Latest / Sports Card Clubhouse / A Hobby Revolt Is Coming?
Transcript
- 0:00In our massive country, there are card collectors throughout
- 0:04the land participating in the hobby.
- 0:06There's Mike of Junk Wax Hero and Greg of Midlife Cards, and
- 0:11while distance may separate them, here is where they come
- 0:15together to talk cards. Hey buddy, how are you doing on
- 0:22this fine day? Well, Greg, we have 60° weather
- 0:27on the way in the next few days here in Maine.
- 0:32I got promoted in my day job, big, big promotion.
- 0:37And we have Jayson Tatum returning to the two seed
- 0:41Celtics tomorrow night. I don't know how it could get
- 0:44any better. I mean, if if a pile of cash
- 0:49fell in your lap, that would be a little better.
- 0:52Yeah, always. How are you doing?
- 0:57I'm doing good, man. I'm doing good.
- 0:59I had, I had some work news happened today too.
- 1:05I haven't even told you this. I haven't really told anybody
- 1:07this, but apparently world, here we go.
- 1:10There is a position that I've kind of been eyeing at a
- 1:13different school. Now, I've been at the same
- 1:15school for 21 years and it would be a different subject.
- 1:21It would be history subject in a different at a different school
- 1:25at a different grade level. And I thought it was going to
- 1:29not become available. And I found out today it's
- 1:33available. So that could be big news in my
- 1:38life in the next little bit. But we will see.
- 1:43I mean nothing's done till it's done, but that that could be
- 1:49something different. Well, good luck.
- 1:52Well, yeah, we'll see how it goes.
- 1:54All right, we've got lots now. On my way to work today, I was
- 2:01listening to Adam and Dylan on their Turn back the Clock, which
- 2:07I mean, I, I feel like I say this every time they do a video
- 2:10it, it is one of my favorite episodes that dropped ever.
- 2:14Like they do it about once a month.
- 2:16It's like one of the things I most look forward to.
- 2:20And it was really good today. And I know that you haven't had
- 2:23a chance to listen to it yet. And there's a lot I want to chew
- 2:30on with that. But then on the way home, I was
- 2:33listening. Mike Moynihan put out a video
- 2:36today about how he thinks that there is a revolt coming from
- 2:43collectors against the industry, the card industry, and he said
- 2:51specifically against collector's universe.
- 2:56He said, I, I wrote it down because I didn't want to
- 2:58misquote him. There's a revolt against the
- 3:01collector's monster coming, and so those two things kind of got
- 3:07my juices flowing. So I don't know if you have
- 3:10thoughts on those. I didn't really tell you what
- 3:15Adam and Dylan talked about. The thing that was most
- 3:18interesting to me was Adam revealed to everybody that he
- 3:23had bought one of those Griffey Mantle cards a few years ago and
- 3:28where Mantle signed it, but not Griffey.
- 3:31And I think he bought it for like 1000 or $2000.
- 3:35And there were some cards he wanted to add to his collection.
- 3:37So he was like, what could I sell?
- 3:38So he was kind of looking up values and he saw that card was
- 3:43worth a lot and he sold it for $14,000.
- 3:47So he took a card he had no plans on selling.
- 3:51But once it got to a certain price point, he said.
- 3:55I got to sell this because I'd rather have those other things
- 3:58than. This.
- 3:59It's very similar to when he had the PSA 10 1981 tops Larry Bird
- 4:06and the value skyrocketed and he's like, I don't need this in
- 4:09APSA 10 and he he turned around and sold it for $30,000.
- 4:14Yeah, and then went and bought a 52 mantle.
- 4:17Right, I also would much rather have love the 81 tops bird.
- 4:21I have it in APSA 6 up on my wall here.
- 4:25I would much rather have a mantle than APSA 1081 tops bird.
- 4:31I have an 81 tubs burden an 8 and it's from my childhood
- 4:34collection and I'm like this card, this card looks like a 10
- 4:38like. So finally, like five years ago,
- 4:40I sent it in at PSA 'cause I was just, I was like, what are they
- 4:43going to? What would they do with this?
- 4:44And got an 8. But I mean, it's perfect.
- 4:47But that's a whole different topic.
- 4:50Anything in there that gets you excited?
- 4:54I did have a mail day today. I have a car I just opened.
- 4:57I don't. I don't like cards.
- 5:00You don't like cards or mail days?
- 5:01No, no. So actually, you know, I'm going
- 5:05to talk about this a little bit because on Saturday and not,
- 5:08we're not talking about mail days, but my stupid sense of
- 5:11humor got me in some trouble, got us in some trouble.
