- Canon Stogner: Not yet. Welcome back to another episode of the Saturday Slate football show. And man, do we have a lot to talk about and own up to about after a crazy weekend of football? It is just so good to finally have football back, and these first two weeks have been nothing short of incredible. which has been kind of not what we expected, just because the first two weekends were just gonna be tune up games for most teams. where you just kind of get comfortable and get your feet back underneath you after a long break off. Right before the conference game started. we had several upsets this past weekend. We had bounce back bounce back games from QBs who we hyped up after a poor start. some of our national champion picks have already suffered losses, and I personally will have to eat some of my words about some players or teams that I talked about previously. But I do feel like a lot of things are actually coming up all canon. And I could not be any more excited about that. we're going to recap the biggest games from this past weekend, review the A P poll that was released on Sunday, and hopefully answer all of your questions. So, Andrew, how are we doing? Andrew Wright: doing great man. Really, really wild weekend. Didn't really expect it. So yeah, a lot to dive into, a lot to talk about. Like you said, kinda gotta maybe own up to some stuff. We'll kinda see how generous I'm feeling. But yeah, definitely a lot of craziness. Very, very good Saturday night. Or all day Saturday really of football. Canon Stogner: Yeah. all right, so let's just go ahead and like we do every weekend or every episode, let's go ahead and recap South Carolina's game and start with them versus Towson from Saturday night. first obvious things they did improve to two and with a forty-five to nine win over Towson, but it was not pretty. scored forty-five points with the Norris sellers on the field, they only scored seventeen with two of those Touchdowns being via the Cari Swain punt return touchdowns, or two punt return touchdowns, and the other two were with Cutter Woods and the backups on the field. But a couple positive notes, the Gamecox did dominate the ground game. They rushed for four hundred and five yards while holding Towson to just twenty one rushing yards. they finished with five hundred and two yards. South Carolina did. They Game Cox had twenty two first downs and converted seven of fourteen on third down, so about fifty percent. While Towson just went three of sixteen on third down. mentioned just a little bit ago, Vicari Swain did have a massive night. And man, is he electric to watch return punts? He's kind of a dangerous punt returner, but if you're gonna I think you'd trade off that dangerous type returner for what he can do when the ball does get in his hands. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: So he did break South Carolina's university record with the most punt return touchdowns with five passing ace Sanders and someone else. I forget who it was. but South Carolina did turn the ball over. So let's talk about the obvious. they did not look great yesterday on offense. The running game started off a little slow. the penalties were still a problem. Matt Fuller has got to hold on to the ball. he had Two or three fumbles. I think he only lost one of them. but other one or two were you know, maybe against a better team, those get recovered. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: but they also had a couple things that they have to clean up right before the jumping into conference play where they face against Mississippi. you can talk about the weather, the miscommunication with receivers and Lenores, but I think the biggest thing for me is it's hard for a team to get excited for two games against FCS opponents, especially Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: when you know you have Mississippi State coming to town and you know it's gonna be a sellout crowd and you know it's just gonna be loud, it's gonna be exciting, it's gonna be the best environment a lot of these guys will have played in for a lot of the freshmen and incoming transfers. but they better buckle up 'cause Mississippi State is a heck of a team. Comario Taylor, who I was all over in the preseason, is a stud and it seems like he's kind of becoming nationally known for that. and it's going to be a tough game for South Carolina. But just recapping Talison, Andrew, what'd you think about that game? Do you think they were looking ahead or what? Andrew Wright: the really yeah, really weird one. Maybe a little bit of looking ahead in there. Yes, like if kinda if you're like me, so for us being Sacolina fans, I kinda go around just kinda click through box scores and just kinda look on the games I didn't watch. So if you're a team of a fan of another team and you went to this box score and you saw Lenore Sellers ten of twenty three, ninety one yards interception, you're like, Man, like that guy was awful. And he wasn't great, but he wasn't as bad as those stats look. I mean, I don't know if this is an official number, I've seen it multiple times, ten drops last night. Like that that just can't happen. It it really probably won't happen again at all. That's an astronomical number for drops in a game. I would hope that that's not the case again. If it is, they'll get their butt swapped by somebody if that happens again. So yeah, just really weird. Like you said, really good run game. Four hundred and five yards, almost ten yards of carry, which is I don't care who you're playing. That's really, really good against anybody. But yeah, definitely gotta clean up the drops and the fumbles and the penalties and the miscommunications. Cause like you said, Mississippi State is a really freaking good football team and Like ten drops, a fumble in the first drive of the game, an interception, that's not gonna cut it Saturday. So yeah, could have been maybe a little bit looking ahead, a little sloppy, but I definitely trust them to get it cleaned up because we haven't really seen that in the past. Not that sloppy, at least, against a bad team. Canon Stogner: Yeah, I mean I think as fans, if they do that last week versus Kent State, you kinda give them the benefit of the doubt. It's the first game. new offense, you know, you it's so hot out there. You're just trying to get a feel for, you know, where players