- 0:11Speaker 1: It's on the Thursday of a Texas OU week.
- 0:27Speaker 2: And we're glad to have you with us. here on
- 0:29Speaker 2: this Thursday afternoon.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM 1300
- 0:33Speaker 1: The Zone.
- 0:34Speaker 2: My name is Craig Way. Glad to have you.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Alongside and alongside the producer, Jake Herman. We're with you
- 0:40Speaker 1: each and every weekday afternoon, Monday through Friday from 2
- 0:43Speaker 1: to 5 p.m. Now tomorrow, because this is Texas OU week,
- 0:48Speaker 1: we have a little bit different type of presentation for you.
- 0:51Speaker 1: We'll have the show for you, but it'll be coming
- 0:54Speaker 1: your way from Dallas like we do every year the
- 0:56Speaker 1: day before Texas OU. We'll be at Bar W on
- 1:00Speaker 1: Maple Avenue in Dallas. This has turned out to be
- 1:03Speaker 1: a wonderful spot for us to do the show the
- 1:06Speaker 1: day before Texas OU. You know, in the early part
- 1:10Speaker 1: of this century, the early 2000s, we used to do
- 1:14Speaker 1: the show from the hop route down in the West End.
- 1:17Speaker 1: And it was great, a lot of foot traffic and
- 1:19Speaker 1: a lot of, you know, stuff going on, give and
- 1:21Speaker 1: take between fans and things like that.
- 1:23Speaker 2: When that died off.
- 1:24Speaker 1: In that area and the businesses in that area, It
- 1:27Speaker 1: was a matter of where should we be? And we
- 1:30Speaker 1: tried into different places, but we landed on this a
- 1:32Speaker 1: couple of years ago.
- 1:33Speaker 2: And credit my card ball heart.
- 1:35Speaker 1: He had a lot to do with this, knowing the
- 1:38Speaker 1: owners and management there at Bar W on Maple. And
- 1:41Speaker 1: as a person who lived in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex
- 1:44Speaker 1: for more than 20 years, Yeah, I grew up in
- 1:47Speaker 1: North Carolina, but I've spent most of my life in
- 1:49Speaker 1: the state of Texas. I moved out here when I
- 1:52Speaker 1: was 18 and, like I said, spent basically 20 years
- 1:57Speaker 1: in the Metroplex. Went to college in North Texas and
- 1:59Speaker 1: also North Lake College in Irving to get some basics
- 2:01Speaker 1: out of the way at the JUCO level. But, and
- 2:04Speaker 1: worked in radio and television in Dallas for the better
- 2:08Speaker 1: part of some 15 years. and while it was going on,
- 2:13Speaker 1: I got to know the city really well, a lot
- 2:15Speaker 1: of places, and one of the areas that was really
- 2:16Speaker 1: cool was that uptown area that's near, and if you've
- 2:21Speaker 1: been up there, you know what I'm talking about, where
- 2:24Speaker 1: Maple and Ruth and Cedar Springs and Oak Lawn and
- 2:27Speaker 1: all that area is up in there, and included in
- 2:30Speaker 1: that on Maple Avenue, there was a long time, a
- 2:34Speaker 1: long hotel forever called the Stone League, and then across
- 2:37Speaker 1: the street, the or next to, was the Stonely P.
- 2:40Speaker 2: It was a bar.
- 2:41Speaker 1: And it was a really hip, cool bar. Well, that
- 2:44Speaker 1: eventually went away. But Bar W is in that space now.
- 2:48Speaker 1: And it's a great location. And a lot of Texas
- 2:51Speaker 1: and Oklahoma fans show up there. It's a really good
- 2:54Speaker 1: vibe and a good atmosphere. So what we have is
- 2:55Speaker 1: a five-hour Texas OU preview program for you tomorrow. I'll
- 2:59Speaker 1: be out there. Mike Hardball-Hards will be out there. Mark
- 3:02Speaker 1: Henry will be there.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Also.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Cameron Parker will be out there with us. Bucky and
- 3:10Speaker 1: BK will be there with us. Our friend Babe Laufenberg
- 3:14Speaker 1: from the Cowboys Radio Network will actually stop by. He
- 3:17Speaker 1: lives kind of in the vicinity. Of course, he's busy
- 3:19Speaker 1: tonight because the Cowboys are playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 3:22Speaker 2: And you can hear that game on 98.1 FM KVET.
- 3:25Speaker 1: So place to be tomorrow, the day before Texas OU,
- 3:29Speaker 1: is Bar W on Maple Avenue, and that's where we
- 3:31Speaker 1: will bring you the program. Quarterbacking it all back here,
- 3:34Speaker 1: keeping it between the lines and within the framework of
- 3:39Speaker 1: the guardrails, is the producer, Jake Herman. You did a
- 3:43Speaker 1: lot of good baseball watching in last night, did you?
- 3:45Speaker 3: Well, a lot of good listening on my way up
- 3:48Speaker 3: to Southwestern. And then I got home in time. That's right,
- 3:51Speaker 3: you had volleyball last night. I did at Foresetter, Southwestern
- 3:54Speaker 3: Victorious over Concordia University, Texas.
- 3:57Speaker 4: So nicely done there by the Pirates.
- 3:59Speaker 3: But got home, fired on the television, got to see
- 4:04Speaker 3: the ending of Yankees Rays. I was able to walk
- 4:07Speaker 3: in the door just in time to see that controversial
- 4:10Speaker 3: replay review. on Anthony Volpe's would-be home run. I couldn't
- 4:15Speaker 3: help but think, when will Yankee fans learn to stop
- 4:18Speaker 3: reaching over the wall?
- 4:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I started to say, for those of us OGs,
- 4:22Speaker 1: the images of Jeffrey Mayer in 1996.
- 4:24Speaker 4: And last year in the World Series.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Yeah, happened in the World Series. Well, two years ago
- 4:28Speaker 1: it would have been.
- 4:29Speaker 2: That's right. In the World Series.
- 4:31Speaker 1: But the original one to do that was 12-year-old Jeffrey
- 4:35Speaker 1: Mayer some 30 years ago in 1996. And I can
- 4:40Speaker 1: still see Roberto Alomar at the ball going wild. And
- 4:44Speaker 1: they gave Derek Jeter a home run on that deal
- 4:45Speaker 1: before they changed the rule.
- 4:47Speaker 2: So you got a chance to see that.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Saw that and then saw the poetry in motion that
- 4:52Speaker 3: was the Brewers-Padres series. I wish the series never ended,
- 4:55Speaker 3: but we do have the NLCS matchup that I wanted
- 4:59Speaker 3: before the playoffs. And that is the mighty back-to-back champion
- 5:02Speaker 3: Dodgers against the team with the best record in baseball,
- 5:04Speaker 3: the Brewers.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Yeah, that I think is definitely going to be the
- 5:09Speaker 1: biggest challenge for the Dodgers. getting past Milwaukee, the team
- 5:14Speaker 1: with the best record, and played like it. And they
- 5:18Speaker 1: play such a great brand of baseball as well. Having
- 5:20Speaker 1: said that, the Dodgers went all the way through that
- 5:23Speaker 1: NLDS series with Atlanta without committing an error. They played
- 5:26Speaker 1: very clean baseball as well, even though they struggled to
- 5:29Speaker 1: hit with runners. scoring position. The last time they had one, though,
- 5:32Speaker 1: it worked out. Andy Pius with the two-run single. Otherwise,
- 5:35Speaker 1: they were 0-14 before that. We'll hear that highlight a
- 5:38Speaker 1: little later on. I thought that Atlanta, I mean, look,
- 5:41Speaker 1: it's one of those situations, right? You're playing the Dodgers.
- 5:43Speaker 1: You got to play your best.
- 5:44Speaker 3: And I know the Braves were a team that did
- 5:47Speaker 3: the little things pretty well all year long under Walt Weiss.
- 5:50Speaker 3: That did not come through for them last night. The
- 5:53Speaker 3: drop pop-up, I didn't like the decision to pull Tyler Malley,
- 5:56Speaker 3: even though now we're playing, what, Thursday afternoon quarterback on this.
- 5:59Speaker 5: Right, right.
- 6:00Speaker 3: But I thought with 85 pitches, having only given up
- 6:02Speaker 3: the run on the error, you could have let him
- 6:04Speaker 3: keep going. I know what the numbers say. Your third
- 6:07Speaker 3: time through, I know what Robert Suarez brings. out of
- 6:09Speaker 3: that bullpen but that's a decision that i know walt
- 6:12Speaker 3: weiss who might well be one of the managers of
- 6:14Speaker 3: the year finalist is going to be kicking himself for.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Yeah and then and then on top of this just
- 6:20Speaker 1: it didn't hit it didn't hit.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Enough my braves fan friend brett loftus who's actually in
- 6:24Speaker 3: dc this week with the banana bowl he said that
- 6:27Speaker 3: you can't win a playoff series doesn't matter who you're
- 6:29Speaker 3: playing if your batting average starts with.
- 6:31Speaker 1: A one yeah um i think i saw uh what's
- 6:35Speaker 1: that Twitter site, Braves Cold Takes or something like that,
- 6:39Speaker 1: that said, what do Austin Riley, Stonewall Jackson, and Jesus
- 6:43Speaker 1: have in common?
- 6:45Speaker 2: They all had zero hits in the NLDS. Oh, ruthless. Yeah,
- 6:50Speaker 2: that's what I'm saying. So, yeah.
- 6:52Speaker 1: So did that guy on Twitter, by the way. Yeah, right, exactly.
- 6:56Speaker 1: And so, yeah, it's... It was tough. It was tough.
- 7:01Speaker 1: And really and truly the ones that have struggled mightily also,
- 7:06Speaker 1: you think about it, Ronald Acuna Jr. I think I
- 7:09Speaker 1: heard when I was driving in this morning, I heard
- 7:13Speaker 1: Colin Cowherd say that for all the yammering a lot
- 7:17Speaker 1: of folks do about the Dodgers payroll and all.
- 7:19Speaker 2: This, it was an $ 800, 000 guy who.
- 7:24Speaker 1: That Andy Pahez, who got what proved to be the
- 7:27Speaker 1: game-winning hit, Pahez and Kike Hernandez, and the two guys
- 7:31Speaker 1: for the Braves, Acuna and Albies, I guess it was,
- 7:37Speaker 1: combined for $ 59 million on their payroll. And that's cheap
- 7:41Speaker 1: for star power in today's MLB. Yeah, I think they're
- 7:44Speaker 1: sixth overall in payroll, Atlanta. But they just didn't get
- 7:47Speaker 1: enough production, not enough offensive production to make a big difference.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Ultimately, the pitching would give out.
- 7:52Speaker 3: And in the American League, should the Dodgers win the pennant,
- 7:57Speaker 3: they will await one of the teams with the bottom
- 8:00Speaker 3: four payrolls in the league. Yankees are done. You got
- 8:06Speaker 3: the Rays, Guardians, and White Sox, 26th, 27th, 29th.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 8:11Speaker 1: And which I think is further credence to when people
- 8:15Speaker 1: say it's all about the payroll.
- 8:16Speaker 2: It's not all about the payroll.
- 8:17Speaker 1: No, sir.
- 8:18Speaker 2: And when you see some of the others.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Toward that end, coming up in a few minutes, we're
- 8:21Speaker 1: going to visit with Gene Watson, our good friend, our
- 8:23Speaker 1: MLB insider from the Chicago White Sox front office. He's
- 8:27Speaker 1: in the Windy City, obviously game four tonight. Between the
- 8:30Speaker 1: Sox and the Cleveland Guardians, the one remaining ALDS series
- 8:35Speaker 1: to get completed before they move on to the league
- 8:38Speaker 1: championship series. The winner to take on the one seed
- 8:41Speaker 1: out of the American League, the Milwaukee Brewers. Excuse me,
- 8:44Speaker 1: the Tampa Bay Rays. Before we get to the break, today,
- 8:48Speaker 1: of course, and there's plenty of football to discuss, Texas
- 8:51Speaker 1: OU style. Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian at his weekly
- 8:55Speaker 1: Thursday media Zoom. Give you a little taste of it
- 8:57Speaker 1: now and some more of it as the show progresses.
- 8:59Speaker 1: His opening comments from this morning's media Zoom.
- 9:02Speaker 6: First and foremost, before we get started, I just want
- 9:04Speaker 6: to give a shout out. Congratulations to Coach Mack Brown
- 9:09Speaker 6: on his induction into the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame.
- 9:12Speaker 6: You know, he's obviously had a tremendous career. I've done
- 9:15Speaker 6: so many great things here on the 40 acres. And
- 9:18Speaker 6: so him getting honored, you know, kind of fitting with
- 9:21Speaker 6: us playing in the cotton bowl here against OU is
- 9:24Speaker 6: a pretty fitting and well-deserved for him. From, from our
- 9:28Speaker 6: team's perspective, man, I'm really proud of the guys. I
- 9:31Speaker 6: thought they'd done a tremendous job this week of, you know,
- 9:35Speaker 6: really minimizing the distractions and staying focused on the task
- 9:39Speaker 6: at hand. We had really good week of work from
- 9:42Speaker 6: a practice perspective. And, I think that they've been very
- 9:46Speaker 6: intentional and detailed in their approach, but yet it was
- 9:49Speaker 6: a hard physical week, which is needed because this is
- 9:52Speaker 6: going to be a hard physical game. So this is
- 9:55Speaker 6: a heck of a game. We're obviously looking forward to it.
- 9:58Speaker 6: We know we're going to get... all that OU's got.
- 10:02Speaker 6: They're a very good team. I know that, you know,
- 10:05Speaker 6: they'll be ready to play and it's important that we're
- 10:07Speaker 6: ready to play as well.
- 10:08Speaker 2: All right.
- 10:09Speaker 1: We'll hear more from Sark during the course of the day.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Later this hour, we have inconceivable and inconceivable.
- 10:18Speaker 2: On the day before we leave for OU is always
- 10:21Speaker 2: one specific thing. State Fair food.
- 10:24Speaker 6: Mmm.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Looks like I picked a bad day to eat lunch early.
- 10:27Speaker 3: I'm getting hungry again.
- 10:29Speaker 1: We're going to run down all of the State Fair
- 10:31Speaker 1: food options for you on that. In the 3 o'clock
- 10:36Speaker 1: hour and the 4 o'clock hour, I'll give you a
- 10:38Speaker 1: little sneak preview of tonight's Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark.
- 10:43Speaker 1: In the 3 o'clock hour, just an overview of the
- 10:46Speaker 1: team going into.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Texas OU weekend.
- 10:48Speaker 1: 4 o'clock hour, dialing on some specifics on this matchup
- 10:52Speaker 1: with Oklahoma.
- 10:54Speaker 2: But up next.
- 10:55Speaker 1: We talk playoff baseball with Gene Watson, our MLB insider,
- 10:58Speaker 1: on 13 Under the Zone. So here we are coming
- 11:04Speaker 1: up on the second weekend in October. We know what
- 11:09Speaker 1: that means on the second Saturday in October in Dallas,
- 11:13Speaker 1: Texas OU weekend. We'll get back to that and hear
- 11:15Speaker 1: more from Sark later on. But also, that second weekend
- 11:18Speaker 1: in October means that we're going to be wrapping up
- 11:21Speaker 1: division play. in the division series. Three of the four
- 11:26Speaker 1: have been completed now in the National League. The one
- 11:29Speaker 1: seed Milwaukee Brewers defeated the San Diego Padres in four games.