- 5:15I don't know how long ago that podcast was recorded or aired,
- 5:20but at some point we were talking about values and, and
- 5:22we, we were talking about people who say they don't care about
- 5:27values after they buy a card. And I made it very clear I'm one
- 5:31of those people. I once I buy a card, and I've
- 5:33said this a million times, once I buy a card, I could not care
- 5:36less about the value of that card.
- 5:39I recently put my card collection in card ladder and
- 5:42have been shocked to watch as it moves up and down and I haven't
- 5:46decided if I'd like it or if I hate it.
- 5:47I love card ladders. Very cool tool, but no sponsor.
- 5:52But it's I made it very clear that I am one of those people
- 5:59who does not care about the value of my cars.
- 6:02I do want them to go up and I made that clear also.
- 6:04I want them to go up, but I never think about it.
- 6:07And if they all went down and John 3-DA's kid made a great
- 6:12point. I think it was him who said if
- 6:15my all my cards go to zero, there are much bigger problems
- 6:18in the world. And but the problem I I had
- 6:22there is that I let it off by saying, but the people who say
- 6:28they don't care about values care when they sell.
- 6:34And maybe if they don't truly care, they should just give
- 6:36their cards away. And I, I'm a big fan of
- 6:39absurdist humor. My one of my favorite comedic
- 6:42actors is Tim Robinson and his absurd TV show.
- 6:47I wish I think you should leave. It's so stupid.
- 6:51It's so. And anytime I say anything
- 6:54that's funny is so stupid. It is the biggest compliment I
- 6:57could give to ATV show or a movie.
- 7:00Because if something is absurd and outrageously stupid, it
- 7:04makes me laugh so hard. And so I have always had an
- 7:10absurd humor bent to me ever since I was a little kid.
- 7:14I say outrageous things and I'm constantly having to say on my
- 7:19videos, I'm just kidding. Please don't comment that you're
- 7:23mad that I just said that or something like that.
- 7:24Because people take me seriously and I know that.
- 7:27People who know me don't take me seriously.
- 7:30They know I'm joking when I say stupid things.
- 7:33But when I said that, I didn't think anything of it, I said it.
- 7:36And I think that people who were watching that got so focused on
- 7:40that stupid joke that they ignored the fact that their
- 7:43opinions actually completely aligned with what I said.
- 7:48And so there were several videos that were made that people were
- 7:52mad at me for saying that. And I think also you got caught
- 7:56up in this whirlwind 2 and there were a lot of comments.
- 8:00Somebody said my comments were stupid, another YouTube.
- 8:04And so, yeah, it was, it was frustrating Saturday watching
- 8:10all these videos and reading all these comments.
- 8:14But I'd also say if you're another YouTube and you have my
- 8:17cell phone number and you disagree with something I said
- 8:20or you want to get clarification, just text me,
- 8:22give me a call. Let's talk.
- 8:24Ask me to come on. I can clarify what I what I
- 8:26said. That's it.
- 8:30No. OK, but let now that you know
- 8:33the can of worms has been opened, the IT is it possible
- 8:40that there are times where the value of a car does get so out
- 8:46of hand that even though you weren't planning on selling it
- 8:50or you don't care about the value?
- 8:52Sort of like with two examples we just gave about Adam, they're
- 8:57like, whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a second.
- 8:59You know this card I had planned on because he's a Mickey Mantle
- 9:04collector and he has a lot. He has like the full Mantle tops
- 9:08run and all the Mantle stuff. He's got Mantle autos, packed
- 9:12pulled autos. He wants the Mantle cards.
- 9:16But at $14,000, it's like I want the card, but I don't want it at
- 9:26$14,000 because it goes back to the whole economic principle of
- 9:30opportunity cost. You can either have this or you
- 9:34can have this. So every day that you have a
- 9:38card at this value, you're kind of choosing that card over the
- 9:44cash that you could exchange it for.
- 9:47Now, I know that doesn't tie in the emotional connection or the
- 9:50story or the nostalgia that you might have.
- 9:53That might be something you can't put a value on.
- 9:56But I do think that there are times where cards get a little
- 10:02carried away and people say, I don't care about value, but if
- 10:07someone will pay me this, it's for sale.
- 10:12Like is that, is that fair too? Well, as part of this activity
- 10:16of putting my cards into card ladder, I discovered that some
- 10:21of my Shohei Otani rookies have absolutely skyrocketed in value.
- 10:26Cards that I spent $100 on two years ago are now worth 506
- 10:31hundred dollars. One card that I spent 180 on two
- 10:35years ago is now going for almost $900.
