to take it down. Effectively, the art depicted Jesus Christ
- 1:59Speaker 2: carrying the cross. His face and others around him were
- 2:02Speaker 2: overlaid with Looney Tunes characters. I think Jesus was depicted
- 2:06Speaker 2: as goofy, so it was described by some as playful.
- 2:10Speaker 2: On the other hand, the online anger was intense and
- 2:14Speaker 2: the criticism was quite scathing. The artist says, look, he
- 2:16Speaker 2: does like to stir a bit of a reaction, but
- 2:19Speaker 2: the level of vitriol and sheer volume of online abuse
- 2:23Speaker 2: was frightening.
- 2:24Speaker 1: He said.
- 2:25Speaker 2: He called the threats a not at all Christian. But
- 2:28Speaker 2: after about nearly eight weeks then the artwork was taken
- 2:31Speaker 2: down over the weekend.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Ah right, so it has been taken down Jesus. Maybe
- 2:35Speaker 1: Jesus didn't have a sense of humor. Thank you very
- 2:38Speaker 1: much for that. That is our Australia correspondent Donna Demo
