Latest / Stugotz and Company / Set 2: Lane Can't Help Himself (w/ Rece Davis)
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: It's the best show on TV, and Reese Davis is
- 0:24Speaker 1: the host.
- 0:24Speaker 2: College game day.
- 0:25Speaker 1: They'll be in Knoxville, Tennessee this weekend. Texas at Tennessee.
- 0:29Speaker 1: We'll get to that in just a second. I'm wondering here,
- 0:32Speaker 1: Reese Davis. Was the scene in Oxford, Mississippi, where does
- 0:35Speaker 1: that rank for you? You've been doing the show for
- 0:37Speaker 1: so long. Where does that rank for you in terms
- 0:39Speaker 1: of all-time scenes, all-time locations for college game day?
- 0:44Speaker 3: I would say all-time locations and atmosphere and energy for
- 0:48Speaker 3: the show in the morning. It's probably behind Cal and
- 0:54Speaker 3: Washington State. But in terms of pure vitriol for the
- 0:59Speaker 3: entire situation, it is unmatched. I mean, you could feel
- 1:03Speaker 3: that starting on Friday and walking around town. And, you know,
- 1:08Speaker 3: it was fun for us. And we talked about it
- 1:10Speaker 3: for weeks and weeks and weeks. And the thing that
- 1:12Speaker 3: I was most impressed.
- 1:13Speaker 2: With, they booed.
- 1:15Speaker 3: They let it be known that they didn't like Lane
- 1:18Speaker 3: Kiffin and they wanted to extract their figurative pound of flesh.
- 1:22Speaker 3: But they didn't really, at least in our show, they
- 1:24Speaker 3: didn't cross the line. Now, was there some guy in
- 1:27Speaker 3: Vaught-Hemingway that night that probably crossed the line through something?
- 1:30Speaker 2: I'm sure there was.
- 1:32Speaker 3: But in terms of this widespread fear that it was
- 1:35Speaker 3: going to get so unruly, it would be unmanageable, that
- 1:38Speaker 3: was completely unfounded.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I got a kick out of it, and I think
- 1:41Speaker 2: I mentioned it on our podcast.
- 1:43Speaker 3: One of the aggregators and one of the news services
- 1:46Speaker 3: that looks to twist any little thing. I made a
- 1:48Speaker 3: comment because we had to fly over at the beginning
- 1:50Speaker 3: of the Mississippi National Guard. And I just spent this
- 1:54Speaker 3: entire time talking about, you know, Lane Kiffin, they can't
- 1:57Speaker 3: stand him anymore, whatever I used for the scene set.
- 2:00Speaker 3: And I made a comment that, you know, the Mississippi
- 2:04Speaker 3: Air National Guard is here for pageantry and pageantry only.
- 2:08Speaker 3: And somebody twisted it into, I was making some type
- 2:10Speaker 3: of political statement about the use of the military.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I'm like, You people listen at all.
- 2:17Speaker 3: It was a joke about Lane Kiffin, and that had
- 2:20Speaker 3: to be completely obvious to anyone with a functioning brain cell.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Mikey's right, though.
- 2:26Speaker 1: The short answer is no.
- 2:28Speaker 2: The short answer is no. It was intense, man, inside
- 2:34Speaker 2: that stadium. And when he came onto the field, they
- 2:38Speaker 2: wanted it badly.
- 2:40Speaker 3: And, you know, you can get into the deep psychoanalysis
- 2:42Speaker 3: of it. He rejected them. He basically told them they
- 2:45Speaker 3: weren't good enough.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:47Speaker 3: And he left them at a moment when they had
- 2:50Speaker 3: to do something that they hadn't done in generations.
- 2:53Speaker 2: So you're not going to be happy with this person.
- 2:57Speaker 3: But I thought they showed the intensity without going over
- 3:00Speaker 3: the line.
- 3:01Speaker 1: This might be a weird question, but have we already
- 3:04Speaker 1: seen the best college football game of the year?
- 3:06Speaker 4: No.
- 3:10Speaker 3: I don't know that you'll, I don't know that you'll
- 3:12Speaker 3: see one with higher emotional stakes. Right. Yes.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Because it's a.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Different, different emotional stakes than playing for a championship. There
- 3:18Speaker 3: will be more important games.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Right. And, you know, ones that will.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Resonate with the, with the competitors because it will be
- 3:25Speaker 3: playing for championships. But in terms of pure human emotion,
- 3:31Speaker 3: I'm not sure you're going to get more intense than
- 3:33Speaker 3: that one. It was cathartic for Ole Miss people. And
- 3:36Speaker 3: I was, I, uh, I guess I am wading into
- 3:40Speaker 3: the political arena slightly here.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I said tongue firmly planted in cheek.
- 3:44Speaker 3: I couldn't help think of when Tommy Tuberville returned to
- 3:49Speaker 3: Ole Miss with Auburn. Although there was a year in
- 3:52Speaker 3: between there. The first time they played, they played in Auburn.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Then he went back the following year. Auburn won the
- 3:58Speaker 3: game and Tuberville said afterwards, now maybe we can all
- 4:01Speaker 3: get on with our lives. And I sort of feel
- 4:05Speaker 3: like maybe that's the way it is with Lane and
- 4:07Speaker 3: LSU and Ole Miss. Now maybe we, it's always going
- 4:09Speaker 3: to be a thing for Ole Miss fans for sure.
