- 1:01Speaker 1: how to find and call and decoy highly pressured turkeys,
- 1:05Speaker 1: something that's applicable in many parts of the country. We
- 1:08Speaker 1: talked through tips for getting quiet birds to gobble, what
- 1:11Speaker 1: to do if you spook a gobbler, how to break,
- 1:14Speaker 1: a hung up bird, and a whole lot more. Uh.

- 1:55Speaker 1: people on the team and other folks out there are
- 1:58Speaker 1: sharing their turkey hunting insights with really great articles. We're
- 2:01Speaker 1: gonna see topics such as, oh gosh um, how to
- 2:06Speaker 1: how to hunt roosted towns, how to stock turkeys, how
- 2:09Speaker 1: to uh deal with turkeys that they aren't talking, how
- 2:13Speaker 1: to make your decoys more realistic, a whole slet of
- 2:15Speaker 1: different things, dozens and dozens of new articles. If you
- 2:18Speaker 1: want to learn more after listening to this, that's how
- 2:21Speaker 1: to do it, heading over to the meat eater dot com.
- 2:25Speaker 1: There's also a lot of great turkey recipes because I'm
- 2:27Speaker 1: counting on all of you filling those turkey tags, so
- 2:30Speaker 1: you're gonna need to eat them too. We can help
- 2:32Speaker 1: you on that front as well. So that's all from
- 2:35Speaker 1: me without further ado, let's get to some turkey talk
- 2:39Speaker 1: with Lake Pickle. Alright with me on the line now
- 2:44Speaker 1: is Lake Pickle Lake, Thanks for doing this. How are you, man?
- 2:48Speaker 1: I'm doing great. Thank you for having me on its owner. Hey,
- 2:51Speaker 1: I uh, I'm stoked that we can chat turkeys right
- 2:54Speaker 1: now because a lot of people are stuck inside or
- 2:59Speaker 1: stuck at home and not able to go do some
- 3:01Speaker 1: fun things. But but turkey hunting is one of those
- 3:04Speaker 1: options that most of us have to go out and
- 3:06Speaker 1: enjoy ourselves right now. So this is a this is
- 3:08Speaker 1: a great thing to be talking about. Absolutely, it's it's
- 3:11Speaker 1: one of my favorite things to talk about, regardless of
- 3:14Speaker 1: the time of year, what's going on. But yeah, with
- 3:16Speaker 1: everything going on right now and the last folks being
- 3:18Speaker 1: stuck inside. It's it's people are more appreciative of turkey
- 3:22Speaker 1: hunting than normal, I feel like, which is the way
- 3:23Speaker 1: it should be. Oh yeah, I was just driving home
- 3:27Speaker 1: from the grocery store a little bit ago, and in
- 3:29Speaker 1: my head I was kind of complaining to myself that
- 3:32Speaker 1: I I can't go hunt anywhere else. I'm kind of
- 3:35Speaker 1: gotta stay here in Michigan and we only get one tag,
- 3:38Speaker 1: so I basically, you know, could end my turkey season
- 3:41Speaker 1: in one day. Now sitting there thinking how disappointing that is.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And usually in a lot of other years, I would
- 3:46Speaker 1: go and kind of guide for a bunch of friends,
- 3:48Speaker 1: take them out, call for um, you know, just do
- 3:50Speaker 1: that with as many buddies as you can to kind
- 3:52Speaker 1: of lengthen your season. But now maybe we shouldn't be
- 3:54Speaker 1: doing that. I don't know. So it's such a strange time, man, Yeah,
- 3:59Speaker 1: it is. It is. So I started thinking, I think
- 4:03Speaker 1: what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna set a goal
- 4:06Speaker 1: of getting quote unquote getting five turkeys for myself in
- 4:11Speaker 1: Michigan this year. And when I say getting, I'm not
- 4:13Speaker 1: actually gonna illegally shoot more birds than I'm allowed. I'm
- 4:16Speaker 1: going to see if I can get five gobblers within
- 4:20Speaker 1: forty yards and and you know, take a picture or something,
- 4:23Speaker 1: and that'll be like that fun thing is try to
- 4:25Speaker 1: call one into range and no, I could have got it.
- 4:28Speaker 1: And so I'm gonna hunt without needing to pull the trigger.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I'll get my one bird, and then I'm just gonna
- 4:33Speaker 1: keep on getting after just to enjoy it, you know. Yeah.
- 4:37Speaker 1: And I mean, like I said, and then the circumstances
- 4:40Speaker 1: that everyone's kind of set with right now, I get
- 4:42Speaker 1: where you're coming from. There's you still gotta find some
- 4:44Speaker 1: way to enjoy the spring as much as you can.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I understand exactly. So I'm particularly excited to kind of
- 4:51Speaker 1: pick your brain because you are doing a ton of
- 4:53Speaker 1: turkey hunting down in the part of the country that
- 4:55Speaker 1: I just don't get to enough. Um I if I'm right,
- 5:00Speaker 1: correct me if I'm wrong here, But I think I've
- 5:01Speaker 1: seen you've killed turkeys already this year in Alabama, Mississippi,
- 5:05Speaker 1: in Florida. Is that right, correct? Yes, sir, that is correct?
- 5:09Speaker 1: In And what are are you hunting many other states
- 5:11Speaker 1: this year? Or is that the extent of it? It's
- 5:14Speaker 1: kind of up in the air. We would like to
- 5:17Speaker 1: but it's just you know, usually with what we do
- 5:19Speaker 1: with with primos, we we chase spring all over you know.
- 5:23Speaker 1: But um, we've already lost some trips because of the
- 5:25Speaker 1: Corona thing, like we touched on earlier. Um, and that's honestly,
- 5:30Speaker 1: I've hunted. I've got to hunt more in my home
- 5:31Speaker 1: state of Mississippi this year than I have in years,
- 5:34Speaker 1: just because we're usually traveling so much. We may get
- 5:37Speaker 1: to make a few more trips later and later on
- 5:40Speaker 1: in in May if some of this stuff changes, um,
- 5:43Speaker 1: but as of right now, we're just kind of hunting
- 5:44Speaker 1: around the house. It's the safe thing to do, you know. Yeah,
- 5:48Speaker 1: how many tags do you guys get there? Three apiece,
- 5:51Speaker 1: three bird limit? Yeah, at least you've got some some opportunities.
- 5:55Speaker 1: So so we talked on Instagram, I think right at
- 6:00Speaker 1: on Instagram a little bit about what makes Southern turkey
- 6:04Speaker 1: hunting unique. And I think that's probably a good place
- 6:08Speaker 1: to start with this conversation too. Can you expand on
- 6:12Speaker 1: some of the things that you think make it different
- 6:14Speaker 1: down there than maybe what I'm experiencing in Michigan and
- 6:17Speaker 1: what folks out in Iowa or Nebraska maybe have got
- 6:20Speaker 1: going on sure. I think one of the biggest thing
- 6:25Speaker 1: that comes to my mind when you say what makes
- 6:28Speaker 1: Southern turkey hunting unique is I feel like there's a
- 6:33Speaker 1: bigger concentration of turkey hunters in the Southeast region than
- 6:37Speaker 1: there are anywhere else. So you're dealing with so much
- 6:41Speaker 1: more hunting pressure, and that has, you know, whether you
- 6:44Speaker 1: whether you like it or not. I mean I kind
- 6:46Speaker 1: of wish that it didn't sometimes, but you know, turkeys
- 6:49Speaker 1: respond very much the hunting pressure. You know, they get
- 6:51Speaker 1: called out a lot, they get walked under limbs and
- 6:54Speaker 1: flushed off limbs a lot, they get walked into a
- 6:57Speaker 1: lot when their goblin in person tries to get too close,
- 6:59Speaker 1: and they get flood and so you're a lot of times,
- 7:01Speaker 1: especially if you're hunting on public land, you're dealing with
- 7:04Speaker 1: birds that have been scared either by hunters or by predators,
- 7:08Speaker 1: because predation is also an issue we deal with a
- 7:10Speaker 1: lot down here. Um. I just I feel like overall,
- 7:14Speaker 1: you're you're dealing with turkeys that are a lot more wary,
- 7:18Speaker 1: I guess, or or trying to be trying to stay
- 7:21Speaker 1: on their toes a lot more just because they're so
- 7:22Speaker 1: scared of everything. Uh, so that that's probably like the
- 7:26Speaker 1: biggest difference. I would say, if I had to pick
- 7:29Speaker 1: just one, I'd say there's several, but the biggest one
- 7:31Speaker 1: is just dealing with hunting pressure. Yeah, So how do
- 7:34Speaker 1: you account for that? Like, I know, one of the
- 7:36Speaker 1: things you mentioned when we were talking earlier is is
- 7:39Speaker 1: focusing on a time frame different than when most guys
- 7:42Speaker 1: come out there. Maybe if you can expand on that
- 7:44Speaker 1: and and then anything else you do differently to just
- 7:47Speaker 1: deal with these real timid birds. Sure. Um. So the
- 7:51Speaker 1: best example that I have of that is, Uh, I
- 7:54Speaker 1: went to college. When I was in college, there was
- 7:57Speaker 1: a there was a big public piece of public ground
- 8:00Speaker 1: that you could get to from the town that I
- 8:02Speaker 1: went to college at at at Mississippi State. You could
- 8:05Speaker 1: drive there from from my apartment that I was living
- 8:08Speaker 1: in to be there listening to turkeys and twenty minutes
- 8:12Speaker 1: um and so. As you can imagine, every other student
- 8:16Speaker 1: that turkey hunted also hunted that same piece of public ground.
