- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to a DM podcast.
- 0:03Speaker 2: We'll try to keep it as nice as we can,
- 0:04Speaker 2: but you might hear the occasional swear word in No Dribble.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Don't tell Mom Hello and welcome to No Dribble, the
- 0:23Speaker 2: podcast where we talk about netball, but we talk about
- 0:25Speaker 2: so much more. It is a glorious winter day. I'm
- 0:28Speaker 2: Carolyn Swindle. I'm here in Sydney, bright nearly and see
- 0:32Speaker 2: you next to me, looking resplendent in pink.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Oh, thank you, Catherine Cox. It is chills though, isn't
- 0:37Speaker 1: it chilly on the Willie this morning?
- 0:40Speaker 2: And that must be nice up north.
- 0:42Speaker 3: So it's a little bit cold, lizell Us here from
- 0:45Speaker 3: the northern Rivers of New South Wales, a little bit cold,
- 0:47Speaker 3: but long weekend and it has and I say this
- 0:51Speaker 3: very carefully because I know there are lots of parts
- 0:53Speaker 3: of Australia that are in drought. But we have had
- 0:55Speaker 3: nothing but rain for the last six weeks. So we
- 0:57Speaker 3: had a weekend of no rain, and so we had
- 1:01Speaker 3: a bonfire on Saturday night, which was great at a
- 1:04Speaker 3: friend's place. But do you remember back in the day,
- 1:07Speaker 3: the June Long weekend was bonfire night, wasn't it and
- 1:09Speaker 3: you had firecrackers.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Yes, I grew up in Queensland where everything was illegal. No,
- 1:16Speaker 2: you never had it?
- 1:17Speaker 1: Was it called I've got Skyhawk Day in my head,
- 1:19Speaker 1: Guy Fawk's Day or something.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Sky Hawks, sky hooks, yeah.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Sky hawks.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Yeah, Guy Fawkes tried to blow up British Parliament in
- 1:36Speaker 2: like for fourteen hundreds or something.
- 1:39Speaker 3: But that's I Do you remember that, Coxy though, Carolyn,
- 1:41Speaker 3: this you will just remember nothing obviously, but living in Queensland.
- 1:44Speaker 3: But do you remember when you were a kid and
- 1:46Speaker 3: like my dad used to get bags of firecrackers from
- 1:49Speaker 3: someone at work and he'd come home from work like
- 1:51Speaker 3: the week before, and he'd have all the firecrackers, like
- 1:54Speaker 3: you'd have it like in your bag, and then I'd
- 1:56Speaker 3: take the bag. There's no way you'd let your kids
- 1:59Speaker 3: do this now. I would used to take my bag
- 2:01Speaker 3: into my room and sort through it all. Yeah gunpat yeah,
- 2:06Speaker 3: explosives in their room and I would sort through everything
- 2:09Speaker 3: and then i'd like have a little stash and keep
- 2:11Speaker 3: it in the suitcase. Fig use later in the year
- 2:13Speaker 3: when it was really unstable.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Oh my god. Oh it was the best though, wasn't it?
- 2:17Speaker 1: And touch would we were because we did it every
- 2:20Speaker 1: single year without fail. We were never involved or with
- 2:24Speaker 1: the group of people, were never involved in any incidents.
- 2:27Speaker 1: But obviously there was a stack of them because you
- 2:29Speaker 1: had to go right up to them like them, and
- 2:32Speaker 1: then you know.
- 2:33Speaker 2: You seem to have all ten fingers and well yeah.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, but it was the best. Wasn't that so fun?
- 2:38Speaker 3: Yeah? I've got a scar on my foot from an incident.
- 2:41Speaker 1: What happened?
- 2:43Speaker 3: Oh, just what happened? Well, I was ten and stupid
- 2:47Speaker 3: and I lit one and held it and then when
- 2:49Speaker 3: it got hot in my fingers, I dropped it and.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Fue. No, I wonder it was banns.
- 2:58Speaker 2: We had to do in Brisbane was find some vacant land,
- 3:02Speaker 2: start a fire and throw aerosol cans in it. That's
- 3:05Speaker 2: what we had to do for fun, which was highly illegal,
- 3:08Speaker 2: obviously and very poorly advice. So you just had to
- 3:12Speaker 2: go tell you you know, you could just say to
- 3:13Speaker 2: your parents, so we're off, see you later, yeah, and yeah,
- 3:16Speaker 2: go off and do all this stuff. Now I can
- 3:19Speaker 2: track my son wherever he is. He was in Cannable
- 3:22Speaker 2: on the weekends, nearly seven hours drive away, and it's
- 3:25Speaker 2: like I could see where he was from his phone
- 3:27Speaker 2: the whole time.
- 3:29Speaker 1: No idea, the old stalking in Life three sixty or
- 3:32Speaker 1: whatever it is. I love it, Liza. I do remember, though,
- 3:34Speaker 1: when I finally got to the Institute Isustralian Institute of
- 3:37Speaker 1: Sporting Camera that all the talk was around if you
- 3:40Speaker 1: wanted fireworks you could go to Fishwick. I think fish
- 3:43Speaker 1: Wik was the place.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Sometimes you needed them together. That was only one weekend
- 3:55Speaker 3: the year, I promised. But that's right. And the thing
- 3:58Speaker 3: is though, like you need if you have fireworks, you've
- 4:00Speaker 3: got to have a bit of space to let them off.
- 4:02Speaker 3: But now we live on a farm, I'm like, fireworks
- 4:04Speaker 3: are the devil that would send our cows nuts. People's
- 4:08Speaker 3: dogs used to go insaye, I get it, Like my
- 4:10Speaker 3: dog would be so scared if they were fireworks. Like
- 4:12Speaker 3: when you think back to the seventies and eighties, you're like,
- 4:14Speaker 3: oh my god, everything was so unregulated.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Yeah and simple, yeah, yeah and dangerous. But yes, no
- 4:19Speaker 1: one had a clue at the time, did they. Yeah. Hey,
- 4:22Speaker 1: now listen, because of the barrage.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Of abuse that I've copped from you, performance feedback is
- 4:29Speaker 2: what you have. I have lovely okay to us, Okay.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Thank you?
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you belated you didn't make those.
- 4:39Speaker 1: No, But I tell you, the happiest person in the
- 4:41Speaker 1: room about this is me, because Lizzellasis will shock you
- 4:45Speaker 1: more than anyone. I forgot to eat this morning. Wow
- 4:49Speaker 1: what I know never in my life. I don't know
- 4:52Speaker 1: how it happened, but I bought these and I had
- 4:54Speaker 1: them next to me in the car. I was like,
- 4:55Speaker 1: oh god, they look really good. I might crack one
- 4:57Speaker 1: in a minute. Then I thought, it's because I haven't eaten.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I think I'm slowly losing my mind.
- 5:03Speaker 3: You are, because you know, we used to have conversations
- 5:05Speaker 3: where we laughed at people who said they've forgotten to eat.
- 5:07Speaker 3: I forgot that I don't have time to eat. We're like,
- 5:09Speaker 3: oh my god, who doesn't have time to eat? Well,
- 5:11Speaker 3: now it's twenty four.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Or the girls who order a salad at the pub.