- 4:13Speaker 2: But generally, maybe we all can get on with our
- 4:15Speaker 2: lives now.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Reese, with Lane leaving Ole Miss, it felt like Ole
- 4:19Speaker 4: Miss entered this season with a lot of uncertainty to
- 4:21Speaker 4: what their ceiling could be as a team. Is it
- 4:24Speaker 4: as simple as they can win a national title just
- 4:26Speaker 4: because they have the best quarterback in the country?
- 4:28Speaker 2: Maybe. They have Trinidad and you don't.
- 4:32Speaker 3: And that starts with an advantage every time. There are
- 4:37Speaker 3: some great quarterbacks and great young quarterbacks. He's not invincible.
- 4:40Speaker 3: He made a couple of questionable plays. But he can
- 4:45Speaker 3: elevate everything around him. He can take a play in
- 4:50Speaker 3: which the defense has seemingly won and turn it into
- 4:54Speaker 3: a loss for them.
- 4:56Speaker 2: There aren't a lot of guys that can do that.
- 4:57Speaker 3: And he's got a ton of experience now. He's a
- 4:59Speaker 3: proven winner both at Ferris State and at Ole Miss.
- 5:02Speaker 3: So I do think they can win the national championship
- 5:06Speaker 3: largely because of him. Because I think it's not an
- 5:10Speaker 3: absurd argument to say that LSU on Saturday night, for example,
- 5:16Speaker 3: had the better units at virtually every position with the
- 5:20Speaker 3: exception of quarterback. And Sam Levitt's a good quarterback. He's just,
- 5:24Speaker 3: you know, he's not as well-versed in the system yet,
- 5:27Speaker 3: and I don't think he's as good as Trinidad Chambliss.
- 5:31Speaker 3: So I think that's a huge advantage for him. That said,
- 5:35Speaker 3: I'm fully expecting them to lose in the swamps. I
- 5:39Speaker 3: think Florida can beat them.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Yes. I think Florida's really good too.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:42Speaker 3: But I do think, regardless of what happens, whether Ole
- 5:45Speaker 3: Miss wins or whether Ole Miss loses this weekend, I
- 5:48Speaker 3: think they're a national championship contender for sure.
- 5:50Speaker 5: All right. Reese, what did you make of Lane taking
- 5:52Speaker 5: credit for the atmosphere in Ole Miss, saying, I had
- 5:55Speaker 5: to leave to kind of make this happen?
- 5:57Speaker 2: It was a win-win for him, Reese. It really was.
- 5:59Speaker 2: He can't help himself.
- 6:02Speaker 3: He just simply can't help himself. And the good thing
- 6:06Speaker 3: for us is, look at us. We're getting to talk
- 6:09Speaker 3: about it, and we're all laughing about it because he's
- 6:13Speaker 3: entertaining copy or entertaining content.
- 6:17Speaker 2: And he just is. He's a brilliant coach, too.
- 6:20Speaker 3: But he's got that personality that is polarizing. If he's
- 6:25Speaker 3: your guy, you love him. If he's on the other side,
- 6:28Speaker 3: he's fingernails on a chalkboard. So, you know, it's good.
- 6:32Speaker 3: And he'd gotten so far. He'd come so far.
- 6:35Speaker 6: Yes.
- 6:36Speaker 2: And then just couldn't quite let it go at the end.
- 6:40Speaker 3: I was surprised he didn't make a comment about the
- 6:43Speaker 3: Trinidad Chambliss judge. You know, I think the argument could
- 6:48Speaker 3: be made that Lane started that whole thing to get
- 6:50Speaker 3: him eligible anyway.
- 6:52Speaker 2: And then, so, you know. There were a lot.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Of layers there Saturday night, guys.
- 6:57Speaker 2: A lot of layers. No doubt about it.
- 6:59Speaker 1: The whole argument as to whether or not Lane Kiffin
- 7:01Speaker 1: is good for college football is ridiculous. He's great for
- 7:04Speaker 1: college football, Reese.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Of course he is. Yeah. Yeah. No question.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Reese, if I say to you, I think Miami is
- 7:12Speaker 1: the most talented team in the country, are you going
- 7:15Speaker 1: to argue back and say they're not?
- 7:16Speaker 3: I mean, no.
- 7:17Speaker 5: You agree?
- 7:18Speaker 2: No, I'm not arguing with that at all. Not for
- 7:20Speaker 2: a second.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Okay.
