- 0:22SPEAKER_01: Hello, everybody, and welcome back to another episode of the Tortured Fans Department Podcast.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: As always, I'm your host, Sean Boyle.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: I've got two guests with me today.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: It's a bit of a lighthearted, fun episode.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: We're in the dog days of summer.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: I'm joined once again by Mr.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Mark Monera.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Mark, how are you?
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: I am great.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: It's great to be here again, Sean.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: Thanks for having me.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: It's always a pleasure, and we are joined by none other than Mr.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Jeremy Good, the return of the worm.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Wormy, how are you?
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Sean, Mark, doing well.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Great to be back.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Hello, greetings, salutations.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: It's always a pleasure to have you as well, Jeremy.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: We've kind of got a hodgepodge of topics to get into today.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: We're going to be talking about the MLB trade deadline.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: That's why we've brought in on our baseball expert, Mark Monera.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: We've got some football to kind of talk about.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: We're grasping at straws a bit in terms of whether it's actually headline worthy or not.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: But like I said, we're in the dog days of summer and we're aching for football to come our way, so we have to talk about it a little bit.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: And then we do have to talk about LeBron James joining the Philadelphia 76ers, which has not been discussed yet on this program.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: So we'll get to all of that.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Boys, I have an introductory topic, an introductory question to start the show.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: I would like to make an announcement, and I would kind of like your feedback on the announcement, but then also your opinion on the matter.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: This announcement's important to me.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: The first ever newsletter I wrote for the Torture Trans department last summer was right after the song Rain Me In by Sam Fender and Olivia Dean came out.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: I have decided since that moment in time that that is my favorite song of all time.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: So that's big news.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: That is my number one.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: If somebody asks me, what's your favorite song?
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: It is Rain Me In, Sam Fender, Olivia Dean.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: They just did it this weekend at Wallapalooza.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: It was the first ever performance in the United States.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: Olivia brought Sam out on stage.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: I love the both of them.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: The vibes between them were immaculate.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: The song is incredible.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: It's now the longest tenured song at number one in UK history.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: Broke the Guinness World Record.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: So I'm not alone in loving it, but I just wanted to get this opinion on record.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: It is my favorite ever.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: Boys, what do you think of that news?
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: And then can I ask your favorite songs of all time?
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: I'll jump in here.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: You know, I'd say for you, Sean, that's big news.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: I mean, you are you're a man that believes in tradition.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: You're someone that I feel like doesn't change his stripes too often and really sticks to his guns.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: And you know, for you to adapt with the times and find something from, you know, that that's from a new artist and really put it at the top of your list is monumental.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: So I'm sure the the listeners are very are gonna be very intrigued by this.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: And it's a great song.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: I I don't I don't fault you at all for it.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: I think it's a it could be an all-time classic.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's got all the notes for me.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: I love a duet.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: I love when there's more than one vocalist, I love the lyrics in the song.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: I think the messaging is cool.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: I love the pacing, it's got a ton of instruments, it's good vibes.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: It just checks all the boxes.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Mark, what's your favorite song of all time if you had to pick just one?
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go with Piano Man, Billy Joel.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: Kind of like a family song for me and mostly my in-laws.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: And anytime you put it on, any single person knows the lyrics, we'll sing along to it.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: You play it at a wedding, it it it hits every time.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna go with that one.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: You gave us a little rendition of it yourself at your wedding.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: That was phenomenal.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: You were on the harmonica.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: People thought I faked it because the you know the sound was too high.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: And I but to this day, I'll break it out.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: I'll play it for real since no one really believes me, but it was real.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: You might need to do that on the program because the DJ did really screw you with the timing of I think he turned the speaker up as you were about to do your little harmonica bit, and you couldn't hear you at all.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: It was like you were panamiming the harmonica portion.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: I thought it was a fake, and at one point we locked eyes, and I was like, oh, he's doing a good fake.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: But then you told me after it was real.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: It was unfortunate that the DJ stole your thunder.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: It was a great job by you.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: When we go, when we have our fantasy draft in September, I'll bring the harmonica.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: I'll start putting some stuff on the start breaking out some renditions for you.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: There we go.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Jeremy, I turn the question over to you.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Well, I'd at first I'd say Rain Me In.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Great song, of course, from you.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Pip, love Billy Joel as well.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Good, two good representations.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, I'll give you a third.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: I will go The Rising by Bruce Springsteen.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: The song, obviously, the album is also called The Rising, but I'll go his song The Rising by Bruce Springsteen.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: I love that song.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: So good, so powerful, lyrics, music's great, vocals are awesome.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: It's Bruce, of course.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that's my favorite song, I think.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Jerry never ceased to amaze me.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: Always, always pulling something out of a rabbit out of a hat, so to speak.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: I was not expecting that.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: I do know you're a Bruce lover.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: That's a nice little underrated pick by Bruce.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: The rising is not often listed as people's favorites when they refer to the boss.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Agreed.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: I'll also give you a little honorable mention, too.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Stacy Quinn92.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Great little tune as well.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: So wow.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Talks talk about a juxtaposition there between the boss and quid.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: That's that's good stuff, Jared.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: I do that is good stuff.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: I love Quinn92 as well.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: And I thought I didn't think you were I thought you were gonna go Stacy's mom.
- 5:39SPEAKER_02: Like that's a greatest song of all time.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, I great artist, but a bit of a reach, Jared, just like you and fantasy football.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: Just uh, you know, three chip.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's all in the eye of the beholder.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: There's no wrong answers here.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: We're not here to shame.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Stacy's mom is also a great song, too.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's definitely more classic, but I I do prefer Quinn 92 for sure on that topic.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Boys, we have to talk about the trade deadline of baseball.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: That's why Mark is here.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: He's an avid trade deadline junkie.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: He's an avid Phillies fan.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: I'm not going to let Jarren Mark run free and talk about the Phillies this whole segment.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: We're gonna have to try to rein them in a bit.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna structure it.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about the biggest story of the deadline, which of course is Tariq Scoobyl.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: The Detroit Tigers starting pitcher has moved to Los Angeles.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: He has joined the Dodgers, uh, which seemingly every star does now.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: It's a rite of passage to go play in LA.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Boys, let's start here.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: It's the biggest move from the deadline.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: It is obviously the most talked-about move as well.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: What are your thoughts on the matter?
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: I'll throw it to you, Jeremy.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: And I just want to know in the context of this season, is there anybody that can beat the Dodgers now that this move has occurred?
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Uh it's baseball.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Baseball's pretty unpredictable.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: So maybe, but this move just solidifies the Dodgers have another great player to add to their team, another ace, another guy to push down the in their pitching rotation too.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: They've obviously haven't been afraid to spend money the last few years, and they've won two championships in a row looking to three Pete.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: So uh what changes is it Dodgers get a lot better, and it you'll see and I think you'll see it as we get into the playoffs where adding a top five arm, top three arm in baseball will help you in October, even more than what this team already had beforehand, like will really help you compared to the better teams, too, that they'll face along the way in the playoffs.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: So they get better.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: I think it the lockouts gonna be inevitable at this point, but it's gonna be tough.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't know like how they fit how they figure this out because players, the only way to figure this out is if players have like a salary cap.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: And they're never gonna sign up for that because they'd rather get the most money they can and deal with this issue with baseball, with how some teams spend a lot, how the Dodgers can spend all they can and other teams don't.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: So I don't see what I don't see how this is gonna fix anything.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: I don't see how anything I don't see the players wanting a salary cap.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: So it'll be interesting uh come the offseason.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: I don't know what gives first because the players are gonna want to get as much money as they can and they don't want to give that other.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: That's the only benefit they have in the whole uh arbitration, really, in baseball.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: So we'll see.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Jared, that's uh it's really well put, and I think that a lockout is unfortunately looming.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: It you know, they're stuck between a rock and a hard place.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: I think the biggest thing is like it's a shame for a league that has actually come really far in terms of fan engagement and interest.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: Like, I think they were the MLB was way behind the NBA some years ago, and then once they started to shorten the games, I mean the home run derby's fantastic, a fantastic playoff in October, red October in Philly.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: Like, baseball's got a lot of momentum, and I I fear it's coming to a screeching halt because of what teams like the Dodgers are doing.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, they they have a billion dollars in deferred contracts every year, like to their players, basically, is a stat that I read.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: Like, that can't be the case.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: We we gotta eliminate things like that.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: I think the proposed salary cap number is definitely low.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Like, there's gotta be a middle ground somewhere, but it's gonna take time.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: Somebody's gonna have to really feel the pain before they end this lockout.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: So that's a shame.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: So we might as well soak it all in for 2026 and you know, hope that our Phillies can win a title before everything falls off a cliff.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't want to get too deep in the weeds of the doom and gloom of a potential canceled season next year due to a lockout, which does seem even more likely at this point, as you guys pointed out.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: I would like to focus kind of just on enjoying this year, and we'll deal with potential hypotheticals in the future.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: I think in terms of what I see, like you said, Jeremy, it is baseball.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Anything can happen.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: It just feels like uh the Dodgers have kind of foolproofed themselves in certain aspects of their team building.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Like their starting rotation is so deep.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: There's just five or six guys in their rotation that are bona fide stars.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: And in the playoffs, when you're only going to need three or four of them to be at their best, it seems like they're going to be able to get that figured out and put together.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: But by no means are they unbeatable.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: They were a couple plays away last year from not winning the World Series against the Blue Jays.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: And I think we could see a similar thing happen this year.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: It's just going to take a monumental effort from another contender in the National League or someone to emerge in the American League to really be able to beat them over the course of a series.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: And the Scoobyl move just kind of enhances that and makes it just that much harder, would be my takeaway.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: But I don't think it's impossible.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: I want to get to some other notable moves on the deadline, but particularly teams that were aggressive and you could say won.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: If you're a fan of those teams and you support, for example, the Chicago Cubs, I think you'd be encouraged by what they did at the deadline.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: Mark, were the Cubs one of your winners from the deadline?
