- 0:00Speaker 1: On a single New York night, taxi dancer Bricky Coleman
- 0:03Speaker 1: meets Quinn Williams, a troubled young man from her small hometown,
- 0:07Speaker 1: and the two plan to catch an early bus home. Instead,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Quinn's theft from a former customer draws them into a
- 0:14Speaker 1: mounting predicament with the hours before dawn closing in. From CBS,
- 0:20Speaker 1: this is Suspense, Deadline at Dawn, Episode 5, originally broadcast
- 0:25Speaker 1: May 1st, 1948. Helen Walker plays Bricky, John Beale as Quinn,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and Irving Ravitch adapted Cornel Woolrich's 1944 novel written under
- 0:37Speaker 1: the name William Irish. Anton M. Leder produced and directed. Now,
- 0:43Speaker 1: back to the golden age of radio.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Suspense.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Radio's outstanding theater of thrills brings you an hour, a
- 1:11Speaker 3: full 60 minutes of suspense. Tonight, our stars, Miss Helen
- 1:16Speaker 3: Walker and Mr. John Beale. Our story, Deadline at Dawn
- 1:21Speaker 3: by William Irish. A suspense play produced and directed by
- 1:25Speaker 3: Anton M. Leder. If you've ever been alone in a
- 1:33Speaker 3: strange big city, you know the haunting loneliness of it.
- 1:37Speaker 3: And you know how the sight of a familiar face,
- 1:38Speaker 3: the sound of a familiar voice, can lift your spirits high.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Even a stranger who comes from your hometown becomes a
- 1:45Speaker 3: long-lost friend, because he brings with him a breath of home,
- 1:49Speaker 3: a flood of memories. That was the emotion that drew
- 1:52Speaker 3: Bricky Coleman and Quinn Williams together. But their meeting wasn't
- 1:55Speaker 3: the joyful, happy kind, for it was the beginning of
- 1:58Speaker 3: longing and fear and danger. And now, with the performances
- 2:04Speaker 3: of Helen Walker as Bricky Coleman and John Beale as
- 2:07Speaker 3: Quinn Williams, and with William Irish's great story, Deadline at Dawn,
- 2:12Speaker 3: we again hope to keep you in.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Suspense!
- 2:36Speaker 4: Until I met him, men were just pink dance tickets
- 2:39Speaker 4: to me. They were just two and a half cents
- 2:42Speaker 4: worth of commission on the dime. Piers of feet that
- 2:46Speaker 4: kept crowding mine all over the map, all over the floor,
- 2:49Speaker 4: all over the night. They were blank faces that could
- 2:53Speaker 4: steer me any way they wanted, until their five minutes
- 2:55Speaker 4: were up. Because I was a New York taxi dancer,
- 3:00Speaker 4: until I met him. A girl from a small town...
- 3:04Speaker 4: caught and held fast in the big city, with all
- 3:07Speaker 4: her dreams forgotten and all her hopes gone, and not
- 3:12Speaker 4: caring anymore, not caring at all, until I met him.
- 3:19Speaker 4: They always dimmed the lights for the last dance, just
- 3:22Speaker 4: to make the customers feel sentimental about it all. At
- 3:27Speaker 4: one in the morning, I was through again for the day.
- 3:29Speaker 4: I put on my coat, go out the side door,
- 3:33Speaker 4: Walk past the sad sacks who thought they were wolves
- 3:36Speaker 4: and loitered on the sidewalk. And then I'd begin the
- 3:39Speaker 4: twenty blocks to home. Home was a filthy old brownstone
- 3:45Speaker 4: down near the river. The long smiths an old army caught.
- 3:51Speaker 4: That was home. But at least it was a place
- 3:55Speaker 4: where I could get out of my shoes and make
- 3:57Speaker 4: some coffee and sleep to forget.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Yes.
- 4:01Speaker 4: I'd get home about 1.30.
- 4:03Speaker 5: You left your door open.
- 4:08Speaker 4: So I left my door open. Did you think that
- 4:12Speaker 4: was an invitation.
- 4:12Speaker 5: To walk in? You better close it now.
- 4:15Speaker 4: Hey, listen, here.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Close it. Please.
- 4:19Speaker 6: All right.
- 4:23Speaker 4: If you're a burglar, you won't find anything. The rats
- 4:27Speaker 4: got here first.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I am a burglar.
- 4:29Speaker 4: Well, then you're not a very smart one. What are
- 4:31Speaker 4: you looking for? Coffee grounds?
- 4:33Speaker 5: I wasn't looking for anything.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Then why don't you go, please? Find a nice, rich
- 4:37Speaker 4: old lady to rob.
- 4:38Speaker 5: Look, I need a place to stay for a while.
- 4:43Speaker 5: I thought maybe you would let me.
- 4:46Speaker 6: What?
- 4:46Speaker 4: Stay here? Look, I don't hand out favors. You're nothing
- 4:49Speaker 4: to me.
- 4:49Speaker 2: I know.
- 4:50Speaker 5: It was just a hunch I had. The way you
- 4:54Speaker 5: were looking at me. I thought I could come here
- 4:56Speaker 5: for help.
- 4:58Speaker 4: The way I was looking? I've never seen you before
- 5:01Speaker 4: in my life.
- 5:02Speaker 5: Well, you were looking straight at me. At the dance
- 5:05Speaker 5: hall about an hour ago.
- 5:07Speaker 4: You mean you were at the Cinderella ballroom tonight?
- 5:10Speaker 5: Don't you remember me?
- 5:11Speaker 4: No.
- 5:13Speaker 2: That's funny.
- 5:14Speaker 4: It's not funny at all. You all look the same
- 5:16Speaker 4: to me. Namely, horrible.
- 5:19Speaker 5: I guess it's my mistake. But I was sure. You
- 5:24Speaker 5: seemed so.
- 5:26Speaker 5: So nice.
- 5:27Speaker 7: Did I?
- 5:28Speaker 4: Yeah. That's because I was thinking of home. I always
- 5:32Speaker 4: do that on the job. Makes the night go faster.
- 5:35Speaker 5: I guess I know what you mean.
- 5:38Speaker 4: What'd you do, follow me?
- 5:39Speaker 8: No.
- 5:40Speaker 5: The man at the door gave me your address.
- 5:43Speaker 2: For a dollar.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Oh, he did, did he?
- 5:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I wanted to get off the streets. This time
- 5:47Speaker 5: of night, the cops are curious. I thought I saw
- 5:50Speaker 5: one of them following me, so I beat it down
- 5:52Speaker 5: this hall to hide. That's when I found your door open.
- 5:55Speaker 4: You picked a good place for hiding. Nobody ever comes
- 5:57Speaker 4: here but the landlady. Once a month.
- 5:59Speaker 5: Please let me stay a while.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Please.
- 6:04Speaker 4: What's your name?
- 6:05Speaker 2: Quinn Williams.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Quinn?
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:08Speaker 4: Never heard that name before.
- 6:09Speaker 5: It used to be my mother's before she got married.
- 6:12Speaker 9: I see.
- 6:14Speaker 2: What do you say?
- 6:17Speaker 4: You want some coffee, Quinn?
- 6:19Speaker 6: Thanks.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 6:21Speaker 4: But get this straight. One cup of coffee and nothing more.
- 6:24Speaker 4: No sugar goes with it. You give me one blink
- 6:27Speaker 4: too many... Just coffee, I understand.
- 6:29Speaker 5: A man can tell by looking at a girl whether
- 6:32Speaker 5: she means one.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Thing or another.
- 6:35Speaker 4: You'd be surprised how many of them ought to have
- 6:36Speaker 4: an optician.
- 6:38Speaker 2: I know.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Give me a match for the oven.
- 6:42Speaker 5: Here you are.
- 6:48Speaker 4: I got the oven lit and reached down some cups
- 6:50Speaker 4: and saucers and watched him. Not that I was worried.
- 6:54Speaker 4: I wouldn't have closed the door if I hadn't thought
- 6:56Speaker 4: I could handle him. It was only that he was
- 7:00Speaker 4: so young and his face was so tight and strained.
- 7:06Speaker 4: He'd been beat by the city. Must have been like
- 7:09Speaker 4: taking candy away from a baby. And he trusted me
- 7:13Speaker 4: because I'd smiled at him while I was dancing. And
- 7:17Speaker 4: he thought that smile was for him. I wished it
- 7:21Speaker 4: was all of a sudden because he was.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Coffee won't be long.
- 7:28Speaker 5: That's all right.
- 7:29Speaker 2: I'm in no hurry.
- 7:31Speaker 4: You're pretty young for a burglar, aren't you?
- 7:33Speaker 5: It doesn't take much training.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Where'd you come from? And how'd it happen?
- 7:39Speaker 5: Oh, I come from a little town. It's nothing much,
- 7:43Speaker 5: but I like it.
- 7:45Speaker 4: I'm a hick myself.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:47Speaker 5: My place is Glen Falls, Iowa. What's yours?
- 7:52Speaker 2: What's the matter?
- 7:53Speaker 4: Nothing.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Oh, I thought I said something wrong.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Oh, no, you said something right. It's crazy, a crazy coincidence,
- 8:00Speaker 4: but I come from Glen Falls, too.
- 8:01Speaker 9: Honest?
- 8:02Speaker 5: Honest.
- 8:03Speaker 4: What?
- 8:04Speaker 5: That's amazing.
- 8:05Speaker 4: I know it is. What street did you live on?
- 8:07Speaker 5: Anderson, up near Pine Street, second house down between Pine
- 8:09Speaker 5: and Oak.
- 8:10Speaker 8: When?
- 8:10Speaker 4: We're neighbors. What? I live just across the street from you.
