Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: What Are You Choosing Because It's Comfortable?
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Emily a body coming in hot that felt unnatural here
- 0:25Speaker 1: I am. I'm here to grace your feeds with the
- 0:28Speaker 1: little rambling thoughts and wisdom for you to take into
- 0:32Speaker 1: your weekend. I today recorded my sixth hurdle episode of
- 0:37Speaker 1: the week. It has been an insane week. I am
- 0:41Speaker 1: working to kind of get my ducks in a row
- 0:44Speaker 1: before heading out of town next week, and so that
- 0:48Speaker 1: meant getting a leg up on all the work that
- 0:51Speaker 1: I had on deck, also having the opportunity to interview
- 0:56Speaker 1: some really awesome people. So one of the people that
- 0:58Speaker 1: I sat down with you're going to be hearing from
- 1:00Speaker 1: her on Monday. Her name is Brooke Wells. If you
- 1:03Speaker 1: don't know Brooke, she is a crossfitter. She came in
- 1:07Speaker 1: fifth at the CrossFit Games last week. I've been wanting
- 1:11Speaker 1: to chat with Brooke forever and was so excited that
- 1:14Speaker 1: we were finally able to make this happen. And something
- 1:17Speaker 1: that I really took away and was really just enamored
- 1:21Speaker 1: by from our conversation was the fact that for the
- 1:24Speaker 1: first six years of Brooke competing professionally CrossFit being her profession,
- 1:31Speaker 1: she did it alone, and that she trained alone, she
- 1:36Speaker 1: worked remotely with a coach, but she found that next
- 1:40Speaker 1: level of intrinsic motivation to get up every day and
- 1:45Speaker 1: not just do hard things. I mean hard sometimes for
- 1:48Speaker 1: me is like walking to the mailbox downstairs. Brooke was
- 1:54Speaker 1: out there like slamming prs, lifting heavy bar bills overhead,
- 1:59Speaker 1: putting in the work with so much grit and so
- 2:02Speaker 1: much determination, and showing up to train completely on her own.
- 2:08Speaker 1: And it made me think, right, it made me think
- 2:10Speaker 1: about how many times we choose to do things on
- 2:14Speaker 1: our own because we don't know, perhaps any better, or
- 2:17Speaker 1: perhaps we're scared of change. For the first gosh handful
- 2:22Speaker 1: of years, maybe six to eight years of running, I
- 2:25Speaker 1: was scared, very much, so scared to run with other people.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I was scared that I wasn't good enough, that I
- 2:32Speaker 1: wouldn't be fast enough, that I would slow them down,
- 2:34Speaker 1: that I was going to be an inconvenience. It's like
- 2:36Speaker 1: name the worry, and I definitely had it. And so
- 2:40Speaker 1: instead of opening myself up to community, I did it
- 2:43Speaker 1: on my own. And as I'm sure Brooke can attest to,
- 2:48Speaker 1: it definitely had its challenges. The good thing is when
- 2:52Speaker 1: you have a goal and you know why that goal
- 2:54Speaker 1: is important to you. Then that makes doing things on
- 2:57Speaker 1: your own feel a little more like part of your purpose.
- 3:00Speaker 1: But that doesn't necessarily mean that each and every day
- 3:04Speaker 1: is going to feel effortless. And I'm sure that there
- 3:07Speaker 1: were so many times on that journey for her where
- 3:10Speaker 1: it could have been really easy to walk away without
- 3:14Speaker 1: consistent accountability and support. Not to say, of course, that
- 3:18Speaker 1: she didn't have those things within her coach from a
- 3:20Speaker 1: distance and her local friends and family. But still it's challenging,
- 3:25Speaker 1: and it's a lesson that I myself have learned over
- 3:28Speaker 1: the last few years as I've opened myself up more
- 3:30Speaker 1: to running with others and scrapping those stories that I
- 3:34Speaker 1: was telling myself, knowing that as long as you have
- 3:37Speaker 1: a body, you are a runner, and there is a
- 3:39Speaker 1: community out there that is going to accept me anyway.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Like I said, I'm so impressed with Brooke now. She
- 3:45Speaker 1: is the fifth fittest on earth according to CrossFit, and
- 3:50Speaker 1: she got there because she was willing to put in
- 3:54Speaker 1: that work and was able to define why this was
- 3:59Speaker 1: important to her or why she.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Wanted to keep showing up day in and day out.
- 4:05Speaker 1: And so this week, I want to encourage you to
- 4:07Speaker 1: think about the things that are important to you in
- 4:09Speaker 1: your life, and maybe on the goals front, take some
- 4:13Speaker 1: time to write down the why. So think about what
- 4:17Speaker 1: some of your goals are, what some of your aspirations
- 4:21Speaker 1: may be, and take some time to write down the why.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Because when the going gets tough, regardless of whether you're
- 4:29Speaker 1: going at it alone or lucky enough to go at
- 4:32Speaker 1: it with the company of friends or peers, going back
- 4:36Speaker 1: to that why is always going to bring you motivation
- 4:41Speaker 1: to keep on, keeping on and show up when the
- 4:44Speaker 1: going gets tough.
