- 0:09Speaker 1: Love you to the boys and girls.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I am Bang and we are back with another episode of Story Scaling, and I am here with a good, good friend of mine.
- 0:16Speaker 2: JT Nash Vegas.
- 0:17Speaker 1: JT Nash Vegas, I want to welcome you to Story Scaling.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Thank you for joining us.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Thank you for joining us.
- 0:22Speaker 1: The bio says JT Nash Vegas is a visual storyteller and content creator rooted in Nashville, by way of Northwest Arkansas, known for turning local culture into cinematic content.
- 0:33Speaker 1: As co-founder of Gems on VHS, he's helped grow a grassroots music video channel into 100K subscriber platform with a cult following through benville tv.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Jt nashvacus brings content and grit to branded content and events, regional storytelling, capturing moments with style and soul, whether he's behind the camera at a downtown block party or in the edit bay crafting moody artist profile.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Jt brings documentary instinct with digital polish, always focused on the human side of the story, behind the visuals.
- 1:06Speaker 1: What'd you think about that?
- 1:09Speaker 2: that's awesome.
- 1:09Speaker 2: That's first time I've heard anyone talk about me.
- 1:11Speaker 2: It's been great.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I didn't speak one thing and they gave a little blurb, but I was like, yeah, that's that's uh.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that's what I'm saying when you hear that bio, what?
- 1:20Speaker 1: what stands out to you there?
- 1:21Speaker 1: Is there anything you would take away, anything you would add to that?
- 1:24Speaker 1: Or, like you said, you're not somebody who might speak about yourself all the time.
- 1:29Speaker 1: So what comes to your mind when you hear this thing?
- 1:30Speaker 1: Because this is you, man, like you've done this.
- 1:33Speaker 2: I think it shows the passion of me loving real moments and events and putting myself out there, right?
- 1:39Speaker 2: I think a lot of creators I know talk about wanting to do things, but, like all the events and whether you said, whether I'm here, whether I'm here, yeah, I'm everywhere.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Cause you got to be everywhere, cause it's just part of the process.
- 1:54Speaker 1: When it comes down to it, One of the first things that drew me to you as a creator was I see you in my feed all the time.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Whether you're all the time and nowadays we see that so much of being a content creator is showing up but whether you're taking a video of a basketball game or a house that's being shown on some real estate stuff or a party is just content.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Where did that come from?
- 2:20Speaker 1: Is that, is that natural to you, or is that a muscle you had to flex?
- 2:23Speaker 2: Man, it's a hack I was lucky to find in this content creation world and I think it's me going into it blindly.
- 2:32Speaker 2: When I started, I was a stay-at-home dad and I was like all right, cool, I love commercials.
- 2:40Speaker 2: It's weird because I would be that person that would flip a channel.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Motion comes on.
- 2:45Speaker 2: I'm stopping, right, I'm stopping on the commercial instead of looking for the show, because commercials to me is like 15, 30 seconds and sport.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Back in the day, when commercials were really made Sure, sure, the Nike commercials and the Gatorade they were like just some amazing celebrities and so, and even music videos Everything had a short amount of time to tell a story and invoke some kind of passion, right.
- 3:08Speaker 2: And then I was like, man, I want to make videos, but how do I make videos?
- 3:12Speaker 1: what I do, right and so, uh, how far back are we talking?
- 3:15Speaker 1: How many years ago we're talking?
- 3:18Speaker 2: daughter's 12 year, 12.
- 3:19Speaker 2: She was born when I first kind of got into it, so I think 2012.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, was when I first started founding partner and we started getting the camera.
- 3:30Speaker 2: I would just show up at Farmer's Market, I would show up at events, but basically what I'm getting out to is I realized I needed content to practice with and a lot of people wait till they get that job or that moment or that thing that happens that they want to use and practice and go on in.
- 3:47Speaker 2: But no, I went out to farmer's market.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I show up at parties, whatever it is.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I would film and go back and then use that as my editing, right, and I think I was blessed because I had the time.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Yeah, honestly, if I was working nine to five, I don't think I could have maintained the passion to do what I do.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Sure, because it took many hours.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I mean, I don't even know the hours, honestly, I can't tell you because it was just like it's like playing a video game.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm editing.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Yeah, right, so for me, I'm going down and creating my own video games and that's the best way I can describe it.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Wow, because most people go home in the day, they just want to sit and play video games, watch a movie.
- 4:27Speaker 2: That's fun, right, right.
- 4:28Speaker 2: So for me, I get excited because I'm going to edit this video.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Wow, and what's fun about it?
- 4:34Speaker 2: Since it's a vlog, there's no expectation.