- 8:14Speaker 5: Well, how is it we never met?
- 8:16Speaker 4: I don't know. I came here five years ago.
- 8:18Speaker 5: Oh, I've been here a year. You must have come
- 8:20Speaker 5: to New York before we moved in.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Sure am. Wait a minute. Have you got a brother
- 8:25Speaker 4: with a lot of freckles?
- 8:26Speaker 5: Yeah, Johnny. He's just a kid, about 18.
- 8:28Speaker 4: My sister's been writing to me about her new boyfriend,
- 8:30Speaker 4: a boy named Williams. How perfect he is, except for
- 8:32Speaker 4: the freckles. And, of course, they'll wear off.
- 8:34Speaker 6: Well, that's Johnny.
- 8:37Speaker 4: So you're the boy next door.
- 8:42Speaker 5: Well, we'd probably have known each other very well if
- 8:47Speaker 5: you'd stayed home.
- 8:49Speaker 4: I know.
- 8:52Speaker 5: I wish you had stayed. I do, too. What's your name?
- 8:58Speaker 4: Ruth Coleman. Everybody at home calls me Bricky. They started
- 9:02Speaker 4: it because I.
- 9:03Speaker 5: I know, because of your hair, huh?
- 9:04Speaker 4: That's right. Do you ever feel that you want to
- 9:08Speaker 4: go back?
- 9:10Speaker 5: Every day.
- 9:12Speaker 4: There's a bus leaves New York every morning at six.
- 9:15Speaker 4: I know, I've inquired. I've got the fare sewed up
- 9:19Speaker 4: in my mattress.
- 9:20Speaker 5: Why haven't you gone?
- 9:23Speaker 4: Because my mother thinks I'm dancing in a Broadway show.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Because I'd be too ashamed. Because it's so hard to
- 9:29Speaker 4: go back.
- 9:30Speaker 5: Yeah, but you ought to go, Bricky. This morning at
- 9:33Speaker 5: six o'clock.
- 9:34Speaker 6: It's hard.
- 9:34Speaker 5: You ought to go back.
- 9:36Speaker 4: Hard going back alone. If someone could come with me, I.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Would you come home too, Quinn?
- 9:45Speaker 5: No, Bricky.
- 9:46Speaker 4: You want to escape from the city, don't you? Just
- 9:48Speaker 4: like me. You want to go back?
- 9:49Speaker 5: Yeah, sure I do.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Well, then come with me. If it's the fare you're
- 9:51Speaker 4: worried about, I've got enough for both of us, including
- 9:53Speaker 4: a good dinner in Chicago. Anything for the boy next door, Quinn.
- 9:57Speaker 5: Thanks, Bricky, but it's too late. The police will be
- 10:00Speaker 5: looking for me around 8 o'clock this morning.
- 10:03Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 10:05Speaker 4: I forgot. How long have you been a burglar?
- 10:11Speaker 5: About three hours.
- 10:13Speaker 4: Three hours?
- 10:15Speaker 5: I did it tonight for the first time. So you see, Bricky,
- 10:19Speaker 5: it's a little too late for me to go back.
- 10:22Speaker 5: I've missed the bus by three hours.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Coffee's ready, Quinn.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Oh, good.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Cream and sugar?
- 10:32Speaker 5: No, thanks.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Black.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Was it easy?
- 10:45Speaker 2: Very easy.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Why'd you do it?
- 10:48Speaker 5: You'll do anything when you've gone for four days without eating.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Oh. But it's funny.
- 10:54Speaker 5: After I'd done it, I went straight to the best
- 10:56Speaker 5: restaurant in town. I looked at the menu and got
- 10:59Speaker 5: ready to order everything on it. Two helpings of everything.
- 11:02Speaker 5: But I couldn't eat. So I got up and walked out.
- 11:08Speaker 5: That's when I began to think cops were trailing me.
- 11:12Speaker 5: I'm not used to being a robber.
- 11:14Speaker 4: So you still got it all with you? $ 2, 500 in cash.
- 11:21Speaker 5: Divided up into small rolls in all my pockets. You
- 11:25Speaker 5: want to see it?
- 11:27Speaker 4: No.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Neither do I. But it's there. I can feel it.
- 11:33Speaker 5: Against my skin, all over my body.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Where did you get it, Quinn?
- 11:38Speaker 5: I was working for an electrician about four months ago.
- 11:42Speaker 5: One day I got a call to go to a
- 11:43Speaker 5: big house on 71st Street and put a fixture in
- 11:46Speaker 5: the bathroom wall. I had to cut a big hole
- 11:48Speaker 5: in the wall to do it. While I was doing that,
- 11:51Speaker 5: I ran into a wooden box in the wall. I
- 11:55Speaker 5: did my work just beside it.
- 11:57Speaker 4: And that box?
- 11:59Speaker 5: That box was the back of a safe.
- 12:02Speaker 9: Oh.
- 12:03Speaker 5: Put into the wall of a study in the next room.
- 12:06Speaker 5: The front of the safe was good heavy steel. When
- 12:09Speaker 5: they built it, nobody thought it could be broken into
- 12:11Speaker 5: from the other side through the bathroom. And nobody ever
- 12:13Speaker 5: would have either. till an electrician ran into it one
- 12:16Speaker 5: day by mistake.
- 12:18Speaker 4: But all this happened four months ago.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:22Speaker 5: You see, I'd brought more tools with me than I
- 12:24Speaker 5: needed that day, and I left some of them in
- 12:26Speaker 5: my bag downstairs on a little table near the front door.
- 12:29Speaker 5: When I got back to the shop, I found a
- 12:31Speaker 5: key in the bag. I must have brushed it in
- 12:33Speaker 5: while I was putting the tools back after finishing the job.
- 12:37Speaker 5: It turned out to be a key to the front door.
- 12:40Speaker 4: You didn't return it.
- 12:42Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 12:43Speaker 5: Oh, I meant to, but Right then, I forgot all
- 12:46Speaker 5: about it. And when I did remember that I had
- 12:49Speaker 5: the key, I was out of work and hungry and
- 12:54Speaker 5: wanting money badly, so I went back there to another box.
- 13:00Speaker 5: I opened that hole again, pulled the back of the
- 13:02Speaker 5: safe out. I didn't bother with any of the papers
- 13:05Speaker 5: or securities. I just took the cash. The house was empty.
- 13:10Speaker 5: The man who lives there, a society fella by the
- 13:12Speaker 5: name of Graves, was probably out on the town, so
- 13:16Speaker 5: I just walked out the front door. Seems like ten
- 13:21Speaker 5: years ago. It was only three hours.
- 13:25Speaker 4: So this Graves man will see the hole in the
- 13:28Speaker 4: morning when he goes in to take a shower and
- 13:31Speaker 4: then he'll call the police?
- 13:32Speaker 5: It'll be a quick trial and a short one. But
- 13:36Speaker 5: the sentence won't be so short.
- 13:38Speaker 4: The boy next door. The boy you wave to when
- 13:42Speaker 4: you come in or out of your gate. The grinning
- 13:45Speaker 4: boy next door, friendly as a puppy.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Go back, Bricky.
- 13:49Speaker 5: It's where you belong. It's the only kind of life
- 13:51Speaker 5: for you.
- 13:51Speaker 4: Come with me, Quinn.
- 13:52Speaker 5: I've told you I can't. They've got a long arm.
- 13:55Speaker 5: They'll find me. And I'd rather have them find me
- 13:58Speaker 5: here in the city.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Have you still got the key? The key you went
- 14:03Speaker 4: in with?
- 14:04Speaker 9: Yeah. Why?
- 14:06Speaker 4: Well, if you can get back in before he comes home,
- 14:10Speaker 4: just in and out, long enough to put the money back,
- 14:12Speaker 4: They won't come all the way to Iowa for you
- 14:14Speaker 4: just for chopping a hole in the wall if nothing's
- 14:16Speaker 4: been taken.
- 14:16Speaker 5: Ricky, that's probably.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Don't you want to go home at 6 o'clock this morning?
- 14:21Speaker 2: Yes, Ricky.
- 14:22Speaker 4: If he's out on the town, he won't be home yet.
- 14:23Speaker 4: At least that's what we'll pray for. We? We'll go together. Now,
- 14:28Speaker 4: I'll wait outside for you, and then we'll go down
- 14:29Speaker 4: to the terminal and buy our tickets and wait for
- 14:32Speaker 4: the bus. We'll wait for dawn together, Quinn.
- 14:36Speaker 5: You mean you'd do this for me?
- 14:37Speaker 4: For the boy next door. Anytime. Anything. There was no
- 14:46Speaker 4: time to lose. Graves might be coming home any minute.
- 14:49Speaker 4: I ripped the money out of my mattress and we
- 14:51Speaker 4: ran out into the cold, empty streets. Just as a
- 14:54Speaker 4: cab cruised by. We piled into it and told him
- 14:57Speaker 4: to take us to 71st Street. And to take us fast.
- 15:02Speaker 4: Everybody's always in a hurry.
- 15:04Speaker 5: What's your hurry?
- 15:05Speaker 4: The night's young yet. Never mind the conversation, Joe.
- 15:08Speaker 9: Drive.
- 15:09Speaker 4: The customer's always right.
- 15:16Speaker 5: I just remembered.
- 15:17Speaker 9: What?
- 15:18Speaker 5: I can't pay for this cab unless I use some
- 15:20Speaker 5: of our capital.
- 15:22Speaker 4: I don't care what you use, pal, just so it's money.
- 15:25Speaker 4: Don't worry about it. You'll get paid. I'll pay him.
- 15:28Speaker 4: We don't want to use any of our capital, not
- 15:30Speaker 4: a single penny. It's all got to go back.
