- 0:42Our message is here now from the U.S. Municipal Stadium, here on the shores of Lake Erie, in Cleveland, Ohio.
- 0:50From where today, the mutual broadcasting system is pleased to bring you the All-Star Game.
- 0:56Well, it certainly is a wonderful sight here in Cleveland today, in this huge stadium with seats between 80 and 85,000 people.
- 1:05We'll see it up here now, just back at the home plate, up in the upper deck of this stadium, looking down on the field.
- 1:12As the players of the American League and the players of the National League are getting ready for the third edition of one of baseball's greatest classics, the All-Star Game.
- 1:24All morning long, there have been lines outside this stadium at the entranceways, waiting for the unreserved seats to be put on sale.
- 1:35We came into the stadium this morning around 9.30, and at that time there were several thousand people waiting out there outside the bleachers, just waiting for the gates to open up.
- 1:48And now exactly one-half hour before game time, I say there are, in the neighborhood, between 55 and 65,000 people already on hand.
- 1:58The expected crowd today of around 80 or 85,000 people.
- 2:03I wouldn't be at all surprised from all reports, but what the stadium today will be absolutely jammed, and that is the capacity of somewhere around 85 to 88,000 people.
- 2:14Right now the National League team is putting on a workout down here on the field.
- 2:19You see a lot of familiar faces. There's Bill Terry, working out his first base.
- 2:23R.P. Vaughan, the famous shortstop of the Pittsburgh Pirates, is over his short.
- 2:27Here at third base, one of the greatest players in the game today, Kevill Martin, the wild horse of the old days, who's been the star of many important games, World Series and regular scheduled games of the St. Louis Tigers.
- 2:38There at second base, one of the finest second basemen in baseball today, Billy Herman, who we should call the Cubs.
- 2:43Who's going to make the fourth member of the starting infield of the National League team today.
- 2:49Behind the plate will be the manager of the Philadelphia entry of the National League, Jimmy Wilson.
- 2:55He's going to catch.
- 2:57Now while we're talking about the starting lineup, I know that many thousands of you would like to follow the play of this game today by the old scorecard method.
- 3:06That is if you'd like to keep right in touch with us here in Cleveland and have your own scorecard.
- 3:11And so I'm going to give you now, even though it is 25 or 26 minutes before the actual start of the play, the starting batting order and lineup for the National League All-Stars and the American League All-Stars.
- 3:23I might tell you too that it's been rather stressful here in Cleveland all day today.
- 3:27It's very cloudy overhead now, but it just doesn't seem like it's going to rain.
- 3:31And I certainly hope that it doesn't rain, and in any way, Ma, the pleasure and the happiness of this great crowd is going to get out of what should be a court and good ball game out here today.
- 3:43Now for the official batting order and lineup.
- 3:46And first we'll take the National League team.
- 3:48I'm going to put it to you slowly so that you'll have plenty of time to write it down.
- 3:53The batting order and the lineup.
- 3:56The National League, Keppel Martin, St. Louis, third base.
- 4:02Keppel Martin, St. Louis, third base.

- 4:37Wally Berger of Boston will play center field.
- 4:40He's out there now, dragging flies, getting himself acclimated out there.
- 4:45Wally Berger will play center field.
- 4:48Billy Herman of the Cubs will be at second.
- 4:52Billy Herman of the Cubs at second.
- 4:55Wilson of Philadelphia will catch.
- 4:58Wilson of Philadelphia will catch.
- 5:00And here's a surprise.
- 5:02The starting pitcher for the National League All-Stars will be Bill Walker of the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 5:08Bill Walker, a left-hander, will start the game for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 5:12He's a late entry in the National League team, a sort of a dark horse as it were,
- 5:16and he's taking the place of Van Lingo Mungo of Brooklyn,
- 5:19sustained an injury just a few days ago, which necessitated his not taking part in this great baseball class.
- 5:26Mungo is not at second.
- 5:27He's at second at St. Louis.
- 5:28The left-hander is going to start the game for the National League All-Stars.
- 5:33Now that's the batting order in line-up for the National League.
- 5:35Here's the batting order in line-up for the American League.
- 5:38Bosnick of Cleveland, right field.
- 5:44Bosnick, Cleveland, right field.
- 5:47Gellinger, Detroit, second base.
- 5:50Gellinger of Detroit at second.
- 5:53Gehrig of New York at first.
- 5:55Gehrig at first.
- 5:57Fox of Philadelphia at third.
- 5:59Fox at third.
- 6:01Johnson, Bob Johnson of Philadelphia, will play left field.
- 6:05Bob Johnson left field.
- 6:07Al Simmons of Chicago will play center field.
- 6:10Al Simmons center.
- 6:12Nicky Cochran, the manager of the American League All-Stars, will be back at the plate.
- 6:18Nicky Cochran will be the catcher.
- 6:20Joe Cronin, the manager of the Boston Red Sox, will play short.
- 6:24Cronin at short.
- 6:25And the starting pitcher for the American League will be Mel Hider of Cleveland.
- 6:29Mel Hider will be the starting pitcher for the American League team.
- 6:34Now there you have it.
- 6:35That's going to be the faceoff today in this great game here at Cleveland
- 6:40between the pick team of stars of the American League and a pick team of stars of the National League.
- 6:46Right now the reserve infield of the National League is getting a workout.
- 6:50There's Lip Collins of St. Louis over to first base in his great cardinal uniform.
- 6:54There's Burgess Whitehead, utility infielder of the National League working out at second base.
- 6:59I also want to tell you that the players are wearing their own uniform.
- 7:04The first, Al Simmons, is wearing the White Sox uniform.
- 7:07Wally Berger is wearing the uniform of the Boston Braves.
- 7:09Mel Hider of the New York Giants.
- 7:11So the boys are all out here today in uniform of the club that they represent.
