- 0:15Speaker 1: Happy Tuesday, everybody. Welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show on
- 0:19Speaker 1: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. Glad to be with you today.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Lots to talk about. Lots to talk about in the
- 0:28Speaker 1: world of sports. And we will get there after we
- 0:31Speaker 1: have a little soap opera discussion involving our favorite university
- 0:34Speaker 1: here on your home of the youths. Gordy Chiesa is
- 0:37Speaker 1: going to join us on the show today. Jerem Jordan
- 0:39Speaker 1: is going to join us for some red and blue.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Jeff Schwartz at one o'clock. Got a jam packed daily dump.
- 0:47Speaker 1: A lot of stories to get to. I'm going to
- 0:49Speaker 1: try to organize my thoughts and stay on track. You know,
- 0:53Speaker 1: I'm not usually very good at that, but. Yesterday, as
- 1:00Speaker 1: we were closing the show, a little crosstalk with Spence check.
- 1:03Speaker 1: It's I, I know it, you know, the, the, the
- 1:05Speaker 1: Pat McAfee show runs concurrent to ours. And he had
- 1:09Speaker 1: some things to say about the university of Utah's experience
- 1:12Speaker 1: at the university of Utah. I was like kind of
- 1:15Speaker 1: fired up because whenever, when Pat McAfee is talking right
- 1:20Speaker 1: for me, the way that I interpret Pat McAfee, is
- 1:25Speaker 1: similar to the way that probably WWE wrestling fans experience
- 1:31Speaker 1: Vince McMahon or Cody Rhodes or whatever. I look at
- 1:35Speaker 1: Pat McAfee and I'm like, that dude is an entertainer.
- 1:39Speaker 1: When that guy is saying something, it's probably, in my opinion,
- 1:44Speaker 1: 70 to 80% serious. He probably believes 70 to 80%
- 1:50Speaker 1: of the things that he says. He's a guy who,
- 1:53Speaker 1: you know, he's a bit of a class clown, and
- 1:56Speaker 1: I mean that in an affectionate way. I am not
- 2:00Speaker 1: anti-Pat McAfee. I was like, yeah, sweet, a little beef
- 2:04Speaker 1: between Pat McAfee and the University of Utah. By the way,
- 2:08Speaker 1: let's draw a very, very important distinction here. No matter
- 2:12Speaker 1: where you sit on the whole thing, the University of
- 2:16Speaker 1: Utah social media account, not the Utah Athletic Department, not
- 2:20Speaker 1: Utah Football Association, Not anybody in the sphere of engagement
- 2:24Speaker 1: that Pat McAfee was actually contacting as a member of
- 2:28Speaker 1: the college game day crew, right? Athletics and football bring
- 2:32Speaker 1: that to the university. The University of Utah's social media
- 2:37Speaker 1: account made probably a poor choice for Although, in my opinion,
- 2:43Speaker 1: a pretty innocuous poor choice in posting video of college
- 2:47Speaker 1: students who very clearly, in my opinion, were being good-natured
- 2:52Speaker 1: in maybe lightly ribbing this megastar sports media personality.
- 2:58Speaker 2: And he didn't like it. And he blew it out
- 3:01Speaker 2: of proportion.
- 3:02Speaker 1: And he went on his show and said that he
- 3:04Speaker 1: felt uncomfortable, and he suggested that he felt even a
- 3:07Speaker 1: little unsafe and made an unforgivable analogy, but I'm not
- 3:11Speaker 1: here to just rag on him. You all know what
- 3:13Speaker 1: I'm talking about. He references the Charlie Kirk situation down
- 3:17Speaker 1: at UVU as some sort of weird twisted justification of
- 3:20Speaker 1: why he felt like this needed to be taken so seriously.
- 3:23Speaker 1: That is not, in my opinion, that is not anywhere
- 3:28Speaker 1: near the mark.
- 3:29Speaker 2: That is like way off base, way off track.
- 3:34Speaker 1: But because the University of Utah has to be a
- 3:39Speaker 1: good partner to ESPN, and because Pat McAfee is probably
- 3:43Speaker 1: the second most powerful individual personality at ESPN right now,
- 3:47Speaker 1: I haven't paid close attention to whether or not he
- 3:50Speaker 1: or Stephen A. Smith is getting more money and is
- 3:53Speaker 1: being more coddled by ESPN right now. You have to
- 3:59Speaker 1: play nice with people that are in a position like that.
- 4:04Speaker 1: If he felt like, and he clearly did, if he
- 4:06Speaker 1: felt like the university was being disrespectful or the university
- 4:12Speaker 1: was undercutting him or undermining him, then he's entitled to
- 4:17Speaker 1: react to whoever he wants.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I think it's soft. You think it's soft.
- 4:21Speaker 1: I think it's important to note that the overall public
- 4:23Speaker 1: reaction to this, the overall public sentiment on this, is
- 4:28Speaker 1: probably like an 80-20 split in favor of Pat being
- 4:32Speaker 1: too soft, but the reality in which the university has
- 4:36Speaker 1: to operate and the athletic department, who.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Had nothing to do with this.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Nothing to do with any videos posted, nothing to do,
- 4:45Speaker 1: they weren't endorsing any statements from any students, who, by
- 4:49Speaker 1: the way, I think we got a total of four
- 4:52Speaker 1: college students that may or may not have been a
- 4:56Speaker 1: little bit loose and inebriated, or maybe just like up
- 4:59Speaker 1: too late or whatever it was like, not exactly official
- 5:03Speaker 1: spokespeople for university. However, act how you want to act.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Think how you want to think, react how you want
- 5:09Speaker 1: to react. If you're Pat McAfee, in this case, Utah
- 5:11Speaker 1: athletics has nothing to do with it. Utah athletics feels
- 5:15Speaker 1: like they need to, you know, make it clear that
- 5:19Speaker 1: they were not really, uh, There's nothing behind it, right?
- 5:23Speaker 1: The university is the mouthpiece in this case on both
- 5:27Speaker 1: the offending video and in the response. And sometime yesterday
- 5:32Speaker 1: afternoon evening, you get an official letterhead response and apology
- 5:37Speaker 1: to Pat McAfee and to ESPN.
- 5:40Speaker 2: You get a statement from ESPN.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Pat McAfee made his statement on his show. The whole
- 5:45Speaker 1: thing gets blown into a grand soap opera proportion for
- 5:49Speaker 1: unnecessary reasons. And I think a lot of the fan base, 877-353-0700,
- 5:58Speaker 1: I just want you to tell me on the text line,
- 6:00Speaker 1: do you think the university should have apologized to Pat McAfee,
- 6:05Speaker 1: should have taken this serious tone? The conversation should never
- 6:09Speaker 1: have taken this serious tone, but it did, right? So
- 6:12Speaker 1: let's live in the reality we're in. Whether I feel
- 6:17Speaker 1: like Pat was being way too soft.
- 6:19Speaker 2: In his reaction.
- 6:22Speaker 1: And whether I feel like ESPN was, you know, kowtowing
- 6:27Speaker 1: to him in interpreting it in such a serious manner,
- 6:33Speaker 1: I do feel that way. The right thing to do
- 6:37Speaker 1: for the University of Utah. From a business standpoint, from
- 6:43Speaker 1: a partnership standpoint, from a broadcast friendliness standpoint, from a please, please,
- 6:48Speaker 1: please give us good spots in the future, even though
- 6:51Speaker 1: you didn't for the Holy war, please bring game day
- 6:54Speaker 1: back to campus. The, the only acceptable response for the
- 6:58Speaker 1: university of Utah from a business standpoint is to try
- 7:05Speaker 1: to smooth this out and make it go away.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Right.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Sometimes I make really poor analogies on this show. I
- 7:13Speaker 1: think maybe this is not a poor analogy. I hope
- 7:15Speaker 1: it's not all of us. If you've ever been in
- 7:19Speaker 1: a relationship of any kind, a friendship, a business partnership,
- 7:23Speaker 1: a marriage, a boyfriend, girlfriend, a committed situation, whatever it is,
- 7:28Speaker 1: anyone who's been in that situation has been in a
- 7:31Speaker 1: spot where you get in an argument over something that
- 7:35Speaker 1: is probably pretty insignificant. You don't like the way they
- 7:38Speaker 1: empty the dishwasher or, The way that they park their car, whatever, right?
- 7:44Speaker 2: They do the laundry the wrong way.
- 7:46Speaker 1: All you folks out there who think that you don't
- 7:48Speaker 1: have to separate the whites and the colors. I got
- 7:50Speaker 1: a pink white shirt that suggests differently, right? But you
- 7:55Speaker 1: get in an argument over that. And it escalates and
- 7:59Speaker 1: it goes beyond what it ever needed to go, right?
- 8:02Speaker 1: And that happened with this, right? And I think it's
- 8:06Speaker 1: pretty obvious that one side of the argument escalated this
- 8:09Speaker 1: to a place that it did not need to be. Now,
- 8:13Speaker 1: it doesn't mean the other party, the university, was not
- 8:15Speaker 1: at fault. Or more specifically, whoever that social media account
- 8:20Speaker 1: manager was at fault. Which, by the way....
- 8:25Speaker 2: I there's no way for me to confirm this.
- 8:27Speaker 1: My hunch is that that person, whoever they are probably lost.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Their job, which is not something I root for.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Even when it's, you know, a boneheaded mistake, Pat McAfee
- 8:41Speaker 1: was mad and Pat McAfee, who's, you know, got hundreds
- 8:44Speaker 1: of millions of dollars, probably just got somebody making 65
- 8:48Speaker 1: K fired. But again, There's nobody who's completely faultless in
- 8:55Speaker 1: this situation. If the argument is between the university of
- 8:58Speaker 1: Utah and Pat McAfee, I think that one party is
- 9:01Speaker 1: very clearly responsible for escalating this well beyond where it
- 9:04Speaker 1: needed to go. And we have all been in that situation.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Sometimes we are the guilty party. Sometimes it is, you know,
- 9:15Speaker 1: the spouse, the significant other, the boss, the whoever, right?
- 9:21Speaker 1: And even though you can always make the choice, do
- 9:26Speaker 1: I want to be happy or do I want to
- 9:27Speaker 1: be right? University of Utah is choosing to be happy.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Because you could die on the hill and prove your
- 9:38Speaker 1: point that you are right.
- 9:40Speaker 2: You really could.
- 9:42Speaker 1: The public sentiment is telling you that if you wanted
- 9:45Speaker 1: to fight that battle, you are right, quote unquote right.
- 9:51Speaker 1: But being right in the public eye doesn't mean that
- 9:55Speaker 1: you are in good standing with ESPN. that you are
- 10:00Speaker 1: in good standing with one of ESPN's most important personalities
- 10:05Speaker 1: so even though you might think it's ridiculous how your
- 10:09Speaker 1: spouse or significant other loads the dishwasher and you might
- 10:12Speaker 1: have some objective evidence on the fact that they are
- 10:16Speaker 1: doing it wrong or you might think that your husband
- 10:19Speaker 1: is parks the car the wrong way every single time.
- 10:22Speaker 1: And there's a more efficient way to do something. And
- 10:25Speaker 1: you might be right, but instead of fighting that fight
- 10:29Speaker 1: and dying on that Hill and proving your point, you
- 10:32Speaker 1: decide I could be right. Or I could be happy
- 10:37Speaker 1: in this case, the university of Utah made a decision.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Let's just be happy. Okay. Let's not go out there
- 10:46Speaker 1: and let's not pick a fight with ESPN. Let's not
- 10:48Speaker 1: pick a fight with Pat McAfee. Let's not pick a
- 10:51Speaker 1: fight with the 20% rough estimate of the internet who
- 10:59Speaker 1: thinks that Pat McAfee is totally justified in everything that
- 11:02Speaker 1: he said in his rant on his show yesterday. Let's
- 11:06Speaker 1: just say, even though it would be easy enough in
- 11:11Speaker 1: my opinion, in the opinion of one radio host to
- 11:13Speaker 1: say like a half apology, like, uh, Hey Pat, uh,
- 11:20Speaker 1: maybe a little tone deaf by our social media account,
- 11:23Speaker 1: but you know, we love you. And you also know
- 11:28Speaker 1: that for college kids saying things you don't like is
- 11:31Speaker 1: not representative of an entire university. And also, uh, You're
- 11:37Speaker 1: in a position in life where you probably don't need
- 11:39Speaker 1: to get so up at arms over the opinions of
- 11:42Speaker 1: three or four college kids.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Now, look, I said on the show yesterday, I thought
- 11:46Speaker 2: it was a really bad look.
- 11:48Speaker 1: The gal who ended up kicking the charity kick or whatever,
- 11:52Speaker 1: it came off bad, right? It was a bad look. Okay,
- 11:58Speaker 1: so you live and you learn. You're a college kid.
- 12:00Speaker 1: That sucks.
- 12:02Speaker 2: People are talking about you.
- 12:03Speaker 1: They're not talking about you.
- 12:04Speaker 2: In a positive light.
- 12:05Speaker 1: You live and you learn.
- 12:06Speaker 4: You move on.
- 12:08Speaker 1: I don't know that we have the names of those
- 12:10Speaker 1: three or four dudes that are in the social media video.
- 12:14Speaker 1: One of them does say corny. And that's the only
- 12:17Speaker 1: thing that could even be remotely perceived as a true insult,
- 12:21Speaker 1: by the way. On his show, Pat mentioned, they hate
- 12:29Speaker 1: my guts. Somebody called me creepy. That never happened in
- 12:33Speaker 1: the video. So there's some false equivalents being drawn here.
- 12:38Speaker 2: And if you're Utah, you can fight that battle.
- 12:40Speaker 1: You can, you can play the video over and over
- 12:43Speaker 1: again and say, Pat, tell us what made you so upset.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Be specific.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Was it a 19 year old saying corny when he
- 12:51Speaker 1: talked about your bit where you take your shirt off
- 12:54Speaker 1: or where you were.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Going to say, Houston, we have a problem. There's nothing
- 12:57Speaker 3: wrong with that with a kid.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Now, if there is a misstep here by the university,
- 13:01Speaker 1: it's that you probably edit that out of the video, right?
- 13:05Speaker 2: And you probably, to kowtow to the personality.
- 13:08Speaker 1: If that's what you want to do, you probably only
- 13:10Speaker 1: have people saying really happy, nice, positive things about Pat McAfee.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I don't know whether whoever edited that video and released
- 13:16Speaker 1: that video has an ax to grind with Pat or
- 13:19Speaker 1: what they think Pat represents in American culture. I don't know,
- 13:22Speaker 1: and I don't care. All right? That person, I'm sure,
- 13:26Speaker 1: is facing some very serious consequences, up to and potentially
- 13:30Speaker 1: including termination, Pat McAfee spent three minutes on his show
- 13:36Speaker 1: talking about how he doesn't like Utah. And guess what
- 13:38Speaker 1: it does for Utah? Puts them in the center of
- 13:41Speaker 1: a conversation. And BYU fans get to love it. I
- 13:45Speaker 1: actually appreciate it. There's been a lot of BYU fans
- 13:48Speaker 1: who have expressed their sentiment like, that's kind of relaxed, Pat.
- 13:52Speaker 2: They didn't really hurt you. They didn't do anything wrong.
- 13:55Speaker 1: And Pat's wild swing into the Charlie Kirk mention, I think,
- 14:00Speaker 1: really put a lot of people off. And here's what happens, right?
- 14:05Speaker 1: Utah says sorry. Maybe we'll get an acceptance of that
- 14:10Speaker 1: apology on the Pat McAfee show today, or maybe there'll
- 14:13Speaker 1: be a statement for Pat McAfee. More likely, Pat McAfee
- 14:16Speaker 1: will not say a word about it.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Do you know why? Because there is no such thing.
- 14:21Speaker 1: As bad publicity if you're Pat McAfee. There's none. Pat
- 14:25Speaker 1: McAfee gets to live and love in the soap opera space.
- 14:32Speaker 1: And whether it's a bad look or a good look
- 14:34Speaker 1: for the University of Utah moving forward now, the university
- 14:38Speaker 1: made the adult choice to say, you know what?
- 14:44Speaker 2: We're sorry.
- 14:46Speaker 1: We're sorry for something that we should have technically controlled
- 14:49Speaker 1: and didn't control that you felt insulted by.
- 14:55Speaker 2: And that's on us. We love you. Please come back effectively.
- 15:00Speaker 1: And I got to believe that the decision to do
- 15:02Speaker 1: that is made 100%.
- 15:06Speaker 2: For business reasons.
- 15:10Speaker 1: So my thoughts on it and your thoughts on it,
- 15:13Speaker 1: this is why the university is more mature than me.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Because you know what I would do in this situation?
- 15:20Speaker 1: I would die on this hill personally. I would die
- 15:23Speaker 1: on the hill with Pat McAfee. I would. If I
- 15:28Speaker 1: were the president of the university, and there's very obvious
- 15:30Speaker 1: reasons why I'm not, I'd be like, come on, man, relax.
- 15:35Speaker 1: You're a 40-year-old multi-multi-multi-millionaire who gets to live a dream life.
- 15:40Speaker 1: You have earned that for yourself. You don't need to
- 15:44Speaker 1: be sensitive about something like this. Or probably more realistically,
- 15:50Speaker 1: I would, rather than even bothering to make the narrative
- 15:53Speaker 1: a direct one, I would just say, fine, right, we'll
- 15:55Speaker 1: be the heel. Pat McAfee literally does the WWE thing.
- 16:01Speaker 1: He can be the good guy. We will be the
- 16:03Speaker 1: heel here. Or since the public sentiment favors Utah for
- 16:06Speaker 1: the most part, Pat gets to be the heel here
- 16:09Speaker 1: and we get to be the face. Those are you
- 16:12Speaker 1: proud of me for using big time WWE wrestling terms?
- 16:15Speaker 1: That's what they call those. I mean, the face is
- 16:18Speaker 1: the good guy. The heels, the bad guy.
- 16:19Speaker 5: I know he'll face is a new one for me.
- 16:22Speaker 5: So that even went over my head. So you're good job.
- 16:25Speaker 5: Those are, those are real terms, right? Yeah.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Pat McAfee knows this world. He has made money and
- 16:30Speaker 1: fans in that world. If it's me, I probably do
- 16:34Speaker 1: it differently than the university is doing it. And I'm
- 16:38Speaker 1: okay with them issuing the apology because, like I said,
- 16:41Speaker 1: there's been times where I know I have had to
- 16:46Speaker 1: say to my wife, even though I'm right, okay, I'm sorry,
- 16:49Speaker 1: I'm correct, nobody in their right mind loads the dishwasher
- 16:52Speaker 1: that way. I've had to just say, I'm sorry, you're right,
- 16:56Speaker 1: thank you for doing the dishes. And then when she
- 17:02Speaker 1: walks away, you reloaded it?
- 17:04Speaker 6: Correct.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Is that what's going on? better to be happy than
- 17:07Speaker 1: to be right in a situation like that i know
- 17:09Speaker 1: that my lovely wife has seen me a million times
- 17:14Speaker 1: take umbrage with something innocuous and even though she's right
- 17:21Speaker 1: she has said okay i'm sorry let's not fight about
- 17:23Speaker 1: this let's just move on right because she would rather
- 17:27Speaker 1: be happy than right she's better doing that than i
- 17:29Speaker 1: am The university as a whole, the administration, the people
- 17:34Speaker 1: making these decisions are far more mature and reasonable about
- 17:38Speaker 1: this kind of thing than I am. The problem is
- 17:41Speaker 1: they're also far more mature and reasonable than the person
- 17:45Speaker 1: on the opposite side of the problem. And so whether
- 17:48Speaker 1: or not the response will be correct or whether or
- 17:53Speaker 1: not the response will be proportionate and in kind, I
- 17:58Speaker 1: have my doubts.
- 18:02Speaker 2: If there is any umbrage I would take with this,
- 18:05Speaker 2: it's that.
- 18:08Speaker 1: You're trying to smooth things over, and from a business standpoint,
- 18:11Speaker 1: that's absolutely the right thing to do. But what it
- 18:14Speaker 1: does not do, and make no mistake, it doesn't. It
- 18:20Speaker 1: does not earn the respect and the goodwill.
- 18:26Speaker 2: It doesn't.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Matt McAfee... I feel like was more wrong than Utah
- 18:36Speaker 1: was in this situation.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Pat McAfee wins. I don't like that.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Pat McAfee has, excuse me, no reason to respect the
- 18:48Speaker 1: university of Utah from like a, you know, an interpersonal
- 18:54Speaker 1: standpoint from a business standpoint, this is the respectable decision
- 18:57Speaker 1: and it's the one you have to make. But from
- 19:00Speaker 1: the Well, let's just agree that, you know, agree to disagree.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Let's move on. Let's shake hands and be cool with this.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Pat wins.
- 19:12Speaker 1: And that's obnoxious.
- 19:13Speaker 2: That's annoying. Because he's more wrong than Utah is in
- 19:15Speaker 2: this case.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Utah, the small correction that needs to be made is
- 19:19Speaker 1: you gather the social media team, you say, let's not
- 19:22Speaker 1: put this stuff out anymore. When we are welcoming guests
- 19:26Speaker 1: to the show, welcoming guests to the campus, let's make
- 19:29Speaker 1: sure that anything that we put out from our official
- 19:32Speaker 1: accounts is only welcoming and positive and whatever. I mean.
- 19:40Speaker 5: That's unfortunately what they're going to have to do from
- 19:45Speaker 5: now on for everybody that they welcome onto campus.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Campus, whether it's sports or business or whatever.
- 19:53Speaker 5: Whether that person has a sense of humor and can
- 19:57Speaker 5: take a light roasting, if you will, or not. Whether
- 20:03Speaker 5: that person's Charles Barkley or Pat McAfee, to give that
- 20:06Speaker 5: analogy right, they're going to have to say, If it
- 20:09Speaker 5: has a hint of anything that can be interpreted negatively,
- 20:13Speaker 5: we gotta edit it out.
- 20:16Speaker 7: And that.
- 20:17Speaker 5: Like, that sucks because this kind of content, this, hey,
- 20:20Speaker 5: give me an impersonation, it's not even really a roast.
- 20:23Speaker 1: It's just... It's just, hey, we're excited.
- 20:26Speaker 5: We have identified that we're excited about this person in
- 20:29Speaker 5: particular being on campus.
- 20:30Speaker 1: They didn't say, give me your Kirk Herbstreet impersonation. Maybe
- 20:34Speaker 1: they did, but they didn't publish that. They didn't say, hey,
- 20:37Speaker 1: Desmond Howard, do your best, Desmond Howard. He's the centerpiece.
- 20:40Speaker 5: Yeah, so it's, as Spence put it yesterday in Crosstalk,
- 20:44Speaker 5: and he talked about it later on his show as well,
- 20:48Speaker 5: it's flattering to have people impersonate you to mimic you imitation.
- 20:52Speaker 5: You know, the, you know, the old line imitation is
- 20:54Speaker 5: the sincerest form of flattery. Like that's what this was.
- 20:59Speaker 5: It's unfortunate that you can't have that kind of fun
- 21:02Speaker 5: anymore with guests that come to the university of Utah
- 21:05Speaker 5: because you have, well, this guest in particular, but I'm
- 21:08Speaker 5: sure they're going to be like, just don't like, we
- 21:11Speaker 5: gotta be way more careful with anybody, but particularly like,
- 21:16Speaker 5: Pat is, if we make another Inside the NBA comparison here,
- 21:20Speaker 5: Shaq has lightened up a lot more at the beginning.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Pat is Shaquille O'Neal at the beginning of when he
- 21:26Speaker 5: came on, where he would, he would dish out jokes
- 21:29Speaker 5: on Chuck's behalf or at Chuck's expense. And then Chuck would,
- 21:32Speaker 5: would shout back at him and he would get in
- 21:34Speaker 5: his feelings about it. And it would become a real
- 21:36Speaker 5: heated argument. And Chuck can just laugh at it. That's
- 21:39Speaker 5: the way it needs to be.
- 21:40Speaker 1: I hate to admit this on the air, but I mean, there, there,
- 21:43Speaker 1: I have a little Pat McAfee in me where like,
- 21:46Speaker 1: The I think I do, too. The relationship that I
- 21:49Speaker 1: have with like ribbing, gentle ribbing, sarcasm, humor, friendly humor.