- 10:39It's quadrupled in in two years. And so I'm working on I this new
- 10:49concept, not new totally, but fairly new to me new concept for
- 10:53my collection, which I'll talk about once I've really
- 10:54formulated it well and decided that because I already had one
- 11:01show, Hey, the the one that's worth the most that I'm keeping.
- 11:05Do I need these other three show?
- 11:07Hey, rookies? I really don't.
- 11:09And so I decided I was going to sell them.
- 11:11It's spring training, values are up.
- 11:14WBC. His values have surged like
- 11:18crazy. And what if he has an injury?
- 11:21What if he has a bad season? I'm OK with one card holding
- 11:26that risk, but do I want four of them holding that risk?
- 11:30I probably wouldn't have known this without entering in my
- 11:34collection. I don't know.
- 11:37I 'cause I never, I never look up values anywhere, but I just
- 11:41started getting these alerts about my collection and I was
- 11:43like, oh man. So I'm selling them on CIA,
- 11:47bitch. By the way, CIA is partially
- 11:51owned by Crystal. What a Segway partially owned by
- 11:54Chris Sewell, our partner here on Sports Card Clubhouse.
- 12:00He sponsors service issues and he is the best, in our opinion,
- 12:06person to sell your collection to.
- 12:08Part of your collection, all your collection.
- 12:10Either way, he will give you a fair readout of what your
- 12:14collection is worth. Why He's willing to pay what
- 12:16he's willing to pay for it. You can e-mail him at
- 12:20sewellsportscards@gmail.com. You can also just go to
- 12:24sportscardclubhouse.com and go to partners and there he is, the
- 12:30one and only sponsor we have. The one and only sponsor that we
- 12:33really want to have for now is Chris.
- 12:35Whoa. Whoa, whoa.
- 12:36Back up. No, Chris is not.
- 12:39You're right. Yeah, I agree.
- 12:41Pumping Chris. He's awesome.
- 12:42We're. Chris is fantastic.
- 12:44Love the guy. Looking forward to seeing him
- 12:46here in about 3 1/2 months at the National.
- 12:50Four months. Four months at the National.
- 12:52Almost 5 months. And like we've talked about
- 12:56their podcast, which comes out on Tuesday afternoons, I really
- 13:00have been enjoying getting to know him more, getting to know
- 13:05Jeremy Donson, the Texas Snowman.
- 13:08They're just great guys. And like you said, CIA, they are
- 13:13both owners of CIA. And the CIA auction closes as
- 13:19this is released tomorrow, which would be March 8th.
- 13:24So go over the auction doesn't? Close Auction closes on the
- 13:2915th. My I take that back.
- 13:31You're right it is the IT is the following Sunday the 15th so go
- 13:36bid on some show. Hey, cards on that.
- 13:39Hey and I'll. You know, go ahead.
- 13:40You mentioned, you mentioned the podcast and you you mentioned
- 13:42Chris and Jeremy, but you didn't mention the star of the podcast.
- 13:47Well, I just thought it went without saying that the stars
- 13:49Theo, our boy Theo is, is absolutely fantastic and I, I
- 13:56really like his contributions to the podcast.
- 13:59Let me go back to the website for a second.
- 14:01As we're continue, we're, we're getting way off track now.
- 14:05If we go to the website, I do want to go to the vote tab
- 14:08because we're always having a poll running and there is a a
- 14:15pole that we have up right now. It's a tough one.
- 14:20Yeah, it is a tough one. It's the T2O6.
- 14:22It's what is the most famous sports card.
- 14:24Famous T2O6, Honda Swagner, 33 Gaudi, Babe Ruth, All versions
- 14:304849 Leaf. Jackie Robinson says that's his
- 14:3448. So get ready for the Rotten
- 14:35Tomatoes to be thrown at you. The 52 tops Mickey Mantle, the O
- 14:41Peachy or tops Gretzky rookie, The Bird, Magic, Julius Irving
- 14:46card, The 86 Flair Jordan, The 89 upper deck Ken Griffey
- 14:49Junior, The 2000 playoff contenders, Tom Brady.
- 14:52You can obviously tell who made the poll by including that one
- 14:57and the 2003 exquisite RPA, LeBron James and and I voted.
- 15:05And when you vote, it shows you how it how the voting is.
- 15:10And it's an absolute landslide right now.
- 15:14The Mickey Mantle, the 52 tops Mickey Mantle 53% in the Hannes,
- 15:19Wagner second at 27%. But interesting to me is that #3
- 15:26is the playoff contenders, Tom Brady.
