Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: A killer starring Dan Overlay. A tale well calculated to
- 0:09Speaker 1: keep you in suspense. All right, mister, this is as
- 0:30Speaker 1: far as you go.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Why?
- 0:31Speaker 1: What's the matter, officer? What's wrong? You'll have to park
- 0:34Speaker 1: here for a while. The street's closed. But I live
- 0:36Speaker 1: on this street. I've got to get home. My wife's
- 0:39Speaker 1: waiting for me. She just had a baby. You'll be
- 0:41Speaker 1: a little late. Now, just a minute. Look, will you
- 0:43Speaker 1: keep your voice down?
- 0:45Speaker 3: Oh.
- 0:46Speaker 1: What is this, a stakeout? Yeah. Who are you after?
- 0:49Speaker 1: Roy Jaliska. Jaliska? That guy who's wanted for murder? That's right.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Where's he hiding?
- 0:56Speaker 4: Down the street, three doors. There's a cop every ten
- 1:00Speaker 4: feet from here.
- 1:00Speaker 1: To the river. You'd better go into the drugstore and wait.
- 1:03Speaker 1: You can call your wife if you want. I think
- 1:06Speaker 1: I'd better.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Where'd you say he was? That boarding house across the street,
- 1:10Speaker 3: down three doors. We live in the apartment house right
- 1:12Speaker 3: next to it. You don't think there'd be any shooting?
- 1:17Speaker 1: Just tell your wife to stay inside and keep her
- 1:19Speaker 1: door locked. She'll be all right. Thanks. Honey? She's got
- 1:35Speaker 1: to be home. Hello? What's the matter, honey? I thought
- 1:44Speaker 1: you weren't going to answer. I, um.
- 1:49Speaker 2: I was looking after Johnny.
- 1:51Speaker 1: He okay?
- 1:51Speaker 2: Yes. Just getting hungry.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Well, go ahead and feed him. I'm going to be late.
- 1:59Speaker 3: I don't want to scare you, Jess. There's going to
- 2:01Speaker 3: be a little trouble next door. I don't want you
- 2:04Speaker 3: to leave the apartment. The police are after someone who's
- 2:08Speaker 3: been hiding out in the boarding house next to us.
- 2:11Speaker 3: A whole block is surrounded and I won't be able
- 2:12Speaker 3: to get home till it's over. And remember, you're not
- 2:16Speaker 3: to come out.
- 2:16Speaker 1: All right. There's nothing to be afraid of, Jesse. Just
- 2:23Speaker 1: stay inside and keep the door locked. There's no need
- 2:27Speaker 1: for that now. Goodbye, dear. What? Jesse? Hello? Hello?
- 2:33Speaker 4: Jesse?
- 2:41Speaker 3: I tell you, Sergeant, I'm positive there's something wrong up
- 2:44Speaker 3: there in my apartment. What makes you so sure? Well,
- 2:46Speaker 3: my wife was afraid of something.
- 2:48Speaker 1: I know she was.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Something right there in the room with her. I didn't
- 2:52Speaker 3: realize how different she sounded until.
- 2:53Speaker 1: I hung up.
- 2:55Speaker 3: You say you live next door to the boarding house? Yes,
- 2:57Speaker 3: the apartment house next door on the third floor. I'm
- 3:00Speaker 3: sure he's in there with her. He could be anywhere now.
- 3:04Speaker 3: We've hit the boarding house and he wasn't in his room.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I knew it.
- 3:07Speaker 1: He went across the roof. He's with Jesse and my son.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Now, don't go jumping at any conclusions. Our apartment is
- 3:13Speaker 3: on the top floor. He could get in easy enough.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Let me go up there, Sergeant. Please let me go
- 3:18Speaker 3: up there. I've got to be with my wife and baby.
- 3:21Speaker 3: What good would that do? We're not even sure he's there.
- 3:24Speaker 1: I'll make sure.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Look.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Look, if everything's all right, if he isn't there, I'll
- 3:29Speaker 3: call the drugstore and have them tell you so. If
- 3:31Speaker 3: he is, I'll... Well, I'll let you know somehow. We
- 3:34Speaker 3: can think of some kind of signal.
