- 0:11What's going on? Everybody All right, it's
- 0:13Wednesday crazy week again. I told you, hopefully you got a
- 0:17chance yesterday to watch the episode of myself and Joe Perot.
- 0:23You know Joe from Sports Cards Live Awesome.
- 0:27He's a he's a regular on the awesome live stream from Jeremy
- 0:31Lee on Saturday nights. Joe and I have become pretty
- 0:34good friends and I really enjoyed hearing what his take
- 0:39was on his current status and the of, of the, of the hobby of,
- 0:44of collecting of all this news that's been going on.
- 0:48And I think that it was important for me to not just
- 0:52share, well, this is what Greg thinks.
- 0:55And so since I think this certain way and I'm feeling a
- 0:59certain way, then everybody must feel that way.
- 1:02That is not how I operate. I thought it was important to
- 1:07hear from another long time collector, hear what he felt
- 1:12things are like right now, Some of his frustrations and he
- 1:17really has some frustrations with grading, with valuation,
- 1:24with potentially auction houses. And that was the discussion
- 1:28yesterday. So now the next two days, we're
- 1:31going to talk to some people in the industry to kind of hear
- 1:36where they're at and what sorts of changes they might be making
- 1:40or what sorts of things are in their systems to help us through
- 1:47the recovery process of some of the trauma that some of us have
- 1:52been going through. But today is Q&A day.
- 1:56And remember, if you have a question for an upcoming
- 1:59episode, simply ask it down below in the comments.
- 2:03Now I'm just going to say it. Next week I think I might be
- 2:09taking my first week off of Wednesday.
- 2:13Q&A for almost three years to well over 2 1/2 years.
- 2:20Closer to three years than 2 1/2 years every single Wednesday.
- 2:25But that doesn't mean I won't have an episode, it just won't
- 2:30be Q&A. Finally I will be posting this
- 2:36insane pre war collection, most of which of the cards are still
- 2:42ungraded. Some of the most expensive
- 2:45cards, Ruth Cobbs, Ruth Ruth cards ungraded, Ty Cobb cards
- 2:52ungraded, Shoeless Joe Jackson card ungraded, and I would say
- 2:59at least fifty other Hall of Farmers at least in ungraded
- 3:05condition. That episode is either going to
- 3:09post on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.
- 3:13And just as a little tip also, a lot of these cards are going to
- 3:20be for sale. You'll have to tune in to see
- 3:24how you can get a piece of some of these cards, but that's going
- 3:28to be Wednesday. So I think next Wednesday I'm
- 3:32just going to enjoy Thanksgiving with my family and not do AQ and
- 3:36a episode next week. But if you have a question,
- 3:39still ask it. It'll just show up the following
- 3:42Wednesday. All right, lots of great
- 3:45questions. I'm sharing my thoughts.
- 3:48Again, just one guy's opinion about pretty much anything
- 3:53you're interested in regarding the hobby.
- 3:56First question right here, this week's first.
- 4:01Question says hi Greg, fellow teacher here.
- 4:04Thanks for taking my question. I'm an 80s kid who still enjoys
- 4:08junk wax. My question for you is if you
- 4:12had to pick three cards that haven't really caught fire from
- 4:15that era, IE the way the 89 Griffey upper deck where the
- 4:20Billy Ripken error card has, what 3 would you choose and have
- 4:25a chance of shooting up in value?
- 4:27Thanks again, Joe. OK.
- 4:32This is a good question. Now I I have to give my
- 4:35disclaimer, this is not an investment channel.
- 4:40I do not have investment liability insurance.
- 4:44So this is for entertainment purposes only.
- 4:49I will give you some things that I find to be a little bit
- 4:54intriguing that aren't completely unaffordable yet and
- 5:01are somewhat even available. When I think of, and I'm
- 5:08assuming again, that you're asking about cards from that
- 5:11kind of junk wax era, which a lot of people call it the high
- 5:14population era. We'll say the early to mid 80s
- 5:19to the mid 90s. So 82 ish to 97 ish is the era
- 5:27that I think that you're asking about.
- 5:29So what are some cards that I think have potential but haven't
- 5:35yet really gone bonkers? Some of the cards that are very
- 5:41popular from that era are Cal Ripken rookie cards.
