- 0:33Welcome back to the Realtor Who Wines podcast.
- 0:35I'm Rashelle Newmeyer, the realtor who wines.
- 0:37And today I'm with Angela and her beautiful storefront here.
- 0:41And Canby Oregon at tIn and Paisley.
- 0:43Cheers, Angela.
- 0:44Thanks for having me, I appreciate it.
- 0:47It's always a good time being with you for sure.
- 0:50Thank you.
- 0:51I feel the same about you.
- 0:53Go ahead and introduce yourself to everybody and tell them who you are.
- 0:57I'm Angela Walker, and I'm a, Let's see.
- 1:01So I fit in here.
- 1:02So for 30 years and about six years ago, I decided that, my daughter was a rodeo queen.
- 1:09And we were going around to all these little towns, and one little town had a boutique on one side and the hair on the other side, and there's still Magnolia.
- 1:18Yeah, yeah.
- 1:19Yes. I love that movie.
- 1:20Yeah. And I was like, I can totally do this.
- 1:22Like, like I could do this.
- 1:24So came home and literally, during her reign as rodeo queen for Canby, shout out my daughter Kelli.
- 1:31And she's the ten side of ten. And Paisley.
- 1:34I was selling stuff out of my camper.
- 1:36Like, literally rodeo queens were like, knocking on the door and, coming in.
- 1:40Yeah.
- 1:41So that's how ten and Paisley started.
- 1:44We started in Aurora and, after that, like, started in Aurora and it was a half hair, half boutique.
- 1:51Totally amazing.
- 1:53Shout out to my previous hair clients because those girls were some OGs and they were super sweet and supportive and would wait while I'd ring somebody out.
- 2:01So, it does make a difference when you support small business.
- 2:05Absolutely.
- 2:06Anyway, and, anyhow, so we outgrew that location in a year, moved to another location right there in Aurora and House.
- 2:15We were there for three, four years, and then I moved here, and we've been here three years, and now the boutique and salon are separated because they're both too big for each other.
- 2:24They can't fit in the same venue.
- 2:26Maybe one day. But for now, this is how it works.
- 2:28So we have a spa in Aurora, and the boutique hearing can be.
- 2:31Yeah, yeah, I love it because I discovered you when you very first opened because I was living in Aurora.
- 2:37Yeah, I am.
- 2:39And, when you were in your first spa, I was living in Aurora, and your second spot is still in Aurora.
- 2:44And then when you moved here, I also lived.
- 2:45So we both moved away from Aurora at the same time. But.
- 2:49Yeah.
- 2:50Spread our wings.
- 2:51Yeah.
- 2:52We still like, you know.
- 2:53Absolutely.
- 2:54Support what's there, but definitely, I thinking about when you first opened your store, it was was that 2018 your first store for.
- 3:04Yeah, I'm six years in. Yeah.
- 3:06So Covid happened in 2020.
- 3:09And one thing I admire about you, and I've actually talked about this with so many small business owners and staff, is how you quickly pivoted.
- 3:18It pivoted.
- 3:19At least I can talk you.
- 3:21That wine's good.
- 3:22Yeah it is. Yeah.
- 3:24Shout out to pizza mountain.
- 3:27Wilsonville, Oregon.
- 3:28A week today we are drinking the sisters rosé for also 2020.
- 3:33Yeah, that was, planned, but that works out here in the Willamette Valley.
- 3:37Pete's mountain is also just total small batch winery.
- 3:40They're only open on Sundays.
- 3:42It's like a hobby. Like, but delicious wine.
- 3:45Super great family.
- 3:46If you're ever in the area on a Sunday, check them out.
- 3:48And sometimes they have food trucks and stuff up there too, which is pretty cool.
- 3:52Okay, Pete? Yeah, that's pretty it.
- 3:54It is very good.
- 3:55Go to.
- 3:55Church and Pete's on. Sunday. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:58There you go. Let's pray it. Praying, Pete.
- 4:00There you go.
- 4:00That should be a flag in church. And it's but in 2020 you did a quick pivot and instantly started selling on Facebook.
- 4:09You were doing Facebook lives and people are just sitting at home.
- 4:13I ordered so many things during the, during that time because I won.
- 4:17I just loved your bravery.
- 4:19You were trying to figure it out.
- 4:20You like Facebook?
- 4:21Didn't even have a system in place you were finding other systems to have.
- 4:25Like, just comment below and we'll get your order together.
- 4:28So, like, they were modeling stuff.
- 4:30They're holding stuff up.
- 4:31They're talking about where the product came from, the different sizes that comes in, different people will try it on.
- 4:37Sometimes you have products that are in sizes extra small to like three acts, you would sometimes have two different models with you, and mostly it was your daughters or family members.
- 4:45Because of Covid, you can only have yeah, so many people near you.
- 4:49But I just thought that was genius.
- 4:51Like, what gave you that idea to, like, do that?
- 4:54Like, we were just like, oh, we got to do this or we're going to close.
- 4:56Or like.
- 4:57I think that for me, it was such an uncertain time for so many people, but as you know, a hair stylist and I was still doing hair, like they just said, you can't do hair.
- 5:08And when you work for yourself, there's no unemployment.
- 5:10And then they said, oh, you can get unemployment if you do this.