- 11:33Speaker 1: The two seed Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Atlanta Braves
- 11:36Speaker 1: in four games. And in the American League, the top
- 11:39Speaker 1: seed there, the Tampa Bay Rays, swept the New York Yankees,
- 11:43Speaker 1: finishing off the Yanks last night. There is one series
- 11:46Speaker 1: left to be contested, and it'll be game four tonight
- 11:49Speaker 1: against in Chicago between the White Sox, the number six seed,
- 11:54Speaker 1: and their division rivals, the Cleveland Guardians, who were the
- 11:58Speaker 1: two seed, even though Chicago won the regular season series
- 12:01Speaker 1: between the two. It's been marvelous so far through the
- 12:03Speaker 1: three games. The Sox are up two games to one.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Our MLB insider from the Chicago White Sox front office
- 12:10Speaker 1: is none other than our good friend Gene Watson, who
- 12:12Speaker 1: joins us from the Windy City. How excited is the
- 12:16Speaker 1: Windy City, Geno, going into tonight's game?
- 12:20Speaker 7: It's so bizarre.
- 12:21Speaker 8: We are actually staying across the street from Wrigley Field
- 12:26Speaker 8: at the Zachary Hotel because there are no games at
- 12:29Speaker 8: Wrigley Field. And this hotel is unbelievable. And with everything
- 12:34Speaker 8: going on in the city of Chicago right now, it
- 12:36Speaker 8: was the.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Most available hotel.
- 12:38Speaker 8: So being in Wrigleyville and then heading south down to
- 12:42Speaker 8: Rayfield is kind of unique. But last night was about
- 12:46Speaker 8: as wild. Yesterday was about as wild a scene as
- 12:48Speaker 8: I've ever seen. At a playoff game with a blackout
- 12:51Speaker 8: game and the energy, them not having had a playoff
- 12:54Speaker 8: game in forever here. So it was a really cool
- 12:58Speaker 8: scene and we're looking forward to doing it again tonight.
- 13:00Speaker 1: I think I know the answer to this question, but
- 13:02Speaker 1: I'll ask it anyway. I think back to when you
- 13:05Speaker 1: first accepted the job to go into the front office
- 13:08Speaker 1: with the White Sox coming over from the Angels. going
- 13:11Speaker 1: on two years ago, and they were coming off 121 losses.
- 13:16Speaker 1: And I remember asking you about it. You talked about
- 13:20Speaker 1: the rebuild that you said you thought it would not
- 13:22Speaker 1: be as difficult to rebuild as what you had to
- 13:24Speaker 1: do in Kansas City, which was to build that and
- 13:25Speaker 1: the two pennant winners and world champion.
- 13:27Speaker 2: But my question is this, if when you.
- 13:30Speaker 1: First took that job, somebody said, if you take this job,
- 13:36Speaker 1: Within two years, the White Sox will be one win
- 13:38Speaker 1: away from advancing to the final four of Major League Baseball,
- 13:41Speaker 1: the ALCS.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Would you have signed on for that by itself?
- 13:47Speaker 8: Well, first of all, I wouldn't have believed it, but yeah, 100%.
- 13:50Speaker 2: It's a.
- 13:52Speaker 4: Testimony to.
- 13:55Speaker 8: Our front office and the backgrounds of each and the
- 13:58Speaker 8: strengths of each individual in the front office, the track
- 14:02Speaker 8: record that each of them have coming from winning organizations
- 14:06Speaker 8: and just being selfless and pouring into each other and
- 14:09Speaker 8: identifying the types of players that embody what we want
- 14:13Speaker 8: the Chicago White Sox to be about.
- 14:16Speaker 6: It's been so much fun.
- 14:17Speaker 8: We're a year ahead of schedule. I actually sat with
- 14:21Speaker 8: Jerry Reinsdorf last night and as disappointed as he was
- 14:26Speaker 8: in the way we played yesterday, one of the things
- 14:29Speaker 8: that we talked about is how much we have looked
- 14:32Speaker 8: forward to going into next season. And so you keep
- 14:36Speaker 8: your eye on the prize. We win a game tonight.
- 14:38Speaker 8: We get to keep playing, and that's the goal. But
- 14:41Speaker 8: it is really exciting to see what we've built here
- 14:43Speaker 8: in such.
- 14:43Speaker 6: A short time.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Gino, I know it was more than just this one
- 14:47Speaker 1: thing that I'm going to bring up, but I am
- 14:49Speaker 1: interested in getting your thoughts on this. With the way
- 14:53Speaker 1: the White Sox pitched and the way the White Sox
- 14:55Speaker 1: hit and fielded in the first two ballgames, it looked stellar.
- 15:00Speaker 1: The other thing they did that I thought, and I
- 15:02Speaker 1: remember you mentioning it, is this is a key going
- 15:05Speaker 1: into the series, is how... they would pitch to and
- 15:09Speaker 1: be able to play and deal with Jose Ramirez. Well,
- 15:13Speaker 1: going into game three, he was 0 for 6 in
- 15:15Speaker 1: the series, and then he went out and went 2
- 15:19Speaker 1: for 4 yesterday, a double, a triple, two RBIs, two
- 15:21Speaker 1: runs scored, stolen base. He kind of looked like the
- 15:24Speaker 1: Jose Ramirez everybody knows and has seen all season long.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Kind of hard to keep a good man down, isn't it?
- 15:30Speaker 4: No question.
- 15:30Speaker 8: He's the one guy you don't want to let beat you,
- 15:33Speaker 8: but I think there were two things from yesterday's game.
- 15:36Speaker 8: our young kids had never played in their lives in
- 15:40Speaker 8: that type of environment. And I think that was a
- 15:43Speaker 8: factor in the, in the, the way that they approach
- 15:47Speaker 8: the game a little bit. And Jose Ramirez, it just
- 15:50Speaker 8: amped him up. It, I mean, he's hollering at our
- 15:53Speaker 8: fans and in the stands and the dugout and getting
- 15:55Speaker 8: his teammates amped up. So it was like a wake
- 15:58Speaker 8: up call for him. Like, Hey, wait a minute.
- 16:00Speaker 2: This is October.
- 16:01Speaker 4: I know what this is.
- 16:02Speaker 8: And, So I think it was kind of two sides
- 16:05Speaker 8: of the spectrum with that yesterday. And then our, our
- 16:08Speaker 8: kids will do a better job today of slowing the
- 16:10Speaker 8: game down. And again, I've never seen a crowd like
- 16:14Speaker 8: I saw yesterday. And for a guy like Jose Ramirez, that's,
- 16:18Speaker 8: That's your motivation to show everybody on the biggest stage
- 16:22Speaker 8: who the best player is, and he is one of
- 16:24Speaker 8: the best in baseball.
- 16:25Speaker 2: No doubt about that.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Gene Watson with us, joining us here on 1300 The Zone.
- 16:28Speaker 1: You mentioned the crowd. You mentioned the environment. The White
- 16:30Speaker 1: Sox are trying to win a home postseason game for
- 16:33Speaker 1: the first time since 1906, or at least a clinch,
- 16:38Speaker 1: a series. at home win a postseason series at home
- 16:41Speaker 1: for the first time since the crosstown rivalry matchup with
- 16:44Speaker 1: the cubs in 1906 how much has that been talked
- 16:47Speaker 1: about up there do you know the fact that the
- 16:49Speaker 1: white socks have not been able to clinch a series
- 16:52Speaker 1: of course when they swept the astros 21 years ago
- 16:56Speaker 1: to win the World Series. They finished that on the road.
- 16:59Speaker 1: They had a chance to win it in 59, lost
- 17:02Speaker 1: it home to the Dodgers in that year. So it
- 17:04Speaker 1: goes way on back all the way to 1906, the
- 17:07Speaker 1: last time they had a chance to win a series
- 17:11Speaker 1: at home. How much would that mean to the city
- 17:14Speaker 1: of Chicago and to the White Sox nation overall?
- 17:17Speaker 8: You know, it's an organization of very rich history and
- 17:21Speaker 8: great players. And, you know, walking down the hallway in
- 17:24Speaker 8: our offices yesterday, there's Ron Kittle, there's Jim Tomey, there's
- 17:29Speaker 8: Harold Baines, Bo Jackson, Frank Thomas. And so it's an
- 17:34Speaker 8: organization with very rich history. I think the South side
- 17:39Speaker 8: is just super excited that, that the White Sox are
- 17:42Speaker 8: playing in the Cubs or not. And that has been
- 17:45Speaker 8: the big talk because I mean, of all the things
- 17:47Speaker 8: we've talked about, if you would have said in April,
- 17:50Speaker 8: the White Sox would still be playing in the playoffs.
- 17:52Speaker 8: and the Cubs would not, I think you could have
- 17:55Speaker 8: gotten a lot of takers on that bet. But that's
- 17:59Speaker 8: been more of the topic, more than the winning a
- 18:02Speaker 8: home playoff series, is that we're still playing and the
- 18:06Speaker 8: Cubs are not.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Jeez, Gino, I thought you were going to be old
- 18:09Speaker 1: school like me and talk about walking down the halls.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I thought you were going to mention Louie Aparicio and
- 18:14Speaker 1: Nellie Fox and early win Ted Kluszewski, all of those guys, right?
- 18:18Speaker 8: Yeah, it is very unique. I mean, You come around
- 18:23Speaker 8: the corner, and Harold Baines is just standing there.
- 18:25Speaker 2: You're like, hey, Harold.
- 18:25Speaker 8: Then you make another corner, and there's Jim Tobey. And
- 18:28Speaker 8: you're like, hey, what's going on? It's a very, very
- 18:31Speaker 8: unique environment here in Chicago.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Let's talk about the pitching here. Parker Messick will go
- 18:37Speaker 1: for the Guardians tonight. Hagan Smith, scheduled to start. Now,
- 18:42Speaker 1: at times, it has looked like sheer mastery. for Will
- 18:46Speaker 1: Venable in terms of the way that he has been
- 18:48Speaker 1: able to manage it the regular common question among baseball
- 18:53Speaker 1: fans is is continuous bullpen games is it sustainable in
- 19:00Speaker 1: the postseason but it looks like he's picked his spots
- 19:03Speaker 1: well when he's gone with one guy and then had
- 19:04Speaker 1: to switch to another even swapping out.
- 19:07Speaker 8: In the first inning yesterday Yeah, and you have leverage
- 19:11Speaker 8: and non-leverage in a game. And you have leverage and
- 19:13Speaker 8: non-leverage in a series. And a 2-0 lead in a
- 19:16Speaker 8: series is non-leverage. And so what you want to try
- 19:19Speaker 8: to do is score runs and use as many arms
- 19:22Speaker 8: as you can that are outside of your in-game leverage arms.
- 19:25Speaker 8: And so, you know, Hagen threw two-thirds of an inning yesterday.
- 19:29Speaker 6: He'll be the opener of the day.
- 19:30Speaker 8: The hopes, what I call the pathway to victory would
- 19:33Speaker 8: be Hagan Smith for three, Jordan Hicks, University of Houston
- 19:39Speaker 8: product for two, and then Grant Taylor for four or
- 19:42Speaker 8: five to close it out. So that's your pathway to victory.
- 19:45Speaker 2: If things are going well.
- 19:46Speaker 8: But, you know, anytime you've got 13 arms on a staff.
- 19:49Speaker 5: And you're using.
- 19:50Speaker 8: them a lot, there's no way they're all going to
- 19:52Speaker 8: be good every time they go out. You're going to
- 19:54Speaker 8: have you're going to have some pitfalls. And so what
- 19:56Speaker 8: you're hoping is that your offense can score some runs.
- 19:59Speaker 8: We had a couple of opportunities yesterday where we could have,
- 20:02Speaker 8: you know, taken the lead or gotten back into the game.
- 20:04Speaker 8: We played extremely poorly defensively. And so you just, you
- 20:08Speaker 8: flush it and you look at it like they scored nine.
- 20:11Speaker 8: They typically don't score nine and we got our best
- 20:13Speaker 8: arms going today. Our offense will be a little more,
- 20:17Speaker 8: you know, settled in with the crowd. And so you
- 20:20Speaker 8: just hope for good things to happen today.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Our MLB insider Gene Watson joining us for a few
- 20:23Speaker 1: more minutes here on 1300 Design. Let's jump to the
- 20:25Speaker 1: other series that are now in the books. Now, first
- 20:28Speaker 1: of all, the other in the AL. Obviously, if the
- 20:31Speaker 1: White Sox finish this thing up tonight or if they
- 20:35Speaker 1: win game five in Cleveland, it's on Thursday.
- 20:37Speaker 2: To St.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Pete. It's on the Tropicana Field to take on the
- 20:41Speaker 1: Tampa Bay Rays. From day one, Gino, you said Tampa
- 20:43Speaker 1: Bay was as good as anybody, if not the best,
- 20:47Speaker 1: in the American League. They had the best record in
- 20:49Speaker 1: the American League, and it was, look, methodical and quite impressive,
- 20:53Speaker 1: I thought, what they did in sweeping out the Yankees.
- 20:56Speaker 8: They're just so good. They're just such a great unit together.
- 21:00Speaker 8: They've got so much depth. They play to the scoreboard.
- 21:04Speaker 8: They're very, very much like Milwaukee. They're very, very fundamentally sound.
- 21:08Speaker 8: They love to play with each other. They are loose
- 21:11Speaker 8: on the field. And, and they just, they know who
- 21:14Speaker 8: they are as an organization and a major league club.
- 21:16Speaker 8: And that's what makes them very, very dangerous is, you know,
- 21:20Speaker 8: they just play loose. They play to the scoreboard. They
- 21:23Speaker 8: bunt more than anybody. They put the game in motion
- 21:26Speaker 8: as well as anybody they defend well. And that's ultimately what,
- 21:29Speaker 8: was the demise of the New York Yankees or were
- 21:32Speaker 8: those little things, those little bitty fundamental issues that happened
- 21:35Speaker 8: in a game. And so whoever gets Tampa is going
- 21:38Speaker 8: to have a tough challenge. I love the fact that
- 21:40Speaker 8: it will be seven games instead of five, because you
- 21:43Speaker 8: can kind of play on your depth and pitching versus
- 21:46Speaker 8: their depth and pitching, but you have to do everything
- 21:49Speaker 8: right to beat the Tampa Bay Rays.
- 21:50Speaker 6: You got to play.
- 21:52Speaker 8: Very sound fundamental baseball. And if you get a Milwaukee
- 21:57Speaker 8: Tampa Bay World Series, you're getting two of the most
- 22:00Speaker 8: fundamentally sound baseball teams with great managers that do the,
- 22:05Speaker 8: it'll be old school baseball if you get those two
- 22:08Speaker 8: teams in the World Series.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Interesting you bring that up. Yesterday, we had Mason Montgomery,
- 22:13Speaker 1: the Pirates closer on from Leander, of course, the left-hander.
- 22:17Speaker 1: And he had played flag football with my son, Jason.
- 22:21Speaker 1: And Mason was talking about those two teams in almost
- 22:24Speaker 1: the same exact wordage that you talked about, Milwaukee and
- 22:28Speaker 1: Tampa Bay. I heard somebody talk about Tampa Bay as
- 22:31Speaker 1: being Milwaukee-lite. Now, that sounds like a Pilsner beer to me,
- 22:35Speaker 1: but the two teams are close enough as we jump
- 22:40Speaker 1: to the National League, and let's start with the Brewers
- 22:42Speaker 1: since they're the number one overall seed, and how fundamentally
- 22:46Speaker 1: they were and had to be to fight off one
- 22:49Speaker 1: of the hottest teams in San Diego to win that series.
