- 0:08Speaker 1: bus shortly after he landed his job. Coach dived into
- 0:11Speaker 1: his decision is bringing his dad, Bill Callahan on board
- 0:14Speaker 1: as the old line coach and shares how the conversation
- 0:16Speaker 1: played out behind the scenes. We talked through his coaching journey,

- 0:37Speaker 2: Before we jumped on here, we were on the other
- 0:39Speaker 2: side talking about Coach Bill Callahan's individual yes and Taylor
- 0:44Speaker 2: was asking Coach Brian, do they call you coach Brian
- 0:47Speaker 2: or did they call you coach Callahan?
- 0:50Speaker 3: You want to know most of them call most of
- 0:51Speaker 3: them call me.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Cali CALLI Yeah, okay, I've got a little extra English
- 0:55Speaker 1: on it. I like that.
- 0:56Speaker 3: That is nice. It's it's what most people have called
- 0:59Speaker 3: me most of my coach career. Yeah, and but yeah,
- 1:02Speaker 3: coach works, Cali works right, well, weird people don't call
- 1:05Speaker 3: me Brian very often. That's a weird one for me.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Okay, mister Calli it is. Then. Yeah, they was.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Talking to Cali about the individual of coach Brian Callahan,
- 1:13Speaker 2: and I was like, oh yeah. Sometimes in our individual
- 1:16Speaker 2: linebacker drills and Washington, I'd be like, all right, water
- 1:19Speaker 2: break and then we'd be like, let's go watch the
- 1:21Speaker 2: Let's go watch the hogs is Indy and we just
- 1:23Speaker 2: stand across the field and watch them. They just be
- 1:24Speaker 2: dying the whole time. It's so funny, Brod, he's coach
- 1:29Speaker 2: Collin's a grinder he gets out of you. Coach Bill Callahan, Yeah,
- 1:31Speaker 2: Coach Bill Kellyan.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, what was go ahead?
- 1:34Speaker 2: I was just gonna say, whatever timeframes that you get
- 1:38Speaker 2: with any constraints, you're juicing as much all the seconds
- 1:41Speaker 2: you're getting it out of the boys.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Has he been like that always as long as you can? Always?
- 1:45Speaker 3: Yeah, always, He's always been full till all the time.
- 1:50Speaker 3: And that's how you get I mean, that's how guys
- 1:51Speaker 3: get better. I mean you, like we were watching yesterday.
- 1:53Speaker 3: I think they might have done forty or fifty different
- 1:58Speaker 3: past sets, and the filmed every one of them, and
- 2:00Speaker 3: he cuts every one of them up to each guy,
- 2:02Speaker 3: so you could watch all your reps for the whole
- 2:04Speaker 3: day and see how you progressed during a day and
- 2:06Speaker 3: got better. But yeah, it's every usable second he uses.
- 2:10Speaker 3: It doesn't ever stop.
- 2:11Speaker 1: What's his philosophy on pass sets because a lot of
- 2:13Speaker 1: coaches come in they're like, we do it one way
- 2:15Speaker 1: and one way only? Is he let the guys the
- 2:17Speaker 1: boys do what they want.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Well, he coaches the technique that he's looking for. But
- 2:22Speaker 3: there's a lot of variants in the set, the set angles,
- 2:25Speaker 3: if you're jump setting versus a he calls a congo
- 2:27Speaker 3: set versus an angle set. There's there's all kinds of
- 2:30Speaker 3: variation that they use all the time and there is
- 2:33Speaker 3: some for like That's one of the things that I
- 2:34Speaker 3: think he does great is he's able to have a
- 2:37Speaker 3: conversation with a guy maybe that's played ten years, and say,
- 2:40Speaker 3: well have you done it? And find ways to work
- 2:43Speaker 3: with them on what fits as long as they're still
- 2:45Speaker 3: getting the job done. Yeah, he's open to listen in
- 2:48Speaker 3: a guy's talk, but he's a very particular way about
- 2:50Speaker 3: how he coaches it.
- 2:51Speaker 1: That's that's so awesome, how the old dogs are willing
- 2:54Speaker 1: to still learn and do all that. Because you get
- 2:56Speaker 1: some of those old old school cats, they'll come in
- 2:58Speaker 1: and be like, you do it this way and this way.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Only one guy. Have you ever met Russ Grim?
- 3:03Speaker 3: I have not met him. I know him, but I don't.
- 3:05Speaker 3: I can't say that no more.
- 3:06Speaker 1: I was with Russ for two years, the greatest offensive
- 3:09Speaker 1: line coach I've ever had in my entire life. Yeah,
- 3:11Speaker 1: and he comes in the first meeting and he's like,
- 3:12Speaker 1: talk to me about stutter. I don't know if you
- 3:13Speaker 1: guys have stuttered open open side pole scheme. And I'm like, okay,
- 3:17Speaker 1: if it's a three technique, reduce to the mic and
- 3:19Speaker 1: if not, then you're this. He's like, oh, deuce or
- 3:22Speaker 1: through the mic, that's it. I was like, all right,
- 3:25Speaker 1: what step. He's like, just get to the mic or
- 3:27Speaker 1: do the deuce. And he just like instead of having
- 3:29Speaker 1: to over explain every small detail, he was like, just
- 3:32Speaker 1: know what your job is and go get that done
- 3:34Speaker 1: the best way you can possibly do it. That I'll
- 3:35Speaker 1: help you along the way, and he was huge for
- 3:38Speaker 1: my career. Yeah, keep it simple, stupid.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Yeah, there's something to do that. Yeah, there's something to
- 3:42Speaker 3: do that. It's I think the cool thing that fort
- 3:44Speaker 3: like old coaches and my dad's not that old, I guess,
- 3:47Speaker 3: but he's kind of old enough. He's older.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Yeah, he's old gentleman.
- 3:50Speaker 3: And Uh, what's been super impressive about him is his
- 3:54Speaker 3: ability to go from like being that old, like the
- 3:56Speaker 3: old old school style of coaching, and he's really adapted
- 4:00Speaker 3: how he approaches today's players. I mean it's different now
- 4:03Speaker 3: even than when you guys played coming in. I mean
- 4:07Speaker 3: you think about ten years ago, how much different the
- 4:09Speaker 3: generation is and his ability to relate to those guys
- 4:12Speaker 3: and still connect with them and coaches them hard as hell,
- 4:15Speaker 3: but they all know that he cares about him.
- 4:17Speaker 2: No one knowing that. You've seen him kind of adapt
- 4:19Speaker 2: and develop with those times. Is there anything that you've
- 4:22Speaker 2: asked him on, like, you know, noticing that difference in him,
- 4:26Speaker 2: understanding that he has changed.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I think there's there's a you know, I think
- 4:30Speaker 3: one of the things that jumped out was, you know,
- 4:33Speaker 3: they drafted Dewan James last year in Cleveland, and it
- 4:37Speaker 3: was just he's just very different than the guys that
- 4:39Speaker 3: he's been on and in a long time ago, he
- 4:41Speaker 3: might have coached Dewan a very different way and ultimately
- 4:44Speaker 3: it might not have worked very well. And just to
- 4:47Speaker 3: see him adapt and know that maybe the way that
- 4:50Speaker 3: I'm approaching this, Dewan's not going to respond to me
- 4:53Speaker 3: yelling and screaming and getting in his face. I got
- 4:55Speaker 3: to be it's positive and encouraging and trying to point
- 4:58Speaker 3: out that these are the things that can help you.
- 5:00Speaker 3: If you want to make a lot of money, here's
- 5:01Speaker 3: how you do it right. And he appeals. He knows
- 5:04Speaker 3: how to appeal to guys a lot of different ways.
- 5:06Speaker 3: He knows the motivations I think. I mean, he's a
- 5:08Speaker 3: master coach. He's he's got every every way to relate
- 5:12Speaker 3: that you can relate in the book. And I asked
- 5:14Speaker 3: him all the time, like, well, what made you do that?
- 5:17Speaker 3: Why did you do that in this case and not
- 5:19Speaker 3: that case? And it's because he knows the player and
- 5:21Speaker 3: he knows how to make it work.
- 5:22Speaker 1: When you get this job at the Tennessee Titans and
- 5:25Speaker 1: you call your old man say I want you to
- 5:27Speaker 1: be the old line coach from my ball club.
- 5:30Speaker 2: How did that?
- 5:30Speaker 1: How did that all go down?
- 5:32Speaker 3: It was It was cool. The backstory is I interviewed
- 5:36Speaker 3: for two jobs the year before that had gone oh well,
- 5:40Speaker 3: A ways down the road. I felt like I was
- 5:42Speaker 3: in the mix, and I had a conversation with him
- 5:44Speaker 3: and I said, you know, do you want to to
- 5:46Speaker 3: do this. I've never worked for my dad. Never he
- 5:49Speaker 3: I never worked for him at any point. There have
- 5:52Speaker 3: been some chances where I might have, we might have
- 5:53Speaker 3: connected on staff to go, just never worked out. So
- 5:55Speaker 3: I've never spent any time with him in the coaching profession.
- 5:59Speaker 3: And so I asked him question a year ago and
- 6:01Speaker 3: he was like, no, I don't think I want to
- 6:02Speaker 3: do that really. Yeah, well, I mean if you think
- 6:06Speaker 3: about too, yeah, but you think about you know, there's
- 6:10Speaker 3: a lot that goes into a father and sun working together,
- 6:13Speaker 3: and this would be this is the first time that
- 6:15Speaker 3: I think a son has ever hired their father in
- 6:18Speaker 3: a substantial role like that. You know, It's like Kyle Shanahan,
- 6:22Speaker 3: Mike's always been around, but he never hired him in
- 6:25Speaker 3: an official could like. It wasn't like Mike Shanahan was
- 6:27Speaker 3: Kyle's coordinator, right, if that makes sense. It's kind of
- 6:31Speaker 3: a really unique setup. And so you know, we had
- 6:33Speaker 3: to work through all those things, like my dad's like,
- 6:35Speaker 3: I'm not for everybody, I'm what if you don't what
- 6:37Speaker 3: if you don't like the way I cod you know
- 6:39Speaker 3: what I mean? And you have to have those conversations,
- 6:41Speaker 3: and so we did, and ultimately he was like, I
- 6:43Speaker 3: just think I really like Cleveland, like Kevin Stefanski, and
- 6:46Speaker 3: I'm happy here. I like the guys in the room.
- 6:48Speaker 3: I don't really want to leave, understand, And so I
- 6:51Speaker 3: kind of just assumed that was going to be the
- 6:53Speaker 3: case as this process went along, and so as I interviewed,
- 6:55Speaker 3: I was everybody asked like, well, you know, is your
- 6:58Speaker 3: dad coming with you? I'm like, no, he's not. I mean,
- 7:01Speaker 3: we had we had the conversation is probably not gonna happen,
- 7:04Speaker 3: and I didn't think it would. And all of a sudden,
- 7:06Speaker 3: I get the job and I call him and tell
- 7:08Speaker 3: him I got it, and he calls the next day
- 7:11Speaker 3: and he's like, let me think about some things and
- 7:14Speaker 3: i'll call you back. Hold on. I was like, OK, no, no,
- 7:19Speaker 3: I mean that that initial conversation was like absolutely thrilled.
- 7:22Speaker 3: We didn't have it in that moment.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, but you know, yeah, you guys have a conversation, Hey,
- 7:26Speaker 1: I got the job, proud of your son. Tears in
- 7:28Speaker 1: both of your guys' eyes. The next day he calls
- 7:30Speaker 1: you and without any context, goes, let me think about
- 7:32Speaker 1: coming to help you out.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Yeah. I love that, And I think it just became one.
- 7:38Speaker 3: It became much more real for him in that moment.
- 7:40Speaker 3: And and I think had it been the year prior,
- 7:42Speaker 3: I think the answer still would have been no. And
- 7:44Speaker 3: but having it happened in real time and him going, man,
- 7:47Speaker 3: this is what a unique opportunity to go try to
- 7:50Speaker 3: help my son succeed.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Uh.
- 7:52Speaker 3: And I think I'd want to be a part of that.
- 7:54Speaker 3: And so as and I'll go have my press conference,
- 7:56Speaker 3: and we were kind of talking back and forth, and
- 7:58Speaker 3: after the press conference, he was like, this is I
- 8:01Speaker 3: want to make I want to do this, we need
- 8:03Speaker 3: to do this. It'll be it'll be really pretty fun.
- 8:05Speaker 3: And it's been maybe the coolest experience of my coaching
- 8:08Speaker 3: career is to be able to go to work with
- 8:09Speaker 3: my dad every day. It's been pretty sweet.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Dude, you had a unincredible press or when you're talking
- 8:14Speaker 2: about with your dad, like there's a lot of perspective,
- 8:18Speaker 2: a lot of just like you can tell when you
- 8:19Speaker 2: say that, like you genuinely mean it. Oh yeah, Was
- 8:22Speaker 2: there a reason that you got that you guys were
- 8:23Speaker 2: never on the same staff. Is there something about saying
- 8:26Speaker 2: maybe yourself that where it's like, Hey, I don't want
- 8:28Speaker 2: to be known this way and I don't want to
- 8:29Speaker 2: feel like I get any handouts from somebody who's already
- 8:31Speaker 2: been there, done that.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Yeah, Oh, that's true. One of the things I had finished.
- 8:35Speaker 3: My dad was at at Nebraska at the time. I
- 8:37Speaker 3: was just finishing my playing career, and he goes, he said,
- 8:42Speaker 3: you look, you can come to Nebraska and you can
- 8:43Speaker 3: be a GA here for me. If you want to
- 8:45Speaker 3: do that. I have a spot you can come do that.
- 8:48Speaker 3: He goes, but what I would recommend to you is
- 8:50Speaker 3: you've been at UCLA for for four years. You know
- 8:52Speaker 3: the people that you know the place. They have also
- 8:55Speaker 3: said we'd love to have you in this role if
- 8:57Speaker 3: you want to come when you graduate and do be
- 8:59Speaker 3: AGA here at UCLA. And my dad was like, I
- 9:01Speaker 3: really think you should stay at UCLA, And in that moment,
- 9:04Speaker 3: I was like like damn dad, like. But the best
- 9:08Speaker 3: advices he had ever given me was he goes, starting
- 9:11Speaker 3: to make your own way. He goes, it's already you're
- 9:13Speaker 3: already gonna get all these you know, all the the
- 9:17Speaker 3: nepotism and all stuff that goes around coaching. Where it's
- 9:19Speaker 3: like he goes, but you've I didn't give you your
- 9:21Speaker 3: first job, and he goes, that will matter at some
- 9:24Speaker 3: point for you, and I want you to make your
- 9:26Speaker 3: own way and and make your own connections and meet
- 9:28Speaker 3: your own people that can help you, as opposed to
- 9:31Speaker 3: me being the one to do it. And I think
- 9:32Speaker 3: that was the best advice you could have given me,
- 9:34Speaker 3: and it probably was the best thing that happened to me.
- 9:36Speaker 3: He was not going to work for my dad and
- 9:38Speaker 3: staying where I was at any point.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Were you guys close to working together in the past.
- 9:43Speaker 3: No, And nothing that came up. You know, when we
- 9:45Speaker 3: first got to Cincinnati, there there was some there was
- 9:50Speaker 3: a chance that maybe it could have worked out. But
- 9:52Speaker 3: it's Zach's first job and he's he wants to hire
- 9:54Speaker 3: the people that that he wanted to hire, and it
- 9:57Speaker 3: never got It was never more than like a curiosity, like,
- 10:01Speaker 3: oh I wonder if that would work, and it just
- 10:03Speaker 3: he was still in Washington at the time, and it
- 10:06Speaker 3: was all he was again, happy where he's at. He's
- 10:08Speaker 3: got a good line there. It was no big deal.
- 10:10Speaker 3: So it never never went any further than curiosity. But
- 10:14Speaker 3: it no, we've never been really close at any point
- 10:17Speaker 3: to working together, which is kind of crazy to think.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Yeah, talk about how you cut your teeth into the
- 10:23Speaker 2: business and being a GA at U c l A
- 10:25Speaker 2: and moving on from that role.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Yeah, typical GA stuff.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Man.
- 10:29Speaker 3: I made coffee and got people food and worked long
- 10:33Speaker 3: hours and you know, we had a really good staff
- 10:36Speaker 3: there at UCLA, which it's someday someone will write a
- 10:39Speaker 3: story about it. But Eric Banniman was the running backs coach.
- 10:45Speaker 3: John Embry was our tight ends coach. Dino Babers was
- 10:48Speaker 3: the receivers coach. Tom Cable was the offensive coordinator. Jim
- 10:53Speaker 3: Soboda was a quarterbacks coach. We had all these guys
- 10:56Speaker 3: that all went on to be head coaches, you know,
- 10:59Speaker 3: within a certain period of time. I'm and a really
- 11:01Speaker 3: dynamic staff, all these and so I got to learn
- 11:03Speaker 3: from all these guys as a really young coach, which
- 11:05Speaker 3: probably a huge reason of why that experience was so
- 11:08Speaker 3: good for me, but man, it was a it's a
- 11:10Speaker 3: grind GA life is is uh is not for everybody,
- 11:13Speaker 3: And back then that was you only had two gas
- 11:17Speaker 3: that could be on the field, and so it was
- 11:18Speaker 3: like it was two or three guys that did everything.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Now you have all these analysts and there's all this
- 11:23Speaker 3: different stuff that they didn't have back then. By rule
- 11:25Speaker 3: you couldn't have anybody else anybody on But it depends
- 11:29Speaker 3: on where you went. Now U C l A. I
- 11:32Speaker 3: can guarantee you.
