- 0:04Good morning. This is the Sacramento brief. Your
- 0:08weekday roundup of overnight headlines and what's
- 0:12ahead across the city. I'm Carole. It's Friday,
- 0:16August 7th, 2026. Let's get you caught up. We're
- 0:19beginning this morning with a little breaking
- 0:21news. Sacramento firefighters are currently mopping
- 0:23up a commercial fire in the 4900 block of Stockton
- 0:26Boulevard. Early reports indicate the fire involved
- 0:30the grocery store and heavy smoke conditions.
- 0:33At this hour, information is still developing
- 0:35and there's no confirmed details on injuries
- 0:37or the cause of the fire. So if your morning
- 0:40commute takes you through the Stockton Boulevard
- 0:42corridor, plan on avoiding the area and expect
- 0:45traffic delays while firefighters work to clean
- 0:48up and investigate. We'll continue to follow
- 0:50this story as more information becomes available.
- 0:54In City Watch, Sacramento County is rolling out
- 0:56a new strategy to make road repair dollars stretch
- 0:59a little further. The Sacramento County Department
- 1:02of Transportation has officially launched its
- 1:04new chip seal program. A preventative maintenance
- 1:09process designed to extend the life of existing
- 1:12pavement before road deterioration gets to a
- 1:15point of requiring expensive reconstruction.
- 1:19Rieland became the first community to receive
- 1:21the treatment. Here's how it works. Crews first
- 1:24apply a binding agent to strengthen the existing
- 1:28pavement. They immediately spread a layer of
- 1:31aggregate rock Compact it with specialized rubber
- 1:35tire rollers, sweep away the excess material,
- 1:38and then return several days later to apply what
- 1:41is called a fog seal. That final step waterproofs
- 1:46the surface and helps prevent moisture from reaching
- 1:48the roadway's base. The biggest advantage is
- 1:52efficiency. Traditional asphalt overlays typically
- 1:55allow repairs of less than one mile of roadway
- 1:59per day. With chip seal, crews can cover as much
- 2:03as three miles in the same amount of time while
- 2:05significantly reducing cost. Drivers should expect
- 2:09occasional lane restrictions, temporary no parking
- 2:12signs, loose gravel, and short delays whenever
- 2:15crews are working. County officials say the new
- 2:17program will allow them to improve the roadways
- 2:20with maintenance funding they already have. Listen