- 5:46I guess that would be a little bit before the Cal Ripken rookie
- 5:48card would be a little bit before, let's just say from 1980
- 5:52to 2000, the Cal Ripken rookie card, very popular.
- 5:58Tony Gwynn cards, Don Mattingly cards, Ken Griffey junior cards.
- 6:04Those guys are very popular. We're the guys for us in our 40s
- 6:10and early 50s growing up and a lot of us want those cards.
- 6:14And one of the reasons we want those cards is for nostalgia's
- 6:17sake. But they're very, very high in
- 6:20population. So the question that you're
- 6:24asking is interesting because when you say what has a a chance
- 6:28of going way up, the only card that is really high population
- 6:34but is also really gone up is that Ken Griffey junior card and
- 6:40other cards haven't done that, that had that kind of
- 6:44population. In order for a card to really
- 6:48increase in value, it has to have either a low supply or a
- 6:54very high demand. And the Ken Griffey Junior card,
- 6:58I think there's a lot of nostalgia of people that are in
- 7:02their 40s and 50s saying that was the card as a kid and I want
- 7:07the card. So what's the next one?
- 7:13Well, hold on, let me look at my crystal ball.
- 7:15Oh no, that's a Magic 8 ball. I don't know.
- 7:18You don't know. None of us know.
- 7:20But I want to use those parameters that I was just
- 7:22talking about, those tools that I was just talking about to look
- 7:26at some possibilities. So if it's really, really high
- 7:30in population, it would have to have an insane demand.
- 7:35I don't really see that happening outside of a card like
- 7:40the 89 Upper deck. Ken Griffey Junior, because you
- 7:43could make the argument that might be the most iconic card in
- 7:47the history of the hobby. It's definitely in the top five.
- 7:52I think it's for sure in the top three.
- 7:54And you can make the argument that it's #1 there's not another
- 7:57card that is the most iconic card in the history of the
- 8:01hobby, let alone in that period of time.
- 8:03So there won't be a card that can reach that kind of demand
- 8:06and do this sort of thing. So then you have to look at the
- 8:09supply piece. What is something that I could
- 8:13see some people having some demand in, but right now there's
- 8:19not a ton of demand in it, but there could be future demand in
- 8:24it and the supply is lower than something like the Ken Griffey
- 8:28Junior or the, I don't know, Jose Canseco rookie card or
- 8:34whatever. I would lean towards.
- 8:38And I did a video on this like literally like 3 years ago.
- 8:43Minor league cards, some of the minor league cards like Kang
- 8:48Griffey Junior has a couple of minor league cards, and the
- 8:52population of those cards is so much less than the 89 upper
- 8:58deck. I think that those minor league
- 9:02cards of Kang Griffey Junior seem to be kind of overlooked.
- 9:07They're very affordable still. I think that has potential.
- 9:12I think Don Mattingly has a couple of minor league cards
- 9:16that are still very affordable. Ricky Henderson's minor league
- 9:22card is really, really low population compared to his
- 9:27rookie card and it's not cheap, but it's not crazy.
- 9:35Cal Ripken minor league cards, but but I think there's this
- 9:40sort of so I'm throwing a bunch of darts and that's all I feel
- 9:46like I'm doing right now is I'm just throwing darts because none
- 9:49of us know. But I think some of the minor
- 9:51league cards have a lot of potential.
- 9:53So let me go with this. When you look at what cards take
- 9:58off, like why has the Ken Griffey junior taken off over
- 10:03the last two 3-4 years? Even you could go back 567
- 10:07years. Part of the reason is the the
- 10:11jump in the hobby, but part of the reason is people in my
- 10:16generation have started to get to the point where they are
- 10:21starting to make a little bit more money.
- 10:23I mean, that must be nice. You guys will have to tell me
- 10:25all about it down below. What it what that would feel
- 10:27like. But they're starting to make
- 10:29more money. Kids are starting to get older.
- 10:33Maybe they're out of daycare, maybe they're even out of the
- 10:36house at this point. There's more time to get back
- 10:39into the hobby. So what tends to happen is when
- 10:43we get between about 45 and 55, we start to have time and we
- 10:50start to have more money. And because we have a little bit
- 10:53more time and money, then we get back into our hobbies.
