- 0:00It's been centuries since Noah and we now have these false
- 0:05Egyptian practices across Mesopotamia and the ancient
- 0:09world, and we are having human sacrifices.
- 0:13And as Abraham describes his own experience, he says, before me
- 0:18there were three virgins at one time who were daughters of
- 0:22Oneida, one of the royal descendants who's from the
- 0:25direct loins of Ham. The family relationship between
- 0:29Abraham and Sarai is a little bit different because one says
- 0:34she's his half sister, same father Tara, different mother.
- 0:38Another suggests that she is his niece.
- 0:42Well, as we continue reading in Abraham, it sounds like hello,
- 0:50welcome back to Scripture Central.
- 0:52I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson, part of the team that tries to build
- 0:56enduring faith in Jesus Christ by illuminating and defending
- 1:00the Scriptures. And I'm thrilled to be able to
- 1:02be talking about the Old Testament is specifically the
- 1:05women on handmaidens, harems, and heroines.
- 1:08And we've got a fabulous heroine today in our second week on
- 1:12Sarai or Sarah Abraham's wife, we're going to talk about the
- 1:16Egyptian maidservants from Genesis 12 to 17.
- 1:20And we get to be introduced to Hagar.
- 1:22So we're in the Middle Bronze Age.
- 1:24Go back in history to about 2000 BC up to about 1800 BC, and you
- 1:30are in the right place. I want to start in the book of
- 1:33Abraham, you know, this is a tragic period of time when false
- 1:39traditions have come. It's been centuries since Noah
- 1:43and we now have these false Egyptian practices across
- 1:48Mesopotamia and the ancient world and we are having human
- 1:52sacrifices and is. Abraham describes his own
- 1:56experience on the altar. He says before me there were
- 2:01three virgins at one time who were daughters of Oneida, one of
- 2:06the royal descendants who was from the direct loins of Ham.
- 2:10And these daughters, these young women gave up their lives.
- 2:13Now remember the royal lines of Ham is through the righteous
- 2:17line. Ham and Zepta or sometimes
- 2:19called Egyptus were married. They were on the ark.
- 2:23Ham is the youngest son of Noah and their daughter Egyptus is
- 2:27the one who discovers Egypt and their son Pharaoh or her son
- 2:32Pharaoh becomes a righteous leader.
- 2:35And they don't have the priesthood that goes through the
- 2:37lines of Shem, but they want to follow the laws of God.
- 2:42And so they organize their country after that same
- 2:45practice. But it's been 800 years, a lot
- 2:48of wickedness has come in. And in first Abraham verse 11,
- 2:53it says because of their virtue, they would not bow down to
- 2:58worship gods of wood or stone. Now these are are young women
- 3:04who are monotheistic. It's a tragic example of the
- 3:08depravity of the people, but it is a fabulous example of these
- 3:13young women who are not only willing to stand for what they
- 3:18believe, but they are willing to die for what they believe.
- 3:23Sometimes I think it's harder to live for what you believe, but
- 3:25in their case, their very lives were given.
- 3:28These are some of our first martyrs.
- 3:31I also want to remind you that when it says a virgin, this
- 3:34means a young girl who has not been married, and in the ancient
- 3:37world, marriages often took place as soon as a girl could
- 3:42procreate. That means these girls are in
- 3:44their very very early teens. These are 11/12/13 year olds,
- 3:51maybe 14 at most, but these are very young girls.
- 3:55Probably we'll find out in heaven for the exact
- 3:58information, but just just tragic as we now move on to the
- 4:03next female. In this week's lessons, we go
- 4:06back to Genesis 12 and look at some of the writings on Sarai,
- 4:11Abraham's wife. And in this section for this
- 4:14week, she's 54 years old up to age 89.
- 4:18And we have so many wonderful writings on Sarai that will just
- 4:22touch on her details from this period of time.
- 4:25Remember, she's closely related to Abraham.
- 4:28The family relationship between Abraham and Sarai is a little
- 4:32bit different because each text states it differently.
- 4:35One says she's his half sister, same father Tara, different
- 4:40mother. Another suggests that she is his
- 4:43niece and in the ancient world, whether you were the daughter of
- 4:48or the granddaughter, sometimes the father and the mother
- 4:50claimed you as theirs. So we aren't exactly sure on the
- 4:54relationship if if it's first generation or second generation
- 4:57way, but we know they are very tightly connected.
- 5:01They are very deeply committed to each other and they have a
- 5:05remarkable relationship for the ancient world.