- 4:46Speaker 2: And now a listener question.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Good morning, Emily, This is Monica from Houston. I want
- 4:53Speaker 3: to ask you, if you, for some reason, somebody tells
- 4:57Speaker 3: you that you only have twenty four hours, what will
- 5:01Speaker 3: you do in those twenty four hours? Like, give us
- 5:04Speaker 3: a hand of like most of the day, work out
- 5:08Speaker 3: what FRADI A You're going to go eat? What else
- 5:11Speaker 3: you're going to do? You have to travel just twenty
- 5:14Speaker 3: four hours that you have left? What are you going
- 5:17Speaker 3: or planning?
- 5:17Speaker 2: You know?
- 5:18Speaker 1: I feel as though a variation of this question has
- 5:20Speaker 1: come in before, and I love like in my soul,
- 5:24Speaker 1: I love that when I think about answering it, it
- 5:27Speaker 1: really does just riff on what a quote unquote normal
- 5:31Speaker 1: day is for me, and that I don't immediately think
- 5:34Speaker 1: that I want to be in Italy, although that would
- 5:37Speaker 1: be nice. I think about the things that would bring
- 5:41Speaker 1: me so much contentment in my everyday life to have
- 5:45Speaker 1: the perfect day. I feel so blessed that I get
- 5:49Speaker 1: to do what I love by talking to people on
- 5:52Speaker 1: a regular basis and helping others and living in this
- 5:56Speaker 1: place in Brooklyn that I love.
- 5:58Speaker 2: And so when I think of that idyllic day.
- 6:02Speaker 1: It would start in the morning with me waking up
- 6:05Speaker 1: next to my partner, who I am in a happily
- 6:09Speaker 1: committed and great relationship with the someone who I feel
- 6:13Speaker 1: comfortable with to be my entire self and supports me
- 6:17Speaker 1: just like I'm excited to support them. I would then
- 6:20Speaker 1: go out for a run, probably on my own because
- 6:24Speaker 1: that's where I do some of my best thinking, and
- 6:26Speaker 1: maybe along that run I would run into two or
- 6:30Speaker 1: three friends and we would finish the run together and
- 6:33Speaker 1: of course eat a croissant. Then I would grab a
- 6:37Speaker 1: niced coffee and come home and get ready for my day.
- 6:40Speaker 1: And on my ideal day, COVID is a non thing
- 6:44Speaker 1: and I have about two different sessions in the studio
- 6:49Speaker 1: with some of my dream guests. Let's say Ashley Graham,
- 6:54Speaker 1: who I cannot believe I'm saying this, but I'm going
- 6:56Speaker 1: to have the good opportunity fortune literally the this is
- 7:00Speaker 1: something I've manifested forever to speak with on stage next
- 7:04Speaker 1: month at the Bold Conference in Los Angeles. I'll put
- 7:06Speaker 1: the link to that in the show notes in case
- 7:09Speaker 1: you want to come out and support. So, let's say
- 7:12Speaker 1: Ashley Graham and Venus Williams. I really really want to
- 7:17Speaker 1: sit down with Venus Williams, and so we do that
- 7:21Speaker 1: in my studio, and I then am able to outsource
- 7:26Speaker 1: some of the work that doesn't excite me as much,
- 7:29Speaker 1: including editing those episodes. I have a delightful lunch down
- 7:35Speaker 1: around the corner at one of my favorite small Italian restaurants,
- 7:39Speaker 1: perhaps a summer squash salad. When I'm done there, I
- 7:43Speaker 1: have a massage and a session at an infrared sauna.
- 7:47Speaker 2: I bob holme, I shower, I meet.
- 7:50Speaker 1: My partner because he lives with me, and we grab
- 7:55Speaker 1: a happy hour drink. My drink would either probably be
- 7:58Speaker 1: a martini with extra olives, dirty vodka or an old
- 8:02Speaker 1: fashioned or maybe just bourbon on the rocks.
- 8:05Speaker 2: I'm really big on four roses with an orange peel.
- 8:09Speaker 1: And then he goes to meet up with some friends,
- 8:12Speaker 1: and I go to meet up with some girlfriends and
- 8:16Speaker 1: we have a really, really great dinner at one of
- 8:18Speaker 1: my favorite restaurants, Barbree Me on the Bowery in Manhattan.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I don't even have to order an uber to come
- 8:27Speaker 1: back home when we are full of bucatini and red wine,
- 8:31Speaker 1: because I have a car service in my dream day,
- 8:34Speaker 1: and the car brings me home and maybe we enjoy
- 8:40Speaker 1: a glass of wine or at this point it might
- 8:43Speaker 1: be time to switch to Seltzer on the roof and
- 8:46Speaker 1: wind down at the end of a really great day.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And that's it. It's not super different than what I'm
- 8:54Speaker 2: already doing.
- 8:55Speaker 1: It definitely has some aspirational highlights, but there things that
- 9:00Speaker 1: I'm working toward, and mark my words, it's happening, all right.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Make sure you're booing along with Hurdle over on social
- 9:07Speaker 1: It's at Hurdle Podcast. I'm over at Emily Body. I
- 9:09Speaker 1: would love, love love to hear about your ideal day.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Feel free to talk to me about it over on Instagram.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Tag the show at tag me, and as always, if
- 9:18Speaker 1: you have a listener question, I'm all eres a link to.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Send me one is in the show notes.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I'm not sure if my day was a little too boring,
- 9:27Speaker 1: but it makes me happy, all right. All right, that's it.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Happy Friday, y'all. Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