- 5:13But like, it wasn't working. Right.
- 5:15So I was watching, you know, I had the benefit of having the boutique where I could still kind of try and sell some things, you know, online.
- 5:24But all of my poor hair girls, like they were just told you no longer have income.
- 5:28Right?
- 5:29And, that was devastating.
- 5:32And like, if there's one thing like I'm a ride or die.
- 5:35So I was like, we got to figure this out.
- 5:37So like, I tried really hard, to help them.
- 5:41We didn't take any grants or anything during Covid because I was like, skeptic kept honest. Yeah, I was only there.
- 5:48Yeah.
- 5:48Later they were going to come back and be like, actually, that wasn't this, you know, it was that. And so. Right.
- 5:53We just like dug and and I think that's pretty much how I've always done business and even my life where, our family motto is adapt, improvise and overcome.
- 6:04We also talk a lot about eating the frog.
- 6:06Doing things.
- 6:07Yeah. Like, we in our film, we're like, well, you just need to eat the frog.
- 6:09And that really means, like, doing the thing you don't want to do, and you're just, like, dreading.
- 6:14Yeah.
- 6:15And just, like, doing it, that doesn't mean that everything happens perfectly, but, honestly, it was just like a survival moment.
- 6:25Sure.
- 6:26Well, I thought you totally rose to the occasion.
- 6:29And I was so nervous, too, because we saw so many businesses not survive.
- 6:33And I was just like, oh, order whatever you need.
- 6:36I don't want you to go anywhere, and I.
- 6:38But I wasn't the only one.
- 6:39You had a ton of people in the community that were like, Angela, stay around, we need you. But also you were trying.
- 6:46And I think people recognized that and wanted to support that.
- 6:49Oh, yeah. Yeah, for sure.
- 6:50And it was, it's so interesting now to see women who have been chopping me all six years to, like, come in and they're just like you, where they'll be like, I remember when your store literally had four racks, like, I remember when like, yeah.
- 7:05So because I think when you're running a small business, you're always in survival mode.
- 7:11Like, I'm trying really hard to have more of that owner mindset and learn that.
- 7:17And, I think you're always in survival mode.
- 7:19You're like, okay, well, I got to this ledge, but now I feel like that ledge isn't enough and I need to get to the next ledge.
- 7:25And how do I get to the next legend? Right.
- 7:27So it literally feels like you're playing, like that game Jumanji.
- 7:32Yeah.
- 7:33Now what?
- 7:34And now what's coming to me, too? Yeah.
- 7:36Well, and I think part of the reason you specifically feel that way is you have a very customer forward mindset.
- 7:42And so if a client says here like, oh man, I really wish you had shoes, then you're like, oh, okay, I need to make space for shoes.
- 7:49I need to go order shoes.
- 7:51And then you're like, well, now I need a bigger spot.
- 7:52So and I think that's what happens for you sometimes too, is like, you just want to provide what the clients are asking for a new adapter business kind of based on demand sometimes too.
- 8:02That was a plus and a negative and actually a hard lesson to learn because a lot of women will be like, oh, I would love it if you would carry like, shoes, right?
- 8:09So then I would go and I'd find shoes and I invest in shoes.
- 8:12And by the time I could make that happen, that girl has already found her shoes, right? Yeah.
- 8:16She never.
- 8:17She's walking. Around.
- 8:18And it's not that she doesn't love me and will come by, but she's.
- 8:21She's already moved. She's like, girl, I got four pairs now.
- 8:23That's great.
- 8:23You got some? I'll check you later. Yeah.
- 8:26But that didn't always happen, honestly.
- 8:28But sometimes it does, so I've had to learn a lot.
- 8:32I no longer do hair like.
- 8:34I think it's been two years now since I've been able to do hair just because this grew bigger.
- 8:38And I always thought, oh, this is will be like passive income where I don't have to physically touch somebody to make money.
- 8:44Like, I can hire amazing girls to work here.
- 8:47And, I knew it would be hard work, but what I did not realize at that time is all of the steps that go into it, right?
- 8:55I just I didn't realize it.
- 8:57For me, customer service is so huge.
- 8:59Yeah.
- 9:00So huge because I know that people have tons of choices where they're going to shop, and I know that they can shop anywhere, so why should they shop me?
- 9:09You know, just like for you as a realtor, you're like, there are a lot of realtors like that.
- 9:12Why should they pick me?
- 9:16I think our in stores.
- 9:17I bring one. Arm and go, I think that our in-store experience is outstanding.
- 9:24It is.
- 9:24And what I'm really struggling with is figuring out how to create that in-store experience online.
- 9:34Like, I think it's.
- 9:35Very, very difficult.
- 9:37I have a boutique bestie and her online is poppin like she's amazing.
- 9:41Her and her mom have been doing it for a really long time together.
- 9:45And she's awesome.
- 9:46And so we talk a lot about like, she's like, oh, I really want my brick and mortar to pop in.
- 9:50And I'm like, I really want my oh, nice.
- 9:52Yeah, that's not funny.
- 9:53Yeah. So it's it's really fun to have those people.
- 9:55But customer service wise, I want everyone to feel welcome.
- 9:59And my I've told so many girls and I think I've even said I'm like, oh, you're hesitating.
- 10:04If you're hesitating, just put it back on the rack. Yeah.