- 3:39Speaker 1: All right. Now listen to me. Yes. Go straight to
- 3:42Speaker 1: your wife.
- 3:43Speaker 4: If you pass anyone you don't know on the stairs
- 3:45Speaker 4: or in the halls, keep going and don't look back.
- 3:48Speaker 4: He's trapped and he's scared now, and he'll kill you
- 3:51Speaker 4: if he thinks you're onto him. I realize that. If
- 3:54Speaker 4: he's not in your place when you get there... Call
- 3:57Speaker 4: the drugstore. If he is there, well, there's nothing I
- 4:02Speaker 4: can tell you. You'll be on your own.
- 4:04Speaker 1: But don't try to signal. You wouldn't get away with it,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and it's not necessary.
- 4:08Speaker 4: If I don't get your call ten minutes after you
- 4:11Speaker 4: go in, we'll know.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Remember this, mister. If he's there, don't try to be
- 4:17Speaker 4: a hero. Just do whatever he tells you. Keep a
- 4:20Speaker 4: good distance from him, and don't make any quick moves.
- 4:24Speaker 4: He's been in spots like this before. He'll know what
- 4:26Speaker 4: it means. I know. That's about all, I guess. Just
- 4:31Speaker 4: be careful. We want this man. We want him bad.
- 4:35Speaker 4: But we don't want anyone hurt getting him. We can
- 4:37Speaker 4: help it.
- 4:38Speaker 2: You understand?
- 4:38Speaker 1: I understand. And thanks. Okay, mister. You can get going. Jesse! Jesse,
- 5:05Speaker 1: it's me!
- 5:08Speaker 3: Jess!
- 5:12Speaker 1: Honey, is everything okay?
- 5:15Speaker 2: Come in, Henry.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Get your hands over your head, get up against the wall,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and don't make any noise or I'll kill you.
- 5:50Speaker 2: In you.
- 5:51Speaker 4: You won't never know what it means to wish you
- 5:53Speaker 4: could die until you get a. 45 slug in the stomach.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Don't worry, Jesse. I know he means it. I mean it.
- 5:59Speaker 1: It won't do any good, you know.
- 6:01Speaker 3: No matter what happens to us, no matter how long
- 6:03Speaker 3: you stay here, they'll get you.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Listen there, guys.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Just like me, those blue suits don't make them Superman.
- 6:11Speaker 4: They make mistakes like everyone else. They already made a
- 6:14Speaker 4: big one.
- 6:15Speaker 3: What? They shouldn't have sent you. Nobody sent me. My
- 6:22Speaker 3: wife didn't sound right when I spoke to her over
- 6:24Speaker 3: the phone. I came up to find out why. Yeah,
- 6:26Speaker 3: she gave it away. She's sorry about that.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Jesse, did he.
- 6:30Speaker 2: It's all right, Henry. Please, it's all right.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Did he hurt you, Jesse? Never mind that.
- 6:35Speaker 3: She just got out of the hospital. Would you like
- 6:37Speaker 3: this so you go back? I hope they kill you.
- 6:42Speaker 1: I might.
- 6:43Speaker 4: I thought about it. I guess maybe you better start
- 6:46Speaker 4: thinking about it, too. It'll happen next time you make
- 6:49Speaker 4: a crack like that.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Henry, don't. Don't.
- 6:52Speaker 4: I'm going to ask you a couple of questions. And
- 6:55Speaker 4: you're going to give me the right answers. The right answers, mister.
- 6:58Speaker 4: The first time or you'll get hurt bad.
- 7:01Speaker 1: What do you want to know? Where were you when
- 7:03Speaker 1: you made that phone call? Drugstore. At the corner.
- 7:07Speaker 4: And your wife don't sound right. You think maybe something's wrong.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Yes.
- 7:11Speaker 1: You want to get up there. You want to find
- 7:13Speaker 1: out why.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Yes.
- 7:18Speaker 4: We don't hear you coming up the stairs until almost
- 7:20Speaker 4: ten minutes after she hangs up.
- 7:22Speaker 3: What are you doing all that time? Well, you see,
- 7:27Speaker 3: at first I wasn't sure she sounded like there was
- 7:31Speaker 3: something wrong. It was only after I hung up and
- 7:34Speaker 3: got to thinking about it that I started to worry.