- 10:55So a lot of the people from my childhood who grew up wanting
- 11:02that Kangaroo Junior card, those people are at that point.
- 11:06And so that card has jumped. So what I would say is go,
- 11:11what's the iconic player? What's the iconic card?
- 11:16What's the iconic interest in the hobby for the next 5 or 10
- 11:22years? So the people that right now are
- 11:2635 to early 40s, we'll say 35 to even 45, who did they grow up
- 11:35being enamored by? Because Ken Griffey junior is
- 11:38like the guy in baseball for people from 45 to 55.
- 11:42So who was the guy in baseball from that that are now 35 to 45?
- 11:49So now we're talking instead of the late 80s, early 90's, the
- 11:53late 90s, early 2000s. Now, I know the Red Sox fans
- 11:58aren't going to like this, but the guy that was on TV, the guy
- 12:03that was winning, the guy that was getting championships, the
- 12:06guy that was getting all the interviews and attention is
- 12:10Derek Jeter. And I think that Derek Jeter is
- 12:14the guy of that kind of group that's a little bit younger than
- 12:20me and those 35 year olds, you know, who would have been 10
- 12:28when Derek Jeter was winning championships after
- 12:31championships. Those guys are 35 and they're
- 12:37early in their kids situation. They're still fairly early in
- 12:40their career. But over the next 10 years,
- 12:44they'll have more money, they'll have more time.
- 12:48And I think that some of those sorts of guys like Derek Jeter
- 12:54and some of the rarer Derek Jeter cards, some of the rarer
- 12:58Derek Jeter inserts, maybe even some of Derek Jeter's hit his
- 13:07minor league cards. Sorry, I'm getting old.
- 13:10See, See all that white hair? See that white hair?
- 13:12See that white hair? It's proof.
- 13:15But I think Jeter is kind of the guy for that next group that's
- 13:23going to be coming up. Now he has an iconic card, the
- 13:29SP card, But I think that that card might have a little bit of
- 13:36a boost in it. But that card went so nuts
- 13:38during COVID. I think rare Derek Jeter minor
- 13:43league cards, insert cards, early pack pulled autograph
- 13:48cards I could see having some legs but don't go out and invest
- 13:55a bunch of money in them because I literally am just throwing
- 13:59darts. OK I am at the carnival I I
- 14:03bought 5 darts for what would it be now, 10 bucks and I'm finding
- 14:09the area, the cluster where there are the most balloons so I
- 14:12can just easily hit one. I'm not picking the area where
- 14:16there's a balloon here and a balloon here and a balloon here.
- 14:18I'm finding that one patch on the wall still at the carnival
- 14:22where there's lots of balloons so I could hopefully hit
- 14:23something so I can win myself a $0.50 little teddy bear with my
- 14:29$10 investment. This question says question for
- 14:35you good Sir. If sports didn't exist, do you
- 14:38think you would still be a collector?
- 14:41Personally I could see myself getting into stamps or coins but
- 14:45wondered how you felt. Thanks.
- 14:49I have always been kind of a tactile person.
- 14:53I remember as a kid going hiking, going to lakes and
- 14:57rivers and, and searching for rocks and, and coming home with
- 15:02a pocket full of rocks that I would put on my, my shelving
- 15:07unit and would sit there for years and years and years
- 15:11because those were the special rocks that I brought home from,
- 15:15you know, a hike or something going to the ocean.
- 15:17I would hunt for shells and I would hunt for sand dollars and
- 15:21things like that. And those would go up on the
- 15:23shelf too. I've always been a person who
- 15:26was intrigued by collecting things that caught my eye,
- 15:31things that looked unique and special.
- 15:34And it's not a surprise to you. I mean, you guys know that I
- 15:39collect non sport cards as well. Like in last month I bought a an
- 15:45autographed goonies card. I mean, who does that?
- 15:49Well, I did. I bought an autographed back to
- 15:53the future card a few months ago.
- 15:55So those aren't sports related. My pirate set, not sport
- 15:59related. I'm starting to work on a couple
- 16:01of other sets of of non sport cards that aren't sport related.