- 8:19Speaker 1: And so it was hammered with with pressure. And you know,
- 8:23Speaker 1: you had a lot of times you have you better
- 8:25Speaker 1: have five or six different spots that you could possibly
- 8:28Speaker 1: go in and hunt that you had scouted, because there's
- 8:30Speaker 1: a chance that if you try to, if you only
- 8:32Speaker 1: have one, you'd go there and there'd be some of us,
- 8:34Speaker 1: be someone there already. And uh, I learned over you know,
- 8:38Speaker 1: like I'm not the quickest learner in the world. Is
- 8:41Speaker 1: a lot of trial and error, but I learned that
- 8:44Speaker 1: a lot of those guys, whether they just were doing
- 8:47Speaker 1: it because they didn't know any better, or they had class,
- 8:50Speaker 1: a lot of those guys would get there, you know,
- 8:53Speaker 1: do the daybreak roost goblin thing, and they would hunt
- 8:55Speaker 1: until eight thirty nine o'clock and then they'd call it quits.
- 8:59Speaker 1: And you drive around that that same piece of public
- 9:02Speaker 1: ground that looked like, you know, the talladegas raceway in
- 9:06Speaker 1: the morning times, but you get there from ten am on,
- 9:11Speaker 1: you know, it's oftentimes would be a ghost town. And
- 9:13Speaker 1: so the first turkey that I ever killed out there,
- 9:17Speaker 1: I got out there probably around ten thirty. I just
- 9:20Speaker 1: went to a spot that I had scouted before the season,
- 9:22Speaker 1: and I had hunted some of the mornings, and I
- 9:24Speaker 1: knew that turkeys liked to be there. There were turkeys
- 9:26Speaker 1: in that area. And I sat down and UH just
- 9:30Speaker 1: was calling, you know, every five ten minutes, and I
- 9:34Speaker 1: think I've probably been there about thirty forty minutes and
- 9:36Speaker 1: one time I yelped and cut and a turkey answered me,
- 9:39Speaker 1: and probably twenty minutes later that turkey was dead. I mean,
- 9:42Speaker 1: it was just that quick. And I think those turkeys
- 9:45Speaker 1: get honestly, I think they get imprinted or or whatever
- 9:48Speaker 1: you want to call it, that they start to figure
- 9:51Speaker 1: out that, hey, from before daylight telling nine, there's a
- 9:56Speaker 1: lot of things. There's a lot of booger bears out
- 9:57Speaker 1: here chasing me, you know, but until then they're gone.
- 10:00Speaker 1: You know, I realized bugger bear is probably a funny term.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Excuse my red neck you know neck terminology. But but
- 10:06Speaker 1: I think that, you know, you would say, turkeys acting
- 10:09Speaker 1: a lot more like you want turkeys to act. And
- 10:13Speaker 1: when I say that, you know, goblin strutting the whole
- 10:15Speaker 1: nine yards. But they were a lot more laid back
- 10:18Speaker 1: and not just on pins and needles when you hunt
- 10:20Speaker 1: in those time frames when there's not as many people there. Um.
- 10:23Speaker 1: And that's that's the best example that I can give
- 10:25Speaker 1: of that. That's interesting. Do you do you do anything
- 10:29Speaker 1: differently once you're out there? Though, So when you did
- 10:31Speaker 1: that calling sequence and brought that burden or other times
- 10:34Speaker 1: when you're hunting pressure birds like that, do you call
- 10:36Speaker 1: any differently knowing that these turkeys have been buggered by
- 10:40Speaker 1: a bunch of other people. Do you decoy differently when
- 10:43Speaker 1: you know they've seen a bunch of other deeks anything
- 10:45Speaker 1: like that? Yeah, absolutely, absolutely, that's a good question. Um,
- 10:49Speaker 1: what you will learn or especially if you're out in
- 10:52Speaker 1: public A lot. I don't know what it is, but
- 10:55Speaker 1: there's so many guys they get I call it like
- 10:57Speaker 1: a I don't know if you call it a rut
- 10:59Speaker 1: or like a calling rud or they they sound like
- 11:01Speaker 1: a broken CD. Sometimes they'll just throw the same five
- 11:05Speaker 1: to eight yelp sequence over and over and over, you know,
- 11:08Speaker 1: just y'all, y'all, y'all, y'all, y'all, you know, and there's
- 11:11Speaker 1: no there's no changes, there's no difference in inflection. Or
- 11:14Speaker 1: maybe they they clucked twice and then yelp. But but
- 11:17Speaker 1: whatever it is, they yelped that, it's the same thing,
- 11:19Speaker 1: just over and over and over and Um, we've heard
- 11:22Speaker 1: this a thousand times. I'm not the first person to
- 11:24Speaker 1: say it. But if you listen to a hidd in Turkey,
- 11:27Speaker 1: a real hid in Turkey. They don't do that. You know,
- 11:30Speaker 1: they're they're very they have a lot of variation and
- 11:32Speaker 1: what they do. And so I started, you know, at first,
- 11:36Speaker 1: the first thing I did to try to change that
- 11:38Speaker 1: up is I was like, all right, I'm gonna yelp
- 11:40Speaker 1: only an odd number of times, Like instead of going
- 11:42Speaker 1: four times, you know, y'all, y'all, y'all, y'all, one to three, four,
- 11:45Speaker 1: I yelp three. You know, I was just trying to
- 11:47Speaker 1: make myself do something different, um, And I think it
- 11:50Speaker 1: made it. Honestly, I think it makes a difference. Just
- 11:53Speaker 1: I think it adds more realism, uh to what you're doing. Uh.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Decoy in if you're hunting somewhere like that place I
- 12:00Speaker 1: hunted where I was going to school. Often times, if
- 12:04Speaker 1: I'm hunting in timber, I won't even use a decoy. Um.
- 12:09Speaker 1: And if I'm open with a lot of timber, and
- 12:11Speaker 1: if I'm in open woods with a turkey can see
- 12:13Speaker 1: a long way, I'll put a decoy out just because
- 12:15Speaker 1: I wouldn't want them to get to a hundred eighty
- 12:18Speaker 1: yards and say I don't see a turkey, I'm gonna
- 12:20Speaker 1: turn around. This isn't right. But if I'm hunting in
- 12:22Speaker 1: somewhere that's kind of thicker timber and maybe some younger
- 12:25Speaker 1: stage timber. Uh. Often I won't use a decoy just
- 12:28Speaker 1: because again, like on that public ground, everyone has decoy
- 12:32Speaker 1: is thrown out, and I personally feel like they walk
- 12:35Speaker 1: up sometimes they go I've seen that before, and they
- 12:37Speaker 1: turn around and they leave. Yeah, it makes sense. It
- 12:41Speaker 1: makes a lot of sense. Do you talked about trying
- 12:44Speaker 1: to add some variation to your calling, and that's such
- 12:47Speaker 1: a good point. I realized I'm probably guilty of that
- 12:49Speaker 1: a lot. I've kind of have that track in my mind, like, Okay,
- 12:53Speaker 1: this is the sequence you do, this is how many
- 12:55Speaker 1: times you do it. I like your idea just simply
- 12:58Speaker 1: doing something as simple as changing the number. But I
- 13:01Speaker 1: gotta believe with with all experience you have and then
- 13:04Speaker 1: the guys that you're hanging out with at primost, there's
- 13:07Speaker 1: gotta be some interesting unique ways of calling. Are there
- 13:12Speaker 1: any other things you picked up over the years as
- 13:16Speaker 1: far as ways to just add variation to your calling
- 13:19Speaker 1: sequences or certain little runs or certain I don't know,
- 13:23Speaker 1: if you got tricks in the back pocket that you
- 13:25Speaker 1: pull out when things get tough, anything that comes. Yeah, absolutely,
- 13:29Speaker 1: uh the first one that comes to my mind. And
- 13:32Speaker 1: it's not like a this may not mean like the
- 13:35Speaker 1: most black and white instructional this is a trick, but
- 13:37Speaker 1: it's something I heard Wilberg say all the time, And
- 13:40Speaker 1: the first time I heard him say it, I was like,
- 13:42Speaker 1: I'm not sure what you're saying there. But over time
- 13:44Speaker 1: and just white and hunting with him, I kind of
- 13:46Speaker 1: figured it out. He always he always says, I'm painting
- 13:49Speaker 1: a picture. You know, I'm painting. I'm painting a picture.