- 15:33Speaker 5: Ricky, when we get out of this, when we get
- 15:34Speaker 5: back home, I'll thank you then. I'll find a way
- 15:38Speaker 5: to thank you.
- 15:40Speaker 2: 71st Street.
- 15:42Speaker 7: Any special number?
- 15:43Speaker 5: No, just let us out here on the corner.
- 15:51Speaker 4: That's 90 cents. And I can break a 50 if
- 15:54Speaker 4: I have to. Here's 90 cents. And here's a dime.
- 15:57Speaker 5: Have fun.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Well, here we are.
- 16:16Speaker 4: Where's the house?
- 16:17Speaker 5: Across the street and up a little. You wait here.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Don't come any closer than this I'll be back in
- 16:24Speaker 5: no time Don't be frightened, Bricky.
- 16:26Speaker 4: Don't take any chances, Quinn If you see any lights
- 16:28Speaker 4: If it looks as if he's gotten back already Don't
- 16:31Speaker 4: go all the way in Just drop the money inside
- 16:33Speaker 4: the door All right, Bricky Goodbye, then Goodbye, Quinn Hurry
- 16:38Speaker 4: back I waited for him there in the chilly night
- 16:46Speaker 4: On the dark, empty street Why? I knew better New
- 16:52Speaker 4: York had taught me one thing, and that was never
- 16:54Speaker 4: to be a sucker for a man. But then, this
- 16:57Speaker 4: was no man. This was the boy who lived across
- 17:01Speaker 4: from me on Anderson Street in Glen Falls, Iowa. The
- 17:05Speaker 4: boy who'd come here to do big things, to lick
- 17:07Speaker 4: the town. And instead, he'd been licked. Instead, he was
- 17:13Speaker 4: hiding in the dark, sneaking along the streets, helpless. The
- 17:18Speaker 4: boy next door. Then I suddenly crouched back into a doorway.
- 17:22Speaker 4: A patrolman was coming on his tour of duty. He
- 17:25Speaker 4: stopped near me, not ten yards away. But his back
- 17:29Speaker 4: was to me, and his hand was opening a call box.
- 17:35Speaker 6: Ronson reporting in.
- 17:37Speaker 2: 2.35 a.m.
- 17:39Speaker 6: How's the rummy game going? And another thing, side. Quiet
- 17:44Speaker 6: as church.
- 17:46Speaker 4: He finished his call, closed the box, and went on
- 17:49Speaker 4: down the street. Then he turned a corner and disappeared.
- 17:54Speaker 4: And I breathed again. He'd been right, though. It was
- 18:01Speaker 4: quiet as a church. And that was wrong. Because Quinn
- 18:06Speaker 4: should have been back long ago.
- 18:12Speaker 9: Ricky.
- 18:12Speaker 4: What's the matter?
- 18:13Speaker 6: Ricky.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Tell me, Quinn. What is it? What is it? What
- 18:15Speaker 4: are you frightened about? What happened in there?
- 18:17Speaker 5: He's been killed.
- 18:18Speaker 6: What?
- 18:19Speaker 2: He's dead. He's lying in there.
- 18:20Speaker 10: Dead.
- 18:21Speaker 4: The man who lives there?
- 18:22Speaker 2: Yeah, Mr. Graves.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Was it you, Quinn? Did you do it the first
- 18:30Speaker 4: time you were in there and I.
- 18:32Speaker 5: I swear I didn't, Ricky. I only took the money.
- 18:34Speaker 5: He wasn't even there. He must have come back since.
- 18:37Speaker 4: I knew you didn't, Quinn. I knew even though I asked.
- 18:42Speaker 5: Go down to the terminal. Get your ticket and climb
- 18:45Speaker 5: on that bus and forget we ever met.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Go on, Ricky. Beat it.
- 18:48Speaker 5: Before they find out.
- 18:49Speaker 4: Not without you.
- 18:50Speaker 5: But don't you see now, it's murder they'll charge me with.
- 18:53Speaker 5: They'll find the bathroom fixture tampered with, they'll trace it
- 18:55Speaker 5: to the electrician, then to me, and they'll naturally think, oh,
- 18:58Speaker 5: don't you see, it's too late, Ricky.
- 18:59Speaker 4: It's never too late. Don't you know that? Not until
- 19:03Speaker 4: the last second of the last minute of the last hour.
- 19:06Speaker 5: What do you mean?
- 19:07Speaker 4: We'll go back in there and see if we can
- 19:08Speaker 4: figure it out. It's our only hope. We're fighting for
- 19:11Speaker 4: our lives, Quinn, for our lives, and we have until
- 19:13Speaker 4: six o'clock this morning to win our fight.
- 19:16Speaker 5: All right, champ. Come on.
- 19:21Speaker 4: And so, very slowly, we went together Into the place
- 19:25Speaker 4: where death was The door closed on our backs And
- 19:30Speaker 4: we felt our way down a long and narrow.
- 19:32Speaker 5: Hallway He's upstairs I don't want any lights on down
- 19:36Speaker 5: here Just hang on to my sleeve, I'll lead the
- 19:38Speaker 5: way All right.
- 19:41Speaker 4: We went forward in a sort of swimming darkness That
- 19:43Speaker 4: was almost liquid, it was so dense I could feel
- 19:47Speaker 4: the muscles in his arms shivering But he was brave,
- 19:51Speaker 4: not afraid. He was going into it, not running away
- 19:55Speaker 4: from it.
- 19:55Speaker 5: There's a step here.
- 19:58Speaker 4: The stair creaked under our weight. I wondered if there
- 20:01Speaker 4: were anyone else in the house. Anyone still alive. Suppose
- 20:06Speaker 4: someone had slept through the murder... I'd be awakened any
- 20:09Speaker 4: moment by.
- 20:10Speaker 5: Us I'll turn to the right Okay.
- 20:14Speaker 4: We're on the second floor now I smell the aroma
- 20:18Speaker 4: of leather and woodwork I smell the last lingering trace
- 20:22Speaker 4: of a cigar I smelled powder A harsh, deadly powder
- 20:30Speaker 4: And then I thought I saw I thought I smelled
- 20:32Speaker 4: something sweet Something very sweet Here, Bricky All right They
- 20:40Speaker 4: say you can't smell a recent death, but I could
- 20:44Speaker 4: smell a stillness and a presence in it that was
- 20:47Speaker 4: more than just emptiness.
- 20:49Speaker 5: Get your eyes ready. Here go the lights.
- 20:54Speaker 4: The dead man lay in the middle of the study.
- 20:56Speaker 4: His face was all out of focus. The lines that
- 21:00Speaker 4: had been laugh lines were creases now. The mouth that
- 21:03Speaker 4: had been either strong or weak was just a gap now,
- 21:07Speaker 4: a place where the face was open. The eyes that
- 21:10Speaker 4: had been either kindly or cruel were just glossy, lifeless
- 21:14Speaker 4: insects now. This was the dead man, and we'd come
- 21:20Speaker 4: for his secret.
- 21:22Speaker 2: This is it, Bricky.
- 21:24Speaker 4: Yes, this is it.
- 21:27Speaker 5: Now what do we do?
- 21:29Speaker 4: Well, shouldn't we close it? They seem to be watching us.
- 21:36Speaker 2: No, don't touch him.
- 21:37Speaker 5: I don't know how to anyway.
- 21:41Speaker 4: He's still in his tuxedo. He couldn't have been home
- 21:45Speaker 4: very long.
- 21:45Speaker 2: No.
- 21:47Speaker 4: Can you tell what it was done with?
- 21:49Speaker 5: No, I'll have to unbutton his jacket.
- 21:52Speaker 6: All right.
- 21:55Speaker 4: Go ahead.
- 21:59Speaker 5: There it is. Must have been a gun.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Yeah, a bullet.
- 22:03Speaker 5: It's round and frazzled. A knife would have made a slit.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Can be sure no one else was in the house
- 22:07Speaker 4: or they would have heard it go off.
- 22:08Speaker 5: And the killer must have taken the gun away. There's
- 22:09Speaker 5: no sign of one lying around.
- 22:10Speaker 4: So he didn't do it himself. It can't be suicide.
- 22:12Speaker 5: That's right.
- 22:14Speaker 6: Now what?
- 22:16Speaker 5: We'd better look in his pockets. Yes.
- 22:19Speaker 2: I'll do it.
- 22:20Speaker 5: You look the things over as I hand them to you.
- 22:22Speaker 6: All right, Quinn.
- 22:23Speaker 5: I'll start up here in the breast pocket. That's the
- 22:25Speaker 5: highest pocket in anybody's suit. His handkerchief.
- 22:29Speaker 4: Look, Quinn. The bullet went through this. The way it
- 22:34Speaker 4: folded it Just made one little hole. But when you
- 22:38Speaker 4: open it up, it makes three separate holes. Like when
- 22:42Speaker 4: you cut papers and make them into patterns.
- 22:45Speaker 5: The one on the left side's empty. The right-hand pocket,
- 22:50Speaker 5: empty too.
- 22:51Speaker 4: Try inside the jacket.
- 22:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:53Speaker 4: Take out everything, no matter what it is.
- 22:55Speaker 9: All right.
- 22:58Speaker 4: Cigarette case, silver, Tiffany's. Three cigarettes in it. The wallet.
- 23:06Speaker 4: Two fives and a single. Two ticket stubs from tonight's
- 23:09Speaker 4: show at the Belasco. See 112 and 114. So we
- 23:13Speaker 4: know where he was from 8.30 to 11.
- 23:14Speaker 5: Anything else?
