- 0:31program. We will start with Tom Caker to
- 0:34some Hawkeye conversation with Caker about 1225.
- 0:38Had a request to ask about Emily Rodriguez, who apparently is
- 0:41visiting the Iowa women's program, see if there's any
- 0:44traction in that department. So Tom should be on top of that.
- 0:47We'll talk to him about that and other stuff coming up here at
- 0:5012:25, we'll give 4 of you an opportunity to win some grub
- 0:54from the chicken coop. The winner will get $50.00 to

- 1:08whether you won or not 30 days. If you've played, you can't and
- 1:12Commissioner Condon will Chuck you out.
- 1:15Our number 2 will head to Las Vegas.
- 1:16Started off with Mike Palm, VP of operations at Circa Sports.
- 1:20One week from today, the contests open up.
- 1:23You can enter the contest, Survivor and Circa Millions.
- 1:26I don't think we'll get any Intel as perhaps some of the
- 1:29changes this week. They're keeping it pretty tight
- 1:31to the vest, but we'll talk to Mike Palm about that and the
- 1:34just the fact that the schedule maker did the contest no favors,
- 1:38not that they had that in the back of their mind when they
- 1:40were coming up with the schedule for the final couple of weeks of
- 1:43the regular season. Bill Seals, we shortchanged
- 1:45yesterday on time. Going to get him back in here to
- 1:47finish his thoughts on Iowa State from this past week.
- 1:50Wendy Weinstein in the news today, president of Iowa State.
- 1:53She is retiring in 2026 and by all accounts from where I sit, I
- 2:01don't know much about the woman other than the fact that she
- 2:03seems like she's pretty favorable to the sports programs
- 2:07and that's not always the case with school presidents.
- 2:10But I would stay again, seemingly had one that was in
- 2:14Sports Corner. If you will, what you're always
- 2:17hoping for is obviously somebody that a school president that
- 2:20embraces athletics, that's celebrates, supports, does all
- 2:23the things that you want. At worst, you want somebody
- 2:26neutral, and then there's the worst to worst a guy like Hunter
- 2:29Rawlings and do you Now I. Don't know him.
- 2:32So this was right as you were moving to the states.
- 2:35He was the school president of Iowa in the late 80s into the
- 2:38early 90s. He wanted the Big 10 to turn
- 2:40into the Ivy League. Did he really and he wanted
- 2:43athletics deemphasize and there are many people believe the
- 2:46halcyon days of Iowa athletics were many are the 1980s.
- 2:50Many people believe that the beginning of things taking at
- 2:55least a step back as an athletic department was because of the
- 2:59damage that Hunter Rawlings gave to the university and most
- 3:02importantly to the athletic department because of the
- 3:05rhetoric that he was using at that time.
- 3:08What? Was his background to get the
- 3:09job? Do you have any idea?
- 3:10I think. He was maybe like a Provost at
- 3:12Cornell. It was an Ivy League school that
- 3:14he was like the number 2 at an Ivy League school and.
- 3:16He thought he could transform Iowa into.
- 3:18Well, that Iowa. The Big 10.
- 3:20The Big 10 overall. Yes, it was.
- 3:22He wanted to make the Big 10 big.
- 3:24Plans. Ivy League light.
- 3:27And because he was the school president of Iowa, that's where
- 3:29he was going to do it. So here's another old story for
- 3:33you. We remember the senior year of
- 3:35BJ Armstrong, Roy Marble and Martin, that group, they also
- 3:39had an outstanding freshman on that team, an outstanding
- 3:42freshman that halfway through the season was no longer with
- 3:45them. And he was, if memory serves, he
- 3:51was eligible for NCAA and Big 10 standards.
- 3:55But I think the suspension came down because of what Iowa was
- 3:59implementing at the time. Now, again, we're going back
- 4:01high. Academic standards like they had
- 4:03a Drake back in the day. Yes, like because didn't Drake
- 4:06have something very similar to that in the early aughts?
- 4:10Well, I've, we were on the air during that time period.
- 4:13We started in 96 and that was a thing.
- 4:15I remember that. Didn't pay too much attention to
- 4:17it to be honest with you. Prior to what happened to that
- 4:21dude? Did they run him out of town?
- 4:23Yes, So he went to Tulsa. Ray Thompson, 65, solid thick,
- 4:28he averaged 11 1/2 points per game.
- 4:30So that season I think they beat beat somebody good that year.
- 4:33But yeah, he was part of the squad, wasn't able to play.
- 4:37And after two years he departed and went to Tulsa and had a nice
- 4:40career there. But he was averaging 11 1/2
- 4:42points per game as a freshman playing with five NBA players.
- 4:47Roy Marble, Ed Horton, BJ Armstrong, Matt Bullard, Les
- 4:51Jepsen. We're all on that team.
- 4:53And he was the Bells. North Dakota.
- 4:55Well, that had more points than Matt Bullard, James Moses, Wade
- 4:59Lookingbill as a junior on that squad.
- 5:01There's a blast for the past. So Lookingbill would have been
- 5:05at at Iowa when this guy is running the shop perhaps?
- 5:08So where did he go? Where did oh Hunter?
- 5:11Rawlings, yes. I think he went back to, again,
- 5:16we're talking a long time ago. My memory is I think he went
- 5:19back to an Ivy League school. I think Cornell, for whatever
- 5:22reason, is sticking in my mind. Yeah.