- 7:21Speaker 3: I know they have a lot of holes to fill,
- 7:23Speaker 3: and maybe you could argue that they don't have, you know,
- 7:26Speaker 3: two guys coming off the edge or even one guy's
- 7:29Speaker 3: as good as either of the guys they had last year,
- 7:31Speaker 3: although I think Damon Wilson's a really good player. But, no,
- 7:34Speaker 3: I would not argue with that. I mean, not for
- 7:37Speaker 3: a second. I mean, they're really good. Mince is terrific.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Tony's terrific. I think they're young offensive linemen that have
- 7:44Speaker 3: stepped into larger roles. have been tough and physical, sort
- 7:48Speaker 3: of a reflection of the way Mario coaches. They're clearly
- 7:53Speaker 3: the class of the ACC to me, though I think
- 7:55Speaker 3: Louisville's really good and SMU also. But no, you say
- 7:59Speaker 3: that to me, they're the most talented team.
- 8:01Speaker 2: I would go, yeah, that's a good argument. No problem
- 8:04Speaker 2: with that.
- 8:05Speaker 1: One of the great things about the college football playoff,
- 8:07Speaker 1: there are many great things about it, but you get
- 8:10Speaker 1: these kind of de facto playoff games early in the season,
- 8:13Speaker 1: and I feel like we have one already. Tell me
- 8:15Speaker 1: if you agree. with LSU and Texas A & M.
- 8:17Speaker 1: It feels like the loser is not going to make
- 8:19Speaker 1: the playoffs.
- 8:20Speaker 5: Is that fair?
- 8:22Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:23Speaker 3: I don't think they'll be mathematically or eliminated, you know, officially,
- 8:28Speaker 3: but it will be practical elimination for the loser of
- 8:32Speaker 3: that game because then you're expecting them almost certainly to
- 8:35Speaker 3: run the table. You know, there's probably a scenario where
- 8:39Speaker 3: one of them could lose one more game, assuming that
- 8:41Speaker 3: they also have good wins there. But I haven't seen
- 8:45Speaker 3: anything from A & M up to this point that
- 8:47Speaker 3: would make me think that they are a playoff team
- 8:50Speaker 3: in any respect. And not just the Kentucky game.
- 8:53Speaker 2: I watched the.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Arizona State game pretty closely. And while they ended up winning,
- 8:58Speaker 3: I think, 48-20 if memory serves. And I don't want
- 9:02Speaker 3: to diminish this because everything that happens in a game counts.
- 9:04Speaker 3: And you get credit for it when you make it happen.
- 9:07Speaker 3: But they returned a couple of interceptions for a touchdown.
- 9:10Speaker 2: One of them a little.
- 9:11Speaker 3: I don't want to say flukish, but a little unusual.
- 9:14Speaker 3: And then they also recovered a muffed kick, which they
- 9:17Speaker 3: also get credit for, and had a very short drive
- 9:19Speaker 3: for a touchdown. So they put three scores on the
- 9:23Speaker 3: board in what you might deem as fortuitous ways.
- 9:28Speaker 2: It was a really close game.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Otherwise, and at times, Arizona State looked like maybe the
- 9:32Speaker 3: better team at times.
- 9:34Speaker 2: A & M deserves credit. They made the plays. They
- 9:36Speaker 2: won the game.
- 9:37Speaker 3: They pulled away. I'm not trying to undercut that. They
- 9:40Speaker 3: had 255 yards of offense in that game. They got
- 9:42Speaker 3: pushed around by Kentucky. I haven't seen anything that makes
- 9:46Speaker 3: me think they can win in Baton Rouge or be
- 9:49Speaker 3: a playoff team. But as I always like to say,
- 9:52Speaker 3: there's no rule that says you can't improve as the.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Season goes along. And I think A & M has
- 9:56Speaker 2: room for improvement and maybe they will. Maybe it'll make sense.
- 10:00Speaker 2: itself Saturday.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Reece, sticking in the SEC, I've been telling anybody who
- 10:04Speaker 4: will listen about Kamario Taylor at Mississippi State.
- 10:08Speaker 2: So good.
- 10:08Speaker 4: What is Mississippi State's ceiling as a team? Because it
- 10:12Speaker 4: doesn't feel like they have the greatest roster, but that
- 10:15Speaker 4: quarterback covers a lot of holes that they potentially do have.
- 10:18Speaker 2: 100% agree with you.
- 10:21Speaker 3: He's got, I was just talking to my son about
- 10:23Speaker 3: him a couple of hours ago. And I said, you know,
- 10:26Speaker 3: he's like, he's like maybe a two or three inches
- 10:29Speaker 3: shorter Cam Newton. Just because, I mean, but he's not,
- 10:33Speaker 3: he's probably, he probably as a passer, not necessarily a thrower.
- 10:37Speaker 3: He might be a little farther along than Cam was
- 10:40Speaker 3: in college in terms of what they asked.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Him to do, but he can run. He's big and strong.
- 10:45Speaker 3: He's got just an absolute, howitzer of an arm but
- 10:50Speaker 3: I think the thing that I really liked about him
- 10:53Speaker 3: Saturday was he threw an interception on his first pass
- 10:57Speaker 3: against South Carolina I think they had a terrible first
- 11:00Speaker 3: quarter I may be off with the numbers but they
- 11:01Speaker 3: had something like five yards of offense or some such
- 11:04Speaker 3: thing almost through the whole first quarter and then he
- 11:07Speaker 3: settled into the game and got hot and he just
- 11:10Speaker 3: he he's very calm and he seems like he really
- 11:13Speaker 3: is is in sync with what Jeff Levy wants him
- 11:16Speaker 3: to do And I think sort of like we were
- 11:19Speaker 3: talking about with Trinidad. Now, Trinidad's farther along than Camario is, obviously,
- 11:24Speaker 3: because he's.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Played a lot more. But they cover a multitude of sins.