- 7:16The grand side, I want to tell you, in several spots here in the stadium,
- 7:21there are bands located and now one has just been striking it up behind us here
- 7:26and the crowd left out of order.
- 7:28There's a regular festive spirit out here today and I hope it will be a grand game and that you all enjoy it.
- 7:33This 1935 meeting between the All-Stars, the National and American League,
- 7:38marks the third playing of this feature game.
- 7:40The American League with victorious in both games,
- 7:42winning in 1933 at Chicago by a score of 4-2 and in 1934 at New York by a score of 9-7,
- 7:49the margin of victory in each game being two runs.
- 7:51This year at Cleveland, the outstanding players of the National League
- 7:54are hopeful of breaking into the winning column.
- 7:56The player who largely threw his own efforts from Northampton to the American League in 1935
- 8:01made his own effort to draw victory to the American League in 1933,
- 8:04Babe Ruth, the well-known Bambino, is down there in a front row box seat.
- 8:09It was carefully expected by the American League that the 1933 event
- 8:13would develop into a glorification of any particular player, but it did.
- 8:17This game, for all intents and purposes, was made to order for Babe Ruth,
- 8:21and he didn't overlook a single opportunity to star both at bat and in the field.
- 8:25All-Ruth did, you remember, in the 4-2 victory,
- 8:28the 1933 meeting was to make two of the nine hits registered by the American League
- 8:32won a home run into the right field stand.
- 8:35That provided the necessary margin enjoyed by the American Leaguers
- 8:38at the finish of the battle in what had been labeled by the sports writers as the game of the century.
- 8:43In the field, the Maid made a one-handed stab of a line drive
- 8:46that would have put the National Leaguers in the ball game had it gone safe.
- 8:50In the 1934 game played at the Polo Grounds in New York,
- 8:53the National Leaguers hoped to leave an account,
- 8:55but were disappointed when the American Leaguers put on a six-run barrage in the fifth inning
- 8:59at the side of the old ball game, the final score being nine to seven.
- 9:02The National League had gotten away to a commanding lead in the first three innings,
- 9:06scoring four runs off the great Leslie Gomez,
- 9:09while Kyle Hubbell was shutting down the American Leaguers without a run.
- 9:12In the three innings that Hubbell worked, he was the sensation you remember,
- 9:15striking out six men, getting five such great hitters as Ruth,
- 9:19Gehrig, Fox, Simmons, and Cronin in succession.
- 9:22The hitoff bubble was made by Geren Gervais of Detroit, the first man to face it.
- 9:26From an American League angle, the two outstanding players were Earl Aberl and Mel Harder of the Cleveland Club,
- 9:31neither of whom were honored in a starting role.
- 9:34Harder was latched to the rescue of Bruffing in the fifth inning
- 9:36after three hits on the base on balls that scored two runs and left two men on the bases,
- 9:40one of whom scored on a double steal.
- 9:42He blanked the National Leaguers from then on, allowing only one hit.
- 9:45Aberl is a pink hitter in the fourth triple, driving in a run,
- 9:48and in the big six-run rally in the fifth,
- 9:50his double with the bases filled scored two more runs.
- 9:53There's a bit of a resume on what has happened in the two previous all-star games
- 9:57between the National League and the American League.
- 10:00Now most of the players have completed their practice down here.
- 10:03Photographers have banked all over the infield, that is, outside of the diamond and sculp,
- 10:08getting pictures of all the stars in some spots, getting them one at a time,
- 10:11and then getting them in groups so that they'll be...
- 10:15They're having an awfully busy time down here to the right at the American League side.
- 10:20Right now they're shooting some of the players who are taking part in the game,
- 10:24getting pictures of them with Dave Roos, the great San Vino, who's down there in the front row.
- 10:29There are celebrities here in Cleveland galore today.
- 10:31Down in the front row is Governor Mark Nel Davies of Ohio.
- 10:35Mayor Terry O. Davis of Cleveland will throw out the first ball.
- 10:39Jack Dixie, the home and after-mourner, Mark Oaks, the Wilderweight champion of the world.
- 10:44Dave Roos, Eddie Collins, one of the greatest second basemen, one of the greatest infielders of all time.
- 10:50Ford Flick is lending an official touch to the game today by his presence.
- 10:55As you know, he is the president of the National League.
- 11:00We're awfully sorry to say that our good friend Will Herridge,
- 11:03president of the American League, is not here today.
- 11:05He's ill in Chicago, and I know that he sadly feels awfully sad right now that he's not here.
- 11:12I know that all the ballplayers and everybody connected with the game certainly miss his will,
- 11:16and we wish you could see here.
- 11:17In his place, Black-Navon of Detroit is acting as Major Domo for the American League.
- 11:23Now the American League is going out there on the field, getting some practice.
- 11:27There's Al Simmons going into center field.
- 11:30Around the infield, Luke Gehrig is at first, Gellinger is at second,
- 11:33Sonnen is at short, and Jimmy Foxx is at third.
- 11:38And now, ladies and gentlemen, before this ballgame gets underway,
- 11:42the announcer who's assisting me in the broadcast today from Cleveland
- 11:45and who I'm very happy to work with in this mutual broadcasting system story of the game,
- 11:51Ellis Vanderpyl of Cleveland is right here at my right in the stadium.
- 11:55He has lots of dope for you on the players, somewhat of a history of what they've done this year,
- 12:01what they've done before.
- 12:02He also has a lot of dope on the other two games,
- 12:05and I'm sure that he has a lot of interesting things to say to you before we get this broadcast
- 12:10of this great game from Cleveland underway.
- 12:13Ladies and gentlemen, I want to introduce to you from Cleveland, Ohio, Ellis Vanderpyl.
- 12:17All right, Ellis, take it away.
- 12:18Thank you, Bob Elson.
