- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14In our current series, Imagining Work, we're looking
- 0:17at a question.
- 0:18What story about work am I living in?
- 0:21Because the story we live in is the
- 0:23story we live out.
- 0:25And not every story about work squares with
- 0:27the story that God is telling on the
- 0:29pages of Scripture.
- 0:33Okay, so we've looked at a couple stories
- 0:34so far.
- 0:35We've got another one today, the lifestyle story
- 0:39about work.
- 0:41I want to start with a quote from
- 0:42a financial advisor.
- 0:43His name is Jeff Rose, and he's telling
- 0:45a story about Dylan and Allison Redling.
- 0:48Jeff says, Dylan and Allison Redling went from
- 0:51being young slackers to early middle-aged retirees
- 0:54in a space of less than 15 years.
- 0:57That's the kind of story I like to
- 0:59tell.
- 0:59It's what can happen when you start doing
- 1:01the right things with your money.
- 1:02Early retirement came in 2015.
- 1:05Allison was 44 and Dylan, 43.
- 1:08That comes from an article Jeff wrote for
- 1:10Forbes.
- 1:12Okay, so I don't know about you, but
- 1:13do you feel like a little twinge of
- 1:14envy when you think about maybe retiring at
- 1:1744 or at 43?
- 1:20This is really powerful, right?
- 1:22Jeff Rose knows what he's doing.
- 1:23He knows if he tells you a story,
- 1:25you can place yourself inside that story.
- 1:27Imagine if you were like Dylan and Allison
- 1:29Redling.
- 1:29Imagine what your life could be like if
- 1:31you could retire at 44 or 43 years
- 1:34old.
- 1:36And this is an expression of a really
- 1:37common attitude towards work, which is how can
- 1:40we get work over with?
- 1:42How can we get to retirement?
- 1:44And so that's why I call it the
- 1:45lifestyle narrative, because it's about how do we
- 1:48do something other than work?
- 1:51How do we have a lifestyle, whether that's
- 1:53through retirement or maybe by limiting the number
- 1:55of hours that we have during the work
- 1:57week, so that we can pursue other things
- 1:59besides work.
- 2:01And of course, there's nothing wrong with setting
- 2:03limits with work.
- 2:04That's actually a healthy thing to do, and
- 2:05God teaches that in the discipline of Sabbath
- 2:08and among other ways.
- 2:10But when we view work as a necessary
- 2:15evil, it can warp our relationship with work.
- 2:18And that's really what we do if we
- 2:20live inside of the lifestyle narrative about work.
- 2:24We view work as a necessary evil, which
- 2:26leads us to minimize work, to hold work
- 2:29at arm's length.
- 2:31And the problem with this is that it
- 2:33alienates us from our own experience of work.
- 2:36Just like our other narratives have cut us
- 2:38off from something, we look to have a
- 2:40TGIF narrative cuts us off from our experience
- 2:43of pain, and the do-what-you-love
- 2:45narrative cuts us off from our experience of
- 2:47contentment and the limitations of our circumstances.
- 2:51In the same way, the lifestyle narrative cuts
- 2:54us off from the work itself.
- 2:57It causes us to put our attention somewhere
- 2:59else besides work, so that we're not fully
- 3:01engaged, not fully living inside of the work
- 3:04that we're doing.
- 3:06And that's actually bad news because we do
- 3:08have work.
- 3:09Work is part of our life.
- 3:11And so we need a vision of work
- 3:13that helps us engage the work, not hold
- 3:16it at arm's length.
- 3:18And thankfully, that's what Jesus leads us into.
- 3:21Jesus invites us into a way of doing
- 3:23work where we're fully engaged, fully present in
- 3:26the work that we're doing.
- 3:28We can see this on the pages of
- 3:30Colossians chapter 3.
- 3:32So I'm going to read it's a little
- 3:33bit of a longer passage today, but we're
- 3:35going to unpack it.
- 3:36I think it's going to be really helpful.
- 3:37So Colossians 3 22 through 4 verse 1.
- 3:41Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything and
- 3:44do it not only when their eye is
- 3:46on you and to curry their favor, but
- 3:48with sincerity of heart and reverence for the
- 3:50Lord.
- 3:51Whatever you do, work at it with all
- 3:52your heart as working for the Lord, not
- 3:55for human masters, since you know that you
- 3:57will receive an inheritance from the Lord as
- 3:59a reward.
- 4:00It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
- 4:03Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for
- 4:05their wrongs, and there is no favoritism.