- 11:32Speaker 1: That because followers the Bruins, Huh yeah, it was me.
- 11:35Speaker 3: In fact, the gas there were me, Clark Lee, head
- 11:38Speaker 3: coach at Vanderbilt, Ryan Ficken, who's been in the NFL
- 11:43Speaker 3: for quite some time as a special teams coordinator, and
- 11:47Speaker 3: Phil Rauscher, who's the line coach at the Jags. And
- 11:51Speaker 3: so it was a bunch of guys, like we were
- 11:52Speaker 3: all young coaches and we've all had these pretty good careers,
- 11:54Speaker 3: but that was all we had and we had to
- 11:56Speaker 3: do every We did everything really, I mean operation stuff,
- 12:00Speaker 3: grinding all the tape, breaking it all down, breaking all
- 12:02Speaker 3: the tape down before all the PFF dat I got
- 12:04Speaker 3: supplied to everybody. I mean you had to break down
- 12:06Speaker 3: the down and distance. You didn't know what personnel in
- 12:08Speaker 3: the fields. You couldn't see the jersey numbers because the
- 12:10Speaker 3: tape wasn't an HD. It's just a whole different way
- 12:13Speaker 3: of doing things than it is now. But it was
- 12:14Speaker 3: it was a lot of work. It was hard soul.
- 12:17Speaker 1: They didn't look over at the SEC and go, you know,
- 12:19Speaker 1: they got a lot of guys over there, maybe we
- 12:21Speaker 1: should do a couple of things too, No.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Like that. Yeah, yeah, we or they just didn't have
- 12:26Speaker 3: the you know, it is a public.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Means yeah, I mean yeah, but usually there's a nice area.
- 12:32Speaker 1: It's Pasadena for sure.
- 12:33Speaker 2: But as far as like calling the shots, the big
- 12:34Speaker 2: wigs like a fair enough football over everything, we'll find
- 12:37Speaker 2: a way.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Yeah, very very academically drove.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, very academically. Not every school can do both,
- 12:43Speaker 1: like Michigan.
- 12:46Speaker 2: From a sports standpoint, finding all the edges, yeah, signals.
- 12:49Speaker 1: You brought up a PFF what's your what's your stance
- 12:52Speaker 1: on PFF's rating system.
- 12:55Speaker 3: I think there's value in a baseline, like there is
- 12:57Speaker 3: some things that you can you can you can look
- 13:00Speaker 3: at it, and there's a number that they assigned to, uh,
- 13:04Speaker 3: particularly to some positions that are really hard for like
- 13:06Speaker 3: the average person to have any idea what is good
- 13:08Speaker 3: and bad. But as far as like is at the
- 13:11Speaker 3: end all be all and the grading system not at all.
- 13:13Speaker 3: I mean it's you got to watch the game. You
- 13:16Speaker 3: have to understand assignments. And they've gotten better, I will say,
- 13:19Speaker 3: like the grading system has gotten better over the years.
- 13:21Speaker 3: They've refined it. I use it more for some of
- 13:24Speaker 3: the just the amount of data that they have. I
- 13:26Speaker 3: can go, let me see every screen from every team
- 13:29Speaker 3: for the last four years, and I can pull them
- 13:31Speaker 3: all up and watch them all. Yeah, and that's where
- 13:34Speaker 3: the value and that is for me. The grades, I
- 13:36Speaker 3: don't really you know, I don't really put a whole
- 13:39Speaker 3: lot of stock in the grades.
- 13:40Speaker 2: It feels like they'll probably use the grades like have
- 13:42Speaker 2: that there, and then obviously every team does their own
- 13:44Speaker 2: and then I'm sure that they.
- 13:45Speaker 3: There's a benchmarks a little bit yea, yeah, there's a
- 13:47Speaker 3: bench more. I mean, it does give you it is
- 13:49Speaker 3: a halfway accurate depiction of what a what a good
- 13:53Speaker 3: and bad might look like, you know what I mean.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Yeah, it's cut and dry, but the gray areas I
- 13:58Speaker 1: feel like, is where PF because if they're not there
- 13:59Speaker 1: with the language of the play call and what the
- 14:01Speaker 1: exact technique is supposed to do. Taylor, I don't hate
- 14:04Speaker 1: PFF at all, but there was a like, there's a
- 14:07Speaker 1: time where players, players in the locker room and the
- 14:09Speaker 1: Titans were like kind of worried that if their PFF
- 14:12Speaker 1: grade was bad, that teams and coaches were looking at that.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Do coaches look at the PFF grade ever, and.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Go, no, no, no, maybe we should maybe we're doing
- 14:19Speaker 3: something wrong. No, I don't think I've never looked at
- 14:21Speaker 3: it like that. Yeah, I've not been around anybody that
- 14:24Speaker 3: ever has used that as like that's our grade for
- 14:27Speaker 3: a player. You still great a player, watch the tape
- 14:30Speaker 3: and understand what's being asked systematically as well, other than
- 14:34Speaker 3: just hey, this guy graded at a eighty two point six, Like,
- 14:38Speaker 3: I don't know what that means.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Number.
- 14:40Speaker 3: That's a numb.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a solid numb.
- 14:43Speaker 3: You wouldn't be so mad about.
- 14:44Speaker 1: It, yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
- 14:47Speaker 2: There would be the time where you feel strongly about PFF,
- 14:49Speaker 2: but then you grade out well, so then it's like,
- 14:51Speaker 2: all right, where are you going to stand? You know,
- 14:53Speaker 2: what I mean, like, say you hate PFF but you're
- 14:55Speaker 2: ninety five.
- 14:56Speaker 1: It's like, well, I mean I did have a situation,
- 15:00Speaker 1: I might be honest something. Yeah, Yeah, I had a
- 15:01Speaker 1: situation in twenty sixteen where they were grading me well
- 15:04Speaker 1: and then Paul Kaharsky, the group of the Titans and
- 15:07Speaker 1: news guys were like, how do you feel about that?
- 15:08Speaker 1: I took a stance then and there they don't they
- 15:11Speaker 1: don't run the show. Yeah, they don't run the show.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Quickly my grades went down, so I don't know. Yeah,
- 15:16Speaker 1: that's where they might kind of start. Yeah, it might
- 15:19Speaker 1: be a little bit of ticket over the PFF.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:21Speaker 2: With your throughout your coaching journey, you've been at some
- 15:23Speaker 2: cool spots. Which spot or stop that you've been at
- 15:26Speaker 2: has you feel like has been the most pivotal for
- 15:29Speaker 2: where you are now?
- 15:31Speaker 3: God, They've all, all, for different reasons, have been really
- 15:34Speaker 3: really influential. The two that the two of the most
- 15:37Speaker 3: are are my time in Denver with Peyton Manning for
- 15:41Speaker 3: four of those six years I was there, and then
- 15:43Speaker 3: the journey in Cincinnati from where we started to where
- 15:46Speaker 3: we ended up. Those two spots are probably the most
- 15:49Speaker 3: because they're the longest days I had, they were the
- 15:50Speaker 3: most influential. Obviously, being around Peyton manning for any amount
- 15:53Speaker 3: of time is a is a blessing in and of itself.
- 15:56Speaker 3: But yeah, he's that was like a PhD quarterback.
- 15:59Speaker 2: While we grow him here at the bus, the fly
- 16:02Speaker 2: keeps flying around.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Look, you don't have mean cicadas in here yet, I
- 16:06Speaker 3: know we're.
- 16:06Speaker 2: They're everywhere out here. Dude, Watching Peyton in that last
- 16:10Speaker 2: year where he necessarily couldn't throw it beyond five ten yards,
- 16:13Speaker 2: what was it like sitting back? Yeah, I mean, I'm
- 16:16Speaker 2: sure he'd say it, well, watching him operate from being
- 16:20Speaker 2: more limited than he ever.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Has, Yeah, it was really it was a It was
- 16:25Speaker 3: a wild year because we had just transitioned from Gary
- 16:29Speaker 3: Kubiak was the head coach, and then they brought that
- 16:32Speaker 3: whole system which was vastly different from the one that
- 16:35Speaker 3: he had run for the better part of eighteen years
- 16:37Speaker 3: at that point, and so there was a big back
- 16:40Speaker 3: and forth there. He had gotten injured that year and
- 16:42Speaker 3: missed a bunch of time and then came back for
- 16:44Speaker 3: the playoffs. At the very end, brock Oswaller I think
- 16:47Speaker 3: had thrown a couple interceptions and they replaced him at
- 16:49Speaker 3: halftime right at the very end of the season in
- 16:51Speaker 3: like a must win game against the Chargers, and then
- 16:54Speaker 3: he ended up playing the playoffs. It was just it
- 16:56Speaker 3: was a roller coaster season. It was a lot of
- 16:57Speaker 3: ups and downs. But what the cool part was used
- 16:59Speaker 3: to saw what made him so great was his ability
- 17:03Speaker 3: to process and know what to do and when to
- 17:05Speaker 3: do it in the moment. Like it was unbelievable. And
- 17:08Speaker 3: even with a diminishing physical skill set. He wasn't what
- 17:12Speaker 3: he was when he was in his twenties. I mean,
- 17:15Speaker 3: it was unbelievable what he pulled off with his brain
- 17:19Speaker 3: and just being able to know what to do with
- 17:21Speaker 3: the football.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Yeah, what's he like watching at practice? Like I've had
- 17:24Speaker 2: teammates who have played with him, They're like, you know,
- 17:26Speaker 2: if a tight end drops the ball, he'll take he'll
- 17:28Speaker 2: take the He'll remove the tight end, even if even
- 17:30Speaker 2: if you're back there like oh no, get back out there.
- 17:32Speaker 2: The Sheriff's like, no, no, give me somebody else who's
- 17:34Speaker 2: going to catch the ball and be dependable in these moments?
- 17:37Speaker 3: Like what was he likes?
- 17:38Speaker 1: Accurate?
- 17:38Speaker 3: That's what it was. It was. It was a standard
- 17:40Speaker 3: and it's actually funny. We're having a conversation today about
- 17:44Speaker 3: guys that are like that get to that point in
- 17:46Speaker 3: their careers that have the pelts on the wall and
- 17:49Speaker 3: the experience, but on top of that, the pressure, you know,
- 17:52Speaker 3: the expectation is that they're gonna win every game. Aaron Rodgers,
- 17:56Speaker 3: Tom Brady, Drew Brees. Those guys get to a certain
- 17:59Speaker 3: point in their career where they don't allow anything other
- 18:03Speaker 3: than what the highest standard is possible, and if you
- 18:06Speaker 3: don't meet it, you're not gonna be playing with them.
- 18:10Speaker 3: And that's how he operated and and I appreciated that
- 18:13Speaker 3: because he's got all the pressure he's got. I gotta
- 18:15Speaker 3: I gotta do my part. And if I'm if I'm
- 18:17Speaker 3: gonna do all this, then I'm gonna make sure everybody
- 18:20Speaker 3: around me is is at the same level that I am.
- 18:23Speaker 3: And I thought that was a really cool thing to
- 18:25Speaker 3: witness and in person. But that's how it would be
- 18:27Speaker 3: if you if you didn't if you missed an assignment.
- 18:30Speaker 3: He was particularly ruthless on like running backs and protection
- 18:33Speaker 3: and he had to be able to trust him to
- 18:34Speaker 3: do because he didn't. You know, I don't want to
- 18:35Speaker 3: get hit, right and if they missed an assignment, it
- 18:37Speaker 3: was like give me the next one, or like if
- 18:39Speaker 3: he's if he's coming into the game, I'll come out,
- 18:42Speaker 3: you know.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Like that.
- 18:43Speaker 3: It was that intensity and the expectation he's coming into the.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Game, Kelly, you don't put him in the game, will
- 18:48Speaker 2: be out?
- 18:49Speaker 3: Yeah. If I see him coming on the field, you'll
- 18:51Speaker 3: see me walking off.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:53Speaker 3: It h So that part was just it's it's just
- 18:55Speaker 3: a demand of the standard of what you expect every day.
- 18:58Speaker 3: And it was awesome and again everybody rose to meet it.
- 19:02Speaker 3: You know, we had young players and Eric Decker and
- 19:04Speaker 3: Demarus Thomas and c. J. Anderson. I mean, he meet
- 19:07Speaker 3: some guys that that were unproven at the time that
- 19:09Speaker 3: he helped make what they became. And it was a
- 19:13Speaker 3: really cool process to be a part of. Man, he's
- 19:16Speaker 3: unlike anybody I've ever been around.
- 19:18Speaker 1: What's it like with the coaches during practice when he's
- 19:20Speaker 1: sending a guy away and the coach is like, no,
- 19:21Speaker 1: you're in, and there's like this kind of this battle
- 19:24Speaker 1: of egos between the sheriff and the coach. Does it
- 19:27Speaker 1: get uncomfortable at all? Is there like in the meeting room.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Like this, Can we be honest about it. It's if
- 19:34Speaker 3: he doesn't want him in, he's not gonna be whether
- 19:36Speaker 3: coaches aren't.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Saying a word like yeah, I mean you probably eight.
- 19:40Speaker 3: I mean that's just what That's just what it was,
- 19:42Speaker 3: and that's why and you and you, and it wasn't
- 19:46Speaker 3: like that all the time, but like there was, there
- 19:48Speaker 3: was a standard and if you didn't meet it, the
- 19:50Speaker 3: expectation was that you wouldn't be you wouldn't be there
- 19:53Speaker 3: playing with them. But that's also what drove guys to
- 19:55Speaker 3: be even better than they thought they could be, was
- 19:58Speaker 3: because they wanted to be a part of it and
- 20:00Speaker 3: they wanted to be in that mode. They wanted to
- 20:01Speaker 3: be counted on. And it's amazing what happens when you
- 20:04Speaker 3: got a guy making sure that you better do it
- 20:07Speaker 3: right or you can't be Yeah, it drives you to
- 20:09Speaker 3: be great.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Truth you. So you had Peyton Manning and then you
- 20:12Speaker 1: go to Cincinnati and you get blessed with Joe Cool
- 20:15Speaker 1: Joe Burrow. Yeah, what is Joe.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Have a staff and says the two years in Detroit
- 20:21Speaker 3: were phenomenal. It was I God, Matthews talk about underrated man,
- 20:28Speaker 3: Like I think he's one of the best quarterbacks in
- 20:30Speaker 3: football and has been for a long time, and I
- 20:32Speaker 3: think he finally gets his due, but there was a
- 20:33Speaker 3: while there where he didn't. And he might be one
- 20:37Speaker 3: of the toughest players I've ever been around, and one
- 20:40Speaker 3: of the most crazy talented quarterbacks that I've seen play.
- 20:43Speaker 3: I mean, he's unbelievable.
- 20:45Speaker 1: That clip of them in like a two minute drive
- 20:47Speaker 1: to win the game and he like gets his shoulder
- 20:48Speaker 1: out or something like that and he's on the sideline
- 20:50Speaker 1: like that in his career. Yeah, yes, that was like
- 20:53Speaker 1: just one of the cooler things you see a quarterback
- 20:55Speaker 1: do because he's like hurt and he's like, I'll do it,
- 20:57Speaker 1: and he throws a touchdown the games over they win.
- 20:59Speaker 3: He's like, should think it was broke and he broke
- 21:02Speaker 3: his collar bone? No, ship, Yeah, I think that's what
- 21:04Speaker 3: it was if I remember correctly. But yeah, he's ah, you
- 21:07Speaker 3: want to talk about I mean, you guys know the
- 21:10Speaker 3: things that guys play through that people don't know about,
- 21:12Speaker 3: uh is it would be shocking. I think if people
- 21:16Speaker 3: knew what the guy's dealt with during a football season
- 21:19Speaker 3: and the things that he played through and the toughness
- 21:21Speaker 3: that he had, it was it might be the toughest
- 21:23Speaker 3: guy I've ever seen. I mean, truthfully, oh yeah he is.
- 21:27Speaker 3: He is hard nosed, tough at all get out, and
- 21:30Speaker 3: he's an awesome guy to be around. I don't know
- 21:32Speaker 3: how much time you guys have spent with him, but
- 21:34Speaker 3: I never I.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Don't think I met him either.
- 21:37Speaker 2: You just hear he just like that time.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Why do you think he was still under raid for
- 21:41Speaker 1: so long?
- 21:42Speaker 3: Just because Yeah, they didn't win enough, you know, And
- 21:47Speaker 3: that's again, that's a the wins tend to become a
- 21:49Speaker 3: quarterback stat which they probably shouldn't be. But there he
- 21:53Speaker 3: was on teams that were probably on the on the
- 21:55Speaker 3: brink and could never quite get over that hump. And
- 21:58Speaker 3: and then obviously he goes to l A and he's
- 22:00Speaker 3: been lightning on fires and every time, I mean, he's
- 22:01Speaker 3: been unbelievable. There, wins the super Bowl, all the like.
- 22:05Speaker 3: It's he's finally I think, getting his due as a player.
- 22:08Speaker 3: But he was that player before he got to LA
- 22:11Speaker 3: He just didn't probably get the recognition for it.
- 22:14Speaker 2: And then you get Joe b. Yeah, yeah, you've been
- 22:17Speaker 2: around some cats.
- 22:18Speaker 1: I've been very lucky.
