- 0:00Track Cuss the Galaxy's Most Unpredictable Star Trek Podcast. Hello, and I'm one
- 0:29of your hosts. Dan Lombardo with me as always, Daniel Reyes with me
- 0:35when he feels like it. That's right, Uh Scott. Uh, what's
- 0:39the other guy's name? Strong? Something some Yeah, strangely miss strong a
- 0:45strong face? Yeah, face Facebook. I don't know what is Davis?
- 0:50Where is? He's on a cruise or something tonight. You know he had
- 0:54a he had a rough night of partying, is what I understand. Oh
- 0:57yeah, all right, he's just messages. As soon as I get over
- 1:02the hiccups, i'll be I'll be on. Oh okay, he's gonna grace
- 1:06us with his uh, with his presence. I guess the cruise the cruise
- 1:11ship he's on has that like what's that? What's that elon musk like Skylink
- 1:15or something? It must oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I
- 1:19was thinking the hiccups for a negotiating tactic for a bigger contract. Yeah yeah,
- 1:25well, you know, right, exactly exactly right. You know he
- 1:33needs he needs to learn that. Uh, you know, I make I
- 1:37make the big box. That's right, you make you make a little less
- 1:40than I do exactly and what's left over? You know, you can ask
- 1:45about it. But it's great. How you doing, man? All right,
- 1:51yeah, I'm okay. Dressed up after the convention and all that craziness.
- 1:56Yeah, yeah, it was a long weekend. I mean, it
- 1:57was a good weekend. It was it was fun. But yeah, yeah,
- 2:02I've got some pictures that we can share with the people. Oh cool.
- 2:08To be fair, I took these from Devall's Facebook page and in bronze
- 2:13because we didn't really take much, I know, we were so yeah,
- 2:19we're new at this after five six years. Yeah, all those people we
- 2:23interviewed, that's right, we got microphones, interviewed, talk to a million
- 2:29people. Yeah, talk to a million people. Friends. Yeah yeah,
- 2:36there's us with at our booth, with our side mm hmm yeah. And
- 2:40then uh there we are all together with his girlfriend as well. You guys
- 2:47needed a moment apparently, yeah. Yeah, well it was supposed to look
- 2:52like the joke I was making here is, oh, let's make it look
- 2:54like a prom photo, and it just that's right. It looks my hands
- 3:00did a moment alone. My hands would have needed to be a little lower.
- 3:05And you know, I like the guy, but I don't know him
- 3:07that well, right, you know, before before I do that, you
- 3:13know, maybe next year, maybe next year, next year, that's right.
- 3:17And then we all went out to uh was David Busters Dave Busters.
- 3:22Yeah, so there's there's Bronson and his family and us and deals and yeah,
- 3:27so it's pretty great. It was pretty great time. I had a
- 3:30good time. I had a good time. You had the uh I didn't
- 3:34get to do it, but you got the chop cheese. That's right,
- 3:38what I did. What's what's the what's the verdict on the chop cheese?
- 3:40I mean I saw that I did make my own, so you must have
- 3:46you must have felt like that was a worthwhile endeavor. I mean I I
- 3:51liked it home. Yeah, let me let me put up the picture.
- 3:54I went to my Facebook page to get it. So the top image is
- 4:00the actual chop cheese. The bottom one is my attempt at home. You
- 4:05know what, man, it is a phenomenal sandwich. I loved it.
- 4:10I absolutely loved it. I did talk to the to the cooks, and
- 4:15I asked them, you know, kind of like, how could I replicate
- 4:18this because I live in Idaho and there's no way I can just come back
- 4:21here again m hm. And they told me what the trick was, that
- 4:27I needed to get something called a dobo sauce or and so I bought some
- 4:34because you can get that in Idaho. Yeah, were you familiar with Were
- 4:39you familiar with? I had heard of it before, yeah, yeah,
- 4:42all right, And so so I bought some and and I made my chop
- 4:45cheese and honestly, I would say my home version is about ninety five percent
- 4:50accurate. Okay, I used different bread, yeah obviously, yeah, but
- 4:58yeah it was it was really good. So I've never had a dobo seasoning.
- 5:01But the I remember the commercials from the nineteen eighties. You know,
- 5:06I don't know if you remember it, but you know, this is great.
- 5:10Oh this is great? What you know? What is this? And
- 5:13Mom's like all I did was a dobo the chicken and yeah, she's just
- 5:16throwing a bunch of this stuff on there. So never had it. Yeah,
- 5:19but you know, I remember thinking, wow, those those white people
- 5:23are really excited about that. I should probably I should probably try that.