- 5:13Speaker 1: It's like, come on, I know, really, yeah, a salad,
- 5:16Speaker 1: but then a bottle of wine on the side. I mean,
- 5:19Speaker 1: it's a balance, died, isn't it. Yeah? I mean I
- 5:21Speaker 1: think about breakfast when I got to bed.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Actually it was when I was I was going to
- 5:25Speaker 2: a meeting at mcquarie Banks Sports about it wasn't It
- 5:30Speaker 2: wasn't about the because I didn't have the kids at
- 5:32Speaker 2: that start and have my son at that stage. But
- 5:33Speaker 2: it was about something to do with your foundation, Liz.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I think when Lewis was about eighteen months old and
- 5:40Speaker 2: it was just one of those chaotic mornings and I
- 5:41Speaker 2: had to drive into town. He's in the back seat.
- 5:43Speaker 2: It's like he hasn't eaten. Pulled into a cafe and
- 5:45Speaker 2: it went, yep, sure mate, it's a cupcake for breakfast today.
- 5:50Speaker 2: This is the life of a working mother. Hey. It's like, look,
- 5:53Speaker 2: sometimes sometimes you'll have a cupcake for breakfast and you'll
- 5:56Speaker 2: be okay.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I hope that's the case, because I'm about to
- 5:59Speaker 1: take a bite. You guys just talk among as.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Long as over the course of the week, they sort
- 6:04Speaker 3: of get exactly questable. It doesn't matter if it's a cupcake.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Every now and then it was every morning that would
- 6:09Speaker 3: be an issue, but every now.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Well it does it does? They do tend to get
- 6:12Speaker 2: excited though, it's like, oh, great, are we got to
- 6:13Speaker 2: do this every day. We live not far from a
- 6:16Speaker 2: primary school, and when he was about three, he went
- 6:18Speaker 2: up to a fate and had a great day and
- 6:21Speaker 2: then the next day wake up and said, can we
- 6:23Speaker 2: go back to that thing? It's like, oh, mate, that's
- 6:25Speaker 2: just that was like brigadoon, that thing that's once a year,
- 6:28Speaker 2: doesn't that's he could didn't believe. We had to take
- 6:30Speaker 2: him up and show him that the school was now empty.
- 6:33Speaker 2: It's just a normal school. The school fate is over,
- 6:35Speaker 2: the rides are gone.
- 6:36Speaker 1: How good were school fades with the toffees? They are
- 6:40Speaker 1: one hundred?
- 6:42Speaker 2: Yeah? Did you have to be involved in planning one
- 6:45Speaker 2: at all? Quite?
- 6:46Speaker 1: Only on in.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Lewis's primary school era, I was on committees and things.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Oh a nightmare of organization these things. So thanks to
- 6:55Speaker 2: everyone who does that.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm just reflecting on how motherhood is changed. So you,
- 7:02Speaker 3: when Lewis was little, what fifteen years ago, you were
- 7:05Speaker 3: beating yourself up because you gave him a cupcake for breakfast.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Back in the seventies, no one beat themselves up for
- 7:10Speaker 3: a lamb and their children to sit in their bedrooms
- 7:12Speaker 3: with a bag of explosives.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Or the parents smoking in the car with the windows yes,
- 7:21Speaker 1: and the kids just in the back seat and hailing
- 7:23Speaker 1: at all no seat belts. They were probably driving home drunk.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Half the time from partisan barb bread. Yeah, I made
- 7:30Speaker 1: the list go all the.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Things, and here we are exactly caswine still having a
- 7:34Speaker 2: cupcake for breakfast.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Correct, and it was delicious and just had a bit.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Thanks you.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Inhaled that they didn't even touch the station.
- 7:39Speaker 2: She's only had half of it to be here, but
- 7:41Speaker 2: I did inhal it.
- 7:42Speaker 1: You're right.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Yeah, So it was a great long weekend and I
- 7:47Speaker 2: had fire too. We had cocktails by the fire last night.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I saw that, No, I do have a fire on
- 7:54Speaker 1: my television show. Yeah, yea, it's so good that I
- 7:57Speaker 1: put that on sometimes. It's amazing how much warm you
- 7:59Speaker 1: feel was watching it.
- 8:00Speaker 2: It's interesting, isn't it.
- 8:02Speaker 1: I'm a big glass of red, But no, I didn't
- 8:04Speaker 1: have it. What were you drinking in your photo?
- 8:06Speaker 2: That was the cocktail. It's called a boulevardier. It's like
- 8:08Speaker 2: a Negroni, but instead of gin, it's made out of bourbon.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Delicious.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Yeah, very nice, get around it. Folks, highly recommend it,
- 8:16Speaker 2: But yes, I did. I spent quite a lot of
- 8:18Speaker 2: I had to extract myself from the TV yesterday to
- 8:21Speaker 2: go and sit in front of the fire for a
- 8:23Speaker 2: while because quite a lot of interesting netball happened on
- 8:26Speaker 2: the weekend a lot.
- 8:28Speaker 1: A couple of well, I don't know if the fever
- 8:31Speaker 1: Swifts was considered an upset. I actually checked double check
- 8:35Speaker 1: the extra time rules before that one, because I thought
- 8:38Speaker 1: that's where we might be headed.
- 8:40Speaker 2: But no, no, it's nowhere near. They could have probably
- 8:43Speaker 2: wrapped it up fifteen minutes early. In fact, with the
- 8:45Speaker 2: same result. There's some very interesting I imagine that there's
- 8:49Speaker 2: some big conversation has already been happening in the Swifts
- 8:54Speaker 2: over the last couple of days, because it's like, Okay,
- 8:56Speaker 2: well things are good, but this is a this is
- 8:59Speaker 2: a good, good shake up for us.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it was so needed. I reckon. We've said this
- 9:03Speaker 1: a few times, but even Helen Howsby at the end
- 9:05Speaker 1: of the game when she was interviewed, said having a
- 9:08Speaker 1: win is great, and they've been doing that obviously consistently.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Having a loss is a great reminder of what needs
- 9:14Speaker 1: to be done, and they weren't disappointed about that, and
- 9:17Speaker 1: they'd go back and have a good look over things
- 9:19Speaker 1: and all the rest of it. So the fact that
- 9:20Speaker 1: they lost three quarters is probably an area they need
- 9:25Speaker 1: to look at. Only three games as well, so they
- 9:28Speaker 1: just weren't winning ball back. Aside from that, it was
- 9:30Speaker 1: so clinical. There was only twelve mistakes made from the
- 9:34Speaker 1: swifts and ten turnovers from the West Coast fever. That
- 9:38Speaker 1: is super low, even though it did get patchy at times.
- 9:42Speaker 1: That's super low in terms of turnovers.
- 9:45Speaker 2: I'd like to say, that's.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Like Grand Final stats, isn't it like you would expect
- 9:49Speaker 3: those stats from the two best teams in the league. Yeah,
- 9:52Speaker 3: and lots of people pointing to the fact that this
- 9:54Speaker 3: could have been a bit of a prelude to the
- 9:57Speaker 3: Grand Finals. So yeah, that's super impressive from both teams.
- 10:02Speaker 1: How crazy to think though, that that's the second bite
- 10:04Speaker 1: of the cherry on each other. Now it is the finals.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Next time they meet will be the finals, not where's
- 10:09Speaker 1: the season.