- 10:07I don't want something from me to sit in your closet.
- 10:09Absolutely wanted.
- 10:11I have always appreciated.
- 10:12You are always very honest, but also your staff in a kind way too.
- 10:15Like, let's say on a different size or, you know, that's not your color, sweetie.
- 10:20Like, which is nice, like, instead of being like, oh, that looks great, then you're walking around out there not looking that great, you know? Yeah.
- 10:27Especially if you come in by yourself.
- 10:29You kind of rely on the staff of the store to help you and not just to sell.
- 10:33And I have always appreciated that about shopping at your store throughout your different staff, because some of your staff has gone off to college and like, moved on and done other stuff.
- 10:43But every time I come in, everyone's always so kind but also gives really good advice.
- 10:48They're like, that doesn't look that nice, you know?
- 10:51Like another kind way.
- 10:52Of thumb is if a girl comes out and she's confident, there is no reason to squash that shine, right?
- 10:58Because wearing clothes and fashion and whatever you pick, it literally has everything to do with your attitude.
- 11:06Because we like I'm sure we can all remember that girl that you'd be like oh my God she's amazing.
- 11:10Look, she's wearing two different socks to school and I think she's awesome.
- 11:13When we were in high school or wherever like she did that because she didn't.
- 11:17Care, right.
- 11:17And we all thought she was cool for it.
- 11:20So you really just have to, like, own what works for you.
- 11:23But I also recognize not everybody has that personality, right?
- 11:28And that's where we come in.
- 11:30We're like, hey, you know, have you thought about this?
- 11:32Have you thought about wearing it this way?
- 11:34And a lot of girls that doesn't come to them naturally.
- 11:37Yeah.
- 11:37I think a struggle for a lot of boutiques now is fast fashion.
- 11:41I want right now.
- 11:42Now piece lines going for me.
- 11:44Yeah, fashion. Fast fashion. Front page.
- 11:48I think it's very interesting. And, I have a hamburger theory where I think that buying from these other brands that are inexpensive and, I don't want to give them names, but starts with an S and one starts with a T.
- 12:03Yeah.
- 12:03But I feel like when you buy from them, you can get a hamburger anywhere.
- 12:08You can get a hamburger from, you know, the yellow arches, right?
- 12:12You can, but you can also get a hamburger at a really nice restaurant.
- 12:16And you can't tell me that that experience isn't butter.
- 12:19You can't tell me.
- 12:20Or the quality.
- 12:20You can't. Tell me the quality. Is how you feel. Afterwards.
- 12:23Tell me the burger isn't better. Yeah.
- 12:26And that's what I really want people to feel like they bought from me.
- 12:33And it's like getting a hamburger at a really nice restaurant.
- 12:37Yeah, like, yeah, you can go get it somewhere else, but it is not equal to what you're getting here.
- 12:41No. Well, and I think that's something to be said to you about the quality of wines that you pick to be in the store to like some of the online marketers that you're talking about, like it looks one way and it shows up one way, and you wash it once and then it has holes in it and stuff.
- 12:57So like, yeah, you got it for $6.
- 12:59But yeah. So I only got to wear it one time. Right. You know.
- 13:02And I still have pieces in my wardrobe that I got six years ago that still look great from your shop.
- 13:08And I just think, like, you always get what you pay for, you know, I think that's a very true statement.
- 13:13We try to carry a little bit of both.
- 13:15I call it like the target brand and the Nordstrom brand.
- 13:18So we try to carry something for that Nordstrom girl who's like, I, I will pay more because I am paying attention to fabric stitching.
- 13:25Yeah. And all of those things.
- 13:27And I will buy a piece that I want to last.
- 13:29But there's also the girl who's like this is my budget.
- 13:33And you know, I'm okay if it's only last, you know, three years.
- 13:35But if you take care of it, it is going to last for six years.
- 13:38So we try to have shopping for both people so that everybody can, you know, continue.
- 13:44I will say that, like, even for us, you know, we love to give back to our community.
- 13:49Yeah you do.
- 13:50That is like one of my like, goals was I wanted to be a business where people were like, oh my gosh, look what she does for the softball team, for the for her team, for the whoever.
- 14:01But what I've discovered as I've grown, more people have asked for items and less people have supported.
- 14:10Yeah.
- 14:10I think that that is like a dying society.
- 14:13Yeah.
- 14:14Where people don't realize the more they don't support those smaller businesses, they are supporting their kids or whatever, they're not going to be able to do that.
- 14:21Yeah.
- 14:23It's sad to me because I mean that's what like our whole I think country was built on like a community.
- 14:29Yeah, 100%.
- 14:31I think another way to that, your store, you say like you like it to feel welcoming is inclusion.
- 14:38Because I know sometimes I go into boutiques and in smaller towns and the size large fits like a small and I'm like, and then I leave like super sad because, like, I'm not petite.
- 14:48That's not a secret, right?
- 14:49So yeah, I know, and I like that you can relate to that.
- 14:53So I like that you carry a wide variety of sizes in your store, or it's not just like one rack is like bigger sizes, like you have multiple pieces throughout the store that are small for the smaller girls and the bigger for the bigger girls.
- 15:06So we when I started, the store was a size 22.