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: I think it seems like they pushed their chips into the center of the table.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: They were, John.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: They got they got a lot of talent.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: They didn't give up a ton of prospects for it, and they they went in.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: And I fear that, and as a Phillies fan, like I think there's clear-cut.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: You've clear-cut top three in the National League.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: Cubs are certainly four.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: So it's the National League is formidable.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: And the Cubs certainly went in.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: They made some moves on on the offensive end, defensive end, pitching, and they they decided to push their chips in.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: So I like what they did.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: There's a number of other teams I like what they did as well, giving a little bit less than you traditionally need to.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: Um, I think it was definitely a a buyer's market, I feel.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: I feel like people were flying off the boards uh for not that many prospects.
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: So yeah, they're they're certainly one of the winners, you know, along with the Dodgers who just win everything.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Who else would you lump in that winner's bucket?
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: Um, I think the Padres did a really good job.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: They got Casey Myes, right?
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: I liked, and they got Casey Myze at like the as the clock was striking midnight.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: Like it was like 5.59 p.m.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: Eastern.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: To go pick him up was great.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: I think that's that's certainly helps to put them over the edge.
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: Like, again, I'm wondering why some teams, like our beloved Phillies, couldn't go get someone like Casey Myze at the the 11th hour.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: Because we needed sort of pitching.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: But props to AJ Proler and the and the Padgers for going to make that happen.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Also, the Red Sox were a team that I think were aggressive, and due to their recent form over the course of the last month, they've been the best team in baseball.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: It looked like it was going to be a lost season at one point.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: They had the worst record in Major League Baseball at one point, not too long ago.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: And then when they rattled off, I believe it was 15 in a row and now have won, I want to say, 24 of 28 or something like that.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: That that gives their owners and their management reason to go and strengthen at the deadline.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: And they get Adley Rushman from the Orioles.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: That's a name.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: Listen, I'm not a I'm not a seam head exactly.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: I care about the Phillies.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: I know some guys in and around the league.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: Adley Rushman's the guy that moves the needle a little bit for me.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: That feels like a big name.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: Is he still a big name player?
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: Is that a good get for the Red Sox?
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Because I don't know if the listeners know, but I do we talked about this, Mark.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: We do have a soft spot for Boston in our hearts.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: We prefer them to the Yankees.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: I prefer the Cubs as a nice team to root for on the side.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: Some traditional cities, some traditional ballparks.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: I I care about those two groups.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think they gave up a lot for him.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: Um it seems like they gave up a huge pitching prospect as well as like four other prospects.
- 13:23SPEAKER_02: So it's a big cost.
- 13:25SPEAKER_02: But I did hear um, I think Craig Bresl, there, president of ASB operation, said that like they wanted to make a move, but they didn't want to reshuffle their team entirely.
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: They have some fantastic mojo going on right now.
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: So why, you know, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: But also wanted to tinker to the point where they could um you know help put them over the edge in October.
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: So I think they did just that in getting Atley Rushman.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: You know, it'll be interesting because I guess they they still have Contreras, right?
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: And is he gonna go is he gonna go DH?
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: Add him to catch.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: You know, that'll be interesting.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: Had had Contreras not been DHing, I assumed he was just a DH.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: I I didn't know, honestly, if he was a DH or a catcher at this point in his career because he he is older.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: But yeah, that's I mean, I guess you can never have too many cooks.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: It seemed like they needed to strengthen or thought they needed to strengthen.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: I think they did move him to first, actually.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: That's a good point.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it seems like they got they got better at the deadline, and that's all you could ask for.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: The team we're going to spend some time breaking down, and Jeremy, I'll throw it to you first on this one, is the Phillies.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: They go out and they get Luis Arrayes from the Giants.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: He in the past has won the batting title.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: He gets on base a ton.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: It is the best way to sum him up as a ball player.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: Now, that's the biggest move of note that the Phillies did.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: They also tried to strengthen the bullpen a little bit.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: I I think that's good stuff.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: Those are steps in the right direction, but it does stink, like Mark mentioned, not getting a guy like a Casey Myes, a starting pitcher that you can count on in the playoffs.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: Jared, what were your thoughts on the Phillies deadline?
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: Um I didn't love it ultimately.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: I think a lot of people are a little too hard overall.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: One of the things that this team needed was hitting.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: The reason why we've lost, the Phillies have lost in the playoffs every year.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: They've been in it for the last four years is because they don't hit ultimately.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: They're up 2-1 against the Astros in the World Series.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: They then lose their next two of three in Philadelphia, and then they lose three in a row, of course, after the game in Houston because they didn't hit all those games.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: They need pitching.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: Don't go.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: I I won an I want another starting arm.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: Mice would have been fine.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: He's been injured a lot his career in a little inconsistent early on, but this year he's been absolutely very, very good.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: I would have loved a starting pitcher.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: This team needs to hit though.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: And bringing in someone like Arias, who doesn't have much power, would have been nice.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Maybe it maybe it'll be different hitting insistance bank park over uh compared to in San Francisco.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: But this team needs some power besides Harper, besides Schwarber.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: They don't have that much.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: But they also need someone to get hits and a player to get hits in front of Schwarber, Harper, maybe even Turner.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: Get guys on base so they can hit them in.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: Minerais is the best hitting for average player in Major League Baseball right now.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: He also hits lefties really well.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: He's banging 3-13, I think, against lefties this season, which is great.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Uh he's a decent fielder, not better than Stot at second, but he's still decent.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: They need hitting.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: They probably need another bat, too, if we're being honest, but here we are.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: They got a good few relief arms.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: Again, I don't love the the trade deadline.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: There's only a number a certain amount of moves you can make.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: I would have loved to have traded Bohm.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: Nobody wants him.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: I get it.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: He's also on his last year of his deal, too, so it really doesn't make sense for anyone to take him on for a month, month, two months.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, I don't know.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: They they definitely could have done better, but let's see what a rise can do leading off.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Hopefully that helps.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: And then this this team just needs to hit overall.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: And uh if they hit in in October in the playoffs, they will win.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: Even if they don't pitch that well and they still hit, they will win.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: This team just needs to hit, I guess.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: But again, would have loved a starting arm.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Jarrett.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm with you on that.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: I think that Arise is a great pickup.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be fun to have someone that we know can get on base and is gonna hit for well over 300.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: Him and Trey Turner have won like six batting titles over the last like five years or so in in different leagues, albeit.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: I just I can't I can't.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: I I fear miss if I said like there wasn't something more that I felt like we could have done.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: Having to shift three players out of their position is just it's really tough for me.
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: And then also going out and proclaiming that our biggest need is pitching, and then not going out and getting started pitching is also a big miss for me as well.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: There were a couple of tweaks and just seeing some of these guys like Joe Adele from the Angels went one for one.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: Like the one prospect was traded for him.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: And I granted I'm a hand up, I don't know how good that prospect is, but just thinking about like who else we could have given up to maybe put us over the edge.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: And there were just a couple of extra tweaks I feel like we could have could have made, and it felt like you know, we were hot early, made two moves by 10 a.m.
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: Eastern.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: I'm thinking Dave's gonna go do it, he's going all in, and then it feels like he just kind of chilled after that.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: I'm not really sure why.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: And again, better than nothing.