- 7:37Speaker 1: And then I made up my mind to come up.
- 7:39Speaker 1: You don't stop to talk it over with the cops?
- 7:42Speaker 1: Why should I? How could I know it was you
- 7:45Speaker 1: in here?
- 7:46Speaker 4: Cops all over the block looking for me, searching every building.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Streets probably closed off, and your wife sounds scared over
- 7:53Speaker 4: the phone. She don't say why. Sounds like someone's with her,
- 7:56Speaker 4: and she don't say who. And you don't think it
- 7:59Speaker 4: might be me?
- 8:00Speaker 1: Well, yes. Maybe. You don't say nothing to the cops, though?
- 8:05Speaker 3: No.
- 8:06Speaker 1: You just come up all by yourself?
- 8:07Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:08Speaker 1: You sure of that? Yes.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Okay.
- 8:11Speaker 3: No.
- 8:12Speaker 2: No. Henry, Henry. Henry.
- 8:21Speaker 1: It's all right. I'm all right, Jesse. What do you
- 8:26Speaker 1: think I am?
- 8:27Speaker 4: There's a line of cops five feet thick around every
- 8:30Speaker 4: building in the block, and no one gets through unless
- 8:32Speaker 4: they let them. You're here because they put you here.
- 8:37Speaker 4: I'm giving you just five seconds to tell me why.
- 8:41Speaker 4: What's the big plan?
- 8:42Speaker 2: He's hurt, can't you see?
- 8:44Speaker 4: You've hurt him.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I don't know about that plan. I don't know what
- 8:50Speaker 1: they're going to do. But I know you're in here.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Go on.
- 8:55Speaker 3: I did go to the police when I thought you
- 8:57Speaker 3: were here with my wife. I don't think they believed
- 9:01Speaker 3: me at first. But I talked them into letting me
- 9:04Speaker 3: come anyway. If you weren't here, I was supposed to call.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Them right away. And if I was? Nothing. Just wait.
- 9:14Speaker 1: And if they didn't hear in ten minutes, it meant....
- 9:19Speaker 3: It meant I couldn't call. That you were... That you
- 9:22Speaker 3: were in this room.
- 9:23Speaker 1: What time is it? Too late. Much too late. They
- 9:29Speaker 1: know Jaleska. They've stopped searching. They know you're here. You
- 9:33Speaker 1: haven't got a chance. I got a chance. As long
- 9:39Speaker 1: as I ain't alone, I got a chance.
- 9:44Speaker 4: You, lady.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Go get that kid.
- 9:49Speaker 2: No.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Why do you want him? We'll do anything you say.
- 9:53Speaker 1: You look okay. You don't want to hurt the kid.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Nothing will happen. if you do like I tell you.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Get him, lady. All right, Jesse.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Henry.
- 10:07Speaker 1: It's all right. I'm sure of it. You haven't got
- 10:11Speaker 1: much time, Juleska. You know it.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Killing our baby is something you wouldn't do.
- 10:19Speaker 1: You can bring him in, Jessie.
- 10:22Speaker 2: If you say so.
- 10:27Speaker 4: You're so sure this is the end of the line
- 10:30Speaker 4: for me. Those cops down there, they're so sure. Well,
- 10:35Speaker 4: I'm telling you, I got lots of time. And you're
- 10:38Speaker 4: going to help me take it.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Yeah? That's right. Now back up to the wall and
- 10:45Speaker 1: peel off that jacket. What? You heard me. Take off
- 10:48Speaker 1: the jacket. Throw it on the floor. Sure. All right.
- 10:57Speaker 1: What are you going to do? I'm not going to
- 11:00Speaker 1: do anything. You're going to take it for a while.
- 11:03Speaker 1: What do you mean? You don't get it. I'm kind
- 11:08Speaker 1: of surprised.
- 11:09Speaker 3: I don't see any way out for you, if that's
- 11:11Speaker 3: what you mean.
- 11:12Speaker 1: They know you're here.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:14Speaker 4: They know I'm here. You made sure of that, didn't you?