- 11:29Speaker 3: And because of that, and the way the game is
- 11:31Speaker 3: in college, if you have a guy like that at
- 11:33Speaker 3: that position, you know, I don't view Mississippi State as
- 11:36Speaker 3: a playoff contender, even with him. But, you know, can
- 11:39Speaker 3: they bounce back from what they did a year ago
- 11:41Speaker 3: and win seven or eight games? pull off an upset.
- 11:44Speaker 3: They've got Alabama in a week, and Starkville. I mean,
- 11:48Speaker 3: those cowbells will be ringing that day. And cowbell's not
- 11:52Speaker 3: your biggest problem anymore when you go to Starkville. It's
- 11:55Speaker 3: Kamario Taylor. So can they knock off somebody? Can they
- 11:59Speaker 3: win eight and maybe be a thorn in the side
- 12:01Speaker 3: for a playoff team?
- 12:02Speaker 2: 100%. And I think that would be be how I
- 12:06Speaker 2: would view their ceiling.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Reese, how great is that kid going to look in
- 12:09Speaker 1: a Miami uniform next year? It's not going to happen.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I shouldn't say so so definitively. I'm sure you guys
- 12:17Speaker 2: will go after him down there because you go after everybody. But,
- 12:20Speaker 2: you know.
- 12:22Speaker 3: He has a really– he grew up wanting to go
- 12:25Speaker 3: there to Mississippi State. He grew up close by. His
- 12:29Speaker 3: uncle was a quarterback and a wide receiver there. Omar Connors,
- 12:33Speaker 3: very good player. Mom and dad, both lifelong state fans.
- 12:37Speaker 3: And one of the things, though he was a coveted recruit,
- 12:41Speaker 3: when they made the coaching change, one of his, I
- 12:43Speaker 3: read an article about this the other day, that one
- 12:45Speaker 3: of his biggest fears initially was.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Am I going to get to go to Mississippi State?
- 12:50Speaker 2: Now it's a different era.
- 12:51Speaker 3: I know things can change, but I will be, I think,
- 12:55Speaker 3: My gut tells me he will finish his college career
- 12:59Speaker 3: as a Mississippi State Bulldog.
- 13:01Speaker 2: But I'm sure you'll try, Stu. I'm sure you'll try. Oh,
- 13:05Speaker 2: I will.
- 13:05Speaker 4: Reese, I'm a University of North Carolina graduate, and the
- 13:09Speaker 4: only thing better to me than a Tar Heel win
- 13:12Speaker 4: is an NC State loss. And I don't think we've
- 13:16Speaker 4: ever seen anything like NC State Vanderbilt this weekend. What
- 13:20Speaker 4: were your thoughts on that game, how that one ended?
- 13:24Speaker 2: You played. I've seen a lot of weird endings.
- 13:28Speaker 3: I mean, I've been hosting college game day now my
- 13:30Speaker 3: 12th season. I've been working college football for ESPN for
- 13:34Speaker 3: 26 years and working for ESPN for 30, 31. So
- 13:40Speaker 3: I guess 27 or 28 years in the studio and
- 13:43Speaker 3: game day combined. I've seen a lot of games and
- 13:46Speaker 3: I grew up loving this sport and I've seen a
- 13:47Speaker 3: lot of weird fluky endings. I've never seen anything like that.
- 13:51Speaker 3: My suggestion to an NC State friend of mine was
- 13:55Speaker 3: I said, I think you have a couple of options
- 13:57Speaker 3: after losing a game like this. One option is to
- 14:03Speaker 3: say that the rest of my season is in an
- 14:05Speaker 3: infinite lightning delay and just not play anymore and regroup
- 14:09Speaker 3: for next year. There's also the potential of disbanding the program.
- 14:13Speaker 3: You could consider that after a loss like that.
- 14:17Speaker 2: And then the other, I guess, is what they'll probably
- 14:20Speaker 2: do is soldier on. I'm actually fascinated by.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Their game against Appalachian State this week because how in
- 14:27Speaker 3: the world do you come back from that? I mean,
- 14:30Speaker 3: they're already reeling a little bit. They've played really well
- 14:33Speaker 3: in the game. Look, CJ's a great player. I hated
- 14:37Speaker 3: to see that. I didn't see that happen to anybody.
- 14:39Speaker 3: I hated to see it happen to him. But when
- 14:42Speaker 3: you lose one like that, man, how do you come
- 14:45Speaker 3: back from that? It'll be a fascinating study to see
- 14:50Speaker 3: if they show up flat or if they do what
- 14:53Speaker 3: we're told that you're supposed to do in sports and
- 14:56Speaker 3: turn the page and be on to Appalachian State or
- 15:00Speaker 3: on to Cincinnati, as it were.