- 22:53Speaker 8: Yeah, and it begins and ends with their manager, Pat Murphy.
- 22:56Speaker 8: And they've got a bell cow starter, Jacob Mizorowski. And
- 23:00Speaker 8: they just do all of the little things it takes
- 23:03Speaker 8: to win a game. And they are, again, old school.
- 23:07Speaker 8: They're early 80s. baseball and they they don't apologize for
- 23:11Speaker 8: it and and what they did to beat san diego
- 23:14Speaker 8: uh in the manner which they did it just speaks
- 23:17Speaker 8: to how very good of a roster that is they're
- 23:20Speaker 8: very very versatile they're athletic you saw what tyrone taylor
- 23:24Speaker 8: did i mean they they can beat you a lot
- 23:26Speaker 8: of different ways and so uh they're gonna be good
- 23:29Speaker 8: i would i've said all along i would expect.
- 23:31Speaker 6: Them to uh.
- 23:33Speaker 8: Game series to games six or seven to get to
- 23:36Speaker 8: the world series. And if they get in, they've got
- 23:38Speaker 8: a chance of winning it. It's a very, you know,
- 23:41Speaker 8: Pat Murphy, who was at Notre Dame when I was
- 23:44Speaker 8: at St. Edwards, when I see him now and I
- 23:48Speaker 8: point at him, he knows he'll just look at me
- 23:49Speaker 8: and goes, worst, worst loss of my career. We actually
- 23:52Speaker 8: upset Notre Dame when he was there. And so I
- 23:55Speaker 8: have a lot of fun with him, but it's just
- 23:57Speaker 8: a fun baseball team to watch. And, and if it
- 24:00Speaker 8: does get to Tampa and Milwaukee, it's going to be
- 24:03Speaker 8: great for baseball because in the world of baseball versus analytics,
- 24:07Speaker 8: you're going to have two teams that are very good analytically,
- 24:10Speaker 8: very good when it comes to scouting and player development. And, and,
- 24:14Speaker 8: I still think the Dodgers are kind of the frontrunner
- 24:18Speaker 8: with the depth of that rotation.
- 24:20Speaker 6: But we'll see.
- 24:21Speaker 4: It's going to be a great series.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Kevin Cash, the Tampa Bay Skippers, the longest-tenured current manager
- 24:27Speaker 1: in the Major Leagues, 12 years.
- 24:28Speaker 2: The one who was second. is Dave Roberts with 11.
- 24:32Speaker 1: And the Dodgers had to reach down for a lot
- 24:35Speaker 1: of inner reserve to find a way to beat that
- 24:38Speaker 1: Braves ball club that you.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Talked about was real good as well.
- 24:40Speaker 1: I know you've talked about the Dodgers have been the
- 24:42Speaker 1: team to beat, but Atlanta pushed them hard. I guess
- 24:45Speaker 1: ultimately the pitching made a difference, I guess, for LA
- 24:48Speaker 1: in holding Atlanta to single runs in games three and
- 24:51Speaker 1: four at Truist Park.
- 24:53Speaker 8: Yeah, you keep Michael Harris down, you keep Matt Olsen down,
- 24:56Speaker 8: you get Dubon down, and you have a chance to win.
- 24:58Speaker 8: And to me, that's clearly still the separator, is the
- 25:03Speaker 8: depth of their rotation. And as you go into a
- 25:06Speaker 8: seven-game series, when you get the games five, six, and seven,
- 25:10Speaker 8: and you can turn over your rotation, and then if
- 25:12Speaker 8: you have.
- 25:12Speaker 6: To, what you saw with Yamamoto.
- 25:15Speaker 8: Last year, using starters and leverage relief situations deeper in
- 25:19Speaker 8: the series, That advantage is always going to go to
- 25:22Speaker 8: the Dodgers. I think that they're going to have to
- 25:25Speaker 8: defend very well because Milwaukee's going to move runners and
- 25:30Speaker 8: hit behind runners and play small ball a little bit better.
- 25:33Speaker 8: They kind of rely a little bit more on the
- 25:34Speaker 8: home run. Andy Pah has got the big hit for
- 25:37Speaker 8: him yesterday, but... But again, to me, this game is
- 25:41Speaker 8: always going to be about starting pitching, being the currency
- 25:44Speaker 8: of the game, and the Dodgers have it. And they
- 25:47Speaker 8: don't just have it, it's experience. And so as you
- 25:50Speaker 8: get into a seven-game series, that's where the advantage for
- 25:53Speaker 8: me swings to the Dodgers a little bit more.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Gino, is there a better game one of a post-season
- 26:01Speaker 1: series matchup than Jacob Mizorowski against Tarek Skubal, which we'll
- 26:06Speaker 1: see on Sunday?
- 26:08Speaker 8: It's going to be unbelievable. Runs are going to be
- 26:12Speaker 8: at a premium. You've got to kind of hope to
- 26:15Speaker 8: get both of them early. You've got to be super aggressive,
- 26:18Speaker 8: and you can get scuba early sometimes. And so both
- 26:22Speaker 8: teams are going to have to, if you lay back
- 26:24Speaker 8: and you let them get ahead every at-bat, you're going
- 26:26Speaker 8: to be in trouble.
- 26:27Speaker 6: You're going to have to go up and.
- 26:29Speaker 8: Attack some fastballs early in the count and really do
- 26:31Speaker 8: a really good job. Whoever can jump out two or
- 26:37Speaker 8: three runs early, that game's going to.
- 26:39Speaker 6: Have a huge advantage.
- 26:40Speaker 8: But that'll be the first of at least two matchups
- 26:43Speaker 8: like that where it's going to be super exciting for baseball.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Final thing I want to ask your opinion on, Gino,
- 26:49Speaker 1: this came out today, that Major League Baseball, this speaks
- 26:52Speaker 1: to what you were talking about, about how excited you
- 26:55Speaker 1: would be for a seven-game series for the White Sox
- 26:59Speaker 1: to get in against Tampa Bay in a best-of-seven. The
- 27:02Speaker 1: Major League Baseball latest proposal to the Players Association has
- 27:08Speaker 1: included changes to the postseason that would revise the regular
- 27:13Speaker 1: season schedule to that old school number of 154 games,
- 27:16Speaker 1: which they had prior to 1961. And then a new
- 27:19Speaker 1: postseason structure that would allow the highest seeds in both
- 27:24Speaker 1: the wild card and division rounds to select their opponents
- 27:28Speaker 1: and the expansion of the division series from a best
- 27:31Speaker 1: of five to a best of seven.
- 27:33Speaker 2: What do you think about that?
- 27:34Speaker 9: I love it.
- 27:35Speaker 6: I think it's great.
- 27:36Speaker 8: I think it would add a lot of drama to
- 27:38Speaker 8: the series because in baseball, any team can beat any
- 27:42Speaker 8: other team any given day. And the one thing that
- 27:46Speaker 8: it would do is the teams that have to really,
- 27:48Speaker 8: really battle and use their pitching going into the first
- 27:53Speaker 8: round of the playoffs where you might look at it
- 27:55Speaker 8: on paper and go, well, wait a minute. Their first
- 27:58Speaker 8: two starters are better than our first two. We're going
- 28:01Speaker 8: to stay away from them.
- 28:01Speaker 10: But if they have to use them, and they're not.
- 28:04Speaker 8: Going to be available in game one or two, you
- 28:07Speaker 8: might take on a matchup that you wouldn't normally take
- 28:11Speaker 8: because of the way the pitching lines up. And so
- 28:13Speaker 8: I think it'd be fascinating. I don't love, you know,
- 28:16Speaker 8: how the matchups went this year. You know, we're playing Cleveland,
- 28:20Speaker 8: who we played a lot. The Tampa Yankee series is
- 28:23Speaker 8: unfortunate that that wasn't a seven-game series. But I do
- 28:27Speaker 8: think it would add a lot of a storyline and
- 28:30Speaker 8: interesting flavor to the playoffs if they do that.
- 28:32Speaker 2: You weren't. just now speeding, were you, Geno?
- 28:36Speaker 11: No, no, we're in Wrigleyville.
- 28:38Speaker 8: We're about to get on the bus and head to Rayfield,
- 28:41Speaker 8: so it's a little chaotic around here.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Hey, listen, best of luck to your ball club tonight.
- 28:46Speaker 1: We'll talk again next week. Regardless, hopefully we're talking about
- 28:49Speaker 1: your ball club against Tampa Bay and Dodgers Brewers as
- 28:54Speaker 1: well in the National League.
- 28:55Speaker 2: I appreciate the time, and enjoy it tonight, Geno.
- 28:58Speaker 8: Hey, need you to take care of business at the
- 29:00Speaker 8: Cotton Bowl Saturday. Hook them.
- 29:01Speaker 2: That's on the list. Hook them.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Thank you. That's Gene Watson, our MLB insider. Coming up,
- 29:08Speaker 1: speaking of the Cotton Bowl, State Fair Food Time. That's
- 29:11Speaker 1: our inconceivable on Texas OU Week. That's next on 13
- 29:14Speaker 1: Under the Zone.
- 29:18Speaker 11: Down the 1-2 pitch. Swung on.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Banged inside the bag at first.
- 29:24Speaker 11: Down the right field line to hit it toward the corner.
- 29:27Speaker 11: Kwon scores. Ramirez scores. De Lauder scores. Zedell on his
- 29:31Speaker 11: way to third. He'll throw the hit first slide. It's
- 29:34Speaker 11: a triple. His second triple in the series. And the
- 29:40Speaker 11: Guardians with a four-run third. Joe Adele shot it the
- 29:46Speaker 11: other way. Inside the bag at first. Down into that
- 29:51Speaker 11: right field corner. What a piece of hitting. And Cleveland
- 29:56Speaker 11: gets its biggest hit of the postseason here in 2026
- 30:01Speaker 11: and lead it 4-1. The White Sox will have to
- 30:06Speaker 11: try again tomorrow.
- 30:09Speaker 2: The Guardians survive.
- 30:12Speaker 11: And force a game four tomorrow night.
- 30:15Speaker 2: The 3-2.
- 30:16Speaker 7: Pahez, ground ball, base hit, left center field. Teoscar Hernandez scores.
- 30:22Speaker 10: Edmond behind him.
- 30:24Speaker 7: Andy Pahez breaks the tie with a clutch hit here
- 30:28Speaker 7: in the seventh.
- 30:29Speaker 10: Well, that's the hit that we were talking about. Maybe
- 30:31Speaker 10: one hit makes the difference. And I mentioned in the ballgame,
- 30:34Speaker 10: but Andy Pahez, the way he was swinging the bat,
- 30:37Speaker 10: he's got the confidence. A couple of hits in last night,
- 30:40Speaker 10: and you mentioned both of the baseballs that he hit
- 30:42Speaker 10: tonight before.
- 30:43Speaker 2: That event were hit hard.
- 30:45Speaker 10: Moved to count three and two, got a fastball, and
- 30:48Speaker 10: actually hit a knuckleball into the outfield.
- 30:51Speaker 2: They're a strike away.
- 30:52Speaker 5: The pitch.
- 30:54Speaker 7: Fly ball right field. Tucker drifts over. Makes the call
- 30:57Speaker 7: and the catch. That's a division series win for L.A.
- 31:04Speaker 7: The Los Angeles Dodgers eliminate the Atlanta Braves in four
- 31:09Speaker 7: games to move on to the NLCS.
- 31:13Speaker 9: Mesa high fly ball deep in the right center.
- 31:16Speaker 2: This is way back and goodbye.
- 31:21Speaker 6: Victor Mesa Jr.
- 31:23Speaker 9: A bomb into right center field. The Tampa Bay Rays
- 31:30Speaker 9: have snatched back the lead.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Chisholm takes off and a swing and a miss.
- 31:37Speaker 9: Baker strikes out Trent Gresham and the Tampa Bay Rays
- 31:43Speaker 9: are moving on.
- 31:45Speaker 2: They sweep the Yankees.
- 31:46Speaker 4: Here it is.
- 31:50Speaker 10: Fly ball center field.
- 31:52Speaker 7: Back is Mitchell at the warning track at the wall.
- 31:55Speaker 4: And he jumps and makes the catch.
- 31:58Speaker 9: He took a home run away from Manny Machado. And
- 32:01Speaker 9: the Brewers stay in front by two. It's a short
- 32:05Speaker 9: wall out there and straightaway center field.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Gary Mitchell got back there.
- 32:09Speaker 11: A little bunny hop.
- 32:10Speaker 7: But that ball, if he doesn't catch it, it gets
- 32:12Speaker 7: out and we're tied.
- 32:15Speaker 11: Garrett Mitchell, who has been responsible for two of the
- 32:18Speaker 11: three runs on offense, just took two runs off the board.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Into his stretch. Here's the 2-2. Struck him out, swinging
- 32:26Speaker 2: with a curveball.
- 32:27Speaker 9: The Brewers are headed to the NLCS for a second
- 32:30Speaker 9: straight year. They've got another date with.
- 32:33Speaker 2: The Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 32:35Speaker 9: A 3-1 final score, and the.
- 32:38Speaker 7: Brewers say goodnight to the San Diego Padres.
- 32:43Speaker 2: So there it is.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Baseball gets caught up. American League Division Series that is
- 32:49Speaker 1: still yet to be decided. The Chicago White Sox and
- 32:52Speaker 1: Cleveland Guardians after the Guardians won 9-3 Game 3 yesterday.
- 32:55Speaker 1: So Game 4 tonight at 7 o'clock. That's the only
- 32:58Speaker 1: Division Series. left to be contested. The Tampa Bay Rays
- 33:03Speaker 1: swept out the New York Yankees. Brian Anderson on the
- 33:06Speaker 1: call on that one, on the Victor Mesa Jr. home run.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Tom Hamilton, right, calling the Cleveland highlights. The Guardians!
- 33:14Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Cleveland!
- 33:17Speaker 1: And then Stephen Nelson on Dodgers radio with a call
- 33:21Speaker 1: along with the great Rick Monday on LA's 4-1 win
- 33:26Speaker 1: over The Atlanta Brace to win that series three games
- 33:29Speaker 1: to one. And Jeff Levering on the call for the
- 33:31Speaker 1: Milwaukee Brewers last night, finishing off the San Diego Padres.
- 33:35Speaker 2: We welcome you back.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Hour number two here on the program on Sports Radio
- 33:39Speaker 1: AM 1300 The Zone. We'll try to capture all of
- 33:43Speaker 1: it for you there. College football, pro football. We're going
- 33:45Speaker 1: to hear from Jerry Jones this hour. The Cowboys play
- 33:49Speaker 1: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tonight, which you could hear on
- 33:52Speaker 1: our sister station, 98.1 FM KVETS.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Coverage beginning at 6 to kick off at 7 o'clock.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Here on The Zone at 7 is Longhorn Weekly with
- 34:03Speaker 1: Coach Sark tonight at 7 o'clock. Special guest Lamar Houston was.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Such a big factor.
- 34:08Speaker 1: You know, we were talking about CB's favorite memories that
- 34:12Speaker 1: he mentioned three games.
- 34:13Speaker 2: I can give you a couple other ones.
- 34:14Speaker 1: 08 and 09. 08 was very special. The one where
- 34:19Speaker 1: Oklahoma came in number one and Texas was number five.
