Latest / The Monégasque Table / How Much Edible Glitter Is Too Much? A Serving-Size Answer
Transcript
- Dana: Ask the Table time. This one shows up in the mailbag every week, usually from someone standing over their first batch of sparkly cupcakes: how much edible glitter is too much? Is there a line? Where is it? Margaux: Welcome to The Monégasque Table. That's exactly the right thing to wonder before you feed anyone something shiny — you're right to check what's in the jar and how much of it ends up on the plate. Dana: Right. And I'll be honest — "sprinkle away, there's no limit" is exactly what a glitter company would say. Margaux: Which is why that's not the answer. Here's the answer up front. Used as decoration — a pinch — you'll run out of drink long before you run into a limit. The serving guidance is 0.1 grams per drink. Double it for a richer color and you're still at a fraction of a gram. And the ceiling isn't ours. Regulators wrote one down. Dana: Okay, give me the ceiling. Because "trust us" isn't a number. Margaux: It's a federal rule with a number in it. The FDA lists mica-based pearlescent pigments — the shimmer base this glitter is built on — as a color additive, in a regulation called 21 CFR 73.350. That rule caps the pigment at 1.25% of the weight of the food it goes into. Not banned, not unlimited — a concentration cap, written like a recipe rule. Dana: And a pinch floating in a whole glass of liquid is... nowhere near 1.25% of that drink. Margaux: Nowhere near. You'd have to shovel it in by the spoonful, and the drink would look like wet cement long before the math got interesting. In practice the look gives out first — shimmer reads as magic, sludge reads as a mistake. Dana: Here's what still bugs me, though. If you genuinely can't overdo it, why does a cap exist at all? Caps exist for a reason. Margaux: That's the round you win, and it's the whole point of the episode. Edible doesn't mean unlimited. Salt is food; salt still has a sensible amount. Every color additive on the FDA's list gets its own lane, and glitter's lane is decoration-sized amounts — which is exactly how anyone uses it. Dana: Now do the mom scenario. The jar tips over. A kid treats it like sprinkles. How scared should I be? Margaux: Here's the precise version, from the safety paperwork. The safety data sheets for these pigments state that significant systemic toxicity from ingestion is unlikely. That's about eating it — the route that actually matters at your table. And here's what I won't do. Some corners of the internet wave a lab toxicity figure around as if it were a safe daily amount of glitter. That figure comes from a different kind of testing, and treating it as an eating allowance is junk math. It gets no airtime here. Dana: (laughs) You just talked me out of wanting a bigger number. Margaux: The honest ceiling is boring. Boring is what you want near food. Dana: So who should skip glitter completely? Because zero is also an amount. Margaux: Zero is a fine amount. If a doctor has you — or your kid — avoiding color additives, the right amount of glitter is none — no party trick outranks medical advice. Same if you just don't want additives in your food. Glitter is optional by definition; skip it with a clear conscience. Dana: And for everyone else — the practical number, one more time. Margaux: A pinch. 0.1 grams per drink, so a 10 gram jar pours about 100 servings. Want a richer color, double it — the listing says so. Past that you're not adding sparkle, you're clouding the glass. One pinch, one stir, and the glass catches the light right as it lands in front of the kid at the table. A little goes a long way isn't a slogan; it's the instruction. Dana: So "how much is too much" really comes down to: your eyes give out long before anything else matters. Margaux: And the regulation backs your eyes up. If you want the jar with that guidance printed right on the listing, the MONÉGASQUE Iconic Gold 10 gram drink glitter is on Amazon — flake-style, built to stay visible in the glass. Dana: Next time on Ask the Table — a question I once typed in a checkout line: which edible glitter colors should you buy first? Margaux: Gold has competition, and the numbers have opinions. This show is made with AI-crafted hosts and human-checked facts. See you at the table.