- 4:37Speaker 2: It'd be different if it was a client's video.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Sure, I'm like ooh, but I was like I'm like ooh, but I was able to make so much, so many videos now, because I use life as my tool to practice, yeah, and to see what I can.
- 4:50Speaker 2: That's why every video is different.
- 4:51Speaker 1: So when you pick up that, that camera for the first time, you go into the farmer's market, you're going to the parties, you're going to the community events.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Do you have any type of experience before that, or you're starting blank from from nothing start?
- 5:03Speaker 2: starting nothing.
- 5:04Speaker 2: It's, um, I say, the biggest thing that I have, uh, skill or superpower was be able to go in blindly and not worry what people are thinking.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Right, because even being older, when you show up the camera, especially the big cameras, like everybody's like, what's going on is usually some kind of issue, yeah, um, and so it kind of can be this thing of where people are always looking at you but you just have to go out and just do it and kind of um, I guess they call it imposter syndrome.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Yeah, just live it out.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yeah, go out, shoot content and just do it for yourself and not for anyone else.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Because for me, when I got into it, I didn't have a goal of being anybody or anything.
- 5:47Speaker 2: I just realized from the first time I could make videos like this is fun.
- 5:51Speaker 2: I made a music video Ante Successful, I remember, was the first music video me and this guy made together and we got paid like $150, right, it's like, yeah, we got paid.
- 6:03Speaker 2: That was like $200.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Paid like 150, right, it's like.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yeah, like got paid, that was like 200.
- 6:08Speaker 2: We had to split it.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I got 100 of we out there hours, but I got paid to do something.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Yeah, like I was able to make something, I was like, man, this must be what artists love when they paint just make something.
- 6:18Speaker 2: And so it was mainly having the passion and learning that, okay, I can do something I love to do and get paid for it yeah you know you ain't gonna make a lot of money for a while, yeah, but if you stay in it long enough, it's just good things happen let's talk about that.
- 6:36Speaker 1: When you went from just learning, just trying to get some content, like you said, at that point you were having fun with it and you were just building your, your skill set.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Yeah, you weren't even thinking about it like a career or nothing.
- 6:47Speaker 1: So that time you made that first hundred dollars from something that you made, you created, and it translated into dollars.
- 6:54Speaker 1: What did that do for you?
- 6:55Speaker 1: Did that make you?
- 6:56Speaker 1: Did you see things different like, oh man, it's a whole world out there, or was it a situation where it was?
- 7:01Speaker 1: Let me just keep having fun with this.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I think originally it was.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I saw a business behind it, and I say that because the first video I was mainly producing because, anthony, we only had one camera, two eye, and it's like I saw some footage of these moments.
- 7:19Speaker 2: But I always had a marketing mind right.
- 7:21Speaker 2: So for me it was like a dream come true of all these ideas of like, ooh, I can actually make my own commercial, right, and so I can make these music videos.
- 7:31Speaker 2: And I saw the process of it, right, the process of just going out shooting, but I didn't know the editing.
- 7:36Speaker 2: So even when I made that 100, I was excited.
- 7:39Speaker 2: I didn't know Anthony had to go back and edit for hours, yeah, hours.
- 7:44Speaker 2: I didn't know that side of it.
- 7:47Speaker 2: So that's where I got excited from the beginning of like, oh, I hooked up the artist, we did a video, we hung out, I got paid.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Oh, this is man.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Are you paid to hang out with people?
- 7:57Speaker 2: this is sick hype williams was killing in the game at the time.
- 8:00Speaker 2: That was like the, you know, the prior, the person.
- 8:02Speaker 2: But that's where I kind of had the motivation of like all right.
- 8:07Speaker 2: And also I was a stand-up dad, so I was limited to what I could do and I was like all right.
- 8:10Speaker 2: And it's like I used to take my daughter with me to video shoots because I had no choice.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Absolutely I wouldn't do it anymore because I feel like I don't know, it just didn't make sense, but I didn't.
- 8:19Speaker 2: I wasn't thinking what you have to do.
- 8:21Speaker 2: I wasn't thinking because I wasn't thinking, do what you have to do.
- 8:23Speaker 2: I wasn't thinking Because I wasn't trying to be anything.
- 8:25Speaker 2: I think that's where nowadays I think it's hard.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I think if I came into it now trying to do videos, I would I don't know, I'd be depressed because I know how long it takes to get to creating these things.
- 8:42Speaker 2: But also technology now makes it so much easier let's talk, bro.
- 8:49Speaker 1: You're bringing so many good points, like I got a list of questions on the laptop, like I ain't even gonna listen to that, because the way, the way you bring stuff up, it, just it naturally progresses the conversation, and so you talk about this.