- 5:08In Genesis chapter 12, we learn there's another famine in the
- 5:12land. And by verse 10, as Abram and
- 5:15Sarai and their huge group of people have to head South, they
- 5:19cannot say in Canaan as they're leaving from Harrim and they go
- 5:22all the way down to his growing household S into Egypt where
- 5:27there is food. And in verse 15, he describes
- 5:31that not only is he going with his family and he's also
- 5:33bringing his nephew Lot and his family, but he says we brought
- 5:37not only our substance, but the souls that we had won in Heron.
- 5:42What does that mean? This is Abraham 2 verse 15.
- 5:45Who are these souls they had won?
- 5:48Well, as we continue reading in Abraham, it sounds like there
- 5:53are many people who chose to worship the God of Abraham and
- 5:58he has a whole community with him.
- 5:59It's about the size of a ward, I think maybe a large ward because
- 6:02he has 316 people who are young enough to go fight who are male.
- 6:07So we assume that we have over 600 people that are with him.
- 6:11Now as Abraham head South, he's a little bit worried about the
- 6:15customs of the Egyptians and that life is a little cheaper.
- 6:19And so the Lord commanded him. Now in Genesis it just says they
- 6:22talked about it. But in the Book of Abraham
- 6:25chapter 2 verse 23 and 24, it said the Lord commanded Abraham,
- 6:29Let Sarai or Sarah, let her say unto the Egyptians, she is thy
- 6:35sister, and thy soul shall live. So he's received revelation to
- 6:40use part of the truth, but not the whole truth.
- 6:43They're related, but it's going to be presented that way rather
- 6:46than at their marriage covenant. Now interestingly, God commanded
- 6:50Sarai to speak to the Egyptians, not Abram.
- 6:54Now in the ancient culture, women usually did not speak out.
- 6:57So this is really wonderful that we see God's examples here and
- 7:01Abraham's willing to follow it as well.
- 7:04We learned that Sarai was a praying woman.
- 7:06We learned that she receives divine direction.
- 7:09In fact, Isaiah later, you know generations later in Isaiah 51
- 7:14says that Sarai was his example of righteousness.
- 7:19He says hearken unto me, O ye that follow after righteousness,
- 7:22and look unto Sarah that bear you.
- 7:24You know, she is their example in chapter 51, verse one and
- 7:28two, and that very chapter happens to be repeated in the
- 7:31Book of Mormon in Second Nephi chapter 8.
- 7:34So it's something that was important to also Lehi and Nephi
- 7:37and their posterity. But Abraham and Sarai discuss
- 7:41this conversation. I just don't want you to miss
- 7:43this fact that as Abrams is telling Sarai about this
- 7:47revelation that he received, he told Sarai, my wife, all that
- 7:51God had said unto me. That's verse 25, and I see as I
- 7:56continue reading, especially in the restored Scripture, this
- 7:59same pattern where this couple is discussing important matters
- 8:04in their marriage. And that may seem common to you,
- 8:08but in the ancient world this is very unusual.
- 8:11I also wanted to point out that Sarai or Sarah is used in the
- 8:15New Testament at least three different times as a positive
- 8:18example. I already mentioned Isaiah, but
- 8:21she's also a prototype for the Baron Elizabeth the Priestess
- 8:27and for our wonderful Virgin Mary.
- 8:31We also have Apostle Peter talking about to the female
- 8:33Saints and they he says you are daughters if you do what's
- 8:37right, daughters of Sarah, and he says don't give way to fear.
- 8:41I thought that was interesting that Sarah was his example of
- 8:44not being fearful in chapter 3, verse 6.
- 8:49And then in the book of Hebrews, Sarah's faith is our wonderful
- 8:52example. This is Hebrews 11/11 Through
- 8:55faith. Also Sarah herself received
- 8:58strength to conceive seed. So we not only have restored
- 9:03scripture to look at Sarah or Sarai at this time, we also have
- 9:08the New Testament. And I'm very grateful for Isaiah
- 9:12and Peter and Paul's writings or whoever wrote Hebrews on this.
- 9:17But let's get back to the text in Genesis.
- 9:19Genesis 12 sounds as if Abram wants to sell Sarah's for his
- 9:26safety. I mean, it's, it doesn't sound
- 9:28right at all. And in fact, it happens again in
- 9:30chapter 20 next week because Sarai is poisoning as Abraham's
- 9:36sister twice. But because we have the other
- 9:39text, I just want to step back and say we do not have the whole
- 9:43picture. That is not what's happening.