- 23:17Speaker 4: Business cards. Stafford, Holmes, Inglesby, whoever they are. Oh, and
- 23:23Speaker 4: a snapshot. Girl in riding togs.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Let's see that.
- 23:27Speaker 5: Yeah, it's the same ones in the silver frame over
- 23:29Speaker 5: there on the desk. To Stephen with love from Barbara.
- 23:33Speaker 4: Then she didn't do it. If she had, she wouldn't
- 23:35Speaker 4: be there on his desk anymore. Just the silver frame, maybe,
- 23:37Speaker 4: but not her anymore. That's common sense.
- 23:39Speaker 5: All right, let's go on. I'll have to lift him
- 23:42Speaker 5: a little.
- 23:43Speaker 4: Go ahead.
- 23:47Speaker 5: Left rear in the trousers.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Nothing. Right rear.
- 23:54Speaker 5: Spare handkerchief.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Left side.
- 23:57Speaker 8: Nothing.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Right side.
- 24:03Speaker 6: Match folder.
- 24:04Speaker 5: Some loose change.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Latch key. That's it.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Not much help.
- 24:16Speaker 5: Do we know what we're.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Doing, Bricky?
- 24:18Speaker 4: I don't know. Quinn?
- 24:22Speaker 6: What?
- 24:23Speaker 4: A man who's a cigarette smoker, and we found that
- 24:26Speaker 4: case in his pocket. Would he go in for cigars, too?
- 24:30Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 24:30Speaker 5: Some people smoke both.
- 24:31Speaker 4: But would he smoke two cigars alone by himself? Look, Quinn.
- 24:36Speaker 4: Two butts in this tray.
- 24:37Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 24:38Speaker 5: And the tray is between two chairs facing each other.
- 24:42Speaker 5: One cigar in one notch of the tray. The other
- 24:44Speaker 5: one around on the other side from it.
- 24:46Speaker 4: Two people, Quinn. Two men.
- 24:48Speaker 5: And they were having an argument. One of them was
- 24:50Speaker 5: worked up about something. You see? This butt is smooth
- 24:53Speaker 5: at the mouth end.
- 24:53Speaker 2: And look at this one.
- 24:54Speaker 5: Chewed to ribbons. Chewed to a fringe. That tells it.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Which is which? Who was calm and who was steamed up?
- 25:00Speaker 4: And who was the other man with Graves? Oh, Quinn.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Wait a minute. Here's something. What?
- 25:06Speaker 5: It must have fallen out of his pocket. He was
- 25:07Speaker 5: probably sitting on it.
- 25:09Speaker 11: Fine.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Another book of matches.
- 25:12Speaker 5: That's just it. Another one. Graves had some on him,
- 25:15Speaker 5: so this is the other man.
- 25:16Speaker 4: And did he leave his name on it?
- 25:18Speaker 5: No, but he was excited. Look how many matches he
- 25:21Speaker 5: used up just on that one cigar.
- 25:22Speaker 4: The folder could have been half used up before he began.
- 25:24Speaker 5: Maybe, but take this. What does it tell you?
- 25:27Speaker 4: Tells me to chew Dawson's gum.
- 25:30Speaker 5: Not to cover inside.
- 25:31Speaker 4: I don't know. What are you driving at?
- 25:35Speaker 2: Now, wait.
- 25:36Speaker 5: Here, take my matches. Now, tear one off and strike it.
- 25:41Speaker 6: All right.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Okay.
- 25:44Speaker 6: Blow it out.
- 25:46Speaker 5: You see what you did?
- 25:48Speaker 10: No.
- 25:49Speaker 5: You tore the match from the right-hand side, didn't you?
- 25:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:52Speaker 5: That's what everybody does. They start on the outside, on
- 25:54Speaker 5: the right, and work their way over to the left...
- 25:57Speaker 5: But this folder was worked in reverse. Now, do you see?
- 26:00Speaker 5: The man sitting in this chair, facing Graves, was left-handed.
- 26:05Speaker 4: I see.
- 26:06Speaker 5: We're making progress.
- 26:09Speaker 4: Are we, Quinn?
- 26:09Speaker 5: Of course we are. We know this man was rattled
- 26:12Speaker 5: about something. That he whittled away 15 matches to one cigar,
- 26:15Speaker 5: then mangled it to ribbons between his teeth. That he
- 26:18Speaker 5: was probably on bad terms with Graves, and that he's left-handed.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Fine.
- 26:22Speaker 4: Only you've missed something.
- 26:23Speaker 9: What?
- 26:24Speaker 4: The matches belonged to a woman.
- 26:27Speaker 5: A woman? A woman chopped that cigar to pieces?
- 26:30Speaker 4: Smell the folder. What do you get?
- 26:33Speaker 5: Sulfur, the way matches always.
- 26:35Speaker 4: Now, give that a minute to clear away. That's the
- 26:37Speaker 4: stronger of the two. It tops the other. Now.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Okay.
- 26:43Speaker 4: Perfume, isn't it?
- 26:45Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 26:45Speaker 4: It's been carried around all day in a handbag. A
- 26:48Speaker 4: handbag that stinks of perfume. I noticed it in the
- 26:51Speaker 4: dark when we were coming in. There's been a woman
- 26:53Speaker 4: in this room tonight.
- 26:54Speaker 5: Well, that gives us two of them. A man and
- 26:57Speaker 5: a woman. And they weren't here together. There were only
- 27:00Speaker 5: two chairs, one for Graves and the other one for
- 27:02Speaker 5: each of his visitors.
- 27:03Speaker 4: Who was the last to go, the man or the woman?
- 27:05Speaker 5: I don't know, but we're started. Look what we've dug
- 27:08Speaker 5: up in half an hour.
- 27:10Speaker 4: Two unidentified people in the biggest city in the world.
- 27:14Speaker 5: Oh, you're right. It's no use.
- 27:18Speaker 4: Oh, even so, we can't give up.
- 27:20Speaker 5: It's no use. And what's more, I'm yellow, Bricky. Let's
- 27:25Speaker 5: give it up.
- 27:26Speaker 4: You're not yellow, Quinn. Or I wouldn't be up here
- 27:29Speaker 4: in this room with you.
- 27:31Speaker 5: I'd better tell you this while I can, Bricky.
- 27:33Speaker 2: What? I love you.
- 27:40Speaker 4: It's three o'clock, Quinn, and we have till six. Three hours.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Bricky.
- 27:48Speaker 4: Save it, Quinn. Save it for the bus when we're
- 27:52Speaker 4: on our way home.
- 27:53Speaker 5: All right. But I don't know what to do next,
- 27:57Speaker 5: do you?
- 27:59Speaker 9: No.
- 28:00Speaker 4: I don't.
- 28:02Speaker 2: What's that?
- 28:13Speaker 3: In tonight's full hour of suspense, Helen Walker and John
- 28:17Speaker 3: Beale co-star in Deadline at Dawn by William Irish. Tonight's
- 28:21Speaker 3: study in suspense. In just a moment, we will return
- 28:32Speaker 3: with Act Two of Suspense.
- 28:34Speaker 12: This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System. And now, back
- 28:39Speaker 12: to our.
- 28:40Speaker 3: Hollywood soundstage in Act Two of Deadline at Dawn, co-starring
- 28:44Speaker 3: Miss Helen Walker as Bricky Coleman and Mr. John Beale
- 28:48Speaker 3: as Quinn Williams in radio's outstanding theater of thrills, Suspense.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Suspense.
- 29:05Speaker 3: All the emotions of a lifetime have been crowded into
- 29:08Speaker 3: one night for Bricky Coleman and Quinn Williams, and dawn
- 29:11Speaker 3: is a fast-approaching deadline which they must meet. The bus
- 29:15Speaker 3: which will take them to home and safety seems remote
- 29:17Speaker 3: and unattainable as they stand now over the body of
- 29:21Speaker 3: a dead man in the quiet apartment, knowing that they
- 29:25Speaker 3: must find his murderer or stand incriminated for the crime themselves.
- 29:30Speaker 5: And suddenly, a terrifying sound comes to them.
- 29:34Speaker 2: What is it, Bricky?
- 29:36Speaker 11: What is it?
- 29:36Speaker 4: It sounds like a burglar alarm.
- 29:38Speaker 5: Or a front doorbell, maybe. Wait a minute, there's a
- 29:41Speaker 5: box over there, against the wall.
- 29:42Speaker 6: A telephone.
- 29:43Speaker 5: Follow the cord. It's in his desk. In the drawer.
- 29:48Speaker 4: What should we do?
- 29:48Speaker 5: I ought to answer it.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Oh, be careful.
- 29:51Speaker 4: You'll have the police here. They'll know it's not his voice.
- 29:53Speaker 5: I'll talk lower. I'll pretend I'm him. Say a prayer, Bricky.
- 30:02Speaker 6: Hello?
- 30:03Speaker 9: Darling, this is Barbara. I had to speak to you.
- 30:07Speaker 9: We've never parted angry like this before.
- 30:08Speaker 10: I know.
- 30:10Speaker 9: Maybe if we hadn't gone there, to that parakeet place,
- 30:13Speaker 9: it wouldn't have happened.
- 30:15Speaker 2: No.
- 30:15Speaker 9: Who was she? The tall redhead in the light green dress?
- 30:20Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 30:21Speaker 9: You told me that before. Then why'd she slip a
- 30:24Speaker 9: note into your hand? I saw her do it, you know.
- 30:28Speaker 6: Did you?
- 30:29Speaker 9: And then you couldn't wait to see me to my
- 30:30Speaker 9: door and get me off your hands. What happened, Steve?
- 30:34Speaker 9: Did this woman come by to see you afterward? Is
- 30:37Speaker 9: that why you wanted to get rid of me?
