- 1:46war, Frank Race worked as an attorney, but he traded his lawbooks but
- 1:49the cloak and Dagger of the Oss and when it was over, his former
- 1:53life was over too. Adventure had become his business, the Adventures of Frank
- 2:00Race. And now we joined Frank Race for the Adventure of the Roughnecks.
- 2:20Will Sometimes people come back to you through the years. People you used to
- 2:29know or work with become in unexpected phone calls or chance meetings on the street
- 2:35of some strange town. Some of them you want to see and some you
- 2:38hope you'll never see it again. Jim Fallon was one of the former.
- 2:43We'd gone through law school together, played football together. One night in nineteen
- 2:46forty three, we'd almost died together in a parachute jumped behind Rummel's lines.
- 2:51So when Mark Donovan relayed Jim's call to me, I told him to ignore
- 2:53the red lights. I was full of the excitement that always comes from the
- 2:58thought of seeing an old friend or an there's a layer of the suite two
- 3:04oh one to four sixteen. I look at the names on that door.
- 3:07You balin forced, the Peabody, Morton and Laroche twenties a law Yes,
- 3:14Jim, Villains come along way, Mark, that guy has to come a
- 3:15long way when he spends every day walk until sixteen locks. That's good.
- 3:20No, no, he said you should come through the door mark four eleven,
- 3:24ignoring that it is marked private. Sounds tough sy good here, Hello,
- 3:32Jim Race man, it's good to see you. You know Mark Donovan.
- 3:38We spoke on the phone. How are you understanding having a little trouble,
- 3:40Jim race This isn't little. You can imprest the doubt out of your
- 3:45mind by mentioning the name of my problem. Martin Bayard Colin could be serious.
- 3:52My dead names from what is Martin Baird Cullins an old man who avoids
- 3:57publicity. You can't avoid it all together, though it's hard to avoid it
- 4:00to do who happened to be one of the ten richest men in the world.
- 4:03Oh, Lika, we handle his legal business race this this morning,
- 4:09though I've been wishing we didn't. He's kicking up his heels. No,
- 4:13somebody broke into his office last night. I opened columns. Will I want
- 4:17you to read the will race He voted himself, and it's an invitation to
- 4:21murder? Is it? Yes? Brief? Isn't it? pH one paragraph
- 4:30written with TNT Go ahead read it? It was my wish that my entire
- 4:35fortune passed into the hands of only one person. However, I list here
- 4:41the four persons who have been closest to me, with the provision that the
- 4:44entire estate go to the last one surviving. Last one survival you know,
- 4:50the four people named Hinjin. Yes, two of them granddaughters of his wife
- 4:55by a former marriage. Elle never had any children. Well, they must
- 4:59be Joan and on a Rigin. And there's Carry Bragg, she's been Culin's
- 5:02nurse for the past ten years. The man Bill Forsyth is Culin secretary.
- 5:08M hm, No, any one of them has to do become fabulously well,
- 5:12he is murdered the oust. What kind of money has turned them pretty
- 5:15nice people into murderers? Right? Yes? And here is tell me?
- 5:19Does Cullen know his will? Yes? And formed him immediately. I asked
- 5:25him to change the will at once, let it be known that it has
- 5:27been changed. But it won't do it Nope. And he told me not
- 5:30to call an investigator. But I can't hold still for that. I'd like
- 5:34to have a talk with Color. Will you clear a meeting, right,
- 5:39I'll do it while you're driving up to this place. The state is called
- 5:42gray Acres in Larchmonk. Gray Acres was appropriately named. The house had the
- 5:53grim aspects of a medieval castle, and even the grass and trees seemed colorless
- 5:58and drab. Despite the evidence, care Martin Beard Cullen mass the general atmosphere.
- 6:04Only his large, dark eyes glittered through a shriveled and pasty skin as
- 6:09he lay propped up by pillows. When he spoke, his voice belive it
- 6:14is night a year. My orders to fallon were quite precise. I want
- 6:19no investigation. I let you in so I could tell you that now get
- 6:25out. I'm not here in your behalf, miss Cullen. I just wanted
- 6:29to see what kind of a man it is who uses his fortune to try
- 6:31to influence murdered she I be the first to be murdered. If it does
- 6:36happen, it's still my affair. It's time for your medicine, mister Callen.