- 34:22Speaker 1: Sooners built a 14-3 lead. And then Jordan Shipley changed
- 34:27Speaker 1: everything with the 95-yard kickoff return. Longhorns outscored Oklahoma in
- 34:31Speaker 1: the fourth quarter, 15-0. They won that game 45-35. Lamar Houston,
- 34:37Speaker 1: a big part of that. And then Lamar the next
- 34:40Speaker 1: year when the Longhorns went in, it was a real grinder.
- 34:44Speaker 1: It was a rock fight. Texas won 16-13 there in
- 34:48Speaker 1: that one. That was in 2009. So there was those
- 34:51Speaker 1: as well. As always, we open up. The text lines
- 34:56Speaker 1: for you, we heard from CB, where you can reach
- 35:00Speaker 1: us on that text line by texting the word Texas,
- 35:05Speaker 1: followed by your question or comment to 81530. Standard messaging
- 35:10Speaker 1: and data rates may apply. And then our man Greg
- 35:13Speaker 1: Powell said, I've been to two Texas-Oklahoma games. How about
- 35:17Speaker 1: 1976 and the 6-6 tie? Darrell Royals' final game, Texas-OU game.
- 35:24Speaker 2: As head coach.
- 35:25Speaker 1: It's when Barry Switzer, who at the time denied it,
- 35:29Speaker 1: later admitted it. They had guys spying on the Texas practices.
- 35:32Speaker 1: And the words that Coach Royal used to describe them were,
- 35:35Speaker 1: and I quote, sorry bastards was the way he described them.
- 35:40Speaker 1: That wound up being a 6-6 tie. Said he was
- 35:44Speaker 1: booed soundly by Oklahoma because of the spying scandal. Yeah, well, again,
- 35:49Speaker 1: Barry Switzer years later said, yeah, we did.
- 35:52Speaker 2: We did.
- 35:54Speaker 1: At the time, he denied it. 09, Colt against Bradford.
- 35:59Speaker 1: And again, that was another one of the... That was
- 36:02Speaker 1: the rock fight game, the 16-13 game. I say rock fight.
- 36:05Speaker 1: It was just a hard slugfest kind of game. It
- 36:09Speaker 1: was something else. Let's hear from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian.
- 36:13Speaker 1: And we'll hear from Sark talking about getting ready for
- 36:18Speaker 1: this matchup and talking about really.
- 36:23Speaker 1: The pride his team has taken in holding opponents out
- 36:27Speaker 1: of the end zone in the recent Texas OU games.
- 36:31Speaker 6: Well, I mean, I think that's the goal, right? Defensively,
- 36:33Speaker 6: your job is to protect your end zone and not
- 36:37Speaker 6: let them score. And on top of that, man, you
- 36:39Speaker 6: want to stop the run. You want to defend the pass.
- 36:42Speaker 6: You want to affect the quarterback. You want to create turnovers.
- 36:44Speaker 6: All those things add up to that. But I think
- 36:47Speaker 6: ultimately the goal is to keep them out of the
- 36:49Speaker 6: end zone. And people are going to hit plays. And
- 36:51Speaker 6: then when you get into the red area, how do
- 36:54Speaker 6: you play great red zone defense? And to keep them
- 36:57Speaker 6: out of the end zone and force field goals or
- 36:59Speaker 6: fourth down tries. And our guys take a lot of
- 37:02Speaker 6: pride in that. That starts at the top with Coach Muschamp.
- 37:06Speaker 6: And then it bleeds itself into the assistant coaches and
- 37:09Speaker 6: then the leaders on that defense and then everybody else
- 37:11Speaker 6: kind of follows suit. So, you know, again, great defenses
- 37:14Speaker 6: take pride in that and ours is no different.
- 37:17Speaker 4: Okay.
- 37:17Speaker 2: All right.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Next up, Sarg asked, and this is from the media
- 37:21Speaker 1: zoom this morning, his final statement. local and even national,
- 37:25Speaker 1: those who are on the Zoom, media opportunity to visit
- 37:29Speaker 1: with him prior to when he does the one-on-one with me,
- 37:32Speaker 1: about an hour and 45 minutes prior to kick. And then,
- 37:35Speaker 1: of course, we have that as part of our pregame.
- 37:38Speaker 1: It's the last thing to happen before the game starts.
- 37:42Speaker 1: So we recorded about an hour and 45 minutes out.
- 37:45Speaker 1: And then after we record the interview, we run it
- 37:49Speaker 1: during our pregame right before kickoff. But with all the
- 37:53Speaker 1: other media, the last media available opportunity is this media
- 37:57Speaker 1: Zoom that he does on Thursday morning. So that's what
- 37:59Speaker 1: this is from. He was asked about the tight end room.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Is he happy with the production? Does he want to
- 38:05Speaker 1: see a little more out of it?
- 38:06Speaker 6: I think that we've got a really versatile room. When
- 38:09Speaker 6: you talk about Spencer and Michael to go along with
- 38:13Speaker 6: Nick and Amari, And the combinations, the different combinations that
- 38:17Speaker 6: we can put out there to run and do different things.
- 38:20Speaker 6: And so I think all those guys... maybe lacked a
- 38:25Speaker 6: little experience, especially playing for us from Michael's perspective. But
- 38:30Speaker 6: I'm watching these guys grow and improve and get better.
- 38:33Speaker 6: And they're not perfect, like nobody on offense is right now.
- 38:35Speaker 6: Nobody on our team is. But I think they're working
- 38:37Speaker 6: at their craft. And to your point, there's a lot
- 38:42Speaker 6: of versatility. And it's not always– I think production, we
- 38:45Speaker 6: always want to think, did the ball get thrown to them?
- 38:48Speaker 6: But are they pass-protecting? Are they run-blocking? Are they shifting
- 38:52Speaker 6: and moving in a way where we can gain advantages
- 38:54Speaker 6: and doing the things that we need to do? And
- 38:56Speaker 6: do they understand why we're doing it? So it's a
- 38:59Speaker 6: good room that I think is improving.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Okay, he was asked, and this is as a follow-up
- 39:04Speaker 1: to what he was talking about on Monday about trying
- 39:06Speaker 1: to get the running game re-engaged. They'll get Hollywood Smothers back,
- 39:11Speaker 1: but they didn't run the ball the way they wanted.
- 39:14Speaker 2: To in the win against Tennessee.
- 39:15Speaker 1: So he was asked, how much has he challenged his
- 39:19Speaker 1: team to run the football better.
- 39:21Speaker 6: We're always trying to run the ball. I mean, that's
- 39:23Speaker 6: no different. And this game obviously carries that weight. We
- 39:26Speaker 6: know the value of running the football. And so then
- 39:29Speaker 6: we to find a way to do it.
- 39:32Speaker 1: Also was asked. About the rivalry. Between Texas and Oklahoma.
- 39:38Speaker 1: He congratulated Mack Brown. It was announced yesterday. Mack is
- 39:41Speaker 1: going to be part of the 2027 class. of the
- 39:44Speaker 1: Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame. You think about when Mack's
- 39:46Speaker 1: first Cotton Bowl, Ricky Williams, the Heisman year, they beat
- 39:48Speaker 1: Mississippi State. They did lose to Arkansas in the Y2K
- 39:51Speaker 1: Cotton Bowl when Major Appwhite tore his ACL in that game.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Came back in the Cotton Bowl in 2002, January 2003.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Final game for Chris Sims and Roy Williams, no, not Roy,
- 40:06Speaker 1: but Chris and a couple other guys. And the Longhorns
- 40:08Speaker 1: beat an LSU team coached by Nick Saban, beat them 35-20.
- 40:13Speaker 1: So Mack named the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame, but
- 40:16Speaker 1: of course coached Longhorns to wins in the matchup against Oklahoma.
- 40:20Speaker 1: So Sark was asked, has he and Coach Brown shared
- 40:24Speaker 1: some memories and experiences about this matchup?
- 40:27Speaker 6: I talked to coach Brown quite a bit about a
- 40:29Speaker 6: lot of different things, honestly, you know, and he's been,
- 40:31Speaker 6: he's coached in so many big games and throughout his
- 40:33Speaker 6: career and just kind of the mindset of the team.
- 40:37Speaker 6: And one thing that, that he kind of passed down
- 40:40Speaker 6: for me to me from actually from coach Royal was
- 40:43Speaker 6: just about, you don't want to peak too soon during
- 40:47Speaker 6: the week when you're getting ready to play rivalry games
- 40:49Speaker 6: because of the, the emotion that that is required in
- 40:53Speaker 6: the game. And so we try to, kind of build
- 40:56Speaker 6: towards Saturday and not play the game on Tuesday or Wednesday.
- 41:00Speaker 6: We try to play the game on Saturday. So I
- 41:03Speaker 6: did take that to heart. And he told me that
- 41:04Speaker 6: actually a few weeks ago and definitely took that to
- 41:07Speaker 6: heart this week as we were building towards this game
- 41:09Speaker 6: of like incremental growth, incremental progress, incremental levels of intensity
- 41:14Speaker 6: to make sure that our intensity and our executions at
- 41:18Speaker 6: a real high come Saturday.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Yeah. Matt told that story a few weeks ago, Longhorn Weekly,
- 41:22Speaker 1: where they had a great Tuesday practice. And you'll hear
- 41:25Speaker 1: Sark talk about a little more in the next segment
- 41:27Speaker 1: coming up of the OU week. And Mack felt really,
- 41:30Speaker 1: really good about that and walked off, said to Coach Royal,
- 41:32Speaker 1: who's there standing there at practice, this was 2000, and said,
- 41:36Speaker 1: I feel really, really good. He said to Coach Royal, said, careful, boy,
- 41:40Speaker 1: you might've just played the game today. And Oklahoma won
- 41:44Speaker 1: the game on Saturday, 63 to 14. Quinn Griffin scored
- 41:47Speaker 1: six touchdowns in that game. He said, hard lesson, to
- 41:51Speaker 1: learn to net. So that's kind of what Sark was
- 41:52Speaker 1: referring to there. Oklahoma's two and two, but Sark describes
- 41:58Speaker 1: them like the old wounded tiger thing about being dangerous.
- 42:01Speaker 6: We've been on the other side of that too. And
- 42:03Speaker 6: we know how we've played when we were in that situation.
- 42:06Speaker 6: So it was, it's I don't want to say it's
- 42:09Speaker 6: easy to get our players attention with it, but easier
- 42:15Speaker 6: than maybe other weeks when we can say, Hey, a
- 42:17Speaker 6: year ago, we were in the same position coming out
- 42:19Speaker 6: of the Florida game. And how did we play? And
- 42:21Speaker 6: so we know we're going to get OU's best shot.
- 42:24Speaker 6: And they're a really good team. They're a very talented team.
- 42:26Speaker 6: And they've got good coaches. Sometimes things don't go your way.
- 42:32Speaker 6: And you just don't quite get the momentum that you need.
- 42:35Speaker 6: And hopefully they don't figure it out Saturday either. Hopefully
- 42:38Speaker 6: we can cause a little more chaos for them. But
- 42:41Speaker 6: I know we're going to get their best shot. And
- 42:43Speaker 6: I know they're going to have a great plan. I
- 42:45Speaker 6: know their kids are going to play hard. and physical
- 42:48Speaker 6: and tough because that's what that program is built on.
- 42:50Speaker 6: And so we know it's going to be a four-quarter game.
- 42:53Speaker 6: Rivalry games generally go that way. And we know we're
- 42:56Speaker 6: going to need to play good football if we want
- 42:57Speaker 6: to come out on top. Okay.
- 42:58Speaker 5: All right.
- 42:59Speaker 2: A couple other things from Sark this hour.
- 43:03Speaker 1: And also, like I said, coming up, we're going to
- 43:04Speaker 1: hear a little sneak preview of tonight's edition of Longhorn
- 43:07Speaker 1: Weekly with Coach Sark.
- 43:10Speaker 2: He was asked if he.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Reminds his players of these close contests that they've had
- 43:16Speaker 1: NSEC conference games?
- 43:18Speaker 6: I never assume anything with our guys. You never know.
- 43:21Speaker 6: So I always remind them of things. Some things I
- 43:25Speaker 6: harp on a little bit more. There's some things I
- 43:28Speaker 6: don't belabor the point. We talked about it on Monday
- 43:32Speaker 6: about you know, the games that, you know, we really
- 43:35Speaker 6: challenged everybody to watch football last weekend. And we talked
- 43:38Speaker 6: about the Florida-Missouri game. We talked about the Kentucky-South Carolina game.
- 43:43Speaker 6: You know, we talked about this game in particular in
- 43:46Speaker 6: years past. But again, I don't, I didn't belabor that
- 43:50Speaker 6: point because the majority of them watched it. A lot
- 43:52Speaker 6: of them saw it. I got text messages about it
- 43:54Speaker 6: from our guys. And so, Point being, it's an acknowledgement
- 43:58Speaker 6: of it, but then it's okay, what are we gonna do, right?
- 44:01Speaker 6: I mean, there's only so much talk, then it's about
- 44:04Speaker 6: what are you gonna do? And the best thing you
- 44:05Speaker 6: can do is prepare really well. And that's in meetings,
- 44:08Speaker 6: that's in walkthroughs, that's in practice, that's in your recovery,
- 44:11Speaker 6: that's in your sleep, that's in your hydration, that's all
- 44:14Speaker 6: the things. And like I said, I think we've had
- 44:17Speaker 6: a good week of that so far.
- 44:18Speaker 1: All right, and then one other thing, and this is
- 44:20Speaker 1: as a follow-up to the SEC Student Athlete Availability Report,
- 44:25Speaker 1: that was released, the initial report, last night. Oklahoma has
- 44:30Speaker 1: a whole bunch of guys in various stages. For example,
- 44:35Speaker 1: four players out, including wide receiver Terrell Harris, three players doubtful,
- 44:41Speaker 1: including their outstanding anchor of the offensive line, Michael Fasusi,
- 44:45Speaker 1: five players listed as questionable, and one guy's probable. For
- 44:50Speaker 1: the Longhorns, one guy out, Jordan Coleman, backup offensive lineman,
- 44:54Speaker 1: Two doubtful, wide receiver Khalid Lockett and defensive lineman Justice Terry.
- 44:59Speaker 2: And then one.
- 45:01Speaker 1: Guy listed as probable, and that is Nick Townsend trying
- 45:04Speaker 1: to bounce his way back. So Sark was asked, how
- 45:08Speaker 1: much credit goes to the training staff for having, by comparison,
- 45:13Speaker 1: a somewhat light injury report?
- 45:15Speaker 6: First of all, credit to the University of Texas and
- 45:19Speaker 6: our administration and Chris Del Conte for providing us with
- 45:23Speaker 6: the resources to keep our players healthy and to keep
- 45:26Speaker 6: them fresh and to get them, you know, rehabbed and recovered, um,
- 45:29Speaker 6: whether they're injured or whether they're just banged up as
- 45:32Speaker 6: the season goes on. But, but also a ton of
- 45:34Speaker 6: credit to Donna Wynn in the training room, Alan Harden, uh,
- 45:38Speaker 6: and Dr. Bray, um, Tori Becton, uh, the strength and conditioning.
