- 0:41Speaker 1: These stories aren't just crazy, with their cautionary tales about
- 0:45Speaker 1: lessons learned the hard way. Let's get started. But hey, everyone,
- 0:50Speaker 1: welcome back to the Bad Hire. That's the show where
- 0:53Speaker 1: the best stories about the worst hires are bad interviews.

- 1:02Speaker 1: you doing fantastic? How about yourself? And Corey was on
- 1:06Speaker 1: here last Corey was on here the last show, and
- 1:09Speaker 1: everybody got introduced to him as as the guy who
- 1:13Speaker 1: screens the talent for the show. All the guests guest,
- 1:19Speaker 1: what do you what do you call it? What do
- 1:20Speaker 1: we get? Coordinator? Guest coordinator. There we go. He is
- 1:24Speaker 1: a coordinator.
- 1:26Speaker 2: That first episode, was it good?
- 1:27Speaker 1: I was phenomenal? Yeah? Good. And we were just we
- 1:31Speaker 1: were talking about how you know, how many people we
- 1:34Speaker 1: have in the like eighty people in the pipeline of
- 1:37Speaker 1: just like have asked to be on the show, and
- 1:41Speaker 1: and you know it's I told him, well, Corey's the
- 1:44Speaker 1: Corey's the man. He's gonna he's gonna be the one
- 1:45Speaker 1: that gives you a call. He's going to be uh,
- 1:47Speaker 1: he's gonna reach out to you, schedule, schedule it and
- 1:51Speaker 1: get your booked one and U for a segment. I think, yeah,
- 1:55Speaker 1: so he didn't. He did good. We're doing good. Are
- 2:02Speaker 1: our views? Are our views to it? They're doing pretty
- 2:05Speaker 1: pretty consistent, aren't they? Yeah, they're growing, they are. They are.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Oh nice, that's good, good job, thanks Pubet. I don't
- 2:16Speaker 1: know we've told people before. You do all the social media, right, yes.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I think last week we talked about it because remember
- 2:22Speaker 2: we had that story. I was like, oh, how much
- 2:24Speaker 2: of this do you do?
- 2:25Speaker 1: Oh? Ye?
- 2:26Speaker 2: Then and then you asked me how much of the
- 2:28Speaker 2: socials do you do?
- 2:30Speaker 1: All of the Oh my gosh, all right, so h
- 2:35Speaker 1: so listen, you know the drill. We're going to tell
- 2:38Speaker 1: some stories today about bad hires, bad interviews, whatever it
- 2:41Speaker 1: might be. But we want the stories to be yours
- 2:44Speaker 1: all the time, and so we need you to submit
- 2:45Speaker 1: the stories. Do exactly what you're doing. Reach out, go
- 2:49Speaker 1: to our website, the badhire dot com, and complete a
- 2:52Speaker 1: form this is hey, I'm interested, and be on the show.
- 2:54Speaker 1: We're submitting a story. We'll filter that through, figure out
- 2:59Speaker 1: a way to get either the story or you onto
- 3:01Speaker 1: the show. And then at the end of the year,
- 3:04Speaker 1: when we're all done, we're gonna look back over all
- 3:07Speaker 1: the stories, and we're gonna pick the very best one,
- 3:10Speaker 1: you know, whether that be a like super sad story
- 3:12Speaker 1: or fun redeeming whatever. I think there's all kinds of
- 3:16Speaker 1: stories that we hear and and then we'll give ten
- 3:20Speaker 1: thousand dollars to the winner. So I'm excited about that,
- 3:23Speaker 1: and so ten thousand dollars could be yours. Just have fun.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Send us the story. When that end, I think at
- 3:31Speaker 1: the at the end of one year. So we'll do it,
- 3:33Speaker 1: you know, all the way through to the Oh good,
- 3:37Speaker 1: you know, we're about plenty of time.