- 15:28That, to me, is the most newsworthy part.
- 15:35Uh oh, you're you're muted. I don't hear you.
- 15:39So I don't know why this thing mutes itself.
- 15:41I don't understand it. So I would have had it at Mantle
- 15:44first, Wagner second, Griffey third, Jordan 4th.
- 15:50I I'm 100% on board with you and.
- 15:54I was torn between the Mantle and the Wagner.
- 15:57The Wagner gets more public love recently.
- 16:00That's just recency bias cause a bunch of them have sold this
- 16:03year. But I think the mantle is is
- 16:06more famous, more well known, more people have heard of
- 16:09Mantle. I no, I haven't shared this on a
- 16:13video. I did a quick post.
- 16:15I do want to throw out my own personal plug in the midlife
- 16:19tab. I had several people say hey I'm
- 16:21not going to Strongsville but Greg I want a signed.
- 16:25I don't know why anyone would want me to sign something but
- 16:28they want a signed and or inscribed midlife card
- 16:33collecting stories book and so I made that available if you go to
- 16:37the link in the midlife tab on Sports card Clubhouse so check
- 16:40that out too. Greg, you should sign one for me
- 16:43and then charge $1000 for every subsequent autograph.
- 16:47So mine is worth so much money. But the problem is, is I would
- 16:50have one signed one in existence.
- 16:53That's right, it'd. Be worth so much.
- 16:56Yeah, it'd be worth like 20-3 dollars instead of 2250.
- 17:00I'll take it. I'd sell.
- 17:02In a heartbeat, I would. I mean, heck, I'm, I don't sell
- 17:07anything for the right price. OK, I want to circle back to
- 17:12what we were talking about a few minutes ago.
- 17:16You know when when you buy a card and the card isn't bought
- 17:21as an investment, even though there are, you know, channels
- 17:25out there like your buddy, a sports card investor, good old
- 17:32Jeff, like, like some people look at cards as investments.
- 17:37Now, I don't and I know that most of our community doesn't
- 17:40look at it as an investment, but there are some people who do
- 17:44look at it as an investment. At what point that when, when
- 17:50you buy a card for just your regular old collection, when it
- 17:55gets to a certain value, does it no longer hold the
- 18:02collectibility as much as the financial return?
- 18:07I mean, that's the part that I struggle with, with the whole
- 18:11thing that you were just talking about, about the, the, you know,
- 18:15comment you made about, well, then just give your cards away,
- 18:17blah, blah, blah. I don't have any problem with
- 18:20everybody saying I don't have any problem with anything.
- 18:22I don't really care. But just for the sake of
- 18:24discussion, I don't have any problem with somebody saying I
- 18:28don't care about values. I buy a card to keep it until I
- 18:30die and then my heirs can do whatever they want with it.
- 18:32I have no, I have no problem with that.
- 18:35But the part that I struggle with is, but what if that card,
- 18:42what if you bought that show hey card for $100 and now it's worth
- 18:47100,000 just theoretically. OK, that's that that.
- 18:52Point. In today's dollars, I'm selling.
- 18:57But that's my point. That's my point is I don't think
- 19:00anybody, I think a lot of collectors, not investors,
- 19:05right? But collectors don't care about
- 19:08the value. But if the value gets to a
- 19:10certain point, like we have a friend in common, I didn't, this
- 19:13was an off the record comment that somebody made to me, But he
- 19:17bought a card at the National and it's doubled in value.
- 19:21And he's going, he texted me the other day, he goes, should I
- 19:24sell this? It's doubled in value.
- 19:27It's like my Steph Curry rookie that we talked about a couple
- 19:29weeks ago. It's more than doubled today.
- 19:31I got the update. It's up to 1900.
- 19:33I paid 800 for it and it's like, but it fits in my collection.
- 19:38I'm not selling. I'm I'm going to want that card
- 19:41in my collection in a year, in five years and 10 years and 20
- 19:44years. Do I sell it today just because
- 19:47it's gone up in value? No.
- 19:48But if it goes to 10,000, this theoretically, let's say it goes
- 19:52to 10,000 by this year's National, it won't, but let's
- 19:55just say that it did. And you could go buy a Babe Ruth
- 19:57card. Or you could buy a really nice
- 20:00Ted Williams rookie. Like there comes a point where I
- 20:04don't think a lot of us intend to care about the value and a
- 20:08lot of us don't pay attention to the value, but there are times
- 20:11where the value just slaps you across the face and goes, you
- 20:14need to pay attention to this. You had me at Babe Ruth.
