- 0:00Speaker 1: But joining me on the line right now it is
- 0:02Speaker 1: the Minister for Women and we are due to catch
- 0:05Speaker 1: up with her about International Women's Day, but she is
- 0:07Speaker 1: also the Minister for Education. Lauren Moss. Good morning to
- 0:11Speaker 1: your minister.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Good morning Katie, and good morning to your listeners.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Now, Minister, obviously you know we are do to speak
- 0:19Speaker 1: about International Women's Day, and we will get to that
- 0:21Speaker 1: in a minute. But there is very much a situation
- 0:25Speaker 1: that's unfolded in Palmerston this morning. The details at this
- 0:29Speaker 1: point in time have not been confirmed. The Northern Territory
- 0:32Speaker 1: Police say that they have responded to a critical incident
- 0:36Speaker 1: in Palmerston and there's no danger from this incident to
- 0:40Speaker 1: the wider community. Minister, it is in the vicinity of
- 0:44Speaker 1: the Gray School there. What have you been told at
- 0:47Speaker 1: this point.
- 0:49Speaker 2: So, Katie, as you said, it's very much unfolding at present.
- 0:54Speaker 2: So I am aware that it's close fior to the
- 0:59Speaker 2: school there stand that parents obviously trying to contact the school.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I understand that the schools still operating as normal at
- 1:08Speaker 2: this point in time, and police are obviously their operations
- 1:12Speaker 2: underway and they have made the area safe for the
- 1:17Speaker 2: wider community. So at this point, I'm my officers on
- 1:22Speaker 2: the phone to the department and it's it's very much
- 1:25Speaker 2: an unsolding situation case.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and look, I know that you probably have as
- 1:31Speaker 1: much information as we do at this point, which isn't
- 1:34Speaker 1: a great deal. But to those parents out there listening
- 1:37Speaker 1: this morning whose children are at the Gray School, what
- 1:40Speaker 1: would you say to them right now?
- 1:43Speaker 2: Obviously, our schools work incredibly hard to have procedures in
- 1:47Speaker 2: place where they need to have them, and police, I
- 1:50Speaker 2: have absolutely no doubt, will have been working with the
- 1:53Speaker 2: school and anybody else around in close proximity to make
- 1:57Speaker 2: sure that safety is maintained. So look, I'm sure the
- 2:00Speaker 2: school is working very very hard to get information out
- 2:03Speaker 2: as quickly as it can and that they will do that.
- 2:07Speaker 1: But Minister, there's nothing to suggest at this point that
- 2:10Speaker 1: anything's gone on at the school. It is very much
- 2:13Speaker 1: outside the school, isn't it.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I have absolutely nothing to suggest that that this has
- 2:19Speaker 2: related to anything that has happened within the school.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Yeah, no, all right, Well, we will certainly keep everybody
- 2:24Speaker 1: up to date with any further information as it comes
- 2:27Speaker 1: to hand, and we do appreciate the fact that you
- 2:29Speaker 1: know that there is so much information still flowing through,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and as you've just said, your office is indeed in
- 2:34Speaker 1: contact with the Education Department and the Police at the
- 2:37Speaker 1: moment trying to ascertain or trying to get a bit
- 2:39Speaker 1: further info as well.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely, and I'm sure you know, as you said,
- 2:44Speaker 2: you'll be keeping people updated as well, Katie, as well
- 2:47Speaker 2: as school. But I understand, you know, it's obviously a
- 2:50Speaker 2: situation that will make people feel anxious as well. But
- 2:53Speaker 2: I'm sure police are doing a great job out there.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Yeah, Now, the Minister, I know that today is obviously
- 3:00Speaker 1: International Women's Day. It is a day for you know,
- 3:04Speaker 1: for celebration within the community, a day to really focus
- 3:07Speaker 1: on our wonderful women and also you know, talk about
- 3:10Speaker 1: our diversity and equality. And I understand that it's something
- 3:16Speaker 1: that the that the Government is obviously doing on this
- 3:19Speaker 1: International Women's Day with some grants which have been announced.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Yeah, So we obviously support International Women's Day events every year.