- 13:51Speaker 1: He's trying to build a scenario for that turkey. You know,
- 13:56Speaker 1: he's trying to make him you know, and and it
- 13:57Speaker 1: you when you first time you hear, you're like, well,
- 13:59Speaker 1: that's yes, that's you know, you're trying to make him
- 14:01Speaker 1: think there's a hint over there, but you know it's
- 14:04Speaker 1: it will takes that to another level of detail. You know,
- 14:09Speaker 1: he's just not going there as a hen over there.
- 14:11Speaker 1: He's taking it to there's a hen over here. And
- 14:13Speaker 1: right now she's clucking in her and feeding around on
- 14:16Speaker 1: the ground. And now she's assembly helping because she wants
- 14:19Speaker 1: you to come up over here. Now she's cutting at
- 14:21Speaker 1: you because she's excited. Um. As far as just calling variation, again,
- 14:26Speaker 1: the best thing that I that I guess that you
- 14:29Speaker 1: don't hear a lot of people do, and I think
- 14:33Speaker 1: personally adds a ton of realism, is just adding clucks
- 14:36Speaker 1: or cuts into your yelps. You know a lot of
- 14:39Speaker 1: people will yelp and then they'll cut. They won't Yeah yeah,
- 14:42Speaker 1: gott y'all. Yeah, And you hear real hens or at
- 14:45Speaker 1: least down here. I hear hens do that a lot,
- 14:47Speaker 1: you know, not just cutting crazy like you like you
- 14:50Speaker 1: hear on the competition stage, but just yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 14:53Speaker 1: got that, y'all. Yeah, yeah, that kind of thing. Um
- 14:57Speaker 1: adds a lot of realism, I feel like, and I
- 14:59Speaker 1: hear I hear will do that a lot. I hear
- 15:01Speaker 1: Brad do that a lot. Uh. Troy is probably one
- 15:03Speaker 1: of the best I've heard of doing that on a
- 15:05Speaker 1: mouth call and sounding super realistic. But yeah, those are
- 15:09Speaker 1: some things. And like you said, from I've been pretty
- 15:12Speaker 1: spoiled as far as the caliber of Turkey hunters I've
- 15:15Speaker 1: been able to hang out with because I've I've been
- 15:16Speaker 1: able to learn a whole whole lot as you can imagine. Yeah,
- 15:20Speaker 1: you can't. I don't think you can find any better
- 15:21Speaker 1: mentors than that. No, So so let's keep talking calling um.
- 15:28Speaker 1: At the beginning of the day, one of the first
- 15:30Speaker 1: things people are looking at is trying to they hopefully
- 15:32Speaker 1: had a rooster bird, they get in there, they're set up.
- 15:36Speaker 1: There's always this temptation too, to call it birds on
- 15:40Speaker 1: the limb. What what's your take on how or if
- 15:44Speaker 1: you call two birds when they're still roosted. I will
- 15:48Speaker 1: do it um, depending on on the setup UM. And
- 15:52Speaker 1: then quite frankly, like because I can give you a
- 15:54Speaker 1: really good example of that, because like I was, I
- 15:56Speaker 1: was telling you um or. I don't know if I've
- 15:59Speaker 1: mentioned this before, but I was hunting this morning. I
- 16:01Speaker 1: was filming Jordan, who who we worked together at Promos,
- 16:04Speaker 1: and he actually shot a turkey this morning that we
- 16:08Speaker 1: got on him on the limb. And what we did
- 16:11Speaker 1: is basically, I mean we we were able to get
- 16:15Speaker 1: get in fairly tight to that turkey while he was
- 16:17Speaker 1: still roosted. We've probably got a hundred yards maybe anywhere
- 16:21Speaker 1: from a hundred to a hundred twenty yards while he
- 16:23Speaker 1: was still in the tree. And we were able to
- 16:25Speaker 1: do that because at this point in our season the woods.
- 16:29Speaker 1: You know, the spring foliage is pretty much all the
- 16:31Speaker 1: way out there, so you've got tons of cover where
- 16:33Speaker 1: it's like early season. You know, when we opened, like
- 16:35Speaker 1: March fifteen, if you were trying to sneak up on
- 16:37Speaker 1: a turkey that close to the limb, good chance you're
- 16:39Speaker 1: gonna spots you. But now with all the foliage on
- 16:41Speaker 1: the trees, we were able to get pretty tight. But um,
- 16:45Speaker 1: what we do often times were set up like that.
- 16:47Speaker 1: We will call to him. We'll do everyone knows the
- 16:50Speaker 1: term a tree up, you know, just a real soft,
- 16:52Speaker 1: hey I'm over here, kind of kind of a call,
- 16:54Speaker 1: just to barely even audible. Sometimes just roll um. And
- 17:00Speaker 1: that's usually it. I mean, we don't just keep hammering
- 17:03Speaker 1: at him because uh, the only other call we will
- 17:07Speaker 1: do is like a fly down cackle. Well, you know,
- 17:09Speaker 1: get the wing and fly down and as it like
- 17:13Speaker 1: a hen's do when they fly down. Uh. But then
- 17:16Speaker 1: you don't, I personally know, will not just keep yelping
- 17:19Speaker 1: at him. I mean, no one likes to hear a
- 17:22Speaker 1: turkey gobble more than I do. But uh, and it's
- 17:25Speaker 1: it's very tempted, but it's oh, it's it's I'm so
- 17:29Speaker 1: guilty of it. I've done it when I was just
- 17:31Speaker 1: started turkey on. There's no telling how many turkeys that
- 17:33Speaker 1: I possibly could have killed. That I learned just because
- 17:36Speaker 1: I was just sitting there. Let's making them gobble while
- 17:38Speaker 1: they were still on the tree limb. But you know,
- 17:41Speaker 1: like the for instance, this turkey, the one j Ordan
- 17:44Speaker 1: ended up shooting with, that's literally all we did. He
- 17:47Speaker 1: got tree up that and he got fly down, cackled,
- 17:49Speaker 1: and that is it. And that turkey stayed on the limb,
- 17:54Speaker 1: probably thirty to forty minutes later than you would expect
- 17:58Speaker 1: the turkey too, just because that's that's how they work
- 18:01Speaker 1: in nature, you know. They they hear the hen, they gobble.
- 18:04Speaker 1: And he was waiting for that hen to come walking
- 18:06Speaker 1: under his tree or walking close to it, and then
- 18:08Speaker 1: he pitched out to it. That's that's how he was
- 18:10Speaker 1: expecting his morning to go. Uh. But we were able
- 18:13Speaker 1: to wait him out, and he pitched down, he gotl
- 18:16Speaker 1: and he still took his sweet time getting to us.
- 18:20Speaker 1: But I think continuing to call him, call at him
- 18:22Speaker 1: on the limb like that makes that turkey just even
- 18:25Speaker 1: more go. All right, I'm just you know you're over here,
- 18:27Speaker 1: I'm supposed to gobble, You're gonna walk you the hen
- 18:30Speaker 1: is gonna walk up under the tree. And that's that. Um.