need to be and all that. And a lot of mistakes pre snap that they have that really you can't really clean up until games actually start. but I think with it happening in game two, right before they play a very good Mississippi State team, it has fans a little worried Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: because of the problems. a lot of those are coachable and fixable, but the drops is to be determined. I mean, they're Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: not really necessarily big on the outside. They have Nick Harbor, but I've said this since his freshman or sophomore year. I really don't think Nick Harbor puts fear in teams like I think Sac Carolina fans think he does. Andrew Wright: Right. Yeah. Canon Stogner: Cause I mean, you really I mean this is his third year there or fourth year there. Which is it's fourth year? Andrew Wright: Sounds right, I think so. Canon Stogner: And you're you still have yet to see him like go up and just snag a ball out of the air against a smaller defender, kinda like the receiver that he's built like is supposed to do. he Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: could obviously run, but he's gotta catch the ball first. And you Andrew Wright: Right. Canon Stogner: saw last night he dropped a very catchable touchdown. I Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: mean, there's no excuse for that drop in the end zone wide Andrew Wright: Right. Canon Stogner: open. I mean, it was a three yard pass. I mean, it wasn't Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: like it had a lot of steam on it. It just went right through his arms. Look like it went through his whole body. Like that I mean, he's they gotta straighten it up. But I think one thing, I mean, yeah, we've said it. They have a huge test this weekend, but the defense has been outstanding. They've given up a couple Andrew Wright: Yeah, absolutely. Canon Stogner: of like explosive plays, but they have not like broken at all once they get down to the goal line. Their defense has completely taken away the run. Their defensive line depth is incredibly strong. and Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: very deep and that is even without Lenor or Dylan Stewart. So, I mean that is very positive to look at 'cause you gotta get those guys in and out on and off the field. 'Cause Andrew Wright: Uh-huh. Canon Stogner: you know, especially when teams run that no hurry or hurry up offense and no huddle and just wear down those big defensive linemen, you have to have a a lot of depth that can kinda just, you know, stand their ground and keep up with the fast paced offense. So We'll talk about the preview for that game more on Wednesday, but yeah, they definitely have to straighten up, but regardless, they are two and Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: I think a lot of other teams would trade to be that two and Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: so I mean you just get the wins when you can. So very positive about that. all right, so let's jump into the biggest game of the weekend, the most exciting game, Texas and Ohio State. So Texas came back from being down twenty three to three entering the fourth quarter. And they beat the number one team in the country in Ohio State twenty-four to twenty-three. Iowa State did look better for three quarters, three of the Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: four quarters. And Andrew, you were texting me about it while I was at the game. 'cause I didn't have service. They were in control and you and you were pretty much telling me that. You said Texas looked awful. I mean, I know Arch had a couple of throws that probably weren't his fault and should have been caught for touchdown or for a big gain. And even the interception they threw wasn't his fault. Andrew Wright: Right. Canon Stogner: But regardless of the fact if they lose they lose that game, we're still talking about Arch Manning. We're talking about Texas. so Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: that was a very big game. Jeremiah Smith was dominating, Julian Sane was dotting Texas defense up and it looked like Texas was gonna lose another game to the Buckeyes, but Texas scored twenty one answer po unanswered points and Arch Manning completely changed the narrative surrounding him, at least how the first three quarters were going. He did Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: struggled early, but he Texas just couldn't get the offense going at all. But when the game was on the line, he did make some big time throws, big time plays. He did finish with a hundred and ninety six passing yards and a touchdown. But during the comeback he went eleven for fifteen passing and used his legs also. Hollywood Smothers He deserves a ton of credit too. I know we talked about him leading on leading up to the year. He had two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including the game winning one yard touchdown with just twenty five seconds left. On the other side, Ohio State has to be extremely frustrated because Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: they had this game one go into a tough environment. All the stars are there, and you had it pretty much in the bag and you ended up choking it away. Julian Saiyan played well for most of the night. He threw for two hundred and seventy-eight yards. Jeremiah Smith had 164 catch receiving yards and a touchdown, but they just couldn't finish. They only scored three points in the second half, and then they missed a forty five yard field goal to go up nine points in what ended up being the drive right before Texas took the lead. So what were your thoughts on this game? Andrew Wright: yeah, like you said, that's gotta be a really extremely frustrated group in Columbus today. Texas, yeah, looked really, really sloppy early. The first the arch interception, I know we would have loved that that was a throw right into a chest of Texas. That wasn't his fault. Ball has to be caught. but he just he looked bad even after that, he looked bad like I was kinda telling you and texting you about. Just shaky, really happy feet, missed some wide open receivers, and then he turned it on. I don't know if he if he heard about us. If he just kind of locked in that part in his brain where we've been talking about him, I'll give him