- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Five Good Minutes.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: You're listening to today's inspirational message on the book of Genesis with Dan Irvin.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: Well, welcome to the Five Good Minutes podcast this week.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: We're going to be in Genesis chapter 40 this week.
- 0:19SPEAKER_01: And if you've been following along in the Genesis series, either on Five Good Minutes or the current message series, you know we've been looking at the life of Joseph.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: And Joseph's life, you know, is the story as we picked it up.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: He was betrayed by his own brothers, sold into slavery, shipped off to Egypt.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: And then things actually took a turn for Joseph, where he was recognized as someone that was trustworthy and a hard worker, and he was elevated in the household of Potiphar, who was a servant to Pharaoh.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: And then in chapter 39, it took another turn where we see Potiphar's wife accuse Joseph, and Joseph is sent to prison, falsely accused and sent to prison.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: Seemingly probably not a place that Joseph thought he would be at that point in his journey.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: And what's interesting about how chapter 40 starts is in verse 1, the opening lines of the chapter are sometime afterward, and the story goes on, and we begin to see how the story unfolds.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: But I just thought that was interesting how there was no explanation.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: There was no, you know, and God explained to Joseph in grand detail why this happened to him or why he landed in prison.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: You know, sometimes in our own lives, I think when circumstances are less than ideal, when things happen in our lives that we can't explain, we look to God and we wrestle with God and we say, God, you owe me.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: I demand an explanation for this.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: What has gone wrong?
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: What have I done to deserve this?
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: Oftentimes we we take one of two avenues.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: We say, What have I done to bring this upon myself?
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Or we wrestle and we say, God, I haven't done anything wrong.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: What are you so powerless?
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Are you so out of control, or you just do not care about my life?
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: And we wrestle with these ideas.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: And perhaps Joseph was in this place as well.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: But what Genesis 40, I think, reminds us of is that God can be at work, profoundly at work, when he appears to be silent.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: You see, I as we know from from later on in the book of Genesis, and as Joseph's story will unfold, that this detour, this prison sentence, this was all part of God's grand plan for Joseph's life.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: Even though Joseph probably couldn't couldn't see it yet, couldn't understand it.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: I think this is one of the greatest truisms about the Christian life, is that oftentimes we think God has has left, we think God is is not listening, God does not care, God is absent.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: When in reality God is working behind the scenes to do something for us in our lives that we could never dream or imagine for ourselves.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: You see, even in the story of Joseph, we see a glimpse of Jesus Christ and someone that would come centuries later, many centuries, years later, to to show us what it means to truly be someone who was falsely accused, uh taken away, arrested, killed.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: In a way that he deserved none of that.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: It would have been very easy for for Jesus to blame God, to wonder where God was in all of this.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: But we know from the story of Jesus Christ and from the gospel accounts that Jesus was able to conquer death, was able to defeat the power of sin, once and for all, was able to pay the penalty that was ours to pay.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: So maybe the question you've been asking God is is God, why?
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: God, why has this happened?
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: Why are these the cards that I've been dealt?
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: Well, rest assured that the story of redemptive history and the Bible and the story that God is painting in our lives is that one day there will be an ultimate hope, that there will be an ultimate restoration of all things, and that on this planet earth we may never see the circumstances come together like we think they should.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: But the promise of putting our hope and our faith in Jesus is that one day God has promised that all the tears, all the pain, all the anguish will be wiped away.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: And we can rest in that today.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: God, thank you for giving us your Son Jesus so that we could know that you have not forgotten about us, that you have not left us, God, that you have a plan for our lives and for the world.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: God, thank you for loving us enough in this way.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Help us to put our trust in that hope today.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Thanks for joining us here today.