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: And I'm hoping that that the guys that we have here start to step up, and some of the acquisitions like Derek Hill, your boy, hit a grand slam last night, Dela Cruz, like these guys gotta behave as deadline acquisitions, and hopefully they do.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think the point that you brought up, Mark, that is interesting to me, is the fact that we are going to be reshuffling the lineup, so to speak, because of the Aries arrival.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: We are now going to see Bohm playing first base, stop playing third, and Bryce Harper moving to the outfield.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: It does feel like ideally a move at the deadline doesn't come with four of your main guys playing different positions or playing new positions because Arrias will be a new player on the team as well.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: Ideally, that's not what you get when you make a move like that, but the trade-off of having a guy leading off at the top of the order that does reliably get on base for guys like Schwarburn Harper, that that's a fair trade in my opinion.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm happy I would sign up for any potential drawbacks on the defensive end to get a guy like that in the lineup.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: The thing that's interesting to me though, and if we just zoom out, not just to Phillies, but if we just talk about a team that behaves like the Phillies did in a climate like this, where you do have a team that like the big bad Dodgers in the National League, it seems like it's not a time for half measures.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: It's a time for either going all in or not trading any of your prospects.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: And it feels to me that the Phillies ultimately operated in half measures.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: As you say, we didn't go get that starting pitcher, and I feel like that's a real, real problem.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: I don't know how big of a problem it'll be in the playoffs, but it it's been such a big problem in the regular season, I can't see it being avoided for a postseason run.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: So I just wanted to think, I wanted to ask you, I guess.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: Do you agree that a team in a f in a position like the Phillies, they should either go all in or kind of just refrain from making any deals in general and not give away some prospects and kind of put your foot halfway in the water?
- 20:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 100%.
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: I wish we sold at this point.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: Like go all in or go all out.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: Or go all out.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: Because to me, it's like I'm I'm kind of tired of like the oh, for example, we brought Andrew Painter back and he had a good start.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: So that's like an acquisition.
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: You know, we signed this guy as a free agent and promoted him from AAA.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: We got Tommy Fan sitting in triple A.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: Is he gonna be our next acquisition?
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: Like, go in and get guys that are on teams for a reason and that are valued by their teams, not ones that are DFA'd, and those are your acquisitions.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: Like, go give up prospects.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: And traditionally the Phillies have done like every prospect we've given up honestly hasn't turned out to be much.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: Um, you go back to like the Kyle Drabex of the world and Sixto Sanchez, like these guys, you know, they're you never know.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: We got JT Romito for Sixto Sanchez, so it's like go all in.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: Who knows what the prospects are going to be like?
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm with you.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: I I completely agree that it's easy to say too, as we sit here as fans wanting the team to push as hard as possible to be successful.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: I know there's real life things that get in the way of making decisions like that, but it's just something where when you zoom out and look at the rest of the National League and how some of those teams strengthened and what the Phillies are currently showing us on the field each and every day, it's a situation where I just feel like what we did isn't ultimately enough.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: And then that leads me to the question, well, then why do it in the first place?
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: So that's kind of where I sit after the deadline.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: I don't disagree with you guys.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: The only issue I see with the Phillies is, and this is their pro this is our problem.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: This is their problem too.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Uh we don't have the depth in the bullpen to uh give away if if we give away top tier guys.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: That decimates our prospects as a whole.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: I assume Cleveland traded for Joe Adele, Mark, correct?
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: I assume that they gave up a top 100 prospect for him.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: I might be wrong.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: I could be wrong, but I just, it just like the only guy who like teams would want from our system, like really want would be Gage Wood.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: I don't know if I'd want to get get rid of him for like like I just I don't see like if you had a starting pitcher, good.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: I don't see them winning the World Series even with that.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: So I don't know.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: It's a tough situation.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: I get what you guys are saying.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: Um, you're not wrong either with that thought process.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: It's just like this team needs a lot.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: They need it, they really need a few more arms, they need another bat, as is maybe a third bat on top of a Ryas and an additional bat after him.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: I'm talking even two bats after Ryas, I guess, but I don't know.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: It's a tough situation.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: Their farm system isn't that good, and it really hurts us.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: It's served this team for several years now.
- 22:58SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna I'm gonna really get something going here.
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: He was traded for Jacob Kozar.
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: Jacob Kozart was the 17th ranked player in the Guardian system, and he went one for one.
- 23:12unknown: Yeah.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: That's my point.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: Like, that was an impact bat, a righty bat.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: We need a righty bat.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: We're loaded with lefties.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: So when we go up against a left-handed pitcher in the playoffs, like it's gonna be lefty on lefty, and we're gonna have guys that are swinging out of their shoes trying to you know chase breaking balls.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: Like, it's just like you just sit there as a fan, like, why not more?
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: Like, could we have done more?
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: What could like and I'm not the GM of the Phillies for a reason.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: Obviously, I'm a fan.
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: You know, we're we're all podcasting about this.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: We're not in the you know, in the ivory tower, but it just it seems like we could have done more.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and this doesn't, like I said, it doesn't just pertain to the Phillies either.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: I'm kind of because we have people that aren't fans of the Phillies that listen to the show.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: I feel like if you're in the same boat where you feel like your roster currently is not good enough, and after the deadline, you still feel like your roster currently is not good enough to win a World Series as it's constructed, then I feel like the trade deadline was a failure if you additionally lost prospects for the future in the process of that.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: So it's fine to me, Jeremy, that you think that we were a couple arms short in the bullpen.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: I don't think this is a World Series caliber team.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: My point then would have been why go and give up our number three prospect for Arries?
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: What does that do for the Phillies?
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: Is that a long is Arries around for the next couple of years?
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: We just talked about how there might not be a season next year.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: So, you know, it's not really a long-term move in that aspect either.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: I just feel like we ultimately stopped short of getting a World Series caliber team and we also didn't make ourselves better in years to come.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: And that to me feels like a bit of a waste.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: That's where I sit.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know anything about these prospects flying around.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: We can look up rankings and do that sort of mumbo jumbo.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: The truth of the matter is nobody really knows.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: We let the let the experts and the people making the trades be the ones who make those decisions and see how things net out.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: But ultimately, I just feel like I don't like half measures, and I feel like the Phillies took some half measures this year.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: I'm with you.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: I completely agree.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: It's just like even if you trade for a starting pitcher, like this team isn't going to win the World Series this year.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: And then I would sit here, yeah.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: And that's the other difficult part, too, is if the Phillies did nothing at the deadline, I'd be the first one sitting here being like, well, why didn't they do anything?
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: So that's what feels like.
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: It feels like nothing, though.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: It feels like nothing.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, I and I know I'm discounting Arias, he's awesome, but it's closer to nothing than it is uh a franchise altering move.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: So I think that's where we net out.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: That's what fans do.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Hey, we're tortured fans, and this is shaping up to be yet another year of torture.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: So why don't we transition to a sport that hasn't started to torture us yet?
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: It's a sport we're excited about.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: There's we're starting to get some of those cooler nights.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: I I know it's few and far between.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: We go right back up to 95 the day after I get the taste of fall, but we're starting to get closer to football, boys.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: And I think we should lead off the discussion with a little piece of content that the Athletic put out.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: It is their tiered quarterback list, which is voted on by league executives and coaches, where they basically rank quarterbacks into four tiers.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: And I think the results of this are pretty interesting.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: I I don't know necessarily that I agree with all of them.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: So, boys, I'll let you, Jeremy, lead us off here.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: What was your number one takeaway after seeing this athletic quarterback list?
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: There are only four tiers on this list, and there should probably be like 10 to 12.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: I think the first the first thing that I thought about was like after the fifth quarterback, major drop-off after Lamar.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: It's just what it is.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: You know, there's there's there's a lot of there's different hierarchies with these quarterbacks.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: Quickly, can I point out that the top four Lamar wasn't in that first tier, correct?
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: He was in the second tier.
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he was tier tier.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so the first tier was Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, and Matthew Stafford.
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: And then after that is where they deemed it to go to tier two.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: Now, Jeremy, I could see your point in lumping Lamar in with that previous group, but I think that also speaks to your other point.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: I feel like we might be trying to fit some square pegs and around holes by trying to group all of these guys in only four tiers.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: It seems like there's some more wiggle room in there.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: I mean that I it's just tough because I look at someone like maybe it's just me, but I'm I'm applying age here.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: I'd rather have Burrow and Lamar over Stafford going to this season, assuming that my team around him is also pretty good.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Like, if it's a quarterback rank, I it's tough to see what they're ranking.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: Like, obviously, Stafford was MVP last year.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: It was great and is still great at what 39 years old.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: But like, I don't know.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: When when healthy, when at their best, I think Burrow and Lamar clear Stafford, but I don't even care.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: Like, that's not a big deal.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: It's like Herbert at six.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: That's crazy.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: Really good quarterback, really nice quarterback, too.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: He's not the sixth best quarterback.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: He's done nothing in the playoffs.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: He's been awful in the playoffs when he's lost games.