- 18:33Speaker 1: So yeah, as far as calling to him on the limb,
- 18:36Speaker 1: I keep it at a minimum, just just the essentials. Now,
- 18:40Speaker 1: what about this scenario. I was listening to an episode
- 18:43Speaker 1: of your podcast a while back and you described the
- 18:47Speaker 1: morning hunt you went out. I think it was in
- 18:49Speaker 1: Mississippi and you were sneaking in on a spot where
- 18:53Speaker 1: you thought there might be a bird roosted, and you'll
- 18:56Speaker 1: let off an old hoot and the bird guy like
- 19:00Speaker 1: forty or fifty yards away, like you're right underneath him.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Oh man, are you bringing up this negativity? Sort started
- 19:08Speaker 1: throw under the bus here? But what what do you
- 19:10Speaker 1: do in that scenario when you realize, oh crap, I
- 19:14Speaker 1: spooked a bird on the roost um, and and maybe
- 19:18Speaker 1: you're in a limited spot. I know a lot of people,
- 19:20Speaker 1: if they've got a bunch of landing on public maybe
- 19:22Speaker 1: they'll just go somewhere else, obviously, but what if you've
- 19:24Speaker 1: got you know, you're stuck on forty, you're stuck on eighty,
- 19:27Speaker 1: and you know that you spooked that bird. Maybe he's
- 19:30Speaker 1: the only one what do you do? How do you
- 19:32Speaker 1: approach it for the rest of the day. So, um
- 19:36Speaker 1: that that is an excellent question. Um So if if
- 19:40Speaker 1: i'm if that's like, if it's a forty acre piece
- 19:43Speaker 1: which I have hunted on before, Uh, that's used to
- 19:46Speaker 1: be all I had access to on private land actually,
- 19:49Speaker 1: But um, if if it's a small piece and I
- 19:52Speaker 1: know of one goblin turkey and I just bumped him
- 19:55Speaker 1: off the limb, I'm probably at least gonna at least
- 19:59Speaker 1: leave him alone on that morning. I may come back
- 20:01Speaker 1: that afternoon if I'm just wanting to hunt, but I'm
- 20:04Speaker 1: not gonna keep chasing her. And I'm not gonna sit
- 20:06Speaker 1: down right there and start yelping, because again, down here
- 20:10Speaker 1: in the South, at least, they're getting hammered so much.
- 20:12Speaker 1: I mean, I hate to even spook them at all,
- 20:14Speaker 1: And which I did. I spooked that one really bad.
- 20:17Speaker 1: But um we ended up like we just built like
- 20:21Speaker 1: which and that that wasn't a four the acre piece.
- 20:23Speaker 1: We ended up going to the other side of the
- 20:26Speaker 1: property and fooled around there. But as far as those turkeys,
- 20:28Speaker 1: they were like, we're leaving these alone. We've done more
- 20:31Speaker 1: than more than enough damage. That I wanted to do today.
- 20:34Speaker 1: So they're they're gone. So if I I spook them
- 20:36Speaker 1: that day, I leave them be. And so they ended
- 20:39Speaker 1: up being the right decision because they can't you know,
- 20:41Speaker 1: they came right back. He was right back in there. Um.
- 20:45Speaker 1: But just another like I have the best the best
- 20:50Speaker 1: advice I can give, or based off of screw ups
- 20:52Speaker 1: have made, you know what I mean. So uh, some
- 20:56Speaker 1: of the worst like screw ups have done on turkey hunt,
- 21:00Speaker 1: their turkey ust that I've blown have been based on
- 21:04Speaker 1: like like that turkey in particular, I had no reason
- 21:07Speaker 1: to believe that the turkey was roosted where I was
- 21:11Speaker 1: headed to find it. I'd like i'd heard him gobbling
- 21:14Speaker 1: there when I was scouting, but that wasn't on the limb.
- 21:16Speaker 1: He was already on the ground, and I'd heard a
- 21:18Speaker 1: turkey roost there in the past where I thought he was,
- 21:20Speaker 1: and so I just went with, he's gonna be right there.
- 21:23Speaker 1: And and Jordan's even said to me when we were
- 21:25Speaker 1: walking in, he was like, there's a chance he's roosted
- 21:27Speaker 1: on the edge of this cutover. I was like, no, man, no,
- 21:29Speaker 1: he might be, but he's I bet he's on that
- 21:31Speaker 1: ridge and he was not. So when you go making
- 21:36Speaker 1: asumpthing like that and getting impulsive, that's when you make
- 21:39Speaker 1: mistakes and you know, look really dumb like I did
- 21:42Speaker 1: and blow a turkey off the limb. Uh. So, what
- 21:45Speaker 1: are what are some of the other mistakes that you've
- 21:49Speaker 1: either done yourself or seen from your buddies or folks
- 21:52Speaker 1: you're hunting with that have helped you learn something, you know,
- 21:55Speaker 1: that kind of illuminated some aha moment. Any others that
- 22:00Speaker 1: stand out to you this year, past years that might
- 22:02Speaker 1: be helpful. Yeah? Absolutely, um and I'm like I said,
- 22:05Speaker 1: I can pull a lot from from this year. Um so. Uh.
- 22:10Speaker 1: It was that yesterday afternoon we uh Jordan's myself. We
- 22:14Speaker 1: I filmed Jimmy Jimmy Primo shoot one kind of place
- 22:17Speaker 1: that we had permission to hunt on in the north
- 22:19Speaker 1: part of the state, and that turkey. Um. We we
- 22:24Speaker 1: knew there was turkeys in the area. We had not
- 22:26Speaker 1: heard any goblin hardly at all. We've been hunting there
- 22:28Speaker 1: for three days. Solid had had heard hardly any gobbles
- 22:31Speaker 1: except for on the roost. But we knew they were there,
- 22:34Speaker 1: and so the plan was we were just gonna set
- 22:36Speaker 1: up on edges Field and uh, you can call every
- 22:40Speaker 1: once in a while. And so we ended up striking
- 22:41Speaker 1: a turkey. It's probably about three thirty in the afternoon.
- 22:45Speaker 1: And this turkey was once he struck, he was he
- 22:49Speaker 1: was as you know, as hot as you could want
- 22:51Speaker 1: a turkey to be. I mean, you could have yelped
- 22:53Speaker 1: to him probably a hundred times when he would have gobbled.
- 22:55Speaker 1: But Jordan's and this is as far as calling, it's
- 22:59Speaker 1: so easy. Who overcall in those situations? Um, Jordan's I
- 23:04Speaker 1: think yep. Well, the first time we heard him, he
- 23:05Speaker 1: was maybe three hundred yards away, and I think Jordan
- 23:08Speaker 1: called a total of three times. He the first time
- 23:11Speaker 1: he struck him, he yelped and cut the turkey gobbled.
- 23:14Speaker 1: He waited a few minutes, he yelped again, turkey gobl
- 23:17Speaker 1: He was closer, uh, and then he said, all right,
- 23:19Speaker 1: I'm waiting and he literally he pulled out his phone.
- 23:22Speaker 1: It was like four no, no, no, because it was
- 23:23Speaker 1: four it was four or twenty one pm, and he said,
- 23:26Speaker 1: if he hasn't gobbled again by four thirty, I'll call again.
- 23:30Speaker 1: I think it was like four twenty seven. The turkey
- 23:32Speaker 1: gobbles again on his own and he's a hundred and
- 23:34Speaker 1: fifty yards closer, and we're like, okay, he's coming. So
- 23:38Speaker 1: in contrast, I've seen several hunts like that, the turkey
- 23:40Speaker 1: starts gobbling, the hunter just starts pouring it to him,
- 23:43Speaker 1: just on the turkey's gobling his goblins goblin. And then
- 23:46Speaker 1: you're in the same situation that you are when the
- 23:49Speaker 1: turkeys on the limb and you're roosting. The turkey's off
- 23:51Speaker 1: there where he's at that afternoon, and you're steady calling
- 23:54Speaker 1: to him, and he's going, okay, i'll gobble. I'm right
- 23:56Speaker 1: here where he at. And then oftentimes he never shows up.