- 20:18You know how I feel about Ted Williams 1939 play ball card.
- 20:22I hate it. I love Ted Williams.
- 20:23I have almost all of his cards. I hate his play ball rookie
- 20:28card. I don't hate it at all, I love
- 20:30it. I hate it.
- 20:32So if the Steph Curry rookie went up to $10,000 by the
- 20:37National, so in one year it went up by 12, XI would probably sell
- 20:45because it's plentiful and sure to come back down 1900.
- 20:54I mean, I, I think it's going to come down from the 1900.
- 20:57I just don't want to sell it. I have Alan and Ginter, Pirates
- 21:05of the Spanish Maine Blackbeard card which I love and I bought
- 21:10it 18 months ago for $420.00. I think I could sell it right
- 21:19now. Honestly, I think I could sell
- 21:21it for close to $4000. I really believe that and and I
- 21:30wouldn't do it. I wouldn't do it.
- 21:32In fact, there's one for sale right now and I'm thinking about
- 21:38bidding on it because I love the card so much.
- 21:43I mean, depending on what it sells for, I'm interested.
- 21:48I also have a trade in place, a deal in place unless and he's I
- 21:54know he'll be listening to this unless my good friend pulls out
- 22:00of the deal, which he would never do because he has as a man
- 22:05of integrity and he would never break my heart like that are.
- 22:09You going to name names? David, it is.
- 22:15We have a deal in place that has been in place for a couple
- 22:18months for an SGC 5 of that card, which is.
- 22:25What grade? Mine's APSA 2.
- 22:28OK. And it is it.
- 22:33It is a deal that I hope we are able to complete at
- 22:39Strongsville. Anyway, I don't even know where
- 22:43I'm what I'm talking about anymore.
- 22:45I'm I'm all getting all, I'm getting all sweaty or something.
- 22:50Yeah. So, OK, so we talked about
- 22:54Dylan, we talked about Adam, we talked about the card goes to
- 22:58the price where it's hard to ignore the value even if you
- 23:01want the card. But that's an example.
- 23:03Like that's an example right there where I understand when
- 23:06people say I don't care about the value.
- 23:08It's mine. It's in it's in my collection.
- 23:11I, I, I would not sell. I mean, I'm trying to think of
- 23:15what the number would be that I would sell my Blackbeard for.
- 23:21And, and it would be a lot because even though it might be
- 23:26worth closing in on 4000 right now, I think it would take at
- 23:32least 10 for me to sell it. So, so that that shows you how
- 23:38much I want the card and how much the value doesn't really
- 23:43matter that it would have to just go, it would have to go 25
- 23:47X for me to sell that card. I did have a mail day and I
- 23:53mentioned that and you didn't want to see the card.
- 23:56Of course I do. I always want to see your cards.
- 23:59This is one of your favorite players of all time.
- 24:01Pedro Martinez. No.
- 24:03Don't you dare show me a Derek Cheeter card.
- 24:08It's not. We've got a 97 Bowman's best
- 24:15killer card, atomic refractor, Derek Jeter, and it's gorgeous.
- 24:21That is that thing. Killer card.
- 24:25Yeah, came in the mail today. Bought that at a fanatics
- 24:30auction. It's the first atomic refractor,
- 24:33is that right? 96 didn't have them.
- 24:38I think it's 97. And it's got some greening, but
- 24:43you know, most of them do. Pedro also has one in that set
- 24:50I'm going to look at. So 97 Atomic Refractor first.
- 24:59Oh Nope, sorry. 98 Bowman's best is the first numbered atomic.
- 25:07That's what I was thinking. Of and then.
- 25:08Yes, Adam. Adam put together a list of the
- 25:13big best Pedro cards of all time, and I was studying it last
- 25:16night as I fell asleep. Yeah, that.
- 25:19That's what I remembered. And then and then this card came
- 25:22yesterday. This is a 95 Bowman's best blue
- 25:28refractor. Derek Jeter.
- 25:30Look at that baby. Yeah, it's got the logo in the
- 25:35background. So you're you're getting heavy
- 25:38into modern? Hey, when we started this
- 25:40podcast, I said I want to get into modern and I don't know
- 25:44what to collect. And I started talking about
- 25:46Patrick Willis. I grabbed a couple of those
- 25:48cards. I like them and I'm not over the
- 25:51moon for them. And then I bought that card last
- 25:55week. Have we?
- 25:56We haven't talked about that on here.