- 16:07So I absolutely would still be a collector.
- 16:10So what do I collect besides those non sport cards and
- 16:15besides those things that I mentioned to you all many times?
- 16:21Well, I have mentioned a couple of times that I have gotten into
- 16:24collecting video games. I mean, we all remember RBI
- 16:27baseball. I think I've shown this one
- 16:30before. I haven't stopped collecting
- 16:33video games. I just, I just don't talk about
- 16:35it a lot because the channel is about cards.
- 16:39So I don't know which of these I've shown in which I haven't.
- 16:41But here's the first year of Madden Football.
- 16:45John Madden football, by the way, alumni of Cal Poly San Luis
- 16:50Obispo like myself and Ozzy Smith.
- 16:53So this is for the Sega, the Sega Genesis, Madden, Football,
- 16:58I've got Mario Kart, got to have a Mario Kart and the first Mario
- 17:03Kart was on Super Nintendo, got to have the 1st edition of Mario
- 17:07Kart. You know, I had an Atari growing
- 17:11up, so I, I have to have a Donkey Kong for Atari.
- 17:15One of the big games for Atari as a kid was Asteroids.
- 17:20Got to have myself an Asteroids. I still need a Pitfall.
- 17:23I don't have a Pitfall yet. I like collecting.
- 17:27These aren't just the boxes inside is the game, the
- 17:32instructions. So they call these video games
- 17:35complete Inbox CIB that I like to collect.
- 17:40These are just a few of them. I have a few that I'm actually
- 17:44watching closely right now on a couple of auctions that are
- 17:47ending soon. So I like collecting video
- 17:49games. I also like I started over the
- 17:54last, I don't know, six months collecting old VHS movies.
- 18:00Like, I mean, if if you were to list every movie of all time,
- 18:05what movie have I seen the most Coming to America?
- 18:10Coming to America, I've seen more than any movie of all time.
- 18:14The only movie that would be a close second would be National
- 18:18Lampoon, Christmas Vacation. That movie, my goodness, I've
- 18:22seen that. That might be as much as coming
- 18:25to America. You know, I got Tommy Boy, so I
- 18:30got the VH s s of these Tommy Boy, right?
- 18:33That's I mean, that's a classic Top Gun.
- 18:36Got to have some Top Gun. Didn't ever watch the new one.
- 18:39I don't know. You know, this is cool back in
- 18:42the day and then the scariest movie of all time in the history
- 18:47of movies. Now I know my buddy Mike Junk
- 18:50wax hero loves horror movies. Well, the scariest horror movie
- 18:57in the history of horror movies is ET.
- 19:03Nothing gave me nightmares. Nothing.
- 19:08No movie in the history of movies caused me more mental
- 19:13health issues than ET. So yeah, I I would collect
- 19:21stuff. I do collect stuff besides
- 19:22cards. I just don't talk about it that
- 19:24much. But yeah, I'm kind of a
- 19:27degenerate collector and very proud of it.
- 19:32This one says when buying online how do you go about comparing
- 19:36cards, color, quality? It's not mentioned much like
- 19:40centering, but it can really vary in vintage and matters a
- 19:43lot to me. It makes it even harder though
- 19:47when the newly graded PSA cards have a better image quality on
- 19:52the search site than the older ones and SGC search site
- 19:56pictures have. Different image quality.
- 19:59Plus you never know if an older graded card has gotten something
- 20:03like too much sun. The last thing I want is a card
- 20:07with faded colors and going to be a big card show isn't
- 20:11feasible to me. Thanks.
- 20:14Keep up the great work. All right, this is a really,
- 20:20really good question. A lot of us care about color and
- 20:24when you're not physically looking at a card you don't
- 20:28have, you don't know if you have all of the information.
- 20:33And so when you when you looking at a card online was, was the
- 20:38color enhanced? Did they add saturation to the
- 20:41color to make it look brighter and deeper colors?
- 20:44We don't really know because we aren't there and we don't know
- 20:47if anything was adjusted. And I don't really know if
- 20:52there's a perfect answer to this.
- 20:55I would say the following. First, I've mentioned many times
- 20:59and you talk about it a little bit here.