- 21:55Speaker 7: Right.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Like the love language I have had with my friends
- 21:58Speaker 1: for my entire life has been like, if I tease
- 22:01Speaker 1: you a little bit, if I make fun of you,
- 22:03Speaker 1: I love you. If I never tease you, then I
- 22:08Speaker 1: probably just am indifferent towards you at all.
- 22:09Speaker 7: Right.
- 22:10Speaker 1: But it hurts a little bit when I'm in front
- 22:12Speaker 1: of you.
- 22:13Speaker 2: I tell you, I'm not as good at taking it
- 22:15Speaker 2: as I am at dishing it.
- 22:16Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 22:17Speaker 4: Right.
- 22:17Speaker 1: And sometimes I need to acknowledge that. And I don't,
- 22:20Speaker 1: I don't know if Pat McAfee acknowledges that in himself.
- 22:22Speaker 1: I kind of don't care. Now I saw on Twitter yesterday,
- 22:25Speaker 1: the big part of the conversation was why is he
- 22:30Speaker 1: so sensitive? Why is he being so sensitive? Why does
- 22:33Speaker 1: Pat McAfee care? And I have that same question, except
- 22:36Speaker 1: I think I know the answer. And our guy, Andy Phillips,
- 22:39Speaker 1: legendary Utah kicker is listening right now. Who appreciated you
- 22:42Speaker 1: thumping for kickers yesterday. Maybe Tom Hackett, maybe Tom Hackett
- 22:46Speaker 1: is listening somewhere. Maybe, you know, Mitch Wyschnowski is listening somewhere.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Maybe these guys can co-sign with me. I think, I
- 22:52Speaker 1: think part of the reason why Pat being Pat, uh,
- 22:59Speaker 1: and him having that particular personality trait, thin skinnedness is
- 23:04Speaker 1: kind of an obvious outcome here is because Pat McAfee
- 23:08Speaker 1: wildly successful as he is incredibly vaunted as a, well,
- 23:14Speaker 1: he was good as a player. He was, he was
- 23:16Speaker 1: respected for his position as a player. And he was also,
- 23:19Speaker 1: you know, successful, made it all the way to the
- 23:20Speaker 1: highest level. Everyone throws money at him, and he's been now...
- 23:26Speaker 1: He's cashed in on this show he's created like four
- 23:28Speaker 1: different times. He's wildly successful. Beyond the wildest dreams of
- 23:33Speaker 1: most people in our business of media. So why are
- 23:36Speaker 1: you still thin-skinned? I think 100% that comes from him
- 23:39Speaker 1: being a kicker. A punter's are people to kind of
- 23:44Speaker 1: chip on the shoulder. Because even if you make it
- 23:47Speaker 1: all the way to the NFL, even if you become like.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Vinatieri or you become Ray guy, or you become Harrison Butker,
- 23:59Speaker 1: or you become whoever the best at the position is.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Today, right? You're still a kicker. You're still a punter.
- 24:07Speaker 1: You're in this locker room where you can be a
- 24:10Speaker 1: future hall of famer, but everybody in the building and
- 24:13Speaker 1: everybody in the stands and everybody on television, everybody listened
- 24:17Speaker 1: to the radio show. views you as like an accessory
- 24:20Speaker 1: to rather than something that is like, and we love
- 24:24Speaker 1: our punters and kickers in Utah more than most people
- 24:26Speaker 1: because special teams saved our behinds in so many games, right?
- 24:31Speaker 1: You had all Americans, Louie Sakota, legend, Andy Phillips, legend,
- 24:36Speaker 1: Tom Hackett, Mish Wisnowski, all these guys, like you look
- 24:39Speaker 1: at them, Matt gay, Matt gay. And, and they have
- 24:43Speaker 1: as much respect from this fan base as you could
- 24:45Speaker 1: possibly have. but the maximum amount of respect that you
- 24:49Speaker 1: can feel as a punter and kicker, even when you
- 24:52Speaker 1: go from your career to success, that aside from Tom Brady,
- 24:58Speaker 1: nobody in the NFL has, you still have that thing, right?
- 25:04Speaker 1: That you were just the punter. You were just the kicker.
- 25:09Speaker 1: You were just the guy who sat on the end
- 25:11Speaker 1: of the bench and Until you put on your tiny
- 25:14Speaker 1: helmet with your weird face mask and you ran out.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Pat made a like Ryan Clark at one point was
- 25:21Speaker 1: making fun of Pat for not being a real football player,
- 25:23Speaker 1: basically on air. And it's the best representation you can
- 25:28Speaker 1: find of how sensitive he is. And he goes, okay,
- 25:32Speaker 1: you want to talk about who's a football player? How
- 25:35Speaker 1: many times have you scored a touchdown? The Ryan Clark's
- 25:37Speaker 1: like zero. How many times have you thrown a touchdown
- 25:39Speaker 1: pass in the NFL?
- 25:40Speaker 7: None.
- 25:40Speaker 1: How many times have you caught a pass for a
- 25:44Speaker 1: first down in the NFL? And he's like, none. Pat
- 25:47Speaker 1: names like 10 different things that are all part of
- 25:50Speaker 1: the game of football. It's like Taysom Hill's resume. What
- 25:53Speaker 1: has he done? He's done everything. He's like, have you
- 25:55Speaker 1: ever made a tackle? You ever made a kick? You
- 25:57Speaker 1: ever made a pass? You ever caught a pass? And
- 26:00Speaker 1: Ryan Clark.
- 26:02Speaker 2: All pro pro bowler.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Has to say no to most of them, right? And
- 26:06Speaker 1: Pat McAfee goes, I've done every single one of those
- 26:08Speaker 1: things in a college football or NFL game.
- 26:11Speaker 2: I'm more of a football player than you are.
- 26:12Speaker 1: And the room laughs, even though objectively those things are
- 26:16Speaker 1: factually true and he's participated and done more football things
- 26:21Speaker 1: than even a future hall of fame kind of guy potential, right?
- 26:28Speaker 1: People laugh. Because why? Because you're a punter. So there's
- 26:31Speaker 1: an insecurity that comes with that. Even though you are
- 26:34Speaker 1: more successful than everybody in your sphere, if you're the
- 26:40Speaker 1: guy who didn't play the position that gets respected, it's
- 26:43Speaker 1: a hard thing to grow out of that insecurity. And
- 26:46Speaker 1: I think that we all have to learn that, appreciate that,
- 26:48Speaker 1: remember that in some of these situations, but also feel
- 26:53Speaker 1: like it's appropriate to push back on it a little bit. Like,
- 26:56Speaker 1: are you punching down... When you're getting really upset about
- 27:02Speaker 1: college kids making innocuous comments about you, yeah, you are.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Is punching down something that you do consistently because it's
- 27:12Speaker 1: just part of your personality and maybe it's part of
- 27:14Speaker 1: what's made you successful? Well, yeah, maybe that too. At
- 27:18Speaker 1: the end of the day, I wanted this beef to escalate.
- 27:22Speaker 1: I wanted this to be something that the university leaned into.
- 27:27Speaker 1: I wanted it to be something like, yeah, Pat's a
- 27:29Speaker 1: BYU guy.
- 27:31Speaker 2: We're the Utes.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Cause it's, cause it's entertaining and it keeps, it keeps
- 27:35Speaker 1: the spotlight somewhat on Utah. Obviously keep it respectful, but
- 27:39Speaker 1: like lean into the conversation, get, get Pat McAfee to
- 27:45Speaker 1: mention your university on the show. from now until the
- 27:50Speaker 1: end of the college football season, 35 more times.
- 27:53Speaker 5: And maybe if you do it long enough, maybe he
- 27:55Speaker 5: smiles a little bit more about it. And he's like, yeah,
- 27:57Speaker 5: this has been a fun little back and forth. Maybe
- 27:59Speaker 5: he doesn't, but like, that's, that tends to happen too.
- 28:02Speaker 5: As someone who is a lot like you, OC a
- 28:05Speaker 5: lot better at addition stuff than taking stuff. Like it
- 28:10Speaker 5: wears you down a little bit. Once you're like, Oh, like, Hey,
- 28:12Speaker 5: they're just, they're obviously just joking.
- 28:14Speaker 1: It's fine.
- 28:15Speaker 2: And, and, I interpreted the video that way.
- 28:18Speaker 1: I don't pretend that I come at these things from
- 28:20Speaker 1: a completely neutral perspective because I assume positive intent from
- 28:24Speaker 1: the University of Utah.
- 28:26Speaker 2: We know people up there.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Again, this was the university itself, their social media account,
- 28:31Speaker 1: not athletic department, not Utah football. An important distinction needs
- 28:35Speaker 1: to be reminded and drawn there. But at the end
- 28:38Speaker 1: of the day, I wanted this to go differently than
- 28:40Speaker 1: it did. Instead, it became another one of these 2026
- 28:47Speaker 1: Apology situations. Hey, we're sorry that somebody got mildly offended
- 28:53Speaker 1: by this.
- 28:55Speaker 2: Hey, we're sorry that somebody.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Who's got a lot more influence and power than us
- 29:00Speaker 1: misinterpreted our intent. And we're not going to question whether
- 29:05Speaker 1: or not they should have interpreted it differently. We're not
- 29:07Speaker 1: going to question whether or not they're being too thin skinned.
- 29:10Speaker 1: where instead of being right, we are going to be happy.
- 29:15Speaker 1: And as much as I personally wanted this to become
- 29:19Speaker 1: a circus and a WWE entertainment show, the correct thing
- 29:24Speaker 1: for the university to do on a business standpoint and
- 29:28Speaker 1: on a, we have to maintain our partnership and relationship
- 29:31Speaker 1: with ESPN. And we have to hope that college game
- 29:33Speaker 1: day comes back next year or comes back in two
- 29:35Speaker 1: weeks or comes back at the end of the season.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Let's just, take the high road here.
- 29:42Speaker 1: Even if we could die on the Hill and we
- 29:44Speaker 1: could defend the students and we could defend the social
- 29:47Speaker 1: media manager and say, yes, it was a mistake, but
- 29:50Speaker 1: it's not something we're going to blow out of proportion.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Instead of doing that, let's, let's give this person what
- 29:57Speaker 1: they want. And you know what? from an institutional standpoint
- 30:02Speaker 1: that probably creates a better outcome. But I promise you this,
- 30:05Speaker 1: what it does not do, it does not make Pat
- 30:08Speaker 1: McAfee respect you. And I think that's equally as costly,
- 30:13Speaker 1: perhaps more costly.
- 30:14Speaker 2: For the university in the long run.
- 30:16Speaker 1: But again, that's just me. Those are my views. That
- 30:21Speaker 1: is not representative of the Utah athletic department. That is
- 30:24Speaker 1: not representative of Utah football. That's not representative of ESPN
- 30:27Speaker 1: 700 either. That is just me. Telling you, I would
- 30:31Speaker 1: have done the thing where you probably die on the
- 30:33Speaker 1: hill and instead of being happy, you're being right.
- 30:38Speaker 2: That's why I'm not the university president. I think that's
- 30:41Speaker 2: the only.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Reason, actually.
- 30:43Speaker 5: Yeah, that's the only reason. You have all the other credentials.
- 30:46Speaker 5: You have a business degree.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Correct. That's why I'm able to recognize... The strategy, but
- 30:56Speaker 1: not implement the strategy. It's just a piece of paper.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Just a piece of paper. Okay, this is from 6602.
- 31:05Speaker 1: I think the university crossed the line accusing him of
- 31:07Speaker 1: being creepy by taking his shirt off. They never said
- 31:09Speaker 1: he was creepy. Go watch the video. Just go watch
- 31:14Speaker 1: the video. This is an important thing in today's society.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Pat said that on his show. They called me creepy.
- 31:22Speaker 1: We watched the video. No one used that word. Now,
- 31:26Speaker 1: in the comments, people might have said, yes, it's creepy, yes,
- 31:29Speaker 1: it's cringe, yes, it's whatever. The video did not say that. Now,
- 31:33Speaker 1: should the video have been out there? Should the video
- 31:35Speaker 1: have existed from the university's official account? Probably not. But
- 31:41Speaker 1: what we're asking for now is perfection from every institution
- 31:45Speaker 1: and every, like, you're never supposed to do anything weird
- 31:48Speaker 1: or unadvisable. I mean, in this case, it got, this
- 31:53Speaker 1: is the hard lesson for everyone up there on the
- 31:56Speaker 1: Hill to learn. This is a hard lesson for me
- 31:57Speaker 1: as someone who's, you know, attached unofficially to learn that like,
- 32:03Speaker 1: if you do anything remotely close to wrong, when college
- 32:07Speaker 1: game day is involved, they're going to make you pay
- 32:10Speaker 1: for it. And you're going to have to bend the
- 32:12Speaker 1: knee and kiss the ring. And that is a hard
- 32:16Speaker 1: thing for some people like me. Now, for some people,
- 32:20Speaker 1: it's easy, and those people are probably a lot more
- 32:21Speaker 1: successful than I am. But for me, that's a difficult
- 32:25Speaker 1: thing to do. I am not naturally humble, and I
- 32:29Speaker 1: need to be, but I'm not. I don't like the
- 32:32Speaker 1: way this is played out, but I understand that the
- 32:36Speaker 1: university decided, I don't need to be right.
- 32:39Speaker 2: I do need to be happy.
- 32:41Speaker 1: And that means keeping ESPN and, by extension, weirdly enough,
- 32:44Speaker 1: Pat McAfee happy. Keep your reactions coming in, 877-353-0700. Gordy
- 32:52Speaker 1: Chiesa is going to join us next. We're rolling on
- 32:56Speaker 1: Utah's number one sports talk, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Invisible airwaves crackle with life. Peace out.
- 33:07Speaker 9: Let's get the latest on the Utah Jazz with former
- 33:10Speaker 9: Jazz assistant coach Gordy Chiesa. He's forgotten more about the
- 33:14Speaker 9: NBA than any of us will ever know.
- 33:15Speaker 1: It's like they're crazy.
- 33:17Speaker 4: Come for the hoops talk. Stay for his list of
- 33:19Speaker 4: the day.
- 33:19Speaker 10: Our list today.
- 33:21Speaker 9: Here's OC with basketball savant Gordy Chiesa on the Sean
- 33:25Speaker 9: O'Connell Show.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. We talk a
- 33:34Speaker 1: little basketball with Gordy Chiesa. Brought to you by our
- 33:38Speaker 1: friends at Aladdin Industries, your Utah VLUX dealer. If you're
- 33:40Speaker 1: looking for a skylight, they're the ones to call. Gordy,
- 33:43Speaker 1: welcome back to the show. How are you, sir?
- 33:47Speaker 11: Well, thank you.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Gordy, we were just talking about the way that this
- 33:51Speaker 1: whole Pat McAfee Utah situation got blown out of proportion,
- 33:55Speaker 1: and the university decides to issue an apology, and they've
- 33:58Speaker 1: decided that instead of being right, they're going to be happy.
- 34:01Speaker 1: We've all done this in a relationship at work, potentially,
- 34:05Speaker 1: where you say, you know what? Even if I want
- 34:08Speaker 1: to die on this hill, I recognize that I'm not
- 34:10Speaker 1: going to. It's not going to be a good outcome
- 34:12Speaker 1: for me. So I'm just going to apologize so we
- 34:15Speaker 1: can move on. I imagine you had a situation like
- 34:18Speaker 1: this or two with players, coaches in the NBA.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Can you give me an example of one maybe?
- 34:24Speaker 11: As a coach, you pick your battles to fight with
- 34:27Speaker 11: individual players, especially the star players. Because in the NBA,
- 34:30Speaker 11: the star players, you need them to perform in the
- 34:33Speaker 11: fourth quarter. So just generally speaking, Sean, every coach goes
- 34:38Speaker 11: through it, or management or organization. And so a good
- 34:42Speaker 11: question is, you have to make a decision. Is it
- 34:46Speaker 11: worth going all out against some sort of questionable situation,
- 34:52Speaker 11: or do you take a step back to go 10 forward?
- 34:54Speaker 11: And that's absolutely everybody does it in professional sports. And also, Sean,
- 34:58Speaker 11: in most businesses, that's successful.
- 35:01Speaker 1: All right, now let's get to this Utah Jazz team.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Off to a slow start so far this season. And,
- 35:07Speaker 1: you know, it started with some rebounding issues and there's
- 35:10Speaker 1: some turnover issues. And I'm not sure how you fix
- 35:15Speaker 1: these issues, but that's why we have you. You're the expert.
- 35:18Speaker 1: What's going on with this Utah Jazz team? One and
- 35:20Speaker 1: four so far. One and three so far, excuse me.
- 35:23Speaker 11: One and three so far. And, well, the biggest thing
- 35:26Speaker 11: right now is their defense is still– Absolutely, they have
- 35:31Speaker 11: to be better. They're allowing 121 points per game. It
- 35:34Speaker 11: puts them at 22nd in the NBA. So they've got
- 35:37Speaker 11: to improve that. The Jazz three-point shooting defense, they're allowing 27.
- 35:42Speaker 11: They're allowing 39.6% from three-point shooting versus their defense, which
- 35:49Speaker 11: makes them at 27. And ironically, Sean, tomorrow night's game
- 35:53Speaker 11: when the Jazz play the Spurs, the Spurs are the
- 35:55Speaker 11: worst team in the NBA guarding the three-point line. So
- 36:00Speaker 11: both teams are struggling to guard the three. And the
- 36:02Speaker 11: reason why, just simply speaking, is that you're getting beat
- 36:07Speaker 11: at the point of attack on ball as far as penetration.
- 36:11Speaker 11: And just generally speaking, that you're closing out to the
- 36:14Speaker 11: corner three or the arc three way too late. And
- 36:18Speaker 11: so there's lateness and there's also what? Lack of ball containment,
- 36:22Speaker 11: as always. That is the absolute root of what's going
- 36:26Speaker 11: on right now as far as the Jazz thought of
- 36:29Speaker 11: being a one and two. Now, add to this. Last
- 36:31Speaker 11: night's game, Sean, Jazz competed hard. Yes, they did. However,
- 36:36Speaker 11: is that... During the game, the evolution during the game
- 36:40Speaker 11: was that the Grizzlies bench, they really outplayed the Jazz
- 36:44Speaker 11: bench dramatically. So everybody in the Grizzlies basketball off the
- 36:49Speaker 11: bench scored four points or more. And the Jazz flip
- 36:52Speaker 11: side of that is that Kyle Filipowski, Steve Mihailuk, and
- 36:56Speaker 11: Joshua Koji, all those guys, they went 0 for 11 shooting.
- 37:01Speaker 11: And so the Jazz have no chance of winning if
- 37:03Speaker 11: those guys can't make a basket. And that was the
- 37:06Speaker 11: margin of difference right now. Even though, again, the question,
- 37:10Speaker 11: as always, for Jazz fans, there's no more moral victories.
- 37:13Speaker 11: You did play hard, and that's commendable. But it's a
- 37:16Speaker 11: home game. You're playing against the Grizzlies, who I know
- 37:20Speaker 11: that beat the Jazz– of six days earlier, but these
- 37:24Speaker 11: are games you have to win. Both teams are playing
- 37:26Speaker 11: a back-to-back. Jazz played on Sunday. The Grizzlies played on
- 37:29Speaker 11: Sunday versus at Sacramento. So it's a winnable game and
- 37:34Speaker 11: a fortunate Jazz lost.
- 37:36Speaker 1: One of the questions I had when the season started
- 37:39Speaker 1: is now that the appropriate measure is to move forward
- 37:42Speaker 1: with a full-strength team, not to over-inflate injuries, not to
- 37:46Speaker 1: give people extra time off. to, you know, help with
- 37:50Speaker 1: the tanking effort. You got to get guys on the
- 37:52Speaker 1: floor as often as you can. You got to get
- 37:54Speaker 1: guys on the floor for as long as you can.
- 37:56Speaker 1: You got to get the most out of Lowry marketing
- 37:58Speaker 1: and trade Jay and everyone else that you can. And
- 38:02Speaker 1: we're four games in Gordy and Lowry marketing exited in
- 38:05Speaker 1: the first quarter. Jaron Jackson jr. Exited in the second quarter.
- 38:09Speaker 1: I don't know the severity of those injuries. I think
- 38:10Speaker 1: we're still waiting more on details, but can this Utah
- 38:13Speaker 1: jazz team stay healthy now that they want to stay healthy?
- 38:18Speaker 11: Yes, they can. Now, with that said, though, is that
- 38:21Speaker 11: with Larry Marketing, it was a right wrist injury. So
- 38:24Speaker 11: it's absolutely important because that's a shooting wrist. And with
- 38:28Speaker 11: Jaron Jackson, it was a right knee injury. And so
- 38:31Speaker 11: we'll see what the MRI says today. The Jets will
- 38:34Speaker 11: know more of what's going on. All right, so now
- 38:36Speaker 11: the question is always this, Sean. Just like in the NFL, attrition.
- 38:40Speaker 11: Who's going to step into those roles and play well?
- 38:43Speaker 11: Last night was Mo Bamba. Mo Bamba, that guy came
- 38:46Speaker 11: in the game. And the energy on the boards and
- 38:49Speaker 11: the lane, he created so much havoc. And he scored
- 38:53Speaker 11: 14 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks. And that was good.
- 38:56Speaker 11: Josh Green hounded and pounded Ty Jerome, who scored 45
- 39:01Speaker 11: points against the Jazz six days ago. Now, last night,
- 39:04Speaker 11: Jerome goes 4-15 because of menace on defense of Josh Green.
- 39:09Speaker 11: So the question, as always, is who's going to step
- 39:12Speaker 11: in those games and play? I think Ace Bailey is
- 39:16Speaker 11: playing well. For a guy that's 20 years old, Ace
- 39:19Speaker 11: Bailey last night had some good moments. He had 17 points,
- 39:25Speaker 11: 10 rebounds, and three blocks, and they're playing almost, Sean,
- 39:29Speaker 11: as like a stretch, almost like a stretch three, a
- 39:33Speaker 11: stretch four. And it's been commendable with him what he's done.
- 39:38Speaker 11: Darren Peterson. I'm asking this question, Sean, every minute of
- 39:40Speaker 11: the day when I'm on the street is that people
- 39:42Speaker 11: are asking me about Darren Peterson. Let's not forget, he's
- 39:45Speaker 11: only 19 years old. He's struggling right now shooting only
- 39:48Speaker 11: 36% from the field and 33% from three. But you
- 39:54Speaker 11: get the feeling what? They're all makeable shots, so he
- 39:57Speaker 11: will be fine. As always, in the NBA, just like
- 40:00Speaker 11: in the NFL, you've got to be able to score points.
- 40:04Speaker 11: In the NBA, you also have to be able to what?
- 40:07Speaker 6: Defend.
- 40:08Speaker 11: And it all starts on the rim and also the
- 40:11Speaker 11: three-point line. And that's when the Jets right now are struggling.
- 40:17Speaker 1: We're still very, very early. Who else is catching your
- 40:19Speaker 1: attention around the association, Gordy?
- 40:23Speaker 11: The Rockets, Sean. The Rockets, they got Freddie Van Fleet back.
- 40:27Speaker 11: And so he's having seven assists a game, and it
- 40:31Speaker 11: gives them this steady influence. The Rockets, again, they are
- 40:35Speaker 11: a good team. They got knocked out in the playoffs
- 40:38Speaker 11: by the Lakers, and it set them back on their heels.
- 40:42Speaker 11: But they have a good talent level. Obviously, we have
- 40:45Speaker 11: Kevin Durant, and you have Amon Thompson, one of the
- 40:47Speaker 11: best two-way players in the NBA. And Alperon Chagoon. And
- 40:52Speaker 11: what makes the Rockets so interesting to me is that
- 40:55Speaker 11: they're second in the NBA as far as shooting overall. Again,
- 40:58Speaker 11: you get a point guard that's pass happy, that's steady.
- 41:03Speaker 11: So the Rockets right now are second in the NBA shooting, 50.9
- 41:06Speaker 11: from the field. Ironically, the Lakers are number one. And
- 41:10Speaker 11: we saw the Lakers here on Sunday, what the Lakers
- 41:12Speaker 11: do when they move that ball. So that is really
- 41:15Speaker 11: good for the NBA. So now the Thunder, with some
- 41:19Speaker 11: of their main guys being injured, the Thunder are still 4-0.
- 41:23Speaker 11: I find this fascinating. So the Rockets, Thunder, and the Grizzlies,
- 41:27Speaker 11: so the Grizzlies, the upcoming team, the Thunder are an
- 41:31Speaker 11: elite team. The Rockets want to be an elite team.