- 6:46This is one of my year's race. Shall we say that Miss Bragg
- 6:50is attendant. She doesn't seem to be out murdering anybody, but she is
- 6:56giving me medicine. Someday may not be exactly what the doctor orders, Isn't
- 7:02that right esterday. That's right, mister Kevin. She agrees with you.
- 7:06They see everybody agrees with the nerve man, especially when he has millions.
- 7:14They may get her claws on. Come on, Mark, let's get out
- 7:18of here. Yeah, the medicine the only thing smell. Yeah, there
- 7:26is a sweet old guy. Can you tell me how that prone with a
- 7:30lemon poison? Now to get the it's gotta have the rough neck and a
- 7:32drilling crew. Oil wild to me. Now he's looking oil and steel,
- 7:38bonds, stocks, cattle, you name it. These guys you're seeing pretty
- 7:42well informed about the old man with hello force at the end of your goal.
- 7:46Not too well, you warned him, and look for saf you're his
- 7:49secretary. Anybody been, especially Smoothie. Only me, Frankline. I have
- 7:56my finger on all of the old man's affairs. You know about the broom.
- 8:00I've always known about the world. You see race, I typed it
- 8:13in a race that old guy must be tired of living. And it is
- 8:16age I can understanding. Yea, at his age a man could be tired
- 8:20of a lot of things marks. But it can also be read seven like
- 8:24about what but not wanting things investigated. There has been a blue convertible.
- 8:30First down our tails as we left the estate. Well, I will lose
- 8:33it for quick. Now let's play it the other way. Slow down,
- 8:35Come to a stop at that billboard side right all I get out. I
- 8:41tend to be checking the tires. Get you. Here comes a car slowing
- 8:48down. I gotta stop. Do come on behind the side, get back,
- 8:58keep lowing. Now you must have winked. I got out of control.
- 9:05I'm betting let's follow him. Look Nick, one of the tires on
- 9:09my hip. Oh that's too bad. It's too dark to get the license
- 9:11number. Get all the numbers I need. Say that somebody doesn't want us
- 9:16around. Get a look at the driver. No, I just fired at
- 9:18the hood. Now let's get the tire. James. Pay another call?
- 9:22And who I'm joining? Leona Richards Collins granddaughters, Oh Brook, the things
- 9:35which live here are related to that whole money facts. I will bet you
- 9:37we are about to come face to face with a couple of pigs. Remember
- 9:41Margarets, They're only related by marriage. My name is Frank Race. I'm
- 9:48an investigator working pure and grandmother's attorney. Oh what's you come on? All
- 9:54it did? It's over the room. But not so dim that you couldn't
- 9:58see the large eyes, eyes that could reflect her easily. I mean,
- 10:03that is the habit of it, except for that her face was playing.
- 10:09But something about her said, if I ever come into your arms, you
- 10:13won't want to let me go. I don't want a drink or something,
- 10:16mister race, but I a household bunch of Skis that far well? I
- 10:20could run? Mind, man, if my grandfather sent you to cam you
- 10:24back to I won't leave my sister saying that it doesn't make you happy.
- 10:31I didn't know you'd lived a great moved out. Why because my sister sister
- 10:39had reason, and the reasons that nobody's business but mine. Another girls did
- 10:45in the doorway to the bedroom. She looked like leons. She was beautiful.
- 10:48Her eyes were deep and dark, but hard as punished on us.
- 10:54In a few seconds before I realized that I left, arm was hanging as
- 10:56nay, this is mister, I heard everything. What do you want?
- 11:01Your grandfather wrote a will and saw me your beaver open ahead of schedule.
- 11:07Oh let me in terms of the will might place your life in danger,
- 11:11your life and your system because you let me worry about that. But it
- 11:16doesn't name been this particular Will might also work in a vernise and make you
- 11:20the menace. Sounds like Grandpa's after with all divide and counter tricks. John't
- 11:24say things a good John, Please. I know you're fond of them,
- 11:28but I'm not do either of you on a blue convertible? Well, yes
- 11:31I do, she answered, I see. I tell me why this slay?
- 11:39What happened to your n I don't take my ANSWER's going to surprise in
- 11:43his debrace? Somebody shop? Look, Grace, what for we going back
- 11:58at Morseline? I can might be wise to hang around gray aggers for the
- 12:01whole. I think that John Richard's name was the one who was losing his
- 12:05potagrapy Frank the slowdown Marcus, the gates, the grey agors of the hand.