- 23:59Speaker 1: He just stands right Darren, God was waiting on you
- 24:01Speaker 1: to come to him. And so, um, mistakes overcalling can
- 24:05Speaker 1: can definitely be one of those. Is probably one of
- 24:07Speaker 1: the most common ones. Uh. And then other than that
- 24:10Speaker 1: is probably just getting too aggressive. We know turkeys can
- 24:15Speaker 1: see very very well and they can hear very very well,
- 24:18Speaker 1: but we let that seem to slip our mind thatt
- 24:22Speaker 1: at convenient times and you end up trying to get
- 24:24Speaker 1: too close and you bump them. That's that's a very
- 24:27Speaker 1: common one. Um. Yeah, there's there's a million ways to
- 24:31Speaker 1: mess up a turkey hunt. Yeah, I guess that's why
- 24:33Speaker 1: it keeps us coming back, right, It's not. It's always
- 24:36Speaker 1: a new puzzle to try to figure out each day. Yeah,
- 24:41Speaker 1: what about something you mentioned that Jordan did and and
- 24:44Speaker 1: maybe you already answered the question because you described how
- 24:46Speaker 1: he did this, but I'm curious if you ever think
- 24:48Speaker 1: about it differently. It's that that question of Okay, I
- 24:52Speaker 1: realized I shouldn't call too much, but how do I
- 24:55Speaker 1: then choose one I should? So he said, Okay, it's
- 24:58Speaker 1: it's whatever time twenty one on, I'll call again. So
- 25:02Speaker 1: he said, okay, nine minutes. But how do you think
- 25:05Speaker 1: through when the right time is to do it? Are
- 25:08Speaker 1: there any I'm just kind of curious about your thought
- 25:11Speaker 1: process there. How you make sure that you have some
- 25:13Speaker 1: kind of guidance. Yeah, it's man, Honestly, it's just sitting
- 25:18Speaker 1: down to turkeys and working in turkeys, just the reption, repetition,
- 25:22Speaker 1: and you kind of I know this may sound kind
- 25:25Speaker 1: of vague, but you kind of just get a feel
- 25:26Speaker 1: for it. Um Whereas like especially like the turkey that
- 25:30Speaker 1: was struck yesterday afternoon, Oftentimes, if you strike a turkey
- 25:33Speaker 1: like that and then he starts answering like he did
- 25:36Speaker 1: and then gobbles on his own. Chances are you don't
- 25:39Speaker 1: have to call at him anymore, you know. And then
- 25:42Speaker 1: especially I think I heard an old timer say at
- 25:44Speaker 1: one time, he said, never yet up to a turkey
- 25:47Speaker 1: that's walking to you, you know, like Collins Collins, for
- 25:50Speaker 1: the sake of letting you know I'm here. And then
- 25:53Speaker 1: you're hoping that you can pique his interest enough that
- 25:56Speaker 1: he'll that he'll come, you know, because like the common
- 25:59Speaker 1: saying is true, the way supposed to go in the
- 26:01Speaker 1: natural world is he gobbles and the hen comes to him.
- 26:03Speaker 1: So um, like if it what will cause it? Taking
- 26:07Speaker 1: a turkey's temperature, Like if I have to pull a
- 26:11Speaker 1: gobble out of a turkey. And what I mean by
- 26:13Speaker 1: that is like if I yelp and nothing, you know,
- 26:15Speaker 1: if I say, if yelp nothing, if I yelp and
- 26:17Speaker 1: then cluck nothing, And maybe if I yelp and cut
- 26:20Speaker 1: and still nothing, And then if I just cut really
- 26:22Speaker 1: aggressively and he gobbles, then he's probably not all that
- 26:25Speaker 1: fired up. So I'm you know, I'm either gonna slow
- 26:27Speaker 1: play him or or it just depends on the turkey.
- 26:32Speaker 1: If he's answering everything, and he's steadily closing distance, then
- 26:35Speaker 1: I'll set the call down. But if he's just answering
- 26:38Speaker 1: every once in a while, then I'll call a few times,
- 26:40Speaker 1: let him answer. Then i'll give him five ten minutes,
- 26:43Speaker 1: and then I'll call again and see where he's at.
- 26:45Speaker 1: And sometimes it's just a matter of you're not in
- 26:48Speaker 1: a place that he wants to be, and you have
- 26:49Speaker 1: to get up and move. Sometimes that moves only a
- 26:51Speaker 1: hundred yards, but it's enough for him to go, oh,
- 26:54Speaker 1: that hands over there, you know I wanted to go
- 26:56Speaker 1: there anyway, and then it works. Um. But really it's
- 26:59Speaker 1: just a matter of repetition and sitting down to turkeys
- 27:02Speaker 1: and you just kind of get a feel for what
- 27:04Speaker 1: they want to do and what they want to hear
- 27:06Speaker 1: and when they want to hear it. And I'm no,
- 27:07Speaker 1: I'm no expert at it. Like I said, I'm I'm
- 27:10Speaker 1: I'm The success that I have comes from several a
- 27:14Speaker 1: lot more error than success. That's that's the recipe I
- 27:19Speaker 1: think for any eventual success is just screwing up enough
- 27:21Speaker 1: and learning as you go. Turkey hunting is a is
- 27:24Speaker 1: a win, some lose. Most kind of sport, yes, that's
- 27:27Speaker 1: that's the truth. So what about what about the scenarios
- 27:31Speaker 1: outlined there where you take a turkey's temperature and he's
- 27:36Speaker 1: not coming in. He'll answer every once in a while,
- 27:39Speaker 1: but he's out there. He's hung up. He is making
- 27:42Speaker 1: his presence known, but he just won't close the distance.
- 27:44Speaker 1: You described one, uh possible option, which is to get
- 27:48Speaker 1: up and move. Can you can you walking through either
- 27:52Speaker 1: some more detail on that or anything else you'll do
- 27:54Speaker 1: to try to break a hung up bird? Sure? Um,
- 27:58Speaker 1: so several times, like I can think of a hunt
- 28:01Speaker 1: we were on and we were just we struck this turkey.
- 28:04Speaker 1: And when when we struck him, we first heard him gobble.
- 28:07Speaker 1: We were standing in a small food plot and the
- 28:10Speaker 1: food plot kind of fell off into a bottom, this
- 28:12Speaker 1: big pretty hard woods and uh, the turkey the bottom
- 28:17Speaker 1: kind of pilled off and then there was a ridge. Um,
- 28:20Speaker 1: and the ridge that was you know, ran close to
- 28:22Speaker 1: this food plot we were in, but it didn't connect
- 28:24Speaker 1: to it, you know, So the turkey just wasn't gonna easily,
- 28:28Speaker 1: you know, walk the ridge that he was on and
- 28:29Speaker 1: then pop out in the food plot. He would have
- 28:31Speaker 1: to walk at amount of ways and bail off get
- 28:33Speaker 1: into the bottom then walk out into the food plot,
- 28:36Speaker 1: and he came. You know, he walked down the ridge
- 28:38Speaker 1: a certain amount of ways, but it became very obvious
- 28:41Speaker 1: he would answer us, but he was like, I'm not
- 28:43Speaker 1: leaving this ridge. You know, that's just where he wanted
- 28:46Speaker 1: to be. And you'll you'll find that, you know, especially um,
- 28:49Speaker 1: if a turkey is in a spot like it's a
- 28:50Speaker 1: big pretty spot, he might be in there just strutting
- 28:53Speaker 1: and drumming and and gobling and doing his thing, and
- 28:56Speaker 1: he's just kind of a lot of times we just
- 28:57Speaker 1: say he's in his happy place, you know, he's not.
- 28:59Speaker 1: He's where he wants to be. That's probably where he
- 29:02Speaker 1: goes to goblin, drum and attract hands and then he
- 29:04Speaker 1: goes from there. So what my move there would be is,
- 29:08Speaker 1: I mean, I'm I'm gonna give that food plot a
- 29:10Speaker 1: few minutes to see if he will break and come.