- 9:01Speaker 1: It's almost a theme of self-forgiveness when I hear you talk about you didn't know nothing, you didn't know what was right, you didn't know what was wrong, you was just out there.
- 9:10Speaker 1: And now we are in a day and time where there is so much media being crashed, it's so much information.
- 9:18Speaker 1: That's something that I quite transparently struggle with from time to time is the paralysis of analysis.
- 9:24Speaker 1: It's like so much info.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Like dang, do I do this?
- 9:27Speaker 1: Wait?
- 9:27Speaker 1: They said, instead of releasing the album, you should release a single.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Oh, snap, you gotta cut your hair a certain way.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Oh, and so for you.
- 9:34Speaker 1: You know, when you came up you were like, yeah, if I was doing it now, I don't know if it'll be the same, because it's just so.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Talk about that going from starting at a time where maybe media consumption wasn't as vast as it is now, and then you're creating, still like you were creating then, and you're still creating.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Talk about what, what you've seen change and how that's affected your process uh, yeah, man.
- 9:57Speaker 2: So back then, like we were talking about, as far as creating, the way I like to create was in order to practice, I know I had a reality is going to be my only source of content to practice with, right, so that's where I took every moment I could to capture the moment and that's what I'm creating with and just practicing with and searching on youtube and trying to figure out things.
- 10:18Speaker 2: There was, you know, five or six creators back then that would tell you how to like do certain tricks and things.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Uh, we talked 10 or so years ago, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:29Speaker 2: So you, so you gotta think even youtube's only what?
- 10:31Speaker 2: 20 years old, like it's not even you know it's changed so much.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Yeah, but even at the time, once I found out how to, I found some russian kid I called him Russian kid online that had how to download free Sony Vegas.
- 10:46Speaker 2: So I did that.
- 10:47Speaker 2: So I found and researched everything I could find for free.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Yep, right, and I think that's what I love about this whole game of it is that you can find what you want if you take the time to search for it.
- 10:57Speaker 2: You can find free and download, but I mean it was really no one to watch.
- 11:02Speaker 2: That's what I wanted to do, so I just went and did it, cause everybody else is making movies and they're setting sets, but it was like I just want to learn how to put together a story of these scenes.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, but nowadays I mean in my feed so many people are telling me so many different things.
- 11:19Speaker 2: What the post.
- 11:19Speaker 2: What you need to have a hook.
- 11:21Speaker 2: You need to do this, and what I dislike about the current status of video is that no one's creating and this is the same as music no one's creating for their own personal visual effect, to let their art out there, right?
- 11:35Speaker 2: So even to this day, if you go down my page, I don't have any text all on it, because every video I'm making, I'm anticipating it to be forever.
- 11:44Speaker 2: That I can pull it back up later, yeah, that you can go 20 years from now and say, hey, I can pull it back up, and it's not going to be a bunch of like text on it of like whatever 10 top reasons to do this, right let's talk about that.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Yeah, so today I had a conversation with a producer that I work with.
- 11:59Speaker 1: I said I got to double down on my content and optimize it according to what nowadays is going to leverage that content.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Like tech, I'm like you I don't got no text hooks on my videos.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Some videos don't even got captions because it throws off the look of how we shot it, right so?
- 12:16Speaker 1: But I saw a stat literally today that said there was this creator that his videos went from the hundreds to the millions of literally the same videos.
- 12:28Speaker 1: We went from 500 to a million views just by adding a text to the same video.
- 12:34Speaker 2: The same video, same just, and make it shorter.
- 12:36Speaker 2: And text, just the text on the okay.
- 12:39Speaker 1: So you, being a creator who knows that, how do you say I know that this could be better as far as visibility, but I'm gonna stay true to my style and sacrifice that?
- 12:49Speaker 1: Like, how do you make that decision?
- 12:50Speaker 1: What?
- 12:51Speaker 1: What goes into that?
- 12:53Speaker 2: having multiple channels honestly, it's a reason I have multiple channels is a creative outlet, because if I had one channel, two channels and I, I gotta strategically play the game because I like only got x amount of views, I only got a shot to do it.
- 13:11Speaker 2: So you got to play the game of like I got to get your attention first and then hopefully I can sell you.
- 13:16Speaker 2: And so for me it was over the few years I started um realizing and a lot of it started back in the fashion week when I first filmed that it's like there's a niche for everybody, right.
- 13:31Speaker 2: And so for me, being a videographer, if I go film a wedding, if I post it on my wedding page, on my page, everyone thinks I'm doing wedding right.