- 25:57I haven't even gotten it in the mail yet, but I got a big like a
- 26:01big we. I didn't say what the card was
- 26:03on here, did I last time. I I don't even remember
- 26:07recording. Last week.
- 26:09Yeah, it's I blacked out. Do you remember what you had for
- 26:12breakfast this morning? Yeah, because I have the same
- 26:14thing for breakfast every day for 15 years.
- 26:17OK, what is which is what? Oatmeal.
- 26:19Oatmeal mixed with Fiber One. Oh, well, look at that.
- 26:23Yeah. So I said last week that there
- 26:27were two big Modern cards that I was looking to bid on in the
- 26:33next 48 hour. Well, it was about 3 or 4 days
- 26:37and I didn't say what they were and I got one of them.
- 26:42I got one of them and I'll pull it up on the screen if you want.
- 26:45You want to look at it on the screen.
- 26:47Sure our podcast listeners won't.
- 26:49Yeah, well, you know that they could always go check us out on
- 26:52YouTube. Let me pull it up.
- 26:56This was a card that closed on believe it was Monday and here
- 27:06it comes right now, all right up on this.
- 27:11Oh, it's not doing it. Hold on.
- 27:13How do I do this? It's it's doing one of those
- 27:15things where when I share my screen, it's not the same
- 27:19screen. I usually have all this stuff
- 27:21prepped, but I was not prepared that I would be doing this.
- 27:24So here we go. All right, so it is a 93 finest
- 27:30refractor. Barry Bonds and I set a new high
- 27:35comp on the card. Now when you look at that,
- 27:41you're you're wincing. I'll say a couple of things, OK.
- 27:44No, I'm I'm impressed. I love 93 finest refractors.
- 27:49Congratulations. Thank you.
- 27:51So there's a few things that stood out to me about this card.
- 27:54Number 1, lot of the times they have bad centering.
- 27:58Even the nines are like 7525 centering side to side.
- 28:02This has pretty darn good centering.
- 28:06The other thing about it is look at the serial number.
- 28:10That card was graded within like the last 30 days.
- 28:17So that is that to me says a lot.
- 28:22I mean, there's the the corners are like super sharp.
- 28:26It just got an 8. And the way I look at an 8 now
- 28:31is an 8 with a brand new serial number is like a nine from five
- 28:37years ago or three years ago or two years ago.
- 28:40So yeah, so that was a big addition.
- 28:44I know a lot of people hate Barry Bonds and, you know,
- 28:47there's a lot to dislike about the guy.
- 28:50But, and, and I know Greg, you know, Greg, you're a vintage
- 28:53card collector and you just showed three modern cards.
- 28:56I'm, I guess this is my reveal video for the month.
- 28:59I don't know. But it, I, they're just, they're
- 29:03cards I want. I, I, there was something in me
- 29:08that happened at the West Coast card show when I was looking at
- 29:12a case and I pulled out a 90s refractor of Jeter and I just
- 29:18looked at it in person and, and the pictures on the Internet
- 29:22just don't do these things justice.
- 29:24They just don't. And I was like, holy crap.
- 29:27Like I need this card. I didn't end up buying the card.
- 29:32And then I showed a picture of it on my, one of my, one of my
- 29:35videos from the West Coast card show.
- 29:38And now I'm just like, I'm like, I'm down with this, these 90s
- 29:43refractors, I'm down with them and people go, you're wasting
- 29:46your money. That's garbage.
- 29:47That's why I think they're great.
- 29:49I don't care if other people think they're garbage.
- 29:51I think they're so freaking cool.
- 29:54How many times did you watch me showing some sort of modern car
- 30:00and you scoff at me 'cause I have modern cars and now you are
- 30:05me? I don't think I ever scoffed at
- 30:07anyone. I've always gone gotten a lot of
- 30:11appreciation from people being excited about what they they
- 30:17added. Like I'll give you an example,
- 30:20Adam Vintage Sanctuary. Fantastic guy, he does great
- 30:25videos. Tons of energy.
- 30:27Tons of energy. He's a fellow teacher, he's a
- 30:31Community College, I think teacher, if I'm not mistaken.
- 30:34And he he gets these like diamond, some sort of like like
- 30:42Willie May's anniversary diamond or mini diamond things.
- 30:48And he shows them on the screen and they're just, they're
- 30:50gorgeous. They're and I'm like, man,
- 30:52that's cool. It's not my thing.
- 30:55But he's pumped and they're cool.
- 30:58But but they just, they just hadn't caught me yet.