- 29:12Speaker 1: But after a while I'm gonna find a way to
- 29:15Speaker 1: slip off into that bottom and try to get on
- 29:17Speaker 1: the same ridge with him, you know, because the I've
- 29:20Speaker 1: found the most success that I have and calling in
- 29:22Speaker 1: turkeys is if I put myself in a position where
- 29:26Speaker 1: he does not mind going, or if he's somewhere that
- 29:29Speaker 1: he already wants to be. The calling job gets a
- 29:32Speaker 1: lot easier if if you're somewhere that he already wants
- 29:35Speaker 1: to go. Yeah, it makes a lot of sense, uh anything,
- 29:39Speaker 1: And this is I don't know, this is pretty common sense,
- 29:43Speaker 1: I guess. But when it comes to sneak it in
- 29:46Speaker 1: on turkeys, right, making those moves so many times, that's
- 29:49Speaker 1: when a hunt gets blown, Right, it's when he decided
- 29:52Speaker 1: to make a move in those damn eyes they have,
- 29:54Speaker 1: they pick you off. Anything you've had, anything you've learned
- 29:58Speaker 1: about sneaking in change positions successfully? Yeah, absolutely, uh. And
- 30:04Speaker 1: again it comes from trial and error, because I have
- 30:06Speaker 1: spooked a pile of them in my younger days. Um So,
- 30:10Speaker 1: for instance, like the the scenario was talking about there,
- 30:14Speaker 1: the food plot at the bottom and the ridge. Uh,
- 30:17Speaker 1: you know, especially if it's you know, an earlier season,
- 30:20Speaker 1: which that one I'm talking about, particularly, it was still
- 30:23Speaker 1: fairly early in the season, so the woods are way open.
- 30:25Speaker 1: So the easiest and the quickest way to walk is
- 30:28Speaker 1: just bail off that food plot, getting the bottom and
- 30:30Speaker 1: walk to that turkey. But you know, obviously, right, if
- 30:33Speaker 1: that happens from walking through a wide open bottom and
- 30:35Speaker 1: he's the top of the ridge looking down, He's gonna
- 30:38Speaker 1: see me, and then you're gonna sit there going quite
- 30:40Speaker 1: he quit goblin. Well he saw me, you know. So
- 30:44Speaker 1: I'll oftentimes I've found, unless you're hunting somewhere that has
- 30:49Speaker 1: a lot of topography, um, which this place, you know,
- 30:52Speaker 1: it really didn't. I mean like you had that ridge,
- 30:54Speaker 1: but that to get to that turkey, um that you
- 30:58Speaker 1: have to Oftentimes you have to take either the more
- 31:01Speaker 1: difficult ways or the longer ways to get yourself in
- 31:05Speaker 1: a better position. Um Like oftentimes we'll back straight out,
- 31:10Speaker 1: you know, or I'm I'm I say not. Oftentimes in
- 31:12Speaker 1: that situation you back straight out, you kind of get
- 31:16Speaker 1: on the same You get where that ridge is and
- 31:19Speaker 1: you getta get on the side of it, and then
- 31:21Speaker 1: you just try to put as much cover between you
- 31:25Speaker 1: and him and just kind of slow intentional moves, you know, uh,
- 31:30Speaker 1: where you're not just walking in the wide open I've
- 31:33Speaker 1: found that not even just having them see you, but
- 31:36Speaker 1: walking really loud, you know, crunching leaves and sticks draws
- 31:40Speaker 1: as much at because they got really good ears too.
- 31:43Speaker 1: So and another another thing that helps a lot. I've
- 31:46Speaker 1: seen a lot of steaks, and it's like they have
- 31:50Speaker 1: locked in their mind the last time I heard him,
- 31:52Speaker 1: God was here, and so you just think he's still
- 31:55Speaker 1: right there in that exact same spot when he I mean,
- 31:58Speaker 1: he could be close. And so a lot of times
- 32:00Speaker 1: what we'll do is either we won't necessarily yelp to him,
- 32:04Speaker 1: Uh we will if we have to, but if he can,
- 32:07Speaker 1: if he's fired up enough where he'll answer a crow
- 32:09Speaker 1: or even an owl, hoot, because that that's a lot
- 32:11Speaker 1: of folks think you can only al hoot and get
- 32:13Speaker 1: him to gobble in the morning, allow hoot all throughout
- 32:16Speaker 1: the day and still and still have success with it.
- 32:18Speaker 1: And they're not thinking it's a turkey. They're just gobbling
- 32:21Speaker 1: that out. So if you can keep that turkey gobbling
- 32:23Speaker 1: and keep a reference to him, then you can go
- 32:26Speaker 1: all right, I can get you know, this thicket right
- 32:29Speaker 1: here between me and him, and I can gain another
- 32:32Speaker 1: hundred yards and keep that, you know, keep that blocking
- 32:34Speaker 1: me so I know he won't see me. That kind
- 32:36Speaker 1: of just kind of taking your time. How frequently do
- 32:39Speaker 1: you think you can do that without some kind of
- 32:42Speaker 1: risk of maybe there's not a risk. But how frequently
- 32:45Speaker 1: will you do that owl hoot to try to check location?
- 32:48Speaker 1: Is that every five minutes? Is that every hundred yards?
- 32:51Speaker 1: Is it? I don't know. How do you think about
- 32:53Speaker 1: those checkens? Yeah, that that's a good question because you
- 32:56Speaker 1: definitely don't want to just be like or you know,
- 32:58Speaker 1: I mean, uh so every five minutes, it's is probably fine. Um.
- 33:03Speaker 1: And because like you can't overdo it. I mean, at
- 33:07Speaker 1: some point you have to think the turkey's going why
- 33:10Speaker 1: is that al hooting so much flying towards me? You know?
- 33:13Speaker 1: But uh, you know, and sometimes if you get lucky
- 33:15Speaker 1: and he's just gobbling on his own, but those are
- 33:18Speaker 1: you know, near and far between. But yeah, probably if
- 33:21Speaker 1: you're doing it every five minutes, you're fine. Um. And
- 33:24Speaker 1: I'm not talking about like getting just crazy with your
- 33:27Speaker 1: alcohol either, just a you know a lot of times
- 33:29Speaker 1: you'll hear an al just let out a singular note.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Just that's usually what we go with first. Um. And
- 33:37Speaker 1: if we do that, you know, if we get him
- 33:39Speaker 1: to answer us twice and he's in the same spot
- 33:41Speaker 1: every time, then you know, well you you try to
- 33:45Speaker 1: you use it, uh, I guess that you're on discretion,
- 33:49Speaker 1: you know, because you, like you said, you're not trying
- 33:51Speaker 1: to overdo it, but just enough that you can kind
- 33:53Speaker 1: of keep him pegged and still keep moving. So every
- 33:58Speaker 1: five minutes is probably fairly safe to say. Yeah, I
- 34:00Speaker 1: heard you talk to I think it was Jordan's once
- 34:03Speaker 1: about how every hunter, for most hunters have got that
- 34:07Speaker 1: one call that when nothing else is working, that will
- 34:11Speaker 1: draw to gobble. There's something there seems to be those
- 34:14Speaker 1: those certain box calls or certain different things that when
- 34:17Speaker 1: you really got to get one when they're not shocked,
- 34:19Speaker 1: goblin too, the owl, whatever it is you're saying, all
- 34:22Speaker 1: right and put on a pull at old Trustee and
- 34:24Speaker 1: then do X Y and Z on it and damn it,
- 34:26Speaker 1: that's gonna get us a gobble. What is that for you?
- 34:30Speaker 1: Or have you seen anything that commonly is okay when
- 34:34Speaker 1: you really need one, try this? Yeah. Um, So oftentimes
- 34:40Speaker 1: when you like you have, like we a lot of
- 34:42Speaker 1: times we call him a gobble puller. You know that.