- 13:41Speaker 2: And this is why I even started doing fashion.
- 13:43Speaker 2: I started doing fashion, loved fashion, but I was was weird.
- 13:46Speaker 2: I didn't want anybody to know I was doing fat, I didn't want people to think because I do so much more and even sports, I was like, let me create these channels to post my content too.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and so they became a habit from doing that and that's why I have multiple channels, because it's just a way for me to release my wedding, my, my sports.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Like the sports channel I have here, I want to share 20 videos.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Right, I can't share 20 videos on JTNashVegas, but I can go share 20 videos today on my sports channel and I won't care.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Yeah, right, it's that release.
- 14:16Speaker 2: So you diversify the outlets, yeah, yeah, and have multiple.
- 14:23Speaker 2: So I realized, all right, cool, if I can have 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, and each of these 5,000 like what they're watching on those pages and they're all connecting.
- 14:32Speaker 2: That's why you see me pop up so many times, because you may be following three or four different pages and they say that, statistically, your followers are only seeing like 5%, maybe, maybe, right, yeah, only seen like 5% of you.
- 14:46Speaker 2: And it gets annoying because I may see something of you, but it's late.
- 14:47Speaker 2: It shows up late on my feed.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Even the last time you did a show like oh, and it was on, it was a different channel, right?
- 14:54Speaker 2: So, depending on how we communicate, which channel you're gonna show up on my feed, but it was like a day late.
- 15:00Speaker 2: It popped up and I was like man, I would've went to that event but I didn't know about it.
- 15:05Speaker 2: So it was this thing of like well, let me just have these multiple channels like a TV station, and then they all connect to each other.
- 15:13Speaker 2: You can follow what you want to, and that way I have a better chance of showing up in your feed.
- 15:17Speaker 2: And even then my game is different too, because I'm not right now trying to sell anything, I'm just trying to show up.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Enough that I'm the videographer that you know.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Yup, so when you need someone, you call me you know, what I'm saying.
- 15:30Speaker 2: So it's a different hack, cause even an artist you have, you can't have a lot of pages, right?
- 15:37Speaker 2: And I mean, like, for me, my passion for working with artists like you is like I think we talked before.
- 15:41Speaker 2: It's like let's create another show to help drive it to that to your page.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Because, yeah, it's tough because you're limited, right, because if you put five videos up a day, you may lose people, right, and it's annoying, right, and your music's better than the ones that are out there.
- 16:00Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 16:01Speaker 2: So I think it comes down really to just I don't know If we're all playing the game.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Here's what I like to look at it.
- 16:08Speaker 2: You make the post and you play the game.
- 16:13Speaker 2: You put the text on it.
- 16:14Speaker 2: You get how many extra views?
- 16:18Speaker 2: A thousand more views is good.
- 16:19Speaker 2: What does that do?
- 16:21Speaker 2: What does it do If you watch anyone that scrolls on instagram, whatever like that content?
- 16:29Speaker 2: You make it by putting text on it.
- 16:31Speaker 2: You're saying this is done, this is done after 24, 48 hours.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Really, yeah, you get your pop and you can get followers, but it depends on what content you're doing, and for me, it was like then I'm lucky, because for me, I realized, moving here, I just need to be popular here, right, and I mean, personally, I just need like, I just need to be popular here Like.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Everyone else is trying to get millions of followers from all over the world, but I don't like you just need to own the niche.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Yeah, because if I had, if I had a million followers right now, the only thing would be cool about it that everybody I met would be excited.
- 17:09Speaker 2: They'd be excited.
- 17:11Speaker 2: That that would be.
- 17:12Speaker 2: The blessing to me is if I had a million followers is that?
- 17:15Speaker 2: I know that these kids I go to, they would be excited.
- 17:18Speaker 2: They don't have to know what content I have and I've seen it in person.
- 17:22Speaker 2: They don't care, they don't even know.
- 17:23Speaker 2: It's like oh, that's just something about that number, that's like oh man, he's on, he's, you know, and it's just like but it for me it wouldn't do anything, because if someone in california calls and asks for video, they should put like I'm last on the list because I'm here and there's other ones out there and so I just basically humbled down, got over the ego side of what I love.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Even so, I battle because I shoot.
- 17:48Speaker 2: I've shot so many productions and commercials and things like that, but no one cares anymore.
- 17:54Speaker 2: I know it.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Like I can't even I have a channel that I'm trying to create to show those.
- 17:59Speaker 2: But I can show you a cool commercial we did spend a lot of money on and blah, blah, but no one cares.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Like no one cares.
- 18:08Speaker 2: That's why, and that's why I move as much as I do and post when I do that, it's like 1130 at night.