- 15:09So I remember shopping and I go with my friends that were smaller.
- 15:13And first off, you don't want to ask the person who's dropping like, hey, do you have anything?
- 15:17Do you have anything for, you know, plus size?
- 15:19Because that's embarrassing, right?
- 15:21But then they would like tell you like, oh yeah, this corner. Yeah.
- 15:24So all of your friends are shopping the whole store, right.
- 15:26And you're in like corner corner.
- 15:28Yeah. So I was like, nobody puts baby in the corner.
- 15:30That's that's absolutely not.
- 15:32Going to happen.
- 15:34I love that movie.
- 15:35Made you, It's a good one.
- 15:37So in our store, we've kind of done, like, a whole, like, coloring system.
- 15:42So, like, if there's a purple rubber band, it means that if it's oversize and our plush, if there's a white rubber band, it means that it is petite and or junior sizing.
- 15:49Yeah.
- 15:50For us, that means that people who come in can shop the whole store, and the whole store doesn't come in plus size.
- 15:57Like, where can I be honest and direct about that?
- 15:59Like, I would love to try really hard and but plus size is also really, really hard to get girls to come in and buy.
- 16:07Sure. Because I think that it's hard.
- 16:09They're kind of trying not to.
- 16:10Well, they are because you think boutique, you think small, right?
- 16:13Expensive, you think small.
- 16:15You think they're not going to have anything for me.
- 16:17Right.
- 16:18And that's not who we are.
- 16:20And no, I, who I wanted to be.
- 16:21Well, and I like you have brands too that have like a lot of flexibility.
- 16:25And so there's been times where I've gotten super excited.
- 16:28I'm normally a size large, you know, and sometimes, like, I walked out of here with a small because the fabric was.
- 16:35Giving runs or.
- 16:36Yeah, I mean, this is a great example.
- 16:38I yeah, this is a small and it's super roomy. Yeah.
- 16:40So I mean this top is going to fit a variety of sizes and people.
- 16:44And for a gal who is more Starburst, that is that's what we like to call it because, you know, maybe that style out with that girl.
- 16:52But you still star.
- 16:53You can still. Shine.
- 16:54Yeah, I love that. That's how. That goes. But, she's just going to have a little less room.
- 16:59It's not going to be as flowy for her. But she it still going to feel comfortable.
- 17:02Yeah I'm confident in it.
- 17:04Absolutely.
- 17:05And that's what's so important. Yeah.
- 17:09How do you like.
- 17:10Because like you said you were inspired one day and you're like, I'm opening a boutique.
- 17:14So like, how did you take those first steps, even know how to open a boutique called a by product from like, distributor, like distributors or like going to market and stuff like, how did you learn to do all of that?
- 17:27I was doing hair.
- 17:29I, dabbled in it a little bit, like in my little hair booth.
- 17:33I had like some earrings and some, like, jewelry and things like that, you know?
- 17:37So I kind of already knew that portion of it, if that makes sense.
- 17:42And then honestly, a Google go will be your friend.
- 17:46Yeah, you you can learn a lot.
- 17:48But shout out to the boutique hub because I did join the boutique Hub.
- 17:51So if you're somebody who thinks they want to, you know, start a boutique, the boutique hub is a great place to get a lot of information.
- 17:59I think it's 30 bucks a month.
- 18:00I don't know, I auto pay or so, whatever it comes up.
- 18:03But yeah, but it's well worth it.
- 18:05Yes, it's a great community and there's a ton of information there.
- 18:08And it's a good start.
- 18:10I would say that I am a much better buyer now than I was six years ago.
- 18:14Sure. Well, naturally.
- 18:16Yeah. You've learned. A lot. Yeah.
- 18:17Oh my gosh.
- 18:19And you've gone to more shows and like, you've made more contacts and stuff.
- 18:22So make sense.
- 18:23And I'm definitely, like I love to buy in person.
- 18:27Which is hard because you know I've got kids at home still and we, you know, have the spa and my husband, you know he's got his job and things.
- 18:36So yeah it's definitely difficult to like figure out how to navigate all the things.
- 18:40And I think that every mom and I know this wasn't the pivot that we were going to, but I think every mom who runs a business and or is, you know, trying to do both when you're at home, you feel guilty that you're not pouring into your business.
- 18:55And when you're in your business, you feel guilty that you're not pouring in all your kids.
- 18:59You couldn't have said that.
- 19:01More true like that is such a true.
- 19:03State and it's so sad.
- 19:05Then we have to feel that way, because I will guarantee you, my husband does not feel, oh yeah, it's because he doesn't love his kids, right?
- 19:12And now because he doesn't want to be successful, right?
- 19:13But because it does not cross his mind.
- 19:15Yeah, it's not there.
- 19:16It's not part of the car cards is not in his DNA.
- 19:19Yeah.
- 19:19Well, and I think that's just a little bit more of the nature versus nurture.
- 19:24Like women are very nurturing.
- 19:25So we're always thinking about that, like nurturing the business, nurturing the family men when they're home, they're like, I'm home on that work, that work.
- 19:32So like, they just don't think about the too as much as we do.
- 19:35Again, this isn't man hating by any nurse.
- 19:38It's just different. It's just different.
- 19:39Like we call my husband air when he comes there.
- 19:41Like his his nickname at the boutique is H.R.