- 12:09There's more than the gate there. It's a guy with a shotgun blocking
- 12:15the road. You stay in the car. I'll talk to him. What's
- 12:20your hands dropped? Blair? Hair up? Oh are you what you are?
- 12:24My name's Race. I'm working for mister Collins, attorney's Oh ah,
- 12:28I told me he was here earlier today. I'm Blair, come black,
- 12:35oh man, Colin hide man God propter Colin hide, Nah, you used
- 12:39to work for him before you all never the trouble his friends for Blair?
- 12:46Do you have orders not to let me through this game? Well, I
- 12:48who'se my own judgment? Colins got a lot of faith in my judge.
- 12:52Well do my panser? Do I make camp out here on the road?
- 12:58Oh? Miss four five Latin first today? Prob Hello? Race? Right?
- 13:05How did come back? Just in? Yes? I had a hunt?
- 13:09You would I have a room prepared for you on the frint. You
- 13:11Latin man with forefry, have any objections, Blair? May? Why should
- 13:16not? I was just one ring, that's all. I'll drive up with
- 13:20your race. There's space for your car, all right. I think you'll
- 13:33be comfortable in here only smiles. Ali Cann would be comfortable on this Joy
- 13:39even went out for you. Before you go for something. I've got a
- 13:43question fire away. Where was Joan Richards here this afternoon when I was here?
- 13:46No? No, she wasn't what Leona was driving her book in for
- 13:50the boom. Yes, with a present from my grandfather last Christmas. A
- 13:54matter of fact, I got one tool race, and so did missus Bragg
- 13:58the nurse. You mean that's right. Clearly that all identical. I thought
- 14:09about it, and after we turned in, I dreamed about it. Leona
- 14:13had been here, but John was the one who being shot. It twisted
- 14:18fit, it seemed, goes off. Then somebody scream, come on,
- 14:37where's the light switch. I'll get it. Martin Beard Color lay propped on
- 14:43the pillows, the staring eyes fixed right on us, his withered old hands
- 14:46motionless against the white carpe. It wasn't the stir of death, though.
- 14:52The glittering eyes turned to the par side of the bed. I moved around
- 14:56and see what he was saying. I needed only one look. She was
- 15:00on the floor in a crumpled heap. And look Nurse Kerry Bragg, who
- 15:05wasn't going to win head of any game. She was dead. We'll return
- 15:16to the adventures of Frank Race in just about one minute. And now back
- 15:31to the Adventures of Frank Ray. The murder of Nurse Kerry Bragg narrowed the
- 15:39field of Cullen's potential airs the three Leona and John Richards and Bill forsythe I
- 15:46met the two, more of them had to die before there was any pair
- 15:48offf I sent Mark into town to get a few answers from Jim Fellham and
- 15:52his law office, and I started for a stroll around the grounds. When
- 15:58I'm telling where the shal had come from, dying behind the heads, flushing
- 16:00some birds, I got a whisper smoke coming from a clump of trees near
- 16:03the ivy covered wall. Got off a wild shot in return. Oh,
- 16:08shooting, Nah, you should know you're starting it? You ray? Yes,
- 16:12lets may here fly? Look Gregory, you crazy man? What you're
- 16:18shooting and made for? I wasn't shooting at you until you try to pick
- 16:21me off of that rifle. Come out of those trees with your hands up.
- 16:25Man, I wasn't shooting with you. You clipped the top of the
- 16:26hedge as soon as I dove anyway, I didn't even slay you. I
- 16:30got shooting the blue jays. Yeah, I come out holding the gun over
- 16:34my head. What makes you so hot about blue jays? Blame? Oh?
- 16:38They're bad, man, bad, gotting a treat and coops shot baggs
- 16:42dry they're on the chicken coops here. Wow, I guess we just got
- 16:47the habit from down the home. Yes, maybe, No, I think
- 16:51you were trying to scare me. Blame Oh, now why I would have
- 16:53wanted to do a thing like that. I don't know whether it's me or
- 16:56a bunch of innocent birds you're after. Take a tip, make your first
- 17:00shot content next time you start playing this game goes next time I want.
- 17:04Miss Mark came back from Fallen's office with information to turn on a few lines.
- 17:15His latest will of columns had been drawn up three months before and replaced
- 17:18a more say any reasonable request that had been popular on by the attorneys.
