- 0:00Speaker 1: And then in.
- 0:02Speaker 2: 2016, I felt like I was finally getting to a
- 0:06Speaker 2: good place.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I just went to Sundance for the first time.
- 0:09Speaker 2: I was like, man, I feel like my career is
- 0:11Speaker 2: really starting to kind of take off in a different level.
- 0:16Speaker 2: And I think I had booked my first guest star
- 0:19Speaker 2: and co-star on TV. And then I got sick. Out
- 0:25Speaker 2: of nowhere, I just woke up. I had this headache
- 0:27Speaker 2: in the back of my head. Rested there for a
- 0:31Speaker 2: year and seven months. It was accompanied by chronic fatigue,
- 0:36Speaker 2: chronic pain throughout my body. I began to fall when
- 0:39Speaker 2: I would walk. As a woman, all this stuff was
- 0:44Speaker 2: like shutting down. It was not functioning properly. Doctors couldn't
- 0:49Speaker 2: figure out what was wrong with me. I did everything
- 0:52Speaker 2: that you can imagine. I had blood work, MRIs weekly, monthly.
- 0:57Speaker 2: I was taking every drug the doctors offered me. And
- 1:01Speaker 2: if anything, I was probably getting worse because they couldn't
- 1:03Speaker 2: figure out what it was.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I was like a guinea pig. But, you know, when
- 1:05Speaker 1: you don't know what's wrong with you, you just be like, yeah,
- 1:08Speaker 1: I'll take it.
- 1:09Speaker 2: You know, they would, you know, shoot me up in
- 1:11Speaker 2: the head and giving me all kinds of steroids. But
- 1:16Speaker 2: it didn't work. And so my daughter came home from
- 1:18Speaker 2: school and they was like, mom, we saw this documentary.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I think you should watch it at school.
- 1:22Speaker 1: And it was what the hell.
- 1:23Speaker 2: And I watched it on Netflix, watched it as a
- 1:27Speaker 2: family and was like, uh-uh. This is something that I've
- 1:31Speaker 2: never tried, right? It was also, you know, one of
- 1:35Speaker 2: those things you kind of hear about, and you're like,
- 1:36Speaker 2: that ain't really for black people.
- 1:38Speaker 1: But I was like, when they started talking about.
- 1:41Speaker 2: All diseases are not hereditary, is that sometimes we can
- 1:44Speaker 2: eat the same thing that caused the same disease in
- 1:46Speaker 2: our family. My mama died at 51. My daddy is 71.
- 1:51Speaker 2: He's the oldest man to ever live in our family. Mm-hmm.
- 1:54Speaker 1: People die young and they get sick at young ages
- 1:57Speaker 1: in my family.
- 1:58Speaker 2: And so I was like, let me try to go
- 2:01Speaker 2: vegan for like 30 days and see what happens. I
- 2:03Speaker 2: ain't got nothing to lose at this point because I
- 2:04Speaker 2: did think I was going to die. And did it.
- 2:08Speaker 2: And in the first 10 days, the headache I'd had
- 2:10Speaker 2: every day for a year and seven months disappeared. And
- 2:14Speaker 2: I started getting energy again. I started feeling better. And
- 2:16Speaker 2: I was like, oh, I think I'm on to something.
- 2:19Speaker 2: And I told my husband, I was like, this is
- 2:20Speaker 2: going to be my life.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I'm going to go vegan.
- 2:21Speaker 2: And That's literally how I got on that journey. And
- 2:27Speaker 2: prior to doing that, I had got to a really
- 2:31Speaker 2: dark place. I was, you know, suffering from anxiety and depression.
- 2:36Speaker 2: And I had what, you know, I grew up in
- 2:37Speaker 2: the church from the South. And I always prided myself
- 2:41Speaker 2: on having this great relationship with God. And I had
- 2:45Speaker 2: what I call my last call and conversation with him
- 2:49Speaker 2: in the bathroom because I thought he had forgotten about
- 2:51Speaker 2: me when I was sick. And so I went in
- 2:53Speaker 2: the bathroom, I got in the mirror and I was
- 2:56Speaker 2: really in search of trying to see my soul.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And I prayed and I was like, God, if you
- 3:01Speaker 1: heal me, you can have me. And I meant it.
- 3:05Speaker 1: And something changed that day in the bathroom. I don't know.
- 3:11Speaker 1: When I walked out, I felt different. I didn't feel healed,
- 3:13Speaker 1: but I felt different.
- 3:15Speaker 2: And then, you know, later is when my daughter had
- 3:18Speaker 2: came home about the documentary and.
- 3:23Speaker 1: My graduates from my school being Forbes.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Bag drop.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Bag drop. Mic drop. Bag drop.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Bag drop.