- 21:01Look at the cert, look on the cert, up the card, look the card
- 21:07up on PSA, look it up on SGC because for the most part
- 21:12there's a consistency to their scanning.
- 21:15Unfortunately, PS AS seems to be a little bit too bright at
- 21:20times. I think SGC actually, at least
- 21:24historically, did a little bit of a better job with the the
- 21:28scans. But what you can do by looking
- 21:30at those scans is it gives you a consistent picture instead of a
- 21:36potentially enhanced picture like the seller might be doing
- 21:41with the image that they list. If it's a auction house, auction
- 21:47houses have the card in hand. Ideally the auction house would
- 21:52be taking pretty high quality pictures and you can get a bit
- 21:56of a consistency by looking at the other auction house images
- 22:00that would be an option. None of those are going to be
- 22:04perfect though, because like you said, what if the image was
- 22:08taken five years ago of this card by PSAI?
- 22:12Look up the cert. It's a 5 year old image and
- 22:15since then it's been sitting on somebody's windowsill just
- 22:19eating sun and fading it away. That's the reason that pictures
- 22:25are so important on these listings and that's the reason
- 22:29why it's kind of sketch because the pictures could be
- 22:34manipulated. So I, I think my response to you
- 22:38would be is if you're uncomfortable and you don't
- 22:40trust the images, they're not high quality images and there's
- 22:44not a recent image on PSA or SGC and so on and so on and so on.
- 22:50I would say ask the seller if it's on eBay, for example, for
- 22:56additional pictures, e-mail the seller.
- 22:59You know, you can contact the seller through eBay and ask them
- 23:02specifically. Can I get more pictures of this
- 23:06because I'm not confident in the color.
- 23:09I'm the color is really important to me.
- 23:12And if it looks like the red or the blue and that's one, I'll
- 23:16say it right now. That's one of the things that I
- 23:18think PSA is better about because in PS as flip there is
- 23:23blue and red. You can get a better idea if the
- 23:28color saturation has been changed.
- 23:30If it's really, really deep red, a deeper red on the flip then
- 23:36you see on a normal PSA flip, then you know that that has been
- 23:41messed with. So the the blue and the red on
- 23:44the flip from the pictures helps us.
- 23:47That's one of the negatives of the SGC.
- 23:51Current SGC flip, the black and the white because we don't know
- 23:56the color. We don't have a basis for the
- 24:00color because it's just black and white.
- 24:02So if they add color saturation and make the colors more vibrant
- 24:06of the card, we can't tell that that was done because the flip
- 24:10is black and white. That is definitely a limitation.
- 24:13That was definitely, in my opinion, a little bit of an
- 24:16oversight on SG CS part. What would have been ideal is if
- 24:20there was like a color spectrum, like a little color spectrum on
- 24:24the flip. But that's not going to happen.
- 24:26So I would say ask for additional pictures from the
- 24:30seller. If it's an auction house, you
- 24:32can e-mail the auction house and you can ask them specifics about
- 24:37the card. Hey, I'm interested in lot #112.
- 24:41Can you tell me, is the color weak at all?
- 24:45Is the color stronger than normal?
- 24:47They, they should be able to give you additional information.
- 24:52It looks like there's a little wrinkle up there in the top
- 24:55right hand corner. Is that a wrinkle?
- 24:57They will get back to you with information about that specific
- 25:02lot number and and that could be helpful for you for sure if you
- 25:08still don't trust the seller. So say it's an eBay seller, it's
- 25:11a big card. You're talking about spending a
- 25:13lot of money and you ask for additional pictures, maybe ask
- 25:18for additional pictures with some additional item in the
- 25:23picture that will help you know if the color saturation changed,
- 25:29for example. Hey, could you do me a favor?
- 25:32Take another picture of the card and in the picture, will you put
- 25:36a penny in the picture for me? Because we know the color that a
- 25:41penny is supposed to be. Now, a penny is probably not a
- 25:44good a good choice because if they choose an old penny, it's
- 25:47dulled, which is different than a brighter penny, but something
- 25:51where we know the color of that item, like a wood pencil.