- 41:33Speaker 11: They're 4-0. So I find that very interesting. At the
- 41:38Speaker 11: Eastern Conference right now, Nick Obakis, who would have thought
- 41:41Speaker 11: that the Knicks and the Nets have the same record 0-3?
- 41:46Speaker 11: And so with the Knicks right now, Jalen Brunson has
- 41:49Speaker 11: said himself he's blaming the Nick Obakis slow start at
- 41:56Speaker 11: 0-3 on him. Jalen Brunson, who we all like and
- 42:00Speaker 11: enjoy watching him play, he's only shooting from the field 39.1
- 42:03Speaker 11: and 26.7 from threes. So that's what I've been watching
- 42:09Speaker 11: right now. So the Spurs are somewhat struggling and the
- 42:13Speaker 11: Knicks are struggling. And by the way, it seems to me,
- 42:16Speaker 11: we all remember that was the NBA finals last year.
- 42:20Speaker 11: So there's some sort of really mental fatigue, even though
- 42:25Speaker 11: you say it's not. It is when there's two teams
- 42:27Speaker 11: come out of right now with a slow start.
- 42:32Speaker 1: You make a great point, Gordy. The Nuggets have one win.
- 42:35Speaker 1: The Warriors have one win. The Spurs have one win.
- 42:39Speaker 1: So it's not time to panic about the fact that
- 42:41Speaker 1: the Utah Jazz only have one win. But when do
- 42:44Speaker 1: teams really start to pay attention as you're getting a
- 42:46Speaker 1: season rolling and you're trying to make sure that you're
- 42:51Speaker 1: off to the right start and that you're not digging
- 42:53Speaker 1: a hole for yourself? How many games into a season,
- 42:56Speaker 1: if things aren't going well, do you have to start
- 43:00Speaker 1: raising an eyebrow internally?
- 43:02Speaker 11: 20 games. That's the benchmark, 20 games. So sometime in
- 43:08Speaker 11: December or so. So that's when you really see your
- 43:13Speaker 11: team as far as how you are. And that's when
- 43:17Speaker 11: you have to reassess really internally without any emotion about, hey,
- 43:22Speaker 11: we thought that so-and-so was going to play better and
- 43:25Speaker 11: he is not. Or, hey, it's really surprising that... Our
- 43:30Speaker 11: concern was, say, a three-point shooting, and our team is
- 43:33Speaker 11: shooting for the blanks or rebounding. And that's what you
- 43:36Speaker 11: have to do. You have to internally analyze your team
- 43:40Speaker 11: to make adjustments and get ready to possibly make an
- 43:45Speaker 11: early trade or the trading deadline in February. What are
- 43:49Speaker 11: you going to do? So you want to be totally honest.
- 43:52Speaker 11: You don't want to overreact. or underreact, but you want
- 43:56Speaker 11: to see what your record is. Because, again, as always,
- 43:59Speaker 11: your record is who you are at that moment.
- 44:04Speaker 1: What's the list today, Gordy?
- 44:06Speaker 11: All right, Sean. This past Sunday, Luka Doncic, they call
- 44:13Speaker 11: it Luka Magic, he had the 52-point performance against the Jazz.
- 44:17Speaker 11: And he was absolutely spectacular, him and his sidekick, Austin Reeves.
- 44:21Speaker 11: And when I was watching him play during that game,
- 44:24Speaker 11: he really had it rolling. So my list today is
- 44:27Speaker 11: the NBA career leaders in the most 50-point games or
- 44:31Speaker 11: more career-wise. So look at that. He's the first one
- 44:35Speaker 11: this year of getting 50 points in the NBA game.
- 44:38Speaker 11: Here's some of the attributes of a dominant point producer. One,
- 44:42Speaker 11: you need more skills. Two, range shooting touch. Three, interior presence,
- 44:48Speaker 11: either driving or posting. Four, being a foul generator, three-throw
- 44:53Speaker 11: line resonant. Five, passing and screening teammates as far as
- 44:59Speaker 11: on the floor. So you get 50 points in a game,
- 45:03Speaker 11: your passing and screening teammates have helped you. And the
- 45:06Speaker 11: last point about this, the sixth thing you need is what?
- 45:08Speaker 11: You have to have an alpha dog personality, supreme confidence
- 45:12Speaker 11: as a baller. So just think about what Luka did
- 45:15Speaker 11: on Sunday, and just the list right now, it'd be
- 45:19Speaker 11: a quick list as far as these people have that personality.
- 45:23Speaker 11: All right, 13th of all time with nine games of
- 45:29Speaker 11: 50 points or more are Kevin Durant and Giannis. Tied
- 45:33Speaker 11: for 11th all time is Luka Doncic with 10 and
- 45:38Speaker 11: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. 10th all-time at most 50-point games career-wise, Allen
- 45:45Speaker 11: Iverson at 11. Tied for 8th all-time. LeBron James and
- 45:50Speaker 11: Rick Barry with 14 50-point masterpiece. Tied for 6th all-time.
- 45:59Speaker 11: Steph Curry and Dame Lillard, two knockdown shooters. They did
- 46:03Speaker 11: it 15 times. Tied for fifth all-time at the most
- 46:06Speaker 11: ever 50-point career games. Elgin Baylor with 17. Tied number
- 46:12Speaker 11: three all-time. Kobe Bryant and James Harden They did it
- 46:16Speaker 11: 25 times. The second most ever 50-point game performances is
- 46:22Speaker 11: Michael Jordan with 31. And the number one player of
- 46:26Speaker 11: all time, the most ever 50-point games, Sean, it probably
- 46:30Speaker 11: will never be broken. It's Will Chamberlain. He did it
- 46:35Speaker 11: 118 times of 50 points or more games. Jazz basketball,
- 46:39Speaker 11: the leader is Adrian Dantley. He did it six times.
- 46:42Speaker 11: Karl Malone and Pete Maveridge did it four times. So, Sean,
- 46:46Speaker 11: Will Chamberlain scored 50 points or more in an NBA
- 46:49Speaker 11: game 118 times.
- 46:51Speaker 1: It's an insane, insane number.
- 46:54Speaker 11: So, Luka's got 10, and it's commendable. Will's got 118 times.
- 47:02Speaker 8: Wow.
- 47:03Speaker 1: I wish we could have seen him.
- 47:05Speaker 11: Oh, I saw him, and he did it with step-back jumpers,
- 47:10Speaker 11: unbelievable dunks, running the floor, and also he had this
- 47:14Speaker 11: finger roll where he looked to the baseline, come back
- 47:18Speaker 11: middle with the ball, and finger roll to the basket
- 47:21Speaker 11: against all these shot blockers. Remember, he jumped so high
- 47:24Speaker 11: on that finger roll, it's hard to block his shot.
- 47:27Speaker 1: Gordy, you're the man.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Appreciate your time.
- 47:30Speaker 6: Thanks, Sean. Peace out.
- 47:31Speaker 7: Stay well.
- 47:34Speaker 1: If AI and cloning and robotics at some point don't
- 47:38Speaker 1: give us like a crude facsimile reincarnation of Wilt Chamberlain,
- 47:45Speaker 1: I'm going to be disappointed with all of our technological advances.
- 47:49Speaker 1: When you hear some of the numbers that that guy
- 47:51Speaker 1: was able to put up, it just makes you wish
- 47:53Speaker 1: you could see him in a modern NBA. All right,
- 47:57Speaker 1: we'll close out our number one. We still have red
- 47:59Speaker 1: and blue coming. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN
- 48:02Speaker 1: 700 and 92.1 FM. You're listening to.
- 48:04Speaker 12: The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of
- 48:17Speaker 12: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 48:33Speaker 1: The college football coaching carousel has begun its spin this
- 48:38Speaker 1: last weekend.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Dave Aranda, former Utah state Aggie coach.
- 48:43Speaker 1: He was a defensive coordinator with Gary Anderson up there
- 48:46Speaker 1: for several years. He has been fired as the head
- 48:49Speaker 1: coach of Baylor and the list of interesting candidates for
- 48:53Speaker 1: Baylor is fascinating for the in-state connections as well. First
- 48:59Speaker 1: of all, I mean, the number one name on people's
- 49:02Speaker 1: minds is Lincoln Riley from USC. There's a lot of
- 49:06Speaker 1: conversation back and forth about whether or not Baylor would
- 49:09Speaker 1: be willing to pay the necessary price tag for a
- 49:11Speaker 1: Lincoln Riley buyout and whether or not Lincoln Riley would
- 49:15Speaker 1: rather coach at Baylor or just go into TV and
- 49:19Speaker 1: not coach. Apparently Baylor is looking for someone that has
- 49:22Speaker 1: Texas ties and Texas roots. And it feels like that's
- 49:25Speaker 1: maybe more important with the Texas schools than it is
- 49:28Speaker 1: with anyone else in college football these days. I mean,
- 49:30Speaker 1: the recruiting landscape is very nationalized, um, I don't know
- 49:35Speaker 1: if that's even the right way to say that, but
- 49:37Speaker 1: everyone can recruit everywhere now at a certain level. Texas, though,
- 49:41Speaker 1: is still kind of a unique animal from the high
- 49:45Speaker 1: school football culture standpoint, and if you're somebody who knows it,
- 49:48Speaker 1: lived it, maybe came up in it, you are going
- 49:51Speaker 1: to have some advantages. If you're connected to these guys
- 49:54Speaker 1: and you're, in his case, a lot of the guys
- 49:57Speaker 1: that he grew up with are high school coaches, small
- 50:01Speaker 1: college coaches, coordinators at the other universities, things like that.
- 50:05Speaker 1: So a return to Oklahoma, Texas, South Central United States
- 50:10Speaker 1: would make sense for Lincoln Riley potentially.
- 50:14Speaker 2: Baylor, hire him, please. I would love for Utah to
- 50:18Speaker 2: only have to.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Deal with the Baylor that forever will be an offensive
- 50:22Speaker 1: team only. That would be fantastic. The other angle with this,
- 50:27Speaker 1: and not that we.
- 50:29Speaker 5: Root for this to happen, but it would probably be
- 50:33Speaker 5: helpful to University of Utah if you do root for
- 50:36Speaker 5: the Utes. We've said if and when Lincoln Riley gets
- 50:41Speaker 5: fired or leaves USC for any other reason, one of
- 50:43Speaker 5: the first people they're probably calling is Kalani Satake.
- 50:46Speaker 1: 100%.
- 50:47Speaker 2: That is 100% the case.
- 50:49Speaker 1: There's absolutely no question that that would happen if BYU
- 50:54Speaker 1: continues to be as successful as I think they're going
- 50:57Speaker 1: to be.
- 50:57Speaker 2: The rest of the year.
- 50:58Speaker 1: I think they got one more loss on their schedule.
- 51:01Speaker 1: You know what I'm going to say? That is, but
- 51:03Speaker 1: you know, Kalani and if you're going to get them
- 51:06Speaker 1: away from BYU, well, there's, you know, the, I think,
- 51:11Speaker 1: I think there's resolution now. I think that the waters
- 51:14Speaker 1: have calmed around he and Brian Santiago, not seeing eye
- 51:17Speaker 1: to eye. I think BYU has done its best to
- 51:19Speaker 1: smooth that over. But also if you're USC, do you
- 51:25Speaker 1: have the money to be like, we're going to fire
- 51:28Speaker 1: you Lincoln Riley. And if Baylor's not going to hire
- 51:31Speaker 1: you and there's no offset language in your contract, can
- 51:34Speaker 1: we afford it? That, that is, I can't believe we
- 51:36Speaker 1: have to ask that question for like USC, but USC
- 51:40Speaker 1: is spending $ 50 million or it's 40 something, 40 something
- 51:43Speaker 1: million dollars on their roster. They're going to pay an
- 51:46Speaker 1: extra 55 to 70 to get rid of Lincoln Riley.
- 51:49Speaker 1: It's hard.
- 51:50Speaker 5: Will Ferrell and Snoop can't just come together and pay
- 51:54Speaker 5: the buyout. Like, Speaker 2.
- 51:58Speaker 7: Come on.
- 51:58Speaker 2: Well, if we'll fare, we'll have to do elf too.
- 52:01Speaker 1: If that's the case, he's already turned down like $ 30
- 52:04Speaker 1: million to do it. Anchorman three, Jason Eck from New Mexico.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Interesting name to potentially replace him. Speaker 0 5.
- 52:13Speaker 5: Done a good job, done a good job replacing Bronco
- 52:16Speaker 5: down there.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Then a phenomenal job.
- 52:17Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 52:18Speaker 1: Former Utah offensive coordinator, Dan Mullen. He's currently at UNLV,
- 52:23Speaker 1: his name being mentioned.
- 52:25Speaker 5: Uh, have you also seen that RG three's name has
- 52:29Speaker 5: been mentioned?
- 52:31Speaker 1: I love RG three. I think there's a lot of
- 52:33Speaker 1: people who don't, I'm a big RG three fan.
- 52:36Speaker 2: Uh, RG three.
- 52:40Speaker 1: Here's what we've learned. Okay. If you want to put
- 52:43Speaker 1: a guy who's never coached before into the college football ranks,
- 52:48Speaker 1: absolutely do that as a position coach. No problem. As
- 52:53Speaker 1: a maybe a head coach for a very small school.
- 52:57Speaker 1: There's a lot of like, uh, FCS, FCS, HBC. Like
- 53:02Speaker 1: there's a lot of those HBCUs. They've done that.
- 53:05Speaker 5: A lot of them have, I mean, and Deon Sanders.
- 53:08Speaker 5: that long ago, for example, he had a lot of success,
- 53:11Speaker 5: Jackson state. I mean, Michael Vick did it right.
- 53:14Speaker 1: If, if Michael Vick can do it, then so can
- 53:17Speaker 1: they didn't Deshaun Jackson do it.
- 53:19Speaker 2: Like there's a bunch of guys.
- 53:20Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 53:20Speaker 5: I think Deshaun Jackson is Eddie George is still coaching
- 53:24Speaker 5: Tennessee state.
- 53:25Speaker 1: So yes, lower level.
- 53:27Speaker 5: And this you make a good point. This isn't the
- 53:29Speaker 5: NBA where J.J. Redick can go from podcasting and broadcasting
- 53:34Speaker 5: to being the head coach of the Lakers and have
- 53:36Speaker 5: and do pretty good. I don't think he's been fantastic,
- 53:39Speaker 5: but do well enough because he's able to hire a
- 53:42Speaker 5: bunch of former head coaches as his assistants. I suppose
- 53:45Speaker 5: you could do something like that in college football, but
- 53:48Speaker 5: it doesn't it's not quite as plug and play as
- 53:50Speaker 5: we've seen in the NBA.
- 53:54Speaker 2: Those are the names with local connections.
- 53:56Speaker 1: Dan Mullen.
- 53:57Speaker 2: I love Dan Mullen.
- 53:57Speaker 1: So I, Dan Mullen in power football again, be sweet.
- 54:01Speaker 1: Would be interesting having to deal with him. I think
- 54:04Speaker 1: he's a good coach. He's a good recruiter. There's some
- 54:07Speaker 1: resources at Baylor. There's some money. We don't ever talk
- 54:10Speaker 1: about it because of the Texas tech thing, by the way,
- 54:12Speaker 1: the trouble in paradise around Texas tech right now, we'll
- 54:15Speaker 1: get to it in the daily dump.
- 54:17Speaker 2: It is just chef's kiss. You think that the.
- 54:18Speaker 1: Pat McAfee soap opera is interesting, but If we were
- 54:22Speaker 1: in Texas, Pat wouldn't even be on the radar. We'd
- 54:25Speaker 1: be talking all about Cody Campbell feuding with a local
- 54:28Speaker 1: radio station there. How about that? We'll get to that
- 54:31Speaker 1: in the Daily Dump. But now it's time to take
- 54:34Speaker 1: a break. Red and Blue is next. Jerem Jordan joins
- 54:36Speaker 1: us to talk about BYU's first loss of the season
- 54:39Speaker 1: and much more, including a 10 a.m. kickoff for the
- 54:42Speaker 1: Holy War. Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 54:51Speaker 6: My father taught me many things.
- 54:53Speaker 4: You know what they say.
- 54:54Speaker 1: He taught me, keep your friends close, but your enemies close.
- 54:59Speaker 4: Time to check in on the team down south. They
- 55:02Speaker 4: have done absolutely nothing wrong, but they're blue. This is
- 55:05Speaker 4: the Red and Blue on.
- 55:06Speaker 9: The Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number one sports talk,
- 55:10Speaker 9: ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 55:19Speaker 1: Head down to 985 West Summit Ridge Parkway in Santa Quinn.
- 55:23Speaker 1: Tell you heard about it on the Sean O'Connell Show
- 55:25Speaker 1: when you go to Murdoch Ford Santa Quinn. Have them
- 55:28Speaker 1: pull out a Ford F-150 Tremor option. That is the
- 55:32Speaker 1: official truck of the Major League Baseball postseason. World Series
- 55:37Speaker 1: is to be listened to right here on ESPN 792
- 55:40Speaker 1: on FM. So, you know, head down there. Rip one
- 55:45Speaker 1: of those things around in the mud, the dirt. see
- 55:48Speaker 1: how it performs on the freeway, make a purchase, just
- 55:52Speaker 1: make sure you mention our name. Jerem Jordan, BYU Insider,
- 55:55Speaker 1: friend of the program, BYU Sports Nation, and anywhere you
- 55:58Speaker 1: can find Cougars content has his beautiful face.
- 56:03Speaker 2: Jerem, how are you?
- 56:05Speaker 7: I'm doing great. And, you know, Cooper Pratt of the
- 56:07Speaker 7: brewers who famously, you know, celebrated with the fantasy, he's,
- 56:11Speaker 7: he's a member of the church, Jesus Christ, Lazarus. And so, yeah,
- 56:14Speaker 7: he's there's a, there's a local rooting interest. As you
- 56:17Speaker 7: listen to the games on ESPN 700, let's go.
- 56:20Speaker 1: All right. So how are we feeling? How's the BYU
- 56:23Speaker 1: fan base feeling right now after a surprise loss to UCF?
- 56:29Speaker 7: I missed the game.
- 56:30Speaker 9: What happened?
- 56:31Speaker 1: Are you curious?
- 56:32Speaker 7: No.
- 56:33Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 56:33Speaker 7: That was what's funny. It was, I had to leave
- 56:35Speaker 7: the watch party at my own house with people to
- 56:37Speaker 7: go call the BYU Arizona state women's volleyball match on
- 56:41Speaker 7: ESPN plus. And I was like watching it on the
- 56:42Speaker 7: road and I'm seeing tweets before my stream is live
- 56:45Speaker 7: and I'm like, Oh, I blocked the field goal. Oh,
- 56:47Speaker 7: it's roughing. Oh, it's wait, roughing the gut. What's going on?
- 56:51Speaker 7: Fourth and goal stand is crazy, right? That was just
- 56:54Speaker 7: a crazy finish. That game certainly disappointed with the letdown
- 56:59Speaker 7: following a top 10 win. And oddly enough, the last
- 57:02Speaker 7: three top 10, when, when you always had the next
- 57:05Speaker 7: FBS game they had, they they've lost. Now two of
- 57:08Speaker 7: the last three were against ranked teams on the road
- 57:11Speaker 7: with Washington and Oregon. But yeah, it's just, it's just
- 57:13Speaker 7: a bummer. Cause we only had, you know, perhaps it's
- 57:15Speaker 7: greatest win ever. fans that irrational were saying, Oh, I'll
- 57:23Speaker 7: be always going to drop out of the top 10.
- 57:24Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, no.
- 57:26Speaker 7: There's, there's respect for what BYU is and who they beaten.
- 57:29Speaker 7: So yeah, they stay at eight, they dropped six, the
- 57:32Speaker 7: most of anybody in the poll, you know? And now
- 57:35Speaker 7: they have, they played their Mulligan card already of the
- 57:38Speaker 7: great win. So now you've got to compete and you've
- 57:40Speaker 7: got to win out if you want to make the
- 57:41Speaker 7: big 12 title game. And if you don't, And you
- 57:44Speaker 7: happen to have a loss on there. Like you're not
- 57:46Speaker 7: going to make the big 12 title game and you're
- 57:48Speaker 7: going to hope to be an at-large and certainly the
- 57:50Speaker 7: Notre Dame game is a good win, but every game
- 57:52Speaker 7: is huge. You know, when, when you're vying for the
- 57:54Speaker 7: playoff and there's a lot of parody in college football,
- 57:57Speaker 7: that's good for BYU. That's good for Utah as well.
- 57:59Speaker 7: So it's going to be interesting. And then of course
- 58:02Speaker 7: the big games coming up next week, which by the way,
- 58:04Speaker 7: I'm getting ready for BYU, Utah women's volleyball Friday night.
- 58:07Speaker 7: I'm calling that game. It should be, it should be
- 58:10Speaker 7: a fun one. You know, Utah and BYU and volleyball
- 58:13Speaker 7: is competitive as well.
- 58:13Speaker 1: Speaker 2, yeah, that'll be a good one. Are you
- 58:17Speaker 1: surprised how it happened against UCF? Was there something in the,
- 58:21Speaker 1: cause I mean, look, Yes, even a team as good
- 58:25Speaker 1: as BYU is vulnerable when you're on the road, coming
- 58:27Speaker 1: off an emotional win like Notre Dame, but were you
- 58:31Speaker 1: surprised at how it actually happened with Keon Jenkins passing
- 58:35Speaker 1: for almost 300 yards and three touchdowns?
- 58:38Speaker 7: Add it to the list of, you know, backups that
- 58:40Speaker 7: have somehow beaten BYU. It just, it's a weird list. Like,
- 58:44Speaker 7: I feel like it may have started with Brett Ratliff
- 58:47Speaker 7: back in the day. That was like a weird one.
- 58:51Speaker 1: We remember that.
- 58:52Speaker 7: Yeah, I, yeah, I'm sure you do. Do I make
- 58:56Speaker 7: you one Jenkins look really good. And don't get me wrong.
- 58:59Speaker 7: Dude's a good player. Like they, they had flirted with
- 59:03Speaker 7: ranked teams. And so it wasn't like BYU was you know,
- 59:07Speaker 7: and Spencer and I had said on, on our show, like, Hey,
- 59:10Speaker 7: UCF let down game, like just so you know, there's
- 59:13Speaker 7: that element. And they, they led Houston 17, nothing. They
- 59:16Speaker 7: were in the game with Oklahoma state late at 21,
- 59:19Speaker 7: 21 and the third early fourth, like they flirted, but
- 59:21Speaker 7: not finished against good teams. And now they, they finished,
- 59:25Speaker 7: you know, against BYU.
- 59:26Speaker 1: And got the win.
- 59:27Speaker 7: And so, yeah, certainly disappointing. I just thought the BYU
- 59:30Speaker 7: defense would handle this better. They did not tackle. Well,
- 59:33Speaker 7: there were a couple of plays there where BYU did
- 59:35Speaker 7: not wrap up. There's a third and 17 where they
- 59:37Speaker 7: throw a screen. That's a white flag that they're going
- 59:40Speaker 7: to pump. They throw a spring. You just get them
- 59:42Speaker 7: for seven yards, they kick and midfield. And then you
- 59:45Speaker 7: go from there. No, they, they get way down the field.
- 59:47Speaker 7: They don't wrap up. They score again. If you only
- 59:49Speaker 7: had a chance for the half to, you know, score
- 59:52Speaker 7: and then get the ball back and score again and
- 59:54Speaker 7: kind of, you know, you don't want to give a
- 59:57Speaker 7: team hope like that. You don't want to make it weird.
- 59:58Speaker 7: And it got weird. And even in overtime, you know,
- 1:00:01Speaker 7: I'll be able to get to stop. And then there's
- 1:00:02Speaker 7: a roughing the kicker, a lot of debate around that call,
- 1:00:05Speaker 7: but I don't point around like one play. And I
- 1:00:08Speaker 7: respect what Notre Dame did was they didn't complain about
- 1:00:10Speaker 7: like the last play holding or one second. They said, well,
- 1:00:12Speaker 7: we should have, you know, we kind of got beat
- 1:00:14Speaker 7: during the game here. You got beat during the game. And,
- 1:00:17Speaker 7: and over time had chances, you know? So yeah, it's,
- 1:00:20Speaker 7: it's disappointing. I, I didn't think that was going to
- 1:00:23Speaker 7: run the table. Certainly after Notre Dame, you get excited
- 1:00:25Speaker 7: and you think, well, Hey, maybe, but college football is
- 1:00:29Speaker 7: shown this year. It's hard to do that. You know,
- 1:00:32Speaker 7: Miami winning at Notre Dame is they run the table.