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: They haven't protected him, not his fault.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: They've tried to haven't done a good job.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: Injuries, too.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: Justin Herbert's not the sixth best quarterback in the NFL.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: That's the biggest thing that stood out to me, besides the whole tier thing.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: I think too, tier one, Joe Burrow.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: I like Joe Burrow a lot.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: I think he's extremely talented.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: This is these are his season by season records as a pro.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: Two and seven and one, ten and six, twelve and four, super bowl appearance.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: I think in 2021.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: Five and five, nine and eight, five and three.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: And he's the fourth best quarterback in in tier one.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think the the records thing is a tough.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: It's not like for like yeah, Jerry, you use that, but then you kind of beat Justin Herbert with the same stick for his playoff record, where he also lost two all-pro tackles last season and got that team to the playoffs.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: So there is a little bit of give and take with that.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: I would also disagree pretty vehemently with your point that for this season I would rather have Lamar Jackson over Matthew Stafford.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: I've seen nothing.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: I would definitely rather Matthew Stafford.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: I mean, he I Stafford is just a big game player.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: He's been his whole career, also just got it done as an MVP.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: I think we've seen good playoff performances from Stafford, won a Super Bowl, whereas we haven't seen that yet from Lamar.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: Now, if you're projecting next five years, obviously that conversation changes.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: But I do think it's it gets tricky when we start evaluating a quarterback solely based on their team's record.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: But Mark, I think I pick up what you're putting down in terms of Joe Burrow.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: He kind of just has to go and be out there and doing it.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: Because when he's doing it, he's great.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: It's just we don't see it enough.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: It's been years, I feel like, since we've seen like healthy Joe Burrow for a whole season dominating.
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: It's been like three years.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then the year that he had that was a good year a couple years ago.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: He was great, but the team started off so horribly that they ultimately missed the playoffs even in it.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: So I think that's tough.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: Jared, did you have anything else as you work your way down the list?
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: Is there anybody else?
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: Because there's a couple others as we make our way through that I had some I had some raised eyebrows over.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know you're this you feel the same way as me, Sean.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: I'm a big fan of Caleb Williams.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: I think he's really talented.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: His ability to run to and use his feet is just such a threat, along with his throwing, of course.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: Goff, Jared Goff, Jordan Love, Brock Purdy, maybe even Dak.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Dak was very good last year, but those guys should not be ahead of Caleb Williams.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: Caleb Williams is just better.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: I get we've only seen a year of Caleb Williams.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: If that's going into it, fine.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: Caleb Williams is a better quarterback than those three.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: Maybe even Dak, too.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: I'll give Dak respect because he's done it for a while.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: And when he's when he's healthy, every other year he's sort of been like either great or like mediocre, but the greats are very good for Dak, so we'll give him that.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: But I'd have Caleb Williams at the top ten and like probably close to like seven.
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: Here we go.
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: Jeremy's trying to earn his way back into the host.
- 31:07SPEAKER_02: Good graces for the Caleb Williams take.
- 31:09SPEAKER_02: The least surprising thing I've seen today.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: Jeremy, great job by you if that's what you're trying to do.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: If you were trying to butter me up, nothing brings a smile to my face like talking Caleb.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: Well, it's not even just that.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: Like, I like Goff has done a very good job from the switch from the Rams to the Lions, but he's not that special.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: Like his his offense is so tailored to him with the talent around him.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Caleb has some talent around him too, but he's just younger.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: He's done it quicker at this point.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: I'd rather have.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: If you're asking me who would I rather have for like the season ahead, I completely agree with you, Jared.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: Much rather Caleb Williams than Jared Goff, Brock Purdy, and Jordan Love.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: And I think it's not crazy to rank him over those guys based on just what we saw last year, but I think the poll is predictive in the sense it's it's what you guys would want for this season.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: I'm right there with you.
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: Jared Goff is a great quarterback if the play goes 100% according to plan.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: If there's protection and he can get through his reads and sit in his clean pocket and make a throw, he's great.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: He's a really good quarterback.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: The problem with Jared is when plays don't go according to plan 100%, he has no improv improvisation.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: Whereas Caleb Williams, he thrives in plays going off the rails.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: He, as we saw last year in the playoffs and in big moments, it's almost welcomed for Caleb so that he can get out of the pocket and make plays with his feet, make plays with that arm.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: So I do agree 100% with you there.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: Dak, that's an interesting one.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: It could go back and forth.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: Dak is hit or miss some seasons.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: It is kind of like you said, one season world beater, top five quarterback, next season.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: You're looking and seeing if that's the same guy.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: The other one that we have to talk about, and before Mark, I want to get your thoughts too.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: But Jalen Hurts, we still haven't brought his name up yet.
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: He's way down on this list.
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: Too well.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: 17th for Jalen Hurts.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: I have to ask the question what are what are we doing here with Jalen Hurts?
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: Should not be 17th.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: It's absolutely insane.
- 33:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's below Trevor Lawrence, he's two above your boy, Aaron Rodgers.
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: I don't understand.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: And I hope Jalen uses this as fuel.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: I truly do.
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: And somebody should have this plastered up on his locker every day he walks into the facility.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: It's it's unbelievable.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's, you know, I think as a traditional quarterback, like, yeah, I don't I don't think Jalen's gonna be your tier one or or you know, he's better than Lamar Jackson.
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: But like I the Jalen Hurts narrative is egregious in the media these days.
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: And I just I don't understand it.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: It's weird.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: And I I I'm gonna toss it to our resident Eagles fan, but Jalen Hurts hater, Jeremy Good.
- 33:37SPEAKER_01: He's not an appreciator of Jalen Hurts.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: But it is weird, Mark.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: We see this discourse around Hurts.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: The guy wins ball games, he's on good teams basically year after year, and year after year he continues to get disrespected.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: But the weird thing is, it's not like this blatant disrespect where it's unanimous that people feel he's being disrespected.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: There are some guys who really study tape and watch ball that think Jalen Hurts isn't that good, and then there are some other guys that are around him that swear by him.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: So he's really an enigma, and I I can't quite put my finger on it.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: Jeremy, what are your thoughts on the Jalen Hurts experience?
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: One of the weirdest, not weirdest, but one of the things that like when you hear the great quarterbacks talk, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, they've raved about Jalen Hurts.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: And then you hear the pundits who weren't great quarterbacks like Chris Sims, Dan Orlovsky, although Orlovsky might be turning because he likes the Eagles now for their for different foundations and whatnot.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: But um, you hear those quarterbacks and they and they like they don't like Hurts.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: And it part of me thinks that's a jealousy thing where they weren't as good.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: They didn't have the talent maybe Jalen Hurts did, and they didn't perform like he did.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: 17 is too low.
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: That's insane.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: He's won a Super Bowl, he's played pretty good football his entire career.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: To have someone like Jaden Daniels at 13, who's had who had a very great rookie year, then was injured his sophomore year, and it's easy to see why he gets injured the way he plays.
- 35:01SPEAKER_00: To have him four slots ahead of him, that's crazy.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: Jalen Hurts, I'd put around my top 10, maybe around 11-ish.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: 17 is insane.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: I don't get it.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: I don't get putting someone like Jordan Love over.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: Again, it comes down to Jordan Love.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: I just, he's a turnover machine.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: He's not better than Jalen.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: I'd have Jalen, I'd have to look over the list, but I'd probably put him around the 11 mark, you know, realistically.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he went, it's it's just it's the disrespect, it's crazy.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: Especially having Jalen Hurst, no offense, Sean, but then having someone like Rogers at 19 and Hurts at 17, something's not right there, obviously.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: And in, you know, this isn't Rogers of yesteryear when he was amazing.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: Um, again, there needs like the tears are just there needs to be more tiers, and Hertz following the 17 is just is way too low.
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: Pretty crazy.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: As someone who I appreciate your you coming around, Jared, someone who previously had Tanner McKee over Jalen Hurts in his rankings.
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: You know, it's good to hear that you've actually uh you know developed a good opinion on this now.
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: I don't know where you'd have Tanner McKee in these rankings, but I'm happy to think Jalen should be higher than 17.
- 36:13unknown: Yeah.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: That was Eagles fans at their best last year in the preseason trying to sell Tanner McKee for first round picks because their shit doesn't stink.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: That was that was awesome.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: That would I'm expect I'm excited to see who we who were trying to ground this preseason, saying they're the best things to do.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: Andy Dalton's over the weekend, Andy Dalton was slinging with the twos, so that could be interesting.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: Uh my biggest issue or concern with Hertz throughout his career is just the consistency, consistency thing year in, year out.