- 17:22The contents at the first will told me it was time to have him of
- 17:25a chat with Leona and John Richards. Please to believe in misters, I
- 17:29knew nothing at all of my grandfather here. I was the first one of
- 17:32the new one that's causing all the problems. His original will left you one
- 17:34third of his estate and the rest was to go to chairman. That doesn't
- 17:37surprise when mister Race the one is his favorite. When you should be interested
- 17:41in the contents of the new world, does it call for action not ordered?
- 17:45You're wasting your time, mister Race. I know the contents of the
- 17:48new will, and I didn't have to break into Fallon's office to learn them.
- 17:52Going out, Yonner likes to ask. You're so stubborn. Suppose something
- 18:02happened. Hey, this is no time to break up. I'm sorry,
- 18:07I'm so nervous enough. He didn't get those eyes caught me. No,
- 18:22okay, okay, time you never had practice, I mean murdered next time.
- 18:30I don't know. You don't believe anything. Sure it's true. I
- 18:36never danced. I never had a date name twenty four. Now go ahead
- 18:40and laugh at me. I'm not laughing. Grandfather never talked at any man
- 18:45with good enough clause. Why John's angry with him? That's why we love
- 18:48Gray, because every found out ahead. I can't what did your grandfather find
- 18:55out about? Maybe important? I can't tell you. I can't. That's
- 18:59all all right, biddy, you're secret and even give it. I don't
- 19:03know. I hope it doesn't cost you your life, all right about I've
- 19:17been walking around town about a dame judging about a look in the kissing,
- 19:22and I'll bet it chat le On and Richard school, brother, that's bad.
- 19:26Like, do you mean one of the girls killed carry a brag your
- 19:27way off base market? If they didn't do anything? That somebody starts and
- 19:32you're right, you can't see the more the old man's anger with him.
- 19:34My change of will in the spur of the moment, the change it within
- 19:37an hour. They know that, all right, So it'll be to them
- 19:41intended to lanch out of the whole ports. And they have killed coming prayers
- 19:42to make sure the will isn't changed. Wait a minute, like that,
- 19:48brag ain't did only at least one guy nice, least Bill forsythe coloring secretary
- 19:56that's gonna have a talk with Okay, what did you see? This is
- 20:03the one who came out of last night? What's that? Maybe it's in
- 20:08the library. That's where it would you know? We'll see you later.
- 20:11Meanwhile, I'm not gonna look around him. Hey, what are you looking?
- 20:18What do you know? Marcus? You go through that beer. I
- 20:21don't think you're writing disc any person do for sight something in order? Yeah,
- 20:30you wear highlight short look anything? Never mind that. Keep going.
- 20:36When they come in saying to bandy paper claws, here, I guess what
- 20:42is good? What isn't you? You were tiny dresses? This I never
- 20:52know? Mm hmm. I think the inscription down on the corner, getting
- 21:00you wouldn't be overlo mind love my own something else on the guy's pud.
- 21:08Jam is it the letters right? What's her? Nice darling? Missus Bragg
- 21:17says the doctor, gay, Dame, father, et cetera. I can
- 21:19make this tonight usual play in sign must taken. John put everything bag.
- 21:26It's amazing, means bloody old man. Column found out about Joan and Bill
- 21:30Forsyde, and he knows that carry Bragg was helping him, so he set
- 21:33up the will of stock. I'm not going to each other off. I'm
- 21:34afraid of that. You're gonna look around anymore. I'm just the classes.
- 21:37I want to find out the Foresyde has any weapons sitting around? You take
- 21:41that and I'll take this one. Grace, Grace, come, what is
- 21:48it? Boys? He's been hanging. For the next few hours, the
- 22:02number of police on the grounds of Gray Acres were almost equal to the blades
- 22:04of grass. I click permission took Mark into town for a visit to the
- 22:08morgue, only it was a newspaper morgue. To look. I have read
- 22:12the newspapers for the past ten years. My tomb is worn out twenty the
- 22:15page. Alright, alright, but what do you look? That's the item's
- 22:19dayline Texas it comes up you know, and nothing ever happened to Texas except
- 22:23an occasional mortar like this one. What is happenn eighty years ago? Anyone
- 22:30else? Fields? A wild cat killed and a gunfight by a guy,
- 22:33how a guy named Blair, Tom Blair. That's it, baby, give
- 22:37it to me here. Look, witness said Blair did the shooting and couldn't
- 22:42identified before the grand jury. No one, Yeah, but how could he
- 22:45not recognize your man? Heno? We must have been brought up? Look
- 22:48look at this the murdered Manner refused to sell Coulin and oilies, and Blair
- 22:52was in charge of Colin's drilling operations. You gotta get back to Gray's acres
- 22:56past I light. It's a little lad up, Glan wanted to make.