- 18:13Speaker 2: I'm sitting there, I battled, I was like man I said to this video, but algorithm, no one's gonna see it, it's not going to these views.
- 18:24Speaker 2: But then it's like no one cares, like really like they, they care what, they don't care.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Like whatever you do, it's not going to mess up what you're heading to, right, right, and I think that for me, every time I do something, I'm testing and posting and just seeing what works yeah you know, fan, and that's what it kind of comes down to on a level.
- 18:39Speaker 2: If you're a creator, you can't care you know it's interesting.
- 18:44Speaker 1: I, I agree with that.
- 18:45Speaker 1: It's interesting because I'm somebody who cares you know what I mean.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Like I'm, I'm thoughtful and meticulous with everything that I do and I do think that there is a level of intentionality that you have to have because you're in the industry too, because I'm an artist, you know, and I'm and I'm in the industry to some degree, but even to your point at some point.
- 19:03Speaker 1: It's just content people gonna scroll right past if they, if they like it, they'll literally physically like it, maybe save it and come back to maybe, yeah, maybe, yeah, but they're gonna scroll right past.
- 19:14Speaker 1: You know it's people that don't even look at the, the video, no more.
- 19:18Speaker 1: But because they know their favorite artists post it up like I'm gone, like you don't watch my daughter.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Today I sent her a video.
- 19:25Speaker 2: He was something like it's a funny thing about and I rarely watch videos because I'm sort of looking for ideas but it was a cool video and I sent it to my daughter and I watched how she liked it before she watched.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I got on to her.
- 19:38Speaker 2: I like forgive me, but I was like whoa, now you liking it before you?
- 19:44Speaker 2: She said, but you sent it to me, you didn't even watch it.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I'm not mad you liking something I sent you, but you don't even care to watch it and they don't.
- 19:55Speaker 2: So if you watch, people scroll before you got off a plane, just sit and watch people.
- 19:58Speaker 2: And that's when I realized all this time we spend thinking on what, what to post, if it's right or not, it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter.
- 20:06Speaker 2: It doesn't matter because, like you got to go on to the next thing and the only thing that matters is if you show up enough, enough people will follow you and care for you and good things will happen.
- 20:14Speaker 2: If you just show up enough, good things will happen.
- 20:17Speaker 2: That's what it kind of comes down to right and even stay into, staying to your brand.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Because here's the thing, here's my thought on it.
- 20:24Speaker 2: If you follow the trends and create what everybody else is creating, like you just said it, no one's going to pay it.
- 20:29Speaker 2: No, it's not going to stand out, it's not.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Everyone follows the same.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Hey, so-and-so, that's from Change Attire.
- 20:36Speaker 2: But no, I don't change attire.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Okay, we got it, we've seen, we've seen it right and and those are fun for the creators because they're fun and they get to play a lot.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Well then it.
- 20:48Speaker 2: But it's not like what's the?
- 20:49Speaker 2: What was the point?
- 20:50Speaker 1: of here.
- 20:50Speaker 1: What was the point of?
- 20:51Speaker 2: so it's a thing of whatever you want to do, do it and don't care, because there's no end result.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Even if you post a video got 10 000 views tomorrow, that's what's gonna matter.
- 21:01Speaker 2: What's gonna change in your life.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Yeah, like you know, the the goal is to keep posting.
- 21:08Speaker 2: If you start posting when you don't care, those videos actually do the best.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Once you just post and don't care about um, but have some intentional behind it, right?
- 21:16Speaker 2: Especially being an artist having your music constantly playing, showing up, just being able to send that to the people when you want something, right?
- 21:24Speaker 2: So that's where the game I'm playing is kind of like.
- 21:27Speaker 2: I'm making all these videos and it doesn't matter if I get 1,000 views, 10,000 views or whatever.
- 21:31Speaker 2: My whole goal is that if I want to work with Melting Pot, I hope I have enough whatever that they'll at least talk to me.
- 21:43Speaker 2: You know, what I'm saying and I've made enough connections or things like that, and that's just a small example as far as why we're creating what we're creating.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Melton Pot.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Y'all gotta lock in with my boy, jt.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Now.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Every camera in Hollywood.
- 21:54Speaker 1: All right, this is my last question for you.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Give me.
- 21:58Speaker 1: This has been great bro.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, know, I love this.
- 22:03Speaker 1: I appreciate the wisdom and the insight and there's just so many gems, even as I hear you talk about um, show up and don't care, because, at the end of the day, in grand scheme, is just another deposit that you're making and I will say on that, you know it sounds easier.