- 31:02And, and Dylan has been doing it and Adam has been buying all
- 31:07these Pedros and Dylan's buying these Mantle modern card
- 31:11refractors. And you know, a lot of our
- 31:13vintage buddies have been doing it.
- 31:15And I just, I hadn't really caught the bug.
- 31:19And I'm, I'm, I'm like totally, I totally get it now.
- 31:23So I wouldn't say I ever scoffed.
- 31:26The thing I scoff at is this, this is what I scoff at.
- 31:29And this might start a little mini little conversation.
- 31:32You tell me what you think. I scoff when when there are
- 31:36channels like I'll use Jeff and and I don't.
- 31:41I don't like to do a lot of reaction to what other people
- 31:44are saying or doing, but I have an issue when Jeff calls a
- 31:51prospect an investment, when he says this new quarterback for
- 31:57the, you know, Atlanta Falcons. I think this is a really good
- 32:02investment going into this season.
- 32:04It's like, come on. Yeah, It's it's that's what it
- 32:07is. It's, it's speculating.
- 32:08It's, it's picking a number. Like an investment is putting
- 32:12money in the S&P 500 for 10 years.
- 32:16What is the speculation? Is putting $100 on the number 9
- 32:21on the roulette wheel like that's a speculation and he
- 32:24calls it an investment. And that use of terminology of
- 32:29calling a speculative move an investment, That is what I scoff
- 32:35at. But I have no problem if people
- 32:37like playing that dart game of maybe I can hit the right player
- 32:42and it'll go way up or collecting current players or
- 32:45vintage players or it does none of it.
- 32:48I I don't care what people collect, but don't call it an
- 32:51investment when it's a guy who's never taken a snap in the NFL.
- 32:56Come on, give me a break. Yeah, so back to what you said
- 32:59about it's not for me and you like watching those videos.
- 33:03I feel the same way about Youtubers who focus their
- 33:07collections on really scarce vintage cards of players
- 33:12nobody's ever heard of before. It's not for me, but I love
- 33:15watching those videos. Yeah.
- 33:17I The passion these guys have is amazing. 100% I mean, Dan likes
- 33:23Benny cough. He's told me five times why.
- 33:27Benny cough. I don't know.
- 33:29I mean, that's something Jake would ask, though.
- 33:32I mean, it's one of these things where I don't, I don't, I still
- 33:36don't know why Benny Cough is relevant, but he's pumped about
- 33:42when he picks up a Benny cough Cracker Jack card and I'm pumped
- 33:45for him. Like, I get, I get, I love the
- 33:49excitement that anybody has. I mean, when back to Adam
- 33:53Vintage Sanctuary, because he's such a passionate guy, like
- 33:56he'll put together the run of like the, the Redman's, he's got
- 34:02like the 52 Yogi Berra Redman and then the 53 Yogi Berra
- 34:07Redman and the 54. And he puts them up and he's,
- 34:10you know, he, he lays them out together and, and you see the
- 34:13coloring on. It's like, I love that a lot of
- 34:17my favorite stuff is not necessarily stuff that I like,
- 34:21although I do like Redman cards and seeing how fired up people
- 34:26get. I talk all the time about Brian
- 34:29and iconic Brian, the high pop professor and iconic Al.
- 34:32They're two of my favorite channels.
- 34:34And for the most part, at least before a month ago, we didn't
- 34:38collect similarly at all. But he'd get some new, you know,
- 34:41Mirror gold Greg Maddox card and show the shine, and you could
- 34:46just see how excited it was. I love that stuff.
- 34:50Yeah, it's cool. I love 90s refractors and I I
- 34:55mentioned Adam's list. I was on searching for them last
- 34:59night. I did find one.
- 35:01I'm going to buy it tomorrow. Oh, is it an auction or is it a
- 35:05buy it now? It is a buy it now.
- 35:08OK, so by the time this airs you hopefully will have bought it?
- 35:13I will have bought it assuming it's still available I.
- 35:17Now let me ask you that how, how OK this is this is great and and
- 35:22we're at 35 minutes. We don't have a ton of time, but
- 35:25I need to I need to dig because I just shared that I set a new
- 35:29high comp for this Barry Bonds card.
- 35:32And the reason I set a new comp is because I went back and I
- 35:35looked through the previous like 10 or 1293 Finest refractor
- 35:41Barry Bonds is in an 8 and in a nine.
- 35:44And in my opinion, this card was as nice as any of them.
- 35:48And so I felt like I felt like the grade was not in line with
- 35:57the quality of the card. So I was willing to go, you
- 36:02know, 10 percent, 15% above the comps of that normal grade
- 36:06because that card to me was better than the other cards in
- 36:10that normal grade. So this particular card that
- 36:13you're talking about, is it within the normal comp range?