- 1:00:34Speaker 7: That'd be wild. Like I doubt we have a, an
- 1:00:37Speaker 7: undefeated team. It's just really hard. And so, yeah, the,
- 1:00:41Speaker 7: the way BYU lost was disappointing. You know, I, I
- 1:00:44Speaker 7: didn't feel like BYU missed LJ Martin against Notre Dame.
- 1:00:47Speaker 7: I really felt it last week, just their ability to
- 1:00:49Speaker 7: move the chains. They kind of ran for only what
- 1:00:51Speaker 7: they walked for. See, you know, see when a mole
- 1:00:55Speaker 7: was back, but he doesn't quite have the kind of
- 1:00:57Speaker 7: lateral movement quite yet coming off.
- 1:00:59Speaker 8: A knee injury.
- 1:01:00Speaker 7: Preston Rex got hurt. If you had a couple of injuries,
- 1:01:02Speaker 7: by the way, Kyle's far choke banged up, Evan Johnson,
- 1:01:04Speaker 7: not going to play this week. cornerback. So you're always
- 1:01:08Speaker 7: a little banged up, still up, no algae, mine's still
- 1:01:09Speaker 7: no Andrew Gentry. So trying to, trying to get healthy.
- 1:01:12Speaker 7: And you know, those guys are all hopefully targeting next week.
- 1:01:15Speaker 7: Cause that's the biggest game in the history of the rivalry.
- 1:01:18Speaker 7: I know BYU plays ASU this week, but there's, there's
- 1:01:21Speaker 7: never been a top 15 BYU tugging and it could
- 1:01:23Speaker 7: be top 10 very easily.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Okay. I want to go back to the end of
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: game scenario here, because I think you're right that the
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: correct thing to do is when you lose on a
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: one play flag or no flag, right? You got to
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: remember that there were 75 other plays that you could
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: have won the game on.
- 1:01:39Speaker 7: Totally.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: But also.
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: It's really hard to win.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Like you also said in that last answer, it's very
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: difficult to win. So expecting Notre Dame or BYU or
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: UCF or anybody to be like, oh, well, we can survive,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: you know, malpractice by the referees. because it didn't come
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: down to that one play. It's like, no, they're supposed
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: to do their job too. Yeah. In a perfect world,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: you're so good that every game's a two score win.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: And even when the referees, you know, give an unnecessary
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: flag or take an unnecessary flag away, like.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: You still should be able to survive that fine, but
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: it's hard to win.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: So I really was bothered by the end of game
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: scenario with UCF and BYU, because I thought that they
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: screwed up. with the, the end of game scenario, the
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: 10 second runoff, the helping helmet being ripped off, whether
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: that's a face mask or not flag, you know, then
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: the 10 second runoff, they admitted again, after the fact,
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: it's like with the Notre Dame game, that that was
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: not adjudicated properly. And then the roughing was very clearly
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: a makeup call for me.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: It's like, all right.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: So you acknowledge that you screwed up and that, you know,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: you owe UCF something. So instead of, allowing BYU to
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: make a play, which is one of the most like
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: difficult plays to make in college football, a blocked field
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: goal or kick attempt. Now you're going to do like
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: a ticky tack roughing. And it felt like a makeup
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: call to me. And I, I don't like that. I
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: don't like when, you know, two wrongs in that case,
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: don't make a right for me. So I just, I
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: have a really a huge problem with the way that
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: in several games this year, and it happens at BYU
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: has been involved in two of them. several games this year,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: college football officiating, they've kind of said, oh yeah, whoops, sorry.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: We screwed that up. It's like these kids deserve better.
- 1:03:32Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:03:33Speaker 7: And, and there was a lot happening there for sure. I,
- 1:03:36Speaker 7: I just personally am one that's like, Hey, if there's
- 1:03:38Speaker 7: something that I did that I control, I'm going to
- 1:03:40Speaker 7: own that. And, and I think BYU did a good
- 1:03:42Speaker 7: job of like, we should play better early in the game.
- 1:03:44Speaker 7: They didn't complain about, you know, the roughing, the, the
- 1:03:47Speaker 7: kicker call and listen, BYU made.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: They kind of did Kalani Kalani the question did because
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: that's what you should do as a.
- 1:03:55Speaker 7: Coach sure sure it's okay to question it but they
- 1:03:57Speaker 7: didn't like linger on it and make it ever all
- 1:03:59Speaker 7: about that their entire personality after the game right it's
- 1:04:02Speaker 7: like you know what we should have tackled better you
- 1:04:04Speaker 7: know and BYU got a fourth and goal stand like
- 1:04:07Speaker 7: that was incredible and Justin Kirkland down there pointing at
- 1:04:10Speaker 7: the bottom which was hilarious. He told me, I realized
- 1:04:13Speaker 7: there were a bunch of dudes on top of me.
- 1:04:14Speaker 7: I couldn't get up for a minute. So I just
- 1:04:16Speaker 7: decided I was going to aura farm this and yeah,
- 1:04:19Speaker 7: Fox cut to him and it was really funny, but yeah,
- 1:04:22Speaker 7: then BYU gets the ball, but then they kind of
- 1:04:24Speaker 7: play it conservatively. And that's just kind of how they've,
- 1:04:27Speaker 7: they are in those moments. They didn't want to risk
- 1:04:29Speaker 7: it more than they wanted to try and push it
- 1:04:31Speaker 7: and see. And so there were a bunch of moments,
- 1:04:34Speaker 7: but I'm with, I'm with you. Could it have been
- 1:04:36Speaker 7: officiated better? Yes. But could be why you have controlled
- 1:04:39Speaker 7: certain elements of that game much earlier?
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Absolutely. Speaker 0 7, Jeremy Jordan is our guest little
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: red and blue here on the Sean O'Connell show brought
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: to you by our friends at Murdoch Ford, Santa Quinn.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: So I I'm coming on the show on a Monday morning.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: Fired up, excited about Utah's big win over Houston on
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: Saturday night, the college game day situation worked out. The
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: blackout was fun. It was, you know, big play made
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: at the end of the game, defense forces a turnover.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: And I wanted the whole show to be about that.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: And at about, I don't know, 10, 15 AM, 11,
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: 15 AM we get, oh, by the way, 10 AM
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: is when the holy war is going to kick off.
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: And then of course, everyone is like, what? No, ruined
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: the whole show yesterday, Jerem, but.
- 1:05:27Speaker 7: Couldn't even sit in it and celebrate.
- 1:05:28Speaker 6: Come on.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: It was just like, can we talk Houston for a while, please?
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: But 10 a.m. kickoff for the Holy war. What do
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: you make of it?
- 1:05:37Speaker 7: Not my favorite. I don't love it. You know, I
- 1:05:39Speaker 7: love the buildup all day. I love what these two
- 1:05:41Speaker 7: teams have created in terms of owning the late night kicks.
- 1:05:45Speaker 7: Let's be honest in the mountain time zone and the
- 1:05:48Speaker 7: Pacific time zone, you got to have teams that are interesting.
- 1:05:51Speaker 7: And if Oregon or Washington or Utah or UCLA or
- 1:05:54Speaker 7: BYU are available USC, like you, you need those games
- 1:05:59Speaker 7: at night for the country. They want four TV windows
- 1:06:02Speaker 7: like this, that works. And I know Mark Carlin has
- 1:06:05Speaker 7: not been a huge fan of the eight for teams,
- 1:06:06Speaker 7: BYU put originally I hated the eight 15 when BYU
- 1:06:09Speaker 7: was independent. Cause they weren't always getting good games at
- 1:06:12Speaker 7: those times. So it's like, really, we have to watch
- 1:06:14Speaker 7: this random game, you know, at eight 15 BYU and Utah,
- 1:06:17Speaker 7: I feel like have for the most part embrace the, Hey,
- 1:06:21Speaker 7: we own the night. We own this window. Like we're
- 1:06:23Speaker 7: getting a good number because back East, yes, it's late,
- 1:06:26Speaker 7: but people know, Hey, that's and you're engaged. And so
- 1:06:35Speaker 7: to flip that on its head and have it at
- 1:06:37Speaker 7: 10 a.m. and have just, you start the day, boom,
- 1:06:39Speaker 7: you're right into it. There is value in going right
- 1:06:42Speaker 7: from game day into ABC or ESPN. Like the handoff
- 1:06:45Speaker 7: is kind of nice. I think the number will be good.
- 1:06:47Speaker 7: I think the country will be interested no matter what
- 1:06:49Speaker 7: time this game was played. But ideally, this game would
- 1:06:53Speaker 7: have been at, you know, 1.30 or 5.30 or frankly,
- 1:06:55Speaker 7: even 8.15. If it was that late, it's my least
- 1:06:58Speaker 7: favorite time for a game. I prefer watching kind of
- 1:07:02Speaker 7: the big 10 at that time or whatever. But in
- 1:07:05Speaker 7: the end, it is what it is. It's BLU top.
- 1:07:08Speaker 7: Once the game kicks, no one's going to care what
- 1:07:10Speaker 7: time it was. But yeah, if I had my pick,
- 1:07:12Speaker 7: I would have put it probably at like five or six.
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: Speaker 0 7, Does it change the game at all?
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: I mean, I don't like the idea and part of
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: the pushback from fans is just like, oh, we're going
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: to play better at night. I'm like, dude, it's the
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: holy war. play, play when you're going to play. It's
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: everyone is going to be massively up for this game.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: Do you think that it changes the actual game at all?
- 1:07:36Speaker 7: I think maybe just for the fans, like just because,
- 1:07:39Speaker 7: you know, we, we'd all get, you know, and I
- 1:07:42Speaker 7: don't speak for everyone, but how lathered up is everyone
- 1:07:45Speaker 7: at 10 AM, whether that's emotionally or, or with certain
- 1:07:49Speaker 7: certain drink, you know, at that point of the day,
- 1:07:51Speaker 7: like what's that going to be like for this game?
- 1:07:54Speaker 7: And then, you know, I, I think back to like
- 1:07:57Speaker 7: BYU has not beaten Utah by, by 10 plus since 96.
- 1:08:02Speaker 7: And that's the last time I can remember this game
- 1:08:04Speaker 7: being early like this. And so it's part of me
- 1:08:06Speaker 7: as a BYU guy that loves that vibe, you know,
- 1:08:09Speaker 7: BYU ran for 300 yards in 96 with a great
- 1:08:11Speaker 7: team and had success. I don't see that happening this year,
- 1:08:14Speaker 7: but certainly I like the energy from sort of remembering
- 1:08:16Speaker 7: that historically, but yeah, it's going to be interesting. There've
- 1:08:19Speaker 7: been day games over the years back when, you know,
- 1:08:22Speaker 7: your game wasn't, you know, TV wasn't, it was a
- 1:08:25Speaker 7: big deal, but it wasn't as big of a deal.
- 1:08:27Speaker 7: Like one of the greatest games ever played in this rivalry,
- 1:08:29Speaker 7: you know, some of them were on random channels, the
- 1:08:32Speaker 7: mountain or versus or whatever. Like it just kind of
- 1:08:35Speaker 7: doesn't matter that just when they kick off the, the
- 1:08:38Speaker 7: focus is on that in that moment. So I don't,
- 1:08:41Speaker 7: I don't think it actually UA fans are going to
- 1:08:48Speaker 7: be watching Notre Dame and rooting big time for them
- 1:08:50Speaker 7: against Miami that day, because if Notre Dame beats Miami, that,
- 1:08:54Speaker 7: that really helps you always play off chances.
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: So I I'm split right down the middle on this thing,
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: because I think the correct approach for both teams and
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: it's how the players and the coaches are going to
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: process it. But I think it should be the fan base.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: I think you should want this game. You should say,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: we'll meet you in a parking lot at 3 a.m.
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: and play this game, and it's still going to be
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: the best event of the year. I want everyone to
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: have that mentality about it. I also understand that there's
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: a reality that you have to live in. For the
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: universities and for the Big 12 Conference especially, they want
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: a game like this to have a national television window,
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: and ABC or ESPN at 10 a.m., The big noon
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: kickoff slot, whatever. That's good. That's a place where a
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: lot of people are supposed to watch your game. Should
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: I be caring if people watch the game? This is
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: our game. Nobody's ever going to understand it. I want
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: them to appreciate it, but no one's ever going to
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: understand it or care about it like we do and
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: like they do about Ohio State, Michigan or USC, Notre
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: Dame or whatever. It's too late.
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: You're not going to catch up.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: Catering to a national audience, I think It bothers me
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: a little bit, even while I acknowledge that it's good
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: for exposure for the universities and for the conference.
- 1:10:16Speaker 7: And my understanding of how this works is the league
- 1:10:20Speaker 7: can sort of submit what they want, but it's the
- 1:10:22Speaker 7: TV networks that actually pick.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: 100%.
- 1:10:24Speaker 7: Who, who has the, who has the first pick that week?
- 1:10:27Speaker 7: And obviously ABC ESPN, they wanted it because it's the
- 1:10:30Speaker 7: last two weeks. Fox was like, we want BYU at
- 1:10:33Speaker 7: one 30 in the afternoon. And they got them, you know,
- 1:10:36Speaker 7: last week with UCF and then this week, Arizona state,
- 1:10:38Speaker 7: same crew, Connor onion and RG three, by the way.
- 1:10:41Speaker 7: So yeah, it's, it's the country will be interested in
- 1:10:45Speaker 7: this though, because assuming both teams went out, went out
- 1:10:49Speaker 7: this week on that'll be interesting emotionally for that one
- 1:10:56Speaker 7: is it's not the story three bowl. So who knows,
- 1:10:58Speaker 7: but I I'm interested to see kind of what nationally
- 1:11:02Speaker 7: yet the reception is. Cause you're right. This is our game.
- 1:11:05Speaker 7: The beehives say we love, like this is the biggest
- 1:11:07Speaker 7: sporting event and stay every year. I, even if the
- 1:11:10Speaker 7: jazz maker make the playoffs, win a first round, you know,
- 1:11:14Speaker 7: mammoth go to the second round or make a run.
- 1:11:16Speaker 7: Like this is the, the event in the, in the state.
- 1:11:19Speaker 7: We love our pro sports, but what we really love
- 1:11:22Speaker 7: is BYU versus Utah. And so the fact that they're
- 1:11:25Speaker 7: going to both, both going to be in the top
- 1:11:28Speaker 7: 10 matchup for the first time. And the stage is
- 1:11:31Speaker 7: so big and bright. Like this is the most Epic
- 1:11:34Speaker 7: version of this game we will have ever had. And
- 1:11:36Speaker 7: hopefully it has an Epic finish because we've had so
- 1:11:38Speaker 7: many historically with this matchup.
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: Speaker 0 7, All right. Tell me, tell me the
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: official BYU sports nation, Jerem Jordan opinion on the Utah
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: versus Pat McAfee soap opera.
- 1:11:53Speaker 9: Okay.
- 1:11:53Speaker 7: I do think he's being a little dramatic. I, I,
- 1:11:58Speaker 7: and I do think that on the heels of being
- 1:12:00Speaker 7: at BYU and how sort of positive that was for
- 1:12:03Speaker 7: him and everybody. that any sort of resistance was met
- 1:12:09Speaker 7: with maybe an exaggeration there. Cause I saw the video
- 1:12:11Speaker 7: and I didn't think it was crazy, you know? And
- 1:12:14Speaker 7: when he mentioned a certain event that took place in Rome,
- 1:12:16Speaker 7: I thought that was out of pocket personally. But if he, like,
- 1:12:20Speaker 7: if he feels unsafe, that's up to him. But I
- 1:12:22Speaker 7: was like, but, but, where was there, there wasn't a
- 1:12:26Speaker 7: physical threat there. So in my personal opinion, I thought
- 1:12:29Speaker 7: it was a little much for, for, for the reaction.
- 1:12:33Speaker 7: He's entitled to feel how he wants to feel. But
- 1:12:34Speaker 7: me personally, I was like, Oh, he's, he's feeling pretty
- 1:12:38Speaker 7: deep about this right now. I'm not sure why.
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: Yeah. I think that that sums it up well for me.
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: I don't need to add anything there, but we're not
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: going to get game day again for the Holy war, right?
- 1:12:52Speaker 7: No, no. I didn't see when they came for Houston,
- 1:12:54Speaker 7: I was like, oh, there goes, there goes the whole
- 1:12:56Speaker 7: war game. I, I was hoping you.
- 1:12:58Speaker 6: Would be there.
- 1:12:59Speaker 7: I thought that would be cool. So yeah, I don't
- 1:13:01Speaker 7: think we'd get anything. They're probably going to Notre Dame.
- 1:13:03Speaker 7: Let's be honest. Notre Dame is going to be big time.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: So you already alluded to this.
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: You think that you think that Utah survives against Cincinnati
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: and sets up that game as Utah undefeated BYU one loss.
- 1:13:40Speaker 7: You know, BYU made
- 1:13:46Speaker 7: it weird and unfortunately lost. And so it's certainly one,
- 1:13:49Speaker 7: one to watch with Cincinnati and, and French has played
- 1:13:52Speaker 7: well and, and you know, tab has a great game
- 1:13:55Speaker 7: rushing the ball. So yeah, it'll be, it'll be interesting.
- 1:13:57Speaker 7: Cincinnati has been interesting this year.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: So yeah.
- 1:14:00Speaker 7: And then it's tough for Utah as well at Arizona.
- 1:14:03Speaker 7: The week after BYU is really sneaky. Like the only
- 1:14:06Speaker 7: loss for Arizona is one at BYU. That's a lone
- 1:14:09Speaker 7: loss and it's on the road. So this is an
- 1:14:12Speaker 7: interesting three game stretch certainly for, for Utah.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it certainly is.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: The rest of the conference, we saw Texas Tech lose
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: for the first time this last week. You already talked
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: about that with Cincinnati being the team that beats them.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: BYU now one loss. It's still crowded at the top,
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: but it's now Utah slightly ahead, and then BYU and
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: Texas Tech, and.
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: How good is Arizona, like you just mentioned?
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: So handicap the rest of the conference for me behind
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: Utah right now.
- 1:14:45Speaker 7: I don't think texts, you know, going to lose again.
- 1:14:48Speaker 7: I think that went out. We'll see their options kind
- 1:14:51Speaker 7: of sounded a little bit, although the setback last week
- 1:14:53Speaker 7: makes you wonder, but their, their defense struggled, which is
- 1:14:56Speaker 7: a surprise. Utah controlled some destiny. Although this three game
- 1:14:59Speaker 7: stretch is tough. Arizona can play. They can play spoiler
- 1:15:03Speaker 7: here a bit because they're a team that is experienced
- 1:15:07Speaker 7: and motivated and they play Texas tech this week. They
- 1:15:10Speaker 7: play Utah in a couple of weeks. BYU certainly to
- 1:15:13Speaker 7: me at this point, and it has the easiest path
- 1:15:16Speaker 7: to the end of the game at Utah, certainly very tough,
- 1:15:18Speaker 7: but Arizona state Baylor at Kansas Cincinnati, you know, that's there's,
- 1:15:23Speaker 7: there's a, you know, hopefully a bunch of wins in
- 1:15:25Speaker 7: there for BYU. So it's going to be interesting. I
- 1:15:27Speaker 7: think whoever's in the big 12 title game is a
- 1:15:29Speaker 7: zero or one last team. I think if you lose twice,
- 1:15:31Speaker 7: you're totally out there. Tiebreakers will probably come into play.
- 1:15:35Speaker 7: And frankly, BYU is in a position because of the
- 1:15:39Speaker 7: Notre Dame game. They don't, they don't have to make
- 1:15:41Speaker 7: the big 12 title game to get an at-large potentially
- 1:15:43Speaker 7: depending on how things shake out. You know, if you
- 1:15:47Speaker 7: lose to Utah and it's competitive, but they win the
- 1:15:49Speaker 7: rest of the games and they're 10 and two and
- 1:15:51Speaker 7: Notre Dame beats Miami and BYU doesn't go to the
- 1:15:53Speaker 7: big total title game. I feel way better about BYU's
- 1:15:56Speaker 7: chances than the last two years. if Notre Dame actually
- 1:16:00Speaker 7: beats Miami. Now, if Notre Dame doesn't be Miami, oh boy,
- 1:16:03Speaker 7: but they might be out again at 10 and two,
- 1:16:05Speaker 7: because who will they have beaten? And if they kind
- 1:16:08Speaker 7: of stay in the top 10, top 12, they're automatically
- 1:16:11Speaker 7: in for the top 12. So we'll see, man, like the,
- 1:16:15Speaker 7: the league could get two bids in very easily. It's if,
- 1:16:18Speaker 7: if Utah ran the table or at one loss, they
- 1:16:21Speaker 7: feel like they're probably going to be in, you know,
- 1:16:24Speaker 7: can tech still get in? Can somebody else surprise them
- 1:16:28Speaker 7: and get to the big title game and get the
- 1:16:29Speaker 7: auto bid. And then BYU and Utah or Texas tech
- 1:16:31Speaker 7: are in, I think there's still a chance for multi
- 1:16:34Speaker 7: bids here. Now three feels like a lot, but there's
- 1:16:36Speaker 7: still a chance. There's so much parody, man. It's pretty crazy.
- 1:16:40Speaker 7: And it just thinks there's so many teams in the league.
- 1:16:42Speaker 7: Although I love the BYU in the league because with
- 1:16:46Speaker 7: just tiebreakers and unbalanced schedules, it's just difficult to manage.
- 1:16:49Speaker 7: No one asked for this. I am glad you're always
- 1:16:52Speaker 7: in the big 12, but it's going to be weird
- 1:16:54Speaker 7: at the end. We had this a couple of years
- 1:16:55Speaker 7: ago with BYU and tiebreakers and they didn't get it.
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: I haven't looked yet to see what the possibility of
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: two holy war games is, depending on how things play out. Like,
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: is it right? That'd be weird. Like where you have Utah, BYU,
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: and then Utah, BYU again in Arlington. That would be weird.
- 1:17:14Speaker 7: What I wish, what I wish we could do, we're
- 1:17:16Speaker 7: going to 2014 playoffs. So it's going to be like that. like, okay,
- 1:17:22Speaker 7: the four of you were playing two semis and then
- 1:17:25Speaker 7: the championship game. And then you, you know what? We
- 1:17:27Speaker 7: know that these teams are going or whatever, if it
- 1:17:29Speaker 7: was a shorter, I guess, smaller playoff, maybe that'd work,
- 1:17:33Speaker 7: but there is a chance, right? I there's all kinds
- 1:17:36Speaker 7: of tiebreakers. I'm not the guy that loves looking at those.
- 1:17:39Speaker 7: Although I did find a website where you can manipulate
- 1:17:42Speaker 7: every game and then it will tell you, well, this
- 1:17:44Speaker 7: team wins on this tiebreaker. I'm like, thank you. I
- 1:17:46Speaker 7: just need this automated in this AI era. I don't
- 1:17:48Speaker 7: want to be looking up tiebreakers.
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: Don't tell me the website because I'll spend way too
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: much time trying to figure out.
- 1:17:55Speaker 7: I will text you.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: Oh, fine.
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: Uh, Jim, appreciate your perspective.
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: Uh, next week when you join us, there will be
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: open hostility, but right now I appreciate you very much.
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: I cannot wait.
- 1:18:11Speaker 7: It's going to be the biggest BYU tugging ever.
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: That's pretty awesome. And we've been saying that a lot.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: We've been, we've been like doing the hyperbole thing with
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: these games, but this one, I think it's true.
- 1:18:22Speaker 7: Speaker 4, literally will be. Yeah. We never had top
- 1:18:25Speaker 7: of team. Well, you know, the closest was the way
- 1:18:27Speaker 7: I think it was what eight versus 16.
- 1:18:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:18:31Speaker 7: So can't wait. We all did when we went home safely.
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: I like that. I like that.
- 1:18:39Speaker 7: All right. We'll talk. Was the RVs that had the
- 1:18:41Speaker 7: turnovers thing? Were they the ones in Salt Lake?
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:18:44Speaker 7: I was like, Oh man.
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: Oh, all right. We'll talk next week. Thanks, Jim. Have
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: a good call on Friday.
- 1:18:52Speaker 7: Thank you. Thank you.
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: Jim Jordan, red and blue BYU sports nation. That conversation
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: brought to you every week by our friends at Murdoch Ford,
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: Santa Quinn, BYU sports. I like how he phrased it.