- 3:29Speaker 2: So there are a range of different events from today
- 3:33Speaker 2: that are supported by government, including you know, there was
- 3:38Speaker 2: a great workshop today with Rebecca Forrest, who's obviously one
- 3:41Speaker 2: of our Anti Australians of the Year this year, and
- 3:46Speaker 2: went off to Canberra there's a Multicultural Council of the
- 3:49Speaker 2: Northern Territory event on Saturday. Music and Tea are holding
- 3:53Speaker 2: their own event today as well around gender equality in
- 3:57Speaker 2: the music industry. So there's some really important conversations going
- 4:01Speaker 2: on right across the Northern Territory today. So it's a
- 4:04Speaker 2: day of celebration, but it's also a day when we
- 4:07Speaker 2: need to focus on those issues that still continue to
- 4:10Speaker 2: really impact on particularly women, and make sure that we're
- 4:14Speaker 2: all taking action as a community to continue to strive
- 4:17Speaker 2: for equality.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I one hundred percent agree, and I think that it
- 4:21Speaker 1: is something that we've got to do, you know, so
- 4:24Speaker 1: that our daughters and also our you know, our whether
- 4:27Speaker 1: you're the parent of girls or boys, but so that
- 4:29Speaker 1: we're raising our kids, you know, to really make sure
- 4:32Speaker 1: that they do treat each other equally, but also that
- 4:34Speaker 1: we obviously are treating them equally.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, And I think you know, I know, I've
- 4:41Speaker 2: obviously got a young daughter, and I think about these
- 4:44Speaker 2: issues a lot, and you know, the way that she's
- 4:47Speaker 2: going to grow up and the sorts of things that
- 4:49Speaker 2: she will you know, need to deal with in her life.
- 4:53Speaker 2: But I know as well, for those who are raising
- 4:55Speaker 2: young boys, you know, it is so incredibly important that
- 4:58Speaker 2: we are role model just expression and being okay with
- 5:05Speaker 2: boys and young men expressing themselves and being emotionally literate
- 5:09Speaker 2: and understanding what respectful relationships and boundaries and all of
- 5:14Speaker 2: those things are. And you know, that's a big thing
- 5:18Speaker 2: I think for all of us. But that's the thing
- 5:21Speaker 2: that's going to really change and challenge those deeper inequalities
- 5:26Speaker 2: that we see in our community.
- 5:28Speaker 1: And Minister, I know, ordinarily it would be a you know,
- 5:31Speaker 1: we'd be obviously much more much sort of more excited
- 5:34Speaker 1: about International Women's Star. I know this other news that's
- 5:37Speaker 1: unfolded obviously in Palmerston has certainly changed you know what
- 5:41Speaker 1: we've been discussing throughout the morning. But it is. It
- 5:44Speaker 1: is going to be a great day. I know that
- 5:45Speaker 1: there's going to be so many women out there celebrating,
- 5:48Speaker 1: but so many men as well out there, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 1: celebrating the wonderful women in the community.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Absolutely, and I think, you know, there's some great things
- 5:58Speaker 2: for us to be talking about. Consent education right across
- 6:02Speaker 2: the country that's going to become mandatory from twenty twenty
- 6:07Speaker 2: three in every Australian school. You know, there are so
- 6:10Speaker 2: many really important things that we can talk about not
- 6:13Speaker 2: only today, but I think throughout the year. But there's
- 6:16Speaker 2: certainly a lot going on twenty twenty two that you know,
- 6:20Speaker 2: there's been a lot going on. I know we look
- 6:22Speaker 2: down south and see you know, floods and its COVID
- 6:26Speaker 2: and there's a lot of things going on. But it
- 6:28Speaker 2: is really important that we continue to have a focus
- 6:32Speaker 2: on these issues that are ongoing, you know, domestic family,
- 6:36Speaker 2: sexual violence, equal opportunity for women. It's really important that
- 6:40Speaker 2: we continue to take action on those issues that continue
- 6:44Speaker 2: on generation after generation.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Yeah, it really is. Well. Minister for Education and also
- 6:50Speaker 1: Minister for Women, thank you very much for your time
- 6:52Speaker 1: this morning, and we appreciate you speaking with us.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Thank you, Katie, thank you