- 19:44because he comes in, he's like, yeah, you probably should be doing that.
- 19:46Like, a or he'll come in and fix things or put things up or.
- 19:49Yeah, like my printer is randomly no longer printing.
- 19:52Like why I clicked nothing.
- 19:54So I understand what you does.
- 19:55I turn it on, I turn it off, I plug it in, I check it out.
- 19:59I don't have a problem with me.
- 20:00And yeah, it's it's literally ghosting me because it'll be like four pages.
- 20:04Here's one. Of them. Right.
- 20:05And then I of think about giving you yeah.
- 20:08They act like we're no longer together and you're just not getting that.
- 20:11So I'm giving you a one word answers.
- 20:13Yeah. So no, I think that, it's really it's difficult, but it's also inspiring to see how many women are now being like, it's okay.
- 20:25It's okay that I do both.
- 20:26It's okay that I, you know, do this, this and that.
- 20:31I think that's really amazing.
- 20:33I'm trying to, I love a microphone, as you can see.
- 20:39Yeah, I do, because I love meeting people and talking to people and learning their story and hearing where that came from.
- 20:44That was the part of doing hair that, like, was so fun for me.
- 20:48And to have a girl come in and be like, oh, I had such a bad day.
- 20:51I mean, yeah, or at least how we fix ourselves as women.
- 20:56We're going to buy a shirt or earrings, right?
- 20:58We're going to get our hair done.
- 21:00We're going to talk to a bestie. Right?
- 21:02Or we're gonna drink some wine.
- 21:03Definitely. Definitely.
- 21:05Right. Yeah. That's how it goes down, like. Absolutely.
- 21:07Ourselves. And, that has been so fun to, like, inspire women and help them feel better about themselves.
- 21:14Have not only and hair, but also like that's kind of my premise here as well.
- 21:19But so I am considering, kind of dabbling in my own, like, you know, not podcast because I'm not as cool as my girl over here.
- 21:27Oh my gosh, you could totally do podcasts.
- 21:30Nobody wants to hear me ramble.
- 21:31So I would subscribe.
- 21:34So like and. Subscribe.
- 21:35You know, I, I might try and ramble.
- 21:37At one point I tried doing a podcast on the podcast.
- 21:39Sorry, got that wrong cause I'm looking at you.
- 21:41But one time I tried doing a blog and it was called Once the Dust Settles.
- 21:44So I'm considering that I really like them.
- 21:46Yeah, and.
- 21:47Yes, I think they.
- 21:47Should because I, I do love inspiring people and helping people and, I think it's good for people to know it's okay to mess up.
- 21:58Yeah, it's okay to want to be okay.
- 22:00Yeah, yeah, I have to have a perfect kitchen.
- 22:02Like I've got laundry right now.
- 22:04Y'all laying in so many places and, like, it's.
- 22:08It's okay.
- 22:09That doesn't make me a bad person or a not good business person or not good.
- 22:12Mom. Right?
- 22:13It just makes me a busy person who decided to focus on something else.
- 22:16Yeah, choosing priorities like, doesn't matter if the laundry gets put away right now or this other task is done, you know.
- 22:24You struggle with that too.
- 22:25Like the priority part I do.
- 22:27One thing about the kids is that I've learned along the way.
- 22:31A great coach told me, like, include your kids in your goal setting because then when you miss something, because we have to miss something sometimes, right?
- 22:39We can't be at every single game, every single.
- 22:42Because my daughter, she would have me at every practice, even like which I am when I'm coaching her.
- 22:47Well, I've met her and you're an amazing mom, and she she challenges you because she's been on some of your TikToks and things. Yeah.
- 22:53And I've watched her grow up.
- 22:56So you have known her.
- 22:57For a little mini me.
- 22:58At least she had.
- 22:59That girl's got confidence oozing and sometimes too much.
- 23:03Yeah, sometimes too much. But, she would even want me at practice.
- 23:07Right?
- 23:08And so sometimes I can't.
- 23:10Like, in real estate, a lot of times I'm showing houses in the evenings or on the weekends, and that's when she's not at school.
- 23:15So she does mommy work a lot and then coach told me once I conclude her and your goals, because then she doesn't see, oh, mommy is at work.
- 23:23She says, oh, mommy is doing this. So like, yeah.
- 23:26So right now our current goal as of a power team, Rylan and I is if I sell so many transactions or do so many transactions this year in real estate, Rylan and I will go to Disney Tokyo next year.
- 23:38So if I'm am.
- 23:39At I know not Disney are all through and I know.
- 23:41We model it on this.
- 23:41Yeah Disney cruise yes.
- 23:43We bonded over that as being.
- 23:45More will go yeah you can send us.
- 23:47Yeah Andre so you can't see on he's behind the camera.
- 23:51He's also Disney.
- 23:52Yet him and his wife are Disney people.
- 23:54So Disney adults shout out we love you so much.
- 23:57Yeah.
- 23:58While we're there we're going to need you.
- 23:58That's it.
- 24:00I said, yeah, he's even wearing a Mickey shirt today.
- 24:02It's like perfect.
- 24:03Yeah. Yes.
- 24:05Oh my gosh I love that.
- 24:06But so Rylan I had to miss something last week and she said was okay mom, you're trying to get us to Tokyo.