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: They've used their mulligan. Utah still has theirs. Texas Tech
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: and BYU used their mulligans last week. Arizona used their
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: mulligan in week two against BYU. It's going to be
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: a weird race down the stretch. Utah's got to win
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: at Cincinnati. Don't fall victim to the same trap that
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: caught BYU a week ago.
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: All right, the Daily Dump is coming next.
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: We got our own soap opera going on in Salt
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: Lake City with Pat McAfee and the University of Utah,
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: but have you heard about what's going on with Texas
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: Tech and their owner, effectively, Cody Campbell? He's upset. We'll
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: talk about it in the Daily Dump next on the
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: Feeling out of the loop?
- 1:20:01Speaker 9: Let's catch up on today's biggest headlines in the Daily
- 1:20:03Speaker 9: News Dump, where we flush out the biggest stories of
- 1:20:06Speaker 9: the day on the Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number
- 1:20:10Speaker 9: one sports talk, ESPN 792.1 FM, brought to you by
- 1:20:15Speaker 9: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling.
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: Just look for the truck with the duck.
- 1:20:26Speaker 11: All right.
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: Time for the Daily Dump.
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: We've got a collection of stories here brought to you
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: by Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. This is probably big
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: news in West Texas. I don't know how much they're
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: talking about the feud between Utah and Pat McAfee that
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: lasted 12 hours, got squashed. University of Utah issued a
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: public apology to Pat McAfee. McAfee, unsurprisingly, as far as
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: I know, not responded. I don't think it's necessary that
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: he does, but anyway, a little soap opera going on
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: in similar fashion with Cody Campbell, who is famous for
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: one thing and one thing only. And that is being
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: a billionaire oil Baron who used to play football at
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: Texas tech and decided that he wanted to deploy his, uh,
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: riches to make Texas tech, a more relevant football team.
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: He has bankrolled the entire athletic department effectively at, uh,
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: Texas tech university. Now there's, there's a radio station in Lubbock, Texas.
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: Called a double.
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: T 97.3 Lubbock sports tech Lubbock sports station flagship for
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: Texas tech sports. So double T 97.3 is ESPN 92.1, right?
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: The flagship home They also are an affiliate for the
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: Rangers and the Cowboys. They've got a morning drive live show.
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: They've got an afternoon drive live show. They do national
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: programming in the middle of the day.
- 1:22:03Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: They are local Homer radio, just like we are. And
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: one of their producers who I think is probably, he
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: has literally 238 followers.
- 1:22:17Speaker 12: Okay.
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: He's a, He's a young kid. By his face, I
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: would say.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: He's between 20 and 25 years of age.
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: All right?
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: So just barely cutting his teeth in the business. Cody Campbell,
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: after Texas Tech lost this last weekend to Cincinnati, he tweeted,
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: there's no excuse or reason to lose a game like this.
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: We have to be better. This kid....
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: To 238 followers in response. Uh, by the way, one,
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: one of.
- 1:22:59Speaker 3: One point, one of 1600 different comments on this post
- 1:23:05Speaker 3: on this tweet on this X post by the number
- 1:23:09Speaker 3: of followers, I'd say that he, I am the, I
- 1:23:12Speaker 3: am him of this, uh, radio station of the, of
- 1:23:15Speaker 3: the home with the youth.
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: So you're a little bit more firmly established in your
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: career than he is. He's, He's just like, you can't
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: even grow a beard. This kid. All right.
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: But he said on him, he, he tweeted in response.
- 1:23:27Speaker 11: One of.
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: The 1600 comments is from this kid for the sake
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: of the program and fan base. Just stop talking. Please
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: stop tweeting Cody Campbell. They don't like what he has
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: to say. They do like that. He spends his money
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: on the program. Again, when you're wildly successful, you become polarizing.
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: When you're somebody who people, some people in Lubbock, Texas
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: think that Cody Campbell should not be able to walk
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: on the field during games, should not be able to
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: just because he has all that money, exercise a bunch
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: of power and influence over Texas tech football, basketball, softball, whatever.
- 1:24:05Speaker 5: We'll let you shop at one of the targets. You
- 1:24:07Speaker 5: can't shop at both. And here's the thing I like.
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: We all get jealous of these people who have more power, influence,
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: and money than us. I think that's where a lot
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: of this stuff is rooted. I don't know enough about
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: whether or not Cody Campbell's a nice guy or not
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: to say whether he deserves the criticism that he gets,
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: but this is from a kid who's got no followers.
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: The only reason that it even made any like waves
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: with Cody Campbell at all is probably because the kids
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: got a headset on in his avatar picture. So he
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: works for the Texas tech flagship. Is that what you're saying?
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: He's a producer for the station.
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: He, but he's like a part-time producer for the station.
- 1:24:49Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: Cody Campbell is responds to that kid's tweet asking him
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: not to talk. Cody Campbell says, how about for the
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: sake of the program, in quotes, using the kid's own words,
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: everybody at Texas Tech tagging the athletic department stops talking
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: and doing interviews on Double T 97.3. Ooh, burn. And
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: then says, tags the senior associate A.D., For Texas tech
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: university at the same tweet and says, let's discuss.
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: So Cody Campbell.
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: Gets told to shut up basically by a producer on
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: the flagship home unwise tweet by this kid and says, Hey,
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: how about Texas tech doesn't do interviews on your radio
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: station anymore. And I could tell you as a flagship
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: home of the Utes, that would be fairly devastating for
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: a flagship station to have a the program owner effectively, right? If, uh,
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: expense Eccles said, Hey, you know what I want? I
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: want nobody to go on ESPN 700. from Utah football,
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: Utah basketball, Utah gymnastics, Utah baseball. We'd be like, what? No,
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: please don't do that. Please. Please don't do that. We're
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: the home of the youth. We always try to emphasize
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: the Eccles when we say rice Eccles. Okay. Like we
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: love you. So Cody Campbell is, is not happy that
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: this kid tweeted at him and went after him. And
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: that is, that is definitely punching down by Cody Campbell.
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: Theme of the show today.
- 1:26:31Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: Cody Campbell is like, here's the thing. He played for
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: Texas tech. He was on the team.
- 1:26:42Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: So he's not only financially invested, he's emotionally invested and
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: The tweets that he sends sometimes are from X player,
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: Cody Campbell. They're not from billionaire businessman, Cody Campbell. He's
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: not good at separating those two things. And Texas tech
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: has to be grateful that he's not good at separating
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: those two things. Because if he was, he'd be like
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: a lot of the rich people that, you know, they're like, Hey,
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: you're going to donate to your Alma mater's NIL program.
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: And they're just like, no, how do you think I
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: got rich by wasting money?
- 1:27:13Speaker 7: No.
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: Like there's a lot of people who could give a
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: chunk of change to BYU, to Utah, to Utah state.
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: And they're just like, yeah, probably not. The guy who
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: owns our building could make Bronco Mendenhall's life a lot easier.
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: Shout out to Deloitte.
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: Deloitte doesn't do that.
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: Cash Valley.
- 1:27:34Speaker 5: I don't know if he lives up there still, but
- 1:27:37Speaker 5: he grew up at cash Valley.
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: I mean, it's, they're not, you don't have to do it.
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:27:42Speaker 12: Right.
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: No, no universities entitled to the money that they're, that
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: their alumni have earned. Cody Campbell has thrown a bunch
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: of money at Texas tech and he's emotional about it.
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: And then his kids just like, please stop talking about
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: the program. Stop tweeting. And he's like, Hey, how about
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: I burn down your life kid? It's like, Oh no,
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: don't do that.
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: I would say, and two
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: things can be true at once. I would say.
- 1:28:18Speaker 5: Maybe think that, but don't tweet that to this producer
- 1:28:22Speaker 5: at the flagship station. And then I would also say, Cody, like, kid,
- 1:28:27Speaker 5: you'd not punch down like that.
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: Here's the thing though. I actually appreciate that.
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: He tweeted it back because he could have just called
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: the associate athletic director. and been like, no Texas tech
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: people on this radio station ever again. He could have
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: made it happen behind the scenes known like this way.
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: the public knows that he's being petty and thin skinned.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: So it's like insulates the radio station a little bit.
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: It protects this kid a little bit because he very
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: easily could have picked up his phone and.
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: Been like, fire that producer.
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: Also no Texas tech athletes or coaches on your radio station.
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: And that would have been the end of it. And
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: no soup for you. No soup for you yet.
- 1:29:10Speaker 5: Just that is quite a reaction by our guy, Cody Campbell.
- 1:29:16Speaker 5: And this also allows the, the owners of the radio station,
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: the PD, the program director of the radio station, the
- 1:29:26Speaker 5: bosses over there to, you know, make a justifiable reaction
- 1:29:30Speaker 5: of their own and be like, okay, we better, uh,
- 1:29:32Speaker 5: try to smooth this over and say, Hey, that's just our,
- 1:29:35Speaker 5: that's just our very good young part-time producer getting a
- 1:29:40Speaker 5: little overzealous.
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: Uh, everything's fine.
- 1:29:43Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: Oh man. Um, Did you, so we talked about how
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: the WNBA finals have to share real estate with NBA
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: regular season in Atlanta, right?
- 1:29:56Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: Game six. Is it tomorrow night? And I think, is
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: it tomorrow night or tonight? The, the Valkyrie and the
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: dream have a situation. The Atlanta dream have a situation. The, the,
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: Golden state Valkyries also, it is in two, in two nights,
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: there are two days. It's a, it's a day game.
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: There's a situation where the Valkyries could win the championship
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: in this game. They could close it out, take it down,
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: win the series, right? If they do, they are not
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: going to be able to celebrate on the court. Did
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: you hear about this? I missed this. I saw it
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: in the notes and I'm very curious what it's about.
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: So they've already moved the NBA game to later. They
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: moved the WNBA finals game to earlier in the day.
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: It's 1030 mountain time. It's an early game when a
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: 1230 local time, but it's an early game.
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: So they push that up.
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: They push the NBA, see the NBA game back, but
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: they're really cutting it close on how can you, can
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: you change over the arena quick, right? If they do
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: the whole post-game rigamarole champion, confetti interviews, Speaker 3 0
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: on the podium and podium on the court, all that
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: kind of stuff. Although I think it's NBC. So it
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: wouldn't be Holy row.
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: They cannot meet the window, the change over window.
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: So there's this very strong possibility that if the WNBA
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: champion is crowned, if the Valkyries win and close out
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: the series, they are going to be rapidly ushered off
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: the floor where they just won the first championship in
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: franchise history.
- 1:31:44Speaker 5: They're a brand new franchise. The confetti will be coming down,
- 1:31:47Speaker 5: but it won't hit any of them. They'll just be
- 1:31:49Speaker 5: walking off the floor.
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: And that they will be asked to go celebrate in
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: the locker room or, and this one is even more
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: insulting on an adjoining practice court.
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: Apparently There's a practice court in the arena.
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: Wow. And they were like, and of course everyone in
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: the WNBA is up in arms about it. And everyone
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: in the NBA is kind of like, I'm sorry, but
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: we have to like, you can't move this game. We
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: already did. We can't like change the venue, change the nights. We,
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: and so I think honestly, if you're, I know the
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: WNBA is searching for a new commissioner and you can't
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: actually ask players to do this, but you kind of
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: gotta be like, uh, don't win.
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: Don't close up the series in this game.
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:32:33Speaker 5: Send it back to golden state, back to San Francisco.
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: It would be celebrate properly there. It would be way
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: better to go celebrate a home anyway, but to be
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: able to celebrate, because imagine the horrible look that is
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: going to be.
- 1:32:47Speaker 2: Imagine being, I feel worst.
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: Here for the security staff, like the random usher people
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: that are going to be in charge of getting them
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: off the court.
- 1:32:59Speaker 5: I'd by the way, getting the fans for the WNBA
- 1:33:03Speaker 5: finals game out of the building and then ushering in
- 1:33:08Speaker 5: the fans who I'm sure many of them also have
- 1:33:11Speaker 5: a ticket to the Hawks game later, but there's many
- 1:33:14Speaker 5: that will not that only have a ticket for the
- 1:33:16Speaker 5: Hawks game and only have tickets for the WNBA game.
- 1:33:19Speaker 5: So like that's man, that's going to be a zoo. Um,
- 1:33:23Speaker 5: if that's how, if the series ends Thursday, I was,
- 1:33:28Speaker 5: you're used to saying, whatever day night, right? I was
- 1:33:32Speaker 5: about to say Thursday night. It's literally Thursday here. It's
- 1:33:37Speaker 5: it starts before our show starts.
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: So see like this is really early golden state, Atlanta.
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: If they go to game seven, that'll be on Halloween
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: at 8 PM Eastern.
- 1:33:49Speaker 6: Jeez.
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: So holy crap.
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: What are you doing? WNBA.
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: No complaining about the holy war viewing window.
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: This is a literal championship series and they have to
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: play on Halloween night.
- 1:34:01Speaker 6: No one's going to be watching.
- 1:34:04Speaker 5: It's it's really tough for the WNBA because their playoffs
- 1:34:12Speaker 5: happen right at the beginning of football season. They have
- 1:34:17Speaker 5: their regular seasons in the summer where there's a lot
- 1:34:19Speaker 5: less going on, but the playoffs are the beginning of
- 1:34:21Speaker 5: football season, not unlike major league baseball, but of course,
- 1:34:25Speaker 5: MLB is a lot more established and a lot more
- 1:34:28Speaker 5: established audience. So this is, this is tough for the
- 1:34:31Speaker 5: WNBA because no matter what day you choose, you can pick,
- 1:34:34Speaker 5: you can point to something that you go, Oh, that's
- 1:34:37Speaker 5: probably going to be, it's probably gonna be overshadowed by
- 1:34:39Speaker 5: that this time of year.
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: So it's tough. Speaking from experience. PFL did an event
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: on Halloween night in Vegas a few years ago.
- 1:34:49Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: The rating on that did not come back very good
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: because of course it was, I think a Friday, a
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: Friday night, Halloween show, a world series game.
- 1:35:02Speaker 3: You're just also it's Halloween. People are going, they're like
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: trick or treating. They're going to parties. They're doing the
- 1:35:08Speaker 3: stuff that they do. So sorry about that game seven.
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: It's also just still better than closing it out in
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: game six and having one of those people that wear
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: like the little, you know, event services uniforms as you're
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: trying to cut down the nets. No, no, no, no.
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: Get down off.
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: No, get off the ladder.
- 1:35:30Speaker 5: We have an area where you can cut in a
- 1:35:32Speaker 5: ladder where you can cut down the net. So the
- 1:35:34Speaker 5: practice court over here yet that's, that's a, it's a
- 1:35:37Speaker 5: terrible look too, for the WNBA. I just, Their worst nightmare,
- 1:35:43Speaker 5: all due respect to the Atlanta Dream, their worst nightmare
- 1:35:46Speaker 5: is that the Atlanta Dream made these finals because it
- 1:35:49Speaker 5: has made things so... It's been such a logistic nightmare
- 1:35:53Speaker 5: for them to try to navigate Hawks games and concerts
- 1:35:57Speaker 5: that were already scheduled. And the Dream were only... They
- 1:36:02Speaker 5: only banked on the Dream being in the... To lose
- 1:36:06Speaker 5: in the playoffs at some point. Like, yeah, you can
- 1:36:07Speaker 5: play in State Farm Arena because... By the time we
- 1:36:10Speaker 5: have conflicts, you're not going to be in it anyway. Oh,
- 1:36:13Speaker 5: you're two wins away from a championship. They should have
- 1:36:18Speaker 5: planned more ahead for this, and yet here we are.
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: They have to do something like this if the Valkyries
- 1:36:26Speaker 5: close it out tonight.
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: I'm with you. Maybe quietly. Let's go win this at
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: home on Saturday.
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: LeBron James personalized handshakes.
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: Are you a fan? Have you seen this? He's been
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: doing it everywhere in his career. He has the cool
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: guy personalized handshake.
- 1:36:46Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: With every teammate. I've noticed it. I couldn't tell you
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: even one off the top of my head what one is. Well,
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: this one you're going to remember because it's from a
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: key and piece couch key and peel sketch. I don't know.
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: Hopefully all of you have seen it. If you haven't,
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: the Barack Obama.
- 1:37:04Speaker 9: Oh yeah.
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: Handshake line.
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: Yeah. where all the brothers and the sisters get like
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: switching handshakes.
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: They get a really cool one. LeBron is doing that.
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: He's got, he's got a Caucasian teammate in Philadelphia named
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: Dean Wade. Oh yeah. And the handshake line is absolutely hilarious.
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: Now this is obviously self-aware by both players here, but
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: I'm sure Dean gave his proper consent. It's so fantastic.
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: Just go watch it. LeBron and everybody else. It's like,
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: a choreographed routine. And then Dean Wade is handshake and
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: a nod.
- 1:37:42Speaker 8: Uh-huh.
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: Hello. And then he gets to the night. It's so good.
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: It's exactly like the skit. So go check it out.
- 1:37:51Speaker 9: All right.
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: Got to take a break here. That's your daily dump
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: brought to you by our friends at Valley plumbing, heating,
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: cooling excavation. Look for the truck with the duck and
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: tell them OC sent you. Jeff Schwartz is going to
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: join us at the top of the hour. I'll tell
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: you who is at the, uh, Morgan Scali coaches show
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: next on ESPN 700 and 92 on FM.
- 1:38:12Speaker 9: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell show from the Murdoch
- 1:38:15Speaker 9: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92 on FM.
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: Morgan Scali coaches show tonight.
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: After the drive. Jai is going to be a guest.
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: Daniel Bray also going to be the player guest. So
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: Bill Riley, Sly, Morgan Scali, Jai Moy, and Daniel Bray.
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: That's a fun little lineup.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: I like that. I just want a full breakdown, like
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: five minutes long of the bull rush. I want Jai
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: to tell it in his own words. And then I
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: want Daniel Bray to tell it in his words. Then
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: I want Sly to tell it in his words. And
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: I want Bill Riley to finish it off that bull
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: rush where Jai threw a 330 pound offensive guard into
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: his own quarterback for a sec. That's, that's what I
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: want the whole coach's show to be tonight.
- 1:39:13Speaker 5: And I want Sly to ask him, Do you realize
- 1:39:17Speaker 5: that you are going to be in that guy's nightmares
- 1:39:20Speaker 5: for the rest of his life?
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: Do you realize that? That question that you asked yesterday.
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: I'm telling you, he is going to remember that. The
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: Houston offensive lineman whose name evades me for the moment.
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: He will never forget. Number 90.
- 1:39:34Speaker 5: Speaking of Sly, I think he's listening to us because
- 1:39:38Speaker 5: he is not saying Brandon Pagan anymore.
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: So shout out to you, Sly, for.
- 1:39:45Speaker 5: You know, making that correction. I, he's done a great
- 1:39:48Speaker 5: job with the, with Braden Pagan's name over the last
- 1:39:52Speaker 5: couple of games.
- 1:39:54Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: Jeff Schwartz is still going to join us, but before
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: we get to Jeff Schwartz, you've heard me say this
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: about a lot of different phone numbers.
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: Put this one in your phone.
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: 801-355-5550.
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: Why do you need to save that?
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: Well, because you need to have a guy when someone says,
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: oh my gosh, personal injury.
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: Oh, you got in an accident. Who are you going
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: to call? Oh, I got a guy.
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: 801-355-5550. In this case, you got many guys. Today, we
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: have Mark Stewart from The Advocates. If you've been hearing
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: our injury updates, those are brought to you by The Advocates, utahadvocates.com.
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: Available 24-7, 365. Mark, welcome.
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: Thank you. I mean, that number, you got to have
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: it in your phone. You got to have it.
- 1:40:38Speaker 8: Yeah, we tell people you need that number if you're
- 1:40:40Speaker 8: in an accident.
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: The first thing always is call the police.
- 1:40:43Speaker 8: And then right after that, call us. We're going to
- 1:40:45Speaker 8: tell you if you have a case, walk you through
- 1:40:47Speaker 8: what you can do. The big thing is, is these
- 1:40:49Speaker 8: insurance companies, which is who we go after, auto insurance
- 1:40:52Speaker 8: companies on auto accidents, they have billions and billions of dollars.
- 1:40:57Speaker 8: And the last thing they want you to do is
- 1:40:59Speaker 8: get an attorney because they want to work it with
- 1:41:01Speaker 8: you on their own because they know you don't know
- 1:41:03Speaker 8: what your case is worth and they can take advantage
- 1:41:05Speaker 8: of you.
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: So don't get taken advantage of. Call us.
- 1:41:08Speaker 8: The nice thing is you don't pay us anything out
- 1:41:10Speaker 8: of pocket. We only get paid if we're able to
- 1:41:13Speaker 8: get a settlement for you. So there's really no risk
- 1:41:15Speaker 8: to you to get us. So basically you can get
- 1:41:18Speaker 8: an expert to help you out for free, nothing out
- 1:41:21Speaker 8: of pocket. And we only get paid from the insurance
- 1:41:23Speaker 8: proceeds that we get for you.
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: So when I make that phone call, you become basically
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: my partner in an effort to get what I'm worth
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: or to get what my case is worth. That's right.
- 1:41:33Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: I mean, the name of our firm, The Advocates, that's
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: really what you're getting.
- 1:41:36Speaker 8: You're getting an advocate that's going to go against these
- 1:41:39Speaker 8: Fortune 500 companies and and fight so that you're not
- 1:41:42Speaker 8: just a number to them. You're actually a person and
- 1:41:46Speaker 8: we're able to describe to them your injuries, the impact
- 1:41:49Speaker 8: it had on your life. I mean, if you have
- 1:41:51Speaker 8: a severe injury from a car accident, there's a lot
- 1:41:53Speaker 8: of clients that we have that can never return back
- 1:41:55Speaker 8: to their job.
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: So their life has totally changed.
- 1:41:58Speaker 8: They can't do the hobbies that they did before because
- 1:42:01Speaker 8: now they have these injuries. And so it, a lifestyle
- 1:42:04Speaker 8: change for a lot of people and they need to
- 1:42:05Speaker 8: be compensated for that because it was at no fault
- 1:42:08Speaker 8: of their own that they're now dealing with those things.
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: And you're available 24-7, 365.
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: 24-7, 365.
- 1:42:12Speaker 8: So, yeah, there's going to be an attorney, if you
- 1:42:17Speaker 8: call in at 2.30 in the morning, that's going to
- 1:42:19Speaker 8: answer and.
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: Talk to you. 801-355-5550, utahadvocates.com. Mark, it seems like such
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: a no-brainer, right? For sure.
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: Where's the hesitation? Is it just an ignorance thing? People
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: don't know where to turn or what to do?
- 1:42:33Speaker 8: Yeah, I think it's that. And there's a fear of, hey,
- 1:42:35Speaker 8: it's an attorney. It's going to cost me a lot
- 1:42:37Speaker 8: of money. And that's why we always try and get
- 1:42:39Speaker 8: out that for us, You're not paying us up front
- 1:42:41Speaker 8: like most attorneys, whether you come in and they ask
- 1:42:43Speaker 8: for a big retainer up front. We only get paid
- 1:42:46Speaker 8: if we're able to get you a settlement. So like
- 1:42:48Speaker 8: I said earlier, there's really no risk to you. We're
- 1:42:50Speaker 8: not going to ask for your credit card. We're not
- 1:42:52Speaker 8: going to send you a bill in the mail. We
- 1:42:54Speaker 8: just get paid from the insurance company.
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: So really, it is a no brainer.
- 1:42:58Speaker 8: Give us a call. We always say, hey, our consultation
- 1:43:01Speaker 8: is free as well. We can tell you if you
- 1:43:03Speaker 8: have a case or not just over the phone.
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: And it's any kind of accident, auto accident, biking accident,
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: slip and fall, walking your dog, all that stuff.
- 1:43:10Speaker 8: Yep, motorcycle accident, premise case. We say, hey, if you
- 1:43:13Speaker 8: were injured and you feel like it wasn't your fault,
- 1:43:16Speaker 8: it was the fault of someone else, give us a
- 1:43:18Speaker 8: call and we can tell you if there's a case.
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: You did not deserve to be in that accident.
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: You don't deserve to live with that chronic pain or
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: the debilitating injury that made it so you can't go
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: back to work or you can't enjoy your hobbies. You
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: do deserve an advocate. You can find that at 801-355-5550.
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: Utah advocates.com. The advocates giving us our injury updates right
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: here on your home of the youths. And we were
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: just talking about it. We feel like this team's in
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: a really good spot, right? We feel good about the youths. Yeah,
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: for sure. Go youths. Go youths.