- 30:39Speaker 5: No, Barbara.
- 30:41Speaker 9: Steve, you sound so far away. Is it the telephone?
- 30:47Speaker 2: Or is it you?
- 30:49Speaker 5: Poor connection.
- 30:50Speaker 9: You sound so cagey. As if someone were there now.
- 30:54Speaker 9: Can't you talk louder?
- 30:56Speaker 5: I'm sorry, I.
- 30:57Speaker 9: What's going on there? This is Stephen, isn't it?
- 31:00Speaker 5: It's just catching on.
- 31:01Speaker 2: I'm sunk.
- 31:02Speaker 4: Take your hand away from the mouthpiece and turn it
- 31:03Speaker 4: my way. Sugar, come on. I'm getting tired of waiting.
- 31:08Speaker 4: How much longer are you going to stand there talking?
- 31:13Speaker 9: I'm sorry, Steven. Forgive me. I didn't know.
- 31:19Speaker 4: You can hang up now.
- 31:20Speaker 5: I feel like a heel.
- 31:25Speaker 4: Well, stop it. We don't have time.
- 31:26Speaker 5: The parakeet. That's a nightclub, isn't it?
- 31:29Speaker 4: Yes, on 54th Street. A woman slipped him a note, Quinn.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Our woman. Could be.
- 31:34Speaker 4: Do you think he tore it up?
- 31:35Speaker 2: Maybe not.
- 31:35Speaker 5: Maybe he wanted to have a good look at it
- 31:36Speaker 5: when he got home, alone.
- 31:38Speaker 4: Let's look again.
- 31:39Speaker 5: I went through those pockets pretty carefully. I'm sure it's
- 31:41Speaker 5: not there.
- 31:42Speaker 4: We might have missed something. Quinn, turn him over again.
- 31:46Speaker 2: All right. Nothing. Nothing at all.
- 31:56Speaker 5: Shall we go through the desk?
- 31:57Speaker 4: Wait a minute.
- 31:58Speaker 9: What?
- 31:59Speaker 4: Run your eyes over him again.
- 32:00Speaker 5: I don't see a thing.
- 32:04Speaker 4: He's very well dressed. And yet, isn't that a hole
- 32:08Speaker 4: in the heel of his sock? There, just showing over
- 32:12Speaker 4: the shoe?
- 32:12Speaker 5: That's funny.
- 32:15Speaker 4: Take his shoe off, Quinn. Okay.
- 32:23Speaker 2: The note.
- 32:24Speaker 4: Of course. He didn't want Barbara to see it.
- 32:26Speaker 5: So he hid it here until he could be alone.
- 32:28Speaker 4: And he never was alone.
- 32:29Speaker 5: Just a scrawl.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Go on. Mr.
- 32:32Speaker 5: Graves, I'd like to speak to you in private after
- 32:38Speaker 5: you've taken the young lady home. And I don't mean
- 32:42Speaker 5: some other time. I mean tonight. I wouldn't want to
- 32:46Speaker 5: be disappointed. That's all.
- 32:49Speaker 2: It isn't signed.
- 32:50Speaker 4: A woman of the matches.
- 32:52Speaker 5: Sounds like a shakedown.
- 32:53Speaker 4: You mean blackmail?
- 32:54Speaker 5: That's right. He'd have to pay attention to a note
- 32:56Speaker 5: like this.
- 32:56Speaker 4: Then we're going nightclubbing, my boy. We'll visit the parakeet.
- 33:00Speaker 5: It'll be closing by now.
- 33:01Speaker 4: She must have been seen there. A tall redhead in
- 33:03Speaker 4: a light green dress. We'll check with the people who
- 33:05Speaker 4: work there. They'll still be around. Waiters, checkroom girl, washroom attendant.
- 33:08Speaker 4: We'll find her.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Oh, we will, Bricky.
- 33:10Speaker 4: I'll trace her if I have to go over the
- 33:11Speaker 4: hairbrushes in the dressing room one by one for stray
- 33:14Speaker 4: red hairs.
- 33:14Speaker 5: Let me kill the lights. I'll be right with you.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Hey, don't forget the switch. The one over the sink
- 33:18Speaker 4: in the bathroom.
- 33:18Speaker 10: I won't.
- 33:21Speaker 4: Come on, Quinn. Time's running out.
- 33:22Speaker 5: In a minute.
- 33:26Speaker 4: Is anything wrong?
- 33:27Speaker 5: I don't know. Look what I found.
- 33:32Speaker 4: Why, it's a check.
- 33:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:35Speaker 4: Made out to Stephen Graves for $ 12, 000. Signed by Arthur Holmes.
- 33:41Speaker 5: And look how it's stamped.
- 33:42Speaker 2: Returned.
- 33:43Speaker 5: No funds.
- 33:44Speaker 4: Where'd you find it?
- 33:45Speaker 5: In the dry bottom of the tub.
- 33:47Speaker 4: How did it ever get there?
- 33:48Speaker 2: Just one way.
- 33:50Speaker 5: When I came here tonight, the first time, I did it.
- 33:53Speaker 11: How?
- 33:53Speaker 5: Well, don't you see, when I pulled the cash box
- 33:55Speaker 5: out and opened it, the check must have slipped out
- 33:57Speaker 5: into the tub without my noticing it.
- 33:59Speaker 8: Oh.
- 34:00Speaker 5: And then this fellow Holmes came, our jittery cigar smoker,
- 34:04Speaker 5: maybe to ask Graves not to prosecute on a bad check,
- 34:08Speaker 5: to stall for time. Graves went to find the check,
- 34:12Speaker 5: and he couldn't, because it was on the other side
- 34:14Speaker 5: of the wall in his bathtub, and Holmes thought he
- 34:17Speaker 5: was trying to put something.
- 34:18Speaker 4: Over on him. And you think Combs shot him? Killed
- 34:22Speaker 4: him for $ 12, 000?
- 34:23Speaker 5: It's been done before.
- 34:26Speaker 4: And what about our redhead?
- 34:28Speaker 2: Bricky, it's the man.
- 34:29Speaker 5: It's gotta be.
- 34:30Speaker 4: I think it's the woman. We'll have to split up.
- 34:34Speaker 5: No, let's do it together. The way we started. It's
- 34:36Speaker 5: too late.
- 34:36Speaker 4: We can't follow them one at a time. Our deadline's
- 34:38Speaker 4: at dawn, Quinn, and we've got less than three hours.
- 34:41Speaker 5: That bus to Glen Falls.
- 34:43Speaker 4: The last bus. Remember that. It's the last bus for you.
- 34:49Speaker 4: And for me, too.
- 34:51Speaker 5: Then we'll be saying goodbye, Bricky?
- 34:54Speaker 6: Yes, Quinn.
- 34:56Speaker 4: Goodbye till dawn. We went down into the empty streets
- 35:08Speaker 4: without talking to each other again. And I went one
- 35:11Speaker 4: way and Quinn went the other. In ten minutes, we
- 35:14Speaker 4: were blocks apart. Maybe miles. but it seemed to me
- 35:18Speaker 4: that I was still at his side, still with him,
- 35:21Speaker 4: as he finally found an all-night drugstore and went back
- 35:24Speaker 4: into a booth. I knew he'd dial all the Arthur
- 35:27Speaker 4: Holmeses in the book and talk to a lot of angry,
- 35:30Speaker 4: sleepy people, and then he'd find the right one, the
- 35:34Speaker 4: Arthur Holmes we wanted. What would Quinn do then? What
- 35:39Speaker 4: would he say? What would happen?
- 35:51Speaker 5: Hello?
- 35:52Speaker 2: Yes.
- 35:53Speaker 5: Is this Mr. Arthur Holmes?
- 35:56Speaker 2: Who is this? Well, Mr.
- 35:58Speaker 5: Holmes, you don't know me.
- 35:59Speaker 2: Who is this that wants to speak to Mr. Holmes?
- 36:01Speaker 5: The name isn't known to you, Mr.
- 36:03Speaker 2: Holmes, but... What makes you think this is Mr. Holmes?
- 36:06Speaker 2: And are you aware that it's almost four o'clock in
- 36:08Speaker 2: the morning? What do you want?
- 36:11Speaker 5: I have a check here that belongs to Mr. Holmes.
- 36:13Speaker 5: Will you let me talk to him?
- 36:16Speaker 2: You're speaking to him.
- 36:18Speaker 5: It's made out to Stephen Graves, and I have it
- 36:20Speaker 5: right here in my hand. mind it i found it
- 36:23Speaker 5: on the seat of a taxi it must have slipped
- 36:25Speaker 5: out of someone's wallet who.
- 36:26Speaker 2: Was with you when you found it.
- 36:27Speaker 5: No one just me by myself.
- 36:30Speaker 2: Whom did you show it to afterwards.
- 36:33Speaker 5: No one who's with you now no one i swear
- 36:37Speaker 5: and you.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Called because you thought i.
- 36:39Speaker 5: Might want it back that's right i'm sorry your time
- 36:43Speaker 5: is up deposit another nickel please shall i hang up
- 36:46Speaker 5: mr holmes.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Tell me, what's your name?
- 36:54Speaker 5: Quinn Williams.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Tell me something about yourself. What do you do? Are
- 36:59Speaker 2: you a married man?
- 37:00Speaker 5: No, I'm single. I live by myself.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Not even a roommate? Nobody.
- 37:05Speaker 5: Strictly lone wolf.
- 37:06Speaker 2: I'd like to see that check, Quinn. Maybe I can
- 37:08Speaker 2: do something for you.
- 37:09Speaker 5: Fair enough.
- 37:10Speaker 2: There's a little bar called Owen's down on 51st. Do
- 37:13Speaker 2: you know it?
