- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Here on the podcast, we've been talking about writing habits for the last few days.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And today we're going to dive into one of the hardest yet most important practices to develop when you're building a writing habit.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: So here we go with habit number six, which is keep writing even if you think it's bad.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Maybe this has happened to you.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: It's certainly happened to me before.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: You write something and you don't think it's that great.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: However, somebody else loves it.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: It might be a blog post, a social media post, a podcast, an email, or an article or something else, but you write it, you don't think it's that great, but people really, really like it.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: And that points to a principle that is baffling, but it's true.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: We're not always the best judge of the quality of our work.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: As somebody once said, what you think of me is none of my business.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: And there's some truth to that when it comes to how other people perceive our writing.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Whenever we're writing, we tend to judge it and critique it, but it's important that we realize we don't always know when something is going to resonate with people.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: In other words, it's almost impossible to be objective about our own work.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: So keep on writing, even when you don't think it's very good.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: William Faulkner said, get it down, take chances.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: It may be bad, but it's the only way you can do anything really good.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Now, plus, when you keep writing, it's the only way to actually finish something.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: So if you're always in editing and revision mode and you're never in creation mode, it's going to take forever to get something done.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: So just keep on writing and you can go back and revise it later.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: I want you to ask yourself, do you feel you are objective about your writing?
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: And I want you to really honestly think about that.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: If you're not objective, maybe it's time to get a little bit more objective and just keep on writing, even if you think it's not always that great.