- 1:43:50Speaker 4: This is the Sean O'Connell show.
- 1:43:53Speaker 9: Your home of the best inside of your youths. Let's
- 1:43:56Speaker 9: get back to OC from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of
- 1:43:59Speaker 9: ESPN 700 at 92.
- 1:44:00Speaker 12: One FN.
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: Welcome to our number three on a Tuesday edition of
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: the Sean O'Connell show and welcome in Jeff Schwartz, longtime
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: NFL veteran, college football stud at the university of Oregon,
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: friend of the program, my friend, former co-host of mine
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: on PAC 12 radio, betting experts, all things, uh, and
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: coach of the Thunderbats who've had a very successful season.
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: If that matters to you, Jeff, welcome back to the show.
- 1:44:37Speaker 7: How are you?
- 1:44:38Speaker 6: Should matter to everybody. Um, Did you know McAfee is
- 1:44:42Speaker 6: this soft? Is that something that you knew beforehand or
- 1:44:45Speaker 6: just something you learned the last couple of days?
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: You get to say what you want to say.
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: We have to be a little more careful about our
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: messaging surrounding the university's apology letter to Pat McAfee. He's
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: been sensitive about people poking fun at him in the past.
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: I didn't think he would be sensitive about like three
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: 19-year-olds making fun of him. Not even really making fun
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: of him, just kind of like talking about him.
- 1:45:15Speaker 6: They asked them to do an impression of McAfee. One
- 1:45:17Speaker 6: person said he's going to say something corny, and then
- 1:45:20Speaker 6: I think he said the exact thing that he said
- 1:45:23Speaker 6: he was going to say. That was it. And supposedly
- 1:45:26Speaker 6: he's upset because Utah was the one who put the
- 1:45:29Speaker 6: video out.
- 1:45:30Speaker 7: So?
- 1:45:31Speaker 6: It feels like There are people in life that go
- 1:45:40Speaker 6: about wanting to be offended about stuff. And it feels
- 1:45:44Speaker 6: like in this instance, he wants to be offended by
- 1:45:47Speaker 6: something Utah did.
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: I'll tell you, as he was doing the show itself,
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: I was watching College Game Day. Of course, it's at
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: President's Circle, like five minutes from my house. I'm like, okay,
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: it's always great to see them there. The girl who
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: did the kick was awful. The whole thing was embarrassing.
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: It's a bad look for her to be like only
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: a million dollars. But I thought what we were getting,
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: because Pat is like, I mean, he literally does WWE stuff.
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: I thought what we were getting is kind of a
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: deliberate heel turn where Pat was going to play up
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: that he's the BYU guy now. Ryan Smith, BYU alum,
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: owner of the Jazz and the Mammoth. He's like Pat's
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: close friend. I thought he was playing up that, okay,
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: I'm the BYU guy. And I don't like these Utah kids.
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: I thought that's what was going on. I thought it
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: was being like, you know, kind of a tongue in cheek.
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: Let's have a little bit of fun with this. And then,
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: you know, like a, like a manufactured fake beef, which
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: I love. Cause I'm like, okay, cool. College game day
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: is going to have a relationship with Utah that everyone
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: can lean into and have fun with. And then he
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: went on a show and was like, I felt threatened
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: and all that stuff. And I was like, Whoa, But
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: I still was like, okay, let's make this a beef.
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: Let's make it a thing. And unfortunately, I was wrong.
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: The university doesn't feel like they can do that. They
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: need to bend the knee to ESPN and to Pat
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: by extension and all that stuff in order to maintain
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: a copacetic relationship there. I was hopeful that this was
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: going to be kind of like a theatrical feud, and
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: it wasn't.
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: It was him being genuinely bothered.
- 1:47:28Speaker 6: I just think that you have to have, of your
- 1:47:31Speaker 6: internet personality, you have to be able to pick your battles, right?
- 1:47:36Speaker 6: And there are certain times when you should legitimately, you know,
- 1:47:41Speaker 6: stand up for yourself and, you know, and that. This
- 1:47:45Speaker 6: is not one of them. Like, this is not the
- 1:47:48Speaker 6: time to pick your battles. Or it's not the time
- 1:47:51Speaker 6: to pick this battle. And I know people have sent
- 1:47:54Speaker 6: me a tweet that someone posted tweeted in September that, like,
- 1:47:59Speaker 6: they hope, you know, Pat McAfee gets Charlie Kirk, which
- 1:48:02Speaker 6: is absolutely terrible, right? Terrible thing to wish on anybody.
- 1:48:06Speaker 6: But it's also not a University of Utah thing. Like,
- 1:48:09Speaker 6: that's not a... That's not... What does that do with Utah?
- 1:48:13Speaker 6: And putting Utah in that same conversation to me felt, like,
- 1:48:16Speaker 6: really wrong. And I thought that... part was even extra, right? Like, okay,
- 1:48:21Speaker 6: be upset that they put the video out, whatevs. But
- 1:48:24Speaker 6: like evoking that assassination and putting it, and somehow like
- 1:48:28Speaker 6: attaching that to Utah felt like really uncalled for. And like, Again,
- 1:48:35Speaker 6: mean things are said about us on the internet all
- 1:48:36Speaker 6: the time. I get one message probably a month, something
- 1:48:39Speaker 6: about being Jewish in my DMs. I just delete it.
- 1:48:42Speaker 6: I don't call the police. I feel threatened. It's a
- 1:48:45Speaker 6: random people on the internet, man. What are we doing?
- 1:48:48Speaker 6: For someone on the internet, as much as he obviously is,
- 1:48:50Speaker 6: I just felt like he handled it really poorly, man.
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: Is there any validity to my theory that part of
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: his thin-skinned nature is because he was a punter? And
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: even if you make it to the highest, highest level
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: as a punter or as a kicker, right? Everyone just
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: like automatically respects NFL players because there's this public acknowledgement
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: that in order to make a living in football, you
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: have to be some freak of nature human being.
- 1:49:19Speaker 5: Sure.
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: But we don't apply that to the kickers and the punters,
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: and they don't get that kind of respect. And I
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: imagine I would be sensitive about that. Maybe. Maybe.
- 1:49:30Speaker 6: But I think that over time, that should wane because
- 1:49:35Speaker 6: of the success you've had outside of football, right?
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: Agreed, agreed.
- 1:49:38Speaker 6: Like, there are times when I think I've been sensitive
- 1:49:43Speaker 6: or embarrassed about things, and I'm like, well, who cares?
- 1:49:46Speaker 6: Why do I care what people think? I am who
- 1:49:49Speaker 6: I am. Like, what is it? Why do I care
- 1:49:51Speaker 6: what people think about me? Like, you get to a
- 1:49:52Speaker 6: point where it's just like, who cares what random people
- 1:49:55Speaker 6: on the internet say to you? And here's the thing
- 1:49:56Speaker 6: about it, too, and this is what I tell all
- 1:49:58Speaker 6: the time to people, like, no one acts like this
- 1:50:00Speaker 6: in real life, right? And I imagine that people in
- 1:50:02Speaker 6: real life are super nice to McAfee, like all the time.
- 1:50:06Speaker 6: And to act like the internet, right? In whatever form
- 1:50:10Speaker 6: it is, like represents the people that you see all
- 1:50:13Speaker 6: the time to me, like is wrong. Cause that's not,
- 1:50:16Speaker 6: I promise you, that's not the way people treat him
- 1:50:18Speaker 6: in real life, Sean. They probably treat him like with
- 1:50:21Speaker 6: the respect that he thinks he deserves and with the
- 1:50:23Speaker 6: stardom that he has earned. And so the idea that like, that, that,
- 1:50:30Speaker 6: you're treating the internet as real life to me is
- 1:50:33Speaker 6: always the wrong way to look at it.
- 1:50:34Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:50:35Speaker 6: Again, I get zero things in real life that come
- 1:50:37Speaker 6: anything close to what I hear or get told about
- 1:50:39Speaker 6: on the internet from people that don't like me.
- 1:50:41Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:50:41Speaker 6: Most people in fact go, Hey man, can I have
- 1:50:43Speaker 6: a selfie? And even people, even people on me every
- 1:50:45Speaker 6: now and then, every now and then was like, Matt,
- 1:50:46Speaker 6: can I just like, I don't really like you on
- 1:50:48Speaker 6: the internet, but you seem cool. Can I get your autograph? Like,
- 1:50:50Speaker 6: you know, like whatever, it's just not real life. And, and,
- 1:50:53Speaker 6: and treating it as such is, to me is for
- 1:50:57Speaker 6: someone who's always online and as a public person who,
- 1:51:00Speaker 6: who again, probably gets a lot of love in real
- 1:51:03Speaker 6: life is an odd way to approach the internet, man.
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: The whole thing ends up being really odd. And I mean, the,
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: the analogy I made this morning was sometimes you get
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: in an argument with your spouse and you know that
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: you really didn't do anything wrong, but you apologize anyway,
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: just to make the argument go away.
- 1:51:24Speaker 6: So every argument with my spouse?
- 1:51:26Speaker 2: It's better to be happy than to be right. And,
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: you know, you can.
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: Only be one.
- 1:51:31Speaker 6: Sometimes you want to be right.
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: Yes, I always want to be right.
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: And so, like, my immature standpoint on this is, no,
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: die on this hill, fight this battle. But the university
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: takes the path they took. They issue an apology. We'll
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: see if anything comes of it ever. I don't think
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: it will, but end of story. Let's talk about the
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: Houston versus Utah game.
- 1:51:51Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: I made sure to text you when we were discussing
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: the blitz that created the fumble that salted the game
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: away for the University of Utah. You know, we don't
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: have– I still haven't seen the all-22 angle on it.
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: I was sitting at the all-22 angle, but I didn't
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: take my phone out and film. And I was like, okay,
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: I don't think that that offensive– that left side of
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: the Houston offensive line can be right here.
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: In that situation.
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: I think that's why the blitz is designed the way
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: it's designed, but I wanted to talk to someone who's
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: a lot better at the advanced blocking concepts than I am.
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: So I asked you and I'll let you explain for
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: the listeners so that I'm not saying anything wrong, why
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: that works so well for Utah.
- 1:52:33Speaker 6: Do you want all 22 of it? I can send
- 1:52:35Speaker 6: it to you. Um, so, okay. So basically what, what
- 1:52:40Speaker 6: happened is that's like a will free safety pressure, right?
- 1:52:42Speaker 6: So you're bringing two guys week, right? You're bringing the
- 1:52:45Speaker 6: will linebacker essentially, uh, Um, or in this case, it
- 1:52:48Speaker 6: might've been like Sam strong safety. Cause I think you
- 1:52:50Speaker 6: were coming from the, the, the, the field, but beyond
- 1:52:54Speaker 6: that point, um, is that, uh, essentially Utah had ID,
- 1:52:59Speaker 6: excuse me, Houston ID.
- 1:53:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:53:02Speaker 6: It was from the front side. So basically it was
- 1:53:03Speaker 6: like Sam strong safety is that they, they, the way
- 1:53:08Speaker 6: Houston did it was they ID the five guys up
- 1:53:10Speaker 6: on the line of scrimmage as their five guys, they're
- 1:53:13Speaker 6: going to block, right. The final of its alignment. And then,
- 1:53:17Speaker 6: you already had a guy sort of on the right
- 1:53:19Speaker 6: side that was off the ball. That should have been
- 1:53:21Speaker 6: indicated to the quarterback that that guy was dropping in coverage.
- 1:53:23Speaker 6: He's not really on the ball. And so you have
- 1:53:26Speaker 6: those five guys to block, right? Five for five. And
- 1:53:28Speaker 6: the running back has the first guy to come of
- 1:53:31Speaker 6: the second-level defenders. Well, you had two come in the
- 1:53:34Speaker 6: second level, right? So he took the first one, which
- 1:53:37Speaker 6: was the Mike or the Sam, however you want to
- 1:53:38Speaker 6: ID it. Maybe it was Mike-Sam. I'm just using words here.
- 1:53:43Speaker 6: So that left the safety... essentially freeing no one to
- 1:53:46Speaker 6: block him. The way you would do this is you would,
- 1:53:49Speaker 6: if you wanted to block it correctly, you would tell
- 1:53:51Speaker 6: the line to slide to the left because you would
- 1:53:53Speaker 6: disregard the guy standing up over the right tackle who's
- 1:53:56Speaker 6: very clearly going to drop. Now, that's obviously a hindsight,
- 1:53:58Speaker 6: but you could pick it up. You have Utah rushes six,
- 1:54:03Speaker 6: and Houston has six blockers.
- 1:54:04Speaker 10: Actually, rush five.
- 1:54:05Speaker 6: They dropped two out. So they have enough blockers. You
- 1:54:07Speaker 6: just have to ID this correctly for the quarterback.
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: So it's on Connor Wegman to either get the ball
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: out before he's hit or to make sure the protection
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: goes the right way.
- 1:54:18Speaker 6: Correct. Okay.
- 1:54:20Speaker 2: It was a thing of beauty, though, because it didn't happen.
- 1:54:22Speaker 6: It's a great pressure, yeah. I mean, it's tough in
- 1:54:24Speaker 6: college to pick this up, and it made gamblers upset
- 1:54:30Speaker 6: because you guys covered because of this. I'm sure you're
- 1:54:33Speaker 6: worried about that.
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: I'm a moron, and I took the over in this game.
- 1:54:38Speaker 8: So did I.
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: Because it was the two– It was the two highest
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: scoring offenses in the Big 12 Conference going at one another.
- 1:54:44Speaker 2: And it was, I think, what, 57, 57 and a half?
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:54:46Speaker 6: I mean, it's not why I did it per se.
- 1:54:49Speaker 6: I mean, Utah's red zone defense, Houston's red zone defense
- 1:54:53Speaker 6: is atrocious. And I just figured that he has to
- 1:54:54Speaker 6: move the ball. But it just didn't, points didn't happen.
- 1:54:57Speaker 6: That's what happens sometimes, you know, just didn't score.
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: Did you see the other favorite highlight from Utah's film
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: in this game in the bull rush sack by number 90,
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: Jai Moy, the short de-tackle?
- 1:55:09Speaker 6: I did not see it. Should I look that up?
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: You should look it up because there's a guy like
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: your size who, uh, the kid, the Utah D tackle
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: doesn't actually touch the quarterback. He just bull rushes the
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: guard back into the quarterback.
- 1:55:22Speaker 6: One of those embarrassing.
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:55:24Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: Throws him, uses, uses him as a weapon. Uh, and
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: you know, of course that never happened to Jeff Schwartz.
- 1:55:30Speaker 6: Uh, yeah, I did not get beat that way. I
- 1:55:32Speaker 6: haven't beat before, believe it or not. I know it's
- 1:55:34Speaker 6: shocking to learn that, but it has happened in the past. Um,
- 1:55:38Speaker 6: It was a good win for you guys and your
- 1:55:40Speaker 6: rival loss. I know people on the station do root
- 1:55:42Speaker 6: for BYU as well, but that was a good weekend
- 1:55:45Speaker 6: for Utah football. A buddy of my podcast, Bear Betts,
- 1:55:48Speaker 6: last week got a lot of heat from BYU fans.
- 1:55:51Speaker 6: He said that, you know, my power rankings, I don't
- 1:55:52Speaker 6: have BYU in the top 10. I just, I don't.
- 1:55:56Speaker 6: BYU fans, you can imagine, we're not happy about that.
- 1:55:58Speaker 6: And they killed him. And he had a Saturday night
- 1:56:01Speaker 6: on the internet that was, made me jealous. Just like
- 1:56:05Speaker 6: AI graphics of like BYU fans, like trash talking him
- 1:56:09Speaker 6: and he put a gravestone out there. What a night
- 1:56:11Speaker 6: for him.
- 1:56:13Speaker 2: Just life on the internet.
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: So BYU loses to UCF and the end of game
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: scenario in that was as disgusting and weird and poorly
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: officiated as anything I've seen.
- 1:56:28Speaker 6: Is there a question?
- 1:56:29Speaker 2: I thought you were going to start talking.
- 1:56:31Speaker 6: Basically, I'm tired of it. Is that what we're talking about?
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: I'm tired of the.
- 1:56:38Speaker 6: Officiating errors that are procedural, right? Like, again, I tell
- 1:56:43Speaker 6: this all the time, like, don't, you want to hold it, whatever, man,
- 1:56:46Speaker 6: you're going to miss a hold, you're going to miss
- 1:56:47Speaker 6: a pass interference. But we have enough technology and people
- 1:56:53Speaker 6: with the know-how and the rules experts to get it right, right? Like,
- 1:56:58Speaker 6: you have, stop the game, listen to the Big 12, like,
- 1:57:05Speaker 6: in your earpiece, and get it right, man.
- 1:57:07Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:57:09Speaker 6: Like just get it right.
- 1:57:10Speaker 11: Right.
- 1:57:10Speaker 6: I mean, I don't understand Sean, get it right.
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: And instead they do this like weird runoff thing. Uh,
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: they end the game prematurely, which is the second time
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: this has happened in a BYU game this year. And
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: then the, it felt like the roughing the kicker penalty
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: was a makeup call.
- 1:57:27Speaker 6: It was, I don't know if I believe in makeup calls,
- 1:57:29Speaker 6: but I think that, that sometimes referees look for things to,
- 1:57:34Speaker 6: to call. And it felt like they were looking to
- 1:57:35Speaker 6: call that. I mean, that was so incidental, right? You get,
- 1:57:38Speaker 6: Basically got blown up. You blew it off with a
- 1:57:40Speaker 6: tackle and rolled over him on the kicker. That did
- 1:57:42Speaker 6: not feel like the spirit of what that rule is about.
- 1:57:46Speaker 6: I'm sort of big into the idea of the spirit
- 1:57:49Speaker 6: behind the rule. The spirit behind that rule is not
- 1:57:51Speaker 6: that penalty.
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: That's ridiculous. The letter of the law is broken on
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: every single play in football.
- 1:57:56Speaker 6: Correct.
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: Someone is being held on every play, but did the
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: holding impede your motion toward the play?
- 1:58:02Speaker 7: Correct.
- 1:58:03Speaker 2: And then you can call it. That's the spirit of
- 1:58:05Speaker 2: that rule.
- 1:58:06Speaker 6: Yes, and I just felt like that was not what
- 1:58:08Speaker 6: that was about. But I think to the broader point, like,
- 1:58:11Speaker 6: I think BYU is good, not great. I think a
- 1:58:14Speaker 6: lot of teams are good, not great this year, by
- 1:58:15Speaker 6: the way. And we have seen this spot play out
- 1:58:19Speaker 6: all season, Sean. This is not, they're not the first
- 1:58:21Speaker 6: team to lose in this spot. You win a big
- 1:58:23Speaker 6: home game, the next week you come out and lose
- 1:58:26Speaker 6: on the road. It's happened probably 10 times so far
- 1:58:28Speaker 6: this season.
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: Okay, so.
- 1:58:30Speaker 6: It's a tough spot. It's a tough spot, man.
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: So how does Utah avoid that same pitfall? Because they
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: just got a big win at home against Houston. First
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: ranked win. First real test of the season. College game
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: day was here. Distraction and controversy that I don't think
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: affects the team at all, honestly. But now you got
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: to go. And Cincinnati is also coming off their best
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: win of the year and feeling confident. Their defense overall
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: is pretty bad. But how does Utah avoid falling into
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: the same trap that just caught BYU?
- 1:59:00Speaker 6: Well, that's the thing. Cincinnati's also coming off a big win.
- 1:59:02Speaker 6: Then they beat Texas Tech. And so I think you
- 1:59:05Speaker 6: feel pretty good about, like, just, you know, they're in
- 1:59:09Speaker 6: the same boat you guys are, right? They're obviously at
- 1:59:11Speaker 6: home and you're not, but they're off a big win
- 1:59:13Speaker 6: as well. I think that's valid to sort of, you know,
- 1:59:19Speaker 6: the more film we're getting on Utah offense, the less
- 1:59:21Speaker 6: points there are being scorched on. And I think I've
- 1:59:24Speaker 6: got to evaluate why that is and how, you know,
- 1:59:26Speaker 6: if you get to a road game like this and,
- 1:59:28Speaker 6: You have a couple turnovers. Your defense gives up a
- 1:59:31Speaker 6: score here and there. Is our offense able to ramp
- 1:59:33Speaker 6: back up to what it was the first couple? This
- 1:59:36Speaker 6: is sort of my concern at all times. With a
- 1:59:39Speaker 6: little bit of the gadget stuff, eventually teams figure that out.
- 1:59:43Speaker 6: You've only won so many plays out of those gadget formations, right?
- 1:59:45Speaker 6: What do you have on offense when it's not gadget
- 1:59:49Speaker 6: time and when you can't do the two quarterbacks and
- 1:59:53Speaker 6: you can't do some fun, funky things because first down
- 1:59:55Speaker 6: hasn't been as good so now you're in long you know,
- 1:59:58Speaker 6: longer distances and you have to figure out real offense
- 2:00:01Speaker 6: at times. So I think it's worth sort of figuring
- 2:00:03Speaker 6: out maybe for Utah, like is the offense sort of
- 2:00:06Speaker 6: stalled out a little bit, how they get some points
- 2:00:08Speaker 6: in this game. But today I don't think it's very good,
- 2:00:11Speaker 6: even though they beat Texas Tech.
- 2:00:13Speaker 1: The last two games, they've gone away from the two
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: quarterback thing. Pretty like, I think Bird Ficklin got one
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: touch in the game against Houston. So is that other
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: teams have figured out how to stop it or them
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: just saying that's a gimmick and you don't need to
- 2:00:28Speaker 1: use it?
- 2:00:29Speaker 6: I imagine it's probably a little bit of both. I
- 2:00:31Speaker 6: think that, you know, there's, again, there's always going to
- 2:00:33Speaker 6: be a place you can run out of that, right, Sean?
- 2:00:35Speaker 6: And you're basically taking, you're basically deciding that one player
- 2:00:40Speaker 6: often doesn't matter, right? Like you're just, you're using up
- 2:00:43Speaker 6: an offensive position for a guy that can only do
- 2:00:46Speaker 6: a certain number of things in the snap. Like how,
- 2:00:48Speaker 6: it eventually becomes easy to defend, right? If I know
- 2:00:50Speaker 6: you're only going to do If you're that player, right,
- 2:00:53Speaker 6: you're either going to run the ball on some sort
- 2:00:57Speaker 6: of option-type play, right, or you're going to pass the
- 2:01:00Speaker 6: ball going to your left. It feels like a pretty–
- 2:01:05Speaker 6: if I'm a defense, if I know what you're doing,
- 2:01:07Speaker 6: the two things you can do, it probably bodes pretty
- 2:01:09Speaker 6: well for my ability to stop it.
- 2:01:10Speaker 1: I guess I'm an idiot because I view it the
- 2:01:12Speaker 1: other way because I'm like, okay, he can– take the
- 2:01:17Speaker 1: snap and just play quarterback directly. And I guess then you're,
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: you're wasting Devin for like, cause that you're probably not
- 2:01:24Speaker 1: going to throw it to him.
- 2:01:25Speaker 2: Although they have, right. You can have him be a receiver.
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: They've done that with, with bird Ficklin after making it
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: look like he was going to play quarterback. But I
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: think maybe there's a decision that we have good enough receivers.
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: Let's not make this quarterback be a receiver. So I
- 2:01:39Speaker 1: guess it does come down to just being an option
- 2:01:41Speaker 1: run nine times out of 10.
- 2:01:43Speaker 6: Correct. And I think, again, there's nothing, wrong with with
- 2:01:46Speaker 6: some of those plays but that's why these never last
- 2:01:48Speaker 6: a whole season because you just teams you can figure
- 2:01:51Speaker 6: it out just get figured out so um yeah i
- 2:01:54Speaker 6: think utah's you know learning to transition to something else
- 2:01:57Speaker 6: and we'll see what it looks like this week but
- 2:01:59Speaker 6: now uh sets up uh you know pretty pretty uh
- 2:02:02Speaker 6: comfortable place for utah to be a big 10 champion
- 2:02:04Speaker 6: so uh a big big 12 champion right obviously you'll
- 2:02:07Speaker 6: have an opportunity to to play that game most likely
- 2:02:09Speaker 6: if you if you beat byu or byu loses another
- 2:02:12Speaker 6: game here down the stretch how do you feel about
- 2:02:14Speaker 6: the the the When I saw the original announcement for
- 2:02:19Speaker 6: the Holy War, I thought it was 10 p.m. Eastern.