- 36:42SPEAKER_00: But when he's on, he's very good, and he's a very smart uh quarterback.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: Like in a I'll say this in a good way.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: When he's at his best, he is a great game manager and he won a Super Bowl doing that the way he did, and that counts for a lot.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: And in the Super Bowl game itself, he was brilliant against the Chiefs in 50 in Super Bowl 59, controlled the game with every part of his, you know, his feet, his arm.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: It was brilliant.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: So yeah, he's uh when he's on, he's definitely a top 10 quarterback.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: It's just a consistency thing, but putting him at 17 is crazy.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna move us along to our next segment, which does tie into this.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: It's we're going to go through some storylines that we are monitoring ahead of the season, just kind of things that we're interested in or have been thinking about that we want to see play out this season.
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: I think Jalen Hurts and the Eagles is an interesting one.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: I think there's gonna be a microscope on them with the new offensive coordinator, Sean Mannion, with A.J.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: Brown's departure after kicking up quite a shitstorm on his way out.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: I think the Eagles offensively are going to be an interesting unit to watch.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: I think we know what to expect from their defense.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: It should be great.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: But I think that's an interesting one.
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: Another offense that I'm keeping my eyes on, and I kind of just want to see signs of life from, is the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: Patrick Mahomes was one of those names in the top four of this poll that the Athletic did.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: And I think we would all agree that Mahomes belongs in that top spot.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: He has already put together a historic career.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: The interesting thing is, though, the last two seasons, the Chiefs' offense has been dire.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: It's been bad to watch, it's been bad on paper, it's been bad on film.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: I'm interested in seeing can they improve or can they figure anything different out?
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: They've added Kenneth Walker, they've strengthened apparently the offensive line.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: Do you think we see an improvement from the Chiefs on the offensive side of the ball, or is this more of the same?
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: I think it's gonna be more of the same.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: I think these guys are getting older.
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: Mahomes is he's coming off like his, he doesn't look good on film right now with his knee.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: He looks like he's kind of favoring it.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: Um I mean, you know, I had him on my team last year, and maybe he proves me wrong.
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: I think Kenneth Walker, I think it really just depends on the scheme.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: I think he could be a good fit there too.
- 38:50SPEAKER_02: Russi Rice has to stay out of trouble, and Travis Kelsey is getting older.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: Like, there's a lot of things that have to go, everything's got to go well in my mind, for them to be the elite offense that they they once were.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: And I just don't know if that's you know, you're you're waiting for you know, fire to strike, and I just I don't know if it will.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: Mahomes has always been great, but it really I mean, Kelsey having the two best to do it really at their position, more or less, Kelsey a tight end, Tyreek Hill at receiver, albeit only a smaller uh or shorter career for Tyreek Hill being that great.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: But for the way he spread the field, Tyree Kill was unbelievably elite.
- 39:27SPEAKER_00: And those two really just helped, like, took care of a lot, won a few Super Bowls, just having those two as options to throw the ball to to space out the field, and it works out well.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: You now have Rashid, you now have Rasheed Rice, you have uh Xavier Worthy.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: Nice receivers, don't get me wrong.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: They're just not those, they're not Kelsey or uh Hill down the field.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: We'll see if he can develop them.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: Mahomes still has a talent.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: I I agree with you, uh, Mark, as well.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: Injury to Mahomes, that's concerning.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: It's a quick turnaround, too, since he injured it like second to last week of the season.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: I think they could have success in that offense.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: I don't think it'll ever look like what it did five five years ago when they were at the height of everything.
- 40:10SPEAKER_00: That was just such a high level.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: And I think uh I think Mahomes really benefited from the talent around him, and it's gonna be tougher for him to replicate that now as he's older a little bit and more injured and with lesser talent around him.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: So they could, I still think they could be good.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: Good offense, better than the last few years, but I don't think they'll ever get to the level that we thought of or saw years ago when they were at the height of the NFL.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: It's interesting because you you would trust a guy like Andy Reid, one of the best coaches in NFL history.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: You would trust his offensive acumen to be able to figure things out, but I kind of have the same vibe you guys are getting where it just feels a bit stale in that offense.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: We're not exactly reintroducing new, exciting pieces outside of Kenneth Walker.
- 40:53SPEAKER_01: It's a lot of the same players, the same guys that we've seen the last two seasons.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: And now it's just another year-oldie Travis Kelsey and uh Patrick Mahomes coming off a torn ACL.
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: So definitely not super optimistic, but I do think it's intriguing to see what we get from the Chiefs because you would expect Travis Kelsey's thinking at the very least that in his final season he wants to go out on top.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: I'm just not so sure that that's what their expectations should be.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: Another quarterback-centric topic that I have to bring up, guys, I have to I have to in the trust tree tell you that I was once again tricked.
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: I was tricked by Aaron Rodgers.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: He, over the course of the offseason, he had posted a photo with all the Steelers, wide receivers, and tight ends doing the workout.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: We always see that.
- 41:36SPEAKER_01: It's nice to see that the guys trust their quarterback, they go travels to some remote warm location, they run routes against air, they get the vibes right, they work on some timing, but really it's a camaraderie trip.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: I saw Aaron Rodgers post that.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: I was like, okay, that's good.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: Then I see Aaron Rodgers post on his Instagram.
- 41:54SPEAKER_01: He finally reconciled his relationship with his family.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: He's posting pictures with his mom and dad, his brothers.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: He, in the public eye, has been known to not get along with his family very well.
- 42:07SPEAKER_01: We've all known Aaron Rodgers can be a bit prickly, he could be sort of a dick.
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: But I see these posts, he's with little kids in the picture, Uncle Aaron.
- 42:15SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh man.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: This guy, you know what?
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: He's it's his last ride and he's getting all of his ducks in a row.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: He's making, he's making the revenge recovery tour, he's putting in the work.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: And then what do I see but a McAfee clip from yesterday where they're at Steelers training camp and Aaron Rodgers is basically pounding his chest out saying who was right about COVID?
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: He's still talking about Dr.
- 42:41SPEAKER_01: Fauci.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: He's demanding apologies.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: He's asking why he got blacklisted from the NFL when he was right all along.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: He's taking victory laps that nobody asked for.
- 42:51SPEAKER_01: And it just reminded me quickly, it's still the same old Aaron Rodgers we're dealing with.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: This is not a changed man.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: The brief, brief bit of optimism that I had about the Steelers season has entirely dissipated, and I now no longer just want this guy to be my quarterback.
- 43:08SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna um I'm gonna defer to Jared.
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna plead the fifth on this one.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: Are you a Rodgers guy?
- 43:15SPEAKER_02: No, I'm kidding.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: I was I you know, you know, like is that whole fiasco that he did on the uh Oh, you got me at the cause he said Fauci did that, yeah.
- 43:25SPEAKER_02: No, I mean it was definitely unhinged.
- 43:27SPEAKER_02: But that what else can you expect on you know his segment on that show?
- 43:30SPEAKER_02: It's always it's always been something else, even back to the COVID days and when he was immunized but didn't get a vaccine.
- 43:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, he certainly has always been a bit of a wild card and kind of flies by the seat of his pants.
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: And hopefully for your Steelers, Sean, he he can show up and play this year, because otherwise I think the fan sentiment might turn pretty quickly.
- 43:51SPEAKER_01: No, i listen here.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: The fans are we've turned.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: We we are we are in purgatory.
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: So I I don't I don't have any expectations.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: For this season, other than more of the same, and it's a pretty unlikable bunch led by Aaron Rodgers.
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: So not exactly excited.
- 44:06SPEAKER_01: I like I said, I had talked myself into it.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: I was like, you know what?
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: He's 42 now.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: He's finally seeing life the way it intends to be.
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: And then I turned my head, and two seconds later, he's back talking about COVID and Fauci again.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: Jeremy, what are your thoughts on the Steelers?
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm I'm glad this isn't my quarterback issue.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: This is what you're gonna get with Aaron Rodgers at this point.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: Statistically, last year, not awful, but the offense also wasn't like great with the Steelers.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: They still, you know, did pretty well.
- 44:37SPEAKER_00: But like I get why the Steelers didn't go in draft a quarterback this year besides Mendoza.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: I couldn't really get behind anybody.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: They also weren't in position.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: We did draft Drew Aller, so we did.
- 44:49SPEAKER_00: I mean someone I mean someone earlier on, like some like a first round quarterback talent.
- 44:53SPEAKER_02: Did you guys see Drew Aller completely miss the net on the quarterback accuracy drill?
- 44:59SPEAKER_02: Like I did, you know, with three boxes.
- 45:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, over the net.
- 45:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I talked about it on here when he was drafted.