- 10:10Speaker 2: God, I'm going to say something controversial, and as we know,
- 10:14Speaker 2: I've a very little time in a goal circle. I'm
- 10:16Speaker 2: a bit bored with the holding shooter. I like to
- 10:20Speaker 2: I really enjoyed watching Lightning a little bit more movement
- 10:23Speaker 2: in the goal circle there and things. It's just a
- 10:26Speaker 2: little bit.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I don't think that's controversial at all. I think most
- 10:29Speaker 1: people would agree with you. Yeah, there was plenty of
- 10:32Speaker 1: chat after that game around that stuff.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Yeah, but here's a question for you. What would you
- 10:37Speaker 3: do about.
- 10:37Speaker 2: It on a podcast?
- 10:44Speaker 3: Like you're not going to be able to say to teams, sorry,
- 10:48Speaker 3: you can't you can't recruit anyone over sixteen two. Yeah,
- 10:51Speaker 3: that's all there is to it. So like, then do
- 10:53Speaker 3: you look at changing the rules? So what do you do?
- 10:55Speaker 3: Do you say? Well, in that I don't know, do
- 10:59Speaker 3: you say that the shooter can't stand in the circle
- 11:01Speaker 3: for longer than five seconds at a time, which sounds.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Basketball?
- 11:07Speaker 3: Yeah, but what do you do about it other than
- 11:10Speaker 3: prove that the moving circle is more effective? And I'm
- 11:14Speaker 3: with you. I love watching like Vixen's and Lightning and
- 11:17Speaker 3: just the speed of that ball movement. But until until
- 11:22Speaker 3: they're winning, then, you know, I don't know what you can. Like,
- 11:27Speaker 3: I genuinely do wonder about this, Like I hear people,
- 11:30Speaker 3: you know, I hear that complaint that it's boring. What
- 11:32Speaker 3: do you do?
- 11:33Speaker 1: Well? The super shot was meant sorry, I got cupcaking.
- 11:39Speaker 3: What do you do? You keep calm and eat cupcuts?
- 11:41Speaker 3: That's exactly what.
- 11:42Speaker 1: But that was the whole point for the super shop
- 11:44Speaker 1: being introduced, wasn't it?
- 11:46Speaker 3: Because it was and we do we see a lot
- 11:47Speaker 3: more long range shooting now.
- 11:49Speaker 1: But it doesn't hasn't stopped the tall shooter.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I can't imagine that you would get Georgie Horge's shooting
- 11:56Speaker 2: if there wasn't a super shot, would you, Because it's
- 11:59Speaker 2: like she would just it would be so easy to
- 12:01Speaker 2: shut her down, or easier to shut her down closer
- 12:03Speaker 2: to the post, whereas when she's back at there. So
- 12:06Speaker 2: it is. I think it is useful in that regard.
- 12:09Speaker 2: I reckon, that's a team that'll be having even more
- 12:11Speaker 2: serious conversations and the Swifts this weekend.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Well, funny you mentioned that because they shot two from
- 12:16Speaker 1: sixteen super shots, that's it. Georgie sunk both of them. Yeh,
- 12:22Speaker 1: Georgie Horgeous. The one that's not meant to be playing
- 12:24Speaker 1: in the circle was the one that sunk the two. Interesting,
- 12:27Speaker 1: how bad's that the Thunderbirds had twenty two more attempts
- 12:31Speaker 1: and only lost by three. It was across the board
- 12:35Speaker 1: stats were all almost exactly the same. The shooting percentage
- 12:39Speaker 1: is where they lost the game.
- 12:40Speaker 2: And this is not Shamira's Stirling Humphreys being on maternity leaf.
- 12:44Speaker 2: You know she was nowhere near that end of the circle,
- 12:46Speaker 2: not the end of the court.
- 12:47Speaker 1: No, because they still got a ton of ball back.
- 12:49Speaker 1: They still had like fourteen games, sixteen deflections and only
- 12:52Speaker 1: eleven turnovers, and they were incredible everywhere else apart from
- 12:55Speaker 1: the shot. I don't think I've seen the game as
- 12:58Speaker 1: clear cart as that, as to where a team's lost
- 13:01Speaker 1: it before as that one.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm too scared to sort of point to the shooters,
- 13:05Speaker 3: because you know, my best friend's a girl shooter, and
- 13:07Speaker 3: she'd always say to me, it's not just the shooters
- 13:09Speaker 3: who lose it. So any of my best friends say,
- 13:12Speaker 3: it's really clear cut, it must be really clear cut.
- 13:14Speaker 3: But Ramalda had ten rebounds, right, so they had twenty
- 13:17Speaker 3: two more shots, but they got the ball back what
- 13:21Speaker 3: ten times? Yeah, so that's probably what might make twelve
- 13:23Speaker 3: more shots. Yeah.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Yeah, and they lost by three by three. Yeah, the
- 13:27Speaker 1: percentage was seventy four versus ninety five. Well, yeah, the
- 13:32Speaker 1: Giants were fantastic. They completely deserved to win that game.
- 13:36Speaker 1: It's funny, isn't it how there's just sometimes there's one
- 13:38Speaker 1: team that's your bogey team? Yeah? Hows was the Thunderbirds
- 13:42Speaker 1: in the early days. Wasn't at least we struggled to
- 13:44Speaker 1: beat them.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Early days, middle days, later days used to be that true.
- 13:49Speaker 3: We had like seventeen losses in a row to them
- 13:52Speaker 3: from the start of what would we play then coming
- 13:55Speaker 3: off bank trophy.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Yep, back in the day, seventeen losses in.
- 13:59Speaker 3: A row, Oh my god. Yeah, and you might play
- 14:02Speaker 3: them twice or three times a year with finals like
- 14:04Speaker 3: it took us years to beat them. And I remember
- 14:07Speaker 3: the first time we beat them. I was driving out
- 14:09Speaker 3: to Olympic Park and I'd finished work and I was
- 14:14Speaker 3: running late, and there was traffic, and I just had
- 14:17Speaker 3: so much adrenaline. I remember pulling into the car part
- 14:20Speaker 3: with my heart was racing, steam was coming out of
- 14:22Speaker 3: my ears, and because I didn't have time to think
- 14:23Speaker 3: about it, we just went out there and played and
- 14:26Speaker 3: it was just amazing. Just that first win was such
- 14:29Speaker 3: a watershed and we barely lost to them. We didn't
- 14:33Speaker 3: lose them a lot after that, like a few more times.
- 14:35Speaker 1: But that's the whole mental thing, isn't it though, Like
- 14:37Speaker 1: you get over and you're like, oh, we can beat them.
- 14:39Speaker 1: So I wonder with this Giant's you know, thunderbirds thing.
- 14:42Speaker 1: The Giants had only had one win before and it
- 14:44Speaker 1: was against the Thunderbed. So did they go into that
- 14:46Speaker 1: game going, oh, we've done it before, we can totally
- 14:49Speaker 1: do this. Yeah, it's fascinating, isn't it.
- 14:51Speaker 2: So when you are so seventeen games that you haven't
- 14:54Speaker 2: beaten this one team, so at game twelve, thirteen, fourteen
- 14:58Speaker 2: that you've got, how do you keep I went on.
- 15:00Speaker 1: The pisce the night before those ones.