- 3:38Speaker 2: People, Please send them in, please.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Please, send it in. We're actually you know, if we can, well,
- 3:52Speaker 1: we'll have another we'll have another segment, video segment today
- 3:55Speaker 1: with so we'll see how that goes. All right, we
- 3:57Speaker 1: gotta we got to figure out to be really great
- 3:59Speaker 1: at that. And I've got a story here and so
- 4:02Speaker 1: I'll kick it off. We had an interview and then
- 4:07Speaker 1: made an offer to a young woman for an admin
- 4:10Speaker 1: assistant job. Everything seemed great. Then her background check comes back.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Oh okay, the two d with two d U I
- 4:21Speaker 1: s and an illegal substance conviction.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Dang, dang it, it'd be like that, you know, there
- 4:28Speaker 2: it is, yeah for real?
- 4:30Speaker 1: Yeah, sometimes what we'll see what she had to You know,
- 4:35Speaker 1: during the interview, I had told all the candidates there'll
- 4:39Speaker 1: be a there will be a criminal and driving record check.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Is there anything I need to know? Said a deadly question.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Anything you need to know?
- 4:49Speaker 2: We get those stories.
- 4:50Speaker 1: She looked dead in the face and said, nope, nothing.
- 4:54Speaker 2: We get those stories a lot where people were there
- 4:57Speaker 2: in the interview like, oh, like we have to run this,
- 5:00Speaker 2: is there anything I should know about? And every time
- 5:02Speaker 2: they're like, oh no, you're good, But then like it
- 5:07Speaker 2: comes back in. It's always like the most awful wall
- 5:09Speaker 2: thing too. It's like, oh, arson charge or something or
- 5:14Speaker 2: something crazy like that. One beforehand they're like, oh no,
- 5:17Speaker 2: I'm good, I'm clean.
- 5:18Speaker 1: So she's asked, is there anything we need to know?
- 5:20Speaker 1: She looks for dead the face and says no, nothing. Yeah,
- 5:23Speaker 1: and then so HR calls or later to withdraw the offer,
- 5:27Speaker 1: probably for two things. Right, they could probably look past
- 5:29Speaker 1: the DUIs, but they're looking them straight in the face.
- 5:32Speaker 1: And the line. It's an issue, right, tell the truth.
- 5:35Speaker 2: That might be a red flag.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Yes, maybe it's a bigger red flag than the DUI probably,
- 5:40Speaker 1: so A little later she calls back and leaves a
- 5:42Speaker 1: voicemail asking if there's anything she can do. HR tells me,
- 5:47Speaker 1: you need to come listen to this. So I go
- 5:48Speaker 1: into HR comes there, says, hey, you need to come
- 5:52Speaker 1: listen to this. I guess it's the voicemail. So I
- 5:55Speaker 1: go into their office. We hit play, and this is
- 5:58Speaker 1: what happened. After thirty seven seconds of asking if there's
- 6:01Speaker 1: anything she can do, she thought she hung up the phone.
- 6:06Speaker 1: She did not. So then on the voicemail was they
- 6:09Speaker 1: solid ten minutes of her screaming at her dad. Her
- 6:13Speaker 1: dad was saying, what did you expect what's gonna happen
- 6:16Speaker 1: during the background check process. Oh, she's losing it and
- 6:22Speaker 1: screaming angrily. So it seemed to us like, you know,
- 6:26Speaker 1: like a dodge bullet for them anyway, So thank goodness
- 6:29Speaker 1: for background checks. That's so funny. Oh I feel don't
- 6:34Speaker 1: you feel better for that? Dad? Just ah, I know,
- 6:37Speaker 1: just you know, your daughter yelling at you.
- 6:41Speaker 4: You know, do you think she would have got that
- 6:43Speaker 4: job if she was just honest?
- 6:45Speaker 1: I think there's a chance, right. I mean, I'm a
- 6:49Speaker 1: big believer in second chances, and I think most people
- 6:52Speaker 1: if you give them some context and you can say
- 6:55Speaker 1: you if she just started out with yes, I have
- 6:57Speaker 1: two deep duy's yeah, and abuse, and that was a
- 7:01Speaker 1: terrible part of my time life when I did have
- 7:03Speaker 1: my priorities together. And since then, here's what I've done,
- 7:07Speaker 1: pup up, up, up up. And so today I'm looking to,
- 7:10Speaker 1: you know, take another step forward. I'm hoping you could
- 7:12Speaker 1: help me with that step.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I think it definitely would have helped her out a lot.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I was just honest, right, But as soon as you know,
- 7:18Speaker 1: you say you're looking at is this gonna you ask?