- 22:20Speaker 2: I've been very like Mad Stafford, Joe Burrow what are
- 22:23Speaker 2: the similarities that all three of those guys have, And
- 22:26Speaker 2: then you talked about a little bit on the way
- 22:29Speaker 2: that Staff was, Peyton was, and then also some differences
- 22:32Speaker 2: with Joe b.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it was. It was very different because
- 22:35Speaker 3: Peyton was obviously going and I think when he came
- 22:37Speaker 3: to Denver that was like year fifteen. When I went
- 22:40Speaker 3: was when I was with Matthew. I think Matthew was
- 22:41Speaker 3: going into like seven eight, A, seven eight, nine ten somewhere.
- 22:45Speaker 3: He was. He had been playing for a couple of years.
- 22:47Speaker 3: And then having Joe was different because Joe was a
- 22:50Speaker 3: rookie obviously a highly highly regarded and his reputation preceded
- 22:55Speaker 3: him when he got drafted. But yeah, he was still
- 22:56Speaker 3: a rookie and then so that was a really fun
- 22:58Speaker 3: process to try to help that development from being a
- 23:03Speaker 3: rookie and as you guys know, rookies are rookies eve
- 23:05Speaker 3: no matter how good they are, still takes some time.
- 23:08Speaker 3: But to see him become everything that we thought he
- 23:12Speaker 3: could become and he knew he could become was pretty awesome.
- 23:15Speaker 3: And that's because he shares a lot of the same
- 23:16Speaker 3: traits that that Peyton and Matthew have in terms of
- 23:20Speaker 3: you know, there's just an edge to the there's just
- 23:23Speaker 3: something about those guys, and you know it when you
- 23:25Speaker 3: see it, where they just don't accept anything other than
- 23:29Speaker 3: the best and there is no such thing as failure
- 23:31Speaker 3: like they do not there they won't fail, they can't fail,
- 23:35Speaker 3: and there's there's a willpower in that. I think that's
- 23:37Speaker 3: kind of the baseline of who they are. And then
- 23:39Speaker 3: there's a drive to be the best there is and
- 23:44Speaker 3: there's just and then he has the ability to deliver
- 23:47Speaker 3: on it, which is pretty cool. Very different personality than
- 23:51Speaker 3: Peyton and Matthew. They're all very unique, but they share
- 23:54Speaker 3: that commonality where they're they're at their core, they're they're assassins.
- 24:01Speaker 2: When did you win, Joe?
- 24:02Speaker 1: When Joe walks into the the Bengals franchise and he said,
- 24:07Speaker 1: takes rookies, doesn't matter how good they are, takes them
- 24:09Speaker 1: a little bit of time. When did you know, Okay,
- 24:10Speaker 1: we got the franchise quarterback?
- 24:13Speaker 3: Probably about halfway through that first year where you're still
- 24:16Speaker 3: kind of figuring some things out. Obviously it's a COVID year,
- 24:19Speaker 3: so it's even more challenging. So he has no offseason.
- 24:21Speaker 3: We don't have any OTA's there's all virtual.
- 24:24Speaker 1: God, imagine picking up a playbook so hard.
- 24:27Speaker 3: And and then there's no fans in the stadium. So
- 24:29Speaker 3: his first game, we play the Chargers, and this is
- 24:34Speaker 3: the game where uh Tyrod got injected and they punched
- 24:40Speaker 3: a lung and so then it was Herbert and him
- 24:42Speaker 3: playing and Joe goes down at the very end of
- 24:47Speaker 3: the game. It would been like the legend of Joe
- 24:49Speaker 3: Burrow would have only grown end of the game. Goes
- 24:51Speaker 3: down and throws a fade stop to aj Green in
- 24:53Speaker 3: the corner of the end zone and they calls for OPI.
- 24:57Speaker 3: So the game winning touchdown gets called back. So we
- 24:59Speaker 3: go kick it field goal to tie it, and our
- 25:01Speaker 3: kicker cramped and missed the game winning field goal. There's
- 25:06Speaker 3: no there's nobody in the stands cramps and we miss,
- 25:10Speaker 3: and so here's this, like here's this like busting out
- 25:12Speaker 3: of the scene. Here comes Joe Burrow come back win
- 25:14Speaker 3: last minute when in his first start, and it just
- 25:17Speaker 3: it isn't And it was like, that's that's that's unfortunate.
- 25:22Speaker 3: You saw a glimpse of that and that in that drive, like, oh,
- 25:24Speaker 3: this guy, it's gonna be pretty good, I think, and
- 25:26Speaker 3: then each game he successively got better. And I think
- 25:29Speaker 3: the one game you probably played in potentially, I think
- 25:34Speaker 3: Tennessee came to Cincinnati and we had lost, and we
- 25:38Speaker 3: had five new starters up front, and then we had
- 25:41Speaker 3: signed Quinton Spain on Friday and he started at left
- 25:44Speaker 3: guard on Sunday, yes, and so we had we had
- 25:49Speaker 3: a guy that hadn't practiced with us, and we had
- 25:51Speaker 3: five new starters. And that was the game where Joe
- 25:53Speaker 3: sort of took it on it and took it on
- 25:55Speaker 3: his back and we ended up winning the game. We
- 25:56Speaker 3: played pretty well, and it was that game when it
- 25:59Speaker 3: was like he's arrived.
- 26:01Speaker 1: This is the guys.
- 26:02Speaker 3: He is what we thought he was going to be.
- 26:04Speaker 3: And then he goes and plays good for another I think,
- 26:05Speaker 3: maybe one more week, two more weeks, and he gets
- 26:07Speaker 3: hurt in Washington and tears me up. So the season,
- 26:10Speaker 3: but he was we were hitting this rise, we were
- 26:12Speaker 3: we were gonna win. I think we would have won
- 26:14Speaker 3: a handful of games on a stretch, and I think
- 26:15Speaker 3: people would have looked like, oh, here he comes, but
- 26:17Speaker 3: he gets hurt and it's out. Nobody knows how good
- 26:19Speaker 3: he's really going to be and he ultimately sacrificed his
- 26:22Speaker 3: knee for Jamar Chase because that allowed us. We were
- 26:26Speaker 3: not very good after that, and we picked Jamar next
- 26:28Speaker 3: year the fifth overall.
- 26:30Speaker 1: But a lot of stuff came up in that draft
- 26:31Speaker 1: where when when he gets hurt, everyone's like they need protection.
- 26:35Speaker 1: You just said all the offensive lineman route. You sign
- 26:37Speaker 1: a guy off the streets, he comes and starts for
- 26:39Speaker 1: you that week, and you guys go pick Jamar Chase.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Where was the thought process in that building when you're
- 26:44Speaker 1: evaluating because you're you're thinking franchise quarterback. We know this
- 26:47Speaker 1: is the guy, we got to get him offensive lineman?
- 26:50Speaker 3: What was? It was the Pine sul it was and
- 26:53Speaker 3: Jamal That was like the big debate. It's like, how
- 26:55Speaker 3: do the how can the Bengals not draft a left tackle?
- 26:58Speaker 1: Looking back on it, you can't go wrong like both
- 27:00Speaker 1: those yeah.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Both of me, Like these guys are gonna both be
- 27:03Speaker 3: all pro players and whoever you pick was going to
- 27:07Speaker 3: be right. But you we went back and forth and
- 27:10Speaker 3: there was plenty of debate, plenty of opinion on it,
- 27:14Speaker 3: and ultimately I had went back to my time in
- 27:17Speaker 3: Denver when we had Damarius Thomas Eric Decker and then
- 27:21Speaker 3: Emmanuel Sanders, and then in the slot we had Wes Welker.
- 27:23Speaker 3: Uh and we were we were And.
- 27:26Speaker 1: I was so nasty underrated, Yeah.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Very very good player. And we we had a game
- 27:32Speaker 3: against New England when we were in Denver down the
- 27:34Speaker 3: stretch and it was two bad was back to back
- 27:38Speaker 3: plays or maybe two out of three plays. End of
- 27:41Speaker 3: the game. We had to go win the game and
- 27:43Speaker 3: we hit two go balls down on each one each side.
- 27:46Speaker 3: I think one was Marius, one was to Emmanual, and
- 27:49Speaker 3: it was like, man, when you gotta win versus press coverage,
- 27:53Speaker 3: it doesn't matter who you have up front. If you
- 27:54Speaker 3: can't have a guy that can go win that matchup,
- 27:57Speaker 3: you're gonna have a hard time throwing the ball to
- 27:58Speaker 3: win in the NFL, and that always just stuck with me,
- 28:01Speaker 3: and I always thought that was a good way to
- 28:04Speaker 3: build an offense. Is that make sure you have guys
- 28:06Speaker 3: that can win. And you know, we getting this debate
- 28:08Speaker 3: back and forth about the tackle and the receiver, and
- 28:10Speaker 3: I was like, well, I said, if he can win
- 28:11Speaker 3: fast enough, it's not gonna matter how long we buy.
- 28:13Speaker 3: If he can win quick, we can get the ball
- 28:14Speaker 3: out quick. And one of the things that Joe does
- 28:16Speaker 3: so well is play on time in process, and so
- 28:20Speaker 3: the ball gets distributed and it's like, well, we can
- 28:23Speaker 3: negate some of the offensive line issues if we've got
- 28:25Speaker 3: elite playmakers outside. And that was my stance, and then
- 28:29Speaker 3: it's a couple of other people had some didn't have that.
- 28:31Speaker 3: So it went back and forth, but ultimately we landed
- 28:33Speaker 3: on that Jamar would be the the gay that scores touchdowns,
- 28:36Speaker 3: would be one that would be more helpful for our offense,
- 28:39Speaker 3: and thank god we did.
- 28:41Speaker 1: So you were the guy that brought Jamara Cincinnati.
- 28:42Speaker 3: I'm not going to claim that. I'm not going to
- 28:44Speaker 3: claim I'm just telling you my perspective on the argument
- 28:47Speaker 3: was that, and I voiced that. I mean, that was
- 28:50Speaker 3: my prerogative the voice that as a coordinator, and I
- 28:53Speaker 3: think Zach felt the same way as Zach Taylor. I
- 28:56Speaker 3: think he landed on that same argument. So the two
- 28:58Speaker 3: of us sort of were in agreement, but ultimately it
- 29:01Speaker 3: was that's a Zach Taylor, Duke Tobin, and Mike Brown
- 29:04Speaker 3: decision that gets made. But that's that was the argument
- 29:07Speaker 3: back then.
- 29:07Speaker 2: The most fiery or drama filled moment in a war
- 29:11Speaker 2: room that you've seen.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Hold on, can I just did you guys talk to
- 29:15Speaker 1: Joe Burrow at all about Hey, should we go tackle
- 29:19Speaker 1: why Receeve ever being a rookie, but knowing he's.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Your friend, Joe's involved, we kept Joe in the loop
- 29:24Speaker 3: on all the personnel decisions and the thought process, and
- 29:27Speaker 3: we actually talked to him at because he knew Jambar
- 29:29Speaker 3: and so Jamar didin' if you if you remember, Jamar
- 29:31Speaker 3: didn't play that year because it was COVID year and
- 29:33Speaker 3: he sat out and so there wasn't any recent film
- 29:35Speaker 3: on him other than the year that he was tearing
- 29:37Speaker 3: up the sec with Joe killing and so Joe was like,
- 29:40Speaker 3: Joe didn't Joe was like, I'll take Jamar every every
- 29:44Speaker 3: day and twice on Sunday like this, It's not even
- 29:46Speaker 3: a debate for him. He because he knew what he was,
- 29:49Speaker 3: he knew how impactful he could be. And so Joe
- 29:51Speaker 3: was all in favor of Jamar in that situation and
- 29:55Speaker 3: I'm glad he was.
- 29:56Speaker 1: I love it.
- 29:57Speaker 2: So I forgot make sure you get that same question. Yeah,
- 30:00Speaker 2: most fiery or drama filled tense moment in a in
- 30:05Speaker 2: a war room that you've that you've been a part
- 30:06Speaker 2: of or witnessed.
- 30:08Speaker 3: You know, not all there hasn't been as many were.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Somebody who look back, you're like, man, maybe they should
- 30:13Speaker 2: we should have took that guy.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Oh, there's always that. I mean, I would say the
- 30:18Speaker 3: debates between the players that were available to us and
- 30:21Speaker 3: at pick five that year was pretty intense. I mean,
- 30:24Speaker 3: there was some guys that felt like Kyle Pitts was
- 30:26Speaker 3: a really fantastic prospect coming out and he was the
- 30:30Speaker 3: Pinnae seul. Those the other guys that were involved with
- 30:33Speaker 3: Obviously DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Watta were both in that conversation,
- 30:36Speaker 3: So those were pretty Those were pretty intense conversations because
- 30:40Speaker 3: guys were pretty convicted on what they thought those players
- 30:42Speaker 3: can be. And so I remember a good couple back
- 30:45Speaker 3: and forth on some of those debates on this player
- 30:48Speaker 3: over this player, and ultimately when you look back, like, well,
- 30:52Speaker 3: we weren't gonna be wrong either way. All those guys
- 30:54Speaker 3: ended up being great players, So we know nobody was
- 30:57Speaker 3: wrong in that regard. But when you're debating on who
- 30:59Speaker 3: to pick, and do you take Pena Suol or do
- 31:02Speaker 3: you do you take Pina Suol and try to take
- 31:05Speaker 3: Devon Smith and you know what's the what what player
- 31:08Speaker 3: are you looking at? And you obviously account for some
- 31:10Speaker 3: of those quarterbacks going and you look at the world
- 31:12Speaker 3: of player you're in and you got a debate like hell,
- 31:14Speaker 3: And those usually means that you made the best decision too,
- 31:17Speaker 3: because you've you've fleshed out all the all the good
- 31:20Speaker 3: and bads and pros and cons of all the players.
- 31:22Speaker 3: And but those were pretty intent. Those debates are pretty intense.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Those are the ones that I remember the most because
- 31:26Speaker 3: you're picking at five, that's a that should be a
- 31:31Speaker 3: Hall of Fame style player and you can't get it wrong.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Yeah, with with that clock ticking down at five, how
- 31:38Speaker 1: long did that discussion go up before someone's like, hey,
- 31:40Speaker 1: we got to call this thing in Or was it
- 31:41Speaker 1: pretty decided when knew.
- 31:44Speaker 3: You once you knew where the players are, because we
- 31:46Speaker 3: weren't sure who was going to Gore is gonna go
- 31:48Speaker 3: to Atlanta? You didn't know, You didn't know if Miami
- 31:50Speaker 3: was going to try to trade up. There was a
- 31:52Speaker 3: whole lot of stuff going on that until you're on
- 31:55Speaker 3: the clock, you don't know. But the decision had been
- 31:57Speaker 3: made prior to the draft, even starting that if this
- 32:00Speaker 3: this is the order we're going to go in. If
- 32:02Speaker 3: this is if Jamar's there, we're taking them. If Jamar's
- 32:06Speaker 3: not there, we're taking Pena. If those two are both gone,
- 32:09Speaker 3: we're taking this guy. So that stuff all gets settled
- 32:11Speaker 3: out prior to the draft, even starting.
- 32:13Speaker 1: When you when you hearing you talk about the Bengals
- 32:16Speaker 1: and how you guys established your offense gets me fired
- 32:19Speaker 1: up for the Titans because you're seeing how you view
- 32:22Speaker 1: the field, how you veel you need guys to win
- 32:23Speaker 1: and press one on one coverage and you're getting all
- 32:26Speaker 1: these athletes in there, all you have so many, so
- 32:29Speaker 1: much talent on the offensive side of the ball. Now, like,
- 32:33Speaker 1: what what's the expectation WHI should be happening for the Titans?
- 32:35Speaker 1: We win it all this year? Is this it?
- 32:37Speaker 2: You know?
- 32:38Speaker 1: I tell I tell Jack and Garrett back there, who've
- 32:40Speaker 1: been Titans fans. It's the inception of Tennessee that we're
- 32:42Speaker 1: gonna win the Super Bowl.
- 32:43Speaker 3: I tell our guys all the time that we don't
- 32:44Speaker 3: make any any predictions or promises, So I I certainly
- 32:48Speaker 3: can't step out here. And that's good meeting set, that's
- 32:50Speaker 3: good anything other than that. I will say this though,
- 32:53Speaker 3: I am excited about what we've done. The players we've added,
- 32:57Speaker 3: I think they're all you know, we had with Calvin
- 32:59Speaker 3: Ridley and and Tyler Boyd and and de Hop coming back,
- 33:02Speaker 3: and Tony Pollard mixed mixing him with with Taj Spears,
- 33:06Speaker 3: and you get a chance to draft J. C. Latham,
- 33:09Speaker 3: and you got a year two for Peter Skronsky and
- 33:11Speaker 3: now you go sign Lloyd Kushienberry. To sound like, I
- 33:13Speaker 3: feel like there's some there's some really exciting pieces that
- 33:18Speaker 3: you know, if we can put it all together, I
- 33:19Speaker 3: think we have a chance. And obviously I believe in
- 33:21Speaker 3: Will Levis. It's a large reason why I took the
- 33:23Speaker 3: job is that I think he's capable of being a
- 33:25Speaker 3: really good player. Uh and he has not disappointed so
- 33:27Speaker 3: far in the Austinson program. He's fantastic, does everything you
- 33:31Speaker 3: ask the way you want it. And I'm I'm excited
- 33:34Speaker 3: to see what we have. I was just I'll leave
- 33:35Speaker 3: it at that. I think we we can. I think
- 33:38Speaker 3: we can put together a competitive football team.
- 33:40Speaker 2: What do you see in Will Levis? Because again, we
- 33:43Speaker 2: just rattled off three guys that you've been around paid
- 33:45Speaker 2: Manning Matt Stafford, Joe Burrow.