- 15:04Speaker 2: But like, how do you how do you keep the
- 15:07Speaker 2: faith that it's like this is because it must just
- 15:10Speaker 2: hang over you. It's like, oh my god, we can't
- 15:12Speaker 2: make it fifteen in a row. Now it'say, oh my god,
- 15:14Speaker 2: we can't make it sixteen in a row. But you
- 15:16Speaker 2: have to put that out of your head and play
- 15:18Speaker 2: the game that you're playing, don't you. It's like you
- 15:21Speaker 2: can't play those other sixteen games.
- 15:22Speaker 1: You don't have a time machine.
- 15:24Speaker 3: And we used to talk about the fact that we
- 15:27Speaker 3: started off seven players on court scores were even, and
- 15:30Speaker 3: he just said, yeah, but you sort of know, like
- 15:32Speaker 3: I got to the point and I thought it might
- 15:35Speaker 3: not have been seventeen, it might have been fifteen. It
- 15:36Speaker 3: was a lot, right, but it was I just started
- 15:39Speaker 3: to think, with every lost wrings is closer to the wine, right,
- 15:43Speaker 3: So eventually we had to win one.
- 15:45Speaker 1: And you just learned a little thing extra every time,
- 15:49Speaker 1: don't you.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Yeah, and every time you sort of go and it
- 15:52Speaker 3: was mental like it was Thunderbeer's back then played a
- 15:55Speaker 3: really physical style of defense. It was Sarah Sutta and
- 15:59Speaker 3: kath Harvey and I think Vicky Neil might have been
- 16:03Speaker 3: their wing defense and it was their trademark and they
- 16:05Speaker 3: were so good at it, and we just had to
- 16:07Speaker 3: harden up. We just had to deal, right, You can't
- 16:10Speaker 3: just winge about it. You've actually got to do something
- 16:11Speaker 3: and deal. So we tried a few things.
- 16:15Speaker 1: We had umpires come in because I remember Harbs was
- 16:18Speaker 1: quite I want to say dirty, let's say it, because
- 16:23Speaker 1: she was. She was probably one of the first players
- 16:25Speaker 1: to pull dresses down, you know, push shoulders down to
- 16:28Speaker 1: get herself up in the air and stuff like that.
- 16:31Speaker 1: And it's so clever, right did it?
- 16:32Speaker 3: So no one saw like super clever And that wasn't
- 16:36Speaker 3: the only part of her game. She would also fly
- 16:38Speaker 3: for these beautiful intercepts. So yeah, just an amazing defensive unit.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Correct, But we also it was so frustrating in that well,
- 16:46Speaker 1: like they're clearly being dirty, why not on all occasions?
- 16:51Speaker 1: Just to say that first, But how do we then
- 16:54Speaker 1: show the umpires that's happening. And we had the umpires
- 16:56Speaker 1: come in and talk to us and they were like, look,
- 16:58Speaker 1: we can't pull it unless we see it, so you know,
- 17:00Speaker 1: if you guys can position yourselves in different And that
- 17:03Speaker 1: was the first time I thought, my god, that's so true.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Why has it not ever occurred to me the umpires
- 17:08Speaker 1: although they probably know what's happening, they have to see it. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 17:12Speaker 1: never occurred to me. I was It's like, what's obvious
- 17:14Speaker 1: that's happening, And it was obvious, but unless you see it,
- 17:16Speaker 1: you can't just make calls. Fascinating.
- 17:19Speaker 3: It's interesting, isn't it. But you know that we got
- 17:21Speaker 3: that first win and then we went to Adelaide and
- 17:25Speaker 3: we went into overtime in the semi. We were down
- 17:28Speaker 3: by seven in the last quarter and then we caught
- 17:31Speaker 3: it back when it overtime, won the semi, then won
- 17:34Speaker 3: the Grand Final, won the right to have the Grand Final,
- 17:36Speaker 3: and sitty and then we won the Grand Final. Like
- 17:38Speaker 3: it was just it was like this watershed moment, the
- 17:40Speaker 3: moment we got it was oh, that's what we do.
- 17:43Speaker 3: It was amazing, right, and so it's fascinating then to
- 17:45Speaker 3: see like these things still playing out and Julie Fitzgerald
- 17:49Speaker 3: was our coach right now, she's still She's got this
- 17:51Speaker 3: history that sits on the other side now with the Thunderbirds.
- 17:54Speaker 3: As the coach of the Giants.
- 17:57Speaker 2: I might get it, just might talk to my under twelves.
- 17:59Speaker 2: I've had to resort to saying when we win, I
- 18:01Speaker 2: will buy you war mcflurries at the following training. Really, yeah,
- 18:06Speaker 2: that sounds good. Yeah, So what how are the Giants
- 18:11Speaker 2: feeling now? Are they like, are they thinking, all right,
- 18:15Speaker 2: this is the you know, this is we've beaten seventeen
- 18:18Speaker 2: times in a row by the Thunderbirds, We've beaten them.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Now we're going to win everything. Are they now thinking
- 18:22Speaker 2: this is our win, We've done it. Where things are
- 18:25Speaker 2: the rest of our season is looking up? But where
- 18:27Speaker 2: are they?
- 18:28Speaker 1: Do you think? Oh, they'll be very positive by that,
- 18:30Speaker 1: And particularly with Casey Corpoy, that was only a second
- 18:33Speaker 1: game and she got a couple of big moments right
- 18:35Speaker 1: at the end too. She got the rebound that was
- 18:38Speaker 1: you know, maybe I've got the Thunderbirds another shot and
- 18:40Speaker 1: potentially taken the win. But those sort of things like
- 18:43Speaker 1: I think the week before she's just trying to fill
- 18:45Speaker 1: it out and work out where she is and the
- 18:46Speaker 1: scheme of things and the contest and how hard it is.
- 18:50Speaker 1: And she was good this game, she was better. I
- 18:53Speaker 1: think she's brought a lot of confidence to that side
- 18:55Speaker 1: that was probably down in a bit of a hole
- 18:57Speaker 1: after losing Jody Anne Wards. So I reckon there's a
- 19:00Speaker 1: few more wins in there. For sure. They're run homes,
- 19:02Speaker 1: not great, but.
- 19:04Speaker 2: At home against the Swift's next, I think.
- 19:07Speaker 1: They've got yeah, and then the Swifts yeah. So I
- 19:11Speaker 1: mean it's not easy, but no week is easy. But
- 19:13Speaker 1: I think they'll be feeling a lot better than they
- 19:15Speaker 1: were before that, for sure.
- 19:16Speaker 2: I just loved seeing Aeron O'Brien and Aaron was a
- 19:19Speaker 2: training partner for the Giants last year, I think, and
- 19:21Speaker 2: this year like this is her year. It's like this
- 19:23Speaker 2: is you know, Sharne Lambdon had so many years waiting
- 19:26Speaker 2: for her moment. Now she's having her moment. Aaron O'Brien.
- 19:29Speaker 2: It's like, I just I love it. I love it
- 19:31Speaker 2: so much and it's just so great to see her
- 19:33Speaker 2: as player. Of the match. For what it's worth, that
- 19:36Speaker 2: would have been my player of the match too, making
- 19:38Speaker 2: it Aeron O'Brien. But yeah, it's yeah, fabulous, good good work.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Was nice that we met her mum at our function last.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Year, Yeah, that's right. Yeah. And second week she's playing
- 19:47Speaker 1: out of a position she was out at gold Defence. So
- 19:49Speaker 1: unreal to see the ladder though, so interesting now because
- 19:53Speaker 1: it was getting pretty chokers. Now it is literally spread
- 19:56Speaker 1: out by a win, so Swift's thirty two down Fever
- 20:00Speaker 1: down to Lightning, Vixen's Tea Birds who've just fallen out
- 20:03Speaker 1: of the top four, and then everybody else is on eight.