- 45:06SPEAKER_01: It was another tough day for me.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: I'm just tossing my hand up saying I I pretended not to say anything about him when he was at Penn State, but I hate his guts.
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: I hate our quarterback room.
- 45:14SPEAKER_01: Is there anything is there anything else?
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: Will Howard hasn't done anything to me yet, but he will show you.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: I think.
- 45:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: It's weird, like the Steelers, you can speak better to me than this, Sean, but like they held on to Rothesburg or too long, and then they bring in Kenny.
- 45:31SPEAKER_00: Like it's just been like bad quarterbacking and bad like management with the quarterback position for the last six years, it feels like, with Kenny Pickett.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: Now this situation with Rogers.
- 45:44SPEAKER_00: So the good thing is, next year I think it's different where they can really attack the position.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: But when you bring him back in the way you did, how he kind of held out, what maybe till May, it not him necessarily holding out, but the team holding out to to commit to like around May, maybe, maybe a little earlier.
- 46:01SPEAKER_00: But yeah, it is what it is with the Steelers.
- 46:04SPEAKER_00: They kind of made their bed with this one.
- 46:06SPEAKER_00: Good thing is they can move off next year, and I think that they can really make some noise too going forward as well.
- 46:12SPEAKER_00: But uh yeah, the last hurrah with Rogers.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm not not looking forward to it.
- 46:17SPEAKER_01: We had the oldest defense in the NFL last year and the highest paid, and it's not like it got drastically younger this season.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: So we really are doing one final ride with Aaron.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: That's the that's the whole tagline around the season for Pittsburgh.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: And boy oh boy, is that a ride I don't want any part of.
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: Now, can they sucker me in?
- 46:36SPEAKER_01: And will I will I be here in October being just like I was last year, putting on my clown makeup?
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: Of course, that's in the cards.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: But at this moment in time, at uh as recording here in August, I am out on what's about to happen.
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: Mark, there's a couple other bits and bobs that have happened in the NFL the last couple days.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: We've got some running backs holding out to be paid, and one that just got paid.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: I think that's another storyline that we need to talk about.
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: Bijan Robinson.
- 47:04SPEAKER_01: What are your thoughts on Bijan and the Falcons in general?
- 47:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, good for Bijan, I think.
- 47:08SPEAKER_02: You'd always like to see these running backs, it's tough, and and I appreciate them being able to get the bag whenever they can.
- 47:14SPEAKER_02: You know, it's a shame that's the thing.
- 47:18SPEAKER_02: He is, yeah.
- 47:21SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure what's guaranteed and whatnot, but you know, good for him.
- 47:24SPEAKER_02: And Falcons will be interesting.
- 47:26SPEAKER_02: I guess I still I don't know what they're gonna do a quarterback between Pennyx and to uh having two left-handed quarterbacks in your quarterback room is just a strange decision.
- 47:34SPEAKER_02: But other than that, they got some talent between Drake London, it's all defense.
- 47:37SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 47:38SPEAKER_02: But I will say I do have one one thing to raise as well.
- 47:41SPEAKER_02: Can we discuss what a hold in is?
- 47:44SPEAKER_02: Because to me, it just seems like you're still practicing.
- 47:46SPEAKER_02: And so you are you really holding out, or are you just like saying you're angry?
- 47:50SPEAKER_02: And then just doing everything you would normally.
- 47:52SPEAKER_02: I gotta understand the concept.
- 47:53SPEAKER_01: That's the new thing, right?
- 47:55SPEAKER_01: We've seen it very recent years.
- 47:57SPEAKER_01: Used to traditionally always be somebody who wants a new contract, they hold out, they don't come to the team facility, they don't report to practice, they accumulate fines, which they're fine with accumulating because they know they'll be eventually forgiven when they sign that new contract.
- 48:11SPEAKER_01: Now we are seeing a lot of hold-ins.
- 48:14SPEAKER_01: It's guys who show up, they seemingly do everything but practice so that they don't fall a step behind.
- 48:19SPEAKER_01: I kind of like it.
- 48:20SPEAKER_01: I respect it.
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: It's like, hey, I'm here, but I'm unhappy.
- 48:23SPEAKER_01: It's it's very passive aggressive, but it's also it seems to be getting the job done because Jameer Gibbs is in the middle of a hold in right now.
- 48:30SPEAKER_00: The problem with the hold, the holdout is these players don't want to lose game checks or money along the way.
- 48:37SPEAKER_00: Those those payments were quite big, so now they have to do something else.
- 48:40SPEAKER_00: I don't think it really works out for the players.
- 48:42SPEAKER_00: They just don't have like much leverage in these situations ultimately.
- 48:46SPEAKER_00: But uh yeah, going back to Atlanta, isn't Penix and Tua both hurt right now?
- 48:51SPEAKER_00: Maybe not seriously, but like they all died.
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's Tua exists in a perennial state of injured.
- 48:58SPEAKER_01: It's just how bad.
- 48:59SPEAKER_01: And Penix, yeah, Penix is hurt.
- 49:02SPEAKER_01: So yeah, that's it.
- 49:03SPEAKER_01: That's quite possibly the best situation ever of if you have two quarterbacks, you have none.
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: The two lefties that boy, do they leave a lot to be desired, the both of them.
- 49:13SPEAKER_01: I I'll say I'll give Penix another year, maybe, to to officially have me be out on him, but it wasn't encouraging what I saw in season one.
- 49:22SPEAKER_01: I've never been a Tua guy.
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: I I think he stinks.
- 49:26SPEAKER_01: And I I'm very worried about the Falcons and our guy Michael Collins, who's a resident Falcon.
- 49:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's a Bichon guy, he's a Kyle Pitts guy.
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: I he every year talks himself into not only the Falcons win total over, but them being like a kind of a sleeper playoff team.
- 49:41SPEAKER_01: The Falcons stink.
- 49:43SPEAKER_01: And the sooner that we all acknowledge that, the better.
- 49:46SPEAKER_01: I do think the biggest takeaway for me, though, is that they're at least a fun, stinky team.
- 49:51SPEAKER_01: They have fun pieces.
- 49:53SPEAKER_01: There are some teams that just stink every year and they're no fun.
- 49:56SPEAKER_01: Like their fans are miserable.
- 49:57SPEAKER_01: The Jets come to mind.
- 49:59SPEAKER_01: You know, there's not a lot of joy in ever watching a New York Jets game.
- 50:02SPEAKER_01: You'll get some joyful moments watching the Falcons.
- 50:05SPEAKER_00: They're a great, they're a great Madden team.
- 50:08SPEAKER_00: Like great, high profile offensive players.
- 50:12SPEAKER_00: I love Bichon.
- 50:12SPEAKER_00: I think he's a great player.
- 50:14SPEAKER_00: Paying a running back 25 mil without having a quarterback is just ass and I do but but but Bichon deserves to get paid, don't get me wrong, but like that is a tough situation.
- 50:22SPEAKER_00: You better win a Super Bowl if, or you better be realistic.
- 50:26SPEAKER_00: Be a realistic team to win a Super Bowl if you pay a running back like that, and they're just not there.
- 50:31SPEAKER_01: Is there anything else, boys, as we move out of the NFL?
- 50:35SPEAKER_01: I feel like we did a good job kind of updating some recent events and then also just kind of getting our feet back in the water as we get closer to the season.
- 50:44SPEAKER_02: I'm just getting fired up.
- 50:46SPEAKER_02: Count me into uh, I think we get a big NFL prediction round table with anyone who's been on this pod before and we we start spewing hot takes.
- 50:54SPEAKER_02: Like it it's it's getting me excited to really uh you know I can't wait for the Hall of Fame game.
- 50:58SPEAKER_02: I can't wait for you know, I'll I'll take any football we can get to the best time of year starting in September Sean.
- 51:03SPEAKER_02: I know we talked about that on a previous episode, so let's get going.
- 51:06SPEAKER_01: I I do agree, I can't wait for the real thing, but I I have I'm out on all the preseason stuff.
- 51:11SPEAKER_01: I used to be with you, Mark, and but like excited for the Hall of Fame game.
- 51:14SPEAKER_01: It's all a farce.
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: I don't tune in to any of it anymore.
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: I just hold out and make and it makes the real thing that much better when you don't get the half-assed preseason bullshit.
- 51:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 51:23SPEAKER_02: The preseason's gotten worse and worse and worse.
- 51:25SPEAKER_02: I just like to tune into something on my TV, and and I wanted to talk about this too, and and just see people in pads hitting each other.
- 51:32SPEAKER_02: We were at a brunch yesterday or on Sunday, and the only thing that was on, which is actually kind of entertaining, especially if you have a couple drinks or maybe take an edible, it's called Slippery Stairs on ESPN 8 The Ocho, and all these people just get greased up and they try to make it to the top of the stairs, and then they run up the stairs and then they slip and then they knock everyone else down.