- 16:54Speaker 1: Reese, how do you think the committee, as the season
- 16:57Speaker 1: moves along here, and Michigan has a big game coming
- 17:00Speaker 1: up this weekend, but how do you think they'll handle
- 17:02Speaker 1: that first win for Michigan, the first win of the season?
- 17:07Speaker 3: I think you have no choice, Stu, but to treat
- 17:09Speaker 3: it as a win. Now, what I think is incumbent
- 17:13Speaker 3: on the committee in all games, not just this one,
- 17:16Speaker 3: but in all games, the reason we have them to
- 17:19Speaker 3: employ their subjective tactics evaluation of these games and teams
- 17:23Speaker 3: is how did you play right so i think that
- 17:26Speaker 3: you look at it and say how did they play
- 17:28Speaker 3: how do they play in these games going forward if
- 17:30Speaker 3: it is if it's an aberration and they're really good
- 17:34Speaker 3: and playing well by the end of the season then
- 17:36Speaker 3: i i don't think you put much stock in it
- 17:39Speaker 3: at all right to be honest yes but if they
- 17:41Speaker 3: put together but if they put together um i don't
- 17:44Speaker 3: know let's say a 9-3 record and they're kind of
- 17:47Speaker 3: on the cusp and they haven't looked great then I
- 17:51Speaker 3: think maybe it carries a little more weight because it
- 17:53Speaker 3: then becomes a continuation of something you.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Saw the rest of the season.
- 17:56Speaker 3: But if they're 10-2 and if they handle Iowa this
- 18:03Speaker 3: weekend and if they play well against Ohio State and
- 18:06Speaker 3: they're looking like a team, then I think you don't
- 18:08Speaker 3: do much with it except treat it as a win.
- 18:11Speaker 2: That's the way I look at it anyway.
- 18:14Speaker 5: Reese, you've been doing College Game Day for 12 years,
- 18:17Speaker 5: and I'm sure you get asked all the time, what
- 18:18Speaker 5: was the best one, what's the best one? but I
- 18:20Speaker 5: want to ask it a little differently. I want to
- 18:22Speaker 5: ask you to power rank these things in terms of
- 18:26Speaker 5: what makes a great.
- 18:27Speaker 2: College game day.
- 18:28Speaker 5: Location, rivalry, quality of football, and storylines.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Storylines is number one.
- 18:37Speaker 3: I mean, it just is, but we're on before the game.
- 18:40Speaker 3: So how the game actually turns out is probably last
- 18:44Speaker 3: on that list. So I would say storylines, I guess
- 18:51Speaker 3: I would go rivalry and location because rivalry kind of
- 18:55Speaker 3: feeds into storylines and then location and crowd, which I
- 19:00Speaker 3: would put together sort of give you a great atmosphere
- 19:04Speaker 3: and backdrop. And how the game actually turns out is,
- 19:08Speaker 3: you know, important to ESPN for ratings, but in terms
- 19:12Speaker 3: of making a great college game day, we just need
- 19:14Speaker 3: the storyline buildup.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:16Speaker 3: You know, how the game turns out is sort of,
- 19:18Speaker 3: secondary to what's important to setting us up. The anticipation
- 19:22Speaker 3: for the game is what is most important to us
- 19:25Speaker 3: and to me.
- 19:26Speaker 1: You'll have a great atmosphere. What are you expecting this weekend?
- 19:29Speaker 1: You're in Knoxville, Tennessee, and Texas. Arch coming off that
- 19:32Speaker 1: big win, kind of announced himself. I felt bad for
- 19:34Speaker 1: him the first three quarters, but man, did he have
- 19:37Speaker 1: a fourth quarter for the ages there against Ohio State.
- 19:40Speaker 1: What a great game. What a great location for you, Reese.
- 19:42Speaker 1: What are you expecting? Do you think Tennessee has a
- 19:44Speaker 1: shot here?
- 19:44Speaker 2: I do. I think they have a shot. For a
- 19:49Speaker 2: couple of reasons.
- 19:50Speaker 3: One, their defensive coordinator, Jim Knowles, who is one of
- 19:54Speaker 3: the best in the business, and typically it takes a
- 19:57Speaker 3: year or so for his system to take hold. Remember
- 20:00Speaker 3: when he went to Ohio State, wasn't quite as good
- 20:03Speaker 3: as it was initially as it was at the end.
- 20:07Speaker 3: And he's also 2-0 against Sark. He beat him in
- 20:09Speaker 3: the playoff game, as we know, when.
- 20:11Speaker 2: He was at D.C.
- 20:11Speaker 3: For Ohio State. And when he was at Oklahoma State,
- 20:13Speaker 3: as at D.C., he beat Sark in his first year
- 20:16Speaker 3: at Texas. So I think Jim will throw a lot
- 20:18Speaker 3: of things at Arch. And Arch wasn't razor sharp in
- 20:23Speaker 3: their game last week after Ohio State.