- 22:14Speaker 2: And I tell my daughter this come turn to send this.
- 22:16Speaker 2: It was a training.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Like I had to train myself, like I there's been so many times I've been in an event that I was gonna crash.
- 22:23Speaker 2: I sit in the car like man, no, I'm gonna go, like I'm not going in there, especially me going in, like like just going in, and I'm just like five, four, three, just do it.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Mel robbins, take me guys like just do it, just do it, I'll go in and do it and good things always happen, but it but it was literally training, so don't get down on.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I guess I don't.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I'm saying this as far as don't get down.
- 22:46Speaker 2: If you're not doing it, it won't happen automatically, but you got to slowly make yourself be uncomfortable in order to go to the next step.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Because right now there's so many people out there I've met that have bought gimbals and have bought all this stuff, right, yeah, but they're only going to use it on the one time that they're going to go shoot that one video.
- 23:04Speaker 2: They're not out there using it all the time because they're worried about what they look like and not already being on the next level.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Everybody I meet is like oh man, I'm not as good as you, but it's all subjective.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Even my videos, they're all subjective, right.
- 23:21Speaker 2: There's tons of videos I love, like Real Estate, watson Media, polari Boys they be killing.
- 23:26Speaker 2: I love their videos, right, and it's subjective right, because people love my videos.
- 23:33Speaker 2: But I'm fans of everybody else, right, you know what I'm saying and people say I saw your videos and even you contact me out Like, and even you contact me out like this is cool, dude, like this is cool, because you know, all the times I'm posting and making videos, I feel like no one's watching, mm-hmm, because I don't care, but I do in a weird way yeah, right like I'd share.
- 23:54Speaker 2: We got in this and also the videos I'm making there for everybody else, because if they weren't, I'd be more in them.
- 24:00Speaker 2: But it's kind of like when I'm making a video and editing it, I'm like how are they gonna?
- 24:05Speaker 2: How are this person gonna feel about it?
- 24:08Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying.
- 24:08Speaker 1: That's the surprise.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Give me your five content creator commandments.
- 24:17Speaker 1: What do you mean?
- 24:19Speaker 1: These are your, the five things that you say if you want to create content, if you want to build something from scratch.
- 24:27Speaker 1: This person was you 10 years ago, 15 years ago, taking that camera to the farmer's market for the first time, afraid to post on social because of what people think.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Like.
- 24:37Speaker 1: What are the five things you could say to that person out there that wants to get started?
- 24:42Speaker 2: Oh, number one is create a separate artist account.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Yeah, that what's they call it.
- 24:51Speaker 2: When you're writing pen name or something, make it something a hobby or whatever.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Make it something that you're not really attached to.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Yeah, that will allow you to make something and post without showing it on your page or your feed.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Are you feeling attached to it?
- 25:05Speaker 2: Because you don't.
- 25:07Speaker 2: You know it's not your best work, because you're just getting started.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Yeah, and you don't want people to judge you off of it.
- 25:12Speaker 2: That's the hardest thing about it.
- 25:13Speaker 2: That's why I say you know, make an account that you can release your creativity on.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Okay, watch, it's not about I don't want to say it's not about the gear.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Yeah, so somehow educate yourself on shooting with your phone first.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Okay, this is going to be kind of hard, because I learned from cinematic cameras, so I think I'm better at the phone.
- 25:39Speaker 2: But I think don't buy gear until you're already doing what you're doing and the gear is going to help you do it better.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Right?
- 25:47Speaker 2: That's the thing I know.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Some people don't buy the gear because they oh, I watch this, I need to get this camera and then I'm gonna start doing it it never happens yeah, it never happens, right.
- 25:55Speaker 2: So, whatever you're thinking about doing, they say you want to do a podcast, do a show, do it with your phone.
- 26:01Speaker 2: First you hear, and then it's like man, I wish I had a camera here.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Then go get that camera right, because then you know how to what you're going to use it for you're at a separate page.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Start with what you got yeah um.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Five might be a stretch if it's only three days uh, be get used to being uncomfortable.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Put yourself and put yourself in uncomfortable scenarios or situations, and uncomfortable for creators is filming in public.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Honestly, just filming in public.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Even to this day I have an issue.
- 26:36Speaker 2: I'll practice and I've told my daughters this I'll just walk around.
- 26:39Speaker 2: I'm not even filming, but I'm walking around like I'm filming just to realize no one cares.
- 26:46Speaker 1: That's it, you can flex that muscle.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 26:48Speaker 2: No one cares.
- 26:49Speaker 2: You just walk around and just yeah, and no one cares.
- 26:52Speaker 2: That's good.