- 25:57Hey, when you take the picture, could you put another item in
- 26:00there like a wood pencil or an eraser or something where it
- 26:04would allow you to say, I know the color that that item is
- 26:08supposed to be. And if that color in that eraser
- 26:14is bordering on red because there's so much color
- 26:18saturation. I know they've messed with it
- 26:20and adjusted it. But when it really boils down to
- 26:23it, here's my advice. If you're not confident in the
- 26:27card and you don't have what you feel is enough information with
- 26:32the pictures that are presented, then don't buy it.
- 26:36Don't buy it. You don't marry the gal that you
- 26:41think is probably the right one. You marry the gal that you know
- 26:47is the right one. And when you're buying a card
- 26:50and you're outlaying a huge amount of money for a big card,
- 26:54you don't go well. I think that the color is good.
- 26:59I think that the corners are good enough for me.
- 27:04For me, I would rather be safe than sorry.
- 27:07So whether it's who you're dating, potentially thinking
- 27:11about proposing, or it's a card that you're thinking about
- 27:15putting $500 into, I make sure that I am certain that it's the
- 27:22right card. Now, will we all have a surprise
- 27:26or two in our life? Absolutely.
- 27:29But personally, I tend to go on the conservative route and I
- 27:34tend to be a little bit safer than sorry.
- 27:38And if I'm not certain that the color is legit, then I'm
- 27:43probably going to pass. This next one says I believe the
- 27:48evolution of grading will eventually make the card grades
- 27:52assigned today irrelevant. Think about how technology has
- 27:56continued to improve. I believe most companies are now
- 28:00measuring centering with AI tools, and if they aren't they
- 28:04should be. I think in the relatively near
- 28:07future a card, whether slabbed or raw can easily be scanned
- 28:12where centering edges and corners will be evaluated with
- 28:15more precise measure than they are used today.
- 28:19Other factors and how they are evaluated will also improve,
- 28:23like measuring registration, the quality of.
- 28:26Color in the card and possibly. Technology to assess if a card
- 28:30has been materially altered, soaked at a molecular level.
- 28:36I am sure soaking changes the cardboard in a way that could be
- 28:39detected if that is desired. If I am correct, this will make
- 28:44PSA 10s irrelevant. If you have 100 PSA 10s, PSA
- 28:50nines, or any other grading company assessments of the same
- 28:54card, the ability to differentiate their quality will
- 28:58exponentially improve. This will put a premium on the.
- 29:02Highest quality. Versions.
- 29:04As there will always be people with tons of money who want the
- 29:08best version. This will change the way
- 29:11everybody thinks about quality. You will.
- 29:14Be able to weigh what? Is important to you and look for
- 29:18the cards that meet your standards, not an arbitrary
- 29:22grading company. Just like going to Starbucks
- 29:26where no one generally gets the same drink the same way.
- 29:30Question. What do you think about my
- 29:33grading evolution theory? I agree.
- 29:38I mean, I agree, I think every passing day, the grade on the
- 29:45slab matters less than it did the previous day for a variety
- 29:51of reasons. One of which is, as you
- 29:54mentioned, the technology advancements allow the grading
- 29:58companies, whether it be PSA or STC or Beckett or blah blah,
- 30:01blah, blah, blah. Whoever comes out next, they're
- 30:04able to see things now that before they didn't see.
- 30:09And by increasing that technology, there is no question
- 30:14that the standards have gotten harder.
- 30:17And in addition to that, I think that it at this point is fairly
- 30:21universally accepted that over the last year or two,
- 30:24especially, something happened at PSA where the grading got
- 30:31tougher. And now those cards with a 9th
- 30:35serial number instead of eight are absolutely, I believe,
- 30:41looked at differently. Look at eBay listings.
- 30:44It'll say new cert, freshly graded.
- 30:47Why would they say that if that didn't influence the sale?
- 30:51Now, I've said this 1000 times. I will say it at least 1000
- 30:56more. That doesn't mean every card
- 31:00that was graded 10 years ago, the grade doesn't hold up.
- 31:04That's not what that means. What that means is it might hold
- 31:08up, but it might not. But a card that gets a nine from
- 31:13PSA. Now, I mean, let's just think
- 31:15about this for a second. You've got a Pete Rose rookie
- 31:19card and you submit it to PSA and it comes back a nine today.