- 7:21Speaker 1: You look at that on the on the background check
- 7:24Speaker 1: report and you go yours. First thing you do is go,
- 7:27Speaker 1: is this going to be a problem, And then you
- 7:28Speaker 1: look and well she lied about it, right? It just
- 7:33Speaker 1: mean and also no context, didn't tell the story, didn't
- 7:36Speaker 1: try to you know, shape it in any way, and
- 7:39Speaker 1: and and it's just hope they don't see it. That's
- 7:42Speaker 1: not really a good strategy.
- 7:43Speaker 2: I was just about to say, Like it also just
- 7:45Speaker 2: goes to show like there's a lot of people that
- 7:47Speaker 2: like don't know what will show up, if it will
- 7:50Speaker 2: show up, or if it won't right, you know, like
- 7:52Speaker 2: they get the charge on like, oh, they're not going
- 7:54Speaker 2: to see that, like it's gone.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Now, yeah, like whatever, But well, key takeaways hang up
- 8:00Speaker 4: the phone out there, call and don't.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Get that bad.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Please make sure you hang up. And also don't lie.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Oh yeah, she was probably so furious, you know, and
- 8:12Speaker 1: just so distraught over it that she's just like, ye
- 8:16Speaker 1: went out of her didn't didn't it? I don't know,
- 8:18Speaker 1: feel bad for her luck on the next one.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Before we dive back into the chaos on the bad hire.

- 8:59Speaker 1: Go to b checks.
- 9:00Speaker 3: That's BC h ex dot io.
- 9:06Speaker 1: All right, so we gotta we got a riverside to react. Well,
- 9:08Speaker 1: we've got a segment here with I think Michael Smith
- 9:13Speaker 1: and did an interview segment with with Nathan So let's
- 9:17Speaker 1: take a look.
- 9:18Speaker 5: When I first came out of college, I went to
- 9:20Speaker 5: work at a Wall Street bank. And this Wall Street bank,
- 9:23Speaker 5: they had a management training program. The idea was bring
- 9:26Speaker 5: you in, train you up, and you'll manage you know,
- 9:29Speaker 5: groups and stuff. And it's on the operation side, not
- 9:31Speaker 5: the glamorous. So we're down there working away in the
- 9:34Speaker 5: basement of that bank. But they would put you in
- 9:36Speaker 5: charge of a group. So I had a group called
- 9:39Speaker 5: Bond Redemption. I had a staff of thirty five people,
- 9:43Speaker 5: and I mean these folks were just working, pounding away
- 9:46Speaker 5: every day. Well, I had this one young lady who
- 9:49Speaker 5: just quit coming to work. She was very nice when
- 9:51Speaker 5: she had been there, but then she quit coming to work.
- 9:54Speaker 5: And I make calls and all this kinds of that,
- 9:56Speaker 5: can't find her, can't find her at all. The hr
- 9:58Speaker 5: Lady's like, here's all the things you have to do.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Do So I'm going through an endless list of all
- 10:02Speaker 5: these documents I have to get together and things after
- 10:05Speaker 5: document going forward, did all that, I'm just sweating bullets
- 10:08Speaker 5: because I'm like, I got to get rid of this person.
- 10:11Speaker 5: I'm going to destroy their life. She actually came eventually,
- 10:14Speaker 5: long story short, ended up firing her. Fast forward to
- 10:17Speaker 5: about six months later. I was up at one of
- 10:19Speaker 5: those branches and lo and behold behind the counter is
- 10:23Speaker 5: the lady I had fired six months earlier. I was nervous,
- 10:26Speaker 5: but she came over to me, gives me a big hug.