- 23:07I'm currying somebody hurry right, come ahid hair John Richards occurring, Look my
- 23:18grab the car and get out of here, and finally own Richard and stick
- 23:21to her. Bring it back here, ye here, Blair, let me
- 23:23grab it. What happened? Mike? Moms been multiplening? I thought by
- 23:29span the car? All right, put it down here, I'll break your
- 23:34dead right, yes? Years? Well, what's here? John? There's
- 23:40color? Now about this I couldn't, no man, we just hauler out.
- 23:44There's manner, and I think I'll go tell him. Saul will busted
- 23:47up Nancy store Will. Colin seem never to lead. His eyes burned at
- 24:00me as I came into the room. There was a little color in his
- 24:02cheeks. He made no effort to conceal the victory he was tasting. I
- 24:07had things figured right though I had one ace, the fifth ace in the
- 24:11deck, Joker, we had a race. There's been an accident, Colin,
- 24:18even though I was dream there things an accident. The the things that
- 24:21happened I planned to happen. Didn't anybody ever call you that one of your
- 24:25granddaughters is dead? Colin? This time I know it was an accident,
- 24:29mistake because the wrong girl who got killed? The wrong girl? Yes it
- 24:33wasn't John Colin, le owner is dead. His eyes went wild, and
- 24:38the veins at the side of his nick picking a flood of red spilled across
- 24:41the cheeks. Did you ordered the color of his mouth? And then he
- 24:44screamed, I children not to hurt the owner. You were support killed Joan
- 24:53and the other shut off. That's all I wanted Coling. He did kill
- 24:57John the owner's sake. Good. I'm afraid you moved toward me in a
- 25:07drilling roughnecks, squat and solid. I bought up man, but not as
- 25:11tough as this, and his hand over his heart as a diamond drill.
- 25:15I had to keep him up, no matter how hard I hit him.
- 25:17He closing in. He got his hand on my throat. A chill struggled
- 25:22quest I was no good. Suddenly I got tired, blacked out across the
- 25:36centuries and not of time and space. I came aloud again. I didn't
- 25:40know whether I was in this world or the next, because the dead eyes
- 25:42of Martin Beard Cullin stared down him from where he had slumped across the edge
- 25:45of the bed, seized with a panal heart attack. Then I heard a
- 25:49welcome voice that belonged to the living. Come on, come on you,
- 25:52he'd wake up? We did you him? Hi, strolet? Where's God?
- 25:59Look? I burnt me in wrench when I wat them with him.
- 26:00Now, you couldn't have gone all the way back in the town and come
- 26:04back. Not no, you see, I got to thinking. I tint
- 26:07around because I think it the plan was the heavy, So how could he
- 26:10only get hurt if he was here, I think the old man was.
- 26:12He was in the World of Covers on thirty one st I call it cops
- 26:18while he was out, and he on the call here. I told her
- 26:19the whole story, and she wants to say you so. It's good,
- 26:22Margaret. It's very good because I want to see her too, should be
- 26:26one of the richest girls in the world. When Colin's will goes to Promin
- 26:30and her education has been woolbuy exactly. You have to be taught how to
- 26:33protect it, and you're going to teach her how. I ain't going to
- 26:37be shooting bluegird Boy. The Adventures of Frank Race starring Tom Collins with Tony
- 27:06Barrett as Mark Donovan comes to you from Hollywood. Others heard in tonight's cast
- 27:10were Gloria Blondell, Frank Lovejoy, Michael A. Barrett, and Wills Herbert.
- 27:15This series is written and directed by Buckley Angel and Joel Murcott. The
- 27:18music is composed and played by Ivan Ditmars. Be sure to be with us
- 27:23again at the same time next week for another dramatic chapter in the Adventures of
- 27:29Frank Race. Art Gilmore speaking. This is a Brucel's production. Welcome back.
- 28:11Well one of those bizarre murder plots that shows sometimes quite not quite right
- 28:18up in the head, but well solved by Frank Race. This is definitely
- 28:25a bit of an unusual situation in terms of the midcast change. Not unheard
- 28:34of, but certainly unusual in terms when you have a star changed in one