all the credit in the world. He turned it on. He played some incredible football down the stretch. He didn't really make any tough throws. Like there weren't any throws. I was like, man, wow. But he made the throws he needed to. And yeah, I mean, he brought them back. That's kind of what happened. Like I I hated to see it personally just because of the way we've talked about them and kind of viewed them and even with the the bet we made. But yeah, I mean, he he played some outstanding football. no way Ohio State can lose that game. I don't care where it's at. The fact that it was at Texas, you cannot blow a 20 point lead in the fourth quarter. Can't happen. like you said, Jeremiah Smith looked really good for two and a half quarters. And then really, after that last deep ball catch down the sideline, he kind of disappeared. Like I believe that catch in the third quarter got him to his 164 yards, and he never caught another pass. So kind of gonna have to figure out how that went wrong. Kind of something they can look to improve on. But yeah, major shout out to Texas, major shout out to Sark. They came back. I wouldn't even really say Ohio State lost that game. Texas just outplayed them. fifteen minutes. So yeah, major shout out to them. Great win for them. Canon Stogner: Yeah, was a massive win for Steve Sarkeesian and Texas. I mean, it kind of feels like that win was the game that got them over the hump Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: in the regular season at least, since he's been there, since Arch has been there. they beat the number one team in the country. They are now the new number one team. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: and now they're sitting at two and which means the bet that we made has a very bad chance of Andrew Wright: Yeah, we have Yeah. Yeah, we in trouble. Canon Stogner: yeah. So we're probably gonna be on here embarrassing ourselves. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: so we'll see. Great comeback win for them. Big Ten had a very poor showing this weekend. we'll talk Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: about the biggest upset this weekend, which I think was unexpected for everybody probably in Oklahoma State, upsetting Oregon. it was in Oklahoma. Oklahoma won 30 Oklahoma State won 3931 with a win over number six Oregon. And the stats really tell you how impressive this performance was. I mean, Oklahoma State finished with 554 yards compared to Oregon's 281 yards. Drew Messemecker, I love to talk about him. he threw for 317 and two touchdowns, and he ran for 109 yards with and a rushing touchdown. And honestly, He was my number one QB in the Big Twelve. And I did apologize for putting him up there last week after how he played against Tulsa. But I kind of said, you know, he can throw the ball and Oklahoma State's coach who came over from North Texas will throw the ball a lot. They had the most passing attempts last year in college football. But I did not know that he could run like that. And Andrew Wright: Mm. Canon Stogner: that boy could run. And he was running all over them. And so was the rest of the Oklahoma State team as they had two hundred and forty rushing yards on Oregon's defense. Caleb Hawkins had a hundred and ten rushing yards and a touchdown. And then the receiver Wyatt Young had 120 yards receiving and a touchdown. But let's talk about Oregon. I mean, very impressive win for Oklahoma State, but for Oregon, it's like where do you go from here? Are you that's not even the game that you had circled on your calendar? That's a game. You come off a very close win against Boise State last week at home. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: And it just felt like this was one of those games where they were going, you know, they heard the noise, they were gonna make a statement, and then they didn't. And Dan Lanning's a defensive guy, and his defense has looked awful the past two weeks. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: I mean, teams have been running all over them. but Dante Moore, he only passed for 191 yards and two touchdowns. they had a D'Arre Hill had 74 rushing yards, but Oklahoma State battled the first down stat or category. They went twenty five they got twenty-five first downs to Oregon's twelve, and they averaged six, almost seven yards a play. So when you look at those numbers, it wasn't just a fluke game from Oklahoma State. I mean, that just, you know, got a couple of plays. I mean, they completely won the game. They should have won. I mean, if we're sitting up here in Oregon, they did sneak out that game. You're probably saying, well, dang, that that was a game that Oklahoma State really missed out on because they should have won. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: So, I mean, they controlled the whole game. So, yes, I mean, the results were shocking. They went one and eleven last year and lost to Tulsa in week one, playing against the number six ranked Oregon team who who was one and and a lot of people have projected to win the national championship, including me. so yeah, it's very odd. What did you see from this game? Andrew Wright: yeah, just complete domination really. Like it never really felt like Oklahoma State was out of it, even when Oregon took those leads and kinda got themselves back ahead and you're like, All right, maybe this is the one that gets on my head the like all the way. Like they're the number six team in the country for a reason. This'll be the touchdown that gets on my head, but it never really felt like that. You always kinda felt like Oklahoma State was really gonna come back and go right down the field. you were you were all over Mestermaker. I mean, you said last week, like, hey, like I know he played bad, maybe shouldn't have ranked him so high. But and you like you said, you said but like he could very well come out and throw for three hundred yards and two or three touchdowns and then play Oregon close and that's actually what happened. So yeah, just for like you said, Oregon's in a weird spot now. Kind of like through two weeks, like we talked about last week with the Boise game, yeah, they outgame Boise by I think it was over two hundred yards. But they didn't really look like they physically outclass Boise, which is something that should happen. I know Boise's one of the better G six teams and like probably the best G six team, but your Oregon You should still kind of out athlete and kind of physically outclass those guys. And it didn't look like that last week and it definitely didn't look like that again this week against a team that is really a bunch of North Texas transfers. So yeah, very, very weird spot for them. I don't know kind of what they do. We Dan Lenning's a good motivator. I feel sure he'll use this some kind of really good way to get them fired up. But yeah, just really weird game and I don't think anybody had that on their radar is one of the bigger upsets of the season so far. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Oklahoma State, that was their first win against an FBS opponent in twenty one games. And it ended Oregon's twelve game road winning streak. So a lot of stakes were won or lost this past weekend. Oklahoma dropped I Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Canon Stogner: mean Oregon dropped down to number twenty one Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: in the rankings. So let's go ahead and talk about a game that a lot of people were shot. I know a lot of people picked Oklahoma to win this game. So Michigan upsets Oklahoma in Ann Arbor and came away with a win of seventeen to ten over number eleven Oklahoma. Obviously, you're coming off the game last week. We're the Hail Mary controversy and still don't know exactly what happened. I mean, obviously Michigan did get the win and they are two and but West Michigan games in the past and I thought Michigan is still Michigan. They have that. Very good defense Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: that you know they're gonna have. And I know we kind of we even picked Oklahoma to win this game, but it felt like it was a perfect matchup for Michigan. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: It really did, 'cause Oklahoma, I mean, they scored forty, fifty points in week one against an FCS team. But their offense looked really bad yesterday. John Matir looked really bad yesterday. And I kind of said it all off season. I mean, he's gotten too big. He can't he can't throw the ball. He's extremely Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: inaccurate. Seems like he's relying on his legs a little too much. And he's he's taking a lot of hits, which might be why he beefed up so much, because he wants to be a running quarterback that's gonna take hits and lower his shoulder. But I mean, if you do the all year, you're gonna end up getting hurt just like you did last year. So Andrew Wright: Right. Canon Stogner: I don't know exactly how he's being coached or exactly what the offensive strategy is or what their plan is offensively, but It was not working yesterday. And that's not to take anything away from Michigan's defense as they are really good. They have only given up one touchdown all year in Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: two games. And they're giving up eleven points a game, twelve last week, ten this week. But Michigan made the plays that matter the most. I mean, Mich Bryce Underwood went nine for seventeen passing for 111 yards, but I thought he made the throws that he needed to. And it seemed like he did come out with a little he was a little bit more calm yesterday than he was the first week. The first week he was coming Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Canon Stogner: out the tunnel and acting all excited and stuff and that's awesome and all, but you don't really want that with your quarterback just because you are the guy that gets the ball every play. And he he Andrew Wright: Right. Canon Stogner: had some plays yesterday where he almost got picked off or Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: fumbled the ball or made a bad read, but he played pretty well. He ran the ball eighteen times for eighty seven yards. Jordan Marshall Had the game winning touchdown on a one yard run after the interception set them up down to the one by Jair Hill. so Oklahoma was held to just three of thirteen on third down. He was sacked three times, including on the last possession. but I mean it was pretty good game. I I didn't say Michigan were was going to win, but I did say that maybe they were just looking ahead of western Michigan. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: and getting all excited for this game, but turned out Kyle Winningham is two and in his young season. And I still Michigan is I think a team that you still, you know, you still want to bring your best, especially offensively, because you know their defense is gonna bring down to the wire. Their defensive line and edge rushers are extremely talented and just big guys who will get to the quarterback. So what'd you think about this game? Was it more of Oklahoma being bad or Michigan just bouncing back? Andrew Wright: I think it was I would think more Michigan bouncing back in a a really big way. like you said, Bryce didn't throw the ball great, wasn't very accurate, but he made enough plays, and that's kind of really all you need. Don't matter how you get to a nose, just matters how you get there. Just yeah, he wasn't great with his arm, but good enough. really impressed how he ran the ball. I kind of knew throughout the game they were kind of talking about how that was more of a emphasis this week was getting their Q B run game involved. I think they said the offensive coordinator that came to Michigan. With Kyle Whitingham from Utah, his quarterbacks averaged over ten carries a game the last two seasons combined at his two schools. So that was definitely a focal point was getting Bryce on the ground. And Michigan's defense is good, man. Like you said, they only get it was what, four field goals to Western Michigan last week and just the one touchdown said. So yeah, I mean, that's a really good defense. I I almost kind of expected Oklahoma's defense to play the way Michigan's did, and it just didn't turn out that way. It was kind of, like you said, really set up for a team that was ranked to start the season that won but dropped out to kind of bounce back in a big way in front of their home crowd and they did. So shout out to them. They're two and and I think they kinda put themselves, especially with the way the Big Ten performed, kind of put themselves almost right back in the middle of the discussion