- 24:12So like it is working because she understands, like, oh, mommy was out doing this because I want to take her to Tokyo.
- 24:19Not because I just care about business.
- 24:21Like I'm actually doing it for a goal together.
- 24:24And that's totally, like, pivoted.
- 24:26How she sees stuff and it makes me feel less guilty knowing she's not like my mom.
- 24:31Miss us again.
- 24:32And she's like, way to go, mom.
- 24:34And I'm like, oh, thank you. Then I feel like way better.
- 24:36Yeah, I love that.
- 24:37But it is hard.
- 24:38I've started incorporating my voice because, I have five kids total and they range from the age of three all the way down to 14.
- 24:45So we like to call it round one, round to aim high fashion.
- 24:48Sorry girl.
- 24:49And we just re-enlisted.
- 24:50Okay, that's that's sad because the next question everybody asks is like, oh did you remarry?
- 24:54No, no.
- 24:55We re-enlisted.
- 24:56That's how much we love not having time.
- 24:59And, tax deductions.
- 25:02That's where we're at with our life.
- 25:03Yeah.
- 25:03You know what we need right now? A child.
- 25:06Yeah.
- 25:06You know, it would really be great is to do that a.
- 25:09Whole that old school. High school.
- 25:11Do you like sleep? No.
- 25:13Me neither. Let's get another. Child.
- 25:15But it's been fun because, I think the boys thought that the boutique thing wasn't for them, because, you know, I had the girls first.
- 25:22And my older son, he, you know, kind of did his own thing and came our family, like, later, like high school years.
- 25:27Yeah.
- 25:28And, but my two younger sons, they're like, what would I, you know, do, but like, so I've had them.
- 25:33They're now working events.
- 25:35Shout out to that buddy.com.
- 25:37Yeah.
- 25:37People out and or they, help put the stuff back during events.
- 25:42Which has been awesome.
- 25:42And they're all about it after they got a little Changjiang, they were like, oh, I did How to Sell Flowers one time.
- 25:49And my youngest son is he is all business.
- 25:53Yeah. My older son was like, yeah, mom, that sounds great.
- 25:56Younger son.
- 25:57What's the ROI?
- 25:58Yeah. Who's going to pay a on selling off?
- 26:00Who's paying for the, you know, credit card fees?
- 26:03I was like like, I'm a little scared of you, but I'm also proud of you because the. Wow.
- 26:06Who asks those questions? Age of 11.
- 26:09Like he was 11 at the time.
- 26:10Yeah. He's 14 now.
- 26:12And if I set a goal where I'm like, oh, when we do this, we're going to do that.
- 26:17And then if I decide to spend the money on something else, it's like, well, what happened to that goal? Yeah.
- 26:20So like you said, Tokyo.
- 26:22Yeah, exactly. So, yeah.
- 26:24To keep that goal and, like, make sure you're, you know, being true to your word, which I think is super duper important on both. Yeah.
- 26:30Well, and also from an accountability standpoint.
- 26:33Well, no, I don't want to let her down.
- 26:34So like, I'm going to do whatever I can to hit my goals.
- 26:37So we're going to Tokyo.
- 26:38So you like to know that your children 100% are watching you?
- 26:42Totally.
- 26:43I like and I, I don't think I got that when I was doing hair because I don't think they were.
- 26:47The kids were around as much, but like, my boys think it's funny.
- 26:52Like I told those doing the podcast today because you're a full mom.
- 26:55Yeah.
- 26:55And I was like, I, yeah, because she wants to talk to me.
- 26:58And he laughed.
- 26:59And I was like, dude, I really do.
- 27:01What then you think, like, I do.
- 27:02Have teenagers I. Like? Yeah, you know, I.
- 27:04Think nothing you do will be cool to that, you.
- 27:06Know, somebody like me. Eventually.
- 27:06It'll be fine.
- 27:09Everyone thinks I'm awesome.
- 27:10He thinks that Lala is amazing.
- 27:12So her grandson is so cute.
- 27:14Oh my God, he's cute.
- 27:15My granddaughter is like, oh, that girl's feisty.
- 27:19Yeah, I see, but, it's really fun to be in all avenues.
- 27:23Like to be a mom, a grandma, like.
- 27:26And then I have older kids, so, like, I can do all that with them.
- 27:29Drink and do whatever drink on the ones I see.
- 27:32Yeah. Friends. Yeah.
- 27:33And then to also have younger kids that are now still in middle school and high school.
- 27:37So it's very weird to be an.
- 27:38All in a business owner on top of it.
- 27:40I'm all type small type business owner. Yeah.
- 27:42But I will say just kind of like wrapping it up a little bit.
- 27:46But what I will say is the thing that I absolutely love about my current business, is one that ladies like you, when you came and like multiple times where I've been like, oh my gosh, am I really doing this because I think imposter syndrome.
- 28:05Oh my gosh, a real thing for sure.
- 28:07Being in real estate, it's also big and boutique.
- 28:09Let's just. Begin life.
- 28:10Like even with mom stuff. You're like, am I a good mom?
- 28:12Am I doing the right thing?
- 28:12Am I ruining her? That?
- 28:15Is this topic going to happen on the therapy couch later?
- 28:18Exactly. Yeah.