- 20:25Speaker 2: I don't know if it was a hangover or not.
- 20:26Speaker 3: He had a great quarter, and it hasn't been consistent
- 20:32Speaker 3: up to this point. And I think in that atmosphere
- 20:34Speaker 3: and with the Manning name on the back of his jersey,
- 20:36Speaker 3: he you know, there are some things to deal with
- 20:39Speaker 3: in this game too. So I think Tennessee's got a shot.
- 20:42Speaker 3: I believe Texas defense will end up carrying the day.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Tennessee's got a really talented freshman quarterback, but he's a
- 20:49Speaker 3: freshman quarterback, Faison Brandon.
- 20:51Speaker 2: He's going to be really good, or he is good,
- 20:53Speaker 2: but we saw him in.
- 20:54Speaker 3: The passing game against Georgia Tech, the only, you know, high-level,
- 20:59Speaker 3: power-four type opponent he's faced up to this point, complete
- 21:02Speaker 3: a little under 50% of his passes.
- 21:04Speaker 2: They make a couple plays with his feet, threw a
- 21:06Speaker 2: couple of.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Touchdowns, but in terms of consistency, you could see that
- 21:11Speaker 3: he's still growing. Maybe he comes of age. I think
- 21:14Speaker 3: they've got a chance, but I think they'll have to
- 21:16Speaker 3: force Arch into some big mistakes in order to do so.
- 21:19Speaker 3: I think Texas wins the game, but your question was,
- 21:22Speaker 3: does Tennessee have a chance?
- 21:24Speaker 2: And I would say, absolutely.
- 21:26Speaker 4: Reese, does Faison Brandon's name sound like it's on backwards?
- 21:28Speaker 5: No doubt. It does.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Yes. Yes.
- 21:31Speaker 3: I'm still, every time I say it, every time I
- 21:34Speaker 3: say it, I catch myself and wait, I say, wait, wait, wait.
- 21:37Speaker 3: And it's, And look, I know the recruiting background. I
- 21:41Speaker 3: know the story. I've watched the tape.
- 21:43Speaker 2: I've seen him.
- 21:44Speaker 3: And still, it's one of those mental blocks that every
- 21:47Speaker 3: time I'm like, wait, did I say that backwards?
- 21:50Speaker 2: It's so– I think part of it is just the
- 21:52Speaker 2: old man in me. He's like, wait a minute. Did
- 21:54Speaker 2: I get that wrong?
- 21:56Speaker 3: Are the synapses firing the way they're supposed to be? But, yeah,
- 22:02Speaker 3: it gets me every time. And I'm not trying to
- 22:05Speaker 3: make Glider poke fun.
- 22:07Speaker 2: At his name. Not at all. This is on me.
- 22:09Speaker 3: This is not a him problem. This is a me problem.
- 22:12Speaker 3: But immediately it starts clicking. Wait, did I say it
- 22:15Speaker 3: right or did I say it backwards? But I think
- 22:18Speaker 3: everybody's going to know his name pretty soon. He's really good.
- 22:20Speaker 5: Man, did you perk up.
- 22:22Speaker 1: I mean, no question has piqued your interest more than
- 22:25Speaker 1: the question Taylor just asked.
- 22:28Speaker 2: That was delightful.
- 22:29Speaker 3: You should know I thrive on nonsense sometimes.
- 22:33Speaker 2: It kind of works. I know you do.
- 22:36Speaker 1: We'll get you out of here in just a second.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Very quickly, USC, is this the best team Lincoln.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Riley has had at USC?
- 22:42Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 22:44Speaker 3: That first team with Caleb was pretty good, really good offensively,
- 22:47Speaker 3: but I think it probably is. Everybody, I've picked them
- 22:52Speaker 3: to go to the playoff. I think this will be,
- 22:53Speaker 3: if not now, when. And they've got a veteran quarterback.
- 22:57Speaker 3: They are relying on a lot of freshmen, but those
- 22:59Speaker 3: freshmen are supremely talented. They gave up five 75-yard or
- 23:06Speaker 3: longer drives to the stinking Rutgers last weekend, so that
- 23:10Speaker 3: was not exactly a brilliant showing to gear up for
- 23:13Speaker 3: this game. But, you know, Rutgers have lost to UMass,
- 23:18Speaker 3: go across the country sleepy.
- 23:20Speaker 2: You know, I get it. It happens. I think they'll
- 23:23Speaker 2: play really well.
- 23:24Speaker 3: I think this is a real, I think one of
- 23:28Speaker 3: the themes of the week, teams are either desperate or
- 23:31Speaker 3: they'll be defined. And you sort of see both factors
- 23:36Speaker 3: in this game for both teams. I know USC shouldn't
- 23:39Speaker 3: be defined as desperate because they're undefeated, but because of
- 23:42Speaker 3: the things you're talking about, is this Lincoln's best team?