for kind of Big Ten championship game with Parents isn't even playoff. Canon Stogner: Yeah, I mean, if Oklahoma, I mean, this was very eye opening for them. I mean, you're looking at maybe them possibly going six and six or seven and five now. Cause Andrew Wright: yeah. Mm-hmm. Easily. Canon Stogner: that was a nine conference game and I mean the defenses in the SEC are j going to be just as talented and good. So you have to be Andrew Wright: Right. Canon Stogner: extremely worried to be an Oklahoma fan 'cause you knew going into the year you were gonna have a good defense. And I think Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: you had a lot of faith in John Mateir in this offensive line and the running game. But couldn't get much going yesterday. It was just a second game. But they'll have to go at least seven and two in the SEC, if not eight and one. Andrew Wright: Yeah. News flash Oklahoma fans that ain't happen. Canon Stogner: So, I mean they have Texas coming to the Red River game couple weeks, so it's almost a must win for them now. But we'll see. So let's talk about another SEC game, the first SEC conference matchup of the year in Alabama and Kentucky. It was a tale of two completely different halves. Alabama ended up winning the game forty five to seventeen, finished with three hundred and fifty yards compared to Kentucky's 210. they ran for 155 yards. Keelan Russell did enough with he went 16 for 23 and threw for 188 yards and a touchdown, but he did have two interceptions. but the running game was very strong, very good. And then Kentucky and Will Stein. I kind of said it last week. He ran his mouth over the offseason, and he's got a big game coming up, week two. And It was very underwhelming. I mean, yeah, you know, he's got a young team and a transfer quarterback coming in who played at Notre Dame, or, you know, was on Notre Dame's football team. and Kenny Minche. And he was shaky yesterday. Kentucky was only one for thirteen on third down. Alabama was only five of fifteen, but obviously plenty enough. but Alabama looked pretty vulnerable in the first half. I mean, Kentucky jumped out to a seven lead after a pick six. And then Alabama answered with a touchdown of its own on defense. And Kentucky was even winning seventeen to thirteen going into halftime. so they went scoreless in the second half. What did you think about this game? Did Alabama look good to you? Are they gonna compete again? Andrew Wright: they look way obviously way, way better in the second half. I thought for Kentucky at least, they kind of s they kinda got the momentum they needed. Something we kinda talked about last week. They got the momentum they needed at the beginning with that pick six and like, man, I'm pretty sure Keely Russell fumbled the next drive. And we're like, Okay, like Kentucky's here to play. Like they're not messing around. Will Stein might have had this group together and they had all the momentum they needed. Like, all right, maybe people should tune in and they gave it right back. And kinda after that I never really felt confident in them again. like you said, Keelan Russell was okay. did enough, but the 32 on answer, kinda really hard to ignore that. Their defense stepped up in a big way in the second half, obviously holding Kentucky scoreless in that half. So yeah, they definitely looked they definitely looked good in the second half, but like you said, definitely vulnerable. Keelan Russell still got a lot of learning to do, which is expected. He's a young. But yeah, good performance for them in the second half, really something to kind of build on going into next week and kind of before they get SEC play. Canon Stogner: Yeah. I Kentucky's definitely a bottom half team of the SEC. I think we're Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: still waiting to see exactly what Keelan Russell can do. You saw the young mistakes that he a young player makes. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: but he'll learn from that and get better from that. Let's talk about Missouri and Kansas. Did you get to watch this game on Friday? Andrew Wright: not much. I caught a little bit. I kinda knew going in, I knew it was fourteen to fourteen at halftime, and then the next time I had a chance to look I saw Missouri was up by a couple scores. So no, I did not get a chance to watch much of that. Canon Stogner: Yeah. so I mean, the game started off exactly how you expect a rivalry game to start off. It was close, teams were going back and forth, a lot of turnovers and you know, just a lot of plays that you probably don't make in when you're p not playing in a big rivalry game, especially for only the second time in the last twelve years, and or some other questionable stuff that was posted online before the game. But Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: Missouri did the better team ended up winning with Missouri Thirty-eight and to Kansas twenty-one Missouri did have over five hundred yards without Ahmad Hardy. Austin Simmons was outstanding. He passed for twenty-five of thirty-five for almost three hundred yards and three touchdowns. And Jamal Roberts, their second string running back, he ran the ball twenty-eight times for a hundred and thirty yards and a touchdown. So they're loaded offensively still. Eli Drankowitz. is very good offensive coach. And it ended up they just wore Kansas down where they just couldn't do much towards the end of it. But pretty big game for Missouri. Do you think they are better than Oklahoma now? Andrew Wright: Man. I mean, I'd have to say yeah, right now, honestly. The way Austin Simmons has looked completely has outplayed John Mateer. And I know Oklahoma probably has the better defense, but I think I would take the high powered offense over the better defense. See, I would I would put Missouri right ahead of Oklahoma right now, I think. If we were doing like an SEC power rankings, I believe I'd have them probably right ahead. Canon Stogner: Okay. all right, well let's talk about BYU in Arizona. this was a game that completely changed after halftime with BYU Andrew Wright: Uh-huh. Canon Stogner: coming away with a win twenty eight to seventeen over Arizona. Oklahoma obviously st or BYU started out slow, but Bear Bachmeyer was the biggest story of the game. He threw he went sixteen for twenty six passing with two hundred