- 5:24That's I've never heard of him until right now.
- 5:25Really. Yeah, never heard of him.
- 5:27Hunter Rawlings Yeah. Cornell University.
- 5:30He was the office and that was this president.
- 5:32Is he dead? He's still with us, 80 years
- 5:36old. Let's see running through his
- 5:38resume now as Mary Sue Coleman took over for him.
- 5:41She was the school president. Whenever I remember.
- 5:44Yes, and she was neutral. Yeah, I think so, yeah.
- 5:47I think a neutral for a big athletic.
- 5:49Department. Is she in where?
- 5:50Michigan? Yes, that's where she went after
- 5:52Iowa. Yeah.
- 5:53He was at the University of Iowa from 87 to 95, and then he went
- 5:57to Cornell after that. See, I've had that right about.
- 6:01That memory to you, we'll give it to you.
- 6:03They think that's how we're starting off.
- 6:04No, I didn't either. Some guy never heard of PGA.
- 6:08Take a look at the leaderboard speaking a bunch of guys never
- 6:10heard of it is not the shiniest leaderboards.
- 6:13Now obviously it's going to change.
- 6:15One would assume one would hope between now and maybe tomorrow
- 6:19as some of the guys are still getting underway.
- 6:21Some of the big names. Bryson Dechambeau is trying to
- 6:24make a run up the leaderboard. He started it even he's 3 under
- 6:27the leader. Johnny Vegas is 9 under
- 6:30currently, 9 under for Vegas. And then again, and while Max
- 6:34Home is on in the hunts and Luke Donald.
- 6:36But for the most part, you're not going to go out of your way
- 6:39because this is appointment TV. And when I saw that the game
- 6:43seven of the Western Conference final was at 2:30 in the
- 6:46afternoon, I was kind of disappointed because that's
- 6:48right in the middle of the, you know, final few holes of the
- 6:50PGA. But if the leaderboards like
- 6:52this, I'm sorry. I'm watching hoops.
- 6:54And you're not going to be alone.
- 6:55This is this is bad news, awful for the PGA.
- 7:00I, I just look over all like kind of this, this leaderboard,
- 7:03it's pretty rare at this point in my life that there are a half
- 7:07dozen guys well as much. As you bet golf, you don't miss
- 7:10a week. I didn't know these guys for the
- 7:12most part, not this group though of stiffs.
- 7:15They're not stiffs this week, but this is this is bad.
- 7:20You look at the cut line projected right now it's.
- 7:22Over 1? Is it 2?
- 7:23Now it was two. Yeah, or at least a moment ago.
- 7:25Now it's one. And the guys that would miss the
- 7:28cut, Jordan. Spieth Sep Straka, who won last
- 7:34week, Matsuyama, Jason Day, Corey Connors and a lot of
- 7:39people bet to be the top Canadian.
- 7:40Ludwig Aubert, Justin Thomas, Sanjay M That's a pretty Patrick
- 7:47Reed. Nobody cares, but it's Patrick
- 7:48Reed. Brooks Kepka.
- 7:50Rory. No, just did I pass him.
- 7:53There he is. He's on the list, isn't he?
- 7:55He hasn't started his round yet, has he?
- 7:57He has not. He'll.
- 7:59Tee off here in about 40 minutes.
- 8:01But to your point, some of the guys we saw, it would be, you
- 8:05know, this would be flip-flopped, that the guys we
- 8:07just named would be missing the cut and these guys would be in
- 8:10Will Zaltoris, another one having a struggle so far.
- 8:13So Will Maxima is a guy that kind of beloved he was.
- 8:17Yeah, he's more for his personality than his game,
- 8:20right? Absolutely.
- 8:21He can't play. Yeah, he was a young gun.
- 8:23It didn't completely click, but he was thought of.
- 8:26He was going to be in that group with, you know, JT and that kind
- 8:28of guys and it just, it didn't quite get there.
- 8:32But he's not a guy that can carry the weekend.
- 8:34No, if he was up there in contention and wins a PGA with
- 8:37the big leaderboard that, But he's not going to drive
- 8:40television. This is already the fourth
- 8:42major, but I mean, I'm really looking at saying give me The
- 8:45Players Championship over this. This is bad this.
- 8:47Has been this year, that's for sure.
- 8:50We'll see where it goes. But I I'm with you.
- 8:52It's it's just it's disappointing so far.
- 8:55But again, we've got a lot of golf to play and we'll see if
- 8:58things change. Hopefully that they will.
- 9:00One of those questions is we do each when it comes to all of the
- 9:03majors will in America win the major this week this this major
- 9:08championship. So that'll be part of the
- 9:10chicken coop before we get get into the basketball from last
- 9:15night. Touch on the hockey a little
- 9:16bit. One series over one series moves
- 9:18on to a Game 6 baseball. Benjamin were referring to him
- 9:22now. What's up, Benny?
- 9:25Wow, going by my full name, I must be in trouble.
- 9:31Just want to clarify, you have the right state.
- 9:33Trent Ray Thompson did go to the state of Oklahoma, but it was to
- 9:39Oral Roberts. To Oral Roberts, not Tulsa.
- 9:41Same city. Same.
- 9:43I had the city, right? I didn't say what school.
- 9:45I just said the city. No, you got.
- 9:47You got. Me, yeah, that I was 13.
- 9:50And and it wasn't just the academics that did him in.
- 9:54If you remember, you're a couple years younger than me, Trent
- 9:57wasn't he picked up outside of like the field house or one of
- 10:01those establishments and said, don't you know who I am?
- 10:06And that was kind of the beginning of the end of good old
- 10:09Ray. Ray was a hell of a player like
- 10:12that. His son, his 11, he had like 11
- 10:17on that team with studs and then he was out.
- 10:19He was like 12 or 13 his sophomore year and then he was
- 10:22jettisoned and I believe, wasn't there a Garner kid that also
- 10:26transferred to Oral Roberts with him like Brian Garner?
- 10:29Brian Gardner, yeah, super fast. Couldn't I mean, he was a
- 10:31turnover machine, but yeah, Brian Gardner, yeah, he also
- 10:34went down there with him. I'm looking Thompson was
- 10:37averaging that sophomore year and that's when he the casualty
- 10:39happened. He did play his little freshman
- 10:40year. 17/16/17 his sophomore. Year he was averaging 19 points,
- 10:455 rebounds, 2 assists. So that team, that was the first
- 10:48Doctor Tom team that missed the tournament.
- 10:51Wow. Well, because BJ and Roy and
- 10:55those guys had all graduated. So this was Ray Thompson's
- 10:58sophomore year. But before that happened, that
- 11:01was the year they went into the Dean Dome and won down.
- 11:04They had some nice victories. In fact, they started the season
- 11:07off at 7 and O that year they were ranked in the top 25.
- 11:11Thompson departed. Wheels fell off.
- 11:13Thank you, Hunter Rollins. Anything else, Benny?
- 11:17No, I'm 8th grade. I can remember like it was
- 11:19yesterday, like can tell you where I was at in 6th grade
- 11:22watching the team play him out and the Elite Eight against
- 11:26UNLV. Can Sarkanian talk to the
- 11:28officials for like 20 minutes? Didn't even have to discuss
- 11:31anything with his team, just gave the official with the ear
- 11:34full at halftime. And that game totally changed
- 11:36the second-half. But man, the, the 35 years ago,
- 11:40how how great those players were and what we what we dismantled.
- 11:44And now hopefully McCollum can turn around.
- 11:46I I can can remember Larry Larry Morgan and Mac get your chips
- 11:51and salsa boys, because we're going to have a good time on Ray
- 11:53com. I want to go back to those.
- 11:55Things. So do I hear you?
- 11:58So do I. See you, Betty.
- 11:59Good to hear from you. Yep, absolutely good stuff.
- 12:02The archives of the LA Times, which is part of the wire
- 12:05services from Let's see the date here. 1990 basketball player Ray
- 12:11Thompson, a promising sophomore who was suspended from the team
- 12:13three times for academic and legal problems, has left the
- 12:17school, it was disclosed today. Three strikes, he's finally out.
- 12:19He was out of there. The departure reported by The
- 12:21Gazette and confirmed by Doctor Tom Davis.
- 12:24So there it was three different times.
- 12:26And if you pull off the Do you know who I am?
- 12:29Yeah. Rarely works for.
- 12:31You, especially if it's the third time.
- 12:33Yeah, that not good. Julio Boy learned something
- 12:37here. They love that little history of
- 12:39the state that I call home. Anyways, basketball from last
- 12:42night. Just your thoughts on the game.
- 12:44Did you see much of it? Were you surprised that Denver
- 12:47was able to do what they did? It was, I mean, they were they
- 12:50were in the Mile High City. And Murray steps up the way he
- 12:52does. Well, he's a good playoff
- 12:54performer. He really is.
- 12:55You know, I'm never surprised when you have Yokich on the team
- 12:58and Murray. Now there was the talk of the
- 13:00and. Christian Brown was really good
- 13:02yesterday too. And that's kind of what they
- 13:03need, right? They need that.
- 13:04Somebody else? Yep.
- 13:06Because you're right, what Murray's turned into, he's like,
- 13:11he's not a top ten player, but. No, he's a piece that every team
- 13:14could use though. He's here's your number 2.
- 13:17They won a championship with it and he does it seems like he has
- 13:20that elevation that he can he can put the team on the back for
- 13:24stretches. If Jokic doesn't have ridiculous
- 13:26numbers, he can still carry you that way and he was able to do
- 13:29it. But yeah, Brown was great you.
- 13:31Know what else was Strother? Yeah, and you're about to say
- 13:34and when you have those are things that happen at home.
- 13:37But now you look at Game 7 and who's going to be the one that
- 13:39steps up but and. What's the number in game seven?
- 13:42It's pretty big. It's 7.
- 13:43It's big. Yes, it is 7 1/2. 7 1/2.
- 13:47When I look at this game seven, though, normally taking the
- 13:51point spread aside, just winning the game, you're a pretty
- 13:55significant underdog. You're going on the.
- 13:58Road. I've got veterans though.
- 13:59And that's I give them more than a punch.
- 14:02Or two for that reason. Because Jokic can win a game by
- 14:05himself, Murray can win a game. You have two different guys that
- 14:08can do it on their own, Brown. Needs to make his shots.
- 14:11To think this Strothra Brown. No, that's no, no, both of them
- 14:13are not going to have the games that they had in Game 6.
- 14:16But I also go the other way. SGA.
- 14:19I've seen moments now I I don't like his style of play.
- 14:25It goes back to conversation we had a decade ago with James
- 14:28Harden. It's jumping in for fouls.
- 14:30I hate it. I just despise that kind of
- 14:32basketball player, too. It's not entertaining.
- 14:34It's not aesthetically pleasing. He's better than that, yes, and
- 14:36he is. He's good enough to not have to
- 14:38do it and he does it. So I'm not a fan.
- 14:40What pissed me off about Aaron White?
- 14:42Yes, absolutely. You don't have to do it, but the
- 14:44guys do. A step further though, if SGA
- 14:49like the foul that he had before half time, what are you doing?
- 14:51It's just dumb fouls. Pick up your 4th foul, you have
- 14:53to sit 5 minutes in the third quarter because of just
- 14:57selfishness. A bad basketball play like that
- 15:00in a potential clinching game, that is selfish basketball.
- 15:04And after him, who steps up? There's nobody in that group.
- 15:08And that's that was my concern with OKC coming into this
- 15:10playoff. We know that Gilder's Alexander,
- 15:13he's a tremendous talent and he is incredibly good.
- 15:18That next tier though, that next group, they're all talented.
- 15:21It's it's not a talent thing, it's the reps.
- 15:24And in a big moment, you think Lou Dort's going to hit that 3.
- 15:27Then he didn't gain 5. Not no.
- 15:29He's going to guard ya. Crusoe.
- 15:31No. Williams.
- 15:34Well, let me ask it this way, Chad.
- 15:35Helgram hasn't been knocking down shots from the outside.
- 15:37Now he looks unwilling to do it. He looks a little gun shy.
- 15:41Yeah, and here comes Rudy Gobert potentially.
- 15:43Who do you? If you're AT Wolves fan, who
- 15:45would you rather play? That's a more difficult question
- 15:51than it should be. Well.
- 15:52I think the answer is you'd rather play OKC because Joker's
- 15:55not playing yeah. You beat Denver a year ago.
- 15:58In an unbelievable series where the road games played such a
- 16:04huge role. I mean, Minnesota came back to
- 16:05Minnesota up to zip. They took both games in Denver.
- 16:09They what a game seven in Denver?
- 16:12And didn't game seven in Denver? Yeah.
- 16:14Are you going to beat Denver two years in a row in a Game seven?
- 16:16I don't know that. So then you're tightening up the
- 16:18series and that's the reason going back to the first Game 7
- 16:22for the Nuggets back in the first round, I like them so much
- 16:25as I just couldn't see has. Randall got another series in
- 16:27him like this last one we just saw.
- 16:29If he does, look. Out right and you look at the
- 16:30match up, well, yeah, he had Draymond Green, who is a great
- 16:33defender. He's also a guy on the backside
- 16:35of his career, and now you're playing with some younger legs,
- 16:39some different kind of defense. And there's a lot, I think, on
- 16:42both sides of the argument. Just as a fan, I think I'd
- 16:46rather see the Thunder. I think I would too.
- 16:48Which is crazy the number one seed historically great numbers.
- 16:51Well, you're. Going on the road regardless.
- 16:53You're going on the road regardless, so maybe that is the
- 16:55deciding factor that if it was homecourt, maybe it would sway
- 16:58it. I'd just rather see OK C and if
- 17:00you would have said that be get before the.
- 17:01Series began. No, no, no, no.
- 17:02And certainly after game one, yeah, no way.
- 17:05What about tonight? Do the Knicks wrap it up or do
- 17:07we get a Game 7 and that Game 7 is not going to be until Monday?
- 17:11Which? I like.
- 17:13Well, I don't, I mean. Oh, because your jets might.
- 17:15Be it may be mean that it's we've got to go to Dallas and
- 17:19you know how that works for our goalie.
- 17:20Not very. Good.
- 17:21We can't beat at home. He literally cannot put a puck
- 17:24past. Him, he was tremendous last
- 17:25night. Again, back-to-back shutouts at
- 17:27home. What is it about?
- 17:29But what goes on between his ears?
- 17:31Trent, we know he's good. He's really, I sound like a
- 17:35broken record, I'm sorry, I do. But 4 zip last night they were
- 17:39the best team on the game, on the ice the night, the game
- 17:42before Game 4 when they got beat 31, Winnipeg got played from
- 17:45start to finish, but it was in Dallas.
- 17:47Sadly, Carnelle Buck was on the road and he's got to go on the
- 17:50road tomorrow and win. If I'm the Dallas Stars, you
- 17:53better look after business tomorrow 'cause you're not going
- 17:55to Winnipeg on Monday to win. You're not winning in that
- 17:58building. You see what that?
- 17:59Building's like it was. Great.
- 18:00It was fantastic. Smallest building in the league,
- 18:03you're right on top, top of them, Everybody's in white.
- 18:06If you've watched it, you know what it's like.
- 18:07It's crazy. The Jets will not lose Game 7.
- 18:10Now I get there. Can they get there?
- 18:12Yeah. I if I had to bet my life, I
- 18:14would say no. Because we've seen.
- 18:16It because we've seen it all playoffs long.
- 18:18Unbelievable. Boy, it's a pretty good weekend
- 18:20in baseball. Just real quick on that.
- 18:21But I I do love these rivalry weekend.
- 18:25I do. I'm looking forward to that.
- 18:26But here's what I want to end this segment with you, Caleb
- 18:28Williams, the book that's coming up about the bears quarterback.
- 18:31Yes, I think it's a big to do about nothing.
- 18:34You do I do. He didn't want to play for the
- 18:37Bears. OK, you wanted to play for KOCI,
- 18:41get it? You didn't want to play for Matt
- 18:43Heberfluss. You didn't want to play where
- 18:45quarterbacks go to die. You had all of these concerns.
- 18:48But then you got there and then you decided to yourself, you
- 18:51know what? I can, I can, I can lead this
- 18:53team. And then all of a sudden, it got
- 18:55way better when Heberfluss was shown the door and here comes
- 18:58Ben Johnson. And I believe that the rest of
- 19:00the next chapters are going to be very good chapters.
- 19:03But I wasn't. If I was a Bears fan, I wouldn't
- 19:07be up in arms about what is coming up potentially in this
- 19:12book. You are a Bears fan.
- 19:13How did you take it? I took it as this is going to
- 19:16put him on an incredibly thin ice for the here and now.
- 19:19It's a nothing burger. I agree with that.
- 19:22But after a tough loss, a quote in the post game, something that
- 19:27is said, some kind of disparaging remark, whatever.
- 19:30Good, that could be construed as a day.
- 19:32Even if it's not, now you're working on that thin ice and
- 19:37things start to go South and the negativity and just the way that
- 19:40that city can eat guys up, that is where my concern lies.
- 19:46On its own, not a big deal, but it's what still could come.
- 19:50That leaves me a little bit. What do?
- 19:51You think the consensus amongst Bears fans is when they saw
- 19:54that? I mean, how did they put their
- 19:56head on the pillow last night with a negative thought about
- 19:59their quarterback kind of in the middle?
- 20:01I don't care he's here. We're glad we got a better
- 20:04coach, got better players. I think that's it's difficult
- 20:07because all fans are wired differently like that.
- 20:09There's a significant percentage that despise him for saying
- 20:13something like that, for thinking something like that.
- 20:15There is a certain, and now every single time that he plays
- 20:19poorly, the team poor, plays poorly, they're going to use as
- 20:22his ammunition. I don't know how big of a
- 20:23percentage, but it's a portion of the fan base that's going to
- 20:26be that way. I would guess the majority look
- 20:29at it in the grand scheme of things as no big, just win,
- 20:31baby. Yeah, exactly.
- 20:32We actually have a talented quarterback.
- 20:34Let's not. He watched film repeatedly by
- 20:39himself. No coaching, nobody in the room.
- 20:43He would just be in there by himself watching TV because no
- 20:46one would come in and coach him. That's damning.
- 20:49I mean, how does Eberflues get another job?
- 20:51Well. He's not there anymore.
- 20:53That's all I can. Well, that's true.
- 20:54That's true. And I'm not sure where he's, I
- 20:56mean, can he be a head coach again?
- 20:58I will take a time out. Tom Cakert will join us on the
- 21:02other side. Let's try and send somebody into
- 21:05the weekend with $1000 in their pocket, shall we?
- 21:08Time to try and win $1000 in this nationwide contest.
- 21:12You can head to kxno.com right now.
- 21:14The keyword this hour is WIN. WIN at kxno.com.
- 21:17Your chance to win $1000. Again, the keyword is WIN.
- 21:22Another opportunity coming up at about an hour from right now.
- 21:24This contest has been sponsored by our friends at Suntan City,
- 21:28multiple locations throughout central Iowa and their greatest
- 21:32specials of the year are ongoing now at Suntan City.
- 21:37Miller and Condon underway on a Friday.
- 21:39Chicken coop this hour. We'll let you know when to call
- 21:41for that K cart next, it's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 21:53Miller and Condon, welcome back 12:30 on a Friday, Iowa Sports
- 21:57Radio Network. Trent Condon and Ken Miller with
- 22:00you until 2. Let's get to Tom Caker
- 22:02hawkeyereport.com. Tom joins us every single
- 22:05Friday. Today being no different.
- 22:07Tom Trenton. Ken, thank you for jumping on.
- 22:09How are you doing? Well, how are you guys?
- 22:12Doing well. I want to ask you this before I
- 22:13forget because I promised I would, Emily.
- 22:16Emily Rodriguez apparently took her visit yesterday.
- 22:20She's subsequently went on to Indiana, apparently, Yeah,
- 22:24whatever, I guess. Any chance she becomes a Hawking
- 22:27place for Jan Jensen? What are you hearing about the
- 22:29UCF transfer, Tom? Yeah, I think there's a chance.
- 22:33And they feel like they put their best foot forward on the
- 22:36visit and you know, she's still taking trips.
- 22:40So I think that's where we're at is you just don't know what
- 22:43else. She may take more visits after
- 22:46Indiana. So we'll see what happens.
- 22:49But I think some of these people have to start making decisions,
- 22:54right? Because they, you know, as Ben
- 22:56McCollum was talking at the high club thing out in, out in Omaha
- 23:01to Omaha and the Council Bluffs, I guess the other night, you
- 23:05know, we're going to start practicing on on or doing
- 23:08workouts and stuff on June 2nd. So best, best that you get to
- 23:13town soon. So I think some people are going
- 23:16to make decisions soon. Those decisions, I know McCullum
- 23:20talked about what June 2nd, they're going to start their
- 23:22offseason workouts and hopefully have your roster kind of put
- 23:24together at that point knowing what it's going to look like
- 23:27going forward. But for next year's class, his
- 23:29first full recruiting class, Jane Kuhn, a kid from his
- 23:32hometown to Storm Lake that he grew up, commits to create.
- 23:36Oh, did he? Pretty big.
- 23:37Glow and a guy that I know, the staff obviously was high on and
- 23:41most everybody was high on there.
- 23:43I think that was a tough one to swallow.
- 23:45Your take away from Coon going to Creighton.
- 23:48Not surprised. I had heard a couple weeks ago
- 23:52that it was basically kind of a done deal that that he was going
- 23:55to end up at at Creighton. And it you know, what it
- 23:59reminded me of is when Fran came in and Marcus Page ended up
- 24:06going to North Carolina and not saying that this kid is as good
- 24:08as Marcus Page or anything like that.
- 24:10Just kind of the similar feel new coach comes in and the dies
- 24:16already kind of cast that he's going to another the best player
- 24:21in the state quote UN quote is going to another place.
- 24:24And you know, he went up there and visited and and tried to put
- 24:30his best foot forward to him. But I think Creighton was
- 24:33already well on his mind. Tom, I read a tweet from
- 24:39yesterday, got by the name of Evan Myakawa you're familiar
- 24:42with. Him.
- 24:43Yeah, I know. Evan.
- 24:44Yeah. Evan and I correspond
- 24:47frequently. Privately.
- 24:48Gotcha. So apparently this is the how
- 24:52much teams, how much schools, men's basketball programs have
- 24:56estimated to have spent their NIL money.
- 24:58And Iowa spent the third highest amount.
- 25:01Indiana 10.1, USC 9.9 million, Iowa 9,000,000 out of Michigan,
- 25:07Kentucky, St. John's.
- 25:08Who's got an endless flow of cash?
- 25:10I can tell you. Is that true?
- 25:12No, it's it's that is an estimation of what the roster is
- 25:16worth, not what was spent. His He's Ken Pomeroy.
- 25:20He is one of the analytical guys.
- 25:23Basically this is what the roster would cost in terms of
- 25:27that. So no, this is not a strictly a
- 25:29financial thing. I was.
- 25:29Going to say I thought they were.
- 25:30I thought they were starving for money.
- 25:34Yeah, it's probably a little more than half that total based
- 25:39on what I've heard. It's still quite as junk
- 25:41compared. To where they were.
- 25:43It's still, it's still better than the 1.5 or 1.1 depending on
- 25:47who you speak with, on what they spent last year.
- 25:50So yes, they have significantly improved their investment into
- 25:55their basketball roster this year and they're still trying to
- 25:59finish it up. And, you know, McCollum told
- 26:02Chad Lice Co the other day they're trying to get one more
- 26:05that can help them. I know that.
- 26:08And people were all charged up about a couple of guys that, you
- 26:12know, including the kid that visited.
- 26:14But it's just the financial aspect of things right now.
- 26:18They're kind of hamstrung. I think they're, there's just
- 26:22not another $1,000,000 player or whatever that you can really
- 26:26throw out there right now. So they've got to adhere to a
- 26:30little bit of a budget right now and and try to make that work.
- 26:33And so they're going to find, let's find somebody that can
- 26:35help. Doesn't mean specific position.
- 26:38Obviously they'd love to get a big kid that could bang a little
- 26:41bit and go up against big 10 players.
- 26:43But if not, I know now I had Luke Barnwell, one of the
- 26:49assistants on my podcast the other day and and he's basically
- 26:53like, hey, we feel pretty good about the guys that we got and
- 26:57that, you know, a good majority of those players were part of a
- 27:01team that won 30 games, including what, like 4 or 5 or
- 27:04whatever against Power Five team, something like that.
- 27:08So I want to jump into a little football with you and we got
- 27:12camp season right around the corner.
- 27:13I will get a ton of commitments in the month of June seemingly
- 27:15every year. That's kind of the way that it
- 27:17plays out. But I want to go to the class
- 27:19that's coming in. The guys that are either already
- 27:21on campus are going to be here in a couple of weeks.
- 27:24You can't say Yosei up Anessa because that's the easy one.
- 27:27Which one of the true freshman do you think has a chance to not
- 27:30just maybe play some special teams, but maybe be a guy that
- 27:33gets past that four games and actually is out there on the
- 27:36field a little bit more? I'd always lean towards the guys
- 27:40that are already here in that case, like a, you know, like ACJ
- 27:44Bowl or somebody like that. But there's always a defensive
- 27:47back that ends up playing early on.
- 27:50And that's just sort of a thing that Phil has always done.
- 27:54And so I would, I would throw Bell out there is is a guy that
- 28:00and it's a position need right now cornerback.
- 28:03I mean, there's a reason they went out and got the the Barrows
- 28:06kid from South Dakota to add to the depth there.
- 28:08And I can see Bell coming along and working his way up the the
- 28:13depth chart a little bit and and being out there this fall.
- 28:17I read a piece Chad Lysico Speaking of Lysico caught up
- 28:21with Tim Lester. The Shanahan offense at Iowa, is
- 28:26it going to work? And apparently, I mean, he's
- 28:29somewhat of a trendsetter when it comes to that offense in the
- 28:32college game. Certainly if it if it clicks,
- 28:35more people can follow because we know everybody copies
- 28:38everybody. But your thoughts on the
- 28:39Shanahan offense working at the University of Iowa?
- 28:42What does it potentially mean, Tom?
- 28:45Yeah, and I've talked to Tim about that before because he's
- 28:47like, hey, like nobody runs this off.
- 28:50Yeah. Wonder why.
- 28:51Offense in the college game and it is odd because it is a very
- 28:56successful offense and you know, it's the Chan and offense has
- 29:00made it to the Super Bowl more than once has it won, But it's
- 29:05it's made its way there. So you one would think that they
- 29:08would that people would like to to copy it or or use some, some
- 29:12aspects of it. But I think he's pretty excited
- 29:17about what he's got now because they've got more depth at
- 29:20receiver and they've got, I think a healthy and, and
- 29:27motivated quarterback that wants to go out and prove himself to,
- 29:32to everybody. So I, I'm really interested to
- 29:35see how this, this offense comes together and provided that
- 29:38offensive line stays healthy or gets healthy or however you want
- 29:42to term it right now. But if they can get steady
- 29:46offensive line play, I I one of my bold predictions this year is
- 29:51that I was is going to average over 30 points a game.
- 29:54But that Iowa. Iowa.
- 29:56Is going to do. That be refreshing.
- 29:58Sam. Hey, how about how about if they
- 30:00have a guy who throws for just over 2000 yards in the season,
- 30:03which hadn't happened. Nate Stanley was playing in the
- 30:06playing in the football. What?
- 30:08Unbelievable. Is it truly?
- 30:09What did Circa put out a few years ago for points?
- 30:12Oh. Is the point.
- 30:12It was the drive for 325, Yeah, unbelievable. 25 points per game
- 30:17and then they put it out again last year and Iowa surpassed it.
- 30:22Yes, Tim Lester, yes, absolutely.
- 30:25Hey, question for you on the recruiting front.
- 30:26So George Nahas, kid that saw a ton of his games at Darling was
- 30:30a walk on at Iowa State. Now he's going to be a walk on
- 30:33at Iowa. Walk ONS now where I want to go
- 30:37and not just Nahas, but the guys that have departed those walk
- 30:40ONS for the most part that have left Iowa.
- 30:42With parents doing the right thing and giving them a chance.
- 30:45How is this going to work? They're already enrolled in
- 30:48another school. They've a lot of them went
- 30:50through spring practice at another school.
- 30:53They're just welcomed back with open arms.
- 30:54Do they have to go back in the portal?
- 30:56Can you give us any insight into that, Tom?
- 30:59I just think all those guys have just moved on.
- 31:02If they've moved on to another place, they've moved on.
- 31:04Like, you know, my buddy Rusty Van Wetsiga, you know, he just
- 31:09he's Central Michigan now and that's just where he's at.
- 31:13And I think all these other guys now.
- 31:15Is there a chance that somebody who still hasn't found a place
- 31:20that they bounce back onto the team?
- 31:22Yeah, I think there's potentially that, but I also
- 31:26think Iowa has kind of just capped themselves too.
- 31:30I think they've kind of gotten from the administration.
- 31:32Hey, we're just going to go with one O 5, so let's stay with one
- 31:35O 5. And and that's what I think what
- 31:39they're going to do is just play with one O 5 this year because
- 31:42that's what they've allocated financially for it.
- 31:45The books are starting to put on more of them are starting to put
- 31:49out to win totals. We'd seen 7 1/2 earlier circa
- 31:52back that up there 7 1/2 on I was win total this year when it
- 31:57comes to football. Do you have an opinion either
- 31:59way, Tom, as you look at it, obviously that back-to-back to
- 32:02back home games, home to Penn State, Minnesota and Oregon.
- 32:06Yikes Indiana. Before that at home, your
- 32:10thoughts on your thoughts on 7 1/2 being the the win total.
- 32:14Yeah, I, I could have swore somebody had it out there at 6
- 32:181/2 early day stand to a bit or something.
- 32:20I think had about 6 1/2 and it's gotten bet up to 7 1/2 and I, I
- 32:25think 7 1/2 is the right number. It's plus money if you go over
- 32:29right now over 7 1/2. So I, I think, you know, that's
- 32:33the that's the side I would, I would go with.
- 32:36But boy, it it's hard road to get.
- 32:39They say that it's a, you know, again, to get Oregon and Penn
- 32:44State and Iowa City, but it's Oregon and Penn State both going
- 32:48to probably be top ten teams. I would think.
- 32:51You know, maybe, although I'm not sure how good Dante Moore is
- 32:55that's going to be the quarterback at at Oregon.
- 32:58I know he's really talented, but you know, he's not Dylan Gabriel
- 33:02in terms of experience and proven what he can do.
- 33:05So I know at UCLA when he was there for a year, all he did was
- 33:08throw interceptions. So yeah, it's going to be, you
- 33:14know, Penn State's really good and you know, they got to go to
- 33:16Ames, got to go to Wisconsin. I mean, it's there's some,
- 33:22there's some I. Think Rutgers arrows pointing
- 33:25up. Yeah.
- 33:26Gotta go to Nebraska. Nebraska at the end I.
- 33:28Think that they're, they're, they're going to be motivated to
- 33:31to win for the second time in what, 10 years?
- 33:35Something like. I'm Hillary Connor.
- 33:38In our final segment, hour number one, Mike Palm, VP of
- 33:41Operations at Circa in Las Vegas will join us to kick off hour
- 33:45two, Bill Seals on Iowa State trends, plays of the day, circus
- 33:49sponsor. Those, those are coming up.
- 33:51Bill, Benny, Tom and and Joe Benny, Tom and Bill, the
- 33:56tiebreaker. All four of you can give this
- 33:58some thought in advance. Total points Nuggets versus OK C
- 34:03on Sunday. That will be the tiebreaker to
- 34:05be closest without going over. Hello Joe Hello.
- 34:10Does an American win the PGA tournament?
- 34:14No. The Preakness you can have Group
- 34:16A, which is horses 123 and four, or Group B which is horses 5678

- 34:31Chicago in the sky tomorrow at 2:00.
- 34:35Yep, I'll take fever. I'm on, I'm on the train.
- 34:37All right, the Knicks are 2 1/2 point favorite over Boston
- 34:40tonight. Oh yeah, I'll take New York.
- 34:43And the tiebreaker Joe is total points Nuggets OKC closest
- 34:48without going over. 220. Joe, have a good weekend.
- 34:52Thank you. You as well.
- 34:53Appreciate it. Benny's back.
- 34:56We had a rule, but the only one called per show.
- 34:58Commissioner Condon, you let. I let him in all right.
- 35:01Benny does an American win the PGA.
- 35:04Yes. Group A or Group B1 through 4/5
- 35:07through 9. Where's journalism?
- 35:10In the Group A, I'll take. Group A all.
- 35:12Right, you lose the Indiana fever 7 1/2 to the Chicago Sky.
- 35:20I'll take the fever. In the next 2 1/2 to the Celtics
- 35:23tonight, Benny. I'm I'm just going to take the
- 35:28Celtics. All right, Nuggets, OKC total
- 35:31points tiebreaker closest without going over. 2/26.
- 35:35See you, Benny. Have a good one.
- 35:37Thank you, bud. Tom is with Miller and Condon.
- 35:40Hi, Tom. Hello.
- 35:42Does an American win the PGA tournament?
- 35:45No Preakness Group A one through 4 or B5 through 9A.
- 35:52Indiana Fever, 7 1/2 point favored over the sky of Chicago.
- 35:56I'm going to take the sky and the point all.
- 35:58Right Knicks give 2 1/2 to Boston.
- 36:02I'll take the Knicks. Nuggets OKC Total points closest
- 36:06without going over 215. Thanks Tom.
- 36:11Enjoy the weekend and Bill is our final contestant this week
- 36:16on the chicken coop giveaway. Hi Bill.
- 36:19Hello, does an American win the PGA tournament?
- 36:24No Preakness, Group A or Group BB Fever 7 1/2 over the sky.
- 36:33We'll go with the fever. Knicks give 2 1/2 to the Celtics
- 36:38Celtics, Nuggets OKC Total points closest without going
- 36:42over. 212. Bill, thank you very much.
- 36:47Thank you. Appreciate it.
- 36:48Appreciate the chicken coop. Three locations throughout
- 36:50central Iowa, Ankeny, just South of D Max 60th and Ashworth in
- 36:54West Des Moines and in Urbandale, 12725 Meredith Drive.
- 36:59Here's what I want to watch. I'm anxious to see.
- 37:01So we've got Celtics, Knicks tonight.
- 37:04We've got OK C Denver on Sunday. Ratings wise, where does that
- 37:09little game in the middle of the afternoon on Saturday rank?
- 37:13A game one versus playoff games. Women versus men.
- 37:17ABC has it. ABC has the.
- 37:20The women, yes, you have the rivalry, you have all the pomp
- 37:23and circumstance. You have the debut for the
- 37:25regular season, you got 1.3 million for a 50 point blowout.
- 37:31On a Sunday afternoon. Sunday afternoon on ESPN.
- 37:33Now this is ABC broadcast. What's the what was the high
- 37:39watermark last year? Do you?
- 37:40Remember, no, I don't it. Was at least during the regular
- 37:42season. I don't did they get to
- 37:433,000,000 I? Thought it was higher than that.
- 37:44OK, highest WNBATV ratings. See if anything pops up from
- 37:52last year 54. Let's see, that's going back to
- 37:571997 Mercury. That was in 97 again.
- 38:02The All Star game last year had 3.4.
- 38:04OK, so maybe it's. They get to 3.
- 38:08Is that too much? To ask on a Saturday in May,
- 38:11Yeah, but I just want is it, is it, are they, do they get
- 38:14crushed? I mean, normally they would, but
- 38:17as you mentioned, this is the rivalry and.
- 38:19PGA is potentially going to stink.
- 38:22It's going to be awful. Some rivalry baseball, but in
- 38:26the grand scheme of things, that's regional stuff.
- 38:29There's 100 and. 60 big number. It's going to be a big number.
- 38:32Big number. Yeah, absolutely.
- 38:34All right. Hour 2 is coming up next.