- 34:44Speaker 1: I mean that because well you hear it down here
- 34:46Speaker 1: a lot again redneck terminology. But then you said, man,
- 34:48Speaker 1: that that calls a gobble puller, And uh, often times
- 34:53Speaker 1: it's a box call and it's not not only a
- 34:55Speaker 1: box call, but it's got a it's a box call
- 34:58Speaker 1: that's got a real, real sharp high front end and
- 35:02Speaker 1: then it falls off really hard on the back end,
- 35:05Speaker 1: just a real sharp yelp. Just yea. And um, what's
- 35:09Speaker 1: been doing it for us is, Uh, there's a it's
- 35:13Speaker 1: called the Tall Timber Gabriel. And it's no surprise why
- 35:16Speaker 1: that call works so well. It's like a it's a
- 35:19Speaker 1: like a Will Primo's design to the core, like you
- 35:21Speaker 1: think he he kept that call of secret for a
- 35:23Speaker 1: few years and was working on it and got it
- 35:26Speaker 1: the way that he liked it. Um, but that call
- 35:29Speaker 1: and it sounds a lot like the Premo has had
- 35:32Speaker 1: a box call a couple of years ago. It's called
- 35:34Speaker 1: the Heartbreaker and that was one of the most popular
- 35:37Speaker 1: calls that that they had at the time. It was
- 35:39Speaker 1: way before I worked here, and uh, it was kind
- 35:42Speaker 1: of The Tall Timber Gabriel is kind of based off
- 35:45Speaker 1: that call. But it's got like these Will wanted to
- 35:48Speaker 1: have thumb grews. We could cut on it easier. And
- 35:51Speaker 1: often times when it's worked for us this spring and
- 35:54Speaker 1: springs in the past, as you'll get that that box
- 35:57Speaker 1: call and you'll yelp on it really hard. His four
- 36:00Speaker 1: notes just out and then cut on it. So it's
- 36:03Speaker 1: like yeah, yeah, yeah, gotta and that we'll pull a
- 36:06Speaker 1: gobble out of a turkey on in the most dire
- 36:09Speaker 1: of situations. It's it's mind blowing, like I've I've seen
- 36:13Speaker 1: it in certain situations, like it'll be up in the morning,
- 36:16Speaker 1: nothing's really gobbling. You're like, all right, where do we
- 36:18Speaker 1: go from here? Maybe let's try to strike one. Someone
- 36:21Speaker 1: will yelp with their mouth call and nothing. Someone will
- 36:24Speaker 1: yelp with their slate call and nothing. And then Jordan
- 36:27Speaker 1: will pull out that tall timber Yeah, yeah, yeah, gott
- 36:30Speaker 1: dot ball and you're like, where has that turkey been?
- 36:33Speaker 1: You know, it's just I don't know what it is.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Just something about that frequency makes some gobble. Yeah, just
- 36:37Speaker 1: getting a little nasty with it. Sometimes just gets yeah. Yeah.
- 36:41Speaker 1: The first turkey I killed this spring, we had heard
- 36:44Speaker 1: him gobble. We made a move towards him. Um, I
- 36:47Speaker 1: al hooted nothing. I mean, and again, this is up
- 36:50Speaker 1: in the day. This is probably don't I know it
- 36:52Speaker 1: was later than eight am. I al hoo did nothing.
- 36:55Speaker 1: Wait a little bit, I got out my slate, I
- 36:57Speaker 1: yelped nothing. I cut and yelped on my slate nothing in.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Jordan said, you want to hit him with the top timber.
- 37:01Speaker 1: I said, yes, so I take the camera pointed him.
- 37:05Speaker 1: He pulls out that box call, yelps off nothing. Then
- 37:07Speaker 1: he does the hard yelp and cut got got cotton
- 37:10Speaker 1: turkey gobbles. I was like, thank you for doing that. Yeah.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Speaking of speaking of using Jordan's box call, I've also
- 37:21Speaker 1: seen you guys do some calling in tandem working off.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Can you can you talk a little bit about what
- 37:27Speaker 1: you're thinking about when you're doing that kind of thing
- 37:29Speaker 1: or some something I've done the past. I know a
- 37:32Speaker 1: lot of guys do it too. Is sometimes you'll have
- 37:34Speaker 1: a buddy to do the walk away and call while
- 37:36Speaker 1: leaving some up front. Are there any other ways that
- 37:39Speaker 1: you kind of tag team turkeys and that kind of
- 37:42Speaker 1: fashion or can you describe more detail behind you do that?
- 37:45Speaker 1: The probably the one of the most lethal ways that
- 37:49Speaker 1: doing what you're doing. And honestly, I don't get to
- 37:53Speaker 1: use this tactic very much just because when you're filming
- 37:55Speaker 1: and stuff, it doesn't it doesn't work that well because
- 37:58Speaker 1: you can get yourself in a sential ation really quick
- 38:00Speaker 1: where you're like, oh crap, everybody sit down, and when
- 38:02Speaker 1: you're dealing with camera equipment and just sometimes it was
- 38:05Speaker 1: fast set ups just don't work to your advantage. But um, yeah,
- 38:09Speaker 1: Jordan and I are not with me and George because
- 38:12Speaker 1: we hunt together a lot. We'll yell back and forth
- 38:14Speaker 1: to each other. And again it's kind of that same
- 38:17Speaker 1: situation I was talking about with Wilber where you're trying
- 38:19Speaker 1: to paint a picture. Well, I mean if the turkey
- 38:21Speaker 1: gets kind of excited and there's one hen, well, all
- 38:24Speaker 1: of a sudden, you start cutting back and forth at
- 38:26Speaker 1: each other like it's two hens kind of arguing or
- 38:28Speaker 1: they're excited, then that can make that turkey very excited
- 38:31Speaker 1: because he's going, oh goodness, there's two of them over there.
- 38:33Speaker 1: And so I've had that work and break a turkey
- 38:36Speaker 1: that was hung up several times. But one of my
- 38:39Speaker 1: favorite things to do when you're kind of calling in tandem,
- 38:42Speaker 1: um and I was able to do it this year
- 38:44Speaker 1: in Alabama. I was down there just fun hunting. We
- 38:46Speaker 1: weren't filming or anything, um is we will walk to
- 38:50Speaker 1: the turkey. And again, this is in Thicker Woods Foliage
- 38:55Speaker 1: had some topography We're not just walking through wide open
- 38:57Speaker 1: flat timber, you know. Um, but we were moving towards
- 39:01Speaker 1: the turkey, and we were calling at him as we
- 39:03Speaker 1: were moving. And what just to kind of frame that
- 39:06Speaker 1: up to be more specific, kind of tell what I'm seeing,
- 39:09Speaker 1: what I'm talking about, is so there was me, uh,
- 39:13Speaker 1: and then there's the other guy that was calling, probably
- 39:16Speaker 1: walking twenty yards ahead of me, and we're just kind
- 39:19Speaker 1: of sound. We were trying to just sound like two
- 39:21Speaker 1: hens walk into the woods moving to these goblin turkeys.
- 39:25Speaker 1: And why I think that works so well is again
- 39:27Speaker 1: that's is that's how how that's supposed to play out
- 39:29Speaker 1: in nature. That you the turkey gobbles and the hen
- 39:32Speaker 1: goes to him. So as we're walking towards him, you know,
- 39:35Speaker 1: I would cluck and yell and then he would answer me,
- 39:38Speaker 1: I mean just now, And then twenty yards ahead, he'd
- 39:41Speaker 1: yelped back at me, and turkeys would gobble. And then
- 39:44Speaker 1: we as we got closer, we got a little bit
- 39:46Speaker 1: more excited. I would yelp harder, and he would yelp,
- 39:49Speaker 1: y'all harder at me. The turkeys are goblin more. And
- 39:51Speaker 1: then finally, one time, um, I yelped and cut and
- 39:55Speaker 1: he yelped back at me and the turkey's gobble and
- 39:57Speaker 1: they're a hundred yards away. We were like, crap, gotta
- 40:00Speaker 1: sit down. We sat down and then probably, I mean honestly,
- 40:03Speaker 1: probably less than ten minutes later the turkeys were dead.
- 40:06Speaker 1: But that is a lethal, lethal method when it's used correctly,
- 40:10Speaker 1: because again it's it's it's all about adding realism. And
- 40:13Speaker 1: when that gobler, goblin turkey is hearing these hands make
- 40:17Speaker 1: his way to him, he's thinking, all is right in
- 40:19Speaker 1: the world, you know, So that's that can work very well. Yeah.
- 40:22Speaker 1: I like that. I like this overall theme of of
- 40:26Speaker 1: painting that picture and how you can do that with
- 40:28Speaker 1: the calls, how you can do that with your movement
- 40:31Speaker 1: um and I think you can probably do that in
- 40:33Speaker 1: a literal sense, in the sort of way with decoys,
- 40:36Speaker 1: which we haven't really talked at all about. Can you
- 40:39Speaker 1: can you tell me just a little bit about what
- 40:42Speaker 1: you do to take those decoys to the next level,
- 40:45Speaker 1: Like we know the standard put a couple of decoys
- 40:48Speaker 1: out and you know, we don't need to talk about
- 40:50Speaker 1: the basics, but how do you paint that most realistic
- 40:53Speaker 1: picture with their decoys? Are there any little tricks that
- 40:56Speaker 1: you've learned to just to ramp it up a little
- 40:59Speaker 1: bit or add some realism or anything like that. Sure. Um,
- 41:03Speaker 1: So if you're hunting in an open setting, um, and
- 41:06Speaker 1: you know a lot of times I'll use jake decoy
- 41:10Speaker 1: a lot. Um. I'll often use a Jake decoy more
- 41:13Speaker 1: than I would even a strutter. Um. And as far
- 41:17Speaker 1: as like adding realism and and getting you know, a
- 41:21Speaker 1: long beard a gobbler to close if you will put
- 41:24Speaker 1: like we have that um um um gob stopper Jack
- 41:28Speaker 1: how I'm how am I forgetting the name so gob
- 41:30Speaker 1: stopper Jake. But it's just a half struck Jake decoy right, um.