- 45:43Speaker 6: I mean, those guys exhaust themselves, um, in, in getting
- 45:46Speaker 6: our players back ready to perform. Um, and, but like
- 45:50Speaker 6: I said, you know, a bi-week helps, um, and then,
- 45:53Speaker 6: and then managing practice and managing our numbers. And I
- 45:56Speaker 6: believe in science. And so we get real numbers on
- 45:59Speaker 6: players and volume and running and hitting and different things and,
- 46:04Speaker 6: and managing our players in a way of understanding that
- 46:07Speaker 6: this is a long season, you know, it's going to
- 46:09Speaker 6: end up being hopefully a six month season. And so
- 46:12Speaker 6: it's not just about one week or two weeks. It's
- 46:15Speaker 6: about the totality of it all. Um, So adding all
- 46:19Speaker 6: that up and putting all those ingredients into the pot,
- 46:22Speaker 6: I think that we've got a pretty good formula for
- 46:24Speaker 6: success of keeping our players healthy or getting them back
- 46:29Speaker 6: healthy when they do get injured. Injuries do occur. It's football.
- 46:33Speaker 6: That's just the nature of the sport. The goal is
- 46:36Speaker 6: to get our guys back as quickly as possible if
- 46:38Speaker 6: they do get nicked up.
- 46:39Speaker 2: All right.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Well, we'll have more from the media zoom coming up
- 46:43Speaker 1: next hour. But up next, We'll sneak preview of tonight's
- 46:46Speaker 1: edition of Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark.
- 46:48Speaker 2: We'll talk about this matchup with Oklahoma.
- 46:51Speaker 1: That's next here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the
- 46:53Speaker 1: Zone and the iHeartRadio app. You know, in the two
- 46:58Speaker 1: albums that Fleetwood Mac released in 76 and 77, mega
- 47:02Speaker 1: platinum sales and multiple hit songs. This was one of the,
- 47:08Speaker 1: I think, one of the more underrated numbers. by Fleetwood Mac.
- 47:13Speaker 1: Gold Dust 1.
- 47:14Speaker 3: I'm glad you brought up the year because that, you know,
- 47:16Speaker 3: made me think of it talking about the 76 Red
- 47:18Speaker 3: River rivalry.
- 47:20Speaker 2: 6-6 tie.
- 47:21Speaker 1: What was it? The comment we got about it said, no, no,
- 47:25Speaker 1: hold them back, huh, right?
- 47:27Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 47:27Speaker 4: Not sugarcoating. Craig said, don't sugarcoat it, Craig.
- 47:29Speaker 6: Yeah, right.
- 47:31Speaker 1: That's what Coach Royal called them. Smurfy bastards. After the
- 47:37Speaker 1: spying scandal and they went up in the 6-6 tie.
- 47:39Speaker 1: That was Coach Royal's final season. After that game, he
- 47:43Speaker 1: had been so wrought up and things mounting, he said
- 47:46Speaker 1: he was actually physically ill in the locker room afterwards.
- 47:50Speaker 2: They came away with a tie.
- 47:53Speaker 1: And the other tie that comes to mind for me
- 47:55Speaker 1: is 1995. John McAfee was the coach, and they got
- 47:58Speaker 1: up to a 21-0 lead, Texas, and they wound up
- 48:01Speaker 1: in a 24-24 tie. Howard Schnellenberger was the head coach.
- 48:07Speaker 1: Play football for Sooner Nation.
- 48:10Speaker 4: Sam Elliott?
- 48:11Speaker 2: Yeah, it was kind of. And he went 5-5-1, and
- 48:13Speaker 2: then he was out.
- 48:15Speaker 1: And that was the last time that both Texas and
- 48:20Speaker 1: Oklahoma had a tie game, not only against each other,
- 48:22Speaker 1: but period.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Because the next year, overtime came in.
- 48:26Speaker 1: And that's when Oklahoma won the first game that went
- 48:29Speaker 1: overtime between the two, 30-27. And that's when the overtime
- 48:33Speaker 1: rule was so new The Longhorns won the toss. It
- 48:37Speaker 1: was their first ever overtime game of any kind. So
- 48:41Speaker 1: people hadn't figured out the strategy. Texas chose to take
- 48:44Speaker 1: the ball there in overtime. They wound up settling for
- 48:48Speaker 1: a Phil Dawson field goal. Oklahoma got the ball. James
- 48:52Speaker 1: Allen scores the game-winning touchdown.
- 48:53Speaker 2: They win 30-27.
- 48:55Speaker 1: That was two years after Allen was the one who
- 48:58Speaker 1: was stopped at the goal line by Stoney Clark to
- 49:00Speaker 1: end the 94 game. So these kinds of games and
- 49:05Speaker 1: other ones in the Texas OU Red River rivalry were
- 49:09Speaker 1: all a part of our conversation. A little sneak preview
- 49:12Speaker 1: of tonight's Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sarton. The Texas Longhorns
- 49:16Speaker 1: go back to work. Not that they weren't working during
- 49:18Speaker 1: the open day. We just didn't have a game last week.
- 49:21Speaker 1: But coming out of the bye, getting ready for the
- 49:22Speaker 1: Oklahoma Sooners in the 122nd edition of the Red River Rivalry.
- 49:29Speaker 2: At the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
- 49:30Speaker 1: And you've spoken quite eloquently this week about what this
- 49:34Speaker 1: game is. means to you even in your short time
- 49:37Speaker 1: at Texas and how you see it in the big
- 49:39Speaker 1: picture of college football.
- 49:41Speaker 6: Yeah, when you look at it in the grand scheme
- 49:43Speaker 6: of things, this is my sixth one this Saturday of 122.
- 49:47Speaker 6: So six feels like a lot, you know, to some
- 49:51Speaker 6: degree until you put it in comparison to 122 times
- 49:54Speaker 6: these two teams have played. And so Now, when I
- 50:00Speaker 6: assess it, when I look at it every year, I'm like, man,
- 50:03Speaker 6: I'm so humbled to be part of it. I mean,
- 50:05Speaker 6: you think about the great players and the great teams
- 50:08Speaker 6: on both sides, you know, not just Texas, OU as well,
- 50:11Speaker 6: the coaches, the players, the teams. The fact that it's
- 50:16Speaker 6: at the Texas State Fair, it's at the old Cotton Bowl,
- 50:21Speaker 6: you know, as we all know, the way the stands
- 50:23Speaker 6: are split at the 50-yard line. There's other neutral site games,
- 50:26Speaker 6: but the fans are always split, you know, behind each bench.
- 50:30Speaker 6: at the 50 yard line. Um, I learned the hard way,
- 50:33Speaker 6: you know, when you're in OU's end of the field,
- 50:35Speaker 6: our first year, it's like a road game and you
- 50:38Speaker 6: can't hear, and you better know how to operate with
- 50:40Speaker 6: crowd noise. And then at the other end, it's like
- 50:42Speaker 6: a home game. Uh, and so how do you keep
- 50:44Speaker 6: them down in your end of the field? But, uh,
- 50:47Speaker 6: the tunnel, the locker rooms, the whole thing. And it's, uh,
- 50:50Speaker 6: it's a very, very special game. And it's, I know
- 50:53Speaker 6: it means a lot here on the 40 acres. I
- 50:56Speaker 6: know it means a lot for OU, but this game
- 50:59Speaker 6: is special. for college football. And, you know, I've said
- 51:03Speaker 6: all I was saying earlier today, like growing up in California, um,
- 51:09Speaker 6: you know, 9.00 AM was when you woke up because 11.00 AM,
- 51:13Speaker 6: this ball was getting kicked off central time and it
- 51:16Speaker 6: was the only game on, and this is what you watched.
- 51:18Speaker 6: I mean, this was iconic uniforms, battling, competing, great players,
- 51:23Speaker 6: great teams. And so, um, I admired this game from afar, obviously.
- 51:28Speaker 6: Now being immersed in it in year six, it's never
- 51:31Speaker 6: been more special to me. So we're very fortunate.
- 51:35Speaker 1: I think the other thing, and it's been pointed out,
- 51:37Speaker 1: depending on exactly where you live or whatever, it's almost
- 51:40Speaker 1: exactly equidistant. It's like 196 miles from Norman, 204 from
- 51:44Speaker 1: Austin or something right in that area as well. And
- 51:47Speaker 1: the fans split up, as you pointed out. I know
- 51:51Speaker 1: it doesn't change anything. how you prepare your team to
- 51:55Speaker 1: play a game, but in terms of the atmosphere, and
- 51:58Speaker 1: I know you were asked about this, I think, uh,
- 52:00Speaker 1: on the SEC teleconference, does it change balancing the excitement
- 52:05Speaker 1: of the game and the atmosphere with locking in and
- 52:09Speaker 1: the focus that, that your team needs to play the game?
- 52:12Speaker 6: Well, I, I think one, you have to acknowledge what
- 52:14Speaker 6: the game is. You got to start there. And, and, and,
- 52:17Speaker 6: and clearly we do that. And, and, um, But then
- 52:21Speaker 6: we try to get back to recalibrating to, okay, we
- 52:25Speaker 6: all want to win Saturday, right? Raise your hand.
- 52:27Speaker 5: Yes.
- 52:28Speaker 6: Okay. Here's what we need to do. We need to
- 52:30Speaker 6: take it. You know, today's the most important day. We've
- 52:33Speaker 6: got to try to win today. How do we win today?
- 52:35Speaker 6: We have really good meetings, right? You have really good walkthroughs.
- 52:39Speaker 6: You have a really good practice. You come back in
- 52:41Speaker 6: the afternoon and you watch a tape with your coach
- 52:44Speaker 6: and you make the proper adjustments and changes and fix
- 52:46Speaker 6: the things that need to be fixed. You come back
- 52:48Speaker 6: the next morning. Have a really good workout with Coach
- 52:50Speaker 6: Becton in.
- 52:51Speaker 1: The weight room.
- 52:51Speaker 6: Like that's how you have to do it. Understanding as
- 52:56Speaker 6: a coach, knowing the closer we get to the game,
- 52:59Speaker 6: the adrenaline starts to rise, right? And so on Monday,
- 53:03Speaker 6: maybe the adrenaline, you know, I don't need them to
- 53:06Speaker 6: peak on Monday. I need them focused on what we
- 53:08Speaker 6: need to do. Understanding as we get closer to the game,
- 53:11Speaker 6: that adrenaline is going to start to rise the morning
- 53:13Speaker 6: of the game, so on and so forth. And then
- 53:15Speaker 6: how do I get them into a space on game day?
- 53:18Speaker 6: to have the right mental intensity, the right focus, okay,
- 53:22Speaker 6: so that they can be clear-minded to execute all the
- 53:25Speaker 6: things we did Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, all the
- 53:29Speaker 6: while having emotion but not getting emotional in the moment,
- 53:33Speaker 6: which we've seen in this game. Emotions can run high,
- 53:35Speaker 6: and we've seen it for years and years and years.
- 53:38Speaker 6: And so that's always the challenge, right, of how do
- 53:41Speaker 6: you do that in games like this, this game in particular.
- 53:44Speaker 6: I always think that those are the teams that perform
- 53:47Speaker 6: best in those moments. And so that's what we try
- 53:50Speaker 6: to do. I said last year we did a really
- 53:53Speaker 6: poor job of that on offense in the first quarter.
- 53:55Speaker 6: I don't know if you remember that first quarter. We
- 53:56Speaker 6: were going backwards and all sorts of stuff was going on.
- 53:59Speaker 6: But then we settled in and played a really good
- 54:01Speaker 6: second half. So the sooner we can settle them in
- 54:04Speaker 6: and play all three phases and execute the plan, the
- 54:09Speaker 6: better off we'll be.
- 54:11Speaker 1: We had Matt Brown here with us a few weeks back,
- 54:13Speaker 1: and he was talking about how they had this fabulous practice.
- 54:16Speaker 2: On a Tuesday. And he said it was so exciting.
- 54:19Speaker 2: It was OU week.
- 54:20Speaker 1: And Coach Roy was there watching and said, to use
- 54:22Speaker 1: Mac's quote, better be careful, boy. You might have just
- 54:24Speaker 1: played the game there. And he said he learned from that.
- 54:27Speaker 1: And Oklahoma won big that day at the end.
- 54:31Speaker 2: Of that week. Do you have to do an actual
- 54:36Speaker 2: dialing back?
- 54:38Speaker 1: Vocality to your guys about don't play the game now
- 54:41Speaker 1: let's work on the things that we need to work
- 54:44Speaker 1: on because I know going into the bye week there
- 54:46Speaker 1: were things you wanted to address with the team and
- 54:48Speaker 1: have them.
- 54:49Speaker 6: Improve yeah you know I think naturally um the bye
- 54:52Speaker 6: week was the bye week and and we did we
- 54:54Speaker 6: we we were striving for improvement from guys that are
- 54:57Speaker 6: playing a lot of football we were pushing for improvement
- 55:00Speaker 6: for guys that we were trying to get onto the
- 55:02Speaker 6: field and we were pushing for development from some from
- 55:05Speaker 6: other players that we feel like can step up at
- 55:07Speaker 6: some point And so the bye week was the bye week.
- 55:09Speaker 6: This week came back. I said this in the press
- 55:11Speaker 6: conference on Monday. OU or whomever else, I'm not a
- 55:16Speaker 6: big rah-rah speech guy on a Monday because I think
- 55:21Speaker 6: teams can peak too soon during a week. Now, Thursday, Friday,
- 55:27Speaker 6: Saturday in the locker room, yeah, those speeches start to
- 55:29Speaker 6: come out. But Monday, Monday, really Monday through Wednesday, even
- 55:34Speaker 6: into Thursday, I'm about business. You know, I'm about, here's
- 55:37Speaker 6: what we need to do. Here's how we're going to
- 55:39Speaker 6: do it. And we coach that way. It's not about
- 55:42Speaker 6: them per se. It's about us. What do we need
- 55:45Speaker 6: to do? How do we stay enamored with us? How
- 55:47Speaker 6: do we hold each other accountable that we're doing the
- 55:49Speaker 6: things necessary to put ourselves in position to have success?
- 55:54Speaker 6: Are we after practice? Are we doing recovery? Or are
- 55:57Speaker 6: we reading Twitter to see what everybody's saying about the game?
- 56:00Speaker 6: It's like, Where's our focus? Where are we intentional in
- 56:03Speaker 6: preparing ourselves to perform come Saturday? And then as the
- 56:08Speaker 6: closer we get, like I said, like, you know, that's
- 56:09Speaker 6: my job as a coach is to make sure that
- 56:12Speaker 6: our temperature is right when that ball is getting kicked off.
- 56:15Speaker 6: And so you have to build towards it. I don't
- 56:17Speaker 6: want to sleepwalk through the ball game, but I also
- 56:20Speaker 6: know the importance of execution. And I feel like we
- 56:23Speaker 6: have done a pretty good job through the first five
- 56:25Speaker 6: years in this game. I know we haven't won it
- 56:27Speaker 6: every time. but we have played pretty well in this game,
- 56:31Speaker 6: excluding probably one where we had the three turnovers. I
- 56:34Speaker 6: think that was in 23?
- 56:37Speaker 4: Yep.
- 56:37Speaker 6: We lose the turnover battle 3-0. We have almost 600
- 56:40Speaker 6: yards of offense and we throw the Hail Mary at
- 56:43Speaker 6: the end of the game. So outside of that, we've
- 56:45Speaker 6: played pretty good. We were a little outgunned, I think,
- 56:49Speaker 6: in year one, but we played pretty good knowing how
- 56:51Speaker 6: good that OU team was, and it was kind of
- 56:54Speaker 6: the birth of Caleb Williams. We've played pretty good. We've
- 56:56Speaker 6: played pretty good on defense. We've ran the ball pretty well.