- 12:19This afternoon Cleveland is indeed proud to be host to this great galaxy of stars representing the American and National League.
- 12:26Bob Elson has given you the starting lineup for the afternoon,
- 12:29and in order that you may be properly informed before this great game gets underway,
- 12:33I'm going to repeat the lineup for you and give you a thumbnail sketch of all the players who will participate in the opening play.
- 12:40Leading off for the American League, let's skip over to the National League first because they will lead off this afternoon.
- 12:46Leading off for the National League, Pepper Martin at St. Louis playing third base.
- 12:50This is the third all-star game in which Pepper Martin has taken a five.
- 12:56Joe Pepper Martin of St. Louis Cardinals is one of the great players in the National League today.
- 13:01The players who witnessed the 1931 World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Philadelphia Athletics
- 13:06saw John Leonard Martin exhibit some of the most sensational base running ever recorded in a fall classic.
- 13:12Five stolen bases were topped up to his credit.
- 13:14To make his feet more spectacular, he usually completes his actions by sliding in on his stomach.
- 13:20His nickname of Pepper described very well his play on the diamond.
- 13:23He was listed as a pitcher when he launched his professional career in 1923.
- 13:28The Cardinals acquired him from Rochester, the International League in 1930 and stationed him in the outfield.
- 13:33There he played until 1932 when he was out with injuries and Joe Medwick took over his job.
- 13:39This caused Martin to try the infield in 1933 and there he has stayed ever since.
- 13:44Pepper, 31 years old, was born in Temple, Oklahoma.
- 13:47Five feet, nine and a half inches tall and weighs 175 pounds.
- 13:51He backs and throws right-handed.
- 13:54The second in the National League lineup is Aki Vaughn of Pittsburgh, shortstop.
- 13:59Floyd is his real name, Floyd Aki Vaughn.
- 14:02When the Pittsburgh Pirates went into spring training at Paso Robe, California, 1931,
- 14:07Odd Drake, the manager of the Wichita Kansas Club, a pirate farm,
- 14:10squad with him a kid shortstop by the name of Vaughn.
- 14:13A quiet kid, he was inconspicuous around the camp, but he speeded on the diamond spoke for itself.
- 14:18He was too green for Major League then, but after one more year at Wichita,
- 14:22Aki came up to give Pittsburgh some of the best shortstoppings for many years.
- 14:26Aki is still quiet, but his stellar all-around play makes him now a most conspicuous member of the team.
- 14:32He's only 23 years old, but he has put in three full seasons as short for the Pirates.
- 14:36In those three years, he has averaged 322 at the back and 934 a field marked that any man can shoot at.
- 14:43He was born in Clifton, Arkansas, and it's from that state that he gets his nickname.
- 14:48Five feet, ten and a half inches tall, weighs 175 pounds.
- 14:51He backs left and throws right.
- 14:53Third, Mel Ott. Mel Ott playing right field for the National League team this afternoon.
- 15:00Mel Ott, there are very few players, if any, who can boast at the age of 26 that they have ten years of Major League experience under their belt.
- 15:08That, however, is Mel Ott's record.
- 15:10The late John McGraw saw a possibility to assign him to a giant contract when the latter was a mere kid of 16 years.
- 15:17Mel reported to New York the next year and has been with them ever since, never having done time in the minors.
- 15:22Mel is a natural hitter with tremendous power.
- 15:25Left hand is at the plate and is what is known as a full hitter, as most of his balls are hit to right field.
- 15:30Some people wonder where Ott gets his power, for he's only five feet, eight and a half inches tall, and curbers the beam at 168 pounds.
- 15:38Mel has a lifetime batting average of 316 and has batted in more than a share of runs for the Giants.
- 15:43Born in Brentland, Louisiana, bats left and throws right.
- 15:47Playing left field for the National League team this afternoon, Joe Medwick of St. Louis.
- 15:53Wherever Ducky Medwick has a good day for the St. Louis Cardinals either at batterer field,
- 15:58the folks back in Catterette, New Jersey get that satisfied look on their faces.
- 16:02Ducky is their home-town boy making good.
- 16:05Back in 1929, Medwick's a star fullback in football, poet on the cages, and man of all trades in baseball at Catterette High School.
- 16:13Three years later he was stepping in the outfield position with a card made vacant by Kevin Martin's injury.
- 16:18There he has been ever since. Joe acquired the name Ducky while swimming.
- 16:22Someone remarked that he swam just like a duck. A stocky young man weighing 187 pounds, standing five feet, 10 inches tall.
- 16:29He is a slashing hitter and a possessor of a real home run wallet.
- 16:33He has hit better than 300 every season of his big league career,
- 16:36and it was his timely plotting that helped the Card to capture the World Series last fall.
- 16:40Medwick gets 24 years old, bats, and throws right.
- 16:44Bill Terry is on first base for the National League this afternoon.
- 16:49William Harrell Terry, that's his name, the strategic manager of the New York Giants,
- 16:53and he's playing his 22nd season of professional baseball,
- 16:56and it's just about as active as he was when he signed with Atlanta the Southern Association in 1914.
- 17:01Bill came to the Giants, the only major club that he's ever played with, in 1923 from Toledo and the American Association.
- 17:08Since that time, he's been one of the senior circuit's leading batsmen.
- 17:11During his 12 years in the big leagues, he has the enviable batting average of 342.
- 17:18In 1930, Bill wrapped the pills for a temptation average of 401.
- 17:23When John McGraw gave up the management of his Giants in 1932, Terry was made his successor.
- 17:28In the following year, he led his team to the Panadol World Championship.
- 17:32Last year, they were barely known as out by the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 17:36Now today, they're leading the league by a margin of almost nine runs.
- 17:39Bill was born in Atlanta, Georgia, October 30, 1898, six feet, one inch tall, and weighs 200 pounds, bats, and throws left.