- 33:47Speaker 3: What do you see similarly with with Will the drive?
- 33:52Speaker 3: He's got the drive. He wants to be a great player. Uh,
- 33:55Speaker 3: he wants to do whatever it takes to be a
- 33:56Speaker 3: great player. I think one of the cool things about
- 33:59Speaker 3: watching We'll get to play last year and in some
- 34:02Speaker 3: pretty adverse circumstances is you saw his toughness.
- 34:05Speaker 2: You know.
- 34:06Speaker 3: I think that's kind of a common theme with these guys,
- 34:08Speaker 3: is they all have this kind of innate toughness that
- 34:10Speaker 3: that guy's rally around. You know, when you see when
- 34:12Speaker 3: you see a quarterback out there, you know, diving for
- 34:15Speaker 3: a first down, or or taking a shot and making
- 34:17Speaker 3: a great throws, he's taking one on the chin. That's
- 34:20Speaker 3: the kind of guy you want to play for, right
- 34:21Speaker 3: Like you go, you go, yeah, let's I can do
- 34:24Speaker 3: this guy? Can this guy can do enough for me
- 34:26Speaker 3: to play hard with. And you saw all those things
- 34:29Speaker 3: on tape last year, and you saw his physical talent.
- 34:31Speaker 3: Obviously I don't want him jumping and diving and flipping
- 34:35Speaker 3: around for first downs because let's not do that.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Let's not do that.
- 34:38Speaker 3: Let's see that's that's that's the that's the brand. I
- 34:41Speaker 3: mean you need that thing to work. So we'll try
- 34:44Speaker 3: to lessen some of that. But I think he's proven
- 34:46Speaker 3: uh his toughness to the to the guys and the
- 34:48Speaker 3: team and the people in the NFL look at him
- 34:50Speaker 3: and go, all right, this guy he's got a chance.
- 34:52Speaker 3: Now let's give him as much talent around him as
- 34:54Speaker 3: possible and and and see if we can help him
- 34:56Speaker 3: with a system offensively to have some success. And he's
- 35:00Speaker 3: got all the traits that you look for. Though as
- 35:02Speaker 3: far as the drive and determination to be great, UH
- 35:05Speaker 3: is there. And that's that's exciting.
- 35:07Speaker 1: With the with Ran, like you walk into the building
- 35:10Speaker 1: and for the nine years I was with the Titans,
- 35:12Speaker 1: like day one and two of free agency, nothing ever
- 35:14Speaker 1: happened with the Titians. We kind of sit back, let
- 35:16Speaker 1: the first wave go, and you kind of pick pieces
- 35:18Speaker 1: up in the middle market. You guys came in started
- 35:21Speaker 1: just cleaning house immediately, do you and Ran? How clear
- 35:26Speaker 1: is your guys' conversation of where you want the direction
- 35:28Speaker 1: to go? Like, how that's just on the same page. Clear?
- 35:31Speaker 3: Him and I hit it off in the interview process,
- 35:34Speaker 3: and he was a guy that that I just connected
- 35:37Speaker 3: with immediately. You know, you meet people you and you
- 35:39Speaker 3: just there's just something about the connection. You're like, this
- 35:41Speaker 3: is this is the kind of person I want to
- 35:42Speaker 3: go to work with every day. And it has been
- 35:46Speaker 3: that way from the minute we stepped on our first
- 35:48Speaker 3: Zoom interview through today, it's been It's been everything I
- 35:51Speaker 3: thought it would be in terms of our working relationship
- 35:54Speaker 3: and our vision, uh and how we want to execute
- 35:56Speaker 3: the vision and what it's going to take to get
- 35:58Speaker 3: the team competitive to where we like we can contend
- 36:00Speaker 3: for the division and for the playoffs and ultimately for
- 36:02Speaker 3: a Super Bowl someday. That we've been on the same
- 36:05Speaker 3: page with everything and it's been really really fun, Like
- 36:09Speaker 3: it's not like that everywhere, as you guys know, you
- 36:10Speaker 3: don't always get that connection, and it's it's been incredible.
- 36:14Speaker 3: And he's got a great feel for what football is
- 36:16Speaker 3: supposed to look like we see it the same way.
- 36:18Speaker 3: And man, when you go into a free agency period
- 36:21Speaker 3: and you're in lockstep and with Chad Brinker as well,
- 36:24Speaker 3: where you're like, this is the direction we're heading, you
- 36:28Speaker 3: feel really good about it. And then the coolest part
- 36:30Speaker 3: about it is you get to a certain point in
- 36:32Speaker 3: free agency where things don't always you know, we didn't
- 36:34Speaker 3: get everybody we initially thought we were going to get.
- 36:37Speaker 3: And so a guy goes here and a guy goes there,
- 36:39Speaker 3: and now you look around. Well, the difference and the
- 36:42Speaker 3: good teams in free agency is how fast do you pivot?
- 36:44Speaker 3: And so we lose two or three guys and all
- 36:46Speaker 3: of a sudden we look up and we're like, we
- 36:48Speaker 3: should probably check in on Calvin Ridley and see where
- 36:50Speaker 3: that's at. You know, we got some we got money,
- 36:52Speaker 3: we didn't think we're going to have. We lost a
- 36:54Speaker 3: guy or two that we thought we were going to
- 36:55Speaker 3: get back and we didn't. So let's let's check in.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Let's see where it's at. And so then thats started
- 37:00Speaker 3: and kind of swooped in the middle of the night
- 37:02Speaker 3: and stole Calvin out of there. And that was because
- 37:05Speaker 3: you just you gotta fluid. You're able to pivot. You
- 37:08Speaker 3: have a you have a plan in place, and when
- 37:10Speaker 3: the plan doesn't go exactly the same, you know where
- 37:12Speaker 3: the next spot is. And I thought Ram was masterful
- 37:14Speaker 3: in the free agency process.
- 37:16Speaker 2: With with like your philosophies and the way you want
- 37:19Speaker 2: to kind of cultivate your first job being a head coach,
- 37:21Speaker 2: Like what you inherited with the Titans. From the familiar
- 37:24Speaker 2: faces who are still here, what are some of the
- 37:26Speaker 2: directions and vision you wanted to kind of take this
- 37:28Speaker 2: team internally in the building. Yeah, from what you'd understood
- 37:31Speaker 2: most previously.
- 37:32Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, I think the thing about the Titans, I
- 37:35Speaker 3: think really for the history of the of the organization
- 37:37Speaker 3: in Nashville, is that it's always been a tough ass team.
- 37:40Speaker 3: You know, regardless of of the players that have been
- 37:43Speaker 3: on the team, there's just a there's been a tradition
- 37:45Speaker 3: of this toughness. Every time we ever played Tennessee. It
- 37:49Speaker 3: was like, buckle up, boys, like you're gonna get You're
- 37:52Speaker 3: gonna get every it's gonna be everything you got, everything
- 37:55Speaker 3: they got, and it's gonna come down to the end.
- 37:58Speaker 3: And that's how I've always viewed the Titans every time
- 38:01Speaker 3: we've ever played them, for the years of in the NFL.
- 38:02Speaker 3: It's just there's always been good players here. It's always
- 38:05Speaker 3: been tough teams. They've always been well coached, and that
- 38:09Speaker 3: part is the part you want to stay. That's sort
- 38:11Speaker 3: of like an ethos of the organization. You want that
- 38:13Speaker 3: to be a part of who they always are, regardless
- 38:16Speaker 3: of who's in charge. And the other part that I
- 38:18Speaker 3: believe in is that you want guys that love being
- 38:22Speaker 3: around each other, that love being in the building together,
- 38:25Speaker 3: and you want an environment that they love working with
- 38:27Speaker 3: their coaches too, And so there's a there's a feeling
- 38:32Speaker 3: that you want when you when you wake up in
- 38:33Speaker 3: the morning and you got to go to work, and
- 38:36Speaker 3: there's it's one of two ways. Either you're like, fuck man,
- 38:40Speaker 3: I want to go to work today.
- 38:42Speaker 2: I've been there a couple of days.
- 38:43Speaker 3: Yeah, or it's like like hell yeah, I can't wait
- 38:46Speaker 3: to get to work. And that's the what I what
- 38:49Speaker 3: I'm going for is that second option where guys wake
- 38:52Speaker 3: up and can't wait to be in the building because
- 38:53Speaker 3: they love what they're doing and who they're doing it with,
- 38:56Speaker 3: and there's a connection amongst the people that are doing
- 38:58Speaker 3: it with. I g's what you need about where we
- 39:00Speaker 3: are in Tennessee now with Rand and myself is that
- 39:04Speaker 3: it's a very open building and there's a lot of
- 39:07Speaker 3: back and forth. Like you see Ram walking in the
- 39:09Speaker 3: hallways and he's out of practice and he's dapping guys
- 39:12Speaker 3: up and he's talking to him in the lunch room,
- 39:13Speaker 3: and I'm around and I'm visible, and there's our personalities
- 39:17Speaker 3: play off each other, and I think we hired a
- 39:19Speaker 3: coaching staff that's the same way. And I hope the
- 39:22Speaker 3: players feel that when they're in the building. I think
- 39:24Speaker 3: if you ask most of them, they would feel, at
- 39:25Speaker 3: least to start, that's how it feels. But I want
- 39:28Speaker 3: guys that love coming to work and playing football together
- 39:30Speaker 3: because everybody's got money, everybody's got talent, and I think
- 39:34Speaker 3: that's what separates teams is what kind of locker room
- 39:36Speaker 3: do you have? What kind of people are in the building,
- 39:38Speaker 3: And I think that's what matters the most.
- 39:40Speaker 1: When we went into the French the facility, it seemed
- 39:43Speaker 1: like everybody was way more loose. Guys were coming up
- 39:45Speaker 1: to us saying, hey, like it's different, like things is.
- 39:47Speaker 1: The energy is different. There's a higher vibe here that
- 39:50Speaker 1: doesn't take away from anything from John and Vrave, like
- 39:52Speaker 1: they there was a Patriots Way type of vibe where
- 39:54Speaker 1: but holes are tight when you go into a team
- 39:56Speaker 1: meeting and you know you can get exposed if you
- 39:57Speaker 1: have a bad play at practice. So it was like
- 40:00Speaker 1: ones got to be on their ship to know that
- 40:02Speaker 1: on Sunday we're gonna go win, Like, how long once
- 40:05Speaker 1: you got in the building and got with the guys,
- 40:07Speaker 1: did you see the transition of them, like letting their
- 40:09Speaker 1: shoulders down, letting their guard done a little bit. I'll
- 40:11Speaker 1: be like, okay, we can we can mix it up
- 40:13Speaker 1: a little bit with the coach. Yeah, it's headball coaching
- 40:15Speaker 1: a GM. That's that's a tough to guys to mix
- 40:18Speaker 1: it up with and feel.
- 40:19Speaker 3: Comfortable unless you like that.
- 40:20Speaker 1: That's been in the game for a long time.
- 40:22Speaker 3: And I still feel like guys get nervous sometimes around
- 40:25Speaker 3: me and I don't. It's new for me being in
- 40:27Speaker 3: the role too. I realized how.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Much your position.
- 40:30Speaker 3: I feel like cool guy. I'm learning more about the
- 40:33Speaker 3: weight of my words and my interactions and how much
- 40:35Speaker 3: it matters to guys when maybe you don't think twice
- 40:38Speaker 3: about it, but it might be the only time you
- 40:39Speaker 3: interact with the head coach the for a week, and
- 40:42Speaker 3: like that hit that sticks with guys. I remember even
- 40:44Speaker 3: as a player that how that would stick with me.
- 40:45Speaker 3: And I'm much more mindful of that now than maybe
- 40:48Speaker 3: I ever was, And even as the days go by,
- 40:51Speaker 3: it stands out sometimes. But I think that there's a
- 40:55Speaker 3: lot of ways to win in the NFL, there's not
- 40:57Speaker 3: one set way that you have to take. And I
- 41:00Speaker 3: think as long as you're kind of authentic to what
- 41:02Speaker 3: you believe in, you can you can build the program
- 41:05Speaker 3: and in the image that you think is the right way.
- 41:06Speaker 3: And I just believe that there's a when you come
- 41:10Speaker 3: to work and there's a there's a looseness and and
- 41:13Speaker 3: and a joy in the process.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Uh.
- 41:15Speaker 3: It makes a really hard profession a little less hard.
- 41:19Speaker 3: And I think when you get into the the part
- 41:22Speaker 3: that when it is really hard, when you're in December
- 41:24Speaker 3: and it's tough, and you're banged up and it hurts
- 41:27Speaker 3: uh to go practice every day, there's something other than
- 41:30Speaker 3: the money motivating you to go out there and and
- 41:33Speaker 3: play with the boys, Right, I mean that's kind of
- 41:34Speaker 3: what that's what you want. And yeah, I think an
- 41:37Speaker 3: environment that's got some joy to it and some fun
- 41:40Speaker 3: and some energy, I think takes a little bit of
- 41:42Speaker 3: the edge off of how hard it can be. And
- 41:45Speaker 3: it can be hard, you know, it's even when everything's great,
- 41:48Speaker 3: even when everything works well, there's always days where it's hard.
- 41:51Speaker 3: And I think that if you have a locker room
- 41:54Speaker 3: and a building that's conducive to a little bit of
- 41:56Speaker 3: fun and excitement and and authentic. I mean, I am
- 41:59Speaker 3: who I am. I'm gonna I don't want to try
- 42:01Speaker 3: to be anybody else. And that's just always been my personality.
- 42:04Speaker 3: And I think that hopefully that that that shows up
- 42:06Speaker 3: in what our team looks like.
- 42:08Speaker 2: Yeah, you ain't lying. I mean the playing football every
- 42:11Speaker 2: day is it's a grinder, especially like you're saying later
- 42:13Speaker 2: in the year, it gets dark a little earlier. You're
- 42:15Speaker 2: feeling on your nick last week of October is like
- 42:17Speaker 2: the worst the walk through today, or have to lace
- 42:21Speaker 2: some up and you're right too. Like jokes you might
- 42:24Speaker 2: say as a position coach or a coordinator might hit
- 42:27Speaker 2: a little differently to an athlete. But if you're saying
- 42:30Speaker 2: a joke as a head coach, like the athlete could
- 42:31Speaker 2: be driving home like fuck, does he think I'm just rash?
- 42:34Speaker 2: Like you're in your own head, But if he gives
- 42:36Speaker 2: you something positive. Can remember Shanahan one time he came
- 42:39Speaker 2: up all interception machine. This is like my rookie year.
- 42:42Speaker 2: I had had two interceptions in a practice. I just
- 42:44Speaker 2: remember just writing on cloud nine thinking, like, you know,
- 42:47Speaker 2: the head ball coach noticed me, you know, so it's
- 42:51Speaker 2: gotta be like interesting knowing that your words do carry
- 42:54Speaker 2: like a different weight to everybody.
- 42:57Speaker 3: Yeah, if I walked in one day, I walked in
- 43:01Speaker 3: to talk to one of the assistant coaches like I
- 43:04Speaker 3: normally would like when I was a coordinator, and I'm
- 43:06Speaker 3: kind of busting balls. But I kind of sees like
- 43:09Speaker 3: the reaction on his face was like, oh, what like
- 43:13Speaker 3: to do something wrong, I'm buying in trouble And I
- 43:15Speaker 3: was like, Oh, I probably shouldn't. I probably need to
- 43:18Speaker 3: probably need tone that one down, and yeah, make it,
- 43:20Speaker 3: make it not feel so.
- 43:21Speaker 1: Like, tone it down or tell whoever that is, don't
- 43:23Speaker 1: be so soft. Yeah, we're having a good time. It's
- 43:25Speaker 1: gonna be all right.
- 43:26Speaker 2: Jay would be talking about me making plays in space.
- 43:28Speaker 2: I would literally just beg man, I know the front office, though,
- 43:31Speaker 2: the whole coaching stuff must think I just can't tackle
- 43:33Speaker 2: in space.
- 43:34Speaker 1: But in your head about everything, he just said that joke, Like,
- 43:38Speaker 1: I know, I don't. I don't think people understand how
- 43:41Speaker 1: much mental warfare goes on between players and coaches. No,
- 43:43Speaker 1: I don't know if y'all try to do mental warfare,
- 43:45Speaker 1: but I just don't. I'd rather not.
- 43:47Speaker 3: I'd prefer not to do that if I.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Can, which is so difficult though, because you're right like
- 43:51Speaker 1: the words of a head coach when you say anything,
- 43:54Speaker 1: but like an noline coaches due, you could easily write
- 43:56Speaker 1: that off at whatever the head coaches it to you.
- 43:59Speaker 1: You're calling your girl friend, your wife, it's sick family
- 44:01Speaker 1: members like you said this, like what do you think? Good?
- 44:04Speaker 1: Bad or ugly?
- 44:05Speaker 2: You're doing whatever you can entire off season. You're working
- 44:07Speaker 2: on that one thing that was kind of said right.
- 44:11Speaker 3: Forever and then as a heck as as a head coach,
- 44:13Speaker 3: it might even he might not even have thought twice
- 44:14Speaker 3: about what it might have just been like an in
- 44:18Speaker 3: passing comment. Yeah, and all of a sudden, you're just
- 44:20Speaker 3: like you just all in your head about whatever it
- 44:23Speaker 3: was that was said, and the head coach might have
- 44:25Speaker 3: forgot even said it.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Yeah, you talk about having fun. What's your stance on
- 44:29Speaker 1: rookie shows?