- 56:59Speaker 6: We've protected the ball pretty well because those are kind
- 57:02Speaker 6: of the prerequisites to playing good football in any game,
- 57:05Speaker 6: regardless of rivalry game, neutral site game, so on and
- 57:09Speaker 6: so forth. But it is surely a lot of fun.
- 57:12Speaker 6: I will say that. And again, I say that to
- 57:15Speaker 6: the guys, whether we're playing at DKR or another stadium
- 57:18Speaker 6: or in this game, I always want them to enjoy
- 57:20Speaker 6: the experience. I want to make sure they take a
- 57:21Speaker 6: moment to take it all in But then I want
- 57:24Speaker 6: them to play really good because I know that that's
- 57:25Speaker 6: what they want to do. And so how do I
- 57:27Speaker 6: get them in position to play good football?
- 57:31Speaker 1: How would you describe the bye week and the work
- 57:34Speaker 1: that went in? Because you, coming out of the Tennessee game,
- 57:37Speaker 1: had the Monday press conference and said there are definite
- 57:40Speaker 1: pinpointed areas that we want to be better at, that
- 57:43Speaker 1: we've got to be better at going forward. How would
- 57:44Speaker 1: you describe the week of work that went into that
- 57:48Speaker 1: open day week?
- 57:49Speaker 6: Well, I thought it was good in essence of we
- 57:53Speaker 6: identified some issues that we were having of what was
- 57:56Speaker 6: a constant theme of what we were seeing from opponents.
- 57:59Speaker 6: So you can address that, right? It's like, hey, we're
- 58:02Speaker 6: getting this same defense multiple times a game for a
- 58:05Speaker 6: few games now. Let's make sure we understand it. One, schematically. Two,
- 58:11Speaker 6: fundamentally how we're blocking it or how we're running routes
- 58:13Speaker 6: or how we're reading coverages, so on and so forth.
- 58:15Speaker 6: So I thought that was good.
- 58:17Speaker 1: Two.
- 58:18Speaker 6: The development of our younger players. I thought they got
- 58:21Speaker 6: a lot of really good work, a lot of competitive
- 58:23Speaker 6: work in settings, and we made it as game-like as
- 58:26Speaker 6: we could. Three, I thought individual players of areas where
- 58:30Speaker 6: we wanted them to improve their game, right? Were we
- 58:33Speaker 6: doing that? Were they working on the subtleties of their game?
- 58:36Speaker 6: And whether it's from a Ryan Wingo to an Arch
- 58:39Speaker 6: Manning to a Dylan Sikorski, right, to a a Kobe Black,
- 58:43Speaker 6: you know, a Cade Phillips, like all these guys. And
- 58:46Speaker 6: then the fourth was getting healthy, right? We played four
- 58:50Speaker 6: pretty physical games, especially the last three that we had played.
- 58:54Speaker 6: And you're always going to have bumps and bruises. We
- 58:56Speaker 6: had a few things that were beyond bumps and bruises.
- 58:59Speaker 6: So to get some of those guys back and healthy
- 59:01Speaker 6: has been great for us. I feel like, you know,
- 59:05Speaker 6: knock on wood, like we're about as healthy as you
- 59:08Speaker 6: can expect to be going in game number five. You're
- 59:11Speaker 6: always going to have some guys that are, that are
- 59:12Speaker 6: binged up and can't play, but at this level of play,
- 59:16Speaker 6: you know, to be about as healthy where we are,
- 59:19Speaker 6: that's a good sign. So I thought the bye week
- 59:22Speaker 6: was great from, from a team perspective. I thought it
- 59:24Speaker 6: gave him a chance to kind of take a deep
- 59:26Speaker 6: breath you know when you play a high level of
- 59:29Speaker 6: game like Ohio State was when your SEC openers on
- 59:33Speaker 6: the road at Neyland Stadium in that environment that can
- 59:35Speaker 6: take a lot of emotional energy out of you so
- 59:38Speaker 6: I think to kind of recharge that battery knowing what
- 59:42Speaker 6: was coming this week as well as what's going to
- 59:44Speaker 6: come down the road I thought that was effective.
- 59:45Speaker 1: For us as well all right we're going to hear
- 59:47Speaker 1: more uh from Sark another little sneak preview snippet coming
- 59:51Speaker 1: up next hour that's That is from tonight's edition of
- 59:55Speaker 1: Longhorn Weekly.
- 59:55Speaker 2: It comes your way at 7 o'clock.
- 59:57Speaker 1: Our special guest will be Lamar Houston, who was a
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: big part of those Texas back-to-back wins in 08 and 09.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: What an impressive guy he is.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Was when he played at Texas, played eight years in
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: the NFL, and has now gone into the high-tech and
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: entrepreneurship world.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: And has done a tremendous job. So we'll visit with him.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: Tonight on the show, again, at 7 o'clock here on
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: The Zone. We'll have another excerpt from that show coming
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: up next hour. Up next, we hear from Jerry Jones
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: on the eve of Cowboys and Tampa Bay, which is tonight,
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: which you get a year on 98.1 FM KVET, beginning
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: coverage beginning at 6 and the kickoff at 7. But
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: we're from Jerry next right here on 1300 The Zone.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: The Cowboys are back in the saddle tonight as they
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: get ready to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jerry Jones,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: never a dull moment with him, right? When he does
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: his weekly radio thing on 105.3 The Fan of Doubt.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: They moved it back from Tuesday to Wednesday this week.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: But Jerry was asked, did he expect to see what
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: he ended up seeing from Joey Porter Jr.
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: In his debut?
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: Yes, more. I didn't expect him to be out there
- 1:01:03Speaker 5: materially Sunday. Although we were talking about having those many snaps,
- 1:01:09Speaker 5: he really gave a good accounting of what he was doing,
- 1:01:14Speaker 5: how he was doing it. It shows me, shows us,
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: that as he works into knowledge and the coordination that
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: it takes to play back there, that he's got a
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: real spot that will help us. His physical abilities... will
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: serve us. They just don't go there because they know
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: what he's capable of, and he's basically got him covered
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: out there. Now, he will get tested. He's not Deion
- 1:01:44Speaker 5: Sanders out there where they just don't go there. He
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: will get tested, but I was real pleased with what
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: we got out of him Sunday.
- 1:01:52Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: There's that.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: That is going to beg the question. Is he planning
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: to have some contract extension talks, not only with Joey
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: Porter Jr., but also with George Pickens? Would that happen
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: while this season is going on?
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: We don't even have to in any way. We've got
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: great agreements, and the agreements are in place so that
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: I don't even have to talk about a question like that.
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: And I'm not at all deterred by the question, but
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: we've got that put to bed. in terms of their business,
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: one way or the other. Now, I wouldn't answer as
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: to whether or not we visit about any of their
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: business during the season other than how they're playing or
- 1:02:42Speaker 5: how they're going to play.
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: Okay, all right.
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: So there's some more from... Jerry Jones, and obviously we'll
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: keep folks updated on that. And again, the game is tonight.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: You'll hear it here on 1300 The Zone. It will come, no,
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: you will hear it on 98.1 FM KVET. You'll hear
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark here on The Zone at
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: seven o'clock. Longhorn Weekly here on this station, Cowboys Bucks
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: on 98.1 FM KVET.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: All right, when we come back.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: We'll tell you about a couple of the other college
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: football matchups and how God might be interfering with those
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: when we continue on 1300 The Zone. Third and final
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM 1300
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: The Zone.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: Glad to be with you here on this Thursday.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: Before we head north, at least a lot of us anyway,
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: Jake will stay comfortably ensconced here before he also spins
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: off to do Bastrop versus Crockett tomorrow night, correct?
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: District opener.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: And then a rare open date Saturday for me.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: How about that?
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: So Texas OU, tomorrow the Red River Rivalry matchup. And
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: we've got a special preview of the weekend. How about this?
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: Four R's.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: Red River Rivalry Roundtable. So.
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: Rowl.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: Presented by Group One. We'll be in Dallas at Bar W.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: That's at 2926 Maple Avenue. Great place for it. And
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: it'll be a five-hour Red River rivalry. Radio roundtable.
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: Perhaps a bit reckless as well anyway we'll have a
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: lot of fun uh you know mike hardball harge mark
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: henry obviously i'll be there uh cameron parker uh we'll
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: have uh brad kelder and bucky got bolts bucky and
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: bk will be there we'll also have a babe luffenberg
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: the cowboys radio analyst who will be on the broadcast
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: of tonight's Cowboys-Bucks game that you can hear on 98.1
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: FM KVAD. Babe will drop by and visit with us
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: as well. We'll have a recap of that Cowboy game.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: And he's got some interesting college football stories to tell
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: of his time as an Indiana Hoosier. So we'll do
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: that tomorrow. That's the Red River Rivalry Roundtable presented by
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Group 1. Comes your way tomorrow from Bar W on
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: Maple Avenue. Let's hear some more from Longwood's head coach,
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Steve Sarkisian. This is from the media Zoom this morning,
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: the last media availability for the gathered media to visit
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: with Sark.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: They do it by Zoom every Thursday morning. And he
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: was asked about, you know, has.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: He gotten what he really wants to get, what he
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: really hopes to see out of his running game?
- 1:05:44Speaker 6: Yeah, no, I think for all of it is, you know,
- 1:05:47Speaker 6: outside of, you know, I think, the first game we
- 1:05:50Speaker 6: had all three of them and then, you know, Derek,
- 1:05:53Speaker 6: you know, they rolls his ankle and then it was
- 1:05:56Speaker 6: kind of the ball started rolling where different guys were
- 1:05:59Speaker 6: getting nicked up along the way. Ideally we have all
- 1:06:02Speaker 6: three of those guys ready to go, but I'm, I'm
- 1:06:04Speaker 6: very comfortable if we have two or in last week's case,
- 1:06:08Speaker 6: we really had one with Raleigh. I thought Raleigh ran
- 1:06:10Speaker 6: the ball. Well, could he have been even better? Sure.
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: But thought he ran well and a couple of touchdown
- 1:06:15Speaker 6: runs and different things. So, Ultimately, the closer we get
- 1:06:20Speaker 6: to having all three of those guys 100% healthy, great.
- 1:06:24Speaker 6: I don't know if any of them are going to
- 1:06:26Speaker 6: be 100% the rest of the way. They play running back.
- 1:06:30Speaker 6: There is a toll that it takes, but I also
- 1:06:32Speaker 6: know there's a reason we try to get depth in
- 1:06:34Speaker 6: that room because of the physicality of this league and
- 1:06:38Speaker 6: then hopefully the amount of games that we have an
- 1:06:40Speaker 6: opportunity to play.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: Certainly, it'll be good to have Hollywood Smothers back on
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: the field with Raleigh Brown in the backfield.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: And Sark was asked.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: About what are the unique gifts that Smothers brings to
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: the party?
- 1:06:54Speaker 6: I just like the, you know, for a guy who
- 1:06:56Speaker 6: doesn't have the biggest stature, he runs hard and he's
- 1:07:00Speaker 6: a vertical runner. He runs through arm tackles. He hits holes.
- 1:07:05Speaker 6: And so there is a change of pace. That's what
- 1:07:07Speaker 6: I do like. You know, I don't think he and
- 1:07:09Speaker 6: Raleigh run the same style. I think there's a uniqueness
- 1:07:12Speaker 6: to their style. And that's fun for us, but he
- 1:07:16Speaker 6: can hit it. He's a very good pass protector and
- 1:07:18Speaker 6: he catches the ball really well. So I think all
- 1:07:20Speaker 6: the tools that we look for in a running back
- 1:07:22Speaker 6: have shown up for him. Like I said, he's been
- 1:07:26Speaker 6: sorely missed not having them and it's good to have
- 1:07:28Speaker 6: him back.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: Okay, all right.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: Next, he was asked about really the methodology that goes
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: into getting Jermaine Bishop involved and more involved. Young man
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: has caught six passes for 81 yards so far this season.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: He is in the receiver rotation, especially when they go
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: with 10 personnel, one running back, and then they have
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: no tight ends and four wide receivers out there.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: So Sark was asked about that.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: How about the strategy and the methodology for finding the
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: right spots for for Bishop to be on the field.
- 1:08:04Speaker 6: Methodology. That's a big word, David. Okay. Anyhow, you know,
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: I think that the challenges is trying to put him
- 1:08:13Speaker 6: in position to have success so that he can continue
- 1:08:16Speaker 6: to build confidence as we go. At the same time,
- 1:08:21Speaker 6: you know, making sure that the ball's getting distributed to
- 1:08:23Speaker 6: the right people in space so that they can go
- 1:08:26Speaker 6: create and make plays and Clearly, Jermaine has that playmaking
- 1:08:30Speaker 6: ability in him, but so does Emmitt, so does Ryan,
- 1:08:33Speaker 6: so does Cam, so do the runners. We just got
- 1:08:36Speaker 6: to find the right rhythm to it all, and that's
- 1:08:39Speaker 6: been our challenge, and it will continue to be our
- 1:08:41Speaker 6: challenge until we can kind of hit our stride, you know,
- 1:08:45Speaker 6: kind of consistently as an offensive football team.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I got to give credit to David Eckert. He's
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: the one who had the question about him using the
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: term methodology.
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: I like that word.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: You know me, people, say that I'll use 200 words
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: when 20 will do, that sort of stuff.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: But that's a good word, their methodology.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: Sark was asked, has he learned?
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: And I got to tell you, I'm still a little
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: bit surprised. Not shocked.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: But I'm a little bit surprised when folks continue to
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: ask Sark what he's learned from Pete Carroll, what he's
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: learned from Nick Saban. The guy has been a head
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: coach for a while. You know, he's... He's been around
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: a bit, you know. He is now in his 13th
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: season as a head coach, his sixth season on campus. Yet,
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: folks will still ask him about advice he might have
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: gotten in rivalry games. This is his sixth Texas OU game,
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: and yet somebody asked him what he might have learned
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: from Nick Saban about rivalry games.
- 1:09:56Speaker 6: I think one is respect the rivalry. You know, Coach
- 1:09:59Speaker 6: Saban always had great respect for rivalry games. In the
- 1:10:05Speaker 6: same breath, it went right back to what did we
- 1:10:08Speaker 6: need to do in our process to get prepared to play.
- 1:10:11Speaker 6: He was not a big, you know, kind of rah-rah guy.
- 1:10:16Speaker 6: It was like, this is what we do on Monday.
- 1:10:19Speaker 6: And then Tuesday and then Wednesday and Thursday, you know,
- 1:10:22Speaker 6: he's very matter-of-fact that way. But, you know, his teams
- 1:10:26Speaker 6: were ready to play. And so I think there was
- 1:10:28Speaker 6: a lot of respect for the rivalry games, but also
- 1:10:31Speaker 6: a lot of respect for what we did internally. And
- 1:10:35Speaker 6: then that was the approach that we took.
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: Next, you might say emphasis, a point of emphasis going
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: into the open date penalties and trying to figure out
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: how to limit those penalties. And if you were listening
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: last hour, you heard when we brought you an excerpt
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: from Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sarge, him talking about how
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: they've done a really good job not committing penalties. I
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: think four total in the first two games combined. And
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: then lately there have been penalties. So he was asked,
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: how did he go about addressing the penalties in practice
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: during the open day?
- 1:11:15Speaker 6: I think you have to point them out. And then
- 1:11:18Speaker 6: you have to show them on video of why penalties occur.
- 1:11:22Speaker 6: And then how do we mitigate that from happening again?