- 17:49Playing center field today, Wally Berger, the hard-hitting, brave from Boston.
- 17:54No other Boston brave name has appeared on the home run list as many times in recent years as has that of Wally Berger.
- 18:00The big outfielder was a natural hitter and packed dynamite at the plate, especially in the pints when runs are needed.
- 18:05Wally was born in Chicago, October 10, 1905, but he spent his boyhood in San Francisco, a city that has turned out lots of good ballplayers.
- 18:13He joined the San Francisco Seals in 1923, but was injured and did not play organized ball again until 1927.
- 18:20He went to Boston in 1930 from Los Angeles, and there he's been ever since.
- 18:24Wally claims he got his greatest thrill in his second game in the majors against the Brooklyn Dodgers when he cracked a home run with a base as full to win the game.
- 18:32Berger, six feet, two and a half inches tall, weighs 200 pounds.
- 18:35He bats right-handed and throws from the same side.
- 18:38Billy Herman playing at second base. Billy Herman off the Chicago Cubs.
- 18:47Chicago's young second back of Billy Herman broke into the baseball limelight in 1933 when he handled a 466-foot out with a keystone cushion to break the old record made by Billy Sweeney of Boston in 1912.
- 18:59Herman first came under the appraising eye of a Cub scout when the farm was playing with Louisville in the American Association.
- 19:05The scout very readily approved of Billy's play, and the Cubs bought him for $50,000 in 1931.
- 19:10He was immediately put to work filling the spot just vacated by Rogers Hornsby, today serving as a coach on the American League team.
- 19:17And he soon had the Windy City fans forgetting that Rogers' farce fielding was concerned.
- 19:21Of course, he was unable to duplicate his predecessor's work at bat, but he has averaged better than 300 since joining the Cubs.
- 19:28Herman, now 25 years old, was born in New Albany, Indiana.
- 19:31Five feet, 11 inches tall, weighs 172 pounds.
- 19:35Bats and throws right-handed.
- 19:37To catch her today, Jimmy Wilson, the popular manager of the Philadelphia National League Ball Club.
- 19:44Jimmy Wilson, who was certain to break into the star play today, is rated one of the best catchers in the business.
- 19:52Aside from doing most of the catching for the Philadelphia Nationals, he manages the club as an added responsibility, making him a rather busy young man.
- 19:59Wilson broke into the big show back in 1923 with the Philadelphia Nationals.
- 20:03After spending better than five years with the Phillies, he was traded to St. Louis in May of 1928 for Virgil Davis and home appeal.
- 20:10After six years with the Cardinals, Jimmy was handed a return ticket to Philadelphia, being traded on November 15, 1933 for Virgil Davis, the same Virgil who figured in the other deal.
- 20:20And Philadelphia also came to Philadelphia in that same deal.
- 20:23Under Jimmy Wilson's direction, the Phillies have made much progress, even though they have not as yet reached a very lofty perch in the league standing.
- 20:30Wilson has developed a number of mighty good-looking youngsters during his short-regime as manager and as high hope for a future Phillies.
- 20:37And now, for the pitching today, is Walker, Walker or Bill Walker of the St. Louis, an added starter when Van Mungo was hurt.
- 20:52He has won six games, lost two this year, a left-hander, and came to St. Louis from the Giants in 1931 in a deal which sent Gus Manchusore Ketcher to the Giants.
- 21:05And now for the American League lineup, Joe Bartmik, popular Cleveland player, playing in right field.
- 21:12Second base, Charlie Gehring of Detroit, who is playing today in his third All-Star game.
- 21:18First base, Lou Gehrig of New York, Columbia Lou, one of the greatest first basemen of all time.
- 21:24A hardworking player, a money player, and a man who can always be counted to give his best in a pitch.
- 21:29Third base, Jimmy Fox, versatile Jimmy Fox, Ketcher, first baseman, and today third baseman, another fine player that Connie Mack has brought into baseball.
- 21:40Left field, Bob Johnson, Cherokee Indian, one of the pair of brothers that has made its mark in the American League.
- 21:47Bob Johnson of Philadelphia playing left field.
- 21:50In center field, Al Simmons of Chicago, for many athletics, now playing left field in the regular Chicago lineup, but in center field today for the American League All-Star team.
- 22:02But catching Mickey Cochran, Detroit. Mickey Cochran before the game when we were down on the field getting the official lineup.
- 22:09Roger Hemsley and Mickey Cochran together, Bob Elton and I approached, and Mickey started to give the lineup until he came to his own place.
- 22:15And then he turned to Roger and said, I guess I'll star Hemsley this afternoon. And Roger said, no sir, you'll get behind the bat.
- 22:21So Mickey Cochran is going to be catching for the American All-Stars this afternoon.
- 22:25Shortstop, Joe Cronin, the youthful manager some years ago who brought a pennant to Washington, now managing Tom Yockey's team at the Red Sox clock in Boston.
- 22:34Picking Mel Hata, Mel Hata the young Cleveland A's who is one of the stars of baseball.
- 22:39The star of last year's 1934 game. And now here's Bob Elton with some additional dough.
- 22:45Thank you very much Ellis. The ladies and gentlemen it's almost time now for the ballgame to get underway.
- 22:50One of the bands out here has just marched across the field.
- 22:53And now out there at the flagpole in center field in front of the bleachers, which is about 462 feet from the home plate, are going to raise the flag.
- 23:03Here comes Mayor Davis of Cleveland walking out onto the field.
- 23:07He's going to throw the first ball. The umpires have just walked up to the plate.
- 23:10There may be a last minute change in the American League pitchers.
- 23:13That's the Gomez. It's starting to warm up out here.
- 23:17Off here to the right in front of the New York bench.
- 23:19And it may be Gomez starting in place of Harder.
- 23:22But we'll have all that dough for you in just a very few minutes.