- 44:30Speaker 3: You love it about them, You're about them, about them,
- 44:32Speaker 3: rook show, pro rookie show, pro rookie show. However, yea
- 44:37Speaker 3: is you're twenty twenty fours about the show. There's there's
- 44:42Speaker 3: I've not been the recent rookie shows that I've been
- 44:45Speaker 3: around subpar need. The rookies need little help from some
- 44:52Speaker 3: guys out there in the world that know what a
- 44:53Speaker 3: rookie show is supposed to look like. And uh, I've
- 44:57Speaker 3: just not been not been impressed with some of the things.
- 45:01Speaker 3: They're just not funny. Yeah, and there's nothing worse than
- 45:03Speaker 3: going like rookies ship. You're amped up, like I can't
- 45:05Speaker 3: wait to see who they who do they go after? Yeah,
- 45:08Speaker 3: it's like they're kind of they get scared. You can't
- 45:09Speaker 3: be scared. You should know as good as anybody.
- 45:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I was gonna say, you let me sit around
- 45:13Speaker 2: training camp for a couple of weeks.
- 45:15Speaker 3: You'll you'll have a few downs.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Yeah, get some manurisms of yours, and I'll just go
- 45:19Speaker 2: after you.
- 45:20Speaker 1: I'll just go going after the head ball coach is
- 45:23Speaker 1: the best thing to do as a rookie by far,
- 45:25Speaker 1: But it's also the scariest thing to do as a rookie.
- 45:27Speaker 3: Also true, you.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Gotta find that sweet balance being good graces with you,
- 45:31Speaker 1: but also find all the possibly can But if.
- 45:34Speaker 3: If you can get a good rookie show is maybe
- 45:36Speaker 3: one of the better, one of the finer things in
- 45:38Speaker 3: life that.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Sets the tone for there the training camp.
- 45:42Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's at the ending though, like you're like,
- 45:44Speaker 1: everyone's kind of excited to get out of there. This
- 45:46Speaker 1: is going to set the tone for the first game
- 45:48Speaker 1: of the season. Yeah, were all there for the last
- 45:50Speaker 1: time before cuts. What's we're going to.
- 45:52Speaker 2: Get If any rookies are watching this, study coach Callahan
- 45:56Speaker 2: and go after him during.
- 45:56Speaker 1: The Rookie Show. Have to have to have to like
- 45:59Speaker 1: go to let me get the roast of Tom Brady,
- 46:03Speaker 1: go to the family.
- 46:06Speaker 3: Just just lay it all out there and just just
- 46:08Speaker 3: hope the reaction is good.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Yeah. I was just gonna say, who are, in your opinion,
- 46:13Speaker 2: the funnier guys on the team.
- 46:14Speaker 3: I'm still getting to know. I'm getting to know more personalities.
- 46:17Speaker 3: Is that as the days go by, it sure seems
- 46:20Speaker 3: like arden Key's got enough personality for everybody, which is great.
- 46:24Speaker 3: I love it. I enjoy the personality part, Like I
- 46:27Speaker 3: love guys that got something to them and make it
- 46:29Speaker 3: fun Like that's that's awesome. I love when guys feel
- 46:32Speaker 3: like they can be themselves. Arden is probably the one
- 46:35Speaker 3: that stands out the most. Spears has got a good
- 46:40Speaker 3: has got a good kind of a He's quiet, but
- 46:42Speaker 3: he's got a little personality that pops up every now
- 46:44Speaker 3: and again, still trying to figure out which offensive lineman's
- 46:50Speaker 3: got it. You know, they're so they're there. Every day
- 46:52Speaker 3: is like a new day for them right now.
- 46:54Speaker 2: With with coach Bill, I don't know if you find personality.
- 46:57Speaker 3: But there's some guys I think that are that are
- 47:00Speaker 3: candidates for but generally tends to be the defensive guys
- 47:03Speaker 3: that have the most personality and then they're at least
- 47:06Speaker 3: afraid to show it. So I think that there might
- 47:09Speaker 3: be a few of those guys. But I'm hoping that
- 47:10Speaker 3: some of these rookies come with something good in August.
- 47:13Speaker 1: I mean, that's what they got to be the most
- 47:15Speaker 1: focused on. Like playbook comes second to the Rookie Show.
- 47:18Speaker 1: To make sure that you have that rookiees entertainer, the
- 47:20Speaker 1: ball club entertained, Yeah, entertainment, run an entertainment business exactly.
- 47:24Speaker 1: With being a head coach for the first time and
- 47:27Speaker 1: taking the first team meeting, addressing the team, what are
- 47:31Speaker 1: the nerves like, Because every head coach I've ever had,
- 47:33Speaker 1: it's a lot.
- 47:34Speaker 3: There's some nerves in there, for sure, I bet, because
- 47:37Speaker 3: you want to make you want to make a good impression.
- 47:39Speaker 3: Where and again, we've had like twelve team meetings since
- 47:42Speaker 3: the first one, so like the the novelty does wear off,
- 47:46Speaker 3: like after you get through the first one, but that
- 47:47Speaker 3: first one you spend a ton of time thinking about,
- 47:49Speaker 3: and you just want to make sure that when you
- 47:51Speaker 3: come in there that the guys look at you and go, yeah,
- 47:54Speaker 3: I like this guy. I'm I'm willing to listen as
- 47:57Speaker 3: you guys know. You can come in there sometimes and
- 47:59Speaker 3: maybe the first one rubs you the wrong way and
- 48:01Speaker 3: you're kind of like, I don't know about this cat,
- 48:04Speaker 3: you know, like yeah, yeah, And so that's you just
- 48:06Speaker 3: want to make an impression good enough to where you've
- 48:08Speaker 3: bought everyone's attention for another week, you know, right, and
- 48:11Speaker 3: hopefully they can.
- 48:12Speaker 2: See me sure has the same facial expression as the
- 48:14Speaker 2: first time. You know, you're not losing the crowd, right, And.
- 48:17Speaker 3: I try to be my team meeting, they try to
- 48:19Speaker 3: be to the point. You know, I don't. I don't.
- 48:21Speaker 3: I'm not a preacher, you know, I don't. I don't
- 48:23Speaker 3: need to, but I do have messaging that I want
- 48:25Speaker 3: to get across, and so I spend a lot of
- 48:27Speaker 3: time thinking about the messaging and what I'm going to
- 48:30Speaker 3: say and hopefully that in a in a very short
- 48:32Speaker 3: eight to ten minutes, I can convey whatever that is
- 48:35Speaker 3: for the day. And I only have one a week,
- 48:37Speaker 3: so I don't overdo it. Yeah, nobody wants Nobody wants
- 48:40Speaker 3: to hear me talk that much. I know that.
- 48:41Speaker 1: And the fall, you only have one a week in
- 48:43Speaker 1: the fall.
- 48:43Speaker 3: When the season starts, it'll be a Wednesday and a.
- 48:45Speaker 1: Friday Wednesday or Friday Wednesday and Thursday to the rest
- 48:48Speaker 1: of the squad.
- 48:48Speaker 3: Yeah, Thursday is the own day. And then you have
- 48:51Speaker 3: something night before, which can be sometimes as short as
- 48:55Speaker 3: two minutes, or you may go a little longer if
- 48:58Speaker 3: it's a depending on the mood of the team and
- 48:59Speaker 3: then and the game you're getting ready to play. But
- 49:02Speaker 3: try to try to limit the amount of times I
- 49:03Speaker 3: have to go preach in front of everybody.
- 49:05Speaker 2: What kind of coach are you? Night before a game, dude,
- 49:07Speaker 2: I was just thinking, like, are we watching a movie scene?
- 49:11Speaker 3: I got that.
- 49:11Speaker 2: I love something like what what's your go tos bro?
- 49:15Speaker 3: I very much try to keep like the pulse of
- 49:18Speaker 3: like what we might which might need for that week.
- 49:21Speaker 2: You know.
- 49:21Speaker 3: I did something kind of similar with a in Cincinnati
- 49:24Speaker 3: on Saturday mornings. I would do this tie in of
- 49:26Speaker 3: the game plan, and I would mix in whatever messaging
- 49:29Speaker 3: I thought was, you know, might hit home.
- 49:33Speaker 2: Give an example like this messaging, yeah, this movie scene,
- 49:38Speaker 2: if it's no.
- 49:39Speaker 3: I used, actually used quite a bit of The Man
- 49:42Speaker 3: the Arena documentary one year. I kind of took pieces
- 49:45Speaker 3: of it over the course of the season, and then
- 49:47Speaker 3: like every other week I might have something from that
- 49:49Speaker 3: that because there was just so many good things from
- 49:51Speaker 3: that documentary. I thought about, like what a championship team
- 49:55Speaker 3: would feel like, and so I try to use as
- 49:58Speaker 3: many mediums as I can to help convey whatever message
- 50:02Speaker 3: I'd be trying to convey. And I even do that now.
- 50:03Speaker 3: I had one even for a rookie meeting. There's this
- 50:06Speaker 3: clip on the internet with there's a ball boy a
- 50:09Speaker 3: handful of years ago one of the soccer teams. I
- 50:10Speaker 3: think it might have been like Tottenham, where this ball
- 50:12Speaker 3: boy is like super dialed into his job and he
- 50:16Speaker 3: gets the ball. It's on a throwing but the ball
- 50:18Speaker 3: comes out of bounds and he has one in his
- 50:20Speaker 3: hands and he's just his job is to get it
- 50:21Speaker 3: to that guy as quick as possible. Well, he jumps
- 50:24Speaker 3: out of his seat, tosses the ball to the guy.
- 50:25Speaker 3: They throw it in on like a fast break, and
- 50:27Speaker 3: they score because they catch team in transition because ball
- 50:30Speaker 3: boys like on top of.
- 50:31Speaker 2: His shiite clip.
- 50:33Speaker 1: Yeah, you probably say, yeah it was.
- 50:34Speaker 3: It was a viral and it was viral, but it's
- 50:37Speaker 3: it's it's out there, and I showed it to the
- 50:38Speaker 3: rookies and I was like, this is like talk about
- 50:42Speaker 3: finding a role and doing it well. Like here's just
- 50:44Speaker 3: ten year old ball boy or thirteen year old ball
- 50:45Speaker 3: boy that knows that if I do my job really well,
- 50:48Speaker 3: it's going to help us. And yeah, that's it.
- 50:51Speaker 1: Don't They bring him to the locker room after this. Yeah,
- 50:53Speaker 1: they give him like a jersey.
- 50:54Speaker 3: Yeah, and so things like things like that. It's wild.
- 50:57Speaker 3: It was, I mean, it's you know. And then and
- 51:00Speaker 3: the manager goes over like look at how fast and
- 51:02Speaker 3: then transition right, balls in his hand, he's running, they're
- 51:06Speaker 3: on sides and then he ends up with a hitting
- 51:08Speaker 3: a man transition for a score, and like, I think
- 51:10Speaker 3: it was a huge game too. So then the manager's
- 51:13Speaker 3: tapping them up and like things like that, if I
- 51:15Speaker 3: can anything I can find, I use quotes some guys
- 51:19Speaker 3: in the NBA, I've used Steph Curry anything that reinforces
- 51:22Speaker 3: the message. And like I told, I showed the rookies
- 51:24Speaker 3: that and it was like, look, man, find whatever your
- 51:27Speaker 3: role is, wherever they whatever's asked of you, like make
- 51:29Speaker 3: it the most important thing. And if you have a
- 51:31Speaker 3: chance to make a play, then you make the play.
- 51:34Speaker 3: That's how you get recognized. And so it's stuff like that.
- 51:37Speaker 3: I can fire and brimstone it pretty good when I
- 51:39Speaker 3: want to, but I try to save those in my
- 51:41Speaker 3: back pocket for yeah, for when you really need it.
- 51:45Speaker 1: When you talk about playing the Tessa Titans held like
- 51:47Speaker 1: it was an effort toughness and they're very well coached. Yes,
- 51:50Speaker 1: what are the core values you're seeking to bring in
- 51:53Speaker 1: with the Tesnsea Titans with this new.
- 51:54Speaker 3: Wave, just in terms of like what what I want
- 51:57Speaker 3: our team to look for by the.
- 51:57Speaker 1: Things you're going to preach, Like usually a lot of
- 52:00Speaker 1: times like coaches have like these are three things that
- 52:02Speaker 1: we are going to be built on as our foundation
- 52:03Speaker 1: as a team, Like as you being the head coach
- 52:06Speaker 1: of Tesse Titans, Like what are those three pillars?
- 52:08Speaker 3: Yeah, there's there's there's a little bit of nuance to it.
- 52:10Speaker 3: But the main one is we have three c's and
- 52:14Speaker 3: it's character, communication, and connected team, And like, those are
- 52:17Speaker 3: the three things that I think matter the most is
- 52:20Speaker 3: that the character guys. Are they coachable? Are they dependable?
- 52:24Speaker 3: Are they positive? You know what I mean? Is there
- 52:26Speaker 3: are those the guys you want to be around as
- 52:27Speaker 3: a teammate.
- 52:28Speaker 1: Uh.
- 52:29Speaker 3: And then when you talk about the communication part, like
- 52:32Speaker 3: the best teams in the league are are great communicators? Verbal, visual,
- 52:36Speaker 3: you know, especially up front. I use that example all
- 52:38Speaker 3: the time. It's like you got to pick up blitz
- 52:40Speaker 3: Is on third down to win in the NFL, and
- 52:42Speaker 3: you got to be on the same page. And sometimes
- 52:43Speaker 3: it's allowed to ship on the road and you're on
- 52:45Speaker 3: a silent count and how do you how do we
- 52:47Speaker 3: get to calls communicate? How great are we communicating? It
- 52:50Speaker 3: also falls into the off the field part too, like
- 52:52Speaker 3: when something's going on, make sure we're community. If you're
- 52:55Speaker 3: going to be late to a coach on me late
- 52:57Speaker 3: to the team meeting and you called me at seven thirty,
- 53:00Speaker 3: that's good communication. If the meetings at eight, I got
- 53:02Speaker 3: an issue, I need help take care of it. Right,
- 53:04Speaker 3: we can work through that. If you tell me eight
- 53:06Speaker 3: h five. After you show up this year at a car issue,
- 53:07Speaker 3: that's bad communication. That's a fine, that's a fine. Yeah,
- 53:11Speaker 3: So that's what we're looking not to do that. So
- 53:13Speaker 3: those those three seasons. The last one I think I've
- 53:16Speaker 3: kind of touched on is that being a connected team
- 53:18Speaker 3: and being a part of something that's that's bigger than yourself. Like, again,
- 53:21Speaker 3: everybody's got money, everybody's got players, there's talent in the league.
- 53:25Speaker 3: Every game comes down to one possession most of the time.
- 53:27Speaker 3: And what's the separator, And to me, it's the teams
- 53:30Speaker 3: that when you look at them, you feel it when
- 53:31Speaker 3: they play. You're like, man, those dudes are playing for
- 53:34Speaker 3: each other, like you feel it. And you guys have
- 53:36Speaker 3: been on those teams, you played against those teams, You're
- 53:38Speaker 3: like like, damn, these guys are on top of it
- 53:40Speaker 3: and you feel it from their sideline, you feel from
- 53:42Speaker 3: the energy when they make a play, like that's Those
- 53:45Speaker 3: are the things that you want to see. And I
- 53:47Speaker 3: think the football parts are perrequisite, Like you got to
- 53:49Speaker 3: be able to be detailed and have discipline. That stuff
- 53:52Speaker 3: is that's like not negotiable and that's expected. These are
- 53:55Speaker 3: those things, the character, the communication and being a connected team.
- 53:59Speaker 3: Are things that I think make the difference when all
- 54:01Speaker 3: that other stuff is equal.
- 54:03Speaker 2: That's awesome that we talked about the gun slingers with Stafford, Manning,
- 54:08Speaker 2: Levis and Burrow. But I don't want to go I
- 54:13Speaker 2: don't want to not bring up Browning last year getting
- 54:16Speaker 2: thrown into the fire in a very high pressure situation. Yeah,
- 54:21Speaker 2: talk about him a little bit because I feel like
- 54:22Speaker 2: you it's like when that happened, it's like, well the Bengals,
- 54:25Speaker 2: they're out of it. Yeah, but you guys, you know
- 54:27Speaker 2: obviously you didn't didn't win the Super Bowl or anything. Yeah,
- 54:31Speaker 2: there was like zero pain.
- 54:31Speaker 3: We were in it.
- 54:32Speaker 2: Yeah, you guys were in it right there until the end.
- 54:34Speaker 2: Like talk about talk about Browning a little bit.
- 54:37Speaker 3: Man, what a what a what a story?
- 54:39Speaker 1: Really?
- 54:39Speaker 3: I mean, he's we we we stole him off the
- 54:42Speaker 3: practice squad before we played Minnesota in twenty twenty one,
- 54:45Speaker 3: and we brought him in to ultimately sort of flush
- 54:49Speaker 3: him for information. You know, they cut the quarterback loose.
- 54:54Speaker 1: Yeah, the water board him, get him out of there.
- 54:57Speaker 3: When he came in and we're like, oh, really this
- 54:59Speaker 3: this guy think because you know, we like this tape
- 55:01Speaker 3: and obviously we didn't bring him in because just for
- 55:03Speaker 3: that we thought he was a good player. But that's
- 55:06Speaker 3: just how the league works. You cut guys loose and
- 55:08Speaker 3: were playing in week one. So we signed him and
- 55:10Speaker 3: he comes in. He starts like like, Wow, this guy's
- 55:13Speaker 3: really smart. And then he's a little bit undersize, and
- 55:16Speaker 3: he doesn't look he's not like a outwardly great looking athlete,
- 55:19Speaker 3: and you're like, all right, is this can this guy
- 55:21Speaker 3: play at all? And we weren't sure. And he starts
- 55:23Speaker 3: practicing and you're like, he does some things that you like.