- 20:06Speaker 1: That's where it's congested down the bottom. It makes it
- 20:09Speaker 1: very interesting.
- 20:10Speaker 3: When you see that that ladder and Vixen sneaking up.
- 20:13Speaker 3: There were the other two games this weekend, whether the
- 20:16Speaker 3: local local derbies derbies what do you guys say derbies
- 20:19Speaker 3: or Derby's.
- 20:20Speaker 2: I say Derby, but I don't know, I say potato potato.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Okay, so two local potatoes, the Battle of the Bruce,
- 20:31Speaker 3: and interesting to see Lightning did that reasonially easily in
- 20:38Speaker 3: you know the on the five Birds time ground seven.
- 20:41Speaker 3: That seems sort of consolidate that third position. But you
- 20:44Speaker 3: know that that Vixen's Mavericks game, there's always just something
- 20:48Speaker 3: that little bit extras in there in the in the
- 20:50Speaker 3: Derby's and you know Vixen's that was such an important
- 20:55Speaker 3: win for them to sneak up into that top four.
- 20:57Speaker 3: So I reckon they're still a little bit to go
- 20:59Speaker 3: in the makeup of this. We've still got what six
- 21:01Speaker 3: rounds left, so five five rounds left, So I don't know, Catherine,
- 21:07Speaker 3: do you? I mean, who can you count anyone out?
- 21:10Speaker 3: At the moment. You've got MAVs, five Birds, Giants on eight.
- 21:14Speaker 3: That makes them what three wins out of the out
- 21:17Speaker 3: of the top four, So that makes it hard for them.
- 21:19Speaker 3: But Thunderbirds are still there or thereabouts, aren't they?
- 21:21Speaker 1: Yeah, they are. I can't see any of the top
- 21:24Speaker 1: four slipping out of the top four. Now. I wonder
- 21:27Speaker 1: when the Vixens, one of the Vixens and t Birds
- 21:29Speaker 1: play each other next, that'll be that'll be a telling game,
- 21:32Speaker 1: that one. I reckon. But the Vixen's talk of the
- 21:35Speaker 1: Vixens MAVs game, Liz, because that's obviously a Newish rivalry
- 21:40Speaker 1: and that only played each other three times prior Vixens
- 21:42Speaker 1: had taken all three wins. It was that first quarter.
- 21:46Speaker 1: It was seven zip to the Vixens within the first
- 21:49Speaker 1: five minutes. They came out of the blocks, but that's
- 21:52Speaker 1: where the margin stayed the entire game.
- 21:56Speaker 3: So had it not been frustrating, we just had have
- 22:00Speaker 3: started better.
- 22:02Speaker 1: So it had not been for that first five minutes
- 22:04Speaker 1: of the game it was, so it was only won
- 22:06Speaker 1: the difference in the second third and sorry, the second
- 22:08Speaker 1: third and fourth quarters after the blowout at the start,
- 22:12Speaker 1: I mean devastating that MAVs will learned from that. Obviously,
- 22:15Speaker 1: Kim Brown in a one hundredth game or so in
- 22:18Speaker 1: that one.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Was it Courtney Bruce's one hundred and fifty one fifty?
- 22:21Speaker 1: Yeah. The press conference after that game was fascinating too, though,
- 22:24Speaker 1: because she talked a lot about how it was quite
- 22:27Speaker 1: a dark time when she was going through that injury.
- 22:30Speaker 1: I reckon it was worse than we all thought, and
- 22:33Speaker 1: she even talked about, you know, the potential that she
- 22:35Speaker 1: didn't get back from it and that could have been
- 22:38Speaker 1: the end of her career. And she talked about the
- 22:40Speaker 1: youth coming through and how they're the future of the
- 22:43Speaker 1: club and that she won't be there forever. So it
- 22:45Speaker 1: was all really it sounded quite final. So I don't
- 22:49Speaker 1: know if she's looking to this being a last year
- 22:52Speaker 1: or she's just you know, grateful that she got through
- 22:54Speaker 1: those injuries unscathed.
- 22:56Speaker 2: I just think, what is she thirty one?
- 22:57Speaker 1: Yeah, she's not. I mean she's the same a just
- 23:00Speaker 1: most of the Australian team. I think they're all similar
- 23:02Speaker 1: in age. And now she's back to playing a best.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I'd hate to think she was going anywhere, but crazy
- 23:08Speaker 1: to think what the athletes are going through when they're
- 23:11Speaker 1: often injured and we just get on with it. We
- 23:13Speaker 1: talk about the ones that are on the court and
- 23:16Speaker 1: she's she you know, said a few times just how
- 23:19Speaker 1: difficult it wasn't a time for her.
- 23:20Speaker 3: Yeah that's interesting, and you know, you wonder if she's
- 23:23Speaker 3: had to sort of look the end of her career
- 23:25Speaker 3: in the eye, that might just make a bounce back
- 23:27Speaker 3: a bit higher. Like you know, when I did my knee,
- 23:30Speaker 3: I really had to had to ask myself, is if
- 23:34Speaker 3: I played my last game in Nettie and am I'm
- 23:36Speaker 3: going to come back? And you know, you go one
- 23:39Speaker 3: of two ways. You just accept it and you just
- 23:41Speaker 3: you know, fade away or you go nah and bounce back.
- 23:44Speaker 3: And I wonder if Courtney's had a good look and
- 23:47Speaker 3: she's you know, she's pretty relaxed about the fact that
- 23:49Speaker 3: there is youth coming through. But given that she's come
- 23:52Speaker 3: back and she's playing well, it's like maybe she's gone, nah,
- 23:55Speaker 3: I'm not over yet. Interesting to see.
- 23:58Speaker 1: You knew you would always be coming back from your knee,
- 24:00Speaker 1: They didn't you.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Oh, eventually I did. But you know, the first couple
- 24:05Speaker 3: of weeks after you have a major, like after you
- 24:08Speaker 3: sustain the injury, you just don't know. And I had
- 24:11Speaker 3: I had a couple of people ring me who I
- 24:14Speaker 3: really respected and said you could retire now and there
- 24:17Speaker 3: would be no shame in it. There would be You've
- 24:19Speaker 3: done everything right. And and I had to sort of
- 24:23Speaker 3: sit and think, well, is that good advice? Do I
- 24:26Speaker 3: take that advice? Do I just accept that this is
- 24:28Speaker 3: the end? And I made the decision and thought, now,
- 24:31Speaker 3: this is not the end for me. But I am
- 24:34Speaker 3: very comfortable with the I've got myself comfortable with the
- 24:36Speaker 3: fact that if I did everything that I could and
- 24:39Speaker 3: I didn't get back to where I wanted to be,
- 24:42Speaker 3: that I would be okay.
- 24:43Speaker 1: With that.
- 24:43Speaker 3: But if I didn't try, then I would never be
- 24:46Speaker 3: okay with it, right, So you've got to like it
- 24:48Speaker 3: took me two or three weeks, and it was really difficult,
- 24:51Speaker 3: as you know, Catherine, because the Commonwealth Games were coming up.
- 24:53Speaker 3: The team had to move on because.