- 37:14Speaker 5: I know where it is.
- 37:15Speaker 2: It'll take me about 15 minutes to get dressed and
- 37:17Speaker 2: get down there. Is 15 minutes good for you?
- 37:19Speaker 5: Just fine, Mr.
- 37:20Speaker 4: Holmes.
- 37:21Speaker 2: I'll see you there.
- 37:24Speaker 5: You're a cagey boy, Mr.
- 37:26Speaker 8: Holmes.
- 37:27Speaker 5: But you swallowed.
- 37:28Speaker 8: When?
- 37:40Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 37:41Speaker 2: Over here in the booth.
- 37:42Speaker 4: Oh.
- 37:43Speaker 5: Good evening, Mr.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Holmes. Good evening. Sit down, won't you? Yeah, I will.
- 37:50Speaker 2: You're right on time. Sure.
- 37:52Speaker 5: Sure.
- 37:54Speaker 2: So are you.
- 37:55Speaker 13: As a drink for you. I had water ahead, so
- 37:58Speaker 13: I'd be allowed to stay in here. It's past closing time.
- 38:01Speaker 2: Thanks. What's the matter, son? Nothing.
- 38:07Speaker 5: It'd just be funny, that's all. Funny and kind of
- 38:11Speaker 5: corny if you'd slipped a little something into this.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Take mine, then. I haven't put it to my mouth yet.
- 38:20Speaker 5: I think I will.
- 38:21Speaker 8: Huh?
- 38:23Speaker 2: Bottoms up.
- 38:25Speaker 5: Bottoms up. My car's around the corner.
- 38:32Speaker 13: Would you rather talk about it there?
- 38:34Speaker 5: Yeah, I would. I think we ought to be alone.
- 38:38Speaker 2: That's easy, son. We can be alone.
- 38:53Speaker 5: That's enough driving.
- 38:54Speaker 9: Pull up.
- 38:55Speaker 13: I just thought we'd coast a bit. We can't sit
- 38:58Speaker 13: talking at the curb at this hour. We'll have a
- 38:59Speaker 13: cop down on us sticking his nose into the car.
- 39:02Speaker 5: What's wrong with that?
- 39:04Speaker 2: I don't know. Do you?
- 39:07Speaker 5: I was asking you.
- 39:09Speaker 2: However, if you want to pull up....
- 39:18Speaker 13: The East River. A mighty mysterious place at this time
- 39:22Speaker 13: of day. You're pretty close to the edge, aren't you?
- 39:25Speaker 13: The wheels are blocked. You're not nervous, are you?
- 39:30Speaker 5: No, I'm not.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Now, about that check.
- 39:35Speaker 5: I didn't find that check in a cab, Mr.
- 39:37Speaker 2: Holmes.
- 39:38Speaker 5: I found it in Stephen Graves' house, where he's lying
- 39:42Speaker 5: right now on the floor, dead.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Stephen dead?
- 39:47Speaker 5: And your cigar is still in the room with him,
- 39:49Speaker 5: chewed to a pulp. A Corona, like the one you're
- 39:52Speaker 5: smoking right now. You should have taken it with you, Mr. Holmes,
- 39:56Speaker 5: after you'd killed him. You seem to know a good
- 40:00Speaker 5: deal about this.
- 40:02Speaker 2: A little.
- 40:03Speaker 5: Just enough to know who the killer is.
- 40:05Speaker 2: I feel a little sorry for you.
- 40:10Speaker 13: I didn't know you were as young as you are.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Over the phone. What have I.
- 40:18Speaker 5: What have I got to do with it?
- 40:20Speaker 13: You're having a lot of trouble with your eyes, aren't you?
- 40:23Speaker 13: Lights on the dashboard have got rings around them, haven't they?
- 40:25Speaker 13: Like big soap bubbles.
- 40:29Speaker 5: What are you talking about?
- 40:30Speaker 13: Say, you talk too much. You've talked yourself into the grave.
- 40:36Speaker 13: I would have believed you about finding that check in
- 40:38Speaker 13: a taxi. You would have gone to sleep in the car,
- 40:41Speaker 13: and when you woke up, you wouldn't have the check
- 40:43Speaker 13: on you anymore. But you'd have had a $ 10 bill
- 40:46Speaker 13: in your pocket, too. sugarcoat the experience. Head weighs too much,
- 40:51Speaker 13: doesn't it? Too heavy for your neck.
- 40:54Speaker 2: My head.
- 40:55Speaker 13: You should have stuck to your own drink, son. You
- 40:58Speaker 13: were suspicious, but not suspicious enough. You took the wrong glass.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Me? I'm a chess player. You know what chess is?
- 41:08Speaker 13: It's figuring out your opponent's move before he makes it.
- 41:13Speaker 5: That's a funny thing. The way my head's Like a
- 41:19Speaker 5: solid rock.
- 41:21Speaker 13: You're going to sleep here in the car. Then you're
- 41:25Speaker 13: going into the river without a mark on you. But
- 41:28Speaker 13: I'll take the check before I dump you. It's probably
- 41:30Speaker 13: in your shoe. It's about where your type of youngster
- 41:34Speaker 13: would think was a clever hiding place for it.
- 41:36Speaker 5: Just clear my head. And then kick. Kick.
- 41:44Speaker 13: Trying to kick out the glass, son? You haven't the
- 41:49Speaker 13: strength of a kick left in you. No, it's all over.
- 41:55Speaker 13: That's water in front of us. That even black line
- 41:59Speaker 13: you see. Right over the hubcap. You can't even move,
- 42:05Speaker 13: can you? That's right. Make a lazy pass with your
- 42:09Speaker 13: hand like you're brushing away flies. That's about all you're
- 42:13Speaker 13: able to do.
- 42:15Speaker 2: In a minute... You won't even be able to do that.
- 42:21Speaker 2: There go your eyes. Down, down, down.
- 42:30Speaker 5: You won't get away with this, mister. Ricky knows. There
- 42:34Speaker 5: are two of us. Not just one.
- 42:37Speaker 2: One.
- 42:48Speaker 4: And so I walked away from Quinn, and I was
- 42:51Speaker 4: alone again. I'd met him only a few hours before,
- 42:56Speaker 4: and with him I'd met my past and my home
- 42:59Speaker 4: and everything I loved and wanted. And now I was
- 43:03Speaker 4: alone again. Somewhere in this sleeping city, Quinn was after
- 43:08Speaker 4: his man, and I was after my woman, my redhead,
- 43:13Speaker 4: my long-stemmed American beauty. the nightclub parakeet was dead. Dead,
- 43:21Speaker 4: but not quite cold. Just in the process of giving
- 43:25Speaker 4: up the ghost. Every other minute, a solitary figure would
- 43:29Speaker 4: come out and walk away. Someone who earned a living inside.
- 43:34Speaker 4: This was the five o'clock in the afternoon of the
- 43:36Speaker 4: nightclub workers, whose clock goes in the opposite direction to
- 43:40Speaker 4: that of the rest of the world. And what did
- 43:42Speaker 4: I have to go on? A redhead blackmailer who had
- 43:47Speaker 4: quickly scribbled a note to a man. And that kind
- 43:50Speaker 4: of woman doesn't ordinarily carry around pencil and paper in
- 43:53Speaker 4: her purse. She sends messages with her eyes and her hips.
- 43:58Speaker 4: If she wants a pencil, she's got to borrow.
- 44:01Speaker 6: It from the help.
- 44:05Speaker 4: Excuse me. Huh? What's the matter? You work here, don't you?
- 44:08Speaker 4: I'm in the checkroom till something better turns up.
- 44:10Speaker 9: Why?
- 44:11Speaker 4: Well, I wondered, did my friend in a light green dress,
- 44:14Speaker 4: a redhead, did she borrow a pencil from you tonight?
- 44:16Speaker 4: It works the other way around, honey. The men take
- 44:18Speaker 4: out their pencils and give me names and addresses and
- 44:21Speaker 4: telephone numbers. I got a fistful. But didn't a woman...
- 44:23Speaker 4: It's no.
- 44:23Speaker 5: Dice, honey.
- 44:25Speaker 9: I don't even see any women in my stall.
- 44:27Speaker 11: Oh.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Another long day.
- 44:33Speaker 4: My feet swell up all the time.
- 44:34Speaker 5: You want to try Epsom salts? Water as hot as
- 44:36Speaker 5: you can stand.
- 44:37Speaker 4: Excuse me.
- 44:38Speaker 5: Well, my name's Jerry. But don't let the name stand
- 44:42Speaker 5: in your way.
- 44:43Speaker 4: I'm looking for my friend, a redhead in a light
- 44:46Speaker 4: green dress. Did she borrow a pencil from you tonight?
- 44:49Speaker 5: Not at my end of the bar. How about it, Frank? Sure,
- 44:51Speaker 5: Joan Bassett. About midnight.
- 44:53Speaker 7: She's always borrowing something and forgetting to give it back.
- 44:58Speaker 10: How that girl forgets.
- 44:59Speaker 4: That's the way Joanie is. Do you... Do you know
- 45:02Speaker 4: where I can find her?
- 45:03Speaker 5: Well, try to Concord.
- 45:05Speaker 3: That was the last address.
- 45:07Speaker 4: But she's probably moved by now. Thanks, fellas.
- 45:10Speaker 5: Can't I do anything for you?
- 45:12Speaker 4: Another time, Jerry.
- 45:14Speaker 5: Okay, that's a promise. Another time.
- 45:26Speaker 6: What can I do for you?
- 45:28Speaker 4: Be friendly, Pop. Say hello. You know... That's better.