- 5:27Sometimes. Well they sell it, yeah, what's that They sell it at
- 5:32the Hispanic grocery store here. Yeah. Yeah, so that's where I got
- 5:36it. So it's it's beef a dobo's. Yeah, that sort of cheese,
- 5:45you know, I mean at at at the at the bodega I went
- 5:48to, they had any kind you pretty much wanted, but I put cheddar
- 5:50on mine. Okay, you know, it's just shredded cheese, and then
- 5:56I had peppers and onions chopped up iced and then just all you know,
- 6:01they grilled it on a flat top. So if you have a flattop at
- 6:04home, great, you're you're already there. They toasted the buttons on the
- 6:10flat top as well a little bit of shredded lettuce and onions and put it
- 6:15all together and it's it's really tasty. Yeah, okay, all right,
- 6:20cool, Yeah, I highly recommend congratulations on flying straight across the country for
- 6:29a sandwich. That's right, a five hour flight just for a sandwich.
- 6:32Absolutely. Which So speaking of chopped cheese, that that kind of reminds us,
- 6:38you know, we should bring up. We recently launched our new merch
- 6:42store in partnership with Chopped Teas, who we found out through Dicky Bird.
- 6:46That's that's why he named his show is Shop Shop. This was the chop
- 6:53Cheese. So yeah, these are our new our new merch. You know,
- 6:57if you go to trek cash dot com and click on the store,
- 6:59it'll bring you here. But yeah, I like that. That's that's that's
- 7:03tight. Yeah, yeah, that that seems to be the popular one.
- 7:09It's all high quality stuff. The cool thing is these are the prices that
- 7:13you pay, so taxes has been figured in in in a lot of the
- 7:16uh, North American and European countries. It's for shipping. So yeah,
- 7:24it's pretty great. And and uh, from what I understand, the they
- 7:28ship almost directly from those countries, so like the turnaround time has been really
- 7:31quick. So if you're you're you're in Europe or Australia or you know,
- 7:36North America, it's pretty quick timing to get your stuff. So now what
- 7:42if you're always on a cruise, where do you have your your teas shipped?
- 7:46I believe the drone sends it out at that point, yeah, and
- 7:50drops it off and just you know, drop it. Yeah all right,
- 7:54yeah, we'll have to find out, you know, just in case you're
- 7:58always on a cruise and not able to participate in other things, you might
- 8:03need to know how to get your trek cast march. That's right, that's
- 8:07right, yeah, so pissed. Oh here he comes, here he goes,
- 8:13it's loaded up. Oh oh, he's got stern dad face. He's
- 8:18got a stern dad face. There he is. Good morning, Hey,
- 8:24good morning man. How are the hiccups? Uh, hopefully they're gone.
- 8:30Okay, okay, yeah, they say you should come above deck to get
- 8:37rid of those. Oh okay, okay, gotcha, got ya? Yeah,
- 8:41yeah, I can only imagine the crappy guys been talking. Yeah,
- 8:50I have no idea what you're talking about. Uh so I noticed I noticed
- 8:56the glasses. Yeah, a lot more, Yeah, lately, and it's
- 9:01I'm older thinking. Yeah, but it's like you're moving from you're moving from
- 9:11riker to director. You know when you see Freaks now you know director Jonathan
- 9:18Frakes, He Jonathan Frakes. I thought that the rady's progressing by like the
- 9:24time that Strange the Worlds comes out, we have seeing I dog wow.
- 9:31Wow. Yeah that's right. Oh, so are we done? And we
- 9:39we are? We are never Well, it's been a good show, everybody.
- 9:45We'll see you guys next week. Uh. I just realized I didn't
- 9:48turn the lights side of my office. Yeah, right back, Okay,
- 9:56Well, I don't think he realized when he signed up for this position that
- 10:01you know, I used to bust Chad's balls pretty heavily for sure. Each
- 10:05episode he slides out, This guy slides it. That's how it goes,
- 10:13all right, Yeah, oh, what's the shirt today? So we got
- 10:20from J. J. Abrams the original Star Trek movie. Okay, so
- 10:28this was a gift from somebody I don't remember who give you. It's hard
- 10:39to remember them. So, so what you've been up to. We haven't
- 10:45talked to you in a little while, I know it. Yeah, yesterday
- 10:48we did my uh, my son's graduation party. Uh So he graduated high
- 10:52school and moving on to college in the fall. So that was a lot
- 10:58of hard work and mostly by my wife. And yeah, it was a
- 11:01good time. Can't you just compete in the state too, Yeah, yep,
- 11:05yep. Uh. He did track and he's gonna go on the track
- 11:09in college. So it's been a bit a few weeks for him. Very
- 11:13very much, so very much so right on. Yeah, we got the
- 11:18uh our cruise coming up week after net that's right, the three hour cruise,
- 11:26right, just like the uh just like yill three our cruise. Yeah,
- 11:31why is he laughing. What do you look at yet? He has
- 11:39crap talking? Ten minutes before you came on the show, about eight and
- 11:45a half of it was you know, yeah, I bet, I bet.
- 11:50I can't wait to listen to it. It's fun. Anyways. So
- 11:58did we watch the uh lit Our Burden documentary? I did, No,
- 12:03I didn't see it. I didn't see it. Hey, am I looking
- 12:09at my name? Did I frame that? Just right? That's right?
