- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Jim Mora and Yukon Football now five
- 0:03Speaker 1: and three on the Yukon Football Coaches Show on Mike Chrispino.
- 0:06Speaker 1: A couple turnovers by the Huskies, Jim and I know, turnovers.
- 0:11Speaker 1: It's it's an obvious equation when you turn it over.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Usually you don't overcome that. It's pretty hard. Minus two
- 0:18Speaker 1: in that category in the game, I think minus five,
- 0:20Speaker 1: minus one, oh, minus one, I'm sorry, that's right, minus four,
- 0:24Speaker 1: I guess on the season. But to overcome that, it's
- 0:28Speaker 1: not easy. The team was able to do that. What
- 0:32Speaker 1: did you see? I want to ask about the throw
- 0:34Speaker 1: that Nick Evers made in the flat that turned out
- 0:37Speaker 1: to be an interception. I don't know what happened there.
- 0:40Speaker 1: You do, you're right there obviously. What was your take
- 0:43Speaker 1: on what happened on that one?
- 0:45Speaker 2: Man, remind me of which one that was. I'm trying to.
- 0:49Speaker 1: It looked like you were setting up some kind of
- 0:51Speaker 1: wide receiver screen maybe something like that.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I mean the receiver missus block.
- 0:58Speaker 3: The receiver that was supposed to block that guy missed
- 1:00Speaker 3: his block, and the guy read it well and made
- 1:03Speaker 3: to play.
- 1:04Speaker 2: That one wasn't on on Nick?
- 1:06Speaker 3: That was on on somebody else, so uh, you know,
- 1:10Speaker 3: we can't let that happen. It's just you know, the
- 1:12Speaker 3: quarterback is going to take the brunt of it always,
- 1:15Speaker 3: but that was not on That wasn't on the quarterback.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and fortunately that one didn't come back for six.
- 1:22Speaker 1: That's that was a good thing.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Well. Yeah, I mean Shamar was able to you know,
- 1:26Speaker 3: tackle that guy, which was great.
- 1:28Speaker 2: I mean he showed some urgency.
- 1:30Speaker 3: To get that guy to the ground and I think
- 1:31Speaker 3: I don't know if they kicked a field goal or not,
- 1:33Speaker 3: but we got off. You know, they didn't get in
- 1:35Speaker 3: the end zone, and that's important.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Nick also had a fumble when he was trying
- 1:40Speaker 1: for extra yardage. He got hit three or four times
- 1:43Speaker 1: and then the ball came loose. I know it's easy
- 1:46Speaker 1: to say, well get down before you know the crowd
- 1:50Speaker 1: comes to the ball. But it wasn't much he could
- 1:53Speaker 1: have done there. It seemed to me he just got
- 1:55Speaker 1: turned and twisted and the ball got knocked out of there,
- 1:57Speaker 1: and that that cost the Huskies our back.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Missus block, they got hits on on Nick. We have
- 2:07Speaker 3: to do a much better job in protection there. And
- 2:09Speaker 3: then I feel like they should have blown the whistle.
- 2:12Speaker 3: We put so much emphasis on protecting the quarterback. They
- 2:16Speaker 3: were too clear, clear as can be, clear as can
- 2:19Speaker 3: be targeting hits on that play.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I asked them to review it. They said they did.
- 2:27Speaker 3: I show you some I told the guys that if
- 2:29Speaker 3: it wasn't fifteen yard penalty, I'd pull this iPad out
- 2:31Speaker 3: right now and show you that it was targeting, but
- 2:34Speaker 3: be a yard penalty.
- 2:35Speaker 2: If I did that, and I wasn't gonna win that one.
- 2:38Speaker 3: But the bottom line is this is that we have
- 2:42Speaker 3: to make sure that after every play we're giving the
- 2:45Speaker 3: ball to the official or the ball is in the
- 2:49Speaker 3: end zone. We can't leave the ball on the ground,
- 2:51Speaker 3: you know. We can't control when they blow the whistle
- 2:55Speaker 3: when they.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Think the play is dead. You know, look, they're humans.
- 2:58Speaker 2: They're gonna see it the way they see it.
- 3:00Speaker 3: They're going to make air sometimes, that's the nature of
- 3:04Speaker 3: sports and judgment calls. So it's up to us to
- 3:07Speaker 3: make sure that we don't leave the ball on the grass,
- 3:11Speaker 3: so there is never a decision to be made by
- 3:14Speaker 3: an official.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree on the replay on the TV, which
- 3:19Speaker 1: we have the monitor in the radio booth, it was
- 3:22Speaker 1: obvious to me that there was helmet to helmet contact.
- 3:26Speaker 1: That's targeting in my mind, I think on the rule
- 3:29Speaker 1: book it is. I don't get it. I just don't
- 3:32Speaker 1: get how that does not get called. Because the man
- 3:35Speaker 1: is vulnerable, he's being stood up by one tackler maybe two,
- 3:39Speaker 1: while two other guys you know, line them up and
- 3:42Speaker 1: hit him helmet to helmet. I don't get it.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Well, you know, there's a real emphasis on protecting a
- 3:49Speaker 3: defensive player, and a lot of times that's the quarterback,
- 3:52Speaker 3: and there should be I really believe there should be.