- 45:31Speaker 6: What do you want, a room?
- 45:33Speaker 2: We're full up.
- 45:34Speaker 4: What room's my girlfriend got? I want to run up
- 45:36Speaker 4: and tell her something. You know, Joanie.
- 45:38Speaker 6: Joan Bassett?
- 45:39Speaker 4: Yeah, Joan Bassett. Only we don't have to be so formal.
- 45:42Speaker 10: She's in 409, sugar. Hey, wait a minute.
- 45:44Speaker 6: I'll try it.
- 45:45Speaker 4: Oh, skip that. She don't have to put on no
- 45:46Speaker 4: ears with me. Who's she kidding? I know she's two
- 45:48Speaker 4: weeks behind no rent.
- 45:49Speaker 2: All right.
- 45:50Speaker 6: If you know that well, go on up.
- 46:10Speaker 4: What do you want?
- 46:11Speaker 5: You.
- 46:12Speaker 4: I want to talk to you.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 46:14Speaker 11: Well, just stand out there a minute and tell me
- 46:16Speaker 11: what about.
- 46:17Speaker 4: We got a friend in common, you and I.
- 46:19Speaker 5: It's possible.
- 46:21Speaker 9: Go on.
- 46:22Speaker 4: This friend's name is Stephen Graves. Um, suppose you come
- 46:28Speaker 4: in a minute. I'll hear what's on your mind.
- 46:29Speaker 5: Sure.
- 46:30Speaker 4: I thought that might do it. Do you have to
- 46:35Speaker 4: lock the door? Yeah, I think I do. Whatever you
- 46:38Speaker 4: think best.
- 46:39Speaker 11: Begin with your name. You can put me down as
- 46:42Speaker 11: Carolyn Miller. All right, Carolyn Miller. Now about Stephen Graves.
- 46:47Speaker 11: What makes you think I know him?
- 46:49Speaker 4: Stop being polite. You know him. Did he mention me
- 46:51Speaker 4: to you?
- 46:51Speaker 7: No.
- 46:53Speaker 4: He wasn't doing any mentioning of anybody. He wasn't doing anything.
- 46:57Speaker 4: You been over to see him lately? Very lately. I
- 47:02Speaker 4: just came from there now. How did you find him?
- 47:07Speaker 4: I found him dead.
- 47:10Speaker 6: I see.
- 47:13Speaker 4: Oh, that tap in the kitchen is loose again. Excuse
- 47:15Speaker 4: me a minute while I tighten it. I'd known we
- 47:22Speaker 4: weren't alone the moment I came into that room. And
- 47:24Speaker 4: I knew that faucet in the kitchen was a signal
- 47:26Speaker 4: for a quick conference. It was my chance. Maybe I
- 47:29Speaker 4: had a minute, maybe only 30 seconds. There was only
- 47:31Speaker 4: time for one thing, the open handbag on the dresser.
- 47:35Speaker 4: Nothing there.
- 47:36Speaker 9: Lipstick.
- 47:37Speaker 4: Powder, usual junk, and then an unpaid hotel bill for $ 17. 89
- 47:44Speaker 4: from this place, the Concord. No good, worthless, and my
- 47:46Speaker 4: time was up, yet something screamed at me to hold
- 47:49Speaker 4: on to it, to slip it inside my stocking high
- 47:52Speaker 4: up and to get back into my chair. Well, that's done. Now,
- 48:00Speaker 4: where were we? With Stephen Graves. Oh, yeah.
- 48:03Speaker 11: Did you go up there alone or did you have
- 48:06Speaker 11: somebody with you?
- 48:07Speaker 8: Alone.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Alone.
- 48:08Speaker 4: I don't take my grandmother with me when I'm visiting.
- 48:10Speaker 4: I see. Somebody stop you at the door and tell you?
- 48:12Speaker 4: Is that how you found out? Cops and people hanging around?
- 48:15Speaker 4: Lots of excitement? No one knows it. I found him alone.
- 48:18Speaker 4: I had a key to the house that he'd given me.
- 48:21Speaker 4: I went up and there he was.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Dead.
- 48:25Speaker 4: What'd you do?
- 48:25Speaker 11: Holler bloody murder and bring everyone down on the place?
- 48:27Speaker 4: I got out of there fast and quiet. I don't
- 48:29Speaker 4: want to be mixed up in it. Smart girl. And
- 48:34Speaker 4: all this happened just a little while ago, huh? Yeah.
- 48:36Speaker 4: Nobody knows yet but you?
- 48:37Speaker 2: Me?
- 48:39Speaker 4: And you? Did you come here alone? All alone. Everything
- 48:43Speaker 4: I do, I do alone. I guess I've hit the jackpot. Yeah,
- 48:48Speaker 4: you sure have, baby. You've hit it hard. Make it tight, Griff,
- 48:53Speaker 4: so she can't make any noise.
- 48:54Speaker 6: It's tight.
- 48:55Speaker 2: Don't worry about that.
- 48:56Speaker 4: Well, Miss Carolyn Miller, you're in trouble now.
- 48:59Speaker 6: You tell her.
- 49:00Speaker 11: So Stephen Graves is dead and you felt a little
- 49:02Speaker 11: nosy about it, huh? You wanted the details. All right,
- 49:05Speaker 11: you can have them. You seem to have known him
- 49:08Speaker 11: pretty well. Maybe he told you, did he? Did he
- 49:10Speaker 11: tell you about his kid brother who married a tavern
- 49:12Speaker 11: hostess back in Boston? Did he tell you what that
- 49:15Speaker 11: did to the fine old family name when this girl
- 49:17Speaker 11: began asking for money?
- 49:19Speaker 4: When she came to New York and began... asking Stephen
- 49:20Speaker 4: for money?
- 49:22Speaker 11: Did he tell you that he paid and paid and
- 49:24Speaker 11: finally decided to stop paying so this girl and her
- 49:26Speaker 11: friend had to pay him a little visit tonight to
- 49:29Speaker 11: try to persuade him?
- 49:29Speaker 6: Did he tell you that?
- 49:32Speaker 4: Did he tell you what happened when he couldn't be persuaded?
- 49:37Speaker 6: No.
- 49:38Speaker 4: No, he didn't tell you that. Because he wasn't talking
- 49:41Speaker 4: by then. By then he was dead.
- 49:44Speaker 7: That's enough. You want to spend the night at it?
- 49:46Speaker 4: All right. Well, what's the play now?
- 49:49Speaker 6: Don't you figure we ought to.
- 49:50Speaker 4: No, not here in the room. That's begging for it.
- 49:53Speaker 7: You don't understand. I don't mean chop-chop, that kind of stuff.
- 49:55Speaker 7: I mean, we're four flights up. That ought to be enough.
- 49:59Speaker 7: The three of us get to drinking up here. She
- 50:00Speaker 7: goes over to the window to try to open it
- 50:02Speaker 7: for a little air. It jams, so she's got to
- 50:05Speaker 7: push it.
- 50:05Speaker 4: There's always a follow-up. It's a little messy.
- 50:08Speaker 6: Let me take care of this.
- 50:09Speaker 11: Yeah, like you took care of the other. When I
- 50:11Speaker 11: told you just to throw a scare into him so
- 50:12Speaker 11: he'd come across. Well, some scare you threw at him, Griff.
- 50:16Speaker 6: Yeah, I scared him right out of his skin, right out.
- 50:18Speaker 5: Of his heart.
- 50:19Speaker 4: I don't want you to be so impulsive this time.
- 50:20Speaker 7: Well, then let's blow. We'll stuff her in the closet.
- 50:24Speaker 7: Backs up against a dead wall so she'll never be heard.
- 50:27Speaker 7: It'll be days before they get around to busting the
- 50:28Speaker 7: door down.
- 50:28Speaker 4: Yeah, we'll be far away by then.
- 50:30Speaker 2: Yeah, far away.
- 50:32Speaker 4: Okay, I can pack in ten minutes.
- 50:33Speaker 6: Yes, I'll give you a hand.
- 50:35Speaker 4: Wait a minute. I'm missing that hotel bill. It must
- 50:38Speaker 4: have fallen somewhere on the floor.
- 50:39Speaker 6: Oh, don't worry about that. He can make up a
- 50:41Speaker 6: new one for you down at the desk.
- 50:42Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, sure.
- 50:42Speaker 5: That's right.
- 50:43Speaker 6: Well, shall we get her out of the way first?
- 50:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:48Speaker 4: Hang Carolyn Miller in the closet.
- 50:50Speaker 9: Oh, see, Daisy.
- 50:51Speaker 4: Make her comfortable, Griff.
- 50:54Speaker 2: Sure.
- 50:54Speaker 4: We want to be extra nice to her because there's
- 50:56Speaker 4: a little fresh air in there.
- 50:57Speaker 5: There'll only be a minute. Griff!
- 50:59Speaker 6: What's the matter?
- 51:00Speaker 4: Put her down.
- 51:00Speaker 10: What do you mean?
- 51:01Speaker 4: Put her down, quick! I ought to have my head examined.
- 51:04Speaker 5: You mean you slipped on something?
- 51:05Speaker 4: Yeah, forgot. We both clean forgot. What was it tipped
- 51:09Speaker 4: her off to me? She didn't pull my name and
- 51:11Speaker 4: address out of a hat.
- 51:12Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 51:13Speaker 4: Get that gag off her. You try to scream and
- 51:16Speaker 4: I'll dent you. I won't scream.
- 51:19Speaker 9: Now talk.
- 51:20Speaker 4: How'd you know I knew him? How'd you know where
- 51:22Speaker 4: to find me?
- 51:23Speaker 11: I'm going to let you have it and I'm going
- 51:25Speaker 11: to keep letting you have it until you answer.