- 23:25Now the band out there in center field is standing with tension.
- 23:32The American flag is going to be raised out there.
- 23:36Now they're playing the Max and the Lens for the All-Star game.
- 24:36There we go.
- 24:52You can hear that cheer. Flag of Duffin Glades out there in center field.
- 24:57The umpires are up.
- 24:58By the way, the umpires in the National League are Sears and Major Kurtz.
- 25:04The American League, Ormsby and Geiso.
- 25:08The pitchers warming up now are Walker for the National League
- 25:11and Gomez for the American League.
- 25:13And it looks as though Mickey Cochran may have changed his mind about his starting pitcher.
- 25:17He told us down on the dugout a little while ago that he was going to start Mel Harder,
- 25:20but he evidently has changed his mind.
- 25:22Now the boys working out on the infield, getting it all in shape for the start of the game.
- 25:25Gee, this is a huge place.
- 25:27I want to give you just a thought of a picture before the ballgame starts
- 25:29of just what it looks like from up here.
- 25:31We're seated up here behind the plate, off the upper deck,
- 25:34just a little bit off to the left, a little bit off to the third base side.
- 25:38This municipal stadium here in Cleveland is a huge double-deck affair.
- 25:44It circles right around here to our left, down the left field line,
- 25:49and then branches off and then peers off at an angle out across left field
- 25:54and out towards center field so that the stand, as it moves out from the left field
- 25:58and from the end of the left field line and moving out towards center field,
- 26:02is backing away.
- 26:03That is, every foot farther out is farther away from the home plate.
- 26:07And it's the same way down the right field line,
- 26:10to the very extremity of the right field line, it's 320 feet.
- 26:13And then the stand shoots out the same way it does in left field,
- 26:16in the right center.
- 26:17Remember, it's a double-deck affair, and it seats approximately 85 to 88,000 people.
- 26:23And all the way across center field, there is a huge bleachers.
- 26:27This is one of the largest bleachers we've ever seen at any ballpark,
- 26:30and I believe it is the largest.
- 26:32It accommodates, I imagine, in the neighborhood of 15,000 people.
- 26:37That extends all the way across from where the double-deck grandstand ends,
- 26:42in left center, right across, all the way across center field,
- 26:45meets the double-deck grandstand again in right center.
- 26:49Then right in back of the bleachers, we're looking right out there now,
- 26:53right over second base, out towards center field,
- 26:55there is a huge scoreboard across the top.
- 26:58It says Cleveland Stadium, and there's a flagpole
- 27:01and a small American flag up on top of that pole.
- 27:04And off to the left, down in the field, there's a very high pole
- 27:08with a huge American flag, and that is a flag that has just been raised.
- 27:11Now the band has marched again off the field,
- 27:14coming out right field and across the right field foul line,
- 27:17and they're being seated at the end of the boxers,
- 27:22right down there near the end of the right field line.
- 27:25Ty Perkins of Detroit, another captain who spent many years
- 27:33with the Philadelphia Athletics, is captain Lepty Gomez,
- 27:37who's warming up for the New York team.
- 27:39Bill Walker of St. Louis is the starting pitcher for the National League.
- 27:44Now we're going to run over the official batting order
- 27:46and line up again for you quickly, while the managers and the captains
- 27:49and the two teams go over the last minute rules and so on and so forth
- 27:54with the umpires right down here below us at the home plate.
- 27:57National League, Martin, third base, Vaughn, shortstop,
- 28:00Potts, New York, Medwix, left field, Perry, first base,
- 28:05Berger, center field, Herman, second, Wilson, catching, and Walker pitching.
- 28:11Left field, fifth, center field, Hockman, catching,
- 28:22Stonin, short, and either Gomez or Harder will do the pitching.
- 28:26Harder has won 12 games this year and lost four.
- 28:29Gomez has won eight games and lost eight.
- 28:32Starting pitcher for the National League, Walker has won six games and lost two.
- 28:37The coaches for the National League,
- 28:53the American League coaches, the coaches for the National League are
- 28:56Charlie Grimm, the manager of the Chicago Cubs,
- 28:59and Chuck Dressen, the manager of the Cincinnati Reds.
- 29:02The ball game should be underway now, ladies and gentlemen,
- 29:04in Cleveland in just about three or four minutes.
- 29:07We're going to pause now briefly for station announcements.
- 29:10This is a mutual broadcasting system.
- 29:16This is WG and the Chicago Tribune stations on the Drake Hotel.
- 29:32Now the American League team is out on the field.
- 29:34There's Bob Johnson in left field.
- 29:36There's Al Simmons in center field.
- 29:39Joe Vodnik is in right field.
- 29:41Third base, Jimmy Fox.
- 29:43Shortstop, Joe Cronin.
- 29:44Second base, Charlie Geringer.
- 29:46First base, Lou Gehrig.
- 29:48Lefty Gomez is going to start.
- 29:51Gomez is the starting pitcher.
- 29:57Also a last minute change.
- 29:59A catcher for the American League will be Raleigh Hemsley.
- 30:05Mickey Cochran changed his mind on two points here in the last few minutes
- 30:09and is starting Gomez with Raleigh Hemsley of St. Louis doing the catch.
- 30:15Mayor Davis of Cleveland is down there now.
- 30:17He's going to throw the first ball.
- 30:20Other catch for the photographers who are banked all around down there to get set.
- 30:26Charlie Gressen is touching it third.
- 30:29Cincinnati manager Charlie Grim of the Cubs is touching it first.
- 30:33The ball game will be underway in just about one minute.
- 30:39This is certainly a glorious time here today in Cleveland.
- 30:41I certainly do wish you could all be out here.
- 30:43The weather is warm, still very cloudy, but I don't think there's any chance of rain.
- 30:49I certainly hope not.
- 30:53Here's the announcement.