- 4:08Masters, provide your slaves with what is right
- 4:10and fair because you know that you also
- 4:13have a master in heaven.
- 4:15Okay, so what is Paul doing in this
- 4:17passage?
- 4:18First of all, because this passage is addressed
- 4:20to slaves, enslaved believers in the first century,
- 4:24got to do a little bit of cultural
- 4:25context.
- 4:26When we hear the word slavery, we tend
- 4:28to think of race based chattel slavery from
- 4:30the history of the United States and the
- 4:32rest of the Americas and all the evil
- 4:34that came from that and the continuing legacy
- 4:35of it today and various forms of racial
- 4:38injustice.
- 4:40First century slavery was different, but it certainly
- 4:43wasn't a cakewalk.
- 4:43So first century slavery was not race-based,
- 4:47slaves could often buy their freedom depending on
- 4:49their situation, some slaves had an education and
- 4:52could even occupy positions of social influence, but
- 4:56slaves were still considered their master's property and
- 4:59they had no legal rights to protect them
- 5:01from abuse.
- 5:02Slaves often got a raw deal, very limited
- 5:06circumstances, no freedom to choose or to determine
- 5:10their own way much of the time.
- 5:12So these slaves that Paul is addressing are
- 5:15Christian believers, disciples of Jesus Christ and they're
- 5:18part of the Christian community at Colossae.
- 5:21And so when we think about how Paul
- 5:23is going to address them, we might expect
- 5:25him to say something about how their situation
- 5:27is unjust and God is on their side
- 5:29against the oppressor.
- 5:31And of course, there are many passages of
- 5:32Scripture that use that kind of language, but
- 5:35Paul has a pastoral concern here.
- 5:37These Christians are enslaved, they're in their circumstances
- 5:41and not all of them are necessarily going
- 5:43to be free anytime soon.
- 5:45And so Paul's trying to help them figure
- 5:47out, how do I live out my life
- 5:49with Jesus in the circumstances I'm in right
- 5:52now?
- 5:53And this is a really great example for
- 5:55us because we too might be tempted to
- 5:58think about, oh, if only my circumstances were
- 6:00different.
- 6:00We talked about that with the do what
- 6:03you love narrative.
- 6:04But as Dallas Willard says, God has yet
- 6:07to bless anyone except where they are.
- 6:10And so we have to start where we
- 6:11are and then ask, okay, what does it
- 6:14mean for me to be here?
- 6:15And Paul's doing that with these enslaved believers,
- 6:19and he tells them not to just obey
- 6:21their masters when their eye is on them
- 6:23to create their favor, but with sincerity of
- 6:26heart and reverence for the Lord.
- 6:28So Paul seems to be addressing something like
- 6:30the lifestyle narrative for these slaves, not that
- 6:33their lifestyle was so cushy, but that they
- 6:35too are trying to hold their work at
- 6:37arm's length.
- 6:37They may be trying to do just enough
- 6:39work to curry their master's favor rather than
- 6:42working hard from the heart.
- 6:45They're just trying to look like they're working
- 6:47hard.
- 6:48Have you ever been tempted that way?
- 6:49I've definitely been tempted that way.
- 6:50Like I'm going to work hard enough for
- 6:51my boss to think I'm working hard, not
- 6:54necessarily just giving it a wholehearted effort in
- 6:57the moment, you know, regardless of whether it's
- 6:59visible or not.
- 7:01And so Paul is addressing that temptation to
- 7:02hold work at arm's length, to not be
- 7:04fully engaged, to do only just enough.
- 7:08And he says, instead, work with sincerity of
- 7:12heart and reverence for the Lord.
- 7:15Now that word sincerity of heart, it makes
- 7:18us think, okay, so it's not being like
- 7:20insincere, not like doing one thing, but trying
- 7:23to make it look another way.
- 7:25But it also could be translated simplicity of
- 7:27heart or singleness of heart.
- 7:30The RSV and the KJV, older translations, use
- 7:33that word singleness, singleness of heart.
- 7:36And that actually shows us the crux of
- 7:39this passage, which is that Paul's solution to
- 7:43our temptation to hold work at arm's length
- 7:45is not just about how hard we're working.
- 7:48It's about who we're working for.
- 7:52He says, do your work as working for
- 7:54the Lord.
- 7:56It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
- 7:59And Paul says this, this changes the way
- 8:01you do your work.
- 8:02You can do your work with singleness of
- 8:05heart.
- 8:05This word, if it was used to describe
- 8:07a cloth, it would be a cloth that
- 8:08wasn't folded at all.