- 51:51SPEAKER_02: Like that was that's what's on television now.
- 51:53SPEAKER_02: Albeit it was a bit entertaining.
- 51:55SPEAKER_02: I highly recommend you take take a look at it, but give me some football that I can watch, please.
- 52:00SPEAKER_01: That's a good point.
- 52:01SPEAKER_01: Anytime the ocho is being referenced, it's probably a sign that we desperately need football.
- 52:05SPEAKER_01: Just in general, that channel only comes out when it's really dark and trying times for all of us sports fans.
- 52:11SPEAKER_01: I will say though, that sounds way better than watching a New York Jets game.
- 52:16SPEAKER_00: It was entertaining.
- 52:17SPEAKER_01: It sounds so fun.
- 52:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 52:18SPEAKER_00: Well, that's what we're gonna watch too, all summer next year when there's no baseball because of the lockout.
- 52:23SPEAKER_00: And I can get behind that.
- 52:24SPEAKER_00: That's probably more entertaining than baseball, too.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: The Ochoes.
- 52:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the Ocho's just praying for a walkout.
- 52:31SPEAKER_01: They're they're desperate for one.
- 52:33SPEAKER_01: Uh the last thing I had in the world of football is I have an announcement.
- 52:37SPEAKER_01: I I think I might have shared this with you guys before, but I would like your reactions for the listeners.
- 52:41SPEAKER_01: I think it's an ingenious idea.
- 52:43SPEAKER_01: I think once again, I'm on the cutting edge of something here.
- 52:46SPEAKER_01: And I have, as we kind of talked about, just alluded to how I don't do the preseason anymore.
- 52:52SPEAKER_01: A couple weeks ago, I had Blum on and he was asking me what team certain players played for, and I was clueless about a few of them.
- 52:59SPEAKER_01: I basically, as as we get older, we get into our 30s, I'm starting to tap out on the everyday minutia of football.
- 53:07SPEAKER_01: And that comes with some repercussions to my fantasy football output.
- 53:12SPEAKER_01: I'm traditionally a very strong fantasy football player.
- 53:15SPEAKER_01: It helps that the company I keep is guys like you two and other guys that have joined this podcast that aren't very strong or very good fantasy players.
- 53:25SPEAKER_01: So that helps for sure.
- 53:26SPEAKER_01: But my point is since that I don't know what's going on anymore, I've lost my fastball, so to speak.
- 53:32SPEAKER_01: I have hired a head coach for my fantasy teams.
- 53:35SPEAKER_01: So I am the owner of the team, I will draft the players, but then I'm hands off.
- 53:40SPEAKER_01: All of the day-to-day decisions, the little stuff that I can't be bothered to deal with, I have hired a manager for.
- 53:48SPEAKER_01: We're it's sort of like the the league, the TV show where Ruxin hires the Oracle, the young little 12-year-old kid, to come in and run his team.
- 53:55SPEAKER_01: That's basically what I've done.
- 53:57SPEAKER_01: I've stolen that, I've made it my own idea.
- 54:00SPEAKER_01: What do you guys think?
- 54:00SPEAKER_01: I think it's a pretty good one.
- 54:02SPEAKER_01: And honestly, I'm not tied to the head coach.
- 54:04SPEAKER_01: So if they have a poor season, they can be fired and I could bring in a new one next year.
- 54:09SPEAKER_02: I I love it.
- 54:10SPEAKER_02: I think it's hilarious.
- 54:11SPEAKER_02: Now, that wouldn't be the first time that we've seen this in the league, where this is being the second kind of co-owner coach model, right?
- 54:20SPEAKER_02: So I'm curious, who are you bringing in?
- 54:24SPEAKER_01: Well, each league each league that I'm in has a different coach.
- 54:27SPEAKER_01: That will be revealed at the draft.
- 54:29SPEAKER_01: I can't have you guys tampering with my coach and putting thoughts into his head.
- 54:33SPEAKER_01: He he's strictly mine, and we're gonna keep him in isolation until the time's right to announce.
- 54:39SPEAKER_01: So I just wanted to get your thoughts on the idea.
- 54:40SPEAKER_01: I'm glad you like the idea and think it's fun.
- 54:42SPEAKER_01: I I think it's an absolute great time.
- 54:44SPEAKER_02: It's kind of inspiring me.
- 54:45SPEAKER_02: Like, how many like they can't make worse decisions than I do, so why not?
- 54:50SPEAKER_00: So if I want to make a trade with you, do I go through your coach?
- 54:55SPEAKER_01: You you can initiate discussions with my coach.
- 54:59SPEAKER_01: He runs them up the food chain.
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: I ultimately have say on the roster.
- 55:02SPEAKER_01: He does the start sit, he does the add drop on like I could give him permission to drop a guy, he has permission to scout who we're replacing him with.
- 55:09SPEAKER_01: It's listen, things still go through me, but it's a great way to, if we have a bad season, have a scapegoat.
- 55:16SPEAKER_01: It's a great way to not beat myself up over start-sit decisions every week because that drives me nuts.
- 55:22SPEAKER_01: It's a perfect little, hey, you know what?
- 55:24SPEAKER_01: If the ball's not in my court, whatever happens, happens, and we'll reassess the situation at the end of the season.
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: I hope it ends in a bonus for our coach and a championship because he will be rewarded handsomely for his efforts if that end result is what we desire.
- 55:40SPEAKER_00: What's the money breakdown if you win the championship?
- 55:44SPEAKER_01: I cover all expenses and he's tipped handsomely for his efforts.
- 55:48SPEAKER_01: It's a win-win.
- 55:49SPEAKER_01: It's a free, it's an unpaid internship at first, but boy, it's what you make of it.
- 55:54SPEAKER_01: And really, really, I think he is gonna make the most of it.
- 55:58SPEAKER_01: I have high hopes for our coach.
- 56:00SPEAKER_00: Can we get a percentage of what the cut he's getting?
- 56:03SPEAKER_01: It'll depend on performance, it'll depend on our path along the way, how much I feel like he actually did his job, how much my brilliance in the draft room went on display.
- 56:11SPEAKER_01: It there's a lot of factors, Jeremy.
- 56:13SPEAKER_01: He listened there, our contract is not your business.
- 56:15SPEAKER_01: Okay, it's been signed.
- 56:17SPEAKER_00: Last question on the contract.
- 56:18SPEAKER_00: Will it exceed 50% if you win the league?
- 56:21SPEAKER_00: No, let's not get crazy.
- 56:23SPEAKER_00: What do you mean?
- 56:25SPEAKER_01: What are you what are you crazy?
- 56:26SPEAKER_01: No, no, it's I mean, listen.
- 56:28SPEAKER_01: Everybody needs to get their foot in the door to be the coach of Death by a Thousand Tuds is a tremendous honor and a privilege, and I think we need to reshape how we're thinking about it.
- 56:37SPEAKER_00: That's funny.
- 56:38SPEAKER_01: Let's move on to the National Basketball Association, the only league that's better in the summer than it is when it's actually playing.
- 56:45SPEAKER_01: The Sixers signed LeBron a couple weeks ago.
- 56:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's taken the world by storm.
- 56:49SPEAKER_01: We're not going to react to it.
- 56:50SPEAKER_01: That's been done a million times already.
- 56:52SPEAKER_01: But boys, there's a palpable buzz in our group chat now that LeBron's joined.
- 56:56SPEAKER_01: It seems like all the college boys, the Philly guys are getting back together again.
- 57:00SPEAKER_01: We're like, hey, we're kind of, hey, it's been a while since we rode together, kind of like an old biker gang getting together for a final ride.
- 57:07SPEAKER_01: You know, we've been hurt by this unit before, but now we have LeBron, things might be different.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: I guess the way I'll frame the conversation to you is what do you think the most likely outcome is for this Philadelphia Sixers team?
- 57:20SPEAKER_01: We've seen some pundits say how they don't fit together.
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: There's only one basketball.
- 57:24SPEAKER_01: We've seen some optimistic people say it's the best starting five in the league.
- 57:28SPEAKER_01: Mark, I'm gonna start with you.
- 57:30SPEAKER_01: What is the most likely outcome for the 2026-2027 Philadelphia 76ers?
- 57:36SPEAKER_02: I got two words for you, Sean.
- 57:38SPEAKER_02: Broad streak.
- 57:39SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna double down on my take when I said if the Sixers I think they could sign LeBron James a few pods ago, and I said if they do, we're gonna win it all.
- 57:48SPEAKER_02: Broad streak.
- 57:49SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna start, I'm gonna book my spot on uh Broad and Washington now, and I'm gonna post up at the corner and we're gonna be there.