- 31:03The public address system isn't working very well.
- 31:08In fact, it's pretty hard to hear from up here just what they are saying.
- 31:12We have our mutual broadcasting system microphones right out here in the open in the upper deck.
- 31:18It's a swell spot to see the ball games, and I certainly do hope that you all enjoy it.
- 31:22The announcer on the field is announcing the official starting order lineup through the public address system.
- 31:32I heard that one, Medwick left field.
- 31:38The third baseman, Jimmy Fox, is over talking to the pitcher.
- 31:49Mayor Davis is standing down here at the plate.
- 31:52He's going to throw the ball, and then the ball game will be underway.
- 31:58The umpire back on the plate is Ormsby of the American League.
- 32:03At first base is Major Terz of the National League.
- 32:06At second base is Geisel of the American League.
- 32:08And at third base is Ziggy Sears of the National League.
- 32:12First man at the bat is Peppermarkin, the wild horse of the old state.
- 32:15Here he is up at the plate.
- 32:17And Al Simmons is playing a little bit close for Martin.
- 32:20First pitch, he hits a pop fly just back of a short stop.
- 32:22Conan's going back. He may not be able to get it.
- 32:24It's locked for a hit.
- 32:25Peppermarkin drops his Texas Leaguer.
- 32:27Hits back on a short stop. He went back very fast.
- 32:30Conan and the left fielder Johnson came in very fast.
- 32:32Neither one of the boys could reach it, and at the first bit of the ball game, a hit for Peppermarkin.
- 32:40Now the next man to come up is Archie Vaughan, fighting 406 for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 32:44A left-handed hitter and a mighty dangerous fellow up there at the plate.
- 32:47There's a man on first. There's nobody out.
- 32:49The ball game has just started here in Cleveland.
- 32:51The All-Star Game. Gomez is getting his sign.
- 32:55First pitch was high and inside for the ball. All one.
- 33:03Now the catcher is walking out toward the mound.
- 33:05The toss of the pitcher while the umpires are shagging the photographers away from the baseline.
- 33:10Here's Hemsley coming back behind the plate.
- 33:18Raleigh Hemsley is back at the plate.
- 33:23Not a ball run on the batter.
- 33:25Here's the next pitch. It's a little bit outside and low for the ball.
- 33:27Ball two.
- 33:31Two and nothing now.
- 33:33O'Rourke is on with Peppermarkin on first.
- 33:36Next pitch is a fastball that comes in across his lead.
- 33:39And it's a strike. Now it's ball two and strike one for Archie Vaughan.
- 33:44The batting average today, as we told you, is 406.
- 33:47Here's the next pitch and it's in low and very close for the ball.
- 33:51Makes it ball three. Three and one now for Vaughan.
- 33:55Some of the latecomers walking down here in front of us.
- 33:57The aisle just obstructing our view a bit.
- 34:00Peppermarkin is on his way down on the hit and run play.
- 34:02There's a fly ball in the left field. Johnson comes in. He's under it.
- 34:05And he hides it for the first out.
- 34:06The hit and run play with Peppermarkin starting for second with the pitch.
- 34:09And the batter ball hit it in the left field.
- 34:11Johnson came in and made an easy catch of it for the first out.
- 34:14One gone.
- 34:15Now the next man to come up is Melout of New York who's playing right field.
- 34:18And today it is batting 324.
- 34:25Melout batting. Peppermarkin on first base with one gone.
- 34:28On the first half of the first inning, the game is just started.
- 34:31The pitchers are Gomez for the American League. Bill Walker for the next.
- 34:35Again the umpires at ball and play.
- 34:40Several photographers, three or four, are wanting to take six points of advantage
- 34:48just outside of the third base line.
- 34:51And the umpires go into a huddle and now they're allowed and Melout steps into the batter's box.
- 34:57Here's the first pitch.
- 34:59And it comes in Rowan inside for a ball. Ball one.
- 35:05Man on first and one gone. Gomez pitching to Melout of New York.
- 35:09Third man up.
- 35:11Here's the next pitch. Duggles a runner down to second base.
- 35:13Here's the throw and it's a stolen base for Peppermarkin.
- 35:16Dolly Hensley's throw was a little bit high and to the second base side of the bag.
- 35:21And Croman, the shortstop, took the throw and had to lean over the bag to get the throw.
- 35:26And in the meantime, Peppermarkin hooks around inside the bag and he's safe at second.
- 35:30It's a stolen base for Peppermarkin.
- 35:32He's on second base with a count of ball two on the batter.
- 35:34Melout, here's the next pitch.
- 35:36It's a strike. It's a fall. It was a fastball right in their way tie.
- 35:39Ball two and strike one for Melout.
- 35:41Man on second, remember, with one gone in the first half of the first inning and the National League team batting.
- 35:47American League is talking up out there in the infield. Lots of Peppermarkin.
- 35:51Shawty words of encouragement to Gomez.
- 35:53Ball hits it on the ground. Out to the shortstop. Corland has been fast.
- 35:56Gets it over to first base and he's out for the second out.
- 35:58And Peppermarkin advances from second to third.
- 36:01There's two gone. Melout went out from Corland to Gary.
- 36:04Two gone now and a man on third.
- 36:06And Ducky Medwick of St. Louis is the batter.
- 36:08His average today is 362 and he's one of the most dangerous batsmen in baseball today.
- 36:17Here's Medwick up with a chance to drive in the run.
- 36:19If he comes through with a blow here in the first inning.
- 36:21Here's the first pitch. It's a slow curve and it broke.
- 36:23Jumped a little bit too close to a right hand batter and backed him away from the plate a bit.
- 36:26It's ball one.
- 36:32If he's taking his time, starts that slow windup again.
- 36:35Here's the next pitch. Medwick jumped away from a fastball.
- 36:38It almost hit him in the leg. It's ball two.