- 31:25And the serial number is A9 digit serial number.
- 31:29It's a brand new slab, brand new, freshly graded card.
- 31:33I mean, that card's imagine how nice that card is going to be.
- 31:39Do you just imagine it being like borderline flawless right
- 31:46now? We've all seen cards that are
- 31:49nines and we've even seen some cards that are 10s that kind of
- 31:53look a little bit not flawless. But if you got a card back today
- 32:00from PSA, especially a vintage card, and it came back a nine,
- 32:05just you got to be you. You'd be able to, you know, cut
- 32:09stakes with those corners and edges, right?
- 32:13We all agree at this point they're grading so tough that
- 32:19it's different than it used to be.
- 32:23So let's Fast forward 10 years. Will it be tougher, 100%?
- 32:28Will there be more technologies, 100% Will there be more tools at
- 32:33our disposal? 100%.
- 32:36Will we look back on slabs that are being graded right now and
- 32:40look at those differently than the cards that are being graded
- 32:44Then? Absolutely.
- 32:46Let's face it, this whole concept of grading a card and
- 32:51encapsulating it is from the early 1990s.
- 32:57I think it would be naive to think that there's not going to
- 33:01be continued advancements. I mean, remember payphones?
- 33:08Remember those? When was the last time you saw a
- 33:12payphone? When did you last see a
- 33:15payphone? Why would anybody need a
- 33:19payphone? I legitimately never see those.
- 33:25Now, maybe California's different, maybe Sacramento is
- 33:27different, but I never see pay phones because everybody has a
- 33:33phone. So because of the technological
- 33:35advancements, the things of the past are extinct.
- 33:40I mean, you want to buy Avhs, this thing, not very expensive.
- 33:51In fact, this exact one, this one, I got an estate sale this
- 33:55weekend. I went up and I said how much do
- 33:58you want for the ETVHS? And they said you could just
- 34:02have it at one point. This was probably like a 12 or
- 34:07$15 item. What am I talking about?
- 34:11No clue. Here's what I'll say.
- 34:15I think that there will continue to be advancements and every
- 34:18time there's an advancement, it makes the thing of the past less
- 34:23valuable. Buggies, Model TS are not quite
- 34:31like the the the latest Porsche Cayenne that's come out right.
- 34:38Things have advanced, and they will continue to be advanced,
- 34:42and whenever they're advanced, the things from the past will be
- 34:46less and less appreciated and less and less desired.
- 34:52So yes, I 100% agree. Your thoughts on buying cards of
- 35:00all time greats? Because they might die soon.
- 35:05I understand the question and I hear what you're suggesting.
- 35:13Sandy Koufax, right an all time great doesn't do a lot of
- 35:19autograph signing anymore. Sandy Koufax isn't young.
- 35:25His rookie year was 1955 and he was very young then.
- 35:33But Sandy Koufax is, he's over 90 years old I think, right?
- 35:38Isn't he like 91 or something? So Sandy Kofax is likely won't
- 35:45be with us in, let's be, let's be +15 years, right?
- 35:52It's safe to say that he won't be with us in 15 years.
- 35:55So if he won't be with us in 15 years, that means he's going to
- 36:00not be with us. So sometime between now and 15
- 36:03years from now, unfortunately, we'll get some really difficult,
- 36:08unfortunate news that we've lost Sandy Kofax.
- 36:13Now, I'm assuming what you're saying is that if you buy cards
- 36:17of old players who are on the verge of dying, their cards will
- 36:21go up in value. And so shouldn't you go buy up
- 36:25all the cards of all the guys that are really old?
- 36:29I hear what you're saying. And I've talked about this topic
- 36:33before. I've done videos specifically on
- 36:36this topic. And I looked at Jim Brown.
- 36:38I was at a card show, literally at a card show, when the news
- 36:43broke that Jim Brown had passed away.
- 36:46And I remember walking up to a dealer and he said, did you hear
- 36:49about Jim Brown? I said, yeah.
- 36:51And he goes, yeah, I pulled all the cards.
- 36:54I said, what are you talking about?