- 8:10There was only one section, there's singleness of
- 8:13cloth.
- 8:14And so similarly with our hearts, if we
- 8:15have singleness of heart, that means our hearts
- 8:18are integrated.
- 8:18They're not divided into different sections.
- 8:21And Paul's saying that the focus is Jesus.
- 8:25If we do our work for Jesus, he's
- 8:27the one that can bring that sense of
- 8:29undividedness to our life, a sense of integration,
- 8:33where we don't have to have compartments or
- 8:35sections of our life that are in tension
- 8:37with each other.
- 8:38Instead, there's simplicity.
- 8:41Because Jesus is our focus, everything comes into
- 8:44alignment around him.
- 8:46He can be the integrating center of our
- 8:48whole life, including our life at work.
- 8:52And so that means that we are free
- 8:54to do our work with all our heart
- 8:57as working for the Lord.
- 8:58Because we have a simple heart, a heart
- 9:00that's focused on Jesus, whatever we're doing, we're
- 9:03doing it for him.
- 9:04We're doing it with him.
- 9:06We're putting him at the center.
- 9:08And that's really good news, because that means
- 9:10that instead of things being alienated or divided,
- 9:16they're united.
- 9:17And this actually addresses the other stories we've
- 9:19looked at too.
- 9:20Instead of holding our pain at arm's length,
- 9:23like in the TGIF narrative, or instead of
- 9:25holding our limitations at arm's length, like in
- 9:29the do what you love narrative, and instead
- 9:31of holding our work itself, at arm's length,
- 9:33like in the lifestyle narrative, we can actually
- 9:35reconcile with all of these things if Jesus
- 9:38is at the center.
- 9:39We can be present to our pain with
- 9:41Jesus.
- 9:42We can be present to our limitations, trusting
- 9:43that Jesus is at work in us.
- 9:45We can be present to our work itself,
- 9:48because we're working for Jesus and with Jesus.
- 9:53So that's the good news.
- 9:55Jesus can be the integrating center of our
- 9:58lives at work.
- 9:59But how do we put that into practice?
- 10:02Well, one really simple suggestion is to memorize
- 10:06some of this passage.
- 10:08I just take the section of verse 23.
- 10:10Whatever you do, work at it with all
- 10:12your heart as working for the Lord.
- 10:14You can just memorize that.
- 10:15Whatever you do, work at it with all
- 10:16your heart as working for the Lord.
- 10:18Or later on, just the phrase, it is
- 10:20the Lord Christ you are serving.
- 10:22And then when you get to that moment
- 10:23at work, when you're tempted to hold your
- 10:25work at arm's length, just say the verse
- 10:27that you memorized.
- 10:28It is the Lord Christ I am serving.
- 10:30And that's enough.
- 10:31That's often enough to be like, okay, I
- 10:33can be present.
- 10:33I can fully engage.
- 10:34I can, I can give the oomph that
- 10:36this challenge takes, because it is the Lord
- 10:39Christ I am serving.
- 10:42There's one other thing that's really important in
- 10:44this verse that I want to look at,
- 10:45and that's this phrase, you will receive an
- 10:48inheritance from the Lord as a reward.
- 10:51We can think about compensation at work, like
- 10:53am I getting paid enough to do this
- 10:55job?
- 10:55And that's a legitimate question.
- 10:57But this passage was addressed to people who
- 10:59weren't getting paid anything.
- 11:01And it says they can instead set their
- 11:04hearts on the Lord, that they will receive
- 11:06an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.
- 11:10That's true for us too.
- 11:11If we do our work with Jesus at
- 11:13the center of our lives, we can trust
- 11:15the ultimate compensation we're going to receive is
- 11:18not our paycheck or our benefits or our
- 11:20perks or our prestige or our social status.
- 11:24No, the ultimate compensation we're going to receive
- 11:26is the inheritance we receive in the Lord.
- 11:30And of course, at the end of the
- 11:31day, the inheritance we receive from the Lord
- 11:33is the Lord.
- 11:35It's our union with Christ Himself, that which
- 11:37brings the deepest joy, the deepest fulfillment far
- 11:40beyond any other kind of reward.
- 11:42And we can begin to experience that right
- 11:44now as we do our work for Him.
- 11:50Lord Jesus, help us to set our eyes
- 11:52on you and let you be the integrating
- 11:54center of our lives.
- 11:56Help us to do our work as working
- 11:58for you and trust that we will receive
- 12:01an inheritance from you as a reward.
- 12:04As you work in us, let us do
- 12:06our work with you.
- 12:12Thanks for listening.