- 28:19So having those people that you know are like, how do I grow?
- 28:23You're good. Like, I see you, I see you, you're doing good.
- 28:26Like. Yeah.
- 28:27And like, so what I would just say like is, you know, people in general, don't be afraid to tell someone that you see that they're doing good.
- 28:34Don't be afraid to be like, hey, I have multiple people who come in and are starting small businesses, candles, earrings, teachers, whatever.
- 28:43And I tell all of them, use me as a resource.
- 28:47If you have a question and you want to ask.
- 28:50Absolutely. Here's my number. Reach out.
- 28:52If I can help you, I will. Yeah.
- 28:54Because I remember when I began, I was scared to tell somebody I had a question because I didn't want them to think I was copying.
- 29:01Them or that you didn't know what you were doing.
- 29:03I'm like, oh, well, don't shop with her.
- 29:03And she doesn't know what she's doing.
- 29:06Yeah.
- 29:06So I really want my business to reflect that community over competition.
- 29:11Yes. Moment and where?
- 29:14And I know you do this in real estate, too, because I've had other people mention your name to me and I'm like, oh, that's my friend.
- 29:19And it's in a positive light.
- 29:19So yeah, to know that, oh, that's scary.
- 29:22I haven't told you that. I'm sorry.
- 29:24Because no, I'm not being a very good friend.
- 29:26Sorry. Gosh, I told right now and I do on record.
- 29:28So that's even better than calling you not on record.
- 29:31So ten points for Gryffindor, what.
- 29:34100. Percent?
- 29:35Yes, exactly.
- 29:36But I think that it's really important to remember.
- 29:39And I always say this, that, you know what?
- 29:41Old Navy and Target both sell white t shirts, and they're almost always in the same parking lot.
- 29:45Like that's yard, right?
- 29:47But they're almost always by each other.
- 29:49They don't fight over selling t shirt. No.
- 29:51Instead they just stand there.
- 29:53Lane Powell or Boat fill the fill the whole sure.
- 29:56Keep going.
- 29:57And I think that that's a great thing to do.
- 30:00And I absolutely try really hard to do that.
- 30:02I mean, I'm not saying I don't have a crying moment occasionally.
- 30:05Yeah, we all do that. Yeah.
- 30:06I don't sing it out occasionally because that's what I do when I'm stressed.
- 30:09But I think it's really important to if you see a friend and she's got a small business and maybe you don't support it because it's not your style, or maybe you don't use your friend that's a real estate agent because you're, you know, don't want to. It's too close to home.
- 30:22Yeah, but that just happens.
- 30:24Yeah.
- 30:24I know a lot of agents that get frustrated, like, oh, so-and-so didn't use me and I'm so mad and I'm like, the one, you can't be mad over something that was never yours.
- 30:33Like, you didn't lose anything that you never had.
- 30:35That was never your transaction.
- 30:37That was never your house to sell because no one asked you.
- 30:39So chill out the two.
- 30:42Maybe they feel uncomfortable because they didn't want you to know their situation.
- 30:45Maybe they're thinking about getting divorced and they don't want you to know yet because you know, their whole sphere, things like that.
- 30:50Like there's just, I don't know, like we take stuff so personal when it's not even our thing that take personal.
- 30:56And I love that you feel the same way in the boutiques.
- 30:58Like. Yeah. Area.
- 30:59It's important to just even if you're not going to use that person or do that thing, you can do a small thing by shouting her out, right, share her stuff on your page.
- 31:10Like that costs you nothing but like two seconds.
- 31:12Comment on something of hers and say man I see you're working so hard.
- 31:15Good job.
- 31:15Yeah.
- 31:16Because it literally takes two seconds to make somebody's life different and to make them feel better about themselves. Yeah.
- 31:22And I think in a world where there's a lot of negativity, if you can be the little tiny shine that like, sparks somebody and makes them feel like I can keep going.
- 31:30You shouldn't use that.
- 31:31Yeah.
- 31:32As this thing, just say it in the moment, too.
- 31:34Like how might oil change the other day?
- 31:36And the the person that was doing it was a gal.
- 31:39And you don't see that every time you pull up to a shop.
- 31:42And she was in there and I said, I hope this doesn't offend you, but I think it's like kick ass that you changed my oil today.
- 31:48And she was like, really?
- 31:49You know? And I was like, yeah.
- 31:50It was like, I think more women should be in this trade and like, good for you for being in this trade.
- 31:55And she was like, thank you.
- 31:57Because, you know, people probably are like, oh, a woman's changing my oil.
- 32:00Or parents that took the time to show for it, right?
- 32:02My daughter was really good at that I am not.
- 32:04Yeah, well, I just you could tell like, people probably don't say that to her often.
- 32:08Instead, it's probably opposite.
- 32:10Like, can, like, I change my oil and. Sorry, I'm.
- 32:13Not a lot to you, but I will guarantee you she told at least 4 or 5 of her friends.
- 32:17So for sure, positivity travels farther than negativity every time.
- 32:22Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 32:22And that's also why I think obviously you exude that, right?
- 32:28You just said that we've talked about it multiple times.
- 32:30And that's why people feel that way when like they come into your stores, it's like you want them to feel good about themselves.