- 55:26Speaker 3: He can play on time, he can process, and so
- 55:29Speaker 3: we just sort of kept him and he developed and
- 55:32Speaker 3: he did a really nice job. And he was with
- 55:34Speaker 3: us for I think two and a half years up
- 55:35Speaker 3: to the chance to play, and he never really got
- 55:37Speaker 3: to play. Played a little bit in the preseason and
- 55:40Speaker 3: it was like, all right, well Jake's gonna play. Let's see,
- 55:42Speaker 3: let's see what the guy's got. But we felt really
- 55:45Speaker 3: confident that he would perform well because he works his
- 55:48Speaker 3: ass off. He studies like crazy. And then when you
- 55:52Speaker 3: look back at his career, he started for four years
- 55:54Speaker 3: at Washington, they went to a rose boy. He was
- 55:57Speaker 3: a good college football player. Yeah, and he's got all
- 56:00Speaker 3: the makeup that would make you a good player in
- 56:02Speaker 3: the NFL.
- 56:03Speaker 2: Uh.
- 56:03Speaker 3: And he went out there, man, and he played awesome
- 56:07Speaker 3: in a in a situation where it's hard to play, like,
- 56:10Speaker 3: you know, the franchise quarterback gets hurt and like everybody's
- 56:13Speaker 3: spirits are down. All of a sudden, Jake go's out
- 56:14Speaker 3: there and guys were like, oh, fuck, yeah, we can
- 56:17Speaker 3: do this, you know what I mean, Like, yeah, like
- 56:19Speaker 3: I'm not out of Yeah, we're not out of let's
- 56:21Speaker 3: go and uh. And he brought some some life back
- 56:23Speaker 3: into the team. And I give him a ton of
- 56:25Speaker 3: credit because he was really open about what was good
- 56:27Speaker 3: and what was bad, Like, hey, don't call that play.
- 56:30Speaker 3: I don't like this play. Here's the things that I
- 56:31Speaker 3: need to play like. He was very vocal about what
- 56:35Speaker 3: he felt like he could succeed with. And that's a
- 56:37Speaker 3: ton of credit goes to him because you know, when
- 56:39Speaker 3: you're in a position as a player, like you're like, oh,
- 56:41Speaker 3: if I say this, they might tell me to they can't.
- 56:44Speaker 3: I know you won't do it. You were afraid to
- 56:45Speaker 3: say something. You just you just want to do what's
- 56:49Speaker 3: asked of you, and he goes in the first Pittsburgh
- 56:51Speaker 3: game and we were kind of like, are you sure
- 56:52Speaker 3: you feel good about this? And he's like, yeah, just
- 56:54Speaker 3: call the game how you called it for Joe. I'll operate,
- 56:56Speaker 3: I'll play well. And he didn't, and he came back
- 56:59Speaker 3: the next weekend is like, don't call this, don't call this,
- 57:02Speaker 3: don't call this. Call these things. Give me more peer progression,
- 57:05Speaker 3: give me a chance to work through a read, find
- 57:08Speaker 3: me some things. And he was like, all of a sudden,
- 57:09Speaker 3: it was like, oh not, thank you. This is what
- 57:12Speaker 3: we need from you, and we'll do whatever it is
- 57:14Speaker 3: you need to do to feel like you can play well.
- 57:16Speaker 3: And so a ton of credit to him for being
- 57:18Speaker 3: able to say that. But he went out there and
- 57:20Speaker 3: showed that he's a legitimate quarterback in the NFL. And
- 57:23Speaker 3: when I got the job, he was joking. He's like,
- 57:25Speaker 3: you know, it's he was kind of messed up. He's like,
- 57:29Speaker 3: I've gotten more guys have gotten the head jobs when
- 57:32Speaker 3: I've played, and he's like, do people think I'm that
- 57:36Speaker 3: shitty that I play well enough? And like it's now
- 57:39Speaker 3: everyone's a great a great coach. And I'm like, I said,
- 57:42Speaker 3: that's pretty backwards, I do agree, but hilarious, bro.
- 57:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it was almost like you know, when you get
- 57:49Speaker 2: hired to everybody, we're hyping everything else. It's like, I mean,
- 57:52Speaker 2: Joe b went down and they were still contenders with
- 57:54Speaker 2: Jake Browning. Not like shitting on Jake, but you're like
- 57:56Speaker 2: everything can still.
- 57:59Speaker 3: But yeah, yeah, inadvertently you do. Yeah and uh and
- 58:03Speaker 3: so we laughed about it. But but I do think
- 58:05Speaker 3: he he deserves a ton of credit for how well
- 58:07Speaker 3: he played. He's kind of a self made I mean,
- 58:10Speaker 3: he's worked his he's worked his tail off to get
- 58:12Speaker 3: in position to when you get that opportunity to go
- 58:15Speaker 3: to go play well. And he's gonna play in the
- 58:17Speaker 3: NFL for a long time because of it. And I
- 58:20Speaker 3: love the dude. I think he's outstanding. He's got a
- 58:21Speaker 3: great personality, and I was really happy for him that
- 58:25Speaker 3: he had a chance to show his talents like that,
- 58:27Speaker 3: And and he was open and honest enough with us
- 58:30Speaker 3: to help us put him in a position and that's
- 58:31Speaker 3: ultimately our job.
- 58:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:33Speaker 3: Yeah, but he's a good but he is a he's
- 58:36Speaker 3: a good football player.
- 58:37Speaker 1: Yeah, play him on the Titan someday.
- 58:40Speaker 3: Who knows.
- 58:42Speaker 1: He's he's got options.
- 58:45Speaker 3: I think its under contract for like a year or two,
- 58:47Speaker 3: two years, I think for oh you know, yeah, you're
- 58:51Speaker 3: very aware.
- 58:51Speaker 1: Yeah, so you're saying those quarterback controversy in Cincinnati right now,
- 58:57Speaker 1: is that, you know what?
- 58:58Speaker 3: Absolutely big debate. Who's gonna be not sure, who's gonna be,
- 59:02Speaker 3: might might be Joe, who.
- 59:04Speaker 1: Knows, who knows. It's the only time we'll tell them that. Hey, hey,
- 59:08Speaker 1: you guys doing listen to an audio right now? Huh?
- 59:11Speaker 1: Just driving to work or something like that and joining yourself.
- 59:13Speaker 1: Sometimes podcasts are great, but you know what makes them,
- 59:16Speaker 1: this a little bit better? Some nicotine man. And I
- 59:19Speaker 1: know those big tobacco corporations that you go into the
- 59:22Speaker 1: gas station. They're super convenient, easy to grab from me.
- 59:25Speaker 1: If I'm looking for a nicotine that's not only going
- 59:28Speaker 1: to give me the sensation of feeling chipper and up
- 59:30Speaker 1: there and feeling great all the time, I'm also looking
- 59:32Speaker 1: for an opportunity to help out the mom and pop
- 59:35Speaker 1: shop esque and the brand I'm holding in my hand.

- 1:01:31Speaker 1: a friend have a great day at work or going
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: home wherever you're at right now. I love you guys,
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: see you. You talk about personalities of players, and now
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: more than ever, it seems like the landscape of NFL
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: is changing with all the nile stuff in college guys
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: are coming into the league with money already. Do you
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: see that change in personalities as new guys start to
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: come in, Yeah, you do.
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: It's different. I mean it is a little bit different. Now,
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: Let's not pretend like guys weren't coming in the league
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: with money.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Before, right, Not at UCLA obviously, definite.
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: Certainly not there. Yeah, maybe not in Nebraska either, but
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: unless Michigan, Michigan. I don't know. I feel like that's
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: I wish, Yeah, I.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: Wish we had the sec treatment. I got a free
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: meal once. I bring it up all the time.
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: One time.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: I got a free meal one time, and that fired
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: me up.
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: You get like one hundred dollars handshake somewhere.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: No, never, I never got offered a dime, and it
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: bugs me because I would love the opportunity.
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: To take somebody's money.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: Yes, I'd ever hear about is they just put money
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: like on a turnover on the sideline. You hear about
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: a coach at a thousand, and then another coach would
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: match it, and then in college and Sue would get it.
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: And it's like, oh, all right.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: Yeah, because you know Sue was getting paid. You know
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: something's happening. But Stafford he I heard stories about him
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: being at Georgia and be there'll be five hundred thousand
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: dollars in his mailbox for him to stay for another year.
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: Stafford, Yes, I mean those those are all You hear
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: those stories all the time.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: To Georgia, right, yeah, because I get him and Bradford
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: mixed up sometimes.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: If you had a guess, would you think that's true?
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: I mean, I think I think it will. I think
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: I think some of it gets there's they're probably like
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: fishing stories, like the fish gets bigger as the years go. Buy.
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: I think there's probably some of but crazy, I'm sure
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: at all. I'm sure they're I mean they're not made up,
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: like I'm sure those stories all happened pretty regularly, I
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: would imagine. But the kids coming in now, I mean
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: you it's there. It's a different style, Like they've already
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: been paid, you know, so this isn't the first time
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: they've had money. And I think that that part is unique,
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: that the money thing isn't new. But what is new
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: for them is that now they can't transfer and they
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: are under contract, and I think that's a different mindset
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: for them, like they're used to being able to kind
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: of really move, you know, wherever they want. College football
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: transfer two three times, and nothing wrong with transfering, but
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: there's it's a different mindset, like when things are hard
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: in the NFL, you're under contract and you're either gonna
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: get cut, you're gonna figure it out. And I think
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: that's where it changes for guys is that they're not
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: used to that that binding agreement that doesn't really exist
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: in college football anymore, and that they have to play
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: well to get money, you know, like that's the other.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: In the NFL, they come up and ask for trades
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: all the time. Yeah, your boy in Cincinnati, he said
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: he wasn't getting paid enough. Hendrickson, I mean it's news
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: that he asked for trade, public public knowledge, blood airing
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: the boy out. But you are constructually obligated you publi
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: should think about that a little bit.
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: But I think there that is the difference, though, is
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: that there's no like what I do. Like, there's a
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: resilience factor to maybe some of how some of these
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: kids who come in college where the minute they don't
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: like something, they leave, and the adjustment period comes when
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: they get to the NFL and it's like, well I
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: don't like this and it's like sorry, you know, like
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: you you don't have a choice. Like so that part
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: I think is where it changes. The money part I
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: don't think has changed kids other than they just have
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: more experience with money, and so you're not as concerned
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: about maybe some of the things that a kid for
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: the first time getting money. Some of these kids are
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: been making money for four years, right being taxes, and
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: you know that's not new for him.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it almost might be a good thing actually that
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: they're making a little bit money in college.
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: Yeah, especially some of the the guys that are getting
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: big money. You know, they're used to getting big money,
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: and they're probably getting big money because they're good players,
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: and so they likely are going to get pretty good
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: money when they get the NFL by their draft position.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: So and hopefully have like the right teams kind of
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: already kind of building and structured around themselves to make
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: it an easy transition.
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: You would hope. I think there is a little bit
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: of a uh, there's some there's probably some predatory opportunities
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: out there for guys, and some of these guys in
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: college that don't know anything. And when you're talking about
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: putting people around you, you just hope that they're making
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: good decisions with it.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: Yeah, gotta have a team. You have a team that
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: checks everybody. Yeah, Derrick Henry, Yeah, long time time and
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: going to be obviously in the Ring of honor eventually,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: no doubt. Was there a conversation with you and RAN
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: have to try to reach out and say, hey, let's
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: do this one more year.
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: They touch base, you know, RAN had a relationship with them,
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: obviously being there for a year, and they went back
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: and forth on what the money would look like, and
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: we just we had the holes that we had to fill.
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: The money would be allocated initially elsewhere. And the running
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: back market went pretty good. I mean there's some guys
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: that got paid. It was higher money than I think
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: maybe we had projected to start across the league for
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: the running back position. And that's good for those guys,
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: that's great. And so when you get into those positions
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: where you know we're trying to fill multiple holes in
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: a free agency period, it's like where do you want
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: to allocate the money and how do you want to
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: spend it? And I think that I would have been
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: absolutely open to Derek coming back. I think it felt
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: like Derek was ready for something new. And then the
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: money part when it happened. Those conversations go back and forth,
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: and ultimately it was for both parties, probably the best
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: decision at the end of the day, for him and
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: for us. But I mean, he is he was the
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: Tennessee Titans for the better part of the last six years,
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: probably seven years, where I mean, that's what you thought.
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: You go out of Tennessee, you thought Derrick Henry and
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: look forward to day when he his name gets to
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: go up in that stadium because he's earned that right. Yeah,
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: to be up there with the greats. He's he's phenomenal.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: Getting to hang out with you at the facility and
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: asking if you'd come on the bus. So she started
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: to learn that you were a bit of a STOOLI
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: in your younger days.
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: I was, Yeah, it was I was.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: I always know that you're on the bus. Did you
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: hit the group chat up?
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: Hey, I didn't tell anybody. Yeah, it was going to
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: be there's I got some old from my high school
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: buddies will be pretty pretty fired up. Yeah, Yeah, that
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: was pretty far.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I was. I I feel like I was on
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: the I was on the I was on the front
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: end of the bar stool experience. I mean it was
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: back when it was just a handful of those guys blogging,
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: when it was just the blog it was. It was
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: a two thousands.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: The Blackout party is that what it was called.
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: My brother, my brother and my sisters went and went
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: to a couple of those blackout parties. They're they're only
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: my brother, only eighteen months younger than me, and they
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: would always tell me about the blackout parties and you
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: see the videos online. It was. It was a it
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: was a different time on the internet, that's for sure.
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: But yeah, I remember. I mean those guys are obviously
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: Big Cat and and Dave and those guys. I've been
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: reading those things for probably pretty close to when they
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: from when they started and laugh for a lot of
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: laughed a lot for a long time reading this stuff.
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: So yeah, I'm I'm a I'm a Steeleye. I've been
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: I've been one for a really long time. I feel
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: like it's got to be a weird part of like
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: I'm be forty years old in June, and I think
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: there's like this whole generation of like middle aged steelies
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: that were there. No question, It's like, man, it's been
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: deaveen doing this a long time.
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: It's the inception. Yeah, like every time I see big Cat,
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: he's got more and more gray hair.
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: You just I can relate, I can relate.
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: Yeah, who's your favorite? Who's your favorite personality? Well, hold
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: on before you.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: Did, maybe we should tear talk this for him. Okay,
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: are you are you familiar with tear talk? No, so
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: tear talk is we're just based. It's a ranking system.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's You're gonna start with three and work
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: us up to one. You can give as much context
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: or as those context as you want. The tier talk
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: will be your favorite barstool personalities excluded. All right, we'll
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: be got there. Yeah, you start with three, start with three.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: You can give an honorable mention too, if you're having
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: a hard time.
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: Okay, I mean I would probably be the originals of
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: the guys that I'm probably talking about. I would say
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: I would say my three. Okay, three would be I'll
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: probably never be invited back here, But three would probably
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: be Dave. You'll probably never let me back here.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: That's because he's too low or Dave gets gets mad
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: at us a lot. Both.
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: I'm a big, I'm a big. I'm a big supporter,
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: so I want to appreciate it. I would say two
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: would be KFC. I used to love listen to reading
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: KFC's blogs back in the day. And then one would
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: be Big Cat. I thought Big Cat was his humor
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: and my humor were very similar, and so those going.
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: He is, he's a machine man. I don't know how
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: he does. I don't know how he keeps. I mean
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: he's like he's like Internet Kobe or something like he
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: just got this.
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: Oh, don't tell him that.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: Yeah, cut that his recall incredibility. You'll have a conversation
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: with him in four years later. He'll remember it. There
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: was a clip that came out yesterday about him and
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: KB on the YAC and it was back in October
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: about him putting a razor blade in some of kb's
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: food and eventually he's gonna give it to him with
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: him the calendar year, and he did it yesterday.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: He's like an elephant, bro, he is.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: He really is an elephant. I thought that was he
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: actually truth be told.
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: He's got a question that he proposed to you.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: Is this the is this the one?
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: Yeah, it's the one that we don't like.
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: See BC to BC H first of all. Thank you
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: for being a STOOLI and supporting us all these years.
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: I got a question for you on taking a piss
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: while I do this. I got a question for you
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: on the bus. We'd love to have you on the show.
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: And I was looking at the calendar June twenty fifth,
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: if you want to come to Chicago, would love to
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: have you, whole family, anyone who wants to come up
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: June twenty fifth, Come to Chicago. We'll do an interview,
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: we'll do the gamblet, We'll have a great time. So
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: that's I guess my question is, can you come to
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: Chicago June twenty five and come on pmtant to some context.
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: The context on that is our Beer Games Championships of
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: the World is on June twenty fifth. He is, he's
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: on the list. He can't he's back out. He can't
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: back out, he can't pass to come. He has he
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: can't back out. Yeah, he's got this running bit happening
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: right now that he can't back out. And since we've
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: had to do a couple hurt we've had a couple
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: of bumps in the road with the Beer Olympics, with
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: the Beer Games. Sure, he likes to give the boys
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: a hard time. So yeah, I guess he wants you
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: to come on part of my take, which I'm sure that's.