- 24:55Speaker 2: They got the Naice track suits.
- 24:57Speaker 3: They got the good track suits, even though a silver
- 25:00Speaker 3: socks from Coxie that I've still got in one war
- 25:02Speaker 3: drive that I pull out and laugh at. Anyway, that's
- 25:04Speaker 3: whole another story. But you know, you have to sort
- 25:07Speaker 3: of sit there and go You have to get comfortable
- 25:09Speaker 3: with the fact that you might not and the moment
- 25:10Speaker 3: you get comfortable with that, then you can. It gives
- 25:12Speaker 3: you the freedom to go hard and try because you
- 25:15Speaker 3: know that if you give it your absolute best and
- 25:16Speaker 3: it doesn't work, then that's okay. And so you know
- 25:20Speaker 3: he caught me talk about that. Maybe she's stead in
- 25:23Speaker 3: the face and gone, yeah, okay, I'm comfortable with that,
- 25:25Speaker 3: but I'm not going to accept it. That's probably the thing,
- 25:27Speaker 3: and I'm going to go hard and see how good
- 25:29Speaker 3: I can be and how long I can play for.
- 25:32Speaker 3: And I know I was also like that with my retirement, right.
- 25:35Speaker 3: I knew I was, as Catherine knows, I had made
- 25:38Speaker 3: the decision earlier in the year, but I hadn't told anyone,
- 25:41Speaker 3: But I knew that the World Cup was going to
- 25:43Speaker 3: be the end of my career. When people say, well,
- 25:44Speaker 3: what if you had a lost and I was like,
- 25:47Speaker 3: I got comfortable with that well before I made the
- 25:49Speaker 3: decision that if we had lost that World Cup final
- 25:53Speaker 3: or that World Cup, if we didn't win it, I
- 25:54Speaker 3: would have been comfortable because knew I gave it everything
- 25:56Speaker 3: that I had. Once you get comfortable with the worst,
- 25:59Speaker 3: then you go now I'm ready to take on the best.
- 26:02Speaker 2: I wonder too, because you had thank.
- 26:03Speaker 3: You for coming to my Ted Talk, my Ted Talk.
- 26:07Speaker 2: You had told me that that was going to be
- 26:09Speaker 2: your last game. And I wonder whether there were like
- 26:13Speaker 2: a few people like I'm not I was not in
- 26:15Speaker 2: your inner circle then or anything, but whether that was
- 26:18Speaker 2: part of you going I'm committing to this. I've made
- 26:21Speaker 2: this decision. I want to make sure I hold myself
- 26:24Speaker 2: to it, so if we don't win the World Cup,
- 26:26Speaker 2: that I don't then try to go back. And you know,
- 26:28Speaker 2: I wonder whether in sharing that with a few more people,
- 26:31Speaker 2: you know me completely irrelevant to your career at that stage.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Now absolutely integral to your career obviously, but whether you
- 26:39Speaker 2: were actually somewhat subconsciously going I am committing to this
- 26:43Speaker 2: and I'm going to hold myself to it by making
- 26:45Speaker 2: more people aware.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Yeah. Possibly, And you know a few people did know,
- 26:50Speaker 3: so Coxing you, I mentioned it to you, like my
- 26:54Speaker 3: agent knew, my family knew, Julie Fitzgerald knew, and You're
- 27:02Speaker 3: right like you sort of and you tested out to
- 27:03Speaker 3: say it to see if it actually makes sense. And
- 27:05Speaker 3: I remember when I told cox Is she did not
- 27:07Speaker 3: take the news.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Well, no, it did not make any sense.
- 27:10Speaker 3: No, and we had to have a long lunch to
- 27:13Speaker 3: sort of work through it all. But I was pretty
- 27:15Speaker 3: committed to that was exactly what was going to happen.
- 27:17Speaker 2: So it was awesome. So yeah, and like.
- 27:24Speaker 3: It'll be interesting just watching Courtney then if she's she's
- 27:26Speaker 3: done that, I'm fascinated to see how well she goes
- 27:29Speaker 3: in in the next few years.
- 27:34Speaker 2: So, speaking of fairy tales, we need to talk about
- 27:36Speaker 2: the Valor Ribber's chipping comp and what is happening there
- 27:38Speaker 2: so very few people I think it was the giants
- 27:41Speaker 2: when very few people anticipated that this weekend, So only
- 27:46Speaker 2: six people got bingo this week.
- 27:48Speaker 1: So, yeah, that's amazing. I believe it. Yeah, that's good.
- 27:51Speaker 1: I wouldn't have expected that.
- 27:52Speaker 2: I was looking really good up until I got that.
- 27:57Speaker 2: I got the margin right, No, no, I did. I
- 27:59Speaker 2: didn't get these I tip the MAVs. I thought the
- 28:01Speaker 2: MAVs were going to get up to which you know,
- 28:04Speaker 2: hindsight right twenty twenty. But anyway, so we had six
- 28:07Speaker 2: people got bingo. We have Dimmy who got the Valor
- 28:11Speaker 2: Dribbler's weekly tipping comp. There three hundred and six people
- 28:15Speaker 2: got two points this week.
- 28:16Speaker 1: That's all.
- 28:17Speaker 2: That's what you got, is what I got. I think
- 28:18Speaker 2: Lizzie only got one. Was only one home game that
- 28:21Speaker 2: was that went?
- 28:24Speaker 1: Yes, it would have been the Vixen's.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Yes, that was a Vixen's home game, wasn't it? Yes?
- 28:28Speaker 2: So that was a So I prefer Quidditch is still
- 28:32Speaker 2: clear in top position and interesting on thirty seven points.
- 28:36Speaker 2: I prefer Quidditch has had bingo six out of nine rounds.
- 28:39Speaker 1: So what are they? What do they want? We don't know.
- 28:43Speaker 2: I don't know, Hayley, tell us your secrets. But there
- 28:46Speaker 2: are three people, four people sitting on thirty five points,
- 28:49Speaker 2: one point behind her, and they have had been go
- 28:53Speaker 2: Two of them have had it five out of nine
- 28:55Speaker 2: times and two of them have had it four out
- 28:56Speaker 2: of nine times. But I want to talk about something
- 28:59Speaker 2: much more import now, and that is the Golden Turkey.
- 29:02Speaker 2: We have one person who is sitting clear in last place.
- 29:06Speaker 2: That is Melly on twelve points. Now, you might think
- 29:09Speaker 2: Melly just doesn't put her tips in Melly tips every
- 29:13Speaker 2: single week.
- 29:14Speaker 1: One of Mellie's trying to lose.
- 29:15Speaker 2: I don't know, but anyway, well so.
- 29:18Speaker 1: And Melle, if you're not trying to lose, I'm sorry.
- 29:23Speaker 2: I think it's terrific.
- 29:24Speaker 1: I love it.
