- 0:27Speaker 2: wife and I have are My wife and Victoria have
- 0:31Speaker 2: struck up kind of a friendship, and so they've been

- 0:51Speaker 2: went hiking while I was doing my podcast, and then
- 0:54Speaker 2: we went to the fortieth anniversary And in between that time,
- 0:59Speaker 2: we had some time to hill before we got them
- 1:03Speaker 2: on their plane on Sunday evening. So we went to
- 1:06Speaker 2: brunch at Sunday's Best and that was nice.
- 1:08Speaker 1: But we also is that the one down here on
- 1:11Speaker 1: over there in the mail area, Yeah, where the hearth
- 1:15Speaker 1: and Hill is.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Yeah, And then we took them to a place.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Now.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Remember these two grew up here, right, and they had
- 1:23Speaker 2: never been. And I'll bet Nick has never been to
- 1:27Speaker 2: Gilgal Gardens.
- 1:28Speaker 1: They have never been. You've never been. No, it's right
- 1:31Speaker 1: by our old studio.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Now where else you going to see Joseph smith Sphinx.
- 1:35Speaker 3: I mean I've seen it online. I know where it's at.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I haven't physically watched.
- 1:38Speaker 1: It's real. It's really pleasant there too. Yeah. Yeah, did
- 1:41Speaker 1: you get a picture of mister brick pants. He's mine?
- 1:44Speaker 2: You know. That's the only picture I took. I should
- 1:45Speaker 2: have taken more.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Oh.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Yeah, we went to Oka on Saturday.
- 1:49Speaker 1: That was it.
- 1:50Speaker 2: But I didn't think that you had been to Gilgal Gardens,
- 1:56Speaker 2: home of the strangest.
- 1:59Speaker 1: The guy I hat his name. He was a He
- 2:01Speaker 1: was a mason, a brick mason, a brick layer and mason.
- 2:05Speaker 1: He and he was also just cuckoo for the Mormon Church,
- 2:10Speaker 1: for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Because you have that photo posted on X ninety six
- 2:14Speaker 3: Style Comforts Slash.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Live, that's the Joseph smith Sphinx.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Uh huh did you ever say what the purpose was?
- 2:21Speaker 1: Yeah? I can't remember. I can't remember what it is anymore.
- 2:25Speaker 2: But he had reasons. But thank goodness.
- 2:28Speaker 1: So when I first went to Gilgal, it was private
- 2:32Speaker 1: and there was no way you could get in there
- 2:35Speaker 1: except you had to, like at night. Client there there
- 2:39Speaker 1: are some houses, uh, and you round it in the surrounded,
- 2:43Speaker 1: and you have to go at night and climb over
- 2:45Speaker 1: a fence. And the people who lived there didn't want
- 2:48Speaker 1: you to be doing that. But so I went there
- 2:51Speaker 1: at night and climbed over the fence and went and
- 2:52Speaker 1: sought for the first time. But then Salt Lake City
- 2:55Speaker 1: finally bought the whole area.
- 2:58Speaker 2: And turned it into the park, home of the strangest
- 3:03Speaker 2: sculptures that you will ever see. Sure, yeah, now the
- 3:07Speaker 2: sphinx is It's got Joseph Smith's face on it, but
- 3:11Speaker 2: the sphinx's body. The sphinx represents the guy child who
- 3:17Speaker 2: made it his belief that the answer to life's great
- 3:20Speaker 2: questions cannot be discovered with the intellect, but only through faith.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Ah.
- 3:25Speaker 2: The sphinx is an ancient symbol of riddles and mystery.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Joseph Smith's face symbolizes his conviction that the LDS priesthood
- 3:33Speaker 2: reveals to mankind the answers to life's mystery.
- 3:36Speaker 3: It also represents Joseph Smith.
- 3:40Speaker 1: And Joseph mister Child. Named the garden Gilgal, after the
- 3:44Speaker 1: biblical location where Joshua ordered the Israelites to place twelve
- 3:49Speaker 1: stones as a memorial named Gilgao is sometimes translated to
- 3:53Speaker 1: mean circle of standing stones. And let's see what else
- 3:57Speaker 1: is there? Yeah, he was a bishop in like tenth ward.
- 4:02Speaker 1: He did all of this in what years?
- 4:04Speaker 2: Ye?
- 4:04Speaker 3: What was he? When was helive?
- 4:06Speaker 2: He died in sixty three, oh, eighteen.