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: A yes absolutely June twenty fifth.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: We're gonna have to do. He's busy June twenty five, busy.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: Un twenty five.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: We also it's a vacation time for y'all, too right.
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: It is it is. I'm moving. I'm moving in that
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: very short time frame from Cincinnati, finally down here, living
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: in a house by myself, in an empty house with
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: a bed. That's the life.
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: That college lifestyle. The matches on the floor, wires everywhere.
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: TV lifestyle, sitting on like a folding chair to watch TV.
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: You kind of do enjoy it a little bit, huh.
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: There's part of it that brings back to your roots,
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: no doubt. But yeah, that might be a tough swing,
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: but we can look into it. Maybe next offseason, maybe
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: next off the next off season, because they will take
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: you out to Chicago and just let whoever your boys are.
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: You heard him saying wants to come. You should come
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: with an entire crew.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: And I'll say this about Chicago. Their HQ there is incredible.
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: It's like a fantasy factory basketball. They have literally everything
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: you want, basketball court, golf simulator, Chef Donnie and the
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: Cornhill makey, whatever you want. It's some of the best
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: food you'll ever have.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: It's like the tightest facility without the indoor, without the
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: football field. Yeah, it's crazy, it is.
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: It is cool. It's very cool. You'd really enjoy it
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: cooling too.
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: My my whole family is from Chicago. Really yeah. My
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: dad's born and raised his South Side Chicago. My grandfather
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: was a Chicago cop. Okay, good old Irish Chicago cup. Yeah.
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: Nice. Are you you grew up a Bears fan?
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: I did.
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: Grew up a Bears fan until obviously I became a
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: fan of my dad wherever we moved to. But when
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: my dad was coaching in college at University Wisconsin, that
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: was like the Bears were you know, he still I
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: did still watches like every White Sox game.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: Oh really, Oh.
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: Yeah, but not very good.
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: It runs deep in Chicago.
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: Deep is deep. So my whole family, everybody, my mom,
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: Mom's went to Norse, the whole family from Chicago.
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: Were you just a massive fan of your dad growing up?
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: Oh? Yeah, yeah, he was always the man always. I mean,
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: it's you know, yeah, where you're like he doesn't know everything.
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: I never I know, I did not really Oh yeah,
- 1:13:38Speaker 3: I mean god, I need some not. I mean so well,
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: I'll say this like my dad was My dad is
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: an intimidating personality, and I was the oldest of four
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: and so I didn't ever have It was like I
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: was scared to death to make a mistake because I
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: you know, you you hear him, yeall he got a
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: real loud voice. It's intimidating. Yeah, And I did not
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: want to get I didn't want to get in trouble.
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: It's all my friend, ude, you got to like I
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: had like a ten thirty curview in high school for
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: a while and all my boys, you gotta rebel, don't
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: you can't hold They're like they're trying. Well, you know
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: it's like, i mean, ten thirties kind of early. That
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: is it's early, but this is weekend curfew. Oh yeah,
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: this is all the time.
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: Like this is yeah seven o'clo lights. Yeah, the game's over,
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: You're going home home. No parties for me, none, And
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: that's the best. Then we don't forget about ahead.
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: But so that was the I was scared to death
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: of Like I was not rebellious to my dad because
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: I knew I watched my dad coach these guys for
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: all these years, and how he his demeanor and his style.
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: I was like, I don't I don't need to cross that.
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: I don't need those problems.
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: Growing up?
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: Were you like, were you a troublemaker or a straight shooter?
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: The whole time?
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: Was pretty straight shooter. Yeah. I had enough. I had enough,
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: probably enough mischief, but not anything serious enough to really
- 1:14:47Speaker 3: get in trouble.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: What is the most devious thing you ever did as
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: a young team? Probably just tp a house, Probably egged
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: the house. That's a that's his next step. That's egging
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: is one thing.
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: He'll throw the toilet paper of the tree. But the
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: this somebody gets out of carton of eggs, he's probably thinking,
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: if I want to be he's the.
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: First one for me. I can't go that far.
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that was It was nothing more like nothing
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: more than that. It was never anything I didn't.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: Just fun classic boys being boys stuff.
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: Do you ever get in big trouble? I did?
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: Yes, I did once, and I was like middle school
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: probably mm hmm. I I can't really want to tell
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: the story, but I am because it's funny and whatever.
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: When I was in middle school, we me and my
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: little neighbor next door, my buddy I used to run
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: around with all the time we we used we decided
- 1:15:33Speaker 3: we were going to make a torch. Parents went home.
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: We run on and we wrapp all this toilet paper
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: on a stick and dip it in gasoline and we're
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: like swinging it around. We're middle school and we're swinging
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: it around, and we're having a hell of a time.
- 1:15:45Speaker 3: And we're in these woods behind our house, and we
- 1:15:50Speaker 3: would try to be responsible. We had water, put put
- 1:15:52Speaker 3: the put the torch in the water. You know it's
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: and I look out like an hour later, and nobody
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: my parents went home. I look out like an hour
- 1:15:59Speaker 3: later in the entire for the entire force is on
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: fire behind our house. I mean it was like fire department.
- 1:16:08Speaker 3: I mean it's like it's like flame. Yeah, and we
- 1:16:11Speaker 3: you know, we didn't mean to obviously, but but it's
- 1:16:15Speaker 3: like there's you know, it's a patch of I mean,
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: it wasn't small, it wasn't like a whole fun but
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: I mean there was trees on I mean, it was
- 1:16:20Speaker 3: on fire. The fire warm had to come and put
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: it out and uh. And but at the time, my
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: parents weren't home. I was there, but I was home myself,
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: and the fire department came. They put it out and
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: they left, and I was like, I'm in the clear.
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: They're never going to know. And so my buddy whose
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: parents were home, they saw it and they put the
- 1:16:42Speaker 3: clamps on him, and he cracked.
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: No, yeah, he cracked.
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: He definitely boy cracked.
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Do you have a talk with him after my brother?
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: You got it?
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: Like, come on, man, how they get him to crack?
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: It's so easy because we were like relatively good kids.
- 1:16:56Speaker 3: Like, it wasn't like he was. We weren't trying to
- 1:16:58Speaker 3: do anything wrong. I think he was. Yeah, But then
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: so my parents know. And then my dad asked me
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: on multiple occasions, Hey, do you know anything about what
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: happened back there behind the house. Nope, no idea. I
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: mean lied to his face, lied to his face, and
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: I thought I was getting away with it, and little
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: did I know, I was just getting set up. That
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: was just he was just stringing me along, just waiting.
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: And that was the most mad I think I've ever
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: seen him, not because of what we did, but because
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: I lied to him about and he gave me ample
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: opportunities to tell him the truth, and I just stuck
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: with it.
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: So he did it a few different occasions. Maybe the
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: first time he let it pass. I'll see if he
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: thinks about it a little bit more, old man, that's
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: a vet move.
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: Yes, that is a vet move. So when you wonder
- 1:17:41Speaker 3: why I probably wouldn't rebel when I was in high school,
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: I saw that and I was like, Nope, no, thanks, No,
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: I don't need that.
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: And I don't need those problems. That's a savvy dad move.
- 1:17:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: My dad would go out of town in high school
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: and he'd be like, you're not all out in the house.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: I go to your mom session all in the house.
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: And one time we had a party and I came
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: home and I was like, you you've been in the
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: house at all? Like no, But he set up like
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: T shirts and certain things in parts of the house.
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: I was I was just a little bit dirty. But
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: he remembered every spot he put it in, so if
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: it was moved it all. When he got back, you know,
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: somebody was in the house. I folded. It was like
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: ten people at the house too. It wasn't even a
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: cool party. It was a kickback kickback. But yeah, man,
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: dads are good like that.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: Yeah, Billy ever gets you. Oh yeah, yeah, I think
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: that one that comes to my mind. I think I've
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: totaled before. But my parents were out of town because
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: my brother. I'm a junior in high school. So my brother,
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: he's a sophomore, absolute stud wrestler, he was. My parents
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: said that I had to wrestle that year, I'd be
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: grounded all winter. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah said it helped
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: me in football, which there is truth to wrestling helping
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: in football. But my brother had a It was my
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: it was my first week weekend, like on the squad
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: and they're wrestling your boy JV junior and I thought
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: it was so disrespectful. But brother, Yeah, my brother, who's
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: a sophomore there, traveled out to Kansas City for this
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: wrestling tournament for the varsity team. And so I'm just
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: back at the house by myself. So I throw, you know,
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: I throw a party, nice little banger, and I'm talking.
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: It's ever clear.
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: It's it's the cheapest of the cheap, yeah, the most
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: of the most the plastic stuff.
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, it was rowdy to where basically
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: I had to be on the bus at like five
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: point thirty in the morning the next morning to go
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: to the JV wrestling tournament. And we were up all night,
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: and I mean we're you know, we did. I was driven.
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: We take somebody home and drop them off there puking
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: in the driveway. As we're dropping them off. F I'm like, hey,
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: you gotta hurry, like we have to leave so I
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: can make the bus. And I'm still sauced from the night,
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: and uh, We're riding up. I'm trying to like get
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: some sleep. It's like an hour and a half bus ride.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: And then I start texting the boys like I didn't
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: clean anything up, and my parents are going to get
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: home before our bus gets back from the tournament. So
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: just terrible planning on my part. So I'm texting like
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: Logan and John and the boys. So I clean it up,
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: and they did their absolute best. They got some stuff
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: messed up, but they did what they could to clean
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: up the place. Well. I get back, by the way
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: one the JV wrestling tournament did not get scored on hungover,
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: so just destroyed. But I get back and dude, my
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: mom finds this. There was a condom sitting out on
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: the end table that was being played with because forty
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: year old Virgin had came out and he was playing
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: Aquaman on his hand, yeah, with the condom, and my
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: boy was doing that. I mean, there was girls over,
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: and there's fun to be had, but that particular loss
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: that we took was one that shouldn't have even been taken,
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: you know what I mean, And it was not fun fun.
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: My dad was one of those where it was the
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: same thing. I never wanted to be in trouble by
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: my parents. And I remember again another another night where
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: we got uh uh, where we got caught drinking and
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: partying and stuff, and my parents came over and logan
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: my buddy, he's like my best friend and his mom
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: were pulling in the driveway and she's like, you guys
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: want to have a party. Boys will have a party
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: and just sit out on the grass. We're all like
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: wind up, sitting down like you know, Indian style, and
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: all your parents are coming over. We got you motherers
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: type of thing. My dad comes over and bro like
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: you know your boys, got like tears in his eyes,
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: like I'm like, Dad, I'm not going home, and he
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: like takes his glasses off. He's on like the other
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: side of the dining room table and we're in Logan's
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: house and he's like, son, you're coming home and starts
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: like walking around and I just start like going around
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: the table with it.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: Oh bro.
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: But it was not good. It was We've had We've
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: had some run ins back in the day in all
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: and my dad it's always the same speech, like you
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: got the world ahead of you, like you have at
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: this point. I had like one offer from like Illinois.
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: Yeah, no, Dad, that's a good call, dad, Illinois.
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: K stayed at the time, and he was like, you're
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: gonna you're gonna mess this up, Like you're gonna fuck
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: this off. And but we had it. We had some
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: run in, some stories that definitely come to my mind,
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: and I'm like, fuck, the boys were in some situations.
- 1:22:15Speaker 3: Now. You never want to piss off your parents, No,
- 1:22:18Speaker 3: not not if you especially when you got one that's
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: not one you want to mess with either.
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: Bro, you know there's a story I told her. My
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: dad he's like, you ever want to shot at the title,
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: you just let me know. And he's like this close
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: to me and he just doesn't blow me kiss, but
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: he just goes and in my face and I'm like,
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: all right, all right, dad, and he's like, you ever
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: want a shot at the time.
- 1:22:39Speaker 3: A senior oh, a senior school.
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: You should have swung on that man.
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: Bro, I don't know. There's a different now. I would,
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: you know, out of respect, it would never happen. Would
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: obviously take take advantage of him now, But dude, there
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: was I mean, as long as you could have respect
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: for an old man on beating your ass, he had
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: every bit of it up.
- 1:22:58Speaker 3: And I'm not gonna lie to you guys like I
- 1:23:00Speaker 3: wouldn't be surprised, like my dad is, so probably with
- 1:23:02Speaker 3: my ask, we.
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: Don't want to Bill, Bill, might you think he would? Dude, Bill?
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: But this I mean yoga is. Don't sleep on yoga.
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: But this man's a yoga at six am probably every morning.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: Zen Oh yeah Bill, Yeah, Bill Kellen.
- 1:23:16Speaker 3: Yeah, he can do the splits and handstands and stuff.
- 1:23:18Speaker 3: Oh okay, I'm not I had no idea, Like I don't.
- 1:23:21Speaker 3: You don't want to mess I wouldn't mess with him.
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I would. That's the thing that time.
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you know you're good. That's the thing too with
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: like Bill, like you know, he carries this intimidating demeanor,
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: but you know when he's saying something to you, he
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: has he has your respect because you know, in his world,
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: he's putting in all of that work, not just in studying,
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: but in lifestyle with the yoga and watching him prep
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: all the way up until kickoff, like laying on his
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: back and just like studying his notebook and writing down
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: final notes. And he is the man like I've always
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: had a lot of respect for Bill.
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: I appreciate glad.
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: I never got to you never had to partake in
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: his individual drills, but you always love to.
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: Get the sledge.
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I always loved the.
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: Sled Bertha and Olga Olga.
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: Yeah, God did he create those?
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: Yeah, he invented the sled.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: Do we invent the actual sled?
- 1:24:09Speaker 3: Actual sled the sled that they were hitting, no ship,
- 1:24:12Speaker 3: yea that actual actual invention of the sled. Do we
- 1:24:15Speaker 3: have as Yeah?
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: This is a wild.
- 1:24:20Speaker 5: J C.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: Is a he that's a unit of a man. Yes,
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: and he's being he got folded the first time he
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: see him start to figure it out, and they figured
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: it out. There's no way anyone ever does good on
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: that the first time.
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: Never, No, And that's why my dad's laughing at him
- 1:24:32Speaker 3: because they he bet him. Jasey's like, no, I got
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: I'll get it, I'll move and my Dad's.
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: Like okay, just hands in his pockets.
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: But yeah, they they invented that sled when he was
- 1:24:42Speaker 3: in Washington.
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: That's that's impressive right there, resetting the hips driving, that's impressive.
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: State they call it taking another bite. He takes another
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: bite and gets going. But that sled, he he he
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: worked with Ray Crowd, the company, and they they sort
- 1:24:56Speaker 3: of developed it together and made that that sled. The
- 1:25:00Speaker 3: angles and the and the handles where your hands fit
- 1:25:03Speaker 3: and like just it feels more like what a defensive
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: lineman feels like coming off the ball versus like the
- 1:25:09Speaker 3: old squared up sleds.
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: Yeah, with JC drafting him, getting your first opportunity to
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: get your hands on him a little bit. Is there
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: anything that surprised you at him that you did that
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: maybe he didn't have or is he as advertised as advertised?
- 1:25:21Speaker 3: I mean, we felt like there was there was two
- 1:25:23Speaker 3: linemen that we felt like we're worthy of top ten picks,
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: and that's Joe Alton and JC and the two guys
- 1:25:29Speaker 3: that we were like, either one of those guys will
- 1:25:31Speaker 3: happily take yeah, if they're available to us, And thankfully
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: j C was. And he's everything we thought he was
- 1:25:37Speaker 3: gonna be. And he's got a super high ceiling because
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: you just he's just got all these physical tools that
- 1:25:43Speaker 3: you he doesn't even really know how to use them
- 1:25:45Speaker 3: all yet, you know. But yeah, super talented, great kid,
- 1:25:50Speaker 3: all the things you could want in an offensive lineman.
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: Was there a fear for you him playing his whole
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: career on the right side, now moving him to left.
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: No, because you know, one, it's been done before, guys
- 1:26:01Speaker 3: have transitioned from left to left. He played left in
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: high school, so it's not like he's never been in
- 1:26:06Speaker 3: a left handed stance. Played four years to Alabama because
- 1:26:09Speaker 3: he had to with Evan Neil and then I think
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: it was Tyler Steen maybe, But so they had guys
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: that left, and then they had a five star recruit
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: come in and he'd already played a couple years over there,
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: and they were like, well, this is our chance to
- 1:26:20Speaker 3: get our best five guys. Well, you're comfortable they will
- 1:26:22Speaker 3: leave you there. But he's fully capable of playing left tackle.
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: I think he's probably comparable to like what Tyron Smith
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: was Tyrann came out as a right tackle, played right
- 1:26:31Speaker 3: tackle for a year in the league, and they moved
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: to left in that transition. Obviously that worked out great
- 1:26:35Speaker 3: for him and for them. You know, he just did
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: it with Jedrick Wilson in Cleveland. Cha had played on
- 1:26:42Speaker 3: the right in Alabama and played left and he got
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: to Cleveland for the last four years now. So not unprecedented,
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: and he's got the talent to do it, So that's awesome.
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: I'm glad to see her that he's a good dude,
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: because I worried those top notch SEC schools after doing
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: with Isaiah Wilson in twenty twenty. Sure, that was a
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: horrible experience for everybody involved in the Titans building.
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: From Afart seemed like that was not a lot of fun.
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: No, it was not.
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: But he does seem JP was with him.
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: JP's not in here. JP was with him at IMG
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: and he says he's an awesome guy.
- 1:27:10Speaker 3: He was, dude.
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: Yeah, an IMG two academy. The they have like leadership,
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: they have like mindset.