- 29:25Speaker 2: So as someone who's sitting in four hundred and twenty
- 29:27Speaker 2: first place, I want to be there with Melly at
- 29:31Speaker 2: five hundred and fifty first. So she's on twelve points,
- 29:34Speaker 2: there's two people on fourteen points. That's soap and cozy.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Now they've had two rounds where it's just been the
- 29:41Speaker 2: default tips, but have also been tipping every other but
- 29:44Speaker 2: Mellys has fastidiously and religiously entered tips every single week
- 29:50Speaker 2: and after nine rounds, has a score of twelve points. Melle, time,
- 29:54Speaker 2: mel salute you as a lover of the game, and
- 29:59Speaker 2: we know that not all joy comes in winning. But yeah,
- 30:03Speaker 2: I think you're looking really good for the Golden Turkey
- 30:06Speaker 2: and I am rooting for you.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Yeah, well done. I'm not sure what to say. I'm
- 30:11Speaker 1: just hoping that you're trying to tip the losing size. Dear,
- 30:17Speaker 1: Where am I these days? Where are you?
- 30:18Speaker 2: You're sitting in eighteenth place, which is good. So Lez
- 30:22Speaker 2: is on seventeen points. So tipping only the home teams
- 30:25Speaker 2: has not is not the easy art. So you know,
- 30:28Speaker 2: you would think generally it's a much stronger home ground
- 30:31Speaker 2: advantage than it is so to be. Yeah, so you're
- 30:34Speaker 2: sitting in eighteenth, Gordy's on three hundred and sixty sixth,
- 30:37Speaker 2: I'm four twenty first, Liz five hundred and forty third,
- 30:42Speaker 2: And in our little sexy comp there are five cats
- 30:45Speaker 2: in the top ten. Yeah girls two Carolyn's two, Susan's
- 30:48Speaker 2: one Elizabeth. So yeah, so that's an interesting study of
- 30:53Speaker 2: our names versus our tipping competence.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Well done, everyone. Now I've got I've got some shout
- 30:59Speaker 1: out that's from socials. I still can't get hold of
- 31:03Speaker 1: the messages that are in there. There's now six of them,
- 31:05Speaker 1: and it's driving me batty because it's probably interesting stuff.
- 31:09Speaker 1: What I can see those are the messages that go
- 31:11Speaker 1: on after we post something, so not the private messages.
- 31:16Speaker 1: So off the back of the word will chat. Last week,
- 31:18Speaker 1: so many people wrote up what their words are, and
- 31:22Speaker 1: this one made me laugh my head off. So Lisa Yop,
- 31:26Speaker 1: her mum always chooses her word based on what's happening
- 31:31Speaker 1: that day, so she changes her word every day. So
- 31:33Speaker 1: she had a wedding one day, so she put lover
- 31:36Speaker 1: as her first word. She got it into it was
- 31:40Speaker 1: actually loser.
- 31:45Speaker 3: Oh my god, I cried.
- 31:47Speaker 1: I thought, I hope that's not a theme for the wedding.
- 31:50Speaker 1: And then Lisa Green. I'm not sure if Lisa needs
- 31:54Speaker 1: a little hug or something, but the two words she
- 31:57Speaker 1: always starts with are steel or cheat. Be a tough
- 32:04Speaker 1: week for Lisa anyway, Thanks guys. It was very interesting
- 32:08Speaker 1: some of the words that came up there. I'm going
- 32:09Speaker 1: to use them.
- 32:10Speaker 2: People feel very strongly about it. Someone suggested we play
- 32:13Speaker 2: a game and it's called Semantle, and I appreciate the recommendation,
- 32:17Speaker 2: but this thing, it's like doing a two thousand word
- 32:20Speaker 2: jigsaw puzzle that you just go I can't stop this
- 32:23Speaker 2: because I've started it, but I'm hating this, so yeah,
- 32:28Speaker 2: so I've done I tried Semantle a couple of times,
- 32:31Speaker 2: couldn't do it. Tried Semantle Junior, couldn't do it. So
- 32:34Speaker 2: it's like, look, I'm I'm out, so you just have
- 32:37Speaker 2: to be I don't really understand how it works. It's
- 32:40Speaker 2: not based on the letters in the word. It's based
- 32:42Speaker 2: on the meaning of the word. And then you get
- 32:45Speaker 2: told whether you're cold or warm, and then you can
- 32:48Speaker 2: have as many hints as you want. By the looks
- 32:50Speaker 2: of things, I know, Yeah, it's just it's it's hard,
- 32:54Speaker 2: and it was not good for my self esteem because
- 32:56Speaker 2: I do tride myself on being reasonably good at these types.
- 33:00Speaker 2: It's like, I don't even understand what's going on here.
- 33:02Speaker 2: I mean, of course, first time I did it, I
- 33:03Speaker 2: didn't read the instructions because well, why would you. It's
- 33:06Speaker 2: just an online game you work out apparently not apparently
- 33:09Speaker 2: I couldn't do that.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Okay, hey can we chat about quickly? To the World
- 33:14Speaker 1: Cup format changes the world that's been released and it's
- 33:18Speaker 1: now they're playing for a World Cup, and then there's
- 33:21Speaker 1: a plate on offer. So what that means is that
- 33:25Speaker 1: the top so after the first round, where you basically
- 33:29Speaker 1: play your own pool, it kind of decides who the
- 33:32Speaker 1: top eight are and who the bottom mate are. The
- 33:34Speaker 1: top eight obviously play out for the World Cup and
- 33:37Speaker 1: then the bottom mate have their own competition then and
- 33:39Speaker 1: they will play for the plate, which is I think fantastic.
- 33:43Speaker 1: So it keeps competitiveness across the World Cup going a
- 33:46Speaker 1: lot longer, and also fan engagement so you know, supporters
- 33:49Speaker 1: of whichever country can still go and see something fantastic
- 33:52Speaker 1: playing off, which I love. I also love that it's
- 33:56Speaker 1: going to be one venue only, so every single country,
- 33:59Speaker 1: every single game will be on the one court, which
- 34:03Speaker 1: will be amazing. So some of the smaller countries get
- 34:05Speaker 1: to play on the court that will eventually have the
- 34:07Speaker 1: gold medal game on it. But the best bit is
- 34:10Speaker 1: it's now played across twelve days, which for player welfare
- 34:15Speaker 1: well being, I think it's firstly so important because otherwise
- 34:18Speaker 1: it's every day, and by the end of it, when
- 34:21Speaker 1: you get to a gold medal game, it's literally survival
- 34:23Speaker 1: of the fittest, isn't it. Whoever you can get on
- 34:24Speaker 1: court with all their limbs still attached and can get
- 34:27Speaker 1: through that final sixty minutes wins the gold. But I
- 34:30Speaker 1: also think it's really good because the hype of a
- 34:33Speaker 1: World Cup is so great, but then its ours is
- 34:35Speaker 1: over so quickly. So I love that this is going
- 34:38Speaker 1: to have a little bit longer for people to get
- 34:41Speaker 1: on board the train, enjoy you know, what's happening all
- 34:44Speaker 1: around it, and the hype of it all I think
- 34:46Speaker 1: is really cool.
- 34:47Speaker 2: So I hope it is sustainable from a crowd perspective, so,
- 34:52Speaker 2: you know, like the men's sports. So I got on
- 34:55Speaker 2: a queue last week and got some tickets for the Ashes,
- 34:58Speaker 2: and when I got online the pre sale, I was
- 35:01Speaker 2: nearly one hundred and seventy thousandth in the play. We
- 35:05Speaker 2: don't get those sorts of numbers for our sport. Yet
- 35:08Speaker 2: it's growing and it's certainly, you know, certainly improving, but
- 35:12Speaker 2: I just worry about if you extend it. You know,
- 35:15Speaker 2: people have been traveling and they go, I mean, I'll
- 35:17Speaker 2: go for the whole time. Can they go for twelve
- 35:20Speaker 2: days of it? If it's all in one place, and
- 35:22Speaker 2: you know, like the Rugby World Cup, they have games
- 35:24Speaker 2: in different places and things, and crowds will move around
- 35:26Speaker 2: and follow it, or you've at least got the local
- 35:28Speaker 2: crowd from you know, the Melbourne people and the Geelong
- 35:31Speaker 2: people will go to the games that are in Melbourne
- 35:33Speaker 2: and whatever else and everyone will travel for the finals.