- 23:45Speaker 3: Can they get through and make the playoff? You'll define them,
- 23:49Speaker 3: and you're also a little bit desperate to do that. Oregon,
- 23:51Speaker 3: on the other hand, if Oregon loses this game with
- 23:54Speaker 3: a trip to Ohio State still ahead, Michigan and Washington
- 23:57Speaker 3: still on the schedule, some other perilous Big Ten games,
- 24:01Speaker 3: I mean, they may be all but done. They won't
- 24:05Speaker 3: be mathematically done, but they might be all but done
- 24:08Speaker 3: before the calendar turns to October. And that would have
- 24:10Speaker 3: been unthinkable before the start of the season.
- 24:14Speaker 1: I speak on behalf of this entire show, a Reese
- 24:16Speaker 1: Davis tennis coverage.
- 24:18Speaker 2: What took so long? Mikey, what took so long?
- 24:24Speaker 6: You're great at it.
- 24:25Speaker 4: And of course you are.
- 24:25Speaker 2: You're great, man. No, well, thank you.
- 24:29Speaker 3: And that was, there were many times I felt like
- 24:31Speaker 3: that I would, I'd, you know, taking one of those
- 24:33Speaker 3: Rosetta Stone or Babel classes or whatever those things are,
- 24:37Speaker 3: tried to learn the language, translating it in my head
- 24:39Speaker 3: and then trying to spit it out in semi-coherent fashion
- 24:43Speaker 3: the rest of the way.
- 24:43Speaker 2: But man, it was both of those tournaments were great experiences.
- 24:49Speaker 3: Just absolute rock star analysts all over the place. Roddick
- 24:54Speaker 3: was sensational. All of them were great and couldn't have
- 24:57Speaker 3: been nicer. And they've got a great team behind the scenes.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Got a great researcher, a man called Brian Beasley, who
- 25:04Speaker 3: also does some football work for us.
- 25:06Speaker 2: He's primarily a tennis guy, played tennis in college.
- 25:09Speaker 3: And Beas carried me through that. He really helped me
- 25:14Speaker 3: out in preparation and answering probably what I can only
- 25:19Speaker 3: assume he felt like were nonsense questions you know in
- 25:22Speaker 3: the moment you know two minutes to air and you
- 25:25Speaker 3: know and i'm asking him one more time about some
- 25:28Speaker 3: uh you know something i was planning to say so
- 25:30Speaker 3: i had such a great support team around but it
- 25:32Speaker 3: was really really fun and both experiences were great but
- 25:36Speaker 3: the all england club is you know if you're a
- 25:38Speaker 3: sports fan yeah sports whether you love tennis or not
- 25:41Speaker 3: right um You ought to try that. That's a really,
- 25:45Speaker 3: really cool thing in a special environment.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Those tennis names could be tricky, huh?
- 25:49Speaker 2: I mean, really. Tricky?
- 25:53Speaker 3: I'll give you a little background here. I worked so
- 25:56Speaker 3: freaking hard on that. Then I have one of the
- 25:58Speaker 3: worst moments in television. I know you're going to delve
- 26:00Speaker 3: into it. I'm going to refuse. On the easiest name
- 26:03Speaker 3: of all, I screwed it all up anyway. But I
- 26:06Speaker 3: learned all these names and the WTA and the ATP
- 26:09Speaker 3: have a great thing on their site.
- 26:10Speaker 2: You can listen to the players pronounce their names.
- 26:13Speaker 3: So all in the lead up, I'm learning, learning, learning,
- 26:16Speaker 3: thinking there's an answer key.
- 26:18Speaker 2: There's no answer. Everybody says it differently. And people who
- 26:20Speaker 2: really know the sport say it differently. And because I
- 26:22Speaker 2: was a new guy, you look like the moron. Right. So,
- 26:25Speaker 2: you know, you're you're in there trying to get this right.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Then after I worked the mornings, Malika worked at night
- 26:32Speaker 3: at Wimbledon and would go back and I couldn't see
- 26:34Speaker 3: the ESPN coverage. I would watch the rest of the
- 26:37Speaker 3: coverage on BBC. They do it completely differently. I was
- 26:42Speaker 3: told my friend, my new friend, Jason Goodall, who does
- 26:44Speaker 3: such a tremendous job for us on tennis, told me
- 26:47Speaker 3: that the BBC brings in a linguist. and tells them
- 26:51Speaker 3: that in the native tongue, you have to say it
- 26:53Speaker 3: this way. Therefore, I'm going home after learning all of
- 26:56Speaker 3: these names, players ranked way down the list, then finding
- 27:00Speaker 3: out that the people who cover tennis all the time
- 27:02Speaker 3: say them slightly differently. And then I'm going home to
- 27:06Speaker 3: the BBC on their home tournament, and they're saying.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Djokovic instead of Djokovic.
- 27:12Speaker 4: And I'm like.
- 27:15Speaker 2: The lesson was just learn it. There is no– this
- 27:19Speaker 2: is not algebra.
- 27:20Speaker 3: There's no definitive answer key about how to say the
- 27:25Speaker 3: various names.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Right, because you can't say Djokovic. If you do, you
- 27:29Speaker 1: know the blowback you're going to get from the American audience, right?