- 57:58SPEAKER_02: I think it's a fantastic team.
- 58:00SPEAKER_02: Mike Gansy builds a statue right alongside Nick Foles and Doug Peterson.
- 58:05SPEAKER_02: I'm fired up.
- 58:06SPEAKER_02: I think I think this is the year.
- 58:09SPEAKER_01: Mark, I didn't believe you when you said we would sign LeBron, and I certainly don't believe you now when you're saying we're gonna win a title, but I do completely co-sign your Mike Gancey take.
- 58:19SPEAKER_01: No matter what happens with this team, because spoiler alert, it's gonna go tits up, it's gonna go poorly.
- 58:26SPEAKER_01: I no matter what happens, Mike Gancey deserves proper recognition.
- 58:29SPEAKER_01: That guy is a hero.
- 58:30SPEAKER_01: I've heard for years about how it's impossible to get free agents to Philly, about how it's not easy to just build a team without tanking for two decades and winning four games.
- 58:40SPEAKER_01: I I've heard it all, I've heard it all.
- 58:42SPEAKER_01: And this guy comes in, he's been there for six minutes, and he's put together the best Sixers roster any of us have seen in our lives.
- 58:49SPEAKER_01: I love this man.
- 58:50SPEAKER_01: I didn't know him from a hole in the wall beforehand.
- 58:54SPEAKER_01: I absolutely adore him.
- 58:55SPEAKER_01: I'm completely cool with sanctioning a statue, no matter what happens, because his job is basically done.
- 59:00SPEAKER_01: His work is done, it's now out of his hands.
- 59:02SPEAKER_01: Jeremy, you're you're the only resident of Philadelphia on this panel.
- 59:07SPEAKER_01: What's the city like?
- 59:08SPEAKER_01: What are your thoughts on this?
- 59:10SPEAKER_00: It's buzzing, Sean.
- 59:11SPEAKER_00: The air's better, the water tastes better, the food tastes better, people are smiling more, they're nicer.
- 59:19SPEAKER_00: That actually might be true.
- 59:20SPEAKER_00: People are nicer in public.
- 59:22SPEAKER_00: You're I mean, you are right to say like there's only one way this could go, and it's down, Sean.
- 59:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, that this is Philadelphia after all.
- 59:28SPEAKER_00: It's exciting though.
- 59:30SPEAKER_00: Like, the East, even though the East got better this offseason as a whole, it's still the better conference to be in, and I still don't think like the conference itself is that good.
- 59:38SPEAKER_00: The Knicks kind of played out of their mind the last few months.
- 59:41SPEAKER_00: I don't know if they'll be able to keep that up going to next season, maybe.
- 59:46SPEAKER_00: But then besides them, it's like who in the East scares you?
- 59:50SPEAKER_00: No, I mean, hey, listen.
- 59:52SPEAKER_00: Cleveland no clearly.
- 59:54SPEAKER_00: Toronto, Toronto will be better, but I don't think they're that good.
- 59:57SPEAKER_00: I think they could easily, and I'll say easily too, win the East.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_00: Will they?
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_00: We'll have to figure it out year one, but that's realistic.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_00: I guess it's tough because like there's only one team that can win the championship every year, and if you don't, you're kind of disappointed, especially this era in pro sports, where it's really win it.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_00: What have you done if you didn't win it?
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_00: But they put themselves in a situation where realistically they could win the title, and it wouldn't be like it wouldn't be a shock.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_00: It would be a lot of people might assume it.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_00: So it's a good situation to be in.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_02: Guys, the Sixers haven't been to the conference finals in at this point, at the end of this season, 26 years.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'll take the conference finals.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_02: Like, get us there at least, which seems like conference finals as a success.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_02: I'd say win the East with this team as a success.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_01: Make the finals as a successful year.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, I think I think like we could have made the I mean, we've been to the semis multiple times.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_02: So it win the east.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_00: It's tough because Mark's right, like, they haven't been out of the second round since 2001.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_00: So in a way, it would be a success.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_00: The problem is, is like, especially in this city, you don't celebrate like winning the East.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_00: You celebrate the whole thing.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_00: So I see both sides.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_00: Like, it definitely would be a success to win the Easter Conference for sure.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_00: It probably would be a success to get out of the second round as well.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_00: But, you know, you also gotta win the whole thing.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_00: But listen, it's been it's been tough for a few decades now.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's such an exciting and exhilarating time because when there were expectations with prior Sixers teams in the past few years, they all kind of depended upon a bunch of hypotheticals.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_01: If this guy stayed healthy and if this guy took a jump and things like that.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_01: Now we still have some of those hypotheticals in place, but the painting is so much clearer now of what it could look like, where you're not even overly reliant on Joel Embiid's health to have a successful season.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_01: You could kind of do it without him because you still have four other guys in that starting lineup that are bona fide stars.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_01: So I think that's where the expectations have completely shifted to the fact that we're saying it's not necessarily title or bust, but it's kind of like, hey, you got to be one of the final four teams standing for us to take you seriously as a group.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_01: It's an exciting time.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_01: It's re-energized.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_01: Sixers fans alike.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_01: Jerry, you said the water tastes better.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_01: I'm not so sure I believe that in Philadelphia.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_01: That's that's probably too right on that.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_01: There's still some issues there with the water, but I think your point is well taken because it it does seem like a much happier, more hopeful place than it's been in a long, long time.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_01: It seems like Philly sports in general are in a pretty good spot if you just maybe take away those fight in Philly's every time Aaron Nola pitches.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_02: Hey, only I think we were the only city with with four sports seems to have all to make the playoffs in the last calendar year.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_02: So certainly been worse for Philly.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_01: So we're excited about the NBA.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_01: This we will be monitoring the NBA season on this program, which hasn't happened before.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_01: So a lot to be excited about.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_01: Boys, I think we've done a good job covering a lot of topics today.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_01: As we wrap up, do we have any recommendations on the way out?
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_01: I have a movie that I'm not sure either of you have seen, but I would recommend you watch, and that is the drama.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_01: Have you guys heard of this or seen it?
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_01: It's with Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, came out a couple months ago.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_01: It's an interesting concept.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_01: Basically, the concept is that they're it's during their wedding week and they're telling stories, and the story is that they're sharing the worst thing that each of them have ever done.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_01: And Zendaya's story that she gives is one that changes the whole dynamic of the wedding week.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_01: So I would encourage you guys to go watch.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_01: I think it's a pretty cool premise for a movie.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_02: Sounds interesting.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm gonna go with I Will Find You on Netflix.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_02: It is impossible to stop.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_02: Like, like we have to actually cut off and like be like we have to go to bed or else we're gonna stay up till four in the morning.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_02: Eight episodes.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's a Harlan Coben book and reenacted for Netflix.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_02: Good cast.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_02: Um Britt Lauer, Lower, or whatever, I forget how you pronounce your last name, from Severance with red hair.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_02: She's one of the main characters, great actress, awesome show.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_02: Like, Edge of your seat, love it.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_02: Got two episodes left, gonna knock them out tonight, so I'll have a full review, but highly recommend.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_02: It's number one on my list right now.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_01: Wow, I will find you.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_01: When I think of I Will Find You, I think of Wedding Crashers.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_01: Jeremy.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_01: That's fine.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_02: Totally different vibe from Wedding Crashers, that's for sure.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_00: I've been watching the Larry David new series on HBO, Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Larry.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's called.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_00: A lot of a lot of the bits are kind of recycled.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_00: A lot of jokes are recycled from Curb, but there's a lot of funny stuff.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of funny uh jokes and uh bits.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_00: It's like it's like uh it's like kind of drunk history without being drunk.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_00: It's just like it's like reenactment of history in a funny way, like kind of like um Saturday Night Live, but with Larry.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_00: And uh so it's cool.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_00: It's uh there's some there's some uh funny bits and some uh good stuff in there.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_00: So easy, easy TV watching too.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_01: I was with one of our friends, Ryan, this past weekend, and he was telling me about a scene where he Larry brought back the chat and cut back in old old times.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_01: I think maybe when like George Washington was around and he's reenacting a chat and cut where he cuts the line or something.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I'm excited to tune in to see that because that that kind of humor, the Larry David humor, is right up my alley.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's a classic curb there, too.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_00: That was a funny one.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_01: Well, boys, I think that covers it for today's episode.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_01: I appreciate you both hopping on.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_02: Sean, thanks for having us.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_02: As always, uh, it's been a pleasure to be a more frequent face on the pod, and I'm honored to be accompanying Jeremy Good on his return to the pod after a hiatus, uh, whether that was self-inflicted or not.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_02: And uh yeah, it was a it was a great time today.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_01: Always a pleasure, Mark.
