- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, Seana. We have day one to fall camp. Today.
- 0:03Speaker 1: The coaches are walking around with white tape on their
- 0:06Speaker 1: foreheads with their name because we have a bunch of
- 0:09Speaker 1: new ones. But with Rob Aritz the defensive coordinator, he
- 0:13Speaker 1: brought with him some of his best players. How far
- 0:16Speaker 1: along do you think the defense is well?
- 0:19Speaker 2: I think the early spring in some ways did help.
- 0:21Speaker 2: They got going immediately. But then you have Owen Chambliss,
- 0:25Speaker 2: the leading tackler from San Diego State, and then Dwayne McDougal,
- 0:29Speaker 2: the best back end player in this in the secondary
- 0:32Speaker 2: at safety, so you've got two guys there, and then
- 0:36Speaker 2: you know the coaching staff. Roy Manning came with him
- 0:39Speaker 2: from San Diego State. Tyler Yelk has worked in this
- 0:43Speaker 2: system with Rob Orch before. There's you know, Dave Tollis
- 0:47Speaker 2: in Essen familiarity now in the D line. Corey Brown
- 0:50Speaker 2: on the D line has worked under Orch at some point.
- 0:53Speaker 2: So it's different when you look at this compared to
- 0:56Speaker 2: previous transitions we've seen in the RASK him Tony White
- 0:59Speaker 2: didn't bring really any coaches with them, didn't bring any
- 1:01Speaker 2: players with them for the most part. You know, obviously
- 1:04Speaker 2: John Butler did it. And I think with this one
- 1:06Speaker 2: it's been different because you have coaches and you even
- 1:09Speaker 2: have a few players, and in today's the era of
- 1:11Speaker 2: college football, when you hire a coach at a coordinator
- 1:14Speaker 2: role or head coach spot, ideally they bring talent with
- 1:17Speaker 2: them when they come to town.
- 1:18Speaker 1: In fact, I think that's kind of the first metric
- 1:20Speaker 1: if we hire you, who comes with you, and that
- 1:23Speaker 1: does have an impact on who gets hired. Now talk
- 1:26Speaker 1: about scheme change and there it just isn't a lot
- 1:30Speaker 1: of practice time organized practice time, but they are changing
- 1:34Speaker 1: the scheme. How big a deal is that going to
- 1:36Speaker 1: be to you?
- 1:37Speaker 2: Well, I think you know, a year ago, they operated
- 1:40Speaker 2: in a four man front more more often than not.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Actually they were obviously a base through three five, but
- 1:46Speaker 2: they used a lot of foreman front. I think this
- 1:48Speaker 2: is the differences they're fully committed to that they're going
- 1:51Speaker 2: to go more to a quarter's coverage on defense, which
- 1:54Speaker 2: they were not in before. So there's some coverage differences
- 1:58Speaker 2: too with some of the things they're bringing with this scheme.
- 2:01Speaker 2: But I do think it's going to fit the personnel better.
- 2:04Speaker 2: You know, guys like Williams when Airy I always felt
- 2:07Speaker 2: who were better in a four man front versus say
- 2:10Speaker 2: at three three five and you know, you go down
- 2:12Speaker 2: the line. I love the edges that they have on
- 2:14Speaker 2: this team. I think that's one of the deeper positions
- 2:16Speaker 2: with Cad Pedshock and Anthony Jones Williams when aery you
- 2:21Speaker 2: go down the line, Cam ln hard It's a pretty
- 2:24Speaker 2: veteran group, and I think this scheme will help hopefully
- 2:28Speaker 2: rush the passer better. That's been a real weak spot
- 2:31Speaker 2: last year, especially where they just could not get to
- 2:33Speaker 2: quarterbacks with their four man pass rush, and hopefully that's
- 2:37Speaker 2: going to change this year.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm glad you brought up Len Harder. At some point,
- 2:41Speaker 1: he has to start playing like he's capable. His freshman
- 2:45Speaker 1: year he made a real impact and then he had
- 2:47Speaker 1: a couple of injuries here and there. But this is
- 2:50Speaker 1: a guy that has to make strides toward big all
- 2:53Speaker 1: Big ten caliber defensive football player this year.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Well, he gets a bonus now, he gets another year
- 2:59Speaker 2: of eligibility. Well because he played as a true freshman,
- 3:02Speaker 2: Well he'll get a be here for twenty six and
- 3:05Speaker 2: potentially twenty seven now, which I think that's a real
- 3:09Speaker 2: benefit for a guy like him. Carter Nelson's another one
- 3:12Speaker 2: that will benefit with two more getting an extra year
- 3:14Speaker 2: of eligibility on the five for five, and you can
- 3:17Speaker 2: go down the line Anthony Calandria. But cam Linhart, Yeah,
- 3:21Speaker 2: you hope that this scheme fits him because he was
- 3:24Speaker 2: not really a good fit in the three three five either,
- 3:27Speaker 2: and I think he's a better fit in this. And
- 3:28Speaker 2: he's one of the leaders of this team. I think
- 3:31Speaker 2: when you start the handicap guys that could be a captain.
- 3:34Speaker 2: He's one of those types of players on this roster
- 3:37Speaker 2: that a lot of players look up to.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Had some big news come out of the Big Ten yesterday,
- 3:41Speaker 1: and this is good for Indiana. Their defensive lineman Stephen Daley,
- 3:44Speaker 1: who is Onnable mentioned all Big Ten, maybe a first
- 3:47Speaker 1: round draft choice candidate this coming year, has been cleared
- 3:51Speaker 1: to play. He's part of this return five for five scenario.
- 3:55Speaker 1: So there are a lot of other guys in the
- 3:58Speaker 1: Big ten that are going to benefit from this. This
- 4:00Speaker 1: is a guy who can wipe out a whole offensive
- 4:02Speaker 1: line in a single bound.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Yeah. It's really tricky with football though. I Mean a
- 4:06Speaker 2: lot of guys have moved on, they've signed in the
- 4:08Speaker 2: NFL teams and then they're not eligible to come back,
- 4:11Speaker 2: or you know that it's a rare deal where you
- 4:14Speaker 2: have a good player that's just sitting around that that
- 4:17Speaker 2: you know you could bring back in this situation, because
- 4:19Speaker 2: most football players in August or are at their next place,
- 4:23Speaker 2: because you couldn't really afford to wait on this thing
- 4:27Speaker 2: where basketball, to me is the one where you might
- 4:29Speaker 2: see a kickback of more talent because of this rule change,
- 4:35Speaker 2: or you know Nebraska is the big one they're waiting
- 4:36Speaker 2: on Marcus Lawrence. Say they have a spot on the
- 4:38Speaker 2: roster that's open, it's a matter of if doesn't make sense,
- 4:41Speaker 2: can they afford to bring him back? And that will
- 4:44Speaker 2: be the other part of this. You know, if there's
- 4:46Speaker 2: some good players available and they're able to come back
- 4:49Speaker 2: or joint a roster, there's a price with that too.
- 4:52Speaker 2: And at this time of year, you know, people's financial
- 4:55Speaker 2: situations are all over the map as far as how
- 4:57Speaker 2: much roster money they have left to spend.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Yeah, the issue, of course is whether they've signed a
- 5:02Speaker 1: pro contract. So you start thinking baseball players, have these
- 5:05Speaker 1: guys signed pro contracts? If the answer is yes, then
- 5:08Speaker 1: they're out. But if they haven't signed a pro contract,
- 5:10Speaker 1: they can come back. At least that's so far as
- 5:13Speaker 1: part of this Protect College Sports Act that may be
- 5:15Speaker 1: passed this week. All right, Schanad, thanks, of course, we
- 5:18Speaker 1: begin the Husker Buzz reports as Nebraska prepares for its
- 5:22Speaker 1: season opener against Ohio University in about a month