- 51:28Speaker 4: You dropped your hotel bill over there. I found it
- 51:32Speaker 4: lying in the room with him.
- 51:34Speaker 6: I ought to slap you down to the soles of
- 51:36Speaker 6: your feet.
- 51:36Speaker 5: You left your calling card.
- 51:37Speaker 6: That's what you did.
- 51:38Speaker 4: No, she's lying. I swear I saw it in my
- 51:39Speaker 4: handbag after I got back.
- 51:40Speaker 5: Did you take it out to show him? Answer me,
- 51:42Speaker 5: did you? Sure.
- 51:44Speaker 11: While you were waiting downstairs, it was part of the
- 51:46Speaker 11: build-up to show him how bad I needed money, but
- 51:48Speaker 11: I know I put it back again.
- 51:50Speaker 5: You think you know.
- 51:50Speaker 9: Well, I.
- 51:52Speaker 4: Oh, I'm almost positive. It fell out. It was for $ 17. 89.
- 51:56Speaker 4: It had past you stamped on it in purple ink.
- 52:02Speaker 4: It even had your room number on it.
- 52:03Speaker 5: And what did you do with it?
- 52:04Speaker 4: Did you bring it with you? I left it where
- 52:07Speaker 4: it was. I was afraid to touch anything.
- 52:12Speaker 6: We'll have to go back and get it.
- 52:14Speaker 5: All right, we will.
- 52:16Speaker 11: We'll take her with us. Fix it to look like
- 52:18Speaker 11: she did it to him. What you want to do
- 52:20Speaker 11: in the first place, Griff, why don't you do it
- 52:22Speaker 11: over there? Give him a double header to figure out.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 52:26Speaker 4: Oh, it's the only way. Rub out this detour by
- 52:29Speaker 4: finishing her off where she started from.
- 52:31Speaker 6: All right. Come on, Carolyn Miller.
- 52:35Speaker 10: We're going for a little ride.
- 52:48Speaker 4: And so I went back into Stephen Graves' house for
- 52:50Speaker 4: the second time that night. They pushed me ahead of
- 52:54Speaker 4: them in the darkness, whispering to each other not to
- 52:57Speaker 4: use any lights yet, just as Quinn and I had
- 53:00Speaker 4: done a few hours before. Or was it a few
- 53:03Speaker 4: years before? Then we were in the study And the
- 53:08Speaker 4: lights were snapped on And the dead man was still
- 53:11Speaker 4: on the floor And nobody stepped forward to say Bricky,
- 53:17Speaker 4: is that you? No He wasn't there Quinn wasn't there
- 53:24Speaker 4: Waiting to help me To save me.
- 53:27Speaker 7: Let's do what we have to do and get out
- 53:29Speaker 7: fast No, not yet Something else first.
- 53:35Speaker 9: Well, you.
- 53:37Speaker 4: Where is it? Where's that hotel bill? Where'd you say
- 53:41Speaker 4: you saw it? Over there by him is where I said.
- 53:47Speaker 4: And you believed me. Then you didn't. You lied.
- 53:51Speaker 6: I lied.
- 53:54Speaker 2: Where is it?
- 53:55Speaker 5: Where have you got it?
- 53:56Speaker 4: That's your little problem.
- 53:59Speaker 6: Let me have that gun.
- 54:00Speaker 2: I'll do it.
- 54:01Speaker 4: Here it is, Griff.
- 54:03Speaker 6: Get away from him.
- 54:04Speaker 2: Move over.
- 54:05Speaker 7: Stand still, Carolyn Miller. I want to come real close.
- 54:11Speaker 7: I want them to worry about whether it's suicide.
- 54:14Speaker 4: Yes, Griff. I'll stand still.
- 54:20Speaker 6: Good girl, Carolyn. Good girl.
- 54:28Speaker 4: It didn't hurt. It didn't hurt at all. And I
- 54:32Speaker 4: opened my eyes to find out why. Griff stood in
- 54:35Speaker 4: the middle of the room, his face contorted, an arm
- 54:37Speaker 4: squeezing hard around his neck. And behind his face was
- 54:40Speaker 4: another face, a face I knew, Quinn's face, the boy
- 54:43Speaker 4: next door, fighting for me, fighting to save me. Then
- 54:46Speaker 4: Quinn went down, all lopsided, and Quinn was on top,
- 54:49Speaker 4: punching at him again and again, and Joan was racing
- 54:52Speaker 4: across the room with an andy and raising her hand.
- 54:54Speaker 4: I never played football as a little girl, but on
- 54:56Speaker 4: this night I decided it was time to try.
- 54:58Speaker 8: The End.
- 55:15Speaker 2: Ricky. Ricky, darling. Quinn.
- 55:19Speaker 5: Are you all right?
- 55:21Speaker 4: Somebody's ringing church bells in my head.
- 55:24Speaker 5: Oh, you knocked yourself out with that flying tackle. Quinn.
- 55:28Speaker 4: Quinn, what happened?
- 55:29Speaker 3: Are they.
- 55:31Speaker 2: Oh.
- 55:32Speaker 5: Yeah, they're both asleep, Ricky. As sound as can be.
- 55:36Speaker 4: I see you've wrapped them up nicely.
- 55:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I had to tear up a few good sheets
- 55:42Speaker 5: to do it, but I don't think Mr. Graves would
- 55:44Speaker 5: have minded.
- 55:45Speaker 4: I'd given up, Quinn. I thought I'd beat you back here,
- 55:49Speaker 4: and I'd given up.
- 55:52Speaker 2: Oh, Bricky.
- 55:55Speaker 5: I saw them coming in with you outside on the street.
- 55:57Speaker 5: I was watching from one of the front windows. And
- 55:59Speaker 5: something about the way you were walking between them, sort
- 56:02Speaker 5: of stiff, told me they had a gun on you.
- 56:05Speaker 5: So I backed up into the bathroom and laid low.
- 56:07Speaker 4: They're the ones, Quinn. They did it.
- 56:09Speaker 2: I know.
- 56:10Speaker 4: And we can go now. It's a quarter to six.
- 56:13Speaker 4: We can catch that bus for home.
- 56:15Speaker 5: There's one more thing to be done, Ricky. It'll only
- 56:18Speaker 5: take a minute. And then you and I aren't going
- 56:23Speaker 5: to have any more to worry about. Is this the police?
- 56:30Speaker 5: I want to report a murder.
- 56:32Speaker 2: Oh, Quinn.
- 56:33Speaker 5: Stephen Graves, in his home on East 71st Street. There
- 56:37Speaker 5: are two people tied up in the same room with
- 56:38Speaker 5: the body, and they're the killers... You'll find a special
- 56:41Speaker 5: delivery letter in the desk from Graves' younger brother, and
- 56:44Speaker 5: that'll tell you the reason for the killing.
- 56:47Speaker 2: What?
- 56:48Speaker 5: No, this isn't any rib. I wish it was.
- 56:53Speaker 2: Me?
- 56:55Speaker 5: Just a guy who happened to be passing by.
- 56:58Speaker 4: We can take their car. He left his keys in it.
- 56:59Speaker 4: Come on, Quinn, hurry.
- 57:00Speaker 8: Come on.
- 57:15Speaker 5: We'll make it, don't you worry, Bricky I'm not worried.
- 57:19Speaker 4: I know we will What happened to you tonight? Did
- 57:23Speaker 4: you find Holmes?
- 57:24Speaker 2: Yeah And?
- 57:26Speaker 5: And he tried to kill me When? It was your
- 57:29Speaker 5: name that saved me, Bricky I called out your name
- 57:32Speaker 5: I told him you were in on this with me
- 57:34Speaker 5: And he changed his mind in a.
- 57:36Speaker 4: Hurry Then we saved each other That's right What about
- 57:41Speaker 4: the check? How did it figure?
- 57:43Speaker 5: Well, Holmes was caught short when he wrote that check
- 57:45Speaker 5: And Graves got sore when the bank returned it. They
- 57:48Speaker 5: talked it over tonight, and it ended up with Graves
- 57:50Speaker 5: giving him another day to raise the money. The reason
- 57:53Speaker 5: Holmes was so jittery was that the check seemed to
- 57:55Speaker 5: have disappeared. He didn't know what Graves might be pulling.
- 57:59Speaker 5: And of course, Graves wasn't pulling anything with that check
- 58:01Speaker 5: lying in the bottom.
- 58:02Speaker 2: Of his bathtub.
- 58:03Speaker 4: You told Holmes how it got there?
- 58:05Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 58:06Speaker 5: And look what I've got.
- 58:09Speaker 4: Two hundred dollar.
- 58:11Speaker 2: Quinn!
- 58:12Speaker 5: No, I didn't steal it. After he decided he wouldn't
- 58:16Speaker 5: kill me, Holmes and I got very chummy. He said
- 58:20Speaker 5: we'd both made a mistake in the same night. Me
- 58:24Speaker 5: breaking into a safe and him with his bad check.
- 58:27Speaker 5: He'd slipped me a pill earlier in the evening, and
- 58:29Speaker 5: now he was walking me around to sober me up.
- 58:32Speaker 5: That's when he gave me the money. A nest egg
- 58:35Speaker 5: for me, he said. I could send it back to
- 58:37Speaker 5: him a little at a time later on.
- 58:39Speaker 4: We'll send it back, Quinn.
- 58:41Speaker 2: We, Bricky?
- 58:43Speaker 4: We're in this together. aren't we?
- 58:46Speaker 5: Yes, Bricky, we are.
- 58:47Speaker 4: Oh, look, Quinn, we made it. We're in time. The
- 58:51Speaker 4: bus is still there.