- 9:45I'm so grateful for the Book of Abraham and also for the Dead
- 9:48Sea Scrolls. Now the Dead Sea Scrolls section
- 9:51on this story speaks of the beauty of the biblical Sarai.
- 9:57And then it goes on in one of the scrolls to say the
- 10:00punishments and plagues were given to the Pharaoh and his
- 10:04household and quote all the healers of Egypt, UN quote.
- 10:09They couldn't solve this problem.
- 10:11They didn't know why Pharaoh and all his people were were being
- 10:14plagued until they realized that Sarai was Abram's wife.
- 10:20And so the Pharaoh asks Abram, would you please pray for me?
- 10:25And so we learn that Abraham placed his hands upon Pharaohs
- 10:29heads, and afterward his household was able to recover
- 10:33his palace. All the women were able to bear
- 10:36again, and as gratitude for this, Pharaoh gave Abraham
- 10:41sheep, an oxen. This is Genesis 1216.
- 10:44Asses, menservants, maidservants, and camels.
- 10:48And they all return back again to the area where he's from.
- 10:52Now I was a little surprised about this menservants,
- 10:55maidservants things, but I have to remind you that in the
- 10:59ancient world, especially in the Hebrew language as well as Greek
- 11:02from the New Testament, the word servant and slave are this the
- 11:05same word. And because I trust that Abraham
- 11:10is a man of God, because I trust he is a prophet, I do not think
- 11:14he is abusing these people. I also want to remind you that
- 11:18in the New Testament the Lord does not get rid of servitude.
- 11:21So I don't want to look at this as if it were slavery in our day
- 11:26and age, or slavery in early Americana, or slavery and the
- 11:30horrific aspects of it throughout the history of the
- 11:32world. I believe these people are
- 11:35absorbed into the community. I think they're living a sort of
- 11:38a law of consecration, from what the best I can read out of this
- 11:41text is. And the men, women, and children
- 11:44are working together to make this community work.
- 11:47And I admire that they are able to come and change and be
- 11:52converted and work. The next section I'd like to
- 11:55talk about is with Hagar. Now, at this point, Surai is 75
- 12:00years old, and she's been working with Hagar now for at
- 12:03least a decade or so. We aren't given the exact dates
- 12:06from when they leave Egypt, but we know that Sarai is beyond the
- 12:11ability to bear children. And so she goes back to the way
- 12:15that they did it in that day and age, and she wants to have a
- 12:18child through a surrogate mother.
- 12:21And so she goes to Abram and asks if he would bear children
- 12:25through her maid. Now this is how it says it in
- 12:29Genesis. But as we compare this to
- 12:31Abraham chapter 2, verse two and four and 15 and 22 and 25, and
- 12:37we also look at section 132 verse 65, we realize that the
- 12:42Lord is calling this the law of Sarah and it is through His
- 12:48command and His direction. I don't know all the insurance
- 12:52and outs. It's complicated, it's
- 12:54difficult. But this sweet relationship that
- 12:57Sarah trusted Hagar, that Abraham trusted Sarah, and that
- 13:02they were willing to do something very uncomfortable and
- 13:06very difficult, but it was part of the culture at the time in
- 13:10order to try to fulfill God's command.
- 13:14They had already been promised seed for a long time and Abraham
- 13:18does not want to take on another wife, but he will take on a
- 13:22surrogate because Sarah has asked for it.
- 13:26However, once Hagar conceives, as you well remember from the
- 13:31text, their relationships change dramatically and in fact, this
- 13:37servant girl becomes very proud and slight.
- 13:40Sarai who feels despised and unfortunately Sarah's hurt and
- 13:47she feels jealous and displaced and she's confused and
- 13:50frustrated and and this heart full of emotion blurts out and
- 13:56who does she blame but her, her husband.
- 13:59She blames Abraham. And I'm going to read from the
- 14:01NIV translation of Genesis chapter 16, verse five.
- 14:05You are responsible for the wrong.
- 14:08I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms.
- 14:12And now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me.
- 14:18May the Lord judge between you and me.
- 14:21And the most amazing thing for me about this is that Abraham
- 14:25does not respond defensively. He is humble and meek and he
- 14:31demonstrates his love for Sarai and he trusts her and he he
- 14:35empowers her and he even says your slave is in your hands.
- 14:40Do with her whatsoever you think is best.
- 14:43And Sarai and Hagar both overreacted.
- 14:48You know, Sarai's upset, Hagar's upset, and it says that she
- 14:52mistreated her, she afflicted Hagar.
- 14:55And then Hagar overreacts and she runs away.
- 14:59So we're, they're both in a bad shape.
- 15:02We're we go back to the text and we learn in Genesis chapter 14
- 15:07that an Angel of the Lord comes to intervene and the Angel calms
- 15:13down Hagar and we understand that he gives her a prophecy and
- 15:19he says, go back and get to work and remember your position.
- 15:24And I just want to remind you that angels often come to
- 15:29redirect someone you know, if you're doing what's right, you
- 15:32rarely get an Angel visitation. Angels usually come to either
- 15:37turn people around or refocus them, but in this situation,
- 15:42Hagar follows the angelic direction.
- 15:46And not only does she go back, but in Genesis 16 verses 11 and
- 15:5015, it says that she shares this prophecy with Abraham with as as
- 15:57the father of the child that she's bearing.
- 16:00I want to talk for just a minute though, about this wonderful
- 16:03experience of an Angel coming and telling Hagar that not only
- 16:08is she going to go back, but that she will have a son and
- 16:12what the son is to be named and a sign and he goes on and on.
- 16:17This is a biblical Annunciation that is repeated in at least
- 16:21seven different women that are recorded.
- 16:24I don't know how any other got this experience, but there's a
- 16:28pattern that the biblical enunciations follow.
- 16:32Almost all of them begin with an appearance by an Angel of the
- 16:36Lord, and then the person in great fear prostrates themself.
- 16:43Then there's a divine message given.
- 16:44The Angel often calls them by name.
- 16:47The Angel often urges them to not be afraid.
- 16:50The the then the Angel tells the woman that or the man that they
- 16:54will have a a male child. They give the name of the child.
- 16:59The Angel or the divine personage often gives the
- 17:02etymology of the name of the child.
- 17:05Why this child is to hold this name?
- 17:07And then the 4th step is an objection by the visionary and
- 17:15they usually request a sign and then a sign is usually given to
- 17:18the person receiving this. Now this Hagar is our first one
- 17:23to have it, but we see it in the next chapter in Sarah or in
- 17:27Sarai, as also in Rebecca. We see it in Manoa's wife.
- 17:31We see it in Hannah and Elizabeth and Mary, but the time
- 17:35period between Hagar and Sarai is is 12 years.
- 17:39And I assume that Sarai knew about Hagar's experience and
- 17:45it's, it's very precious to me. But by the time Hagar delivers
- 17:51her child, the relationship is healed enough that for over a
- 17:55decade they're living peaceably together and the two women are
- 18:01back In Sync. At least the best they could.
- 18:04I'm sure it was very difficult, but they all love to this child,
- 18:09this little Ishmael. But when Sarah is 89 years old
- 18:14and Abraham is 99, do you remember the three visitors
- 18:17come? The three visitors are angelic
- 18:19beings of some sort of translated beings.
- 18:22I personally think they're translated because they eat and
- 18:25I don't think you could do that if you're pre mortal or post
- 18:28mortal because there's no resurrected beings yet until
- 18:31after the Lord's, the savior of the earth's resurrection.
- 18:35So as we look at Genesis chapter 17, verse 15, these three
- 18:40visitors come to Abram and give him prophecies and they change
- 18:46their names. Abram receives a new name, now
- 18:50father of many nations, and Sarai, my Princess, receives a
- 18:54new name of a grander Princess or a woman of strength.
- 18:58There's two or three different definitions of what Sarah means,
- 19:03but there's a prophecy given, and Sarah, in addition to
- 19:07receiving a new name, is told. I will bless her, and I will
- 19:11give thee a son also of her. Yeah, I will bless her, and she
- 19:16shall be the mother of nations. Kings of people shall be of her.
- 19:22That's verse 15 and 16 in chapter 17, and that's where our
- 19:26readings end this week. That's where the Lord is able to
- 19:31move forward and begin the fulfillment of this prophecy
- 19:36that for decades they have been looking forward to.
- 19:40The timing of the Lord is always part of the miracle, and I hope
- 19:45and pray in your lives as you are striving to live worthy of
- 19:49the blessings that the Lord has given you, that we, like Sarai,
- 19:54like Abram, can be patient for the day when the Lord can
- 19:59fulfill all those promises. And whether they're on this side
- 20:03of the veil or the other, I can trust in God.
- 20:07I know His ways are just, and I know He is the God of not only
- 20:13the Old Testament. But now and we have a prophet in
- 20:16the land now. I am so grateful for this
- 20:19witness through the Spirit of God.
- 20:21And pray in your scripture study today that you can draw closer
- 20:26to the Lord in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