- 36:45That was a fastball.
- 36:47Gomez is winding up again. Here's the next pitch.
- 36:49That was a fastball around his neck and Medwick swung hard and lifted.
- 36:52He swung so hard he fell down.
- 36:56Medwick batting with Pepper Martin on third and two gone in the first inning.
- 37:00Here's the next pitch. He hit the high foul which is going back into the grandstand off there to the right.
- 37:06There's the first go-hate from the fans and believe me they're having a wild scandal for that ball up here in the upper deck.
- 37:13The National League team is batting. There's a man on third.
- 37:15There's a count of ball two and strike two on the batter who is Medwick.
- 37:18And there is two gone.
- 37:20Here's the next pitch. Fastball high. Medwick swung and got a piece of the ball and fouled it back into the screen.
- 37:25And the count is two and three.
- 37:31Ballyhamsley gets another new face ball.
- 37:35Lumpai Longsley goes it out to the pitcher.
- 37:37Gomez wipes his hands across the front of his uniform a bit.
- 37:40Pulls the pick of his cap and gets all set.
- 37:42How he's starting that windup of his.
- 37:44Here comes the next pitch to Medwick. It's a slow curve.
- 37:46The first pitch that foul off there to the left has almost hit one of the photographers kneeling on the ground there with his camera.
- 37:50And the count is two and two.
- 37:52Ball two and strike two for Medwick.
- 37:54A man on third. Two gone in the first half of the first inning.
- 37:57Gomez, a lefty pitching for the American League.
- 37:59And Walker, a left-hander, will pitch for the National.
- 38:04Next pitch is way outside. Almost a wild pitch.
- 38:06Tensley has to go way outside and jump up to grab that one.
- 38:08And the count is three and two.
- 38:11Next man to come up will be Bill Terry.
- 38:13Ball three and strike two.
- 38:16Next pitch is a fastball.
- 38:19He's started to swing at the ball.
- 38:21Tried to stop. And the umpire says, you're out on strike.
- 38:25Medwick is putting up a beat down there.
- 38:27The pitch is high and outside.
- 38:29Medwick started to swing. Tried to stop his swing before he went more than halfway around.
- 38:33But the umpire says, no, you swung at it.
- 38:35And you're out on strike.
- 38:37And Martin is left down the base.
- 38:39And Martin is left down the base.
- 38:48No runs.
- 38:50And one hit.
- 38:56Now we're going into the last half of the first inning.
- 39:01Now these three or four fans who have parked out at different spots around the stadium.
- 39:05Strike up the three.
- 39:10First man to bat.
- 39:12Tony Martin is in the middle of the offense.
- 39:14Stephen Boyd is in the center of the offense as he comes up to the plate.
- 39:21Jimmy Wolfson of Philadelphia is back on the plate.
- 39:23With an action lead team.
- 39:25Barry is at first. Billy Herman at second.
- 39:28Archie Vaughn at short. Pepper Martin at third.
- 39:31Medwick in left field.
- 39:32Wally Berger in center field. And Mel Aude in right field.
- 39:35That's the picture now.
- 39:36As we look down on this field.
- 39:38Here in the stadium at Cleveland, Ohio.
- 39:40As we go into the last half of the first inning.
- 39:42There is no score.
- 39:43The American League is coming up now at their first set.
- 39:48Here's Bogsnik, a Cleveland boy up at the plate.
- 39:50Right-handed hitter.
- 39:52Waiting for Walker's first pitch.
- 39:54Bill gets his sign. And here it is.
- 39:55The fastball that backed him away from the plate.
- 39:57In close for a right-hand hitter.
- 39:59And it's ball one.
- 40:01Roger Hornsby is coaching at first base.
- 40:03Del Baker of Detroit is coaching at third.
- 40:08He's getting his sign again.
- 40:11Here's the next pitch. And he hits the ground ball.
- 40:13The team first to the second.
- 40:14It's slow-goal. Billy Herman comes in fast.
- 40:15Zaps the ball over to first base.
- 40:16And he's out.
- 40:17Billy Herman to Terry for the first shot.
- 40:19A nice fast play.
- 40:20One-gone.
- 40:22And it's batting average today.
- 40:25There's 341.
- 40:27Walker looks him over carefully.
- 40:29The infielder's talking up out there.
- 40:31Here comes the wind-up on the first pitch.
- 40:33It's a fastball.
- 40:34It's outside of the way for ball one for Geringer.
- 40:37A left-handed hitter.
- 40:39One out.
- 40:40Nobody on the bases.
- 40:41Last half of the first inning.
- 40:43And it's a fastball.
- 40:45And it's a fastball.
- 40:47And it's a fastball.
- 40:49And it's a fastball.
- 40:51Last half of the first inning.
- 40:52No score on either side.
- 40:56Walker gets his sign again.
- 40:58He, too, has a very slow and deliberate sort of a wind-up.
- 41:00There's a fastball.
- 41:01It's in a little bit low.
- 41:02It was over the plate, but low.
- 41:04And it's ball two for Geringer.
- 41:06Walker turns around.
- 41:07Looks around the infield and the outfield.
- 41:09Let's see that everybody's in place.
- 41:13Center fielder Berger is moving over a little bit toward right center.
- 41:16And his left-handed batter.
- 41:20Here's the next pitch, and it almost hit him.
- 41:22Geringer has to back out of the way in a hurry to get out of the way of a pitch ball.
- 41:25And it's ball three.
- 41:28Next man to come up will be Columbia Lou Gehrig, the first baseman.
- 41:34Walker takes his time.
- 41:35He's just taking it easy out there now.
- 41:38Comes to wind up in the next pitch.
- 41:39He's waiting out the string, and there's a perfect pitch right over the heart of the plate.
- 41:42A called strike.
- 41:43Three and one.
