- 0:00Hi everybody and welcome back to another episode of the Elon Musk
- 0:04Podcast. Today we have an absolutely
- 0:06fascinating story that touches upon our unending quest to
- 0:10understand the universe and our place in it.
- 0:13It's about NASA's 7 year mission, Osiris Rex to the
- 0:17asteroid Benu, and the bounty of scientific treasures.
- 0:21It is brought back to our Earth now, the mission recently
- 0:24concluded, revealing some unexpected finds that could
- 0:27reshape our understanding of planetary sciences.
- 0:30And it also opens up a world of possibilities for future space
- 0:34exploration. Astronomers and scientists are
- 0:37exhilarated over the initial results coming out of the Osiris
- 0:41Rex mission. The spacecraft voyage to Bennu
- 0:44culminated in September, when a capsule carrying rock samples
- 0:48and space dust safely landed in the Utah desert.
- 0:52The samples are already showing compelling findings, offering
- 0:55hints to some of the biggest questions in science.
- 0:57How did Earth become a water planet?
- 1:01What are the resources available on rich asteroids like Bennu?
- 1:04And what does this mean for the future of space missions now?
- 1:08Interestingly, the Osiris Rex mission has uncovered a lot more
- 1:11material than anticipated. Upon opening the external
- 1:14container, scientists found samples that had actually leaked
- 1:18out. This happy accident allowed for
- 1:21a quick preliminary analysis which revealed some intriguing
- 1:25discoveries. The asteroid bits included water
- 1:28logged clay minerals that could explain Earth's water origins.
- 1:32Asteroids similar to Bennu may have crashed into Earth long
- 1:35ago, filling our oceans in making our planet habitable.
- 1:40Now, in addition to this, scientists found sulfur and
- 1:43magnetite in the samples. These elements are critical for
- 1:46many geological transformations and may have played a central
- 1:50role in the origin of life on Earth.
- 1:52The asteroid is also rich in carbon, the key element in the
- 1:55building blocks for life. So it appears that Osiris Rex
- 1:59didn't just bring back rocks, it brought back a scientific
- 2:03treasure trove that will keep researchers busy for years to
- 2:06come. A great thing about the Bennu
- 2:09mission is its multiple dimensions.
- 2:11NASA and various corporations have their eyes set on asteroid
- 2:14mining as a way to propel human exploration further into the
- 2:17solar system. In understanding, Bennu will
- 2:19help to identify what resources exist on similar asteroids.
- 2:23More importantly, we'll also offer insights into how
- 2:26challenging it would be to harvest and process these
- 2:29resources for fuel and other uses.
- 2:32There are high stakes involved in the economics and logistics
- 2:35of space mining. For example, could we use the
- 2:38carbon founded Bennu for constructing habitats or energy
- 2:41generation in space? Could sulfur be used in some
- 2:44chemical processes or power generation?
- 2:46And if so, would this radically alter the cost dynamics of human
- 2:51sediments on other planets or other moons?
- 2:54And moreover, understanding that mechanical properties of
- 2:57asteroids like Bennu could influence the design and
- 2:59functionality of mining robots in the future?
- 3:02The Osiris Rex mission provides invaluable data about the
- 3:05composition, density, and structural integrity of
- 3:08asteroidal material, which would be useful for future space
- 3:12mining operations. What's also compelling is that
- 3:15the Osiris Rex mission it doesn't just stand alone.
- 3:18Japanese space missions have also returned samples from other
- 3:21asteroids, although in smaller quantities.
- 3:24Comparing samples from different missions could provide a fuller
- 3:26picture of the variety and distribution of resources in the
- 3:29asteroid belt, enabling a more comprehensive strategy for space
- 3:34resource exploitation. Now the mission to Bennu isn't
- 3:37only about understanding our origins or fueling the future
- 3:40space voyages. It's also about planetary
- 3:43defense now. Bennu falls under a small
- 3:46category of asteroids with orbits that might intersect with
- 3:49Earth's. According to scientific
- 3:51calculations, there's a one in 2700 chance that Bennu could
- 3:55collide with Earth by September 2182.
- 3:59While not a planet killer like the one that eradicated the
- 4:02dinosaurs, Bennu is large enough to destroy several cities or
- 4:06generate massive tsunamis. Now understanding the nature and
- 4:09trajectory of asteroids like Bennu helps to develop
- 4:12strategies to alter the past of potential Earth impacting
- 4:15objects. Scientists could use the
- 4:17insights gleaned from the mission to devise methods of
- 4:20changing an asteroids orbit, employing taxes such as kinetic
- 4:24impactors or gravity tractors to the end.
- 4:28Studying Bennu becomes a form of proactive defense.
- 4:31By grasping the properties of this asteroid, humanity can
- 4:35better prepare to deflect similar objects that may be on a
- 4:37collision course with Earth in the future.
- 4:40This kind of knowledge, combined with international cooperation,
- 4:43could provide a shield against asteroidal threats, making the
- 4:47planet a little safer for future generations.
- 4:50And in the time when bad news seems to dominate the headlines
- 4:53of Cyrus, sex mission offers a very positive narrative.
- 4:57NASA has collaborated closely with space agencies in Japan and
- 5:00Canada, along with scientists from dozens of countries around
- 5:04the world. This is a testament to how
- 5:06missions of cosmic curiosity can bring humanity together, uniting
- 5:10us in a common quest for knowledge rather than pulling us
- 5:13apart. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson
- 5:15encapsulated the sentiment when he rhetorically asked why are we
- 5:19doing this? His answer was pretty
- 5:21straightforward, though, he said, because at NASA we're
- 5:24trying to find out who we are, what we are, where we came from,
- 5:28and what our place is in this vastness we call the universe.
- 5:32And such collaborations extend beyond mere scientific
- 5:34endeavors. They serve as proof the
- 5:36international cooperation can produce outcomes that benefit
- 5:40everybody involved. It fosters a sense of global
- 5:42unity, revealing that when humans work together toward a
- 5:45common objective, extraordinary things can be accomplished.
- 5:49So what's next? The samples from Bennu will
- 5:51continue to be analyzed for years, offering continuous
- 5:54revelations about our solar system, Earth's origins, and the
- 5:57possibility for space explorations in the future.