- 12:15Our bird? Oh wow, I gotta look through the right lens. I
- 12:22got bifocals on. So okay, boy man, So what kind of scene?
- 12:28Iye, dog? Are you don't want then? Yeah? Yeah?
- 12:39Oh no, no, no, no, no, keep keep keep crap
- 12:43talking on me. Okay, that's it. Never we sprinkled that throughout a
- 12:54little little all right. So our first news story comes first today from the
- 13:00New York Post, and I don't know if you guys have seen. We
- 13:03took a week off. So things have have developed in the ongoing saga of
- 13:07who's going to buy Paramount and the latest the latest turn has been uh Paramount
- 13:15has completely backed away from Skydance's proposals and negotiations. So we're back to square
- 13:20one, baby, yeah, Sony is still in there, but basically a
- 13:30lot of people are left scratching their heads, and now all the opinion pieces
- 13:33are starting to come out, going what the hell is going on with paramount?
- 13:39Does Shery Redstone even know what she's doing at this point? And it's
- 13:43fun, it's fun. Yeah. What's really funny is they have pointed out
- 13:48that in this article, Sherry Redstone inherited the company, and sky Dance is
- 13:56a company that is basically funded by another billionaire's sun. So it's two children
- 14:07of billionaires who never had to build their own companies are now kind of like
- 14:13fighting each other to figure out who's gonna who's gonna take over barramund I want
- 14:16to buy CBS? No, I want to buy CBS. Yes, yeah,
- 14:20it's kind of that, yeah yeah. So meanwhile their parents are like,
- 14:26we have CBS at home, right, right, literally literally we have
- 14:30CBS at home. Yeah, so that's neat, but yeah, Sony's still
- 14:35at it. But this article specifically says like, after Sony and Skydance,
- 14:41no one else has left. Nobody wants this thing, So what are you
- 14:45gonna do? Lady? At this At this point, I'm kind of hoping
- 14:48they chop it up. Yeah, yeah, that may happen. Man,
- 14:54that may happen because in the big in the big scheme of things, you
- 14:58know, Paramount isn't Star Trek, right, and people are when these people
- 15:05are looking to buy Paramount, Star Trek is not better. Excuse me,
- 15:09Star Trek is not the top of their mind. So if they split it
- 15:15up and they sell it off separately, that entity that buys it, it
- 15:20is the top of their mind because they're specifically buying that. So at this
- 15:26point, I think that's a really good point. Yeah, I think that
- 15:31that's what would be best for us. I guess we'll see so that the
- 15:35saga continues, but look out for a lot of these opinion pieces to come
- 15:41out in the next few few weeks because nobody knows where this train is going.
- 15:46So yeah, speaking of trains, and we don't know where they're going.
- 15:52Our next news story comes to us from trekmovie dot com, and we
- 15:58are getting a little bit of teasing about what is up with the next season
- 16:02of Strange New worlds Anson Mount says that season three will take bigger swings than
- 16:08a musical episode. So does that mean that's a bold statement? That is
- 16:14a bold statement? Well, remember they they said that last time when season
- 16:18two was being shot, they said, we're taking a lot of big swings,
- 16:22and it was vastly different than season one. So does that mean season
- 16:27three will be different from what we've seen before? Probably? Big swings tends
- 16:34to translate into I think the internet is going to be mad at us said
- 16:38a few things. That seems to be the new translation. Yeah, so
- 16:44what they're trying? Uh, Personally, I'm hoping for strange new worlds,
- 16:49in strange new worlds, in moregs. You know, let's get back to
- 16:52exploring. But you know that'd be good. Yeah, what are you guys
- 16:57thinking? You know, season one was a nine out of ten, season
- 17:04two was eight out of ten, and I just don't want them to go
- 17:10in that direction. I don't want it to get worse, right, right,
- 17:14So you know, I guess we'll see. I mean, if the
- 17:18company doesn't know where it's going, how can we expect the shots set?
- 17:23Yeah? Yeah, well, and that's that's a good point. You know
- 17:26what what with the company, the company's future, you know unknown, how
- 17:36are these studios reacting to it? You know when they're producing content, right
- 17:41because you don't know, like who's you going, who's going to be your
- 17:45boss in two years right by the time this comes out? So yeah,
- 17:51it's rough, but yeah, I guess we'll see sometime next year. They
- 17:56just basically finished shooting everything. So, speaking of shooting, our next news
- 18:03story comes to us from TV insider dot com and it is now official.
- 18:07We have my first lead Academy and it's Paul Giamoni and do not give him
- 18:14more low. I've seen so many Sideways funs and jokes, you know.