- 2:02:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's 10 a.m. Mountain Time, noon Eastern.
- 2:02:25Speaker 6: With game day or no game day?
- 2:02:28Speaker 2: Everyone thinks that game day is going to Notre Dame Miami.
- 2:02:31Speaker 7: Right.
- 2:02:31Speaker 6: So why are they playing your game so early then?
- 2:02:34Speaker 2: So here's where it gets difficult.
- 2:02:37Speaker 5: All right.
- 2:02:38Speaker 1: Now, let me throw out the disclaimer. The school and
- 2:02:42Speaker 1: the conference do not get to make the decision. The
- 2:02:44Speaker 1: networks make the decision by themselves. However, there's been angst
- 2:02:49Speaker 1: expressed by the Big 12 Conference and by the University
- 2:02:52Speaker 1: of Utah that, hey, this is five night games. The
- 2:02:58Speaker 1: country's not watching us. And that's true. The Houston-Utah game
- 2:03:03Speaker 1: was a great game. It was a top 15 game.
- 2:03:06Speaker 1: Nobody on the East Coast watched it because it was
- 2:03:09Speaker 1: at 10.30 p.m. It kicked off at 1030 Eastern, right?
- 2:03:12Speaker 1: So both the conference and the university have expressed like, Hey,
- 2:03:16Speaker 1: can we spread these things out a little bit more?
- 2:03:17Speaker 1: Can we not have every one of our games, especially
- 2:03:20Speaker 1: the important ones as these night games. And then the
- 2:03:24Speaker 1: alternative window for the Holy war, which will be a
- 2:03:26Speaker 1: top 10 matchup, a rivalry game, top 10 rivalry game
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: never happened in the history of this particular rivalry. The
- 2:03:33Speaker 1: national window where everyone can watch that is either the,
- 2:03:38Speaker 1: 530 Eastern kickoff time, and that's where Notre Dame Miami is,
- 2:03:42Speaker 1: or you can put it in the morning. And so
- 2:03:47Speaker 1: they chose to put it in the morning. And I'm
- 2:03:50Speaker 1: torn on it because I guess you want, from a
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: conference perspective, you want Utah BYU to be watched by
- 2:03:57Speaker 1: Jeff Schwartz in North Carolina. But also, Jeff Schwartz in
- 2:04:00Speaker 1: North Carolina doesn't have to care about this game. This
- 2:04:02Speaker 1: game is ours, man. Maximize it for the locals. But
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: we've been doing that for 30 years. I don't know.
- 2:04:08Speaker 2: It feels like it's a lose-lose.
- 2:04:09Speaker 6: Because Jeff Schwartz in Carolina definitely did not stay awake
- 2:04:12Speaker 6: for the game Saturday night. Of course. But to be fair,
- 2:04:15Speaker 6: I didn't step for Oregon and Nebraska either. So, look,
- 2:04:17Speaker 6: I didn't miss very much on that. Man, oh, buddy.
- 2:04:21Speaker 6: That's not good, Eugene.
- 2:04:24Speaker 2: We'll get to that here in a second.
- 2:04:25Speaker 1: But 10 a.m., mountain time kick.
- 2:04:29Speaker 6: You wake up later than that most days. How are
- 2:04:31Speaker 6: you going to be able to get to the game?
- 2:04:32Speaker 1: Don't put that evil on me, all right? I have
- 2:04:35Speaker 1: young children. If I get to sleep in until 7 a.m.,
- 2:04:38Speaker 1: I'm grateful.
- 2:04:39Speaker 6: I heard someone, a buddy of my life told me
- 2:04:42Speaker 6: he took his kid to play travel ball in Tennessee,
- 2:04:44Speaker 6: and they woke up Monday. He's like, I just woke
- 2:04:46Speaker 6: up at 8.30.
- 2:04:46Speaker 8: I go, 8.30?
- 2:04:47Speaker 6: If I wake up at 7.10... On a Sunday, I
- 2:04:53Speaker 6: feel like I've slept in half the day.
- 2:04:55Speaker 1: Yes, it feels, you're just like, oh my gosh, I
- 2:04:59Speaker 1: feel wonderful about this. And now that it's getting dark early,
- 2:05:03Speaker 1: it's just the worst because you wake up and it's
- 2:05:06Speaker 1: dark and you're like, oh man, why can't I sleep longer?
- 2:05:08Speaker 6: Has it started snowing yet?
- 2:05:12Speaker 2: Just on the top of the mountains.
- 2:05:14Speaker 6: Oh, that sounds miserable.
- 2:05:15Speaker 2: Well, it's been nice here. We need the water, Jeff.
- 2:05:20Speaker 6: You're on drought?
- 2:05:22Speaker 1: Yeah, we had one of the driest winters on record
- 2:05:24Speaker 1: last week.
- 2:05:24Speaker 6: You know what? This is not the program for my
- 2:05:27Speaker 6: discussion on how the climate's changed a lot in the
- 2:05:28Speaker 6: last two years. We'll do that another time.
- 2:05:30Speaker 1: Okay. The coaching carousel is spinning already, including at your
- 2:05:36Speaker 1: alma mater. Oregon is moving on, and they're going to
- 2:05:38Speaker 1: hire a new offensive coordinator. Baylor has a head coaching vacancy.
- 2:05:42Speaker 1: NC State has a head coaching vacancy. Maryland?
- 2:05:46Speaker 7: Maryland.
- 2:05:47Speaker 2: Maryland.
- 2:05:48Speaker 1: Yeah, we're keeping a close eye, especially on the Baylor
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: one because it's a conference opponent and likely candidates. Apparently,
- 2:05:54Speaker 1: Lincoln Riley's name is in that conversation. I don't believe
- 2:05:57Speaker 1: that one. Maybe Dan Mullen from UNLV. Some of the
- 2:06:01Speaker 1: usual suspects are being mentioned, but how big a domino
- 2:06:05Speaker 1: is Baylor to fall? Certainly not the biggest one we're
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: going to get this offseason, but it's a big job.
- 2:06:11Speaker 6: I heard Lincoln Riley's getting a lifetime contract from USC, though.
- 2:06:14Speaker 6: I heard that might work out for him, so I
- 2:06:16Speaker 6: hope he doesn't leave USC. What if they got a
- 2:06:19Speaker 6: good coach? What if they got Jason Eck and they
- 2:06:22Speaker 6: became physical again? Can you imagine that?
- 2:06:24Speaker 2: What if Kalani Satake takes the USC job?
- 2:06:27Speaker 6: I don't think he's leaving BYU now. Why would he leave?
- 2:06:30Speaker 6: He had a chance to go last year and take
- 2:06:32Speaker 6: all these jobs. Do you really think he'd leave for USC?
- 2:06:34Speaker 1: Well, I don't think so because I think BYU figured
- 2:06:37Speaker 1: out the feud. I think that he was beefing with
- 2:06:41Speaker 1: the athletic director and they took that off his plate.
- 2:06:45Speaker 1: And he's not the kind of guy who's going to
- 2:06:47Speaker 1: leave his alma mater in a place, you know, he's
- 2:06:50Speaker 1: a member of the faith, obviously. And it means a
- 2:06:52Speaker 1: lot to him. I don't think he's going to leave
- 2:06:54Speaker 1: to chase money. So I think that, I think that
- 2:06:58Speaker 1: USC would have to back up a Brinks truck or
- 2:07:00Speaker 1: BYU would have to screw up again. And I don't
- 2:07:02Speaker 1: think they're gonna.
- 2:07:03Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 2:07:04Speaker 6: So I don't expect that to be a thing for USC.
- 2:07:06Speaker 6: It's going to be an interesting cycle, man. There's not
- 2:07:09Speaker 6: a lot of big names that are, you think like
- 2:07:13Speaker 6: surefire head coaches, right? Like, The Indiana coordinators probably are
- 2:07:17Speaker 6: going to get a look, right, if they want, but
- 2:07:19Speaker 6: they don't have to. They don't have to go anywhere.
- 2:07:22Speaker 6: You'll get a message from Jason Eck from New Mexico
- 2:07:24Speaker 6: probably going somewhere. You have to think that maybe Charles
- 2:07:28Speaker 6: Huff of Memphis is going after one year at Memphis,
- 2:07:30Speaker 6: going somewhere, a bigger job. There's not a lot of
- 2:07:32Speaker 6: big time. There's some retreads. I think Brian Kelly might
- 2:07:35Speaker 6: end up going somewhere. There's some retread names. There's a
- 2:07:38Speaker 6: coordinator or two we don't really see coming, but it
- 2:07:41Speaker 6: doesn't feel like a cycle right now that we have
- 2:07:43Speaker 6: a lot of known commodities for.
- 2:07:46Speaker 2: If USC has a vacancy, will they call Bob Chesney?
- 2:07:50Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't think he'd take it, though.
- 2:07:54Speaker 7: Why?
- 2:07:56Speaker 6: Why would he take it? I mean, he's doing fine
- 2:07:59Speaker 6: at UCLA. I don't think he'll be at UCLA or
- 2:08:00Speaker 6: USC much longer, but I don't think he'll take the
- 2:08:02Speaker 6: USC job. USC's probably going to call Urban Meyer first.
- 2:08:06Speaker 6: I imagine he's going to say no. And then they're
- 2:08:09Speaker 6: going to try to find the biggest name they can
- 2:08:11Speaker 6: find next.
- 2:08:13Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll see. When the carousel gets spinning, it always
- 2:08:17Speaker 1: intrigues me, and Shout out Dave Aranda. He was awesome
- 2:08:20Speaker 1: when he was a coordinator at Utah State. So I
- 2:08:22Speaker 1: hope it works out for him. The Niners finally lost
- 2:08:27Speaker 1: in the NFL. Should I be worried?
- 2:08:30Speaker 6: No. It's so funny. The fans of teams after one NFL,
- 2:08:34Speaker 6: six and one, Chiefs are five and one. It's like
- 2:08:36Speaker 6: the world's over. The injury thing is real, though, for
- 2:08:39Speaker 6: the Niners. I mean, shoot, you guys have nobody healthy, man.
- 2:08:41Speaker 6: But no, it's the NFL, man. It's one weekend.
- 2:08:46Speaker 1: How much are you watching this Brewers-Rays World Series?
- 2:08:50Speaker 2: Jeff, for people who don't know, Jeff is a big
- 2:08:52Speaker 2: baseball guy.
- 2:08:54Speaker 6: I've watched a little bit. It's been during football. It
- 2:08:56Speaker 6: was on during my football last night. I'll watch more
- 2:09:00Speaker 6: tonight because it's obviously a clutching game. I am looking
- 2:09:03Speaker 6: forward to watching the WNBA at 1230 on Thursday afternoon.
- 2:09:06Speaker 2: We were just talking about that.
- 2:09:09Speaker 6: Dude, I watch WNBA. I mean, I bet on it.
- 2:09:12Speaker 6: It certainly helps, but... A, some of the games, like
- 2:09:16Speaker 6: last night's game was just atrocious. It was so poorly played.
- 2:09:19Speaker 6: No one played, but whatever. It's just such poor leadership.
- 2:09:23Speaker 6: The idea that they didn't have a plan at all
- 2:09:28Speaker 6: for this is just so telling, right? Like no foresight. Like,
- 2:09:32Speaker 6: you know, people point out to other teams who are NBA, yeah,
- 2:09:34Speaker 6: they're tenants of those arenas. Atlanta doesn't play in this arena.
- 2:09:37Speaker 6: It's not their home arena. And they just had no idea.
- 2:09:42Speaker 6: They didn't think one day ahead at a time, right, Sean?
- 2:09:45Speaker 6: That's it. They didn't have any thoughts and plans for this.
- 2:09:48Speaker 6: And also, the other dumb thing about this thing is
- 2:09:49Speaker 6: that people are like, it'd be a good PR move
- 2:09:52Speaker 6: for the Hawks to give up their home game.
- 2:09:55Speaker 1: No, it's not.
- 2:09:56Speaker 6: Who cares? More Hawks tickets? Are they going to sell
- 2:10:00Speaker 6: more tickets because they gave up a home game for
- 2:10:02Speaker 6: the dream?
- 2:10:03Speaker 1: It's their arena. It's their schedule.
- 2:10:05Speaker 6: Why should they change? Some of the takes on this
- 2:10:08Speaker 6: are just horrendously bad. The Hawks owe it to them
- 2:10:14Speaker 6: to move their game and move their schedule around and
- 2:10:17Speaker 6: cancel their game because the WNBA didn't prepare to have
- 2:10:24Speaker 6: a game six in a proper location.
- 2:10:26Speaker 1: It's wild. Before I let you go, Quentin Nelson gets
- 2:10:30Speaker 1: traded to the Seahawks.
- 2:10:33Speaker 2: What do you think it is? I mean, he's an
- 2:10:35Speaker 2: absolute monster.
- 2:10:36Speaker 6: Still playing at a very high level. Interesting trade. Seahawks,
- 2:10:40Speaker 6: be aggressive, right? This little window they have right here.
- 2:10:43Speaker 6: Quinn Nelson will play left guard. I imagine Zabel might
- 2:10:46Speaker 6: move to center right guard, and they're just going for it. Look,
- 2:10:48Speaker 6: the run game has struggled this year without Kenneth Walker,
- 2:10:51Speaker 6: as we know, and they have some other injuries, right?
- 2:10:54Speaker 6: Price is hurt, beat up, but Charbonnet is out. So
- 2:10:57Speaker 6: I think Quinn Nelson does two things, right? One, it
- 2:10:59Speaker 6: makes your team just tougher. He's just a tough SOB, right?
- 2:11:01Speaker 6: But also, too, I'd imagine it just allows your run
- 2:11:04Speaker 6: game to be a little bit better until those guys
- 2:11:05Speaker 6: get back, you know? And so he was cheap. Third
- 2:11:08Speaker 6: round pick next year, like in a fifth or something
- 2:11:10Speaker 6: in the year after that, like this for an all
- 2:11:12Speaker 6: pro player like this, obviously he's on a contract year.
- 2:11:15Speaker 6: So I'm not sure the, the, the, the, the traits
- 2:11:18Speaker 6: in the five, they're going to sign him to a
- 2:11:19Speaker 6: long-term contract, but you just certainly can sign him to
- 2:11:22Speaker 6: a deal. And now you have a, you know, a
- 2:11:24Speaker 6: left guard, an all pro type player for a long time.
- 2:11:28Speaker 1: All right. Overtime again, as I usually am. So, Got
- 2:11:32Speaker 1: to let you go. Appreciate you giving us some time
- 2:11:34Speaker 1: this week. Take care, buddy.
- 2:11:36Speaker 6: Have a good week.
- 2:11:37Speaker 7: Bye.
- 2:11:37Speaker 1: That's Jeff Schwartz, betting insider, college football insider, NFL football
- 2:11:43Speaker 1: insider as well.
- 2:11:46Speaker 2: All right, some really bad news.
- 2:11:48Speaker 1: If you had high hopes for the Utah Jazz, especially
- 2:11:51Speaker 1: at the beginning of this NBA season.
- 2:11:53Speaker 2: I'll tell you what that is next.
- 2:11:55Speaker 1: It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:12:02Speaker 9: You're listening to The Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 2:12:06Speaker 9: the best youth football coverage.
- 2:12:08Speaker 4: Here's O.C.
- 2:12:08Speaker 9: From the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 2:12:17Speaker 1: We've got a $ 25 gift card to Zhao Asian Cafe
- 2:12:20Speaker 1: to give away next. Oh, sorry. Excuse me.
- 2:12:25Speaker 2: I lied to you. It's a free meal.
- 2:12:28Speaker 1: It's a free meal card, free meal voucher. I don't
- 2:12:33Speaker 1: know what the exact dollar amount for that would be,
- 2:12:35Speaker 1: but it's a free meal, people. We're giving that away
- 2:12:39Speaker 1: next with topical trivia. Maybe try ordering $ 50 worth of
- 2:12:45Speaker 1: food and saying, this is one meal, okay? No, don't
- 2:12:49Speaker 1: be greedy about it.
- 2:12:50Speaker 5: No, I believe it's like a bowl or some other
- 2:12:54Speaker 5: kind of entree.
- 2:12:54Speaker 1: A bowl of salads. They have the Asian tacos. They've
- 2:12:57Speaker 1: got a wonderful, delicious menu. A lot of it very,
- 2:13:00Speaker 1: very healthy food. So tell him OC sent you when
- 2:13:03Speaker 1: you win the gift card and you head down to
- 2:13:06Speaker 1: Zao Asian cafe.
- 2:13:07Speaker 2: We'll get to that here in a second.
- 2:13:09Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 2:13:10Speaker 1: I have bad news for all of you that thought
- 2:13:12Speaker 1: that the Utah jazz might actually make something of themselves
- 2:13:15Speaker 1: this year.
- 2:13:15Speaker 5: I feel like you're just talking to me. What, what,
- 2:13:18Speaker 5: why are you, why am I the target of your
- 2:13:20Speaker 5: ire right now? I'll see you don't McAfee this about you.
- 2:13:24Speaker 1: Okay. Fair enough.
- 2:13:28Speaker 2: Uh, it's really a bum deal.
- 2:13:30Speaker 1: Shams and others now reporting that Trey J as he's
- 2:13:34Speaker 1: affectionately referred to on this. He loves it. By the way,
- 2:13:37Speaker 1: he loves Trey J Jaron Jackson, jr. James ran it
- 2:13:40Speaker 1: by him and he was like, yeah, I'll take it.
- 2:13:43Speaker 1: Jaron Jackson jr. Is injured and out for six to
- 2:13:48Speaker 1: eight weeks. I haven't seen an update yet on that remark.
- 2:13:53Speaker 1: And in his wrist, he exited the first quarter of
- 2:13:55Speaker 1: the Utah jazz game last night, which coincidentally another loss.
- 2:13:59Speaker 2: Do a not good team in Memphis.
- 2:14:01Speaker 1: Yeah, they're 0-2 against Memphis so far. Guys, it's fine
- 2:14:06Speaker 1: if your best defensive player who's supposed to be your
- 2:14:09Speaker 1: best defensive big man is gone for this next game.
- 2:14:12Speaker 1: No big deal. It's just the Spurs. It's just Wemby
- 2:14:15Speaker 1: in town.
- 2:14:17Speaker 5: Which, by the way, regardless of what lineup the Jazz
- 2:14:22Speaker 5: trot out there, it is worth your time if you're
- 2:14:24Speaker 5: able to to see Wemby in person. I'll just put
- 2:14:27Speaker 5: that plug out there. If you had, especially if you
- 2:14:29Speaker 5: haven't seen him in person yet.
- 2:14:31Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:14:31Speaker 1: I mean, there are certain players that I only, I
- 2:14:35Speaker 1: think I only watched LeBron James in person like three
- 2:14:38Speaker 1: or four times. Cause he, he hardly ever played when
- 2:14:41Speaker 1: he was in Utah.
- 2:14:42Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:14:42Speaker 1: He would, he started skipping that trip.
- 2:14:44Speaker 5: Coincidentally, after he, he breaks his losing streak in Utah,
- 2:14:49Speaker 5: there was, it was like seven or eight games there.
- 2:14:52Speaker 5: I didn't want to say six or seven games. It
- 2:14:55Speaker 5: was somewhere in there. And then they, they break the
- 2:14:58Speaker 5: streak his first year with the, with LA. And then
- 2:15:01Speaker 5: he decides I'm never going to play here again.
- 2:15:03Speaker 1: Basically. It's like, I got to win. He stands it
- 2:15:05Speaker 1: go out on top.
- 2:15:07Speaker 2: I can appreciate that.
- 2:15:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:15:09Speaker 1: But yeah, really bad news for the Utah jazz as
- 2:15:12Speaker 1: Jaron Jackson jr.
- 2:15:14Speaker 2: We'll be out for six to eight weeks.
- 2:15:16Speaker 1: And this was, this was unfortunately, you know, I've referred
- 2:15:20Speaker 1: to it with Gordy Chiesa who joined us on the
- 2:15:22Speaker 1: program today. was one of the things that I asked
- 2:15:25Speaker 1: about this team. Yes. Your personnel is better. Your roster
- 2:15:28Speaker 1: is better than it was last year. I think significantly.
- 2:15:31Speaker 1: So we still will see what the absence of somebody
- 2:15:34Speaker 1: like Walker Kessler does long-term for the jazz, but we
- 2:15:37Speaker 1: saw what it does for this team short-term last year
- 2:15:40Speaker 1: because he was injured as well. So Larry marketing, Jaron Jackson, jr. Keontae,
- 2:15:46Speaker 1: George ace Bailey, Darren Peterson. These are all, these are
- 2:15:51Speaker 1: all better pieces. but they have to be available. And
- 2:15:56Speaker 1: you've spent now four seasons where you're mixing and matching.
- 2:16:00Speaker 1: You're not having available consistency. You're just, you're kind of
- 2:16:05Speaker 1: hoping for the best. You start this season without Nurk
- 2:16:09Speaker 1: and now you're without Jaron Jackson jr. As well for
- 2:16:12Speaker 1: a protracted, that's a significant amount of time. When we
- 2:16:15Speaker 1: were talking with Gordy, he said, yeah, once you get
- 2:16:18Speaker 1: into you know, mid December ish, 20 games in, that's
- 2:16:22Speaker 1: when you're really starting to figure things out, which means
- 2:16:24Speaker 1: that this jazz team is going to spend those first
- 2:16:26Speaker 1: 20 games.
- 2:16:27Speaker 2: Well, the next 16 out.
- 2:16:30Speaker 1: Of those first 20 games, plus without a guy who's
- 2:16:33Speaker 1: supposed to be probably your second or third best player.
- 2:16:37Speaker 1: And he's an all-star. He's a defensive player of the year.
- 2:16:39Speaker 1: He is the tone setter and you are devoid of
- 2:16:44Speaker 1: big men right now.
- 2:16:45Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:16:46Speaker 5: And a chunk of that, Next 16 games, not all
- 2:16:50Speaker 5: of the not all of the next six to eight weeks, obviously,
- 2:16:54Speaker 5: but a good chunk of that almost at least half
- 2:16:57Speaker 5: of that without another one of your starters guy who
- 2:17:00Speaker 5: is going to be your starting center and use of Nurkic.
- 2:17:02Speaker 5: And so that's two starters down for at least the
- 2:17:06Speaker 5: next three weeks.
- 2:17:06Speaker 1: This is TBT TBT on.
- 2:17:13Speaker 2: Lowry marketing.
- 2:17:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:17:14Speaker 1: We don't know.
- 2:17:15Speaker 5: We have not received an update on that. I think
- 2:17:17Speaker 5: it's good news that Shams has already, a guy like
- 2:17:20Speaker 5: Shams already, uh, tweeted that, um, Trey J is out
- 2:17:25Speaker 5: to six weeks and we haven't heard anything about Lowry.
- 2:17:27Speaker 5: That means maybe he doesn't play tomorrow night against San
- 2:17:30Speaker 5: Antonio the next game, but you hope that that no
- 2:17:34Speaker 5: news is good news thing works in your favor here.
- 2:17:37Speaker 5: If you're the jazz and you're, you're, he's only out
- 2:17:40Speaker 5: for a couple of games and not at least six
- 2:17:42Speaker 5: to eight weeks.
- 2:17:43Speaker 1: Like, uh, Like Trey J., who loves the nickname. I
- 2:17:47Speaker 1: was skeptical of whether or not you could just... assume, like,
- 2:17:51Speaker 1: all right, now that you're supposed to play the 70
- 2:17:54Speaker 1: games or so, you're going to be able to play
- 2:17:56Speaker 1: 70 games or so. Lowry Markkinen has not played more
- 2:17:59Speaker 1: than 66 games since coming to Utah. That's his cap
- 2:18:04Speaker 1: so far. You want that, as many as that or
- 2:18:08Speaker 1: more from him. Please. Because, again, I don't expect greatness
- 2:18:14Speaker 1: from the team right now. I need a product, a
- 2:18:18Speaker 1: basketball product that is worth consuming, that is worth talking about,
- 2:18:22Speaker 1: a basketball product that makes sense for people to stay
- 2:18:25Speaker 1: interested in. And you know what? If I'm a jazz
- 2:18:28Speaker 1: fan and I see this, if I'm a season ticket holder,
- 2:18:31Speaker 1: I'm calling and being like, is there any way that
- 2:18:34Speaker 1: I can transfer this over to the Utah Mammoth, who,
- 2:18:37Speaker 1: by the way, are in action tonight?