- 36:18And how do you determine what the actual value to you is?
- 36:24This is, this is probably a bigger conversation than we have
- 36:27time for, but this is a little bit over the high.
- 36:34But it's a Pedro Martinez card, it's a rare 1990s Pedro card.
- 36:39And those are way up in value over the last six months like a
- 36:45lot of things are. And the last one that sold I
- 36:47think was like 3 or 4 months ago.
- 36:51And so is it worth paying 10%, probably 20% over the highest
- 36:57comp right now? Yeah, I think it is.
- 37:02And so now I have another question for you too.
- 37:06Are you gonna leave it in that PSA slab?
- 37:09As opposed to what? Cracking it.
- 37:11Why? To try to get it in a higher PSA
- 37:14grade. No, I'm cracking mine.
- 37:18And you're just putting them in one touches.
- 37:20Yep. Really.
- 37:22Yeah, I love if it's, I have a video coming out, I don't know,
- 37:29maybe the same day that this releases.
- 37:31So go check out my channel about cracking and I'm not cracking
- 37:35them yet, but about buying these not terribly common refractors,
- 37:43excuse me, in the low grade that look really, really good and
- 37:48then cracking them. And I think it's a it's a great
- 37:51strategy and I'll talk about that in that video.
- 37:54I think it's a great I, I, I love that if it's in a low
- 38:00grade, if it's in to me, a 90s refractor in an 8 is actually
- 38:08kind of a high grade. A9 to me is a really high grade.
- 38:13So I mean, I'll give you an example just real quick.
- 38:18My dad, my dad was a collected 585960 for, you know, 20 years.
- 38:26Those were the three sets that he got tons of cards from and he
- 38:31ended up selling a lot of his stuff.
- 38:34And he bought really nice undergraded stars from the 58
- 38:40set. And he cracked all of them and
- 38:44he put them in a binder because he does like the way they looked
- 38:47in a binder. And he didn't crack his
- 38:51undergraded 58 mantle and he didn't crack his undergraded 58
- 38:57maze. They're both in five holders.
- 38:59He still has them. And I said, why didn't you crack
- 39:04these ones? If you like them better in
- 39:07binders, why why didn't why didn't you crack these ones?
- 39:10And he goes, they're too valuable to crack.
- 39:13You just can't. You just can't crack a card
- 39:17that's that valuable because if God forbid, something came up,
- 39:24the the value that you've lost by cracking it out is just too
- 39:28much. And I, I really agree with his
- 39:32line of thinking there. And so for me, I think it would
- 39:36look a little bit better in a one touch then it would in APSA
- 39:42holder. But I will say it's a brand new
- 39:45PSA holder. So it's not going to be all
- 39:46scratched up. It's a brand new PSA holder.
- 39:49It was just graded. It'll look as good as it could
- 39:52possibly look in a holder. So I won't crack it.
- 39:56But I love the the concept of buying like 90s refractors and
- 40:02fives. 6 is in my in my case. OK.
- 40:06I think 6 is low grade for a 90s early 2000s refractor.
- 40:12I think they look really, really good in one touches.
- 40:16Really good. So I I mean, I totally get what?
- 40:20I totally get it. Yeah.
- 40:25All right. Well, we're 41 minutes in and
- 40:30yeah, I'm a week. I mean I'm a week away from
- 40:32spring break bro this is like oh I need this spring break so bad.
- 40:37I gotta ask my manager when my spring break is, so we haven't
- 40:40talked about that. I thought you were the manager,
- 40:42now you got the promotion. Everybody has a manager though.
- 40:46I, I, I just got promoted to a higher level of manager, but I
- 40:51still have a manager myself. I don't get a spring break I can
- 40:54take there's. One thing about my job that
- 40:57people are jealous of 1 so. There's 2.
- 41:04What's the other one? We can talk about it offline.
- 41:07Oh, OK, now I'm intrigued. I'm also intrigued about this
- 41:12Pedro card. Next week, you're going to have
- 41:14to let us know if you got it, and then you're going to have to
- 41:17talk about what the card is in particular because we want to
- 41:21know for sure. So all right, bud, as always, I
- 41:26really look forward to these conversations.
- 41:28They're very fun for me. I hope they are at least mildly
- 41:31entertaining for you, Mike. And if anybody's still
- 41:35listening, they either fell asleep or they enjoyed it too.
- 41:41I had a great time too. All right.
- 41:44Thanks, Greg.