- 18:19Okay, I'm glad you brought that up. Yeah, Sideways is a movie
- 18:26that It's one of two movies in my entire life I ever walked out of
- 18:32the theater because I was bored. Oh wow, okay. The other one
- 18:37was Batman Forever okay, okay. I hated Sideways, okay, and it
- 18:45left a bad taste in my mouth for Paul Giamatti. Mm hm. So
- 18:49you know we'll see. You didn't like him as the Rhino, Yeah he
- 18:59was. Uh no, I didn't. I haven't liked him anything he's been
- 19:03in since. Oh no, no. So one of two movies that I
- 19:11walked out of, okay was Batman and Robin Oh wow. You know,
- 19:17I'm not saying Batman Forever was was a good movie. But yeah, when
- 19:22you put it side by side with Batman and Robin, they're the same movie.
- 19:26It's It's Citizen Kane. Yeah right, yeah, yeah. So we
- 19:34don't know much about his new character. We're told that he's going to be
- 19:38the villain, then he'll be an admiral. It's star check pretty much apparently
- 19:45has some sort of connection to the to the Academy. So I don't I
- 19:52don't know, man, I guess we'll see what they have shaped up.
- 19:55But I can't imagine being mad at a school, like, especially in that
- 20:00time period, like just go somewhere else. Yeah whatever, I don't know.
- 20:04Yeah, I guess we'll see. So and then are are you?
- 20:10Are you? Are you? Are you excited about this show? Me?
- 20:15Yeah? Uh, well either of you, both of them? Yeah,
- 20:19no, No, I'm not excited. I'm curious. And I will only
- 20:26say that because I I know Tawny Newsome is very much a fan, and
- 20:33she's in that writer's room, and I'm very curious to see what she helps
- 20:38come up with. But I'm wondering how much of her voice will be in
- 20:42the show, or if it'll be just they're gonna do what they want to
- 20:48do, and she eventually just you know, just follows them. Yeah,
- 20:52she has some chops, right, yeah, and she and she seems to
- 20:57know things right like yes, yeah, so she's a Star Trek fan.
- 21:03She's funny. From what I understand, they do a lot of improv on
- 21:08lower decks and she's she's a big part of that. So yeah, well
- 21:15we will see, I guess, but I'm not. I wonder what direction
- 21:19they're taking that show. Then, I'm like, if they if they hired
- 21:22her, are they taking it in a I don't know me a modern family
- 21:27direction. Yeah, that's that. That would be interesting to know that.
- 21:33That was actually, uh one of our big questions this week was what what
- 21:37kind of inspiration do you want for Academy? And I had put up a
- 21:42few options, like, you know, the current school type shows are like
- 21:48a Euphoria. Oh here it is, I'll bring it up. You know.
- 21:53I had a few different options up for people, so like Euphoria is
- 21:56the big one right now, that's the big teen show. Then I had
- 22:00like a House or Saved by the Bell or de Grassi, like those are
- 22:04kind of figure kind of all different types of shows. And you know,
- 22:07get what people thought. A few people say they wanted something more like Boy
- 22:12Meets World. I guess something more like a dramatic comedy. That's the direction
- 22:18that I think they're gonna go in. Yeah, I could see that.
- 22:25I think Dan put or no Scott but sky high. So uh. I
- 22:33had a few people put in the Wonder Years, you know, start singing,
- 22:38Dan, Yeah, what would you do if I sang out of tune?
- 22:45We'll just stand up and walk out on me. I mean yeah,
- 22:53I thinking if they did something more along the lines of like Scrubs, like
- 22:56that kind of dramatic comedy, they might have something. But I'm I don't
- 23:04know. I don't know, man, Like I'm I'm not that excited about
- 23:10you know, a teen star trek show. Yeah, oh yeah. We
- 23:17had the phone going, oh yeah, sorry, this was my wake up
- 23:19reminder from my phone to let me know that I'm about to do treck cast
- 23:25great when when we aired at eleven o'clock, that's time. Yeah, it
- 23:30sounds like it's a little bit till till people realize the new time. But
- 23:34cast now at a new time, that's right, that's right. So yeah,
- 23:42I I am not excited okay about this show. Yeah, And I've
- 23:52been devoting a lot of time to thinking to myself, when when do you
- 24:03get off the boat? You know, if if you don't like what's happening,
- 24:11at what point do you say? Why am I? Why am I
- 24:15watching this? Right? And you know, there's a part of me that's
- 24:22like, you gotta support the franchise. You got to support the franchise.
- 24:26But then there's another part of me that's like, yeah, but if you
- 24:29keep supporting it when they produce garbage, you're going to get more garbage,
- 24:34right, And you know, like like I'm at the point right now.