- 4:09Speaker 3: That's a lot later than I thought.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Eighteen eighty eight to nineteen sixty three. Yeah, so he
- 4:14Speaker 1: did this stuff. Twelve original scriptures, over seventy stones engraved
- 4:17Speaker 1: with scriptures, poems, and texts. Gilgal Sculpture Garden the only
- 4:22Speaker 1: designated visionary art environment in the state of Utah. And yeah,
- 4:28Speaker 1: he was. He was a little obsessed.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:32Speaker 2: There's one called Nebeker's Dream, which is essentially a statue
- 4:38Speaker 2: of body parts.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Oh, I actually haven't seen that one.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's called Daniel two Nebeconezar's Dream. Okay, it's
- 4:50Speaker 2: represented by the different pieces of the giant would rule
- 4:53Speaker 2: the earth until the Kingdom of God was established.
- 4:56Speaker 3: A rule forever sure, why not.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Child believed God's kingdom has was begun with the founding
- 5:01Speaker 2: of the LDS Church.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I'm trying to see what mister they just call him
- 5:06Speaker 1: mister brick pants.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Well that's what.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I can't find what he's supposed to.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Be his His statue is called the Monument to the Trade.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Okay, so to the masonry trade.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Yeah, and let's see. Let me find that the Monument
- 5:25Speaker 2: to the Trade.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Here we go.
- 5:27Speaker 2: But it's mister brick pants. I think that's what Trent Harris.
- 5:30Speaker 2: That's what Trent Harris named him. Yeah. In this self portress,
- 5:34Speaker 2: Child conveys his great love for the masonry trade and
- 5:38Speaker 2: for his religion. The figure of Child that's him holds
- 5:42Speaker 2: a Bible under his right arm and blueprints under his left.
- 5:46Speaker 2: The building behind him is an LDS is the LDS
- 5:50Speaker 2: tenth Ward on eighth East and four hundred South, where
- 5:53Speaker 2: he served as bishop for nineteen years. The monument is
- 5:57Speaker 2: an example of workmanship for which he was known. The
- 6:01Speaker 2: flagstones in the walls were cut by hand and meticulously laid.
- 6:06Speaker 2: But it's it's it's him standing there with pants made
- 6:11Speaker 2: of stacks of bricks.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Yeah, sure, mister brick pants.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Yeah, they it says here. They were troublesome to make.
- 6:19Speaker 2: The bricks were dissembled, numbered and fired. The firing made
- 6:23Speaker 2: the numbers unreadable. The pants had to be rebuilt like
- 6:27Speaker 2: a puzzle.
- 6:30Speaker 1: If you've never been there, you really should go. And
- 6:32Speaker 1: it's it's it's I think it's it's free. You just
- 6:35Speaker 1: can walk in there. It's seven forty nine east on
- 6:38Speaker 1: fifth South.
- 6:38Speaker 3: It's right next to my gym, so maybe l Oh
- 6:41Speaker 3: is your Jim across the street?
- 6:43Speaker 1: Yeah, the one.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Oh, you could easily walk right over there.
- 6:45Speaker 3: I don't want to. I try to get them to
- 6:47Speaker 3: do advertising and they didn't, so I don't want to
- 6:49Speaker 3: say their name.
- 6:49Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, why do you see if you can
- 6:52Speaker 1: get the Gilgal Gardens to sure?
- 6:55Speaker 3: Of course, what did Victoria think?
- 6:57Speaker 1: Though?
- 6:58Speaker 3: We should have kept her on the line so she
- 6:59Speaker 3: could have.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Her and her husband basically had the same response to
- 7:04Speaker 2: every sculpture that we saw. What the hell.
- 7:10Speaker 1: You know? That? It's it is odd that so many
- 7:12Speaker 1: people don't know about it, and it's it's also odd
- 7:15Speaker 1: that people don't know and because when I found out
- 7:18Speaker 1: that Brigham Young is buried in the avenues and just one,
- 7:23Speaker 1: just a lone grave there, and and I was stunned
- 7:28Speaker 1: when I found he's not in the Salt Lake Cemetery's not.
- 7:30Speaker 1: He's just there's this one grave in the avenue. They yeah,
- 7:34Speaker 1: it's weird.
- 7:35Speaker 2: There's a lot of that stuff around. But yeah, go
- 7:37Speaker 2: go see Gilgal Gardens. Sure you go work out done
- 7:41Speaker 2: across the street and up a little bit to see
- 7:43Speaker 2: the entrance there, and.
- 7:44Speaker 1: You didn't realize there was there was still a gym there.
- 7:47Speaker 1: It used to be twenty four hour Fitness.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Well the there's another one there now, okay, yeah, all
- 7:54Speaker 3: right
- 7:55Speaker 2: Uh yeah, I mean where else are you going to
- 7:57Speaker 2: see it, Joseph smith Sphinx except for there, all right,