- 2:18:39Speaker 5: Yeah, Minnesota Wild. It's a good Wild team. Going to
- 2:18:43Speaker 5: get wild at the Delta Center. Yeah, this is about
- 2:18:49Speaker 5: the worst news that the Jazz could get right now, especially, again,
- 2:18:54Speaker 5: given that they don't have their starting center, who is
- 2:18:56Speaker 5: only their starting center because they ended up having to
- 2:18:59Speaker 5: trade the guy that they wanted to be their starting center.
- 2:19:01Speaker 5: So you are really thin with your big men. What
- 2:19:04Speaker 5: they'll probably do, in the short term, assuming that Lowry
- 2:19:08Speaker 5: Markkinen doesn't miss more than a game or two here,
- 2:19:12Speaker 5: maybe a week, whatever, with this wrist injury, is they probably,
- 2:19:17Speaker 5: they've started Ace at least one game this year already.
- 2:19:20Speaker 5: They probably have Ace be one of your forwards and,
- 2:19:24Speaker 5: you know, knock on wood, Lowry's wrist injury isn't serious.
- 2:19:28Speaker 1: He's your other forward.
- 2:19:30Speaker 5: And then when they haven't started Ace, it's been Jackson
- 2:19:33Speaker 5: Hayes at center. So not going to be that different
- 2:19:38Speaker 5: having ACE as your third forward, there is a bit
- 2:19:41Speaker 5: of a luxury, but it, this eats at your depth,
- 2:19:44Speaker 5: which the jazz don't have a ton of as it is.
- 2:19:48Speaker 1: Uh, this is going to be a tough, uh, what'd
- 2:19:51Speaker 1: you say?
- 2:19:52Speaker 5: 16 to 20 games stretch here without, without, uh, Jaron
- 2:19:57Speaker 5: Jackson jr. And much of that without Nurkic too. And look,
- 2:20:00Speaker 5: you hope he rushes back and in a healthy way.
- 2:20:02Speaker 5: And you hope that he's available as soon as possible.
- 2:20:04Speaker 1: And, The science on injury recovery is better now in
- 2:20:08Speaker 1: pro sports and every sport that it's ever been. But
- 2:20:12Speaker 1: I don't know how many more injuries, you can never
- 2:20:15Speaker 1: afford injuries, but a developing team that needs to know
- 2:20:18Speaker 1: what it is together can't really afford this in a
- 2:20:23Speaker 1: season that's supposed to matter, finally, for once. All right,
- 2:20:27Speaker 1: we'll take a break. We're going to give away that
- 2:20:30Speaker 1: free lunch at Zao Asian Cafe with a little topical trivia.
- 2:20:34Speaker 5: Zao about we do that. No, that was not endorsed
- 2:20:39Speaker 5: by the program. That is something that I use at home,
- 2:20:41Speaker 5: by the way. When we eat Zhao, we go, what's
- 2:20:45Speaker 5: Zhao about it?
- 2:20:49Speaker 1: I sympathize with your wife. She probably laughs, though, doesn't she?
- 2:20:55Speaker 1: She says it, too. I don't know.
- 2:20:58Speaker 2: Maybe I've infected her brain. You're wearing off on her.
- 2:21:01Speaker 2: You become infectious.
- 2:21:03Speaker 1: I have that effect on people. You've used some bad
- 2:21:06Speaker 1: puns since we started doing the show together. You slowly
- 2:21:10Speaker 1: wear us down, James. Sean O'Connell Show, one more segment.
- 2:21:13Speaker 1: ESPN 700, 92.1 FM. Born in the U.S.A.
- 2:21:19Speaker 4: You're tuned to.
- 2:21:20Speaker 9: The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of
- 2:21:24Speaker 9: ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 2:21:40Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. We're wrapping things
- 2:21:43Speaker 1: up here on a Tuesday. We got a free meal
- 2:21:48Speaker 1: card to Zhao Asian Cafe. Yesterday, they provided us the
- 2:21:52Speaker 1: hot lunch. I went white rice, natural chicken, all the fixings.
- 2:21:59Speaker 1: That was broccoli, pickled onions, pickled carrots, corn, and green
- 2:22:06Speaker 1: curry sauce. I think today I'm probably going to go
- 2:22:10Speaker 1: for the red curry sauce, but you can do teriyaki.
- 2:22:13Speaker 1: You can do no sauce. You can mix and match.
- 2:22:16Speaker 1: They've got salads. They've got tacos. They've got everything. Zao
- 2:22:20Speaker 1: Asian Cafe, Telemosi sent you a free meal card, 877-353-0700.
- 2:22:30Speaker 1: The Utah Mammoth current goals leader, current goals leader, not
- 2:22:34Speaker 1: points leader, goals leader for the Utah Mammoth as they
- 2:22:39Speaker 1: get ready for action against the Minnesota wild tonight at
- 2:22:42Speaker 1: the Delta center. I will be in attendance. If you
- 2:22:46Speaker 1: see me, please say hello. Don't make eye contact. I'm
- 2:22:52Speaker 1: just kidding. Come up, say hi. It'd be great.
- 2:22:55Speaker 5: Be sure that you give OC the key and peel.
- 2:22:59Speaker 5: White guy handshake when you see him. Eye contact, nod, handshake.
- 2:23:04Speaker 1: If we don't know each other, we probably don't have
- 2:23:06Speaker 1: a LeBron James customized secret handshake yet.
- 2:23:10Speaker 5: Pretend you're LeBron and you're talking to Dean Wade. You're
- 2:23:13Speaker 5: dapping up Dean Wade.
- 2:23:13Speaker 2: Go watch the video.
- 2:23:14Speaker 1: It's so good. It is fantastic, and it is directly
- 2:23:18Speaker 1: analogous to the Key & Peele.
- 2:23:20Speaker 2: Sketch the Barack Obama handshake line.
- 2:23:23Speaker 1: By the way, I got my Zao order yesterday. Got
- 2:23:26Speaker 1: a shout out.
- 2:23:27Speaker 5: They didn't have an orange chicken before that I'm aware of.
- 2:23:30Speaker 5: Maybe they've had it for a little while now. I
- 2:23:32Speaker 5: just haven't been. But they call it the golden citrus chicken.
- 2:23:36Speaker 5: It's a really good orange chicken. If you're looking for
- 2:23:39Speaker 5: a different protein, you haven't tried.
- 2:23:41Speaker 1: It, Zao. So you've got the natural chicken, which is
- 2:23:44Speaker 1: seasoned and grilled. You've got the golden citrus chicken. wok
- 2:23:48Speaker 1: tossed in an orange citrus glaze. Even on the website,
- 2:23:51Speaker 1: it looks fantastic. Steak, Mongolian beef. Oh, yes, that is
- 2:23:57Speaker 1: wok seared. That is rich and savory. And you can
- 2:24:01Speaker 1: also go organic tofu if you're, you know, one of
- 2:24:05Speaker 1: those vegans or vegetarians even. Or maybe you just like
- 2:24:09Speaker 1: tofu that much because who doesn't enjoy soft bean curd?
- 2:24:17Speaker 1: It's Thai spiced, too, according to the website. They got noodle.
- 2:24:22Speaker 1: Next time, I think noodle bowl instead of the white rice.
- 2:24:26Speaker 1: I love the bowl. Actually, looking at the belly in
- 2:24:28Speaker 1: this gray shirt, maybe Asian salad is the right way
- 2:24:30Speaker 1: to go. You never know.
- 2:24:34Speaker 2: Always love hearing from you.
- 2:24:35Speaker 7: 877-353-0700.
- 2:24:35Speaker 1: Spence and I had the pleasure last night of judging
- 2:24:42Speaker 1: a karaoke contest together at A wonderful location here in
- 2:24:46Speaker 1: the Salt Lake Valley that, as far as I know,
- 2:24:48Speaker 1: doesn't advertise with us yet. So we'll save their name
- 2:24:51Speaker 1: for later. But I will say this. Some talented individuals,
- 2:24:56Speaker 1: some sneaky, talented singers just rolling through random neighborhood bars.
- 2:25:02Speaker 1: Spence Check gets in the driver next, and he's right
- 2:25:05Speaker 1: here in front of me in our Broadway studios, if
- 2:25:07Speaker 1: you can believe it.
- 2:25:08Speaker 7: Hi.
- 2:25:08Speaker 10: You missed some controversy after you left.
- 2:25:10Speaker 1: Is that true?
- 2:25:11Speaker 6: It is true.
- 2:25:13Speaker 13: So I hung out for a little bit after you
- 2:25:15Speaker 13: took off, maybe another 20 minutes.
- 2:25:17Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:25:18Speaker 13: Maybe we should keep, well, I doubt that group is
- 2:25:23Speaker 13: tuned in to Sports Talk Radio this afternoon.
- 2:25:25Speaker 1: I did appreciate when we were invited to be the
- 2:25:29Speaker 1: guest judges at the karaoke contest, and then we showed up,
- 2:25:33Speaker 1: and I was like, There might be one person in
- 2:25:35Speaker 1: this place that actually listens to sports talk radio.
- 2:25:38Speaker 10: The kid that you and I both know.
- 2:25:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:25:40Speaker 10: Who showed up to say what's up.
- 2:25:41Speaker 1: Shout out TJ Jones.
- 2:25:43Speaker 10: TJ's awesome. Inhoke, proud Sigma Chi. Whatever. Caroline won.
- 2:25:50Speaker 7: Yes. Okay.
- 2:25:52Speaker 10: I had Mackerel as my number one.
- 2:25:54Speaker 1: Mackle. Whatever.
- 2:25:56Speaker 10: Again, not listening.
- 2:25:58Speaker 1: And then Jenny D. winner of the best booty award. Okay.
- 2:26:04Speaker 6: Last night.
- 2:26:05Speaker 10: Oh, shout out to judge booty, by the way.
- 2:26:07Speaker 1: Yes.
- 2:26:07Speaker 2: Our third judge, our third celebrity judge.
- 2:26:09Speaker 10: And she was more or less running the thing.
- 2:26:11Speaker 2: She basically handled it all.
- 2:26:13Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:26:13Speaker 10: She's been doing it for a few years. It was our,
- 2:26:15Speaker 10: our first year.
- 2:26:16Speaker 13: Well, um, do you remember the girl who was dressed
- 2:26:21Speaker 13: as a cat who I think finished second?
- 2:26:24Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:26:25Speaker 1: What do you remember her name? Adrian.
- 2:26:26Speaker 4: Adrian.
- 2:26:27Speaker 6: Wow.
- 2:26:28Speaker 13: That's good job. Well, She came up to me and
- 2:26:33Speaker 13: inquired about my order, who I had winning.
- 2:26:37Speaker 7: Oh.
- 2:26:38Speaker 13: And I told her I had her tied with Mackle
- 2:26:41Speaker 13: for first. And then, I don't know if it was
- 2:26:44Speaker 13: her boyfriend or probably somebody at the bar that was
- 2:26:46Speaker 13: trying to impress her.
- 2:26:47Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:26:48Speaker 10: Started grilling me as to why she didn't win.
- 2:26:50Speaker 7: Okay.
- 2:26:51Speaker 10: And I said, well, the cue was Caroline.
- 2:26:55Speaker 1: There's three judges.
- 2:26:56Speaker 10: Correct.
- 2:26:57Speaker 2: Three scorecards.
- 2:26:57Speaker 6: Correct.
- 2:26:58Speaker 13: And for like 10 minutes was like, mad that she
- 2:27:00Speaker 13: got 50 bucks and a hoodie in carolina singing a
- 2:27:05Speaker 13: song in front of seven intoxicated patrons yes so i
- 2:27:11Speaker 13: ended up just exiting okay so you you missed a
- 2:27:15Speaker 13: little you missed a little of the uh the drama.
- 2:27:17Speaker 1: I'm sorry i'm sorry that i missed that good time
- 2:27:19Speaker 1: that's great.
- 2:27:20Speaker 13: Time yeah i was not i thought i would be
- 2:27:22Speaker 13: home a little bit earlier than I was, but nonetheless
- 2:27:25Speaker 13: enjoyed it.
- 2:27:26Speaker 10: So it was fun hanging out with you. We don't
- 2:27:27Speaker 10: get to hang out a lot at the studio.
- 2:27:29Speaker 1: That's true. It was great. It was awesome.
- 2:27:31Speaker 2: So all of you with hidden talents out there, cultivate
- 2:27:35Speaker 2: those talents.
- 2:27:36Speaker 13: What about old boy who, like, we thought we were done,
- 2:27:38Speaker 13: and the guy grabs the mic and gives us a
- 2:27:41Speaker 13: little Zach Bryan.
- 2:27:42Speaker 10: I wanted to cry. It broke my heart. A little
- 2:27:44Speaker 10: orange whatever. The orange in the sky.
- 2:27:46Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 2:27:46Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:27:47Speaker 2: There were some good voices.
- 2:27:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:27:50Speaker 2: I think here for me, if you're in a.
- 2:27:52Speaker 1: Now, karaoke, if you're just doing karaoke for fun, sing
- 2:27:56Speaker 1: whatever song you want. If you're doing a karaoke contest,
- 2:28:00Speaker 1: song selection feels very important, people. 100%.
- 2:28:05Speaker 13: I think that's why I liked Mackle, because she actually...
- 2:28:07Speaker 13: It was a Journey tune, correct?
- 2:28:08Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:28:10Speaker 13: Yeah, that resonated. Because let me say this. Sean O'Connell, kids, wide...
- 2:28:17Speaker 13: Array of musical knowledge. Like, 90% of those songs, I
- 2:28:20Speaker 13: had no idea what they were.
- 2:28:21Speaker 1: That's surprising to me because I feel like I have
- 2:28:24Speaker 1: a very narrow musical scope because I listen to this crap. Oh, okay. Like,
- 2:28:30Speaker 1: me talking, you talking, Dan Patrick talking. Right, right, yeah. Like,
- 2:28:34Speaker 1: I don't listen to music very often.
- 2:28:36Speaker 13: You knew more of the songs than I did. Which,
- 2:28:38Speaker 13: that is an indictment on you. Judge Booty was singing
- 2:28:42Speaker 13: along to all of them.
- 2:28:42Speaker 2: She was singing everything.
- 2:28:44Speaker 13: And by the way, a fine performance in her own right.
- 2:28:47Speaker 13: A song not safe for work.
- 2:28:48Speaker 6: Yes.
- 2:28:50Speaker 13: But I thought she was, like, at one point, I
- 2:28:52Speaker 13: had her in the lead. She's like, oh, I can't win.
- 2:28:54Speaker 13: Because she, I guess, does that all the time.
- 2:28:57Speaker 6: Okay.
- 2:28:58Speaker 10: Did we spoil the party by not dressing up?
- 2:29:00Speaker 2: We weren't told to dress up, so that's not on us.
- 2:29:03Speaker 6: Okay.
- 2:29:03Speaker 1: All right.
- 2:29:04Speaker 6: Fair enough.
- 2:29:04Speaker 10: But anyway, fun night. Thanks for having us out.
- 2:29:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm going to leave it alone. Because we already
- 2:29:13Speaker 1: talked about it yesterday. Leave what alone? The Pat McAfee stuff. Oh,
- 2:29:17Speaker 1: the officials apology from the university and all that movement.
- 2:29:22Speaker 1: We already talked about it yesterday. All right.
- 2:29:26Speaker 13: Well, it seems to not go away at all. I
- 2:29:30Speaker 13: actually have one friend back East. The only time I
- 2:29:34Speaker 13: hear from him is when something weird happens in Utah.
- 2:29:37Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:29:37Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:29:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:29:38Speaker 13: And usually it's weird news. Like at one point he
- 2:29:42Speaker 13: sent me a text. He's like, why do you, Why
- 2:29:45Speaker 13: are moms like drowning kids in Utah all the time?
- 2:29:47Speaker 13: Why'd you say that? No, like weird, horrible news stories
- 2:29:54Speaker 13: is usually what I hear from him. Like weird crime
- 2:29:58Speaker 13: stories in Utah. And he actually, this morning, he's like, hey,
- 2:30:03Speaker 13: how do you handle the McAfee thing?
- 2:30:05Speaker 2: I was like, what?
- 2:30:05Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:30:06Speaker 2: It's registered on your East Coast radar?
- 2:30:08Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:30:09Speaker 13: So it really has reached a fever pitch across the
- 2:30:13Speaker 13: country where it's an unavoidable story.
- 2:30:17Speaker 10: We're their broadcast partner, okay?
- 2:30:20Speaker 13: So what I'll say is I understand why they feel
- 2:30:24Speaker 13: the need to do what they did.
- 2:30:27Speaker 10: I will say I don't believe it was necessary.
- 2:30:31Speaker 13: This to me is the embodiment of where we are
- 2:30:34Speaker 13: as a society as it pertains to engagement and the
- 2:30:42Speaker 13: culture now that has moved into the attention economy. This
- 2:30:47Speaker 13: is a story that's like exclusively online. I don't think
- 2:30:51Speaker 13: it's reverberating in normal people's real life that are not
- 2:30:54Speaker 13: on Twitter, not on Instagram or whatever.
- 2:30:58Speaker 1: Correct.
- 2:30:59Speaker 13: And anytime a story that I feel is exclusively online
- 2:31:03Speaker 13: starts to seep into reality, I just wonder how much
- 2:31:08Speaker 13: of us are spending way too much time focusing on
- 2:31:12Speaker 13: something that, quite frankly, isn't really germane to much of
- 2:31:17Speaker 13: anything as it pertains to what's important. What's important is
- 2:31:19Speaker 13: how this will affect the football team, and I'm quite
- 2:31:21Speaker 13: sure Morgan Scali is not focused on whether or not
- 2:31:24Speaker 13: Pat McAfee is ever coming back to Salt Lake City.
- 2:31:26Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:31:27Speaker 1: The best outcome here, though, is that they're back for
- 2:31:29Speaker 1: the Holy War bright and early.
- 2:31:32Speaker 2: That would be so amazing. It's not going to happen,
- 2:31:34Speaker 2: but I would love it.
- 2:31:35Speaker 13: See, the way I see this playing out is some
- 2:31:37Speaker 13: sort of redemption arc, because College Game Day will come
- 2:31:39Speaker 13: back to Utah.
- 2:31:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:31:41Speaker 13: It's not going to be Holy War, because if you
- 2:31:42Speaker 13: look at the slate that day... Oh, by the way,
- 2:31:46Speaker 13: depending on whether they... Well, I guess it doesn't matter
- 2:31:49Speaker 13: if they go ABC or ESPN, because it will be
- 2:31:53Speaker 13: the game right out of Game Day.
- 2:31:55Speaker 7: Yes.
- 2:31:55Speaker 1: 10 a.m.
- 2:31:57Speaker 10: Is the first game after Game Day ends.
- 2:31:59Speaker 1: Correct.
- 2:32:00Speaker 10: So it's going to be interesting to see when it's
- 2:32:02Speaker 10: time to pick.
- 2:32:04Speaker 10: Cincinnati, Utah, how that clown handles it.
- 2:32:08Speaker 1: I know exactly how it's going to be handled because
- 2:32:10Speaker 1: he knows what to do. He is a Showtime entertainer.
- 2:32:15Speaker 1: He is going to do what you or I would do.
- 2:32:18Speaker 1: He's going to play it up, and he is going
- 2:32:21Speaker 1: to get a little pop from whatever crowd.
- 2:32:24Speaker 10: Should I start doing my first segment with my shirt off?
- 2:32:28Speaker 2: I mean, you put in a lot of work.
- 2:32:30Speaker 10: I look better than Pat McAfee does with my shirt
- 2:32:31Speaker 10: off right now.
- 2:32:32Speaker 2: All right, go for it.
- 2:32:34Speaker 10: I mean, this is what we all do.
- 2:32:35Speaker 8: Now, right?
- 2:32:36Speaker 2: The kids are going to be nonplussed.
- 2:32:39Speaker 13: And I would deserve it, because it is creepy to
- 2:32:41Speaker 13: take your shirt off out of college campus. And by
- 2:32:43Speaker 13: the way, you do say corny things from time to time.
- 2:32:47Speaker 7: Not you.
- 2:32:47Speaker 10: I know I definitely do. Well, I know you do,
- 2:32:50Speaker 10: but I wasn't saying that to you in that moment.
- 2:32:53Speaker 1: Well, now I feel unsafe and uncomfortable.
- 2:32:54Speaker 6: As you should.
- 2:32:57Speaker 13: That might be the wildest portion of this entire thing.
- 2:33:00Speaker 2: It's definitely the wildest portion. It's so wild, like.
- 2:33:04Speaker 1: Claiming you're so uncomfortable that that horrible tragedy was brought
- 2:33:10Speaker 1: to mind is the biggest leap.
- 2:33:13Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:33:14Speaker 2: Like a grand Canyon hop across the line.
- 2:33:17Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:33:18Speaker 1: And again, this is, I'm telling you, I don't think
- 2:33:23Speaker 1: that that moment itself was calculated, but then everything since
- 2:33:28Speaker 1: is just like, okay, how do I maximize engagement? How
- 2:33:31Speaker 1: do I make this more of a thing? How do
- 2:33:33Speaker 1: I get this to be something that helps the show?
- 2:33:37Speaker 1: And so it's going to be handled that way from
- 2:33:40Speaker 1: here forth.
- 2:33:41Speaker 13: The weird thing about that, though, is most most provocateurs,
- 2:33:46Speaker 13: which is what he is, and a court jester and
- 2:33:48Speaker 13: a fragile man baby.
- 2:33:51Speaker 10: If they're stoking the flames intentionally.
- 2:33:55Speaker 13: They typically don't have the side of them that is
- 2:33:58Speaker 13: like bummed out if they get heat thrown in their direction.
- 2:34:04Speaker 1: I think Stephen A. Smith is a perfect example.
- 2:34:06Speaker 13: Like, he doesn't come across as a crybaby if he
- 2:34:11Speaker 13: gets heat thrown his way.
- 2:34:12Speaker 10: He leans into it and uses it for engagement.
- 2:34:15Speaker 13: But the weird part about all this is if we
- 2:34:17Speaker 13: operate off the premise that McAfee is doing this intentionally,
- 2:34:21Speaker 13: he's still acting like a petulant clown child on the
- 2:34:24Speaker 13: other side of it because he had his feelings heard
- 2:34:26Speaker 13: because a 19-year-old said he was going to say something corny.
- 2:34:28Speaker 1: See, I think we're past that now, and I think it's, okay,
- 2:34:32Speaker 1: how do we make this... my victory here. And he,
- 2:34:35Speaker 1: and he, here, he got it. He got the victory.
- 2:34:37Speaker 1: And that's, that's what I mean.
- 2:34:39Speaker 8: Right.
- 2:34:39Speaker 1: I think that when he first saw it, he was
- 2:34:42Speaker 1: a little miffed. I think that the girl saying only
- 2:34:45Speaker 1: $ 1 million, maybe justifiably was like, Oh, geez, not a
- 2:34:48Speaker 1: great look there.
- 2:34:49Speaker 2: Excuse me.
- 2:34:49Speaker 10: Yeah, for sure.
- 2:34:51Speaker 1: And then I think that he just stood on it
- 2:34:55Speaker 1: and it became a thing. And, but he got his,
- 2:34:57Speaker 1: he got his victory. And at some point he gets
- 2:35:00Speaker 1: to pound his chest and curl about that. Didn't happen
- 2:35:02Speaker 1: on the show today, as far as we could tell.
- 2:35:04Speaker 1: So we'll see.
- 2:35:05Speaker 10: Don't watch.
- 2:35:06Speaker 1: Don't listen.
- 2:35:06Speaker 10: Don't even know what it's on. But back to the
- 2:35:08Speaker 10: redemption arc.
- 2:35:09Speaker 13: Like, I can imagine a scenario where game day is
- 2:35:13Speaker 13: back here, and he actually does show up. And then
- 2:35:16Speaker 13: he'll lean into the whole, like, hey, let's kiss and
- 2:35:19Speaker 13: make up type thing. And then Paul Kirk will be
- 2:35:21Speaker 13: able to get some sleep. And then we'll all hug
- 2:35:24Speaker 13: each other, and it's kumbaya after that.
- 2:35:26Speaker 1: It's going to be an interesting drive with Spence Jacobs today.
- 2:35:29Speaker 6: Always is.
- 2:35:30Speaker 1: Stay tuned.
- 2:35:31Speaker 2: ESPN 792 on FX.