- 24:40Star Wars Acolyte is three episodes in. Yeah, first two episodes were okay,
- 24:48they were not they were not good. They were okay. That third
- 24:52episode was straight up trash. It's absolute trash. You know, they said
- 25:00six months ago, we're not gonna do this kind of stuff anymore. We're
- 25:04going to concentrate on just telling good stories and giving people what they want,
- 25:08and they completely reversed course. And so at what point do you stop being
- 25:18curious and say, I'm not I'm not going to consume this content because this
- 25:25content is not good. I'm not going to finish this. I don't care
- 25:30how this story ends. Because here's here's the thing. If you watch it
- 25:33just to watch it, and the day that, the day after the last
- 25:37episode airs, you you say, I'm gonna cancel my subscription to Disney Plus
- 25:42until uh Mandalorian season four or whatever comes out. They expect that when when
- 25:51people cancel in the middle of a season, that sends a that sends a
- 25:56message that you know, they it's all you know, their algorithms know what.
- 26:02I've watched their algorithms. No, I've watched the original trilogy on Disney
- 26:07Plus a thousand times. I've watched the sequel trilogy one hundred or the prequel
- 26:11trilogy one hundred times, and I've watched the sequel trilogy twice. I've watched
- 26:17The Mandalorian over and over again. I watched Boba Fett two or three times.
- 26:22I watched Ahsoka twice. He canceled halfway through accolyte mm hmm. And
- 26:29I think we need to stop like just watching it for the sake of the
- 26:33franchise. So that's my that's my soapbox. I'm gonna get off. I
- 26:41guess I'm kind of I guess to tie this back to Star Trek. I'm
- 26:45kind of saying I gave Discovery five years of my life. I'm not giving
- 26:52I'm not giving Academy five years of my life. If it's garbage, you
- 26:59know it's garbage. It's garbage. I got better things. Let me give
- 27:03you an idea of let's do the big picture kind of looking thing. So
- 27:10I went on Google Trends while you were talking, and I just typed in
- 27:14Star Trek, Star Wars, and the NFL. Right, And this is
- 27:18the interest over a year, twelve months, right, And the blue line
- 27:23is Star Trek, the red line is Star Wars, the yellow line is
- 27:26the NFL. The way Google trends works, just so people know, one
- 27:30hundred is the most popular it's been in relation to where it's been before.
- 27:37Right, look at how flat Star Wars and Star Trek are in relation to
- 27:41the NFL. Now, yeah, there's a giant you know, during the
- 27:47season, right, because the NFL is like the biggest sports, right,
- 27:51and then a little bit during the Super Bowl it looks like but then or
- 27:55no, that's trades. Maybe I don't know, but look how dead it
- 28:00is. But now let's let's remove the NFL and just do Star Trek and
- 28:06Star Wars. Okay, same time period. Look how much more popular Star
- 28:11Wars is than Star Trek over a year, and look how flat Star Wars
- 28:18or Star Trek is. The the interest over a year is just not there.
- 28:23So something is going on, and it's it's sad, you know,
- 28:29so explained it for for those that are just listening. We've got a graph
- 28:32here that's that's showing Star Trek and Star Wars as far as uh uh,
- 28:37just how much on search results and search requests for Google. Okay, right,
- 28:44so this is just through Google. But Star Trek over a year or
- 28:48Star Wars over a year is far more popular than Star Trek, which that's
- 28:52kind of always been the thing, right, But but it is you know
- 29:00where Star Wars is at a sixty three, Star Trek is it at twenty
- 29:03two. You know that's not percentages of how many results, but it's just
- 29:08in relation to popularity against all other trends going, right, So basically like
- 29:14a ranking, right, like essentially Star Trek is the twenty second place or
- 29:22the higher the number, the better it is. So what you're saying is
- 29:26I need to get onto War's cast. That's right, that's right, gotcha,
- 29:33that's right, put their hosts in basements. Yeah, that's right.
- 29:37So this is a one year period. Yeah, this is just a year.
- 29:40So now, yeah, we can do a custom range, So we
- 29:45can do from six twenty two. Okay, So Daniel is is he's got
- 29:59a graph on the screen. I mean, that's that's showing the basically the
- 30:03popularity of Google searches for Star Trek and Star Wars, and he can customize
- 30:10the the range as far as time period goes what each one of them looks
- 30:15like over a two year period. And it's fairly obvious that Star Wars is
- 30:22a much more popular searched thing than Star Trek, and it has quite a
- 30:27few peaks. And yeah, it's so what are these So the blue Star
- 30:33Trek right at the beginning there? What is that peak? Is that Picard
- 30:38season three? It's gotta be okay, so can these idiots look at the
- 30:45same graph that you're looking at. I don't think that's possible, Dan,
- 30:48I you know, even they might not have access to this kind of information.
- 30:53But what I'm saying is, okay, so Star Trek is never going
- 30:59to have those numbers that Star Wars has, Right, I get I get
- 31:03it. Yeah, but look at your best numbers over the last two years.
- 31:07Yeah, and correlate that to what caused that and two more of that.
- 31:12Yeah. Yeah, huh uh what Yeah, it's it's it's an interesting
- 31:21thing. Yeah, They've got to have other metrics that they're looking at,
- 31:25because this is not good and this is like the closest thing that we get
- 31:29to ratings. Really it's just overall interests. But they also look at social
- 31:37media impressions, they look at sales and merchandise, which they're scaling back of
- 31:41merchandise for Star Tic, right. They they just stopped selling the toys because
- 31:45they weren't selling you know, it's it's roight again because they because they made
- 31:49poor decisions yeah doing that. Yeah. They they put out two or three
- 31:56of them at a time, and they did the same characters that everyone are
- 32:00already has in the same style that everyone already has. Yeah, instead of
- 32:05instead of putting out twelve characters and give us those three and nine that we
- 32:10don't have that everyone's been asking for for twenty five years. Yeah, yeah,
- 32:16come on, it was it was a botched launch. And then I
- 32:19don't know if you saw that report that just came out this week that said
- 32:22that officially, adults have taken over children for toy sails, so like we're
- 32:28the ones to cater to so because kids have iPads? Yes, yeah,
- 32:35yeah, all right, well that's all the news now that we're all depressed
- 32:39and angry. Oh I should say Happy Father's Day to you guys. Hey,
- 32:46thank you, Hey, yeah, thank you. Yeah. Well let's
- 32:52let's get to our main topic. Fun will now come out, all right,
- 33:04talk Yeah, Scott, Scott's got some moves there. Huh, a
- 33:07little bit bobbin. You know, the dance instructor on the ship taught him
- 33:13that move. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. Oh man, it's new
- 33:22how the cruise ship. It's just like your house. It's really great.
- 33:28It's a green screen. Oh is that what it is? Yeah, you
- 33:30took he took a photo of the area behind his desk and then you think
- 33:35straight in that picture. Yeah. Yeah, he wants he wants it to
- 33:37be authentic. Okay, ugh, got us all fold it's right. So
- 33:45yeah, so we watched uh Butterfly in the Sky. It is a documentary
- 33:51on reading Rainbow. It came out in twenty twenty two. It did have
- 33:54a brief limited theatrical run in New York and a few other selects cities.
- 34:00It was debuted at the Tredebeca Film Festival, but it is currently on Netflix
- 34:07and a few other VOD services. But yeah, it it just came out,
- 34:15you know, for for digital maybe a month ago. But it's the
- 34:20story of Reading Rainbow. The reason we're covering it is because LeVar Burton is
- 34:25such a big thing for Star Trek and he hosted Reading Rainbow, passion project
- 34:30of his. It seems like, but, uh, did you guys watch
- 34:32the documentary or okay, I'll watched yesterday, yep, Okay, what did
- 34:38you guys think of the documentary? What was your impressions? I was very
- 34:44taken by LeVar Burton's afro that's right, epic. Yeah, I liked it.
- 34:54I liked I like LeVar, I always liked I've always liked LeVar are
- 35:01He has a very calming voice, and I think that's and I think that's
- 35:06why children respond to him on Reading Rainbow. I think it's why I responded
- 35:13to him as the chief engineer of the USS Enterprise. You know, the
- 35:19ship's about to blow up and he's you know, he's got that calming Sure,
- 35:30needs to rejective, but it's fine. And he's a phenomenal actor.
- 35:34I mean, for seven years he acted from behind a blindfold and we're still
- 35:40and we could still pick up his emotions. Yeah, you know that that
- 35:46thing, right, Well, I think it's more of we couldn't see his
- 35:52eyes, right, how much how much emotion you project just with your eyes?
- 36:00Yeah, you're blinking patterns, where you're looking, how long you're looking,
- 36:05Yeah, you know how wide your eyes are open. You know,
- 36:12he couldn't do any of that. He was essentially acting from behind a mask.
- 36:16Yeah, and and he did phenomenal Yeah, he did. So that
- 36:22just goes to show his skill as a Yeah, thesbian I thought it was
- 36:28interesting in the documentary they point out that acting was not something he was like
- 36:32regularly seeking out to do. It just happened, you know. No,
- 36:37he was going to be a preacher. Yeah, that's right, that's right.
- 36:42He was going to seminar or I think, Yeah, and he got
- 36:45roots and it it took off from there. Yeah, it was interesting to
- 36:51see that, you know, the behind the scenes conversations that happened. Yeah,
- 36:59he he shot the pilot and then he showed up for the first season
- 37:02and he had a mustache. Yeah, and you know they told him to
- 37:06shave it off and he said, no, I don't want to. Yeah,
- 37:08And so that season he had a mustache, and then the next season
- 37:12he didn't, and the season after that he had an earring, and then
- 37:14he showed up with a beard, and you know, he just he looked
- 37:17different every every season. And initially they were like, you know, he's
- 37:22the host of the show. He's supposed to be a constant. These kids
- 37:24are not going to know. They're not going to think it's the it's the
- 37:28same guy. And it became a thing where the show was on for was
- 37:34it on for like sixteen years or something something like that, and you know
- 37:40we all watched LeVar Burton age yeah on the show, and and I think
- 37:47it was actually more genuine that way. You see the different clothing styles,
- 37:57the different fashions, the different hairstyle, the different facial hair style. Great
- 38:05colorful sweaters in this yes, yeah, yeah, some of them. Some
- 38:08of those sweaters, I'm like, did he take that off the TG set?