- 10:28Speaker 5: Oh you know how you doing? How's things?
- 10:30Speaker 1: How these people?
- 10:31Speaker 5: Turns out she went on a coke bender for about
- 10:33Speaker 5: three weeks. You know, she party, party partied. She comes
- 10:37Speaker 5: back to work, confesses that that's what she was doing.
- 10:40Speaker 5: The bank goes, not a problem, what we're gonna do
- 10:43Speaker 5: is we're gonna put you in a rehab program, and
- 10:45Speaker 5: then brought her back, gave her the job at work,
- 10:48Speaker 5: changed your life.
- 10:49Speaker 1: You know.
- 10:50Speaker 5: Meanwhile, I'm over here going I've ruined this person's life,
- 10:55Speaker 5: you know, so and actually is probably the best thing
- 10:58Speaker 5: that ever happened to her.
- 10:59Speaker 1: I guess, Oh my.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Gosh, it's actually a really good story.
- 11:05Speaker 1: I love it. I love hearing great stories of redemption
- 11:09Speaker 1: of and I love to how love Michael is like
- 11:12Speaker 1: in there, he said I'm going to ruin her life,
- 11:15Speaker 1: and you're like, you know, when you hear that, you're like,
- 11:17Speaker 1: what is is he? Like? Is he going after her? Yeah?
- 11:20Speaker 1: Coming to work for him?
- 11:21Speaker 2: Sounded very ominously.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Yeah, really I did. But he's really saying, yeah, no,
- 11:27Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't really want to mire bad,
- 11:30Speaker 1: feel terrible. Yeah, what a good dude. You know. He's like,
- 11:34Speaker 1: she's making his life hard because he's, you know, trying
- 11:36Speaker 1: to manage the people, and he's chasing her around and
- 11:39Speaker 1: and he's he's worried, you know, about about her. And
- 11:45Speaker 1: but what a good story. And I love that about
- 11:48Speaker 1: the I love that about the bank. You know, Yeah,
- 11:53Speaker 1: some you know, HR organizes a way to try to
- 11:56Speaker 1: intervene for people, and you know, everybody some some people
- 12:00Speaker 1: are worse than their bad you know, some people are
- 12:01Speaker 1: worse everyone's everyone's better than their worst moments, right, you know.
- 12:06Speaker 1: And so I think that's very cool.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a good one.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Great story of redemption. I think, and and and how
- 12:15Speaker 1: a company can actually be an advocate for an employee.
- 12:18Speaker 1: I think that's cool. Yeah, all right, so Emma, what's up?
- 12:22Speaker 1: All right? Word? Is you have a story today?
- 12:27Speaker 2: I have two. They're kind of short, though, so I mean, whatever, Okay,
- 12:32Speaker 2: here's the first one. During an interview, I asked a
- 12:35Speaker 2: woman one of my favorite questions, tell me three things
- 12:38Speaker 2: that are out of your comfort zone. She thinks for
- 12:41Speaker 2: a second and goes talking to people using computers and
- 12:45Speaker 2: phones and learning new things. Folks, this is a call
- 12:49Speaker 2: center job. You spend all day talking on the phone,
- 12:54Speaker 2: all day on a computer, and you're constantly learning new systems.
- 12:58Speaker 2: She knew exactly what the job was, we had talked
- 13:01Speaker 2: about it on the phone like beforehand before coming into
- 13:05Speaker 2: the interview.
- 13:05Speaker 1: All of that.
- 13:06Speaker 2: She also had zero experience in the medical field. And
- 13:09Speaker 2: this is a medical call center. So really like like
- 13:13Speaker 2: double like double way me there, so she already knew
- 13:17Speaker 2: there would be a steep learning curve. And at that
- 13:19Speaker 2: point I stopped the interview and said, I don't want
- 13:22Speaker 2: to waste any more of your time or hours. And
- 13:25Speaker 2: then I asked her why are you here, and she goes,
- 13:28Speaker 2: it's required for unemployment. So I told her in our state,
- 13:31Speaker 2: you don't actually have to interview to meet that requirement.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Please don't waste people's time like this in the future.