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: It's a sports factory.
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: Yeah. We always talked to Tyler Booker, who was at
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: Alabama with him, and the way he was talking about
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: mindset and meditation and all that. It was like eye
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: opening to see that this young cat has all these
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: tools already. Yeah, it's because IMG.
- 1:27:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean that he's and he was a number
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: one recruit. It's not like he's no more recruit in
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: the country. He goes to Alabama, it's like his he's
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: known nothing but success. Yeah, and sometimes there's there's something
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: to that. I think it was cool though. The other day,
- 1:27:45Speaker 3: after the first practice, he struggles with the sled and
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: he's kind of kind of made him mad, like he's
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: a little bit disappointed he couldn't do it the right
- 1:27:53Speaker 3: way right away. And so it's like five o'clock. They
- 1:27:56Speaker 3: had the rookie meunie camp in the morning. This was
- 1:27:58Speaker 3: on Friday. They appracticed in the morning. They're done at
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: like about five o'clock and sit in my office and
- 1:28:03Speaker 3: look outside and j C's out there like running one
- 1:28:06Speaker 3: hundred yard sprints and then he's like mosing down to
- 1:28:08Speaker 3: where the sled's at, and all of a sudden he
- 1:28:10Speaker 3: starts hitting, says by himself, and all of a sudden,
- 1:28:12Speaker 3: I walk next door. I'm like, rand should I stop him?
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: He's like, I let him go. For a minute and
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: just just let him do his thing. And but he's
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: out there in the afternoon mad that he didn't do
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: well enough and he's out there working again. I'm like,
- 1:28:25Speaker 3: that's that's when you're like, Okay, this is the right makeup,
- 1:28:27Speaker 3: Like this guy's.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: Yeah, that's as juicy. Yeah, as a head coach, you
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: got to look at that and be like, that's the
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: guy we just drafted. That's awesome, unbelievable feeling.
- 1:28:34Speaker 3: That's awesome. And but then there's also the flip side
- 1:28:36Speaker 3: of it, is like, dude, you're gonna get plenty of work.
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: You might just want to take the recovery when.
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: You get it. But what a good first impression.
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean it was that that goes a
- 1:28:44Speaker 3: long way, and and then it was every day after
- 1:28:46Speaker 3: that where he'd be out like you just it's like
- 1:28:48Speaker 3: part of his routine. And when you see a young player,
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: it's got some routine where it's like I need to
- 1:28:52Speaker 3: go do this, this and this in the afternoon because
- 1:28:54Speaker 3: that helps me get ready for the next whatever it is.
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: At least there's some thought process behind.
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: It, like yeah, man, that'll do.
- 1:29:00Speaker 3: You'll be able, you can be alright.
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: That's got a fire fire.
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: Titans fans so much looking for an assist with your

- 1:29:32Speaker 1: We have two massive Titan fans sitting on this bus
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: right now, Jack McPherson and Garrett Hargas. They've been Titans
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: fan since the beginning. Boys, do you have any questions
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: for coach CALLI?
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I do.
- 1:29:44Speaker 6: Jack McPherson, how's it going?
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: Jack?
- 1:29:47Speaker 6: Lifelong Titan fans, Super excited to have you here on
- 1:29:50Speaker 6: the bus and behind the range the Titans. My question,
- 1:29:53Speaker 6: with the significant upgrades we've gotten in the wide receiver
- 1:29:56Speaker 6: room recently, what is your plan regarding trailing birds with
- 1:30:01Speaker 6: him only having one TD in twenty two games. Yeah,
- 1:30:04Speaker 6: I know you've been asked this before in the media,
- 1:30:06Speaker 6: but would love to hear it first and from you.
- 1:30:08Speaker 3: Sure, I think that's a that's a that's a topic
- 1:30:10Speaker 3: of conversation these days. I'll tell you this, I only
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: know what I've seen of him. Obviously, I know that
- 1:30:18Speaker 3: what precedes him, just because I've watched it and I
- 1:30:20Speaker 3: understand it. But from what we see on a day
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: to day basis with Trade, he's been phenomenal. Like his
- 1:30:25Speaker 3: work ethic, the things that he's done, does everything we've asked.
- 1:30:29Speaker 3: He's got unbelievable physical talent, and it's almost it's a
- 1:30:33Speaker 3: personal challenge to me and to our staff is how
- 1:30:36Speaker 3: do we find the best role for Trade to come
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: help us? Like I think he can be a good player,
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: I do think guys get in these situations sometimes. For example,
- 1:30:46Speaker 3: you you know the trade AJ and they draft him.
- 1:30:48Speaker 3: There's just an intense amount of pressure on him to
- 1:30:52Speaker 3: be AJ and or to replace AJ. And I think
- 1:30:56Speaker 3: that that wears on guys sometimes when it doesn't go
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: well to start, and it's hard to be a really
- 1:31:01Speaker 3: good player at receiver as a rookie. I think it's hard.
- 1:31:03Speaker 3: I think it's a difficult task and so for him
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: there might have been a compounding factors of all that
- 1:31:09Speaker 3: pressure he felt, and then to be able to go
- 1:31:11Speaker 3: play fast and play aggressive and be free of that,
- 1:31:14Speaker 3: I think is hard. So what I'm hopeful for is
- 1:31:16Speaker 3: that the addition of these veteran players that we have
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: in here a new lease for him in terms of
- 1:31:23Speaker 3: all I know is what he's shown me, and I
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: don't make any judgments on what's happened before, and that
- 1:31:28Speaker 3: opportunity to reinvent yourself in a sense, I think is
- 1:31:32Speaker 3: going to be really good for him. And I've been
- 1:31:34Speaker 3: impressed with what he's done so far, and I think
- 1:31:36Speaker 3: he can play. But it's like a personal challenge for
- 1:31:38Speaker 3: me to find a place for him to have some
- 1:31:40Speaker 3: success because he's got talent and ability to do it.
- 1:31:43Speaker 6: That's awesome. My second part question as well, who what
- 1:31:48Speaker 6: credentials do I need or who do I need to
- 1:31:51Speaker 6: talk to to be able to be the twelfth Titan
- 1:31:54Speaker 6: and swing that sort of honor put in the middle.
- 1:31:57Speaker 3: You know, I've not experienced this yet, so you might
- 1:32:00Speaker 3: have to.
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: It's okay.
- 1:32:02Speaker 6: It's the first thing they do right before the coin toss,
- 1:32:06Speaker 6: and usually it's like an Eddie George or a Javon curse.
- 1:32:09Speaker 6: But what about Jack McPherson from Nashville, Tennessee swinging that sword?
- 1:32:14Speaker 6: Also one request again, you've never experienced this. We need
- 1:32:18Speaker 6: to bring back the OG paintrain video.
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: Yes, yes, this is okay. OG paintrain video does have
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: to come back.
- 1:32:27Speaker 6: I don't know what happened if it was a copyright issue,
- 1:32:29Speaker 6: but there was an original video they played before every
- 1:32:32Speaker 6: fourth quarter of every game, and it needs.
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: To come back.
- 1:32:36Speaker 6: I know if there's any Titans fans listening, they're turning
- 1:32:38Speaker 6: this up and going, come on, come on, Callahan.
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: All right, Kelly, they're calling him callying. Now, a couple
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: of things right here, Jack, While he's answering the credential
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: part of that question, can you pull up the pain
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: training I'd like to see this. Jack is a guy.
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: If you give him a reward at the end of
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: a tunnel, he will work endlessly. Rich Eisen has not
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: come on our show for almost three years now, I
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: think too. And he was told if he tweets at
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: rich eyes and every day until he comes on the show,
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: we will gift him a Chevy Silverado. We're at day
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: what three something?
- 1:33:09Speaker 6: Today was six ninety two?
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: Excuse me? See three years and yeah, I got mixed up.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: I got mixed up with this.
- 1:33:16Speaker 4: This is the O. G.
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: Paine train.
- 1:33:17Speaker 3: But yeah, oh that's Terry. Is this like Terry Taate?
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: Oh yeah, office Linebacker. I used to love those commercials.
- 1:33:22Speaker 6: You're gonna have to put on headphones. I believe you
- 1:33:25Speaker 6: want to hear.
- 1:33:26Speaker 3: That's what these are.
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: This is great because they throw a little Johnny Cash
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: in here. This is awesome.
- 1:33:31Speaker 3: Started over jack. When did they stop playing.
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: This two years ago? Years ago?
- 1:33:58Speaker 6: Yeah, there there's a version of it similar.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: But people are saying, ever since the one left the building,
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: they couldn't play that anymore.
- 1:34:05Speaker 6: I'm not saying it, but we bring the O G
- 1:34:07Speaker 6: video back? Titan super Bowl twenty.
- 1:34:10Speaker 3: Four, Well, I'll do some research on that, Okay. I
- 1:34:15Speaker 3: gotta figure out why I went away in the first place. Yeah,
- 1:34:17Speaker 3: there's nobody knows anymore because I played a Terry Tate
- 1:34:20Speaker 3: video one time for the guys. She's an How the
- 1:34:22Speaker 3: players looked at me.
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: Like what I forget? He can hear me?
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: Are you willing to cut your dick off for a
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: Tennessee Titan super Bowl? Got two kids, two beautiful children.
- 1:34:35Speaker 3: I don't know if I can I don't know if
- 1:34:37Speaker 3: I can commit to that part. I got young kids.
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: What are you willing to do for a Tennessee Titans
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: Super Bowl?
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: I'd be willing to do quite a bit. Would you
- 1:34:49Speaker 3: take off a limb like a finger, let's say whole hand,
- 1:34:53Speaker 3: like Ronnie Lott style.
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: Let's say whole hand.
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: Would you go whole hand? Yeah, your dominant hand.
- 1:34:59Speaker 3: My dominant and for Super Bowl? Yeah, for the Tennessee
- 1:35:02Speaker 3: Titans as the head coach. That would be pretty that
- 1:35:04Speaker 3: would be pretty sweet.
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: Old man gets one. Yeah. Jack McPherson gets one.
- 1:35:09Speaker 3: That's the most important, most important.
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: Garrett Hargas gets one. Sorry you didn't speak. I was
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: wrapped up.
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: Would you take off that dominant hand?
- 1:35:20Speaker 3: That hm hmm. That would be tough. That would be
- 1:35:24Speaker 3: tough to That would be tough to offer up. But
- 1:35:27Speaker 3: in fairness to the commitment, I could, I could be
- 1:35:32Speaker 3: If that's what it meant, I would. I would give
- 1:35:34Speaker 3: it some consideration that.
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: This is a answer no question. Are you willing to
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: now that we've narrowed it down to a dominant hand,
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: would you cut off your right hand for a Tennessee
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: Titans Super Bowl?
- 1:35:44Speaker 3: I cannot cut off my right hand. Because now here's
- 1:35:49Speaker 3: the problem. Here's the problem. I get into that same
- 1:35:52Speaker 3: situation again and someone says, I heard you would cut
- 1:35:56Speaker 3: your hand off. Yeah, you'd have to have some incredible
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: commitment to the process.
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: How about this.
- 1:36:04Speaker 3: Yeah, but then you finally do it, and then you
- 1:36:05Speaker 3: could bag then you could well afterwards, then you can
- 1:36:08Speaker 3: back at the commitment. What's the fun in that?
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: Right? Two options? I'm gonna give you two options. There's
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: a classic locker room where a gun to your head
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: you have to choose one. Yeah, would you rather for
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: a Titan super Bowl, lose one testicle or get a
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: busting with the boys? Tramp Stamp Championship twenty twenty four,
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: tramp stamp on your low back.
- 1:36:32Speaker 3: Oh, I'll do I'll do the tramp stamp. Yeah, I
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: could do that.
- 1:36:35Speaker 6: We got.
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: I did a tattoo for it.
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: Took us a couple of ways.
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: From he said, a little too easy. Tramp stamp.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, no problem, he's actually a tattoo one.
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: Yeah, you can do it over the one I already get.
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: Yeah, Garrett, I did not give you opportunity to time out,
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: time out, time out.
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: He never got a chance to answer the uh to
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: say if he's going to bring back pain train or
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: Jack an opportunity to maybe one day swing this.
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: Yeah, he told me. He told me to a swush.
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: I was like, we're getting right into it right now.
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: That is that's my fault.
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: I'm realizing that I gotta do the research on the video. Yeah,
- 1:37:08Speaker 3: we pain details on that because I don't know what.
- 1:37:10Speaker 3: I've never even heard of it. I didn't know, So
- 1:37:12Speaker 3: let's let me it plays in the fourth quarter, right, Yeah?
- 1:37:15Speaker 3: Oh is that what it was? The fourth quarter? Like
- 1:37:17Speaker 3: like renegade style in Pittsburgh Like that's yeah, yes, that's
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: to kick.
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: Off that fourth quarter.
- 1:37:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I hear that train.
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: You know the fans want to maybe you ask questions.
- 1:37:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I can do I can. I can at least
- 1:37:29Speaker 3: give you that.
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: I'll look into it, that's all I'm asking.
- 1:37:31Speaker 3: Yeah, the shorge, the swords new for me too. I
- 1:37:35Speaker 3: gotta figure out what and maybe.
- 1:37:37Speaker 6: The sword just so it's a little bit more enticing
- 1:37:40Speaker 6: for y'all's demographic. Maybe we bring Will and Taylor x
- 1:37:44Speaker 6: Titans out there too, then they can help and we
- 1:37:47Speaker 6: can all as a team slam that sword in the ground.
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: We just both get on the knee and handed to Jack,
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: no doubt.
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that's exactly Jack, and hold it together and put
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: the round boys, twelfth Man and just King Arthur.
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I like that.
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: Yeah, did you have anything? Yeah, I got a question.
- 1:38:05Speaker 5: So, with the addition to the weapons on offense and
- 1:38:10Speaker 5: a unfortunate Titans fan base that can be fair weathered,
- 1:38:13Speaker 5: what can the fan base look forward to this coming season?
- 1:38:18Speaker 3: Well, I think that we're gonna have a I think
- 1:38:20Speaker 3: we have a team of guys that are that are
- 1:38:22Speaker 3: hungry to prove I know not I know the perception
- 1:38:25Speaker 3: of us outside of of our building is not high.
- 1:38:31Speaker 3: I think we have a lot of people that don't
- 1:38:34Speaker 3: think that we're gonna be much and I think that's
- 1:38:38Speaker 3: where we want to be right now, and then we
- 1:38:39Speaker 3: have a chance to to prove a lot of people,
- 1:38:42Speaker 3: a lot of opinions wrong. I think we're made I
- 1:38:44Speaker 3: think we have a team that's made up to do it.
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: You're gonna have it. They're gonna play hard as hell,
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: there's gonna be I think we're gonna have fun playing together.
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: I think you're gonna see the energy and the connection
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: amongst the team, and at the end of the day,
- 1:38:57Speaker 3: the guys that we brought in he pairing with the
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: guys in the locker room is we got some guys
- 1:39:00Speaker 3: that play football a particular way. And that's as as
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: Dinard Wilson, our defensive courtinator, says, we've got some dogs
- 1:39:07Speaker 3: and he says d A W G. And that stands
- 1:39:11Speaker 3: for disciplined assholes with grit, And I like that. But
- 1:39:15Speaker 3: I think that's the image that especially on defense too,
- 1:39:17Speaker 3: with with Lagerious and cheetoh ating them at corner. You
- 1:39:22Speaker 3: have big sweat and there in the middle and Sebastian
- 1:39:24Speaker 3: Joseph Day and your pair them with Jefferin. I think
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: there's some really cool things happening on defense that I'm
- 1:39:29Speaker 3: really excited about. And so again I can't make predictions
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: and promises and proclamations, but as far as the people
- 1:39:37Speaker 3: and what the team looks like, I think you're gonna
- 1:39:39Speaker 3: it's gonna be a product that people are gonna be
- 1:39:40Speaker 3: excited to come.
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: Watch, show up to the games.
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: People. I said, look, I said I said it in
- 1:39:47Speaker 3: my opening press conference. I said it like we need
- 1:39:50Speaker 3: the city of Nashville and Titans fans like we need them.
- 1:39:53Speaker 3: We need the stadium to be a place that people
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: come to and are like, oh man, I don't want
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: to go play in Nashville. This like, that's what looking for.
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: We need that environment. So all the fants Titans fans
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: out there listening to come on, come on, man, we
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: need everybody on board, and hopefully you get in early
- 1:40:09Speaker 3: enough and you don't get accused of jumping on the
- 1:40:11Speaker 3: bandwagon when when things go right.
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: That's a good well, yeah, that's a good question.
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: All core of a Titans fan base out there for sure.
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: Every Yeah, every franchise has their five percent, like that
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: five percent crazy fan base, and the Titans five percent
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: is strong. That's great. I love that. It's they're crazy
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: people in the best way possible.
- 1:40:30Speaker 3: That's what you need. That's that's what makes the NFL
- 1:40:32Speaker 3: the NFL.
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: Matt neely Man, Yeah, he was the one.
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: Yeah, dude, thank you for coming on.
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: This is awesome.
- 1:40:41Speaker 3: This is fun and an hour forty with the head
- 1:40:43Speaker 3: ball coach. I love it.
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: Bill listens.
- 1:40:47Speaker 3: I can't promise you that I'll listen, but I hope
- 1:40:48Speaker 3: he does. Just know that we might have to say hey, will.
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: Say you hope he listens to that.
- 1:40:52Speaker 3: I think we can probably make that.
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: Yeah, we do appreciate you coming on.
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: We will be flying the Titans flag all season long.