- 35:35Speaker 2: So I just I really like the sound of it,
- 35:38Speaker 2: but we need to get behind it, you know, we
- 35:41Speaker 2: netball fans need to need to physically show up to
- 35:46Speaker 2: this stuff.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Like it's just.
- 35:49Speaker 2: My lesson is now over.
- 35:51Speaker 3: I do think though, it's an important change with the
- 35:53Speaker 3: cup and the plate, for like, for those lower rate
- 35:57Speaker 3: nations to a still be playing for something. But if
- 35:59Speaker 3: you're rate ninth in the world, but you can go
- 36:01Speaker 3: back to your government and say, yeah, we want a plate,
- 36:03Speaker 3: it actually helps you out when you're looking for funding
- 36:07Speaker 3: and investment from your government. So it's actually a really
- 36:10Speaker 3: important thing for those lower rate nations to be able
- 36:12Speaker 3: to create that second tier so that they are competing
- 36:15Speaker 3: for something and they can come home with some silverware.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Yeah. I guess it's tough though, if you if you
- 36:21Speaker 2: come eighth in the top tier and it's like, well
- 36:24Speaker 2: we'd come ninth, we would have had we'd have a blake,
- 36:27Speaker 2: but we have nothing.
- 36:28Speaker 1: But that's interesting because I wonder if people will jostle
- 36:32Speaker 1: for that. I mean, I guess you'd have to keep
- 36:34Speaker 1: an eye on the scores because also the scores that
- 36:37Speaker 1: accumulate in the first round of the pool, then it
- 36:40Speaker 1: goes back to zero after that when you move on
- 36:42Speaker 1: to the next one, so it starts again. That's how
- 36:44Speaker 1: they will determine eventually who wins the thing. So it's interesting,
- 36:48Speaker 1: but I love the changes made. Yes, I think that's
- 36:50Speaker 1: very exciting.
- 36:52Speaker 3: I think the crowd stuff is interesting too. So back
- 36:54Speaker 3: in twenty fifteen there were bumper crowds and I'm actually
- 36:57Speaker 3: quite confident that those bumper crowds will turn up again.
- 37:00Speaker 3: But then it's just, you know, the new CEO has
- 37:03Speaker 3: been announced. He's seen how Football have run their Women's
- 37:06Speaker 3: World Cup, and the way you sort of attract those
- 37:09Speaker 3: crowds is to create a real carnival sort of atmosphere
- 37:12Speaker 3: around the game. So to make sure you've got something more,
- 37:15Speaker 3: you know, than just turning out to a netball game.
- 37:16Speaker 3: There's lots to do and Sydney's a big enough city
- 37:18Speaker 3: that I think we could sell it out and then
- 37:20Speaker 3: you get people traveling probably for the start or for
- 37:23Speaker 3: the end. So it's just about making sure the offering's
- 37:26Speaker 3: really good.
- 37:27Speaker 2: Well, I hope so, yeah, I mean twenty fifteen was amazing.
- 37:30Speaker 2: But anyway, it's just an observation that it's like we
- 37:33Speaker 2: are not and we're not. No one's spending as much
- 37:38Speaker 2: on netball tickets as they are on AFL and rugby,
- 37:40Speaker 2: and that's good. I think it's good. I don't want
- 37:43Speaker 2: the sport to start pricing it, you know, astronomically like
- 37:46Speaker 2: those are, But I just I hope that the crowd
- 37:50Speaker 2: will move with this. But you know, like you, I'm confident,
- 37:55Speaker 2: we're loyal, we're.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Dedicated, and start saving the money now, because you'll also
- 38:00Speaker 1: a live event for No Dribble somewhere in the mix.
- 38:03Speaker 2: Very good.
- 38:03Speaker 1: I love that.
- 38:04Speaker 2: So we are. We are having some trouble here with
- 38:07Speaker 2: the connectivity. Obviously, the fine weather up in the northern
- 38:10Speaker 2: New South Wales is making the internet go a bit haywire.
- 38:14Speaker 2: So but I think that that's probably almost all we've
- 38:17Speaker 2: got time for anyway. Today, it's yeah, it's been another
- 38:22Speaker 2: great week Round nine. Only got a few more weeks
- 38:25Speaker 2: to go, and yeah, it's just getting more and more exciting. Oh, Liz,
- 38:28Speaker 2: I do want to point out last week you said
- 38:31Speaker 2: the bottom four ranked teams will have a huge say
- 38:35Speaker 2: on who the top four are. And did that not
- 38:37Speaker 2: one hundred percent come true on the week that we
- 38:40Speaker 2: have just seen. So every game is.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Exciting and yeah, go.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Netball, Go netball, and thanks for the cake, Oh pleasure.
- 38:48Speaker 1: I do feel sick. I do feel sick. Just how
- 38:52Speaker 1: good was the icy butter cream?
- 38:56Speaker 2: But in my happy birthday to us? So just final shout,
- 39:00Speaker 2: We've got to talk about Patrick the Mopman being on
- 39:02Speaker 2: Sunrise and giving the podcast a shout out. God love him?
- 39:05Speaker 1: Yeah you Patrick, and he did a little dance.
- 39:08Speaker 2: You had a little thing going on. Yes, So I
- 39:11Speaker 2: have a plan, And Liz, your internet isn't working so
- 39:14Speaker 2: I won't be able to hear if you refuse to
- 39:16Speaker 2: do this. But I'm going to get Patrick to choreograph
- 39:18Speaker 2: a dance for the three of us. Oh Jesus, oh God,
- 39:22Speaker 2: oh your frozen. So I can't hear you. Yeah, okay
- 39:28Speaker 2: in favor say nothing, okay, so passed.
- 39:30Speaker 3: No, I'm saying lots. I'm saying lots. I'm talking. I'm talking,
- 39:33Speaker 3: I'm talking, I'm talking.
- 39:34Speaker 2: We got ere you.
- 39:35Speaker 1: I need instant to warm up though, because he has
- 39:37Speaker 1: got a high kick on him, he does hammy snaps.
- 39:40Speaker 2: Oh gee. I laughed though on Sunrise that they he'd
- 39:43Speaker 2: just come off doing this very athletic little performance and
- 39:47Speaker 2: then they go straight into an interview and yeah, so
- 39:55Speaker 2: my thoughts went out to you, Patrick, because that's how
- 39:57Speaker 2: I feel every time I wring my mother if I'm
- 39:59Speaker 2: out for a walk, I hang on mum. Now I'm
- 40:01Speaker 2: just gotta you talk.
- 40:03Speaker 1: For a bit.
- 40:06Speaker 2: Alrighty well, everyone, have a great week. Don't forget to
- 40:08Speaker 2: put your tips in for the Valor Dribblers tipping camp
- 40:11Speaker 2: and uh yes, stay six see guys. Bye bye,