- 41:45Now we'll see whether Charlie will wait out the string.
- 41:48Hoping to get a fourth ball.
- 41:50Or whether he'll poke it, knowing that Walker's going to try to get it in there.
- 41:54Wind up, and here's the pitch.
- 41:55Geringer backs away from ball four.
- 41:57Puts him on first base.
- 42:02Next man to come up is Lou Gehrig of New York.
- 42:04He's batting 314.
- 42:06Left-handed hitter.
- 42:10Lou has been sort of slow getting started this year.
- 42:13He's recognized by everyone as one of the greatest hitters in baseball.
- 42:17Walker's getting his time.
- 42:18Here's the first pitch.
- 42:19The curve ball, he hits it down the first base line to Terry.
- 42:21Up with the ball, gets it over to second base.
- 42:23Out of second, back over to first base, but safe at first.
- 42:26The play went from Terry to Vaughn, forcing Geringer at second base.
- 42:31From Vaughn back to Terry, hoping for a double play, but they miss.
- 42:34Gary gets by a foot.
- 42:37So Geringer is forced out at second base.
- 42:43Terry to Vaughn.
- 42:45Here's the man on first base.
- 42:49Brings up Jimmy Fox.
- 42:51Third base, who's batting 322.
- 42:54This fox up at the plate, a right-handed hitter.
- 42:57Medwick is playing very deep in left field for this fellow.
- 43:01First pitch to Fox has been low and close for a ball.
- 43:03Ball one.
- 43:06Boys out there in the infield talking up.
- 43:07You can hear them all the way up here.
- 43:08Lots of scatter, lots of pepper on both sides.
- 43:12Both want to win this ball game, want to win it fast.
- 43:17Two great teams out here today.
- 43:22Walker kicks the dirt around out there in the mound, getting it all smoothed down to his liking.
- 43:26Run around first, it's two off.
- 43:28Jimmy Fox is batting with a count-out and ball one.
- 43:30Walker's ready, here's the next pitch.
- 43:32Fox takes one right over the plate.
- 43:34It's a called strike.
- 43:36And Wilson takes the ball down to first base to Terry, trying to take Gering off the bag.
- 43:40But he's back there safely and the count is one and one.
- 43:43Two-one and strike one.
- 43:45A man on first with two outs.
- 43:49Walker draws the times up in front of him, watching the man on first base.
- 43:52Now he's ready.
- 43:53Here's the next pitch to Fox.
- 43:54It's outside, a fast ball at the knee.
- 43:56Makes it fall two and strike one.
- 44:00Two and one.
- 44:03Pepper marks the third.
- 44:05Archie Vaughn short.
- 44:06Billy Herman second.
- 44:07Terry at first.
- 44:08That's the National League infield.
- 44:10Walker's getting his sign again.
- 44:11Here's the next pitch.
- 44:12It's a slow ball and a beauty.
- 44:13Gee, that was a nice one.
- 44:14Right in there and the count is ball two and strike two.
- 44:17Walker threw a slow ball into Jimmy Fox.
- 44:19That was a beauty.
- 44:20Just came in below the shoulders, right over the plate.
- 44:22It's a called strike and the count is two and two.
- 44:26Run around first base.
- 44:27He's taking a short lead off.
- 44:29He's ready again.
- 44:30Here's the next pitch.
- 44:31It was a slow curve outside, below the knee.
- 44:34And it's ball three.
- 44:35Makes it three and two now.
- 44:39And on first with two off, three and two on the batter.
- 44:42Now, Garry will break for second base with a pitch.
- 44:45Three and two on the batter and two going.
- 44:47Garry on first base.
- 44:48Watch him now.
- 44:49Walker's getting ready.
- 44:50He throws the ball over to first base trying to pick Garry off,
- 44:52but he's back in the bag safely.
- 44:54Bill didn't have a very long lead off.
- 44:56He just bleeds back onto the bag.
- 44:58Walker pulls at the peak of his cap, gets ready out there again.
- 45:00He has a three and two count on Fox.
- 45:02Garry is edging off the back.
- 45:03There he goes.
- 45:04Here's the pitch.
- 45:05And the batter is long by the rim.
- 45:07Back, back, back, back.

- 1:11:58He tells me that nobody ever hit a ball in that creature from center field.
- 1:12:02And I can imagine that some wallop.
- 1:12:06Seems like blocks and blocks away out to that center field wall.

- 1:13:07picked it up again, and got it back into the infield.

- 1:34:22The umpires are just waiting for the umpires to come back.
- 1:34:32Now Schumacher's out there in the mound whipping over a few of the catchers.
- 1:34:36Joe Cronin is standing off there to the left side of the plate.

- 1:36:04There are a few vacant spots way out there in center field in the upper tier of the center field bleachers.
- 1:36:10But the grandstand, a double-deck deep affair all the way around from right center field down here,
- 1:36:16down the right field line of the plate, and then along the left field line and cutting back again off into left center field is completely jammed.
- 1:36:24I don't think there's a seat to be had.
- 1:36:31The delay is because they're going to change umpires now with half of the game over.
- 1:36:38And the umpires are changing their equipment.

- 1:38:25Nobody on the bases, nobody out of the last half of the fifth inning, the American League batting,

- 1:38:40The fastball, and he reaches out and swings and misses. Kuhlman is out on strike.
- 1:38:49Now the next man to come up, Kuhlman, coming up the bat for himself.
- 1:38:55Here he comes up toward the plate.
- 1:38:58The crowd is a little bit surprised, almost expected to see someone come up the bat for him,
- 1:39:02but Kuhlman's coming up the bat for himself.

- 1:40:08Now he made up his mind a little bit late to swing at that one.
- 1:40:12Schumacher's getting his sign again from Wilson.
- 1:40:14Here's the next pitch, a fastball, he hits it on the ground after the shortstop,