- 27:32Speaker 5: Precisely.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Here's the one. Here's the one. It's the new number
- 27:36Speaker 2: one and the U.S. Open champion on the women's side,
- 27:40Speaker 2: Elena Rabakina, right?
- 27:41Speaker 3: Yep. Our written pronunciation guide and listening to her pronounce
- 27:47Speaker 3: her own name on the WTA site, she says Rabikina,
- 27:53Speaker 3: which I thought is sort of like one of those
- 27:55Speaker 3: things in football. My rule of thumb has been... If
- 27:58Speaker 3: that's what their mama wants to have them called, then
- 28:01Speaker 3: that's what I'm going to say.
- 28:03Speaker 2: And so she said Rabikina. I'm thinking this is it.
- 28:06Speaker 2: The blowback I got on Rabikina, I'm like, she says it.
- 28:11Speaker 2: And it's also written that way phonetically in her guide.
- 28:14Speaker 2: I finally, I gave up.
- 28:16Speaker 3: I acquiesced to the full-time tennis people who kind of
- 28:19Speaker 3: gave it more of an ah than an ah.
- 28:21Speaker 2: And I was like, I give up. I give up.
- 28:23Speaker 2: So that's what I'm going to do. She's a great player,
- 28:26Speaker 2: however you pronounce her name.
- 28:29Speaker 1: I was glad to see you doing it. You're great
- 28:31Speaker 1: at it. Final question on the way out here. We've
- 28:33Speaker 1: asked every guest this question. And, guys, I feel like
- 28:36Speaker 1: this is the person who should decide this.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Indiana.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Okay, he's the host of College Game Day. I think
- 28:42Speaker 1: he has earned the right to decide this.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Indiana.
- 28:46Speaker 5: Football school, basketball school.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Which one?
- 28:51Speaker 3: I'm not trying to split the baby. But historically, there's
- 28:55Speaker 3: certainly a basketball school. Yes. But, but, if you're talking
- 29:00Speaker 3: about the Rick Pitino precious present, that's football school.
- 29:05Speaker 2: I mean, you know, come on. It's a long-range streak.
- 29:10Speaker 2: National champions, basketball's, you know, scuffled a bit. Yes. Precious
- 29:14Speaker 2: present football, historically, clearly basketball.
- 29:17Speaker 1: If we're being honest, all the basketball schools wish they
- 29:20Speaker 1: were football schools.
- 29:21Speaker 2: I mean... That's where the money is.
- 29:23Speaker 1: That's where the money is. Reese, we appreciate it. Enjoy
- 29:26Speaker 1: Knoxville this weekend. Tell McAfee to slow down, man. I'm
- 29:29Speaker 1: concerned about it.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Why would I do that? Why? He's on too many things.
- 29:34Speaker 4: He is rolling. He is giving away way too much money.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Way too much.
- 29:39Speaker 5: I'm going to say he's going to go broke.
- 29:40Speaker 6: I mean, what about the kickers we found? And I'm
- 29:45Speaker 6: telling you, this is a, this is a random draw.
- 29:48Speaker 6: I mean, it's the 300 people. And I think it's
- 29:50Speaker 6: 300 could be wrong about the number, but it's just
- 29:52Speaker 6: a few hundred.
- 29:53Speaker 2: I think it's 300. They get a number.
- 29:56Speaker 3: It's randomly drawn, and the last two guys have just, like,
- 30:00Speaker 3: unleashed a bomb.
- 30:02Speaker 2: You know?
- 30:03Speaker 4: Reese, the Ole Miss kicker, if you told me that
- 30:05Speaker 4: was Brandon Aubrey, I would have believed you. Man.
- 30:09Speaker 3: I mean, you know, Pat said afterwards, Pat said that
- 30:11Speaker 3: guy should be kicking someplace. Right.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Because he's like that. He's like, that was like legit. Yes.
- 30:18Speaker 2: It was something. Both of them were. The barefoot guy
- 30:21Speaker 2: in Texas.
- 30:21Speaker 3: Now, he wasn't as good inside the stadium when Tito's
- 30:24Speaker 3: gave him even more money.
- 30:25Speaker 2: He didn't make it.
- 30:26Speaker 3: But I thought the first one, the barefoot kid, it
- 30:29Speaker 3: kicked Texas. I thought it was going into DKR.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, it exploded. And the thing at Ole Miss.
- 30:35Speaker 2: The Ole Miss guy was like, yeah, tee that thing up,
- 30:38Speaker 2: Herb Street. Boom. There was nothing. He was like, yeah, bam.
- 30:45Speaker 1: I love how excited Herbie gets because McAfee has to
- 30:47Speaker 1: give away more money.
- 30:50Speaker 2: Oh, it's so great.
- 30:51Speaker 1: What a great wrinkle to a show that was already
- 30:54Speaker 1: the best show on TV. Reese, we appreciate it. Enjoy
- 30:57Speaker 1: Knoxville this weekend, man. It's been a great season so far,
- 31:00Speaker 1: and we're just getting started. So enjoy Knoxville.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Thanks for having me, guys.
- 31:03Speaker 1: All right, you got it, man.
- 31:04Speaker 5: Thank you for doing it.