- 13:39Speaker 2: And that's that's the end. That's the end of the story.
- 13:42Speaker 1: That's hilarious. That is that is a like just a
- 13:46Speaker 1: conundrum where you're required to go, but they really don't
- 13:49Speaker 1: want a job. You know. It's like she's made up
- 13:51Speaker 1: her mind clearly she didn't want to or or she
- 13:54Speaker 1: or she's got to go regardless of who's an interviewers,
- 13:57Speaker 1: like it's not what I want, but I have to
- 14:00Speaker 1: get an interview in yeah, you know.
- 14:02Speaker 2: I just think it's so funny when we get stories
- 14:05Speaker 2: like that of people that like applied for the job
- 14:08Speaker 2: and they are completely like not qualified for it at all,
- 14:13Speaker 2: or like don't like any of the requirements of like
- 14:17Speaker 2: what you have to do for the job.
- 14:19Speaker 1: My question is, how how did she get there. Yeah right,
- 14:22Speaker 1: I wan must have written on a resume that, you know,
- 14:24Speaker 1: like the perfect resume.
- 14:26Speaker 2: We read this story one time of this person that
- 14:28Speaker 2: applied for this one specific job of how they're like
- 14:33Speaker 2: scared of the dark or something, but the job was
- 14:35Speaker 2: for a night security card. It was kind of reminded
- 14:41Speaker 2: me of that a little bit, and it was.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Like them's like the story malt right, Like she remembers
- 14:47Speaker 1: every year. She's like remember the story, And I'm like,
- 14:50Speaker 1: I don't remember that because remember, but she does. She remembers,
- 14:54Speaker 1: like she's like got this like perfect memory. All right,
- 14:59Speaker 1: So you got another, Yeah I do. Let's try it
- 15:01Speaker 1: out right. Here we go.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Years ago, I was overseeing admissions for a highly competitive
- 15:06Speaker 2: university department. We received an enormous number of applications for
- 15:10Speaker 2: very few spots. Every decision mattered, and the process was
- 15:14Speaker 2: tightly controlled. One year, an assistant we had recently hired
- 15:17Speaker 2: was tasked with sending out acceptance emails. Somewhere along the way,
- 15:21Speaker 2: they accidentally filtered recipients by first name instead of acceptance status.
- 15:25Speaker 2: So every applicant named Kevin received an acceptance letter. Every
- 15:31Speaker 2: applicant named Kevin received an acceptance letter, because when they
- 15:36Speaker 2: sent out the emails, you can filter them by different things,
- 15:40Speaker 2: and they filtered it by first name inste like the
- 15:44Speaker 2: status of their acceptance. So if your name's Kevin and
- 15:47Speaker 2: you failed, the thing, turns out you got You got
- 15:50Speaker 2: accepted anyways, because of this mistake maade by the I'm
- 15:55Speaker 2: not sure, but since it was highly competitive, they had
- 15:58Speaker 2: a bunch of applicants, so I'm assuming there was quite
- 16:02Speaker 2: a few Kevins.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 16:03Speaker 2: It doesn't say, but I realized the mistake almost immediately
- 16:08Speaker 2: after the email went out. There was no recalling them,
- 16:11Speaker 2: so I stepped in and sent a follow up explaining
- 16:13Speaker 2: the error, clarifying everyone's actual status, and apologizing. Thankfully, all
- 16:18Speaker 2: of the Kevins were incredibly understanding, some either. Some even
- 16:26Speaker 2: responded with the jokes. It was embarrassing, but to turned
- 16:29Speaker 2: into a teachable moment about systems, safeguards and the importance
- 16:33Speaker 2: of double checking before hitting send. Yeah, nice, check before
- 16:38Speaker 2: you hit sind. I mean there are worse things you
- 16:40Speaker 2: could send.
- 16:42Speaker 1: But didn't accept that.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Yes, there are definitely worse things you could be saying.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Tells me, there's already been a story sometime. We've told previously,
- 16:50Speaker 1: she's going through a data bak traight now.