- 1:11:26Speaker 6: And so, you know, one, we have to identify the
- 1:11:31Speaker 6: penalties and identify why they occurred. The players then have
- 1:11:35Speaker 6: to be coachable to make the adjustments so that they
- 1:11:37Speaker 6: don't occur again. And I also think the players have
- 1:11:40Speaker 6: to be coachable of learning from one another. Those are
- 1:11:43Speaker 6: all teachable moments. So we just don't want to continue
- 1:11:46Speaker 6: to make the same mistakes by the same person, clearly,
- 1:11:50Speaker 6: but also by others. And I think that's been our approach.
- 1:11:53Speaker 6: And that's obviously been a challenge of ours. and we'll
- 1:11:56Speaker 6: continue to emphasize it.
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: Okay, next, he was asked about Oklahoma's defense because it
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: really kind of has been the calling card of the
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: Sooners so far in trying to keep things between the lines,
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: give them a shot to win games.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: It's the defense that's been keeping them in games.
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: In specific, the defensive front for the Sooners, and that
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: includes the interior defensive line, as well for Oklahoma. And
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: those interior defensive linemen include David Stone and Jaden Jackson.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: Taylor Wine is on one defensive end spot. And then
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: on the other defensive end spot, you have Adipoju Adibawore.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: And he was asked about those guys, that defensive front
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: for Oklahoma.
- 1:12:46Speaker 6: They're elite. They're elite. Those two guys are fantastic players.
- 1:12:50Speaker 6: Jaden and David are fantastic players. We recruited both of them, obviously.
- 1:12:57Speaker 6: They play at a high level. They're active. They're physical.
- 1:13:01Speaker 6: They can two-gap you. They can get on an edge
- 1:13:05Speaker 6: of you. They can game you. Um, and obviously coach
- 1:13:08Speaker 6: Venable scheme, they've got a lot of defense and those
- 1:13:11Speaker 6: guys move and are in different spots a lot. So
- 1:13:13Speaker 6: it's not like, you know, where they're going to be
- 1:13:15Speaker 6: at every play. Um, but, but beyond that, I think
- 1:13:19Speaker 6: is all of the defense. You know, I think we'd
- 1:13:21Speaker 6: be remiss if we didn't talk about Kip Lewis, uh, and,
- 1:13:24Speaker 6: and Heineke and, and the corner, the bone, you know, the,
- 1:13:27Speaker 6: the corners and the safety, like these guys are good.
- 1:13:30Speaker 6: um you know they've given up 300 yards in one
- 1:13:32Speaker 6: game this year and that was to georgia who had
- 1:13:35Speaker 6: 303 yards um you know everybody's looking at the number
- 1:13:38Speaker 6: of the score of that game well when you when
- 1:13:40Speaker 6: you get a fumble recovery for a touchdown 90 yards
- 1:13:43Speaker 6: and you get the ball inside the 10 for another
- 1:13:45Speaker 6: touchdown like these guys are good i mean georgia had
- 1:13:49Speaker 6: six carries that went for five yards or more in
- 1:13:51Speaker 6: the game total so this is a very good defensive
- 1:13:54Speaker 6: front it's a very good defense very challenging And so
- 1:13:57Speaker 6: we definitely got to work it out for us.
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: Okay. And then finally, one more from Sark.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: This again from the media zoom this morning asked about
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: trying to keep his guys emotionally, mentally grounded as well
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: as execution wise in big games like these.
- 1:14:14Speaker 6: This is kind of what we do. You know, I mean,
- 1:14:17Speaker 6: I think when you come to Texas and you're on
- 1:14:19Speaker 6: a good team and you play at a high level,
- 1:14:22Speaker 6: we're going to be in big games. And, you know,
- 1:14:25Speaker 6: we take a lot of pride in playing well in
- 1:14:27Speaker 6: big games and we take a lot of pride in
- 1:14:29Speaker 6: winning big games. And I said this, I think, a
- 1:14:31Speaker 6: few weeks back or whatnot. we're not going to win
- 1:14:34Speaker 6: them all. You know, I mean, nobody wins every big
- 1:14:37Speaker 6: game they play in, you know, we've all, we've all
- 1:14:39Speaker 6: had our issues, but we went a lot of them
- 1:14:41Speaker 6: and we play pretty good. And I know we don't
- 1:14:44Speaker 6: always play perfect. And I know I get critiqued for
- 1:14:46Speaker 6: this or that in the big games and we can
- 1:14:48Speaker 6: do this better to do that better. But at the
- 1:14:50Speaker 6: end of the day, when you win, like that's the
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: one stat that matters the most. And so we're always
- 1:14:55Speaker 6: going to do everything in our power to try to
- 1:14:57Speaker 6: put our team in the best position to be successful
- 1:14:59Speaker 6: and ultimately try to win the game. And, and so we,
- 1:15:02Speaker 6: we don't really change that from week to week. Like
- 1:15:05Speaker 6: that's our mentality and the flow of the game sometimes
- 1:15:09Speaker 6: is going to dictate how we try to win the game.
- 1:15:11Speaker 6: You know, we go in with one plan and then
- 1:15:12Speaker 6: we may have to pivot as the game goes on.
- 1:15:14Speaker 6: But ultimately as coaches and as players, as part of
- 1:15:18Speaker 6: our program, like we're trying to win the game and, and,
- 1:15:21Speaker 6: you know, it's not about the flash. It's not about the,
- 1:15:25Speaker 6: it's like, do we have one more point than they have?
- 1:15:27Speaker 6: And are we seeing in the eyes of Texas and
- 1:15:29Speaker 6: singing Texas fight in the locker room as a victor?
- 1:15:33Speaker 6: And that's really what the mindset is, you know, week
- 1:15:35Speaker 6: to week for us.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:15:37Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: There it is from Sark.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: Now, again, coming up here in a few minutes, we
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: have another excerpt from tonight's additional sneak preview of Longhorn
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: Weekly with Coach Sark. Our special guest tonight, by the way,
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: Lamar Houston, big defense line, speaking of interior defensive linemen,
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: played on the outside and in the inside, started games
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: both at defensive tackle and defensive end. And we'll hear
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: tonight from Lamar Houston. Great conversation with him as well.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: But we'll have some specific breakdowns of Oklahoma. An excerpt
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: will bring you a sneak preview of tonight's edition of
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark, where he takes a closer
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: look at Oklahoma. The show itself will air at 7
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: o'clock here on The Zone.
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: Coming up, we'll have that.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: Also, a couple other college football notes here on a
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: Texas OU Week Thursday on Sports Radio AM 13 Under
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. Rolling us back here
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: out of the break.
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: Stay in school.
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: Stay off the hard stuff and keep it between the lines.
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: I think we said that phrase four or five times
- 1:16:38Speaker 3: on the show today. Sturgill Simpson with his version.
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'll tell you what.
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: It's really important to keep it between the lines if
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: you're driving up I-35. This being the Craig Way Show,
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: we entertain such questions as the one on the text
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: line asking, will I-35 south of Waco ever be finished?
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: It's the unanswerable question. It really is.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: You know, the curve there, right there where Temple becomes Belton,
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: that was always been a sluggish, slow-down area. And then
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: just off the south side of Belton near the Bell
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: County Convention Center, right around there, what do they call
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: it now?
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: It's got a sponsor name on it now.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: But anyway, that's always been a sluggish area.
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: Waco was a mess for a while. Then it got good.
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: And now it's messy again.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: So there's these constant improvements going on along I-35. And
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: we all know what I-35 is like, trying to drive
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: up there on Friday. So I'll be traversing it along
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: with others tomorrow morning, headed up to Dallas. And then
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: we'll bring you that Red River rivalry roundtable, radio style,
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: from Bar W., 2926 Maple Avenue. So I hope to
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: see you out there for that. There was a college
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: football note I wanted to get to. The Big Ten
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: basketball media days have been going on. And next week
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: is going to be SEC basketball media days, men's and women's.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: Big Ten has had it going on. So Tony Petitti
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: is the commissioner of the Big Ten, as we know.
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: And he was there.
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: And of course, he, along with Greg Sankey, the SEC commissioner,
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: have been kind of front and center on the whole
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: thing about for the college football playoff expanse or this
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: or that. Well, it was a little bit different discussion,
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: but TD was asked at the media days, if the
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: proposed protect college sports act is going to allow the
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: big Ten, which has 18 members right now, to maybe
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: add two more and get it to an even 20.
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: Petitti said, and I quote, the conference, while aggressively supporting
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: the bill, the Protect College Sports Act, has had, and
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: here's his quote, absolutely no discussions taking place around expansion,
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: and there haven't been for quite some time. He said
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: this conference has got 18 strong members.
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: We're focused on that.
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: There's a lot of things that we think we can
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: do inside the conference to continue to grow the position
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: that we have with the 18 members. Of course, the
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: bill passed the Senate last month. It next goes to
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: the House of Representatives. That would cap conference membership at
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: 20 teams, and it would require any school seeking to
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: move from one Power 4.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: Conference to another. We're looking at you, Florida State and Clemson.
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: To spend three years without any conference affiliation before joining
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: the new league.
- 1:19:47Speaker 4: Looking at you, North Carolina, maybe Virginia.
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: So the Big Ten most recently expanded, of course, by
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: landing four teams from the original Pac-12, USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington.
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: They had already added Nebraska, Rutgers, and Maryland. Petitti says
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: he's optimistic the bill will pass the House and said
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: it addresses core themes of around eligibility and transfer rules
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: that will help college sports reach a cleaner system of operation.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: He said he respects athletes who take legal means to
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: establish their eligibility, noting that a number of Big Ten
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: athletes have done so, but added that returning from a
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: professional league to college crosses a line. That's the bridge
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: too far there. Anyway, that came from that. It says
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: the Big Ten is not interested in expanding. at least
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: right now, getting to the max of 20. We've heard
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: no such conversations from the SEC expanding beyond 16 either.
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: As we mentioned tonight, we will bring you Longhorn Weekly.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: It comes up at 7 o'clock with Longhorn's head coach,
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: Steve Sarkisian. Lamar Houston will join us for a good
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: portion of the program as well. But, of course, on
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: the show every week, Sark and I break down the
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: opponent and look at the opponent in specifics, the strengths
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: and the challenges that the opponent presents for Texas. So
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: here was our conversation talking about the Oklahoma Sooners.
- 1:21:21Speaker 6: This group is a fantastic defensive football team, and we
- 1:21:24Speaker 6: know Coach Venables, that's his specialty. The front is elite.
- 1:21:28Speaker 6: The secondary is a bunch of returning players who play
- 1:21:30Speaker 6: at a high level, and the scheme is really good.
- 1:21:32Speaker 6: So work cut out for us over there. On the
- 1:21:35Speaker 6: other side, You know, you look at the Georgia game,
- 1:21:38Speaker 6: you're like, oh, well, the score's out of whack. Well,
- 1:21:40Speaker 6: they drive the length of the field. The ball slips
- 1:21:43Speaker 6: out of Mateer's hands. Georgia picks it up, runs 90
- 1:21:45Speaker 6: yards for a touchdown. They get another turnover. They run
- 1:21:48Speaker 6: the ball back inside the five-yard line, get a touchdown.
- 1:21:52Speaker 6: Georgia only had six runs go for five yards or
- 1:21:56Speaker 6: more in the game. Two of them were long touchdown runs.
- 1:22:00Speaker 6: And so what does it tell me? This is a
- 1:22:02Speaker 6: talented group. All right, they've got Satanya, who is a
- 1:22:06Speaker 6: really good receiver. He's an elite returner, arguably the best
- 1:22:08Speaker 6: returner in the country. So I hope people don't get
- 1:22:12Speaker 6: caught up looking at 2-2. This was my point earlier
- 1:22:15Speaker 6: about us. What have we done well? We've gotten a 4-0, right?
- 1:22:19Speaker 6: A year ago, I could have said, man, we were
- 1:22:21Speaker 6: good at this, we were good at that. But the
- 1:22:22Speaker 6: bottom line is we are what your record says you are.
- 1:22:24Speaker 6: We were 2-2. But we were a hungry 2-2 football team,
- 1:22:28Speaker 6: and we felt like we had something to prove. Our
- 1:22:30Speaker 6: backs were against the wall. And we were a wounded animal,
- 1:22:33Speaker 6: and that's what made us dangerous in that game last year,
- 1:22:35Speaker 6: especially in the second half when we were behind at halftime.
- 1:22:38Speaker 6: So we have to know what to expect from Oklahoma.
- 1:22:41Speaker 6: We're going to get their best shot. We're going to
- 1:22:43Speaker 6: get everything they got, the best play calls, the best effort,
- 1:22:46Speaker 6: the best schemes, all the stuff we're going to get. That,
- 1:22:49Speaker 6: to my point, is why we need to be focused
- 1:22:52Speaker 6: on what we need to do from an execution standpoint.
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: In terms of some of their offensive weaponry, the one
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: guy that keeps coming up that people are talking about,
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: is Rocky Beers, the tight end. And Hayden Hanson, the
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: other transfer, those guys have been a big, big part
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: of it.
- 1:23:08Speaker 6: Well, it's been interesting because there's been a little bit
- 1:23:10Speaker 6: of evolution into what OU offense had been over the
- 1:23:15Speaker 6: past couple of years to where they are now. They've
- 1:23:17Speaker 6: evolved to using more tight ends. I think that started
- 1:23:20Speaker 6: a year ago with the young man that was the
- 1:23:22Speaker 6: linebacker that they moved to tight end. And they've kind
- 1:23:25Speaker 6: of evolved this thing. And Rocky Beers is a real
- 1:23:28Speaker 6: issue because what they do is, they put 12 personnel
- 1:23:32Speaker 6: out there on the field, one back, two tight ends,
- 1:23:34Speaker 6: two receivers. And most people think you're running the ball.
- 1:23:37Speaker 6: They're in line. Well, Oklahoma splits you out and Rocky
- 1:23:41Speaker 6: beers is running routes like a receiver. And so they
- 1:23:43Speaker 6: create matchup issues that way. Um, which, which again is
- 1:23:47Speaker 6: always the hard part. And then you always have to
- 1:23:49Speaker 6: worry about Mateer's legs because of the quarterback run, whether
- 1:23:52Speaker 6: it's the design quarterback runs or the off schedule runs
- 1:23:55Speaker 6: when he tucks it and runs. And so, You've got
- 1:23:57Speaker 6: to put all that together and play really sound, good
- 1:24:00Speaker 6: defensive football.
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: Is this game also about surviving the initial surges of momentum,
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: whether it's good or bad, especially if things don't go
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: well early, like you mentioned the sluggish start offensively a
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: year ago, moving on, being able to block that out
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: and move on beyond it and play your game?
- 1:24:17Speaker 6: You know what's crazy is I feel like every year
- 1:24:20Speaker 6: it's gone different. Our first year here, shoot, I think
- 1:24:24Speaker 6: we block a punt, touchdown, touchdown, We score again. I mean,
- 1:24:27Speaker 6: it's 21 to something. We're up 34 to 13, whatever
- 1:24:30Speaker 6: the heck it was. Other year, I think Quinn throws
- 1:24:35Speaker 6: a pick on the second play of the game. He's
- 1:24:37Speaker 6: got two picks the first two drives of the game.