- 26:53Speaker 2: So what was that?
- 26:54Speaker 2: What do we call that one?
- 26:55Speaker 1: So get comfortable being uncomfortable.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:58Speaker 2: I think another one is something about networking or whatever you're creating, make sure you're creating for the right reason.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Yeah, right, and that meaning if you're creating something because you saw something you want to go viral, that's the wrong reason, right?
- 27:18Speaker 2: It's just this because you're going to spend too much time on it, yeah, and it's never going to get the results that you want.
- 27:24Speaker 2: And even then weigh out the results.
- 27:26Speaker 2: When you get those results, what's going to happen?
- 27:28Speaker 2: Right, because then you got to come up to show the next day and you're exhausted because you spent so much time.
- 27:33Speaker 2: So I think the tip is create videos without planning.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Okay, I think that's the tip.
- 27:41Speaker 2: I think that's it.
- 27:42Speaker 2: I think that because that's where going out and just shooting and filming is the way to do it, because if you plan so many things, you talk yourself out of things because you're like, oh, I need to get the light, I need to do this.
- 27:54Speaker 2: And then so-and-so wants things because you're like, oh, I need to get the light, I'm gonna do this, and so on.
- 27:59Speaker 2: So, once it comes, shoot but then there's worried about the script.
- 28:00Speaker 2: So all this planning kind of goes.
- 28:02Speaker 2: And then, uh, number five, the five.
- 28:05Speaker 1: That's good.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Um, so we got um.
- 28:08Speaker 1: The first one.
- 28:10Speaker 1: You said create a separate page.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Yep, start with what you got, don't?
- 28:14Speaker 1: You don't got to get that new camera?
- 28:15Speaker 1: Start with your iPhone.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Get comfortable being uncomfortable.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Just create and build relationships and building relationships by giving without expectation, and those relationships come back many years down the way.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Most won't know it or stay in the game long enough to realize that, but I mean even jobs that I got.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Now it was two or three years ago I first made contact right.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Or two or three years ago they saw a video, yeah, right, yeah.
- 28:50Speaker 2: And then they get in that position.
- 28:51Speaker 2: It's like, hey, I'm now the manager here and we need video content.
- 28:55Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I'm saying, but it's just staying in that game and it all came from me showing up at that one event and just shooting content and posting it and not trying to do that transactional thing.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Right, because the money will come eventually.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Yeah, but I mean it's a tough game out there when everybody's doing and everybody can do it on their own.
- 29:16Speaker 2: It's just what value you can provide to make them hire you to do it Right.
- 29:19Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying and for me my value has become visibility, organic reach, yeah, right, and that's kind of where I think everybody can get to that level and you have to have a passion for it.
- 29:32Speaker 2: So I think that, out of the five, make sure you have a passion for it, because the only way to do this and you know, with music is you're going to be up late at night, you're going to not want to go on vacation because you want to do what you're doing, like that's yeah, that's the thing.
- 29:53Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 29:53Speaker 2: So I think, yeah, I think, just do it, man.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Nike said it, just do it.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Quit watching YouTube, quit watching.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Oh sorry, I guess everybody's watching TikTok and Instagram.
- 30:03Speaker 2: So my message is quit watching TikTok videos.
- 30:06Speaker 2: About making videos and just go make one.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Just go make one and post it.
- 30:11Speaker 2: No one cares.
- 30:12Speaker 2: No one cares.
- 30:13Speaker 2: No one's ever gonna be like dude, bad video.
- 30:15Speaker 2: I'm not gonna unfollow you, that doesn't happen.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Like, and nowadays everybody gets seen just for posting regardless.
- 30:21Speaker 2: The reach is crazy because it's not only your followers, but you post a video.
- 30:26Speaker 2: You get thousand views from people you don't even know.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Right, but you gotta show up the next day.
- 30:30Speaker 2: So, whatever it is, you do make sure you can repeat it.
- 30:33Speaker 2: So, whatever it is, you do make sure you can repeat it and you enjoy doing it or you'll stop.
- 30:37Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what it comes down to, because I've only been in music, oh gosh.
- 30:43Speaker 1: I recorded my first song when I was 12.
- 30:45Speaker 1: That's over 20 years ago.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Yeah, what did you record it on?
- 30:49Speaker 1: Oh, I was in the studio.
- 30:51Speaker 1: So my uncle was a musician, it's okay.
- 30:52Speaker 1: I got to actually you know what I mean.
- 30:55Speaker 1: And then I went to college and started recording my own music in 2012.
- 30:59Speaker 1: And then released my first album in 2017.