- 16:53Speaker 2: So I just didn't know if you wanted me to something.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Heavens, I know, I bet there's a I actually bet
- 17:03Speaker 1: there's a ton of stories.
- 17:05Speaker 2: There definitely are people who so sorry to all the
- 17:08Speaker 2: Kevins everywhere.
- 17:10Speaker 1: All right, Corey, really good stuff. All right.
- 17:16Speaker 4: So about thirty five years ago, I was training a
- 17:18Speaker 4: brand new midnight security officer at a large Hilton hotel.
- 17:22Speaker 4: It was his fourth night, around three am, and I
- 17:25Speaker 4: was walking him through the fire alarm system. We were
- 17:28Speaker 4: all at the pool station and I had it open
- 17:30Speaker 4: to show him how to replace the glass rod if
- 17:32Speaker 4: I ever or if it ever got activated. I explained
- 17:36Speaker 4: how the whole thing worked and asked if he understood.
- 17:39Speaker 1: He nodded, Oh.
- 17:40Speaker 4: Boy, here's where I messed up. I nodded back and
- 17:44Speaker 4: tilted my head toward the exposed switch, meaning got it,
- 17:48Speaker 4: not touched this. But I didn't say a word. He
- 17:52Speaker 4: looked confused, looked at me again, and I nodded one
- 17:54Speaker 4: more time. Stop nodding, man, what so next thing I know,
- 18:06Speaker 4: he flips the switch, fire alarm activated. My stomach dropped.
- 18:10Speaker 4: I immediately radioed the switchboard to report a false alarm,
- 18:14Speaker 4: but it didn't matter. The system was hardwired, hardwired to
- 18:17Speaker 4: the fire department. Minutes later, five fire trucks came screaming
- 18:22Speaker 4: down the street, lights and sirens blazing. I watched my
- 18:26Speaker 4: trainee sheepishly explain to fire captain what happened, then then
- 18:32Speaker 4: led a full crew of firefighters to pull this sorry
- 18:35Speaker 4: to the pool station. The captain told us he'd never
- 18:38Speaker 4: seen someone activate and alarm during training in over thirty years. Thankfully,
- 18:43Speaker 4: the system was two stage, so the hotel alarms never
- 18:47Speaker 4: sounded and the guests weren't evacuated, So I guess that's good.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Though plenty of the people asked about the fire trucks
- 18:54Speaker 4: the next morning. I didn't fire him, and in fact
- 18:57Speaker 4: he stayed for years and eventually became director of security.
- 19:00Speaker 4: But from that, from that night on, I learned to
- 19:03Speaker 4: I learned a very important lesson. When you're training someone,
- 19:06Speaker 4: never communicate with nods and near a fire alarm.
- 19:09Speaker 2: I was just about to say, like, I wouldn't even
- 19:11Speaker 2: call it a bad heart. That's just bad on your part.
- 19:17Speaker 1: You guys reached it towards it.
- 19:19Speaker 2: He's like, I'm sure the other guy was kind of
- 19:22Speaker 2: he's like, is he really telling me to pull the alarm?
- 19:25Speaker 2: I really confused right now. But also he probably should
- 19:27Speaker 2: have spoke up and said, do you want me to
- 19:29Speaker 2: pull this or no?
- 19:30Speaker 1: But I mean whatever, you gotta be careful. Two stoic
- 19:33Speaker 1: dudes that are that's.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Up your life, you know, just smiling life.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Yeah, imagine you're the people inside too, they're like it.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Fortunately it didn't like go off through the whole building.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Oh yeah, but you know, you're laying in bed and
- 19:48Speaker 1: you look down there's just, you know, five fire trucks
- 19:50Speaker 1: down below your.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Building running ready, Like, don't worry, guys, it's not even drill.
- 19:57Speaker 2: It was just it's not it's just it's literally just
- 19:59Speaker 2: an accident.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Yes, I don't know, probably get that would probably get
- 20:03Speaker 1: me up. That's funny. It's a good story on training.