and seventeen passing yards and three touchdowns while Austin rushed. also rushing for a touchdown, so we did account for all four touchdowns. and the running back had twenty carries for a hundred yards, so averaging five a pop. While Arizona Noah Fafita, he threw for twenty three of thirty one for two hundred and thirty yards with a touchdown and an interception. He was one of the guys that I talked about. I think he was in both of our rankings. Andrew Wright: Mm, I think so. Canon Stogner: So it was a bigger game than I think people had circled on their calendar just because of the other games going on at the time, but BYU did escape and it was one of those games where they needed to win just because of their Andrew Wright: Using. Canon Stogner: schedule and who they got the rest of the year. So BYU did look really good and second half they only they held Arizona to only eighty seven yards. So very big win for BYU to come out of there and win that game against BYU. Did you have any thoughts on that one? Andrew Wright: just a really good win for them. Kinda I guess you could say eliminated one of the teams that could potentially got in their path on the way to a Big Twelve Championship game. that's kind of one of the teams they needed to take care of to kinda make sure that team doesn't kinda get there. Really hard path for Arizona now. It's a really important for BYU to win that game at their home stadium and kinda eliminate Arizona from their path down the stretch. Bear bear bottme look really, really good. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Yeah. one game I wanted to talk about was Tennessee and Georgia Tech. And I think it's gonna end up being a long year for Brent Key and the Jackets. Andrew Wright: yeah. Canon Stogner: But it kinda just shows you how good Haynes King was at Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: Georgia Tech. I know there's a lot more a lot bigger problems in the quarterback position at Georgia Tech, and I kinda thought Mendoza would have played a little bit better, although he has played decent in the Two games they've had this year, they just ran into a buzzall against Tennessee and then lost a close game against Colorado. But it was a much more competitive game than what the final score would indicate. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: Tennessee did win by twenty one, but the score of forty five to twenty four with three hundred rushing yards. So completely controlled the game on the ground. Deshaun Bishop was the star of the game. He rushed for a hundred and fifty and two touchdowns on twenty carries. Faison Brandon kinda got the glimpse of what he would look like against a much better defense. He only completed ten of twenty one passes for a hundred and forty eight yards. But obviously they were feeding Deshaun Bishop. But he did show what his mobility and made some several important plays with his legs. For Georgia Tech, Mendoza threw for two hundred and twenty yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, while Justice Haynes rushed for eighty one yards and a touchdown on fourteen carries. Tennessee's defense did come up with the two interceptions with a forty-one yard pick six and they had four sacks on Mendoza and Georgia Tech's offensive line. Tennessee did have some Penalty problems though. They had fourteen penalties for a hundred and forty two yards. So a lot of things for them to clean up before they head into SEC play. But it was an interesting game. I mean, Georgia Tech blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to make the score ten to seven. So but Tennessee was just too much for them to keep up with. What did you have on this game? Andrew Wright: I think for me, the biggest thing if I'm a Tennessee fan, I think I'm a a tad bit concerned about the way Faison Brandon played, like you said, less than a fifty percent completion percentage against like not even close to the best team he'll play this year. So that would be a little bit alarming for Tennessee fans, would be kind of he struggled a little bit, would have liked to see him play a little bit better against what now looks like one of the kind of mid to bottom tier ACC teams. And then for Georgia Tech, like you said, gonna be a long year. They can't stop a nosebleed. Like we we kinda said that when they played Colorado, like they just really, really, really struggled to stop the run. And then that was the case again. Like you said, 300 rushing yards. So yeah, gonna be a long year for them. Even if they get that cleaned up, I don't know if Mendoza's the answer there. Obviously not his brother. And he hasn't like you said he hasn't played terrible, but he hasn't played exactly outstanding either. See unless they get some stuff fixed very fast and do a complete 180 in a very short amount of time, it's gonna be a long year there for them. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Let's talk about the Cyhawk rivalry matchup, which I think is one of the most underrated rivalries in football Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: with Iowa and Iowa State. it was a close game. It was pretty boring and snooze fest with Iowa coming away with a 16 to 13 win over Iowa State. It was an ugly, you know, just physical rivalry Andrew Wright: Okay. Canon Stogner: game that we expected. both teams were under 300 yards offensively with 285 for Iowa and 255 for Iowa State. so couldn't get nothing really going there. I wish I would have been able to watch more of this game, but unfortunately Family Friendly Death Valley does not have service. So very disappointed with that by the way, but we'll get into that another day. did you what'd you have on this game? Andrew Wright: yeah, it was it was Iowa football. Whether you take that to mean Iowa State, Iowa, whatever, it was Iowa football. It was dirty, it was run heavy, it was low scoring and it feels like and like rivalry games are, I mean, we'll get into the spread picks, but I picked Iowa State just to keep it close in this one, just to cover the spread, 'cause I thought fourteen was way too much, regardless of what Iowa State lost to the to Penn State in the portal with Matt Campbell and Rocco Beck. Just fourteen points for a rivalry game always feels Like a lot, especially when Iowa is involved in the game. I mean, they're lucky to get to fourteen points sometimes. And they barely got there this week. See, just just really sloppy rivalry, tough nosed game and big win for Iowa. Kinda I mentioned them in our in our Big Ten preview earlier this year, as kinda like a sneaky team to watch on a path to the college football playoff just with scheduling purposes. And this was kind of one of those games that wasn't really a toss-up, but kind of definitely could have been with where they did slip up and cost themselves a shot later in the season. So very important for them to get that win and kind of cruise into two and and kinda before they get themselves started in big ten play. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Clemson. Clemson, Christopher Vizina did get the start yesterday. I know they didn't announce it all week. And he did get the starting nod against Georgia Southern. I was actually at this game. I was honestly very surprised to see how many Georgia Southern fans were there. I did not really know the history of their team and but they had their school is just as big as Clemson. They have around thirty five hundred undergrad students, so Very big school, they have a lot of money. but Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: anyways, back to Clemson. Christopher Vizina, first drive of the game, kind of went down the field or or went three and out. Punt returner for Georgia Southern dropped the punt. Clemson recovered, and then they scored on the seventh play of their drive. 27 yard drive, seven plays. So it wasn't great, but he did throw a passing touchdown. and then the very next drive, he threw an interception. And next thing you know, Tate Reynolds was in the game and played the rest of the night. And honestly, just being there, you know, obviously can't hear what you know the sideline reporters and social media saying, but you just thought he got benched because you saw him last week Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: and you saw him the first two drives, just wasn't really going great. so Tate Reynolds played the rest of the night and Christopher Vizina is out with an elbow injury. He is now ruled out, ruled week to week. I thought it was kind of coincidental that he got hurt on the play through an interception. But I think Tate Reynolds is now the guy for them. I think he's gonna be the starter the rest of the season. But he has got to get better. He has not led a touchdown drive yet. Christopher Vizina, they've scored two touchdowns this year. Christopher Vizina has been the quarterback for both drives. but just watching last night, Tate Reynolds is more mobile than Vizina. But you can tell he's still very young and he's still trying to figure out how to relay the plays to the guys on the field, snapping it late in the count, and he's got to learn to get down or get out of bounds Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: or w whatever the case may be, 'cause he took a lot of hits. I mean, I'm I was sitting there last night and I'm like, gosh, it seems like he's been tackled twenty five times tonight and like hard hits. So He's gotta learn to protect himself. They definitely have a tough test this week with North Carolina coming to town. Their defense is very good. So I still I see Clemson getting the win just because I don't know if North Carolina's offense can move the ball on their defense, but it was a bounce back week for Clemson's defense, regardless of the opponent. I mean, they had six straight three and outs to start the game. Georgia Southern didn't get a first down the whole first half, except for a long pass on like second down. But other than that, defense played really well. SEC finished five and one this past weekend against the Power Four, with the only loss coming from Arkansas to Utah in a blowout. Big Ten finished two and six with Iowa and Michigan the only two teams getting a win in power four games. So much better we or better week for SEC than Big Ten, I think. lot of the top teams in the Big Ten with Ohio State and Oregon falling makes it look a lot better for the SEC, but Oklahoma beating Michigan still kind of stunts the argument about SEC being bet better than the Big Ten, but I'm still leaning towards the SEC. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: less what what were our spread picks this past weekend? How did we do? Andrew Wright: Well, so this week crap, I lost the dang paper. So I know I believe we had the same record as we did the first week. I believe I went three and two this week and you went two and three again. So that puts me at I believe what I sent to you and Will, I'm six and four this season with eight points now, and you are four and six with seven points, which feels almost crazy to me that I have two more wins already and I'm only a point ahead, which is very weird. Like I I knew I texted y'all in the group chat last night about the Ohio State game. Like Ohio State was one of my spread picks and I took not only to cover but to win. So I actually somehow got the point for them covering the one and a half on the spread, just not the extra point for the win. But yeah, I believe six and four and four and six is the record through through two weeks here. You gotta you gotta pick it up, man. This is bad Canon Stogner: Yeah. Andrew Wright: bad luck for the program to have somebody under five hundred. Come on. Canon Stogner: Yeah, it is. Will is going to be joining us Andrew Wright: I'm trying I'm trying I'm trying to think back through I'm trying to I know we both missed on Oklahoma. you missed LSU. You took them to cover a big spread. They were kinda sloppy and kinda cost themselves Canon Stogner: Yeah. Andrew Wright: a big win. And then I'm honestly not sure. You c you got all miss right. Canon Stogner: Yeah. I had BYU seven and a half versus Arizona. Andrew Wright: Yeah, that covered. Canon Stogner: SMU twenty four and a half versus UC Davis. Yeah. No, Andrew Wright: They covered. Maybe you didn't have almost the Canon Stogner: I had LSU beats Elitech thirty five by thirty five and a half. Andrew Wright: Yeah, and Memphis is what it was. Yep. And they got boat raced in the second half. Canon Stogner: Memphis covering eight and a half. Yeah. So, anyways, Will will be joining us Wednesday for to join in on our spread picks. last segment, let's react to the AP poll that was released on Sunday. Texas came in at number one after beating Ohio State. Georgia stayed at number two. They have completely just dominated the two teams. they have faced so far this year that look very comfortable. They look on time Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: and on script. Notre Dame is at number three. Indiana is at number four. Miami stays at number five. I thought they should have been in over Ohio State. I mean over Indiana just of how they looked. And they've really only played four quarters of football out of the eight, the starters at least. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Right. Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: Ohio State comes in at number six after dropping five spots after the loss to Texas. LSU's number seven, Ole Miss number eight, AM number nine, and Alabama number ten. So I think whenever we released our rankings, I had six teams in the top ten. Maybe seven. Maybe seven. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: But I had six teams in the top ten of from the SEC. And you and Will kind of, you know, gave me that. Little snarky look, Andrew Wright: Ha ha ha. Canon Stogner: SEC glazer, blah blah blah. Well now we're looking at one, two, three, four, five, six teams in the top ten from the SEC. So sounds like I had in a very good spot. What did you think about the AP Paul? Andrew Wright: couple of things that stood out to me from especially that top ten. First thing would be I think it's an absolute joke Canon Stogner: Yeah, right. Andrew Wright: that Ohio State dropped five spots. I think that's insanity. I yes, I understand they have to drop and the team that beat them should be ahead of them. I have no issues with that. But that team went on the road to a very hostile environment and dominated a football game for three quarters. They got outplayed for the most important quarter, but I just I thought that was a absolutely egregious and that's kinda a trend. that has started this year, like you're getting punished for losses and you're getting punished hard for losses, which we haven't seen in the past. Especially Canon Stogner: You get punished for wins. Andrew Wright: especially a top five game like that. Like last year, you think about Notre Dame when they opened up with Texas AM and Miami. And I believe they started the year around fourth or fifth. And they were and two and ranked like sixteenth in the country. And now you have an Ohio State team. So yeah, that that blew my mind. And then secondly, I I don't think Texas should have jumped to number one. I have Texas number three in my rankings, which I don't have them at four going into the week. I think Miami's the best team in the country. Like Canon Stogner: Mm-hmm. Andrew Wright: I kind of I wrote out my revamped top ten and Miami was it was between Miami and Georgia, but I think Miami's the number one team in the country. So the fact that they're at five is also absurd to me. Like I just I just don't know how people have watched that team dominate the way they have and think they're only the fifth best team in the country. So those are really my two big takeaways. From the top ten was the fact that Ohio State dropped five spots for a one point loss, and that Miami is still down there at number five when I think they're the best team in the country. Canon Stogner: Yeah, mean it definitely seems like a new approach with the AP poll. I mean, Michigan yeah, they won on a Hail Mary last week to western Michigan, but they were number sixteen and dropped out after a after a win. Andrew Wright: I thought I thought how far down Oklahoma dropped was insane. Canon Stogner: Mm. Andrew Wright: I I really did because the way I looked at that was they lost on the road in a one possession game to the team that these same voters ranked a top sixteen team in the country to start the season. And that have now moved dropped them eleven spots after a win that have now moved them back up close to ten spots. So for me that was I understand Oklahoma dropping, absolutely, but they dropped from what, eleven to twenty fourth? Is that what they dropped from 11 to 24th? Canon Stogner: Yeah. Andrew Wright: I thought that was an insane drop. Even Oregon, 15 spots? Like it's it's 15? Canon Stogner: yeah They shouldn't have been ranked. Andrew Wright: I don't know, man. 15? Canon Stogner: You can't lose you can't lose to a team by eight points to a team that lost to Tulsa the week before. Andrew Wright: I agree it's an inexcusable loss. There's I have no doubts about that. I'm just I guess I'm thinking more still like precedent set in the past. Like teams don't drop that many spots for losing games. And then the last thing and I'll stop about my AP Paul rant, I thought it was absolutely ludicrous South Carolina dropped the spot after winning as well. Canon Stogner: Yeah. I agree. Andrew Wright: I can't I I just I can't comprehend the like the way these rankings are going right now. I just I don't get that. Canon Stogner: Well, Washington's Washington's two and in two snooze fest games that they've barely squeaked by and they dropped. Yeah, Andrew Wright: And they've looked hedgeful. They've looked awful. Canon Stogner: and they dropped out too. I don't know. The only thing about AP Pole is they don't make the playoff ranking, so so yeah. Andrew Wright: That's right. It don't matter. Yep. At the end of the day it don't matter. Canon Stogner: but anyways that wraps up our previous or our recap of the week two Saturday slate. We will be back to you on Thursday previewing a massive weekend of college football. And it kind of feels like it's going to be like this every weekend now, especially with the SEC moving into nine games. So they're not playing that third non-conference game against one of those FCS teams. So every weekend is going to be loaded. This is a massive weekend in the fact that we are in conference play now, but also that a lot of teams are starting to shape out. And you're starting to see what teams are made of and what their bread and butter is. So very interesting game. I'm very excited to talk about the games this weekend with Will. And Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: yeah, so make sure you're liking, subscribing, commenting, and calling to the voicemail number if you have any questions. Make sure you follow our TikTok page and Twitter page as well. So thank you guys for tuning in and we'll see you.