- 36:56And he said, well, I mean, his cards are going to go up now.
- 37:00And, and so I, I don't want to have the cards out and sell them
- 37:03for the price that I had them out at.
- 37:06What happens when somebody passes away with their cards is
- 37:11there is a, a short term spike in them being talked about.
- 37:19There will be videos and ESPN clips and articles and people
- 37:24go, oh, man, I really liked. I really liked Jim Brown.
- 37:29I really liked Willie Mays. I really liked Orlando Cepeda.
- 37:32I really liked, you know, Bill Walton.
- 37:36I'm Jerry West. I'm just naming people who have
- 37:40passed away in the last two or three years.
- 37:42And so because of that influx, it reminds us of our admiration
- 37:47for some of these people. And then people will go buy
- 37:49their cards, but then those articles go away and those clips
- 37:56go away and things kind of go back to normal.
- 38:00I literally looked at charts of players right before they passed
- 38:07away, right when it came out that they passed away.
- 38:10And then a month later, Ricky Henderson was the latest Ricky
- 38:15Henderson cards. Like literally doubled in an
- 38:19hour. I was sitting in a habit
- 38:21hamburger place and the news broke and I looked and I was
- 38:26just watching these cards on eBay of Ricky Henderson just
- 38:29selling like hotcakes. And the price was just
- 38:32literally, it literally doubled. And now they're pretty close to
- 38:39what they were before. So #1 the spike in demand and
- 38:48the spike of reminding us of a retired athletes greatness is a
- 38:56temporary thing. Unfortunately, it's a temporary
- 38:59thing. And, and so it's not a, it's not
- 39:04a long term buy situation, but quite frankly, I buy cards of
- 39:09players that I like. That's the way I operate.
- 39:13I buy cards that I like the looks of, of players that I like
- 39:16to collect from, sets that I look I like and projects that
- 39:20I'm working on. I'm not looking at a card of
- 39:23trying to time something where I get it right before the spike so
- 39:28then I could sell it. That's just not me.
- 39:30Now, I know there's a lot of people that that's part of the
- 39:33fun is the speculation and trying to buy things low and
- 39:37then sell them high. I understand that and and that's
- 39:40fine. But I'm the wrong guy to ask
- 39:43about that because that's just not the way that I participate
- 39:48in the hobby. But I can tell you from looking
- 39:53over it from lots and lots of athletes.
- 39:56I did a video about the Ricky Henderson one.
- 39:58I did a video about Willie Mays. I did a video about Jim Brown.
- 40:03And in fact, with Willie Mays, his cards actually went down
- 40:09right after his death. And I think that's because the
- 40:12market got flooded with his cards.
- 40:14I think people knew he was. Getting up in age and bought his
- 40:20cards with this expectation and then what happened is as soon as
- 40:25he did pass away, they all put him up for sale at the same time
- 40:28and the supply went up faster than the demand and the prices
- 40:33actually dropped. What I would say is this,
- 40:38participate in the hobby by buying the cards that you like,
- 40:42of the players that you like, from the sets that you like in
- 40:46an era that you like, in the holders or not the holders that
- 40:50you like. Make sure that what you're
- 40:53buying are the things that you enjoy and bring you joy.
- 40:58And if you want to utilize the hobby as a way to speculate,
- 41:03hey, if that brings you joy, knock yourself out.
- 41:08I have no, no shade from me if that's what somebody else does.
- 41:13That's just not how I do it. So trying to give advice or
- 41:18suggestions about that. I'm probably the wrong guy, but
- 41:23I will tell you based on looking over that from several athletes
- 41:28over the last 3 1/2 years since I started my channel, the the
- 41:34price bump is very, very temporary.
- 41:39With that said, if you have a question for an upcoming
- 41:43episode, ask it down below in the comments.
- 41:45Remember, I don't think we're going to have AQ and a next
- 41:49week, but we're going to have a really special episode and I
- 41:55hope that you check it out. My mind is still blown and it
- 42:02was about 3 weeks ago that I got to see these cards.
- 42:05So next week, look for that. There will be an episode, but it
- 42:11won't be AQ and A for the first time in a really, really long
- 42:17time.