- 11:18Speaker 4: So they're covering every way out. Doors, windows, alleys. What
- 11:22Speaker 4: do you suppose would happen if I tried one of them?
- 11:26Speaker 4: They'd probably kill you.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:28Speaker 4: I start out that window and every cop comes running
- 11:31Speaker 4: to the bottom of the fire escape to see if
- 11:32Speaker 4: I don't finish the trip. There won't be any cops
- 11:35Speaker 4: anywhere else, see? In the alleys or on the streets
- 11:38Speaker 4: or down near the river. They'll all be watching the
- 11:41Speaker 4: guy on the fire escape, won't they? And the guy
- 11:44Speaker 4: on the fire escape.
- 11:47Speaker 1: He don't need to be me, does he? It won't work.
- 11:52Speaker 1: You're crazy to think that'll work.
- 11:53Speaker 4: I got to take that chance now. You're going out
- 11:58Speaker 4: that window, mister. And you're going to take your time
- 12:01Speaker 4: doing it.
- 12:02Speaker 1: They've seen me. They know what I look like.
- 12:04Speaker 4: They saw a guy in a leather jacket right close up.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Now you're a guy in a white T-shirt three stories
- 12:10Speaker 4: over the street coming down a fire escape. That makes
- 12:13Speaker 4: you a different guy. That makes you Roy Jaleska.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Well, what if they start shooting? The minute I step
- 12:19Speaker 1: out in that window... What if they do? It's a
- 12:21Speaker 1: chance you've got to take. You don't want me to
- 12:23Speaker 1: take all the chances, do you?
- 12:25Speaker 3: Ah.
- 12:27Speaker 1: A little guy. All right, bring him in.
- 12:30Speaker 2: He's asleep. You....
- 12:34Speaker 1: He's asleep. What's his name?
- 12:39Speaker 2: Johnny.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Johnny, eh?
- 12:41Speaker 4: That's a nice original name.
- 12:45Speaker 1: You little kid, sir. I don't guess you'll put up
- 12:50Speaker 1: any arguments, will you, mister?
- 12:52Speaker 2: No.
- 12:54Speaker 1: No arguments.
- 12:55Speaker 4: And I'll be right here with your wife and kid
- 12:58Speaker 4: till I see our little schemes working, so don't try
- 13:00Speaker 4: no tricks on the way down. I won't.
- 13:03Speaker 2: What does he mean? Henry, what are you going to do?
- 13:05Speaker 1: You can read about it in the papers, lady. Now
- 13:07Speaker 1: go turn out the light.
- 13:09Speaker 2: The light?
- 13:09Speaker 1: Turn it out. But don't try nothing, neither one of you.
- 13:13Speaker 4: You got your kid in here now, and there's no
- 13:15Speaker 4: telling who'll get hit.
- 13:16Speaker 1: If I had to shoot wild. Turn it out, Jesse. Henry, I...
- 13:21Speaker 1: All right, come on. Now, you, the window. Okay, they're
- 13:34Speaker 1: all waiting. Get going.
- 13:37Speaker 2: You can't let him go out there. They'll think he's you.
- 13:41Speaker 2: They'll kill him.
- 13:45Speaker 3: I stepped out onto the slatted platform and started toward
- 13:48Speaker 3: the flimsy iron ladder. The cops had seen the light
- 13:51Speaker 3: go out and I could hear quick moving in the street.
- 13:53Speaker 3: I could feel every eye focused on me. Jaleska was right.
- 13:56Speaker 1: It was going to work.
- 13:58Speaker 2: All right, hold up there. We see you. I'll take
- 14:01Speaker 2: another step.
- 14:02Speaker 3: And then I discovered there was a part of the
- 14:03Speaker 3: plan Jaleska.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Hadn't told me. The part that would guarantee his escape.
- 14:08Speaker 1: From the window behind me, he fired down into the police.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Their guns flew up automatically and everyone was aimed at me.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Henry. Henry.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Don't touch him. Let him alone.
- 14:44Speaker 2: He's losing blood. I've got to have a doctor.
- 14:47Speaker 1: You'll get a doctor, Lisa.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Why don't you go? What are you waiting for? Haven't
- 14:51Speaker 2: you done enough? He's been shot.