- 38:14Yeah? Yeah, that looks like that looks like something Jordy war to
- 38:19tend forward. Yeah, And we did get a little bit of Star Trek
- 38:22in the documentary. Yes, it was actually quite a bit. Yeah,
- 38:27talking about his time on Star Trek and how he was also on Reading Rainbow
- 38:30at the same time, and yeah, was in the dock. They thought
- 38:36they were going to lose him when he had the part on Star Trek and
- 38:39he stayed Yeah, yeah, because they showed that last goodbye and you can
- 38:47kind of hear it in his voice that he thinks it's over and yeah,
- 38:52yeah, right, yeah, it's it's pretty sad. But then they made
- 38:55it work and yeah, it was obviously a past project for him, and
- 39:00yeah, you know, like Dan said, he was he was very genuine
- 39:06in doing that and you could just tell that that he that LeVar Burton was
- 39:14in love with that program. Yeah, he really he felt a lot of
- 39:19ways about it. And you know, I grew up watching it. You
- 39:23know, the TVs was, you know, a thing in our house.
- 39:27Yeah, so yeah, I remember pretty much everyone they had on the documentary,
- 39:34all the kids that had grown up, I remember every single one of
- 39:36them. Oh yeah, so it was a big part of my life grown
- 39:38up. Yeah, yeah, that that was a big show for us.
- 39:44I know, my brother especially really liked it and would watch it so,
- 39:51but I had forgotten just how long it's been off the air, Like,
- 39:53yeah, it was, you know, we said it was on for what
- 39:57sixteen years? It feels like it was on for a lot longer. I
- 40:01feel like there was a there was some sort of GoFundMe for reading Rainbow not
- 40:07too long of them. Yeah, I think there was an attempted revival a
- 40:09little while back. I'm not I'm not sure how that how that worked out.
- 40:15I'm not too sure about that either. But yeah, the show has
- 40:21just been this legacy for a lot of people, and so I thought it
- 40:25was neat to see all the behind the scenes, Like yea, when they
- 40:29first were talking about, like we're going to make a show about books,
- 40:31and people were like, what would You're crazy? No? Yeah, yeah.
- 40:37The publisher that they visited who was like, how's this gonna help us
- 40:40sell books? Yeah? It's like, are you an idiot? Yeah,
- 40:45it's a it's a thirty minute commercial for books. How are you not?
- 40:51Yeah? How are you not picking this up? Yeah? Yeah, essentially,
- 40:57right, which which was great to see that, you know, towards
- 41:00the end of the run, publishers were just mailing them books. Yeah,
- 41:05you know, promotional books. They've rooms full of books just showing up like,
- 41:07hey, please, please please do a thirty minute commercial for our book.
- 41:12Yeah please. Yeah. I guess like Jumanji was covered in Reading Rainbow
- 41:16before it was a movie. Yeah, so that was neat. That was
- 41:22really cool and just how many people had inspired Uh yeah, like you were
- 41:25saying, Scott WHOOPI Goldberg was the documentary. She's also one of the producers,
- 41:30So I'd never realized that, you know, he had a relationship with
- 41:38mister Rogers. Yeah. I think like he was just on, like just
- 41:44visiting, like guest starring, you know, not Yeah, but yeah,
- 41:47I guess they were friends. So that's cool. So what's what's funny is
- 41:53I did not watch a lot of Reading Rainbow okay growing up, but I
- 42:00was very aware of it. My mother ran a daycare in our home,
- 42:05so it was on in the background quite a bit. And I specifically remember
- 42:10the episode where they visit Star Trek, which which is funny because I don't
- 42:21remember a lot about mister rogers neighborhood, but I specifically remember the episode where
- 42:28they visited the Incredible Hulk set. So it's just funny to me that,
- 42:34you know, the two that stick in my mind were were those two.
- 42:38I was nerdy at such an engage. Well, that was one of the
- 42:42things they brought up on the documentary, is like their their plan of attack
- 42:46too, was like to let kids experience all sorts of new things. Like
- 42:50they went to a volcano as it erupted, you know. Yeah, they're
- 42:57like, people are going away from it and we're like driving out the mountain,
- 42:59like yeah, let's get closer. Yeah. Yeah, So yeah,
- 43:05it was good. You know, it was funny. He he always spoke
- 43:08to the camera. He always spoke directly to the children. And when the
- 43:13producers was saying in talking to kids, they did feel like they were there,
- 43:17They were with they were with him. All I went to such and
- 43:21such with LeVar, Right, So except for that bat cave LeVar would I
- 43:30must have missed that part. I have to admit. It was late last
- 43:35night. Okay, for about for about ten minutes in the middle, Okay,
- 43:39there's a whole set about. Yeah, there's a whole sequence about how
- 43:44they wanted to go inside of a bat cave, like an act cave just
- 43:46full of bats, and they wouldn't like, no one wanted to go in
- 43:52because there's literally like the no, the the floor is covered bat and it's
- 44:00like knee high, right, yeah, and so you're trudging through that.
