- 0:46OK, so Hyperlexia. This has been probably one of
- 0:49the most requested videos I've had in a long time if you want
- 0:52me to talk about Hyperlexia. So Hyperlexia basically is a is
- 0:58basically an ability where a child can read far beyond their
- 1:03reading age. Like the four year old could be
- 1:05reading books that are made for teenagers, right?
- 1:07Which is super interesting. So hyperlexia and autism come
- 1:11kind of hand in hand, but hyperlexia is a recognition and
- 1:15so it isn't always within an autism selection disorder.
- 1:18So hyperlexia, because it's quite rare, it doesn't happen
- 1:22with, it's not common within everybody with autism, but it is
- 1:25commonly associated. If you do have hyperlexia, it's
- 1:27probably alongside the fact that you are autistic as well.
- 1:30So it is actually possible to have a diagnosis of just
- 1:33hyperlexia without being Co occurring with autism.
- 1:37So again, this is kind of super rare, but it does happen.
- 1:40You can't just have hyperlexia or hyperlexia and not show what
- 1:43the pronunciation is. So that being said, it's
- 1:47commonly linked with autism and it showed that 84% of children
- 1:50with hyperlexia are on the autism spectrum, which is quite
- 1:53interesting. You know, statistics are pretty
- 1:54high, right? And it's a fascinating
- 1:57condition. And it leads to many to wonder
- 2:00if a child is gifted or if a child is on the autism spectrum.
- 2:03Because that's another thing you can have gifted children, which
- 2:04they're just really, you know, super gifted in a certain area.
- 2:07But hyperlexia, actually, it comes as more of a condition
- 2:11because obviously it's kind of come over with things like
- 2:13autism. So what I've done is I wanted to
- 2:15talk about some signs of hyperlexia so that you could
- 2:18kind of identify it in somebody you know and how how to really
- 2:21know if someone has hyperlexia or they're gifted, right.
- 2:24So the first thing I want to talk about is signs of
- 2:26developmental disorders. So as children with hyperlexia
- 2:29are able to read really well because like that's the
- 2:32condition, they will also show issues in developing other
- 2:35skills, kind of like speaking and learning to speak.
- 2:37And not only will they develop speech delay, sometimes they can
- 2:41actually be nonverbal and not speak at all.
- 2:43So they may be really advanced in reading and read everything
- 2:47into the sun, but they probably won't be able to speak those
- 2:50things back to you, which is quite interesting.
- 2:51Right now, #2 is quite an obvious one, but it's affinity
- 2:54for books. So children with hyperlexia will
- 2:57have like a huge affinity for books and reading for obvious
- 3:00reasons. It's because, well, read books
- 3:03contain words and words are used for reading.
- 3:06And reading is kind of like where, you know, hyperlexia
- 3:08takes flight. That's what it is.
- 3:10It's it's a reading thing. So I find it really, really
- 3:13interesting that it's just, it just, it fascinates me.
- 3:17It absolutely fascinates me. But books doesn't doesn't just
- 3:19mean like, you know, analog books from back in the day.
- 3:21This could be audio books, this could be like any kind of book.
- 3:26It could be a PDF, iBooks, whatever, you know, digital
- 3:28downloads. But definitely for books is is,
- 3:31is what it's at because it's also kind of like a learning
- 3:33thing, so reading and learning at the same time, which is where
- 3:35that kind of comes into play here.
- 3:37So #3 is the ability to learn quickly like I've seen about
- 3:40learning, right. So children, Hyperlexia will be
- 3:43able to learn to read really quickly without much teaching
- 3:45involved. You know, they might to get them
- 3:47started, they may need a little bit of like pacing together of
- 3:50things just like typically anybody else would.
- 3:53But the acceleration from, you know, starting to read to being
- 3:57expert level reading kind of just goes super fast.
- 4:01And people with hyperlexia are just really quick at learning
- 4:05those things because they kind of absorb all of those things
- 4:08that come out of the disorder. They learn all the things that
- 4:12are coming into the play, like how to read a book, how to
- 4:14develop sentences within that book, how to learn the structure
- 4:17of a book. And then they'll have an
- 4:19affinity, four books. I think this is absolutely
- 4:20fascinating. Again, it's a super
- 4:22recommendation, but it's 84% come orbid with autism spectrum
- 4:25disorders. So I want to know, do you guys
- 4:28know much about hyperlexia? Have you ever come across it?
- 4:30Do you have hyperlexia? Drop me a comment down below and
- 4:32let's have a conversation about that because it's super new to
- 4:35me and I'd love to know that, right?
- 4:38And I read every comment, so it's never wasted.
- 4:40So if you think this video is helpful, please share it on
- 4:42Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you like this video, give