- 14:52Speaker 1: He's hurt.
- 14:53Speaker 2: And you stand there. I thought you wanted to get out. Well,
- 14:56Speaker 2: get out now. Get out! Yes, ma'am. Henry, you'll be
- 15:02Speaker 2: all right. Don't try to move, darling. You'll be all right.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Is he gone? No, mister. I ain't gone.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Our little scheme don't look like it's going to work.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Coming up the stairs right now.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Don't move, Henry. Be over in a minute.
- 15:20Speaker 1: You're glad, huh?
- 15:22Speaker 2: No.
- 15:25Speaker 1: I'm not glad.
- 15:28Speaker 2: I feel sorry for you.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Out. I've been running a long time. I think it'll
- 15:37Speaker 1: feel good to stop. Funny.
- 15:41Speaker 4: When they're after you and you're running away, you look
- 15:44Speaker 4: the same, Yak, the same as you always did, but
- 15:46Speaker 4: it's different on the inside. You're all tight and twisted.
- 15:50Speaker 4: No matter what you're doing, you can't relax. You can't
- 15:52Speaker 4: get a.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Good deep breath.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I'm almost glad.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Guys are going to do a lot of bragging tomorrow.
- 16:01Speaker 1: I know you're in there. Come out with your hands
- 16:03Speaker 1: up or we'll come in and ask you.
- 16:05Speaker 4: They finally get me, Jaleska, the guy they're all afraid of.
- 16:09Speaker 2: You killed a man.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Yeah, I killed a guy. I got mad, real mad.
- 16:12Speaker 4: Things happen when you get that way. Things you can't stop.
- 16:16Speaker 4: When it's over, no matter how it happened, you're different
- 16:19Speaker 4: from anyone else.
- 16:20Speaker 1: You're a killer.
- 16:22Speaker 4: One day you're just a guy, and then something happens
- 16:25Speaker 4: and you're a killer.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Please go, please. Haven't you heard us enough?
- 16:30Speaker 1: Sure, sure, I'll go. Why not? It won't make much
- 16:33Speaker 1: difference now. Buddy, you know what I mean, don't you?
- 16:38Speaker 1: You're just a guy.
- 16:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Put your gun down. Maybe they'll give you a chance. Chance?
- 16:45Speaker 1: What chance? I've been waiting for a chance all my life.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Give her the gun. It'll be better. Forget it. Get
- 16:52Speaker 1: out of the way, lady. I'm going out.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Why don't you let me have your gun?
- 16:55Speaker 1: Get back. Get way back.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Jessie. It's all right, Henry.
- 17:00Speaker 1: That's right. Stay there. I... Stay just like that. Okay, Jaleska.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Hold it right there. Don't come any farther. Where's Johnny?
- 17:17Speaker 2: In the other room. Way in back.
- 17:19Speaker 1: There's six guns on you. You haven't got a chance.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Drop that thing and come down with your hands.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Over your head.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Oh, no.
- 17:34Speaker 2: We shouldn't have tried.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Jesse.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Yes?
- 17:39Speaker 3: Why didn't it work? They shot at me. And then
- 17:44Speaker 3: it was at least a half minute when he could
- 17:46Speaker 3: have got out that door.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Why didn't he? What made him wait?
- 17:50Speaker 2: Don't talk, darling. It's all over now.
- 17:53Speaker 1: What happened? Tell me. When the police fired at you,
- 17:58Speaker 1: he started for the door.
- 17:59Speaker 2: He was almost out. And then he stopped. He came back, Henry.
- 18:06Speaker 2: They were still shooting. He went out onto the fire
- 18:08Speaker 2: escape and lifted you into the room.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Then he started for the door again, but we could
- 18:14Speaker 1: hear the police on the stairs.
- 18:18Speaker 2: It was too late.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Is your husband all right?
- 18:24Speaker 2: I don't know. I think so. Will you get a doctor, please?
- 18:27Speaker 1: I already sent one. Take it easy, mister. You're going
- 18:32Speaker 1: to be okay. Just lie easy. Yeah, sure. You know,
- 18:40Speaker 1: it's funny. Not funny. Strange. Strange.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Strange. Suspense on CBS.