- 44:06But that's not even the worst of it is. There are like these little
- 44:09like worms that are flesh eating. So like if a if a bat falls
- 44:15into the guano, it's got to get back up right away or else the
- 44:17worms will literally eat it to death. And so like they're showing like skeletons
- 44:22of bats. So, yeah, flesh eating flesh eating ship worms. Yes,
- 44:28yeah, like no, no, So they got one camera guy to
- 44:35go in yeah, and uh and an audio guy and the audio guy like
- 44:38left midway through it. Yeah, not banks. Yeah, no, I'm
- 44:44good. Yeah, I thought it was a good documentary. If you guys
- 44:50grow up with Reading Rainbow, definitely would recommend. So, yeah, Reading
- 44:55Rainbow and mister Rogers Neighborhood. That's that's kind of how I grew up.
- 45:00So did your kids watch that show? Those shows? Uh? No,
- 45:05not so much, not so much. They know who they are. Yeah,
- 45:12how about yours? Dan, did they grow up with that stuff?
- 45:15No? No, my son watched Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, which is a continu
- 45:22it's a continuation of Mister Rogers neighborhood. It was the it's an animated show,
- 45:28but the the Daniel Tiger character that was a puppet on Mister Rogers.
- 45:35It's uh, you know, revolves around him and his family. Okay.
- 45:38Yeah. Also, our kids had something that we didn't like, the Internet
- 45:43and cable right right, My kids were watching the Disney Channel. Yeah they
- 45:47had options. Yeah, I had TBS, ABC, NBC and uh BBS.
- 45:58Yeah that was it. You know. True Fox came in there sometime.
- 46:00But yeah, yeah, okay, Well I guess that's that's pretty much
- 46:07it for for the main topic. So let's get to listener feedback. Listener
- 46:16feedback, listener feedback. Uh so, yeah, I guess it's still early,
- 46:27so we're not kidding a lot of people calling in, but uh we
- 46:30We did get a piece of listener feedback from Paul Chen who did mention that
- 46:36he remembered watching Reading Rainbow and he will remember watching it before watching Newton's Apple
- 46:42when he was a kid. I do not remember Newton's Apple. I do
- 46:45not remember Newton's Apple. Yeah, I vaguely remember it. There was there
- 46:52was a program on PBS that yeah, came before or after Reading Rainbow,
- 46:55so okay, and then Duval sent me an email he shot a video while
- 47:01we were at the convention, and so I'm gonna be posting that on the
- 47:07trek cast YouTube channel in a little bit so people can watch that. Was
- 47:12there a Star Trek convention, Yeah it was, yeah, yeah, you
- 47:15were on the cruise though, so yes, still am still am Captain Scott
- 47:21on his cruise. Yeah yeah, so yeah it was. It was a
- 47:27fun time out there, as we had said, so uh so. Yeah.
- 47:30So that's basically all the listener feedback. I didn't see any other ones.
- 47:36Did you guys get any any emails or anything? I did not,
- 47:40let's see. No, okay, I guess I should have checked before the
- 47:46show. That's okay, all right, that's cool, Like we get yeah,
- 47:52well, do you guys want to bring anything else up or no,
- 48:00we can just we could just end it awkwardly. It's okay, sounds good.
- 48:04So next week I'm working on an interview, so we should have that
- 48:10release next week. Cool. Yeah, okay, that'll be fun. So
- 48:15keep an eye on our social media's and I'll let you know who I'm interviewing.
- 48:19As again, what's our trek Cast schedule? For next week, I'll
- 48:22be out of town, but I've got I've got good internet at my airbnbook.
- 48:27So well, I was thinking I would just do that interview and release
- 48:30that on Sunday next week. Oh okay, I'm shooting the interview Saturday,
- 48:35and then I'll release it Sunday in place of Trek Cast, and then the
- 48:39week after that we'll figure it out. So well, week after that,
- 48:43I will be literally on a cruise. Yeah, we discussed this. Yes,
- 48:50yes, we made friends with a PR company and at the convention,
- 48:54so we're gonna try to have a little bit more interviews. So okay,
- 49:00you're good. Yeah, so I can just go f myself. Oh no,
- 49:06I'm also working on some crossover episodes with some other Star Trek podcasts.
- 49:12Oh cool. Yeah, so that should be fun, right yeah. But
- 49:16all right, Well, thanks everybody for listening, and we'll be back next
- 49:21week with that interview. Sounds good? A right? Bye bye. This
- 49:27is Captain Benjamin Cisco of Deep Space nine and Space God to the Bajorans.