- 1:24:40Speaker 6: So we've been on both sides of it. I think
- 1:24:42Speaker 6: what's key in this game in particular is you have
- 1:24:46Speaker 6: to play four quarters, and you have to be committed
- 1:24:49Speaker 6: to a four-quarter football game, understanding that, yes, momentum is
- 1:24:52Speaker 6: going to swing back and forth, but stay into the grind,
- 1:24:55Speaker 6: staying consistent and understanding that, hey, we can turn the
- 1:24:58Speaker 6: tide back if it goes in their favors, but we've
- 1:25:01Speaker 6: got to do the things necessary to make that happen.
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: I ask you this every year.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: If things go well, what's going to be the choice
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: of the state fair food for you after the game?
- 1:25:10Speaker 5: Oh, wow.
- 1:25:11Speaker 6: The corn dog the one year was really, really good.
- 1:25:14Speaker 6: The turkey leg has been fantastic.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: And you like that sweet stuff too, like the chocolate
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: peanut butter combo.
- 1:25:20Speaker 6: I think this year I'm going funnel cake. If we're
- 1:25:22Speaker 6: fortunate enough to win– I think I want to, but
- 1:25:25Speaker 6: I want a deluxe funnel cake. I don't want just
- 1:25:28Speaker 6: the powdered sugar.
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: You want everything on it.
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: If we're lucky enough to win, I want a real
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: funnel cake, Bianco, okay? Yeah, he's telling John Bianco, I
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: want a real funnel cake. You know, what Sark has
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: done the last two years is, two years ago, he
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: told me he wanted to try a corndog, and they
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: were going to try to get him one, but somebody
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: else brought him a turkey leg first. And he ate
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: a good portion of the turkey leg. And the players,
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: by and large, independent poll, if you talked about like
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: the turkey leg, they prefer, I think they just like
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: having something big meaty thing to eat there as opposed
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: to the corn dog. Sark has a little more of
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: a sweet tooth. And last year, he went for the
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: corn dog. Somebody got him a corn dog. Might have
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: been John Bianco. That's why I said he wanted a
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: funnel cake if he gets it this year because he
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: has the sweet tooth, but he wants a fully loaded one. Like,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: not just the powdered sugar on it. You know, he wants,
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: you know, they can put some strawberries on it and
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: some chocolate sauce and stuff like that.
- 1:26:42Speaker 4: It's an after the interview dessert.
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: After post-game press. Here's the weird thing about that.
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: The press conferences that follow the Red River rivalry The
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: losing team goes first or is supposed to go first.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: And then the winning team follows. So we like that, A,
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: because it means Texas has won, and B, it gives
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: us an opportunity to get to Sark a little quicker
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: in the postgame and to get some other players on
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: before the designated ones go to the podium. okay, so
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: it works out like that, but they had a deal,
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: I don't know if it was after the 49-0 game,
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: or I want to say it was after two years ago,
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: the 34-3 game, but Brent Venables, for whatever reason, they
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: stayed in the locker room, and stayed in the locker room,
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: and stayed in the locker room a long, long, long, long,
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: long time before going out, and so then, you know,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: it was, it It took a long time anyway to
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: get them through the thing.
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: And so it kind of messed up the whole process
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: of the deal. It didn't work.
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: It wasn't like that last year. It was much more orderly.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: And hopefully it'll be that way. And hopefully Texas gets
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: the win. And, you know, Sark gets a fully loaded
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: funnel cake. I'm sure he would appreciate it. Or a
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: Choco dog. I want that chocolate-filled corn dog. I want
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: that chocolate-filled corn dog. No hot dog. It's just chocolate
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: on the inside of it. I want one of those,
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: hopefully in celebration after the game. Now, Will Matthews and I,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: the last two years, we've had a tradition of walking
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: out together and going down. And Will, by the way,
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: will be with us on the Red River Rivalry Roundtable
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: as well. So we'll have him join us for some
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: of it as well. But Will and I have had
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: this tradition of going down to the Fletcher. Corny Dog
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: Stand and getting corn dogs and then, you know, taking
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: the picture with the corn dogs. So we're double-fisted corn
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: dog eaters. I ate one and took two home with me.
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: One for me and one for Linda.
- 1:28:56Speaker 4: Did that stay good in your bag?
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: Wrapped up warm. got there, put it in the air fryer,
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: it's golden. Comes out just fine.
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: For those not watching us on stream, Craig with the
- 1:29:07Speaker 3: double-fisted corndogs look like he was doing the Wakanda Forever
- 1:29:10Speaker 3: from the Black Panther.
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: There it is.
- 1:29:12Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: Same thing, right? With the corndog.
- 1:29:15Speaker 5: Do that. Okay.
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: We need that picture.
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: We're going to hear more from Jerry Jones coming up
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: when we continue on Sports Radio AM 13 after the
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: zone in the IR Radio app.
- 1:29:26Speaker 4: My John B.
- 1:29:26Speaker 6: Stetson is.
- 1:29:33Speaker 7: We have stuck together through many a woman.
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: Are you counting on a cold north wind blowing down
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: into Dallas on Saturday?
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: Because I'm hearing it's going to be about 90. Well,
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: I'm not counting on that.
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: But I am a man that is superstitious.
- 1:29:50Speaker 3: And I think we came back with this before the
- 1:29:52Speaker 3: Red River game last year.
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: You're kidding.
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: And the message still holds true.
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: You remember this?
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: Well, YouTube remembered that I'd played it.
- 1:29:59Speaker 5: Oh.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: And so this one is.
- 1:30:04Speaker 4: I love it.
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:30:06Speaker 4: Another Texan.
- 1:30:07Speaker 3: Don't touch my hat. That's what the Longhorns are saying.
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: The golden hats.
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: You know, it's really weird about that golden hat thing that,
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: you know, it was a lot of folks don't know this.
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: For many years, it was the bronze hat. The hat
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: was bronze. It wasn't gold. It's a 10-gallon hat, but
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: it was spray-painted and mounted, you know, on that base.
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: And it was bronze for years. And then they finally went, ooh,
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: just go gold. And so it's a golden hat now.
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: I like how the fact you take it off of the,
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: on every, it seems like virtually every member, at least
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: every team leader of the opposing team puts on that hat. Now,
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: I don't think I ever saw either Matt Brown or
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: Bob Stoops put the hat on. I don't think I
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: ever saw that. I did see Charlie Strong do it.
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: I think I saw Tom Herman do it. Sark obviously
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: has done it. Team leaders have done it a lot.
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: You know, I think about things like when Case McCoy
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: was the quarterback, when they pulled the upset at 13
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: and that great, big smile of his and he had
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: the the golden hat on colt mccoy i think of
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: other longhorn players through the years have put that golden
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: hat on so it's it's it's kind of like skating
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: around with a stanley cup you know because they pass
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: it around when they're out there on the field.
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: Except when you get to one half of the stadium
- 1:31:45Speaker 3: with the golden hat everybody's.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: Left yeah that's true That's true. So they really kind
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: of keep it down to their end of the field
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: there when they do it.
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: So, yeah, there's this.
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: By the way, speaking of the state, I did see
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: the really cool thing, I thought, your team, the Washington Capitals,
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: since Aleksandr Ovechkin announced he's going to retire. So the
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: first game after that, last night, he's introduced on the
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: ice by his two sons. He's young, his kids, right?
- 1:32:13Speaker 3: And the crazy thing for guys my age now, yeah,
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: I get to say that, too. is that his sons
- 1:32:19Speaker 3: are about how old I was when I started watching
- 1:32:21Speaker 3: him play hockey.
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: Really?
- 1:32:23Speaker 5: Wow. Yeah.
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: So they introduced him there. So how old is he now? Ovechkin?
- 1:32:28Speaker 4: Ovechkin, I believe, is 39.
- 1:32:29Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:32:29Speaker 4: Might be off on that.
- 1:32:32Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: And this is his last year. He's going to retire.
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: He's 41. 41. And the all-time goal-scoring leader in NHL history.
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: Pretty impressive stuff.
- 1:32:45Speaker 5: Okay. Um.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: Cowboys get ready to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today.
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: Jerry Jones, like I said, always entertaining, was doing his
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: weekly radio dance up in Dallas on 105.3 The Fan. And,
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: you know, the Cowboys, of course, had to rally, score
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: 28 second half points to beat Houston last week. And
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: there have been those who have questioned the, the game
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: management of the coaching staff, namely Brian Schottenheimer. So Jerry
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: was asked, does he sit in on Schottenheimer's game management
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: meetings during the week?
- 1:33:24Speaker 5: Well, let me just answer your question this way. When
- 1:33:27Speaker 5: you're the ultimate decision maker, and I have that privilege
- 1:33:31Speaker 5: in many areas, the one you need the most work
- 1:33:35Speaker 5: on is in the mirror. That's the cat right there
- 1:33:39Speaker 5: that you need to get right. And you need to
- 1:33:41Speaker 5: be honest with yourself. And you need to say, how
- 1:33:45Speaker 5: much are you making that decision or, dare I say,
- 1:33:50Speaker 5: influencing that decision? Because sometimes people are just background noise
- 1:33:56Speaker 5: and you're just making the decision. Sometimes you're literally looking
- 1:34:01Speaker 5: for the direction to go and you're making decisions between
- 1:34:05Speaker 5: two or three different opinions. How much are you using
- 1:34:08Speaker 5: all of that staff and all of that information? Is
- 1:34:12Speaker 5: it just a total process of what you call natural?
- 1:34:17Speaker 5: If you catch yourself on the wrong end of a
- 1:34:20Speaker 5: couple of decisions, you really have to go back to
- 1:34:23Speaker 5: the mirror. And I'll assure you, Shadi or any of
- 1:34:27Speaker 5: his delegations there are going back to that mirror. That's
- 1:34:32Speaker 5: the culprit in the mirror.
- 1:34:34Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: But do you sit in on the meetings?
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: He didn't really answer the question. Jerry's really good at
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: that sometimes. And then one more from Jerry. The trade
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: market always comes up. He just made a deal to
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: get Joey Porter Jr. in there.
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: They've made other deals.
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: What exactly would it take for him to go back
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: into the trade market this season?
- 1:34:58Speaker 5: Well, I think the door is always open to get better.
- 1:35:03Speaker 5: I know that's almost a cliché. But if the right,
- 1:35:09Speaker 5: I'm never shut down from trying to get something that
- 1:35:17Speaker 5: would really advance the needle, especially one that could do
- 1:35:20Speaker 5: it now and into the future. And, again, I said
- 1:35:25Speaker 5: at the start of training camp, I'm willing to put
- 1:35:29Speaker 5: some things out there that are for today, lean more
- 1:35:34Speaker 5: today than they would be three years from now. Well,
- 1:35:37Speaker 5: that's the future we're talking about. So I'm open. We're open.
- 1:35:41Speaker 5: We've got a trade deadline coming up when you can
- 1:35:43Speaker 5: do some things. Let's see what happens. You obviously see
- 1:35:48Speaker 5: that we're in a transition period. to some degree, in
- 1:35:53Speaker 5: the club. But the transition is so that we can
- 1:35:58Speaker 5: win now as opposed to the transition addressing totally two
- 1:36:03Speaker 5: or three years from now. Now, that's a mouthful, and
- 1:36:07Speaker 5: it is obviously almost a dream to be able to
- 1:36:12Speaker 5: address now and improve as well as really put it
- 1:36:16Speaker 5: in place for the future.
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: Jerry's always good at saying a mouthful.
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: He is.
- 1:36:21Speaker 4: How do you like your salad?
- 1:36:22Speaker 11: Words.
- 1:36:23Speaker 3: Salad.
- 1:36:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: He's good at it. He's always been good at it
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: as well. I will say this. You know, if they
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: win tonight, they.
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: Climb back above the 500 mark, which wasn't looking real
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: promising after the sluggish start. But now they have a
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: chance to get to three and two and not only
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: be three and two, You know, they'd be no worse
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: than a game out of first if the Giants win.
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: And let me just check the NFL schedule on that.
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: Because the Eagles, as we know, are 2-2. And so
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: the best that they can be is 3-2.
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: If they do that.
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: So this weekend, with the Cowboys playing the Thursday night game,
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: a win gets them to 3-2. The New York football
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: Giants are playing your Washington Commanders this week, Jake.
- 1:37:31Speaker 4: Jayden Daniels, back in the mix.
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: He's going to be back, right? Yeah.
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: Katron Allen is not. Six-round pick. They cut him today. Okay.
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: It's going to be interesting to see if the Giants
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: get to 4-1 as they play in that game.
- 1:37:44Speaker 3: You know how much Vegas likes the Giants as a
- 1:37:47Speaker 3: 3-1 team? How about underdogs against 1-3 Washington? Three and
- 1:37:51Speaker 3: a half points.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: Eagles play at Jacksonville, and that's a crucial game for
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: them given the fact that Jacksonville's played pretty well.
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: And we know about the Texans, how the path has
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: been so difficult. Put it this way.
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: I can see them winning this Sunday in Nashville, but
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: if they don't beat the Titans and they go to 0-5...
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: There could be changes.
- 1:38:15Speaker 4: I mean, I'd be shocked. I'd be shocked.
- 1:38:19Speaker 3: That would be one of the most– because at that point,
- 1:38:22Speaker 3: they're probably going to miss the playoffs.
- 1:38:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:38:24Speaker 3: That would be one of the most underachieving teams that
- 1:38:28Speaker 3: was supposed to do big things. and and just the
- 1:38:30Speaker 3: way that it would have happened is surprising we don't
- 1:38:33Speaker 3: know what's going to happen this sunday but the way
- 1:38:35Speaker 3: that they're open for i mean you can put three
- 1:38:37Speaker 3: of those four losses squarely on the defense.
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: Yep yeah so we'll see how that works out as
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: well and by the way you'll be able to hear
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: that game Sunday at noon right here on the zone.
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: The Texans against the Titans. This is where you catch
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: Texans action. The Cowboys on 98.1 FM. KVET, 6 o'clock.
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: So the airtime just a little over an hour from now.
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: And the kickoff just past 7.
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: From Jerry World.
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: By the way, we have breaking news here. I don't
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: know if you knew this, Jake. Cameron Parker is lifting
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: his blackout.
- 1:39:14Speaker 4: Wow, okay, so he's back in.
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: No, didn't say that.
- 1:39:18Speaker 4: Okay, I've said that. I've speculated that.
- 1:39:20Speaker 2: No, he's going to watch the Cowboys.
- 1:39:24Speaker 5: Why?
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: Because he's going to the game.
- 1:39:26Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: And it's Cameron's first ever Cowboys game at Jerry World.
- 1:39:34Speaker 4: Wow, okay.
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: He went to one game at Texas Stadium, he said
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: like 2003, and he barely remembers.
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: He was like six years old.
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: So he is going to go to Jerry World for
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: the first time to see a Cowboys game. He's been
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: there for high school state championships, but it'll be the
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: first time he's ever been for a Cowboys game.
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: So he said, yeah, I'm going to watch the game.
- 1:39:52Speaker 3: I forgot about the blackout. Part of me doesn't believe
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: that he's really blacking out the Cowboys. I think he's
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: seeing his highlights in small doses. Well, he does see that.
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: He said when he's gone to people's houses, they might
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: have the game on, whatever. But he doesn't sit down
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: and watch.
- 1:40:04Speaker 4: What's he going to do?
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: Go in the other room?
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: Oh, I'm just going to get some, you know, get
- 1:40:07Speaker 3: something to.
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: Drink over here.
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: He doesn't pay that much attention to it, he says.
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: He will tonight. He's going to the game. So we'll
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: ask him about it tomorrow when we have the Red
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: River Roundtable, Red River Rivalry Roundtable there at Bar W.
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: program on 13 Under the Zone.