- 32:36Like obviously you run a business, but at the end of the day, you're trying to help someone feel better about themselves, leaving with confidence, feeling good in their clothes.
- 32:43I think that shows.
- 32:44So if you're ever in the Cambie area, you definitely should come and attend and place you should definitely come to town in Paisley.
- 32:51It's been one of my favorite stores ever since it opened.
- 32:54If you know me personally, do you know that because you've been all over my social media for years?
- 33:00Even my family, when I did that shop small event and Aurora, they're like, well, it's a cute store.
- 33:05Like they still talk.
- 33:06I'm like, oh, she's, can be an now and stuff.
- 33:08But yeah, my family knows, like buy me presents from here.
- 33:12I also want to shout out my girls.
- 33:14In Aurora at Well Rooted.
- 33:15Yeah, I can't leave my girls alone because they're amazing at what they do.
- 33:20There at the spa. Yeah. And.
- 33:23How many girls do you have there right now?
- 33:24I think I have 5 or 6 now.
- 33:25It's a mrs. and eyelash girl.
- 33:29Extension specialist, color girl.
- 33:31It's amazing.
- 33:31Are they all taking new clients?
- 33:33I think there's only two that are currently like, I know the massage girl does take people the eyelash girl.
- 33:38And then there's only like the hair girls are pretty.
- 33:40Yeah.
- 33:41One hair girl that is taking people that she's.
- 33:43She knows Maya.
- 33:44So there you go. Yeah, I noticed that a lot.
- 33:47And, the hair industry that, like, it's hard to find a good hairdressers.
- 33:51Don't you find that, like, you don't let her go, and then they're always booked, so they're, like, never taking new clients because they're always. But still.
- 33:58That's awesome.
- 33:58I think that is, that's a craft in itself, 100%. Yeah.
- 34:03You get how you get, booked thing.
- 34:05And I have a lot of thoughts on that.
- 34:06And usually when a new girl comes in and if she doesn't really have a full book, I'll be like, hey, let me like, let me mom you up a little bit like you of s is your own business.
- 34:14You do your own thing.
- 34:15But let me like, use me as a resource.
- 34:17So I think without really realizing it, I've done the same thing here where I'm like, oh, you're doing a small business.
- 34:22Like I use me as a resource.
- 34:23Yeah, not that I know everything because y'all.
- 34:26But you have learned stuff along the way.
- 34:28Like I can't even get my printer to work, so I'm still working on.
- 34:32Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:33But you know, some stuff.
- 34:35Yeah. I like, got work in progress.
- 34:37Well, I like that.
- 34:38Like that little rock in the oyster that, like. Oh, yeah.
- 34:41Like you're gonna be a girl any day. Yeah.
- 34:43Any day you need any day now.
- 34:45The pearl pearls. Come on.
- 34:46Any day now, girls, I'm gonna shine.
- 34:48That's how this is gonna go.
- 34:50Oh. Hey, guys, are there any.
- 34:52You do a lot of fun events in the store.
- 34:54And, like, especially seasonally.
- 34:56You do a lot of events coming up. Yeah.
- 34:57So can you tell us some events that are coming out? Yeah.
- 35:00Boutique crawl in downtown Canby.
- 35:01And that's on April 26th.
- 35:03Okay. I have to give date.
- 35:04So hopefully I got this right.
- 35:06That's okay. Yeah.
- 35:07But I think that might be after this one comes out.
- 35:10A May 6th, though.
- 35:12We are part of the Cow Hides and Cocktails fashion show.
- 35:14Oh, my gosh, that sounds so fun.
- 35:16Event.
- 35:17And, the girls that run that are nice enough, to allow me to work the mic.
- 35:21So I'm the emcee, so.
- 35:23You'll get a. Sorry. So the. Whole night.
- 35:26Well, not the whole night.
- 35:27Just the fashion show, but that is a super fun event.
- 35:30So we do that.
- 35:31We also do a mother's day event.
- 35:32I think it's on May 11th.
- 35:34So we love to do events.
- 35:36And then during the summer we see you at the well I guess it's like I say the same bull rodeo can be rodeo or the fair.
- 35:45Yeah we did but. Just at the same time.
- 35:46We did gather last year which is a big event.
- 35:48And that was like the farthest event I've ever driven, like when it got slow here. Like you were talking about pivoting when it got.
- 35:55Yeah, here I was like, well, what are we going to do?
- 35:57Like this is so slow.
- 35:58So I was like, well, I'm going to look for some pop ups because, yeah, we're not.
- 36:01And I can go where there are people like, and nobody shows up at a fair or an event that has a shopping without some dollars.
- 36:09Right?
- 36:10Like, I hate to say that, but that's that's true.
- 36:12Yeah.
- 36:13Well, and people use fairs and puppets and things as a chance to check out other shops like so, and especially at a fair because it's a county wide thing.
- 36:22So they might not come to Canby all the time, but if they see you at the fair then and then they know you have a storefront there, like, oh, you're not just at the fair, I can come back.
- 36:30When I do a pop up. For me, it's more, like I think of it as like online dating.
- 36:35Like I'm more like, I want you to have the little tiny experience.
- 36:40Like a little mini experience. Yeah.
- 36:42And I want you to get to know us, to know that we can be besties.
- 36:45So even if you buy nothing, that doesn't upset me.