- 41:34Speaker 1: And we take a hin and kind of put her
- 41:37Speaker 1: in a breeder position down on the ground and put
- 41:39Speaker 1: him where he's standing over her. You want to talk
- 41:42Speaker 1: about a turkey, you know, turning inside out to get
- 41:45Speaker 1: over to you that that works? Which again that's no,
- 41:48Speaker 1: that's no big secret. Um. As far as like, uh,
- 41:53Speaker 1: what we'll do is I've talked, you know about using
- 41:57Speaker 1: decoys in the timber. Sometimes I do. Sometimes I don't. Um.
- 42:00Speaker 1: One thing that I will do if I am hunting
- 42:02Speaker 1: the timber, I will say I hardly ever use a
- 42:06Speaker 1: gobbler decoy. When I say at gobbler decoy, I mean
- 42:08Speaker 1: of of any degree of jake construt or anything. If
- 42:11Speaker 1: I'm using the decoy up in the timber, it's usually
- 42:13Speaker 1: just alone. Hen and uh, what I'll do oftentimes as
- 42:18Speaker 1: far as just the standard like put it out in
- 42:20Speaker 1: front of you and hope the turkey comes up to
- 42:22Speaker 1: it where it's twenty yards away. Is um just a
- 42:26Speaker 1: trick I guess is if you're if you're caught up
- 42:29Speaker 1: in a setup that's kind of open, you know, where
- 42:31Speaker 1: you're like, I have to sit here, but I'm not
- 42:34Speaker 1: so sure about it because I feel kind of exposed.
- 42:37Speaker 1: Is you can take that decoy and still put it
- 42:40Speaker 1: to where you know, if the turkey comes to it,
- 42:42Speaker 1: he's You're it's in a position where you can very
- 42:44Speaker 1: easily shoot at it. But I won't put it directly
- 42:47Speaker 1: in line with myself, you know what I'm saying. So
- 42:50Speaker 1: the turkey, if he's looking at the decoy from the
- 42:52Speaker 1: way that I think he's gonna approach, he's not. He's
- 42:55Speaker 1: not able to look right over the decoy and see
- 42:58Speaker 1: me sitting there. Maybe I may be put it off
- 43:00Speaker 1: to the left a little bit or off to the right,
- 43:03Speaker 1: just to where if he comes in and he's focused
- 43:05Speaker 1: on that decoy, he's also his his line of view
- 43:07Speaker 1: that he's focused on will not include you know, the
- 43:10Speaker 1: big green gorilla sitting by the tree. That's a good
- 43:12Speaker 1: that's a good point. That's a good point. Do you
- 43:15Speaker 1: add any movement. I know some guys will have a
- 43:17Speaker 1: fan with them. I think I've heard you mentioned using
- 43:19Speaker 1: this in the past. Will have a fan, will hold
- 43:21Speaker 1: up every once in a while. Do you do that
- 43:23Speaker 1: or anything like it? Yes, rarely in the woods, rarely
- 43:27Speaker 1: in the woods. Um and in open settings absolutely, I've again,
- 43:32Speaker 1: I know there's some guys that think, you know, fan
- 43:34Speaker 1: of turkeys is you know or is a sinful way
- 43:37Speaker 1: to kill a turkey? You know, whatever, I do it, uh,
- 43:42Speaker 1: I have no problem with doing it. Uh So we
- 43:46Speaker 1: have used it in the woods before, like if you know,
- 43:48Speaker 1: sometimes long beer, he'll get to eighty yards or so
- 43:51Speaker 1: and he just kind of won't close. We'll try to
- 43:53Speaker 1: stick the fan up and just show it to him.
- 43:54Speaker 1: We've had that work before, and we've had it. We've
- 43:57Speaker 1: had it work. We've had it where they don't like
- 43:59Speaker 1: it and turn going to leave. And then we've had
- 44:01Speaker 1: them where they definitely see the fan and just doesn't
- 44:03Speaker 1: change their demeanor at all. Um. As far as a
- 44:06Speaker 1: fan working, I've seen strutter decoys and fan in turkeys
- 44:10Speaker 1: work a whole lot better in an open type setting
- 44:14Speaker 1: like out in the field or a food plot or
- 44:16Speaker 1: a power line. Um. But yeah, I sometimes we'll have
- 44:20Speaker 1: like just a hen out the same kind of thing.
- 44:22Speaker 1: He can see the hen, but he's way across the
- 44:24Speaker 1: field or way down the power line or whatever. And
- 44:26Speaker 1: then you show him that fan several times. That can
- 44:29Speaker 1: be enough to break them and make them come in awesome. Well,
- 44:34Speaker 1: I will tell you something like you have officially gotten
- 44:37Speaker 1: me very excited for tomorrow morning because it is opening
- 44:41Speaker 1: date tomorrow morning for me in Michigan. And and like
- 44:45Speaker 1: I mentioned, I'm not gonna shoot one. I'm just gonna
- 44:47Speaker 1: go out there and try to play with them, I guess.
- 44:49Speaker 1: But I'm gonna get out there nonetheless and uh and
- 44:51Speaker 1: have some fun with it. So thank you for doing this.
- 44:55Speaker 1: And I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it very much. Yeah,
- 44:59Speaker 1: me too. We're where can people see what you guys
- 45:01Speaker 1: are up to? I know, you've got videos, podcasts, everything.
- 45:04Speaker 1: Where can people follow on that content? Yeah, so obviously
- 45:08Speaker 1: we have we have Instagram, uh, Premos Hunting on Instagram.
- 45:12Speaker 1: I have my personal page, which I'm pretty easy to find,
- 45:15Speaker 1: just because you know, late Pickle is not the most
- 45:17Speaker 1: common of names. And thank my thank my parents for
- 45:20Speaker 1: that one. But um, and then so we have our
- 45:22Speaker 1: YouTube channel. But then the coolest thing that we have
- 45:26Speaker 1: right going going on right now our Premos is we
- 45:27Speaker 1: have a new web series. You know, for the longest
- 45:30Speaker 1: time it was you know, the Primos Truth DVDs and
- 45:34Speaker 1: we still have the show on Outdoor channel, but we
- 45:35Speaker 1: have a uh web series that we're updating every week
- 45:40Speaker 1: that can be found on premos dot com. And it's
- 45:42Speaker 1: like like the turkey that Jordan's shot this morning will
- 45:46Speaker 1: most likely be uploaded for free for everyone to watch
- 45:49Speaker 1: it premo dot com next Tuesday, I think, but if
- 45:53Speaker 1: it's not yet, so we we're uploading new hunts on
- 45:55Speaker 1: there every Tuesday and Thursday. It's good stuff. I've I've
- 45:59Speaker 1: been checking it out and you guys doing a great job,
- 46:01Speaker 1: so I appreciate it up and good luck with the
- 46:04Speaker 1: rest of Turkey Hunts. Thank you man. I appreciate that.
- 46:06Speaker 1: Thank you for let me come on. I'm a huge
- 46:08Speaker 1: fan of Wired to Hunt. You do a good job.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Thank you for that. Let's stay in touch. Yeah, man,
- 46:13Speaker 1: absolutely all right, and that is a rap. Thank you
- 46:18Speaker 1: all for tuning in. I hope you enjoyed this one.
- 46:21Speaker 1: If you're like me, I'm fired up already to go.
- 46:24Speaker 1: Like I just said, I'm ready to get out there
- 46:25Speaker 1: and do some turkey hunting. So best of luck on
- 46:27Speaker 1: your upcutting hunts. I hope you have a great time
- 46:30Speaker 1: out there, be safe, be well. I'm I'm hoping for
- 46:35Speaker 1: all the best for all of you. I hope you're healthy,
- 46:37Speaker 1: hope your family is healthy, and that you're getting through
- 46:40Speaker 1: these tough times. So until next time, we will talk
- 46:43Speaker 1: to you soon and stay Wired to Hunt.