- 3:55Speaker 3: We know this that the game moves so fast that
- 3:58Speaker 3: the officials on the field are going to miss it
- 3:59Speaker 3: some times. I mean, it's just they are, and that's
- 4:02Speaker 3: why we have replay. And then, you know what, I
- 4:05Speaker 3: think every replay official sees it a little bit different,
- 4:08Speaker 3: you know, And that was one I would have liked
- 4:12Speaker 3: to have called. But it wasn't something that you know,
- 4:15Speaker 3: I was having an out of body because they didn't
- 4:18Speaker 3: call it. They didn't call it. You know, I think
- 4:21Speaker 3: it was targeting, but you know, hey, like I said,
- 4:25Speaker 3: we got to hold onto the ball.
- 4:26Speaker 2: You know, I.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Think they should throw the flag for targeting the way
- 4:30Speaker 3: they're throwing it and then it should go to replay,
- 4:32Speaker 3: and you know, someone that has a chance to slow
- 4:35Speaker 3: it down and really look at it can make that decision.
- 4:37Speaker 3: And that's what they did, and they made the decision.
- 4:40Speaker 3: It wasn't targeting, So you got to move on.
- 4:43Speaker 1: You know, in basketball and I officiate hoops, we get
- 4:47Speaker 1: a call or two or things that happened where a
- 4:50Speaker 1: coach will say, can you watch the way this You know,
- 4:53Speaker 1: forward is rebounding, his elbows are really high, has been
- 4:56Speaker 1: hitting my guy in the chin. It's different in football.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Think you can tell me whether I'm right or wrong
- 5:02Speaker 1: on this, because you don't get the same kind of
- 5:04Speaker 1: play over and over like you do in basketball. You
- 5:07Speaker 1: get it over and over, and as an official you
- 5:10Speaker 1: can kind of look for what a coach just told you.
- 5:14Speaker 1: But in football, if you say to an official, well
- 5:17Speaker 1: can you watch this or that, it might not happen
- 5:19Speaker 1: again in the whole game.
- 5:21Speaker 2: No, you're right.
- 5:22Speaker 3: There's less frequency, you know, of the same type of
- 5:25Speaker 3: play in football as there would be in basketball. But
- 5:29Speaker 3: you're still giving those guys, you know, some indicators before
- 5:32Speaker 3: the game. You meet with him, you ask them to
- 5:34Speaker 3: look for a couple of things. You don't want to
- 5:35Speaker 3: overdo it because you don't want to come off as
- 5:37Speaker 3: a whiner. And during the game, constant communication. You know,
- 5:41Speaker 3: I'll say this, you know I was. I was a
- 5:43Speaker 3: little critical last week of the ACC officials. The one
- 5:47Speaker 3: thing that they do well and they do a lot
- 5:49Speaker 3: of things well, So I'll say one of the things
- 5:51Speaker 3: that they do well is they do an excellent job
- 5:53Speaker 3: of communicating with the coach on the sideline and they
- 5:58Speaker 3: try to be consistent, and I think as a coach,
- 6:02Speaker 3: that's what you have to ask for, you know, hey,
- 6:04Speaker 3: just be consistent and communicate with us and listen to us.
- 6:10Speaker 2: And they do that. Now, they're gonna miss some.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Calls, and there's gonna be times when I when I
- 6:15Speaker 3: gripe and I'm wrong, and that's the nature of the game,
- 6:18Speaker 3: and there's gonna be it's an emotional, emotional environment and
- 6:22Speaker 3: they're having to make split second decisions, and I respect.
- 6:26Speaker 3: I mean, I've thought about well, I don't know if
- 6:28Speaker 3: I've truly thought about it, but I've had people say,
- 6:31Speaker 3: why don't you go try.
- 6:31Speaker 2: To be an official when you're done.
- 6:34Speaker 3: The only problem is when I'm not gonna I'm not
- 6:36Speaker 3: gonna stop coaching until I can.
- 6:38Speaker 2: I can't walk anymore, so I won't be officiating.
- 6:42Speaker 1: But isn't it true as we go to break here
- 6:44Speaker 1: that the player It helps a player too if there's
- 6:47Speaker 1: consistency and what the officials are calling. Because now if
- 6:50Speaker 1: you're a defensive back, you know, I can't do this,
- 6:53Speaker 1: but maybe I could do that, you know what I'm saying.
- 6:56Speaker 3: And I think the hardest call is is PI pass interference,
- 6:59Speaker 3: whether it's off, it's a defensive call it or not
- 7:02Speaker 3: call it. To me, that's by far the hardest one
- 7:05Speaker 3: for the officials to call on a consistent basis. But
- 7:08Speaker 3: you ask them to and I know that they try.
- 7:11Speaker 2: To be consistent. I know that they do, but they're human.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, we all are, that's for sure. Valens and
- 7:18Speaker 1: sand will be with us. Johnnie Stafford, we'll talk a
- 7:21Speaker 1: little bit about Georgia State back in a moment with
- 7:23Speaker 1: Jim More on the Yukon Football Coaches Show.