- 31:01Speaker 1: So, needless to say, it been a minute just kind of in that journey, like you said, learning and figuring it out and realizing you're the only one that cares.
- 31:10Speaker 1: That's why he cares as much as I care, and I gotta show up.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I could put out the most fire project in the world and I got to show up tomorrow.
- 31:19Speaker 2: And I think we were talking about it at the very beginning.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Information is good and bad nowadays.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Oh yeah, and that's what we're talking about.
- 31:25Speaker 2: I mean, I'll say the one person I watch and I tell people that changed my life, gary Vee, for one, as he mentions a lot of things of like just do it, knowing I get that, don't care stuff because he talks about just try it out If you make a bad post, like there's so much other stuff going on right.
- 31:44Speaker 2: And then Casey Neistat he was the one that gave me, I guess, the vision of being able to take random daily content and being able to tell a story.
- 31:55Speaker 2: So for me, I have this passion I challenge myself of, like you said before, taking reality and trying to turn that into something that's watchable.
- 32:04Speaker 2: You're good at that, yeah, you know, and I've been.
- 32:06Speaker 2: It comes from practice because it's like every day I would do that right, and I think a lot of people that are creating they wait till they have that certain job or moment to shoot and there's so much pressure on it and things go wrong on set and yeah, and you don't know what, yeah, you just.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Then they get out of it's just too much pressure, then you get out of it later.
- 32:28Speaker 2: So I think, um, just do it, just go, just go, and yeah, no one cares and you're not gonna.
- 32:37Speaker 2: Don't have any expectations.
- 32:39Speaker 2: I hate that.
- 32:40Speaker 2: I'm not crushing anybody's dream.
- 32:41Speaker 2: I mean, I have expectations of me and it's like I know at some point I'm gonna be happy with just being me.
- 32:48Speaker 2: I'm already happy now.
- 32:49Speaker 2: I have the best life, been able to meet so many people just through video.
- 32:52Speaker 2: But I think, man, some people wanna do video and so many people are good at it.
- 32:56Speaker 2: But they're good at it, they just want to be seen.
- 32:59Speaker 2: That's what I was saying with the whole we talked before, the whole music thing.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Everybody just wants to get views, but no one wants to get paid attention to Right, and I think that's where it's kind of like do your own thing and it'll come.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Do your own thing and the right people will find you, cause if you're doing what everybody else is doing, they'll see you.
- 33:17Speaker 2: But yeah, yeah, but yeah, that's yeah.
- 33:25Speaker 2: That's all I did.
- 33:26Speaker 2: I guess Got any more questions.
- 33:27Speaker 2: This is fun, man, that's it.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Man, you crushed it.
- 33:31Speaker 1: You left me with so much to chew on.
- 33:32Speaker 1: I'm just like to just you know.
- 33:35Speaker 2: And that's why I've always been attracted to you as far as an artist and just the way you carry yourself, style and everything and what you do and you have the sense of everybody gets along with you when you're in the room and it's like you're better than half the people out here.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Like how do you break Right, how do you get people to pay attention?
- 33:56Speaker 2: And it's I don't know.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Yeah, what sucks is like you got to make bad video.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Yeah, you got to make bad content and in order to break the mold, it feels like right or do yeah, like you said, add text all over it and for five second clips.
- 34:12Speaker 2: That's what.
- 34:12Speaker 2: That's what bothers me.
- 34:14Speaker 2: These videos are just like six seconds, eight seconds and it's just like no one's entertaining more.
- 34:19Speaker 2: But I think the platform is going to change.
- 34:20Speaker 2: I think that things are going to happen to where it's going to come back to.
- 34:23Speaker 2: We're not going to be just trying to get views with hooks and short things.
- 34:28Speaker 2: It's going to come back to the thing of where we're watching videos, right, watching stuff.
- 34:32Speaker 2: I remember when I was doing music man I used to love just watching.
- 34:36Speaker 2: The new music video releases came out.
- 34:38Speaker 2: My daughter said they might've seen five videos in their whole life.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Yeah, literally Like how do you?
- 34:45Speaker 2: And then now, even if they hear a song that they like, I ask them who's the artist?
- 34:50Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't know.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:53Speaker 2: That's what I do with artists Like man.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Y'all have it tough because even you, you can have a hot song out there and they might even know your name, literally that's that word.
- 35:03Speaker 1: It's a new day.
- 35:04Speaker 1: That's for part two.
- 35:05Speaker 1: We're going to get them down on part two.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Man, jt, appreciate you sitting down with us.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Man, super, super grateful for all the gems that you, uh, that you share with us and, uh, we're gonna get you to another podcast.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Cool love, dude.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Thank you, appreciate it, brother